ELCOME TO OUR ANNUAL CRUELTY FREE ISSUE where we spotlight people and products making a difference for our animal friends. We are also celebrating 19 years in print and are

excited to continue to share the journey of traveling with Fido near and far. This issue celebrates spring, which sometimes is synonymous with hope, starting over and being the best version of ourselves. Catra Corbett on page 30 gives a compelling interview both in conquering personal demons and finding redemption in running. And I might add, her 13-yearold Dachshund, TruMan, is a great running companion. It goes without saying but I will state the obvious; I am grateful to be able to travel with my husband and our three rescue hounds. I am lucky to be able to sniff out hotels and destinations for purpose of review. As of this writing, I am scheduling time in Montana, Oregon and California hopefully bringing back unique perspectives on travel destinations that will encourage you to get out there yourself with your furry companion. Whether you travel local or globally, be sure to read Tropical Dog whose writer, Maria Himmich, travels with her companion Shark in Greece (page 54) and Adventures in Petsitting where

author Jane Thomas might inspire you to housesit while getting paid for it to watch the homeowners pets. (page 56) If you are new to the pages of FIDO Friendly, our features always include the Backyard where people doing good to benefit both humans and canines alike are profiled. (page 74) I hope you enjoy perusing issue number 77 and find ways to live cruelty-free from meatless Monday’s to choosing cosmetics not tested on animals. It will mean a lot for the animals and a lot for our planet. Enjoy spring and get out there and do something with Fido! With compassion, SUSAN SIMS

Winning Essay Gizmo’s New Year’s Resolution I know most dogs would say, “Chase more squirrels!” or “Convince my human to take me on more walks!”…but my resolution is to love my human more. You see, 2018 was a tough year for us. My 14.5 year old corgi big sister Sayde crossed the Rainbow Bridge in October after battling Degenerative Myelopathy for almost 2 years, and it has been a tough adjustment for Mom and me. Since I’m all she has and I know she’s still sad, I’ve gotta be there for Mom. If she goes into the bathroom, I sit on the bath mat. When she does laundry, I supervise how she folds the clothes. She never has to eat alone; I lay by her chair, staring at her with my big brown eyes and hope she drops some pizza crust for me. (It doesn’t usually work.) If she’s watching TV, I lay on the couch with her. Every morning, I burrow under the covers to snuggle. I am so lucky that she adopted me after being my foster mom. It’s time for me to pay it forward and love her as much as I can. Mom tells me I’m a good boy, but this year, I’m determined to be the BEST boy.

SORT OF REALITY? That would take a major evolutionary leap, of course, but for pet owners who would like to see their dogs, cats, and other animals calmer and/or in less pain, the introduction of CBD hemp oil products offers some hope and interesting possibilities. Cannabidiol (or CBD), discovered in 1940, is one of a class of diverse chemical compounds, naturally occurring, that is found in the resinous flower of cannabis, the therapeutic properties of which are currently being tested and often confirmed by both scientists and the medical profession. CBD is closely related to, but also quite different from tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, the compound that produces the “high” for which cannabis is justly famous. CBD, however, as shown by the evidence so far, offer zero “high” and seems both safe and nonaddictive. Medicinal uses for CBD include treatment for certain types of epilepsy and various neurological disorders, and we humans are now increasingly using it for its calming effects, as a pain remedy, and more. Not surprisingly, we’ve also begun to give CBD to our beloved pets – for everything from anxiety and arthritis to pain and even seizures. As cannabis has become increasingly “legal” (according to the website Leafly, there remain only four states in which it is still completely illegal), attitudes of the medical and veterinarian professions toward it and its offshoots seem to be keeping step with our changing times. All this has now spawned a recent and increasingly major addition to the pet products industry, by companies producing CBD products, some of which – as usually

Are they better understanding the differences between CBD and THC in hemprelated products? “Yes”, insists Ziskin, “ there has been a great shift in the type of questions we’re being asked. Lake Geneva Think Wisconsin, not Switzerland. by Susan Sims, Publisher

TOWN OF LAKE GENEVA. Just 80 miles outside of Chicago, it is a world away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and your dog is as welcome as you are. The 26-mile shore path is a wonderful way to experience the slower pace with Fido as it winds it’s way around Geneva Lake in front of beautiful historical homes. One can’t help but imagine these stately mansions and summer homes first built in the 1800’s when the Chicago fire led many families to rebuild their large homes here. Oh Savannah! Walk Amid Style, Beauty and Grace Fido and you will be treated like royalty. by Robin Tierney

