Meet Diesel Codr! He is an Australian Labradoodle born in Iowa. He is 11 weeks old. His favorite companion is Joseph Codr. He loves blankets, attention, and playing with his four-legged furry family members and friends! He is very loyal and loving, rarely moving more than an arm’s reach from any of us. After recent circumstances, we have needed him there. And he has given wisely and purposely far beyond his years, or weeks, as it would be. We are so thankful for him, and to him. A true testament to the power and magnitude of a kind dog’s mere presence. publisher’s note Junior

THE FAVORITE PART OF MY DAY IS TO TAKE OUR TWO DOGS FOR A WALK. At least once a day and sometimes twice with weather permitting, my husband and I leash up our Directors of Barketing, Junior and Honey, and go for a stroll. Living in Idaho and in the country, we oftentimes have the streets to ourselves. Every so often, we will stop and chat with a neighbor or two, catch up on what’s important in their lives or just wave as we walk by.

Honey

After our walk that can last up to an hour, the dogs are tired and ready for a nap which allows me to get

back to work in front of my computer. However the Directors of Barketing are ever present; Honey oftentimes takes up the space I carved out for her on my desk. Being twelve pounds has its privileges. Junior takes the big dog bed at the foot of my desk and with his constant snores, I get serious and focus on the tasks at hand. Unless of course, Charley our cat of 14 years comes up to the office window and claws the screen. That’s my cue to get up and let her in the house for maybe the fifth or sixth time, wait for her to grab a bite to eat and then let her out again. By then, Honey wants off the bed on the desk, Junior wants to get up and eat (did I tell you he is a Lab?) and I have totally lost my train of thought. Taking care of our beloved animals is a full time job and one I wouldn’t trade for the world. Sure, some might see them as an inconvenience to what’s important at the time, but my husband and I can’t imagine a life without them. So as we wind up this crazy year of 2020 and hope for a better 2021 on so many fronts, we take solace in knowing that when all is said and done, it’s the love of our animals that help us through tumultuous times and a reminder that each day is a blessing, especially during this time of the year. Wishing you and your furry loved ones a wonderful holiday season and give them extra hugs from me! Be well and stay safe,

Fido-friendly Ski Destination and so much more. By Susan Sims, Publisher 16 Fall/Winter 2020

often with kids in tow. These days, I enjoy watching the activity, but my love for a good ski town still warms my heart. And so the trip to Durango in the Fall was just what the doctor ordered and traveling during COVID didn’t deter this journalist from having the time of her life. This time with dogs in tow. Home base was the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Durango. The best room in the house opened up to the greenbelt alongside the Animas River. The Animas River carves a lush, scenic valley into the towering San Juan Mountains, delivering water and nutrients for some of the richest soils in the region. Home to a plethora of fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, and other local food products, the north Animas River valley abundantly provides for Durango’s renowned culinary scene. view of the river, folks out running, biking and walking their dogs. A short jaunt is the Durango off-leash Dog Park where pups can play in the river and hike with you on 10-acres. Working up an appetite, we headed to James Ranch where well-behaved pets are welcome to dine with you al fresco. Thinking

back on our meal has me hankering for more and if I lived any closer, I would jump in the car and make a bee line for the place. Beyond farm to table, the James Ranch Grill is “table on the farm” by sourcing its main regenerative ingredients from the James Ranch itself. Overlooking the fields of the 400-acre ranch, James Ranch Grill serves up fresh, organic ingredients, including handcrafted burgers, gourmet cheese melts, steak sandwiches, salads, local craft beverages, and more. Located just ten miles from downtown Durango, James Ranch raises livestock, pigs, and grows organic vegetables using strict sustainable growing practices for over 50-years. The next day while the dogs were playing at daycare, my husband and I took a dip over at the Durango Hot Springs. Newly renovated from the historic Trimble Hot Springs, phase one was completed in mid-July with the new swimming pool, four hot springs soaking pools and a completely renovated spa. Six Japanese-style Ofuro tubs will be available on the property, filled to the individual user’s desired temperature and refilled after each use. A unique Aquagen system adds microscopic “nono- bubbles” of oxygen infused into some of the hot springs pools, creating a number of health and water quality benefits. Phase two was underway during our visit. On the cool day of our visit, the soaking pools were the perfect treat to relax and unwind. There was a two-hour maximum to enjoy the pools but with few people there at the same time, we fudged our time a little bit. We just had to purchase two luxurious robes to remember our day, it was that special. On our last day, we visited Downtown Durango and Purgatory Ski Resort. Fetch Fido A FlightÂ

Now there is a flight to freedom for these fortunate pets.

