parents devastated by the Russian invasion since February 24. “Kormotech has been fulfilling requests with their own capabilities and pet supplies but are running out of inventory and cannot meet the demand being created by the destruction,” said Liz Baker, CEO for Greater Good Charities. “This new coalition around Save Pets of Ukraine will help raise urgently needed cash donations to purchase medicine and supplies in countries nearby, as well as source food and product donations for longer term relief.” While many organizations, including Greater Good Charities, are focused on helping people and pets fleeing Ukraine, there is a desperate need to provide emergency relief to those remaining in the western section of this beleaguered nation. While pet food and supplies will be needed long term, the most urgent need is for cash donations so that products can be purchased quickly in neighboring countries and shipped in. With Kormotech’s presence in the country, and its partner’s ability to source donations, Save Pets of Ukraine is uniquely positioned to help those remaining in Ukraine. HOW TO HELP NOW * Greater Good Charities is collecting cash donations on behalf of Save Pets of Ukraine. All donations made in the U.S. are 100% tax deductible, as allowable by law, and 100% of donations received will support the initiative. U Hearts Foundation will coordinate the purchase and distribution of supplies into the country. Those interested in donating are invited to visit https://greatergood.org/ savepetsofukraine. Greater Good Charities is also sourcing product donations and coordinating the shipment of goods to neighboring countries for distribution. If you are a company in the U.S. or Europe interested in making a product donation, please email savepetsofukraine@greatergood.org. The initiative gives priority to pet volunteers and shelters, as well as humanitarian aid to points under constant fire. The group also endeavors to connect pet stores in cities not currently affected by the Russian invasion with individuals seeking help. Please join me as we pray for Ukraine.

What My Dogs Taught Me About Letting Go Navigating loss and grief to find resilience. Story and photos by Adam Markel A beach day, Adam Markel with Wilson and Duncan.
I continue to walk, with my wife and by myself. I also did a podcast on three things Duncan taught me about life. One of them was to always have a hopeful heart. When we got home, he would always greet us with unconditional love. He’d lift his head as if to say, “Are we going on a walk? Am I getting a treat? Something great is about to happen!” I constantly reflect back on that as a way to engage in life. Doing something to commemorate the person or companion we’ve lost provides us with a healthy way to deal with loss, and gradually let go. And when we’re truly okay with letting go, we find a great deal more peace. ADAM MARKEL Best-selling author, keynote speaker, and resilience researcher Adam Markel inspires leaders to master the challenges of massive disruption in his new book, “Change Proof — Leveraging the Power of Uncertainty to Build Long-Term Resilience” (McGraw-Hill, Feb. 22, 2022). Adam is author of the #1 Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, and Publisher’s Weekly best-seller, “Pivot: The Art & Science of Reinventing Your Career and Life.” Learn more at AdamMarkel.com. were an opportunity to break up the stress and get back into equilibrium, to a place where I felt good. Walking the dogs gave me a chance to take care of them and myself at the same time. Such rituals can also provide us with a bridge, from a moment when we’re devastated by loss to another moment when we’re able to deal with it. But there’s also something below the surface that we don’t talk about much, which is letting go of control. Facing uncertainty, the unknown, and the fact that we can’t control what happens in our lives drives much of the anxiety that people feel in any kind of loss. So how can we use the loss of a pet or person or something else in our lives as a way to work on getting less attached to things staying exactly as they are? Structures and routines help. So do tangible acts of remembrance. When we lost Duncan and Willy, we got a paw print garden tile that we

From Cattle Ranch to 5013c Non-profit Vegan Farm Animal Sanctuary Interview by Susan Sims, Publisher
Renee King-Sonnen, Rowdy Girl’s Founder and Executive Director with husband Tommy and Rowdy Girl.
18 Spring 2022
I LOVE COWS. Not long ago my oldest son, Scott, gifted me with a trip to Farm Sanctuary in California for Mother’s Day. The highlight of the tour was the photo op with Bruno, a giant of a bull. I was in awe at how huge and gentle he was and mindful not to let him lick my face as a cow’s tongue is very rough-nearly like sandpaper. It follows that for this year’s annual cruelty-free issue I wanted to continue my adoration of these sentient creatures by interviewing Renee King-Sonnen, founder of the Rowdy Girl Sanctuary in Texas. Susan Sims: What was the turning point in your life, or the ‘aha’ moment when you looked at our animal friends as sentient beings and not food? Renee King-Sonnen: The turning point in my life occurred when I began bottle feeding a Brangus calf, I named Rowdy Girl. Though it took me several years to break through tradition and conditioning, she was the catalyst.