us realize we were in the right place. A stately blonde Labradoodle patiently surveyed guests clinked wine glasses by the fireplace. Two perky, exquisitely groomed lap dogs seemed to realize they were in the lap of luxury. A sleek spaniel quaffed straight-up water from a silver bowl as his person sipped a welcome flute of champagne. The canines agreed: the new Perry Lane Hotel is the dog’s bow-wow. Clearly, Georgia’s worldly and historic port city is more luxurious than ever. As Savannah’s landmark luxury-class hotel, Perry Lane dazzles the eye with its classic-meetscontemporary architectural style, remarkable design elements from floor to ceiling, views of historic homes, shops and church steeples, and artifacts on display. These include canine- and feline- inspired objects such as ceramic baskets to whimsical paintings. The hotel occupies two facing towers in the heart of downtown, making for easy walks to the city’s river walk, legendary squares full of live oaks draped with Spanish moss (actually, it’s not moss, but rather, air plants) and dotted with ferns and scores of Fidofriendly sidewalk cafes, boutiques and pubs. Allowing dogs up to 50 pounds, Perry Lane Hotel’s guestrooms pair Southern grace with modern beauty. The furniture is as comfy as it is stylish. A king bed tempts guests to sleep in, but remember to leave plenty of time to explore the hotel and the city. Have someone keep Fido company as you swim in the rooftop pool and lounge on the multi-level deck, which offers ter dark, flickering torches add to the romance. Forsyth Park is the site of the Humane Society for Greater Savannah’s annual Doggie Carnival, which usually happens in May. Statues overlooking the 22 unique historic squares reference chapters of the city’s rich and often dark, mysterious past. Dogs are welcome on many walking tours that range from architecture by day to ghost storytelling after dark. Pups are part of the spectacle that is the Starland District’s first Friday of the month Art March festival. In that district, Fido hotspots include Canine Palace, whose owner coordinates the annual Wag O Ween (come for the 2019 celebration on October 26). Walk down the brick aisle of the Boxwood Garden at The Inn at Willow Grove, one of several Fidofriendly wedding venues on the historic property.

T I P S FO R A S U CC E S S F U L D O G W E D D I N G • Consider your dog’s personality. Be sure your dog’s energy level matches that of your ceremony. Shy dogs might handle small wedding parties but not grand galas; energetic dogs stealing the show. If you’re not sure, schedule a private session with a professional dog trainer to talk about your dog’s needs and to start any pre-ceremony training—like teaching your dog to walk down the aisle as a ring bearer, one of the most popular jobs for canine wedding attendants! • Talk to the wedding photographer. Be sure that your photographer knows that your dog will be a member of the wedding party and that you want his participation captured in photos. • Hire a pet sitter for the day. Unless your ceremony is an intimate one with just a handful of guests, consider hiring a pet sitter for the day whose job is to attend the wedding and keep your dog safe and comfortable. The pet sitter can walk your dog as you dress and prepare for the ceremony, then attend the wedding ceremony and watch your dog for any signs of discomfort (and tend to your dog in case he starts to bark, whine or wander during the ceremony). At the reception, the sitter can keep an eye out to make sure your dog doesn’t snag a tray of chocolate-covered strawberries or, if your dog is tired from the day’s festivities, sit with him in your hotel room as you turn your attention to your wedding guests.

WE ARE BULLY for Bully Sticks!

Great for cleaning teeth and relieving stress, here are our top four recommendations. Product review by Junior, Jake and Honey as told by Susan Sims, Publisher Three dogs in the household requires a unique dance of when to treat, how much to treat and what are the best treats? The longest lasting, best low odor and size suitability will all be addressed in our review below. Let’s meet our bully stick trial crew.

Since foxes are well nigh impossible to house-train, or indeed train at all, it is perhaps for the best that looks alone can be emulated. The American Eskimo is a snow-white adorable ball of fluff that has the nose and ear shape of a fox. If anyone fancies a white-faced fox poking out of a bicycle basket, this is it. The Shiba Inu is decidedly diminutive, weighing in at a maximum of 23lbs. The ancient Japanese breed, with red, white, black and tan markings, is perhaps the foxiest of them all. Or is the Finnish Spitz the final word in foxiness? Unlike the quiet Shiba Inu, the Finnish Spitz is known for its love of barking. where she got it. Amazed by the considerable interest, she decided the bags would make delightful gifts or even be fun to sell. The rubber fish purse, however, proved an elusive catch; they were nowhere to be found. When not out with her finned accessory, Pitcher and her partner, Tommy Dott, run the Lamb and Lion Inn on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The lodging swims in Fido-friendliness; plus, assorted nearby trails, beaches and activities afford fur guests quality vacay time with their humans. Pitcher and Dott have owned the business for almost a couple of decades and have been in the hospitality industry for most of their lives—lives that have embraced a love and compassion for animals. Their two adopted Yorkshire Terriers, Pretzel and Cosmos, along with Pomeranian sibling Miss Molly, can attest to that. The innkeepers regularly contribute to animal rescues, such as the local Yorkies, Inc. and MSPCA Cape Cod, and often offer free overnights as fundraisers.