20 Fall/Winter 2020

By Claudia Bensimoun WHEN VIKKI SMITH, FOUNDER OF FETCH FIDO A FLIGHT MOVED TO OKLAHOMA in 2016, she soon realized the dire situation that shelter pets were in. After learning about the euthanasia practices in Oklahoma, and the number of adoptable animals being destroyed every day to make space in over crowed shelters, she founded Fetch Fido A Flight to help alleviate the burden and move highly adoptable shelter pets to areas of the US where they were actually in need of adoptable pets. “All this is done through donations of people who support our cause. The planes we use are leased through a private cargo company with funds donated to us. That company supplies the planes and the pilots for our life saving flights,” says Vikki. But she worries about COVID-19 effects on shelters. “In the beginning of the pandemic we saw an increase in people adopting and fostering due to being home and the huge outcry from shelters and rescues for help. Since things have gone on for so long, we are now seeing our shelters again being stressed with over full shelters and increased euthanasia. Many of the transports have not been running at their normal capacity (Fetch Fido A Flight included) due to our receiving shelters

having to change their operation protocol to allow for social distancing.”

ALL THIS IS DONE THROUGH DONATIONS OF PEOPLE WHO SUPPORT OUR CAUSE.

More troubling is the increase in natural disasters today. Flooding and wildfires have taken their toll, and she explains that “We are also dealing with many of our receiving shelters who are in areas where people are dealing with flooding and wild fires so they have opened their available kennel space for evacuating families to bring their animals for safe refuge until they could return to their homes. That puts us in a holding pattern until things open back up. That said, we are planning to start our flights again very soon.” Saving pets from kill shelters has become a priority with Fetch Fido A Flight hoping to one day eliminate euthanasia practices being performed in Oklahoma’s shelters, and to altogether eliminate the need for euthanasia due to shelter overcrowding. “Municipal shelters, foster homes, and rescues are all over capacity, and the only hope to save these innocent pets is to transport them to safety to No Kill shelters throughout the country.”

wills and estate donations/matching funds/corporate sponsorships, etc. All can be found on our website.” Today, you can help save a life through Fetch Fido A Flight! Fetch Fido A Flight fly’s pets to NO kill shelters from where they will be quickly adopted into loving permanent homes rather than die a horrific death here in Oklahoma. “Heart Stick, Gun Shot, and Gas Chambers are all still legal and practiced EVERY day in the State of Oklahoma to euthanize shelter pets due to overpopulation and shelter overcrowding. Saving these pets cost us approximately $140 per animal to cover the cost of the flight. These pets have been failed by humans, so we are now their only hope,” she added. For more information on how you can get involved log on to fetchfidoaflight.com.

In addition, funding is necessary, and Vikki explains that “Donation options are unlimited. People can make a tax deductible donation in any amount through our website or our Facebook page. We also have

Big Bear Cool Cabins What better way to social distance than by staying in a cozy cabin this winter. By Debbie McGinn

AS A SOUTHERN CALIFORNIAN, BIG BEAR IS IN OUR BACKYARD. A two-hour drive and we were in town for a nice long three-day weekend. The check in process at Big Bear Cool Cabins was mindful of social diskitchen that lead to the spacious backyard which is fenced and included a small bench in the yard and a Weber barbeque grill. The interior was very rustic and clean with a full kitchen including dishes and cooking pans plus a refrigerator and microwave. Our cozy cabin is perfect for those who spend most of their time outdoors enjoying all the activities like the hiking trails, kayaking, boating, winter skiing and other snow sports. Situated in a quiet neighborhood and a short five-minute drive to Boulder Bay Park located on Big Bear Lake, we were offered free use of one single person kayak and one bike. Who wants to cook while on vacation? Not me! There were a lot of

Until further notice, most foreign nationals cannot travel to Canada, even if they have a valid visitor visa or electronic travel authorization (eTA). These restrictions stop most non-essential (discretionary) travel to Canada.