SS: Have you been faced with criticism or downright hatred from neighboring cattle ranchers? And if so, how have you been able to withstand and cope? RKS: No, we are not faced with criticism or hatred. Because our story went viral on multiple news outlets including CBS Evening News cattle ranchers related to us. All cattle ranchers I know love their animal’s, but they are conditioned to see them as property. What happened instead was that my story became a gateway for rancher families to learn more about our transition. I was contacted by them because they identified with my story but could never talk about it. I became an outlet for the emotions they could never express because of the oppression of tradition. Plantiful Kiki has the Recipe for Success As told to Susan Sims, Publisher AS A LONGTIME VEGAN, I NEVER TIRE OF SEARCHING SOCIAL MEDIA FOR RECIPES AND STORIES about people doing good for the planet and their health. I started following Plantiful Kiki on YouTube and fell in love with her refreshing approach to whole food plant based (WFPB) cooking. She is the first to admit that she likes to keep it simple which is right up my alley. Having lost over 70 pounds by following The Starch Solution by Dr. John McDougal, Kiki has turned her knowledge into her very own cottage industry by showcasing tips and recipes to lose weight while enjoying life with her family. Her family has adopted the WFPB diet as well and it’s a joy to see her young children and husband embrace the abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables grown on their own property in Colorado. begin to feel the health benefits? Plantiful Kiki: The biggest stumbling block I came across was not knowing where to start in the kitchen. All of the recipes I looked up were so complicated and time consuming that it made transitioning to a plant-based lifestyle feel overwhelming. This is why I started developing my own simple recipes. I started feeling better within a few weeks of going plant based. I found that I had more energy, less foggy brain, and I was sleeping better!

These strategies include: • Engaging in advocacy and education on animal rights, veganism, and plant-based eating; • Expanding the markets for alternatives to factory farm products; • Pursuing legislative changes to ban the worst practices on factory farms; • Working with major corporations on policies to eliminate or reduce the use of factory farm products; • Conducting undercover investigations that generate mainstream media coverage to expose the public to the worst abuses occurring on factory farms; • Operating animal sanctuaries that provide safe haven for victims of animal abuse and educational opportunities for the public. In addition to its philanthropy program, Dr. Bronner’s also highlighted select animal advocacy organizations on its online store in 2021, allowing consumers to donate a portion of their purchase to Encompass, La Raza, and Vegan Outreach. The company also donated its soaps and other products to virtual conferences, educational events, fundraisers, and animal sanctuaries. The company continues to serve its on-site employees free, vegan organic lunches daily, and this year launched a new vegan, organic and fairtrade food product—Magic All-One Chocolate. “Our chocolate is not only a delicious product offering, it is also an activist endeavor to support and grow Dynamic Agroforestry Efforts led-by our supplier farmers who are practicing regenerative organic agriculture. Our chocolate is a model option for how we can make delicious plant-based food choices and at the same time support climate positive and labor-friendly business and agricultural practices,” explains Mike Bronner, President of Dr. Bronner’s.
About Dr. Bronner’s Founded in the U.S. in 1948, Dr. Bronner’s is the top-selling natural brand of soap in North America and a leading brand worldwide. The company is an independent, family-owned business based in California, committed to honoring the vision of founder Emanuel Bronner by making socially and environmentally responsible personal care and food products of the highest quality, and by dedicating profits to help make a better world. Dr. Bronner’s commitment to social justice, environmental sustainability, and progressive business practices is part of the company’s mission to put into practice the “All-One” philosophy printed on the company’s iconic soap labels. The company caps executive salaries at 5 times its lowest paid fully vested position and donates all profits not needed for business development to causes and charities it believes in. “Dr. Bronner’s generated nearly $190 million in revenue in 2020 and donated 40% of profits to activist and charitable efforts, totaling an estimated 8.6% of revenue.” A bottle of Dr. Bronner’s soap was sold, on average, every 1.51 seconds last year, and a bar of Dr. Bronner’s soap was sold every 2.83 seconds. drbronner.com

The Langham Huntington, Pasadena Check in to this oasis with Fido and you may never wish to leave. By Susan Sims, Publisher
SO, THIS IS HOW THE OTHER HALF LIVES? It’s a rhetorical question; and so happy to experience the luxury which The Langham Huntington, Pasadena is known for. With Director of Barketing, Honey, my husband and I were greeted upon check-in by Gary Chiu, Front Office Supervisor who is clearly a dog lover. There are no words for that chandelier There is so much eye-candy once you set foot and paw into the hotel that it’s hard to get your bearings. Once ensconced in our room, Honey made a beeline to the Langham signature pet bed. Afterall, pink is her favorite color. Power of the press does have its privileges and local 3 Dog Bakery catered to her sweet tooth while the hotel provided a signature robe.

Of special note is the newly restored and rehabilitated iconic Picture Bridge, a historic landmark feature on the grounds of the urban resort for nearly 90 years with paintings added in 1933 that serve as a living storybook for the state of California by illustrating its many jewels. In 2013, after more than 80 years of exposure to the outdoor elements, all the oil-paintings were carefully removed from the Bridge to halt their deterioration and then stored in a climate-controlled art-storage facility where they continue to reside. I couldn’t have been happier with my vegan meatloaf which included toasted garlic Jasmine rice and caramelized root vegetables while hubby was equally in gastronomic heaven with his grilled Moyer Farm filet mignon that was cooked to perfection. And he is the picky one. Of course, we walked that fantastic meal off as the sun was setting in the picture-perfect California sky. Turning in for the night we smiled at each other and realized that we just experienced how the other half lives. Not bad, not bad at all.

THE MONMOUTH COUNTY SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS The Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was founded in 1945 to care for the community’s homeless, neglected and abused animals. We are located in Eatontown New Jersey and open 7-days a week for adoptions. Our Mission is to protect, care and advocate for all animals. We are dedicated to enforcing animal cruelty laws; providing a safe haven for homeless, abused and abandoned animals while they await adoption; reducing over-population through spay/neutering; and cultivating their humane treatment through education and advocacy services as a valuable community resource. www.monmouthcountyspca.org
ABOUT SQUIRREL: Squirrel is an adorable 9-week-young terrier mix who was transported from a struggling shelter in the south to the safety of the Monmouth County SPCA. The Monmouth County SPCA is fortunate enough to have the support and resources to assist other shelters in need white simultaneously recirculating funds back to them to help with spay/ neuter efforts. A love affair with street dogs The relationship between Turkish people and their street dogs is extraordinary. Since at least the 15th century the strays have been a part of everyday life, seen as having equal purpose as the people. Dogs catch ferries or ride on escalators with nobody batting an eye. In 2004, laws decreed that the street dogs must be looked after. They’re treated well and kindly – I sat in more than one cafe when a wandering dog climbed into a comfortable chair and settled down for an undisturbed sleep – and as a result they are sweet-natured and friendly. It isn’t unusual to see a set of kennels beneath an underpass, complete with rugs and sofas, and dogs will come by with large pieces of meat in their

The Phoenician A luxury collection resort, Scottsdale, Arizona. Story and Photos by Susan Sims, Publisher ON OUR PET ADOPTION TOUR LAST YEAR, we were lucky enough to spend a few days at one of our favorite resorts, The Phoenician in Scottsdale, Arizona. Located at the base of the iconic Camelback Mountain, and known for its lush landscaping, sparkling swimming pools, and unrivaled guest service, the AAA Five Diamond Phoenician is a remarkable resort, notable to travelers across the globe. From the sparkling swimming pools to the breathtaking views of the Valley, it is no secret that The Phoenician is a secluded haven of relaxation for every guest that visits the 254acre property. Signature amenities combined with unrivaled guest service are major factors that contribute to the serene atmosphere found here. An exclusive art collection adorns the property, with exquisite pieces found throughout the expansive grounds, guest rooms and public spaces. Unique and enriching, these works highlight different cultures and styles, bringing an illuminating component to the iconic resort. With covid ever present during our travels, we were mindful of protocol as we meandered through the manicured grounds, gazing at statues, and resting by water features and lush landscapes. We enjoyed in-room dining this trip and were so pleased with room service and the extraordinary table they set for us. From start to finish, the food was cooked to perfection and yes, we did save room for dessert. It doesn’t matter how many times we have stayed at The Phoenician; each visit brings something new to explore and cherish until we meet again.