Before you arrive with Fido. • When bringing pets into the country, all dogs and cats are legally required to have current rabies vaccinations and papers. If your dog or cat is less than three months old you do not need a certificate of rabies vaccination, however, the animals must be in good health when they arrive. Dogs can enter Canada without quarantine from any country. • Please ensure your pet is wearing a valid license for your home community. • Ensure your pet has adequate identification (e.g. microchip, collar with correct phone number) in case they become lost. • Visitors travelling with a service dog must register them in BC to enjoy access under the Guide and Service Dog Act.

When in Whistler with your dog. • Dogs must be on-leash at all times within Whistler, except in designated off-leash areas. • Please pick up after your dog; the Whistler Municipality provides compostable dog waste bags along the Valley Trail and in designated areas. • Dogs are not allowed on many of Whistler’s signature hiking trails, including Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains, Rainbow alpine trails, Skywalk Trail and in Provincial Parks. • Do not leave your animal unattended in a parked car in warm weather – animals can overheat quickly, even with windows down for air circulation. • Never let your dog or cat out at night; there are predators that are well adapted to Whistler’s environment that will think of your pet as food. • Whistler receives a lot of snow in winter – small dogs may have difficulty getting around in unplowed areas or require a coat to stay warm. • Dogs are not allowed to be tethered and left unattended anywhere in Whistler, this includes outside shops and restaurants. They are also not permitted to sit with you inside a restaurant or outside on the patio due to health code regulations. Author Scott Sveslosky enjoys a day at Whistler.

• Although many hotels welcome dogs, owners are not permitted to leave them unattended in rooms.

Important Update for the 2020/21 Winter Season. Guests are required to wear face coverings on chairlifts and gondolas, in buildings and in Snow School lessons. TRAVELING WITH FIDO DURING COVID JUST GOT A WHOLE LOT MORE FUN while staying at the historic Painted Lady Bed & Brew in Albuquerque. Once a house of ill-repute, among other things dating back to 1881, there

is more history in myths surrounding this adobe. Why not bed and breakfast? Owner Jesse Herron confesses ‘I am not up early enough to make breakfast, plus I am not a good cook, so Bed & Brew works out better.’ Fully equipped kitchen two-bedroom apartment style accommodations with a private back patio to take Fido out at night makes the Painted Lady Bed & Brew a great home base. PHOTO CREDIT: SUSA N SIMS

Contactless check in was made easy with a code to the private entry gate and code to our room, the Lottie Suite. Because of state rules, there was not a social hour, but Jesse made sure we had the brew of our choice with snacks to enjoy at the outdoor picnic table. At night, the lighting and well maintained gardens had a warm and festive feel. Hope to visit again soon someday when restrictions to socialize are lifted and enjoy more of the wonderful hospitality at the Painted Lady Bed & Brew.

PAINTED LADY BED & BREW No more than two well-behaved family pets are permitted unless they are prohibited by state law or ordinance. Painted Lady Bed & Brew is the first of its kind in New Mexico and one of only a handful of such unique establishments in the country. The property was purchased by Jesse Herron and completely overhauled in 2015 with the hopes of bringing people together over a beer. Painted Lady Bed & Brew officially opened on August 3, 2018, International Beer Day; a day to celebrate all things beer. Painted Lady Bed & Brew is the first establishment in Albuquerque to secure a New Mexico state bed & breakfast liquor license. The establishment was a true labor of love that was inspired by the idea that beer brings people together. That is the underlying basis and hope for the property: to bring people from all walks of life together over a beer. Given beer’s “every man” image, one that relies on themes of community and commonality, it’s a product that has the potential to feel particularly welcoming and available. It fosters feelings of togetherness in its ability to bond people socially. breakfastisoverrated.com

APL M E E T M AG G I E ! At just two-and-a-half months, Maggie was already too much for her owners to handle, so they surrendered her to the Animal Protective League in Springfield, Illinois. The feisty Red Heeler pup has never met a person she didn’t like, and she will happily play with people and toys till the cows come home. She can be bossy—her breed is known for livestock herding—and even as a puppy is determined to be top dog. For her own safety, she needs to be an only dog. Every year, APL rescues more than 2,000 kittens, puppies, and adult cats and dogs who have been surrendered to animal-control facilities or left to fend for themselves only to fall victim to illness, injury, or abuse. To stem over-population, all are spayed or neutered before adoption and are among the 12,000 or more surgeries performed each year in APL’s high-quality, low-cost spay/neuter clinic. To ensure the health of pets, APL offers low-cost vaccine clinics and a pet-food-bank. Volunteers are a vital part of APL’s success, with community members assisting staff with daily tasks, adoption events, fundraising, and maintenance. apl-shelter.org

In 2018, Ferkin and Iskra were separated, and it was a hard transition for Ferkin. His only comfort was knowing that the pair would be reunited once again once Iskra retired, and that day has finally come. Mission K9 Rescue picked up Iskra in Ft. Myer, VA, and drove her 1600 miles to Boerne, TX, in order to see that Ferkin’s hope became a reality.

He passed away in July of 2018 and was loved by thousands that had the opportunity to meet him. He was a big goofy boy that loved life and tennis balls like no other.

Homes for Military and Contract Working Dogs By Bob Bryant - CTO, Mission K9 Rescue Photos courtesy of Mission K9 Rescue

THOUSANDS OF WORKING DOGS SERVE GLOBALLY, working tirelessly alongside military and civilian handlers. The jobs they are trained to do vary, with the most common being drug or explosive detection tasks. Many are cross trained in protection and are considered “dual purpose” K9’s. Other specialized skills include currency detection, electronics detection, and tracking. For dual purpose work, the Belgian Malinois has become king of the working dog world. They are lighter and faster than their German Shepherd relatives and have fewer problems with their hips as they age. Some refer to them as “Maligators” due to their high, constant drive and tenacity. German Shepherds are second only to the Belgian Malinois for use as dual purpose K9’s, with Labrador Retrievers coming in third and most commonly used as single purpose detection dogs. TSA frequently employs Vizslas, German Shorthair Pointers, and Springer Spaniels in their operations. The working career of a K9 can span nine or more years. The nor-

mal factor that comes into play for retirement is “workability”. Older dogs can lose drive, be less effective in heat or cold, and develop medical problems as they age. One or more factors can push a dog into retirement from an active role. Working dogs have seldom lived a life of luxury, with most kenneled daily from birth, no house training, and little interaction with other dogs or animals in general. When retired, these factors can bear heavily on a dog’s future. Temperament can be a huge issue in going from work to retirement. Many dogs have PTSD from being around explosions, gunfire, harsh chemicals, as well as combative suspects they were forced to interact with. Military Working Dogs can have up to four handlers during their careers. They receive excellent medical care and it’s normal for one of the handlers to adopt their former military working dog when they are retired. The dog’s first handler has first choice, then the second, and so on. Reasons why a handler might not be able to adopt his part-

ner include small children in the home, time available, and other reasons that cause the first handler to pass his dog to another that worked with him/her. Most retired Military and Police K9’s are adopted by former handlers with some exceptions as noted above, however contract working dogs, not owned by the military often don’t have designated handlers. Their future can be more uncertain. Some have been left kenneled overseas for far too long and their health can be endangered as a result. Contract working dogs are rescued from overseas by organizations like Mission K9 Rescue. They have brought over 1000 dogs home to the United States since 2013 and over 420 of those retired working dogs were reunited with former handlers that they served with. Dogs pulled from lives of work need a rehabilitation period, not only to decompress but to learn how to just be a “dog” again, live in a home and enjoy life with a family. Many believe that these retired working dogs should be paired with individuals needing service animals, however as most of these dogs have PTSD or other work related medical problems, they are unsuitable for and cannot be certified as “Therapy Animals or ESA Animals”. GETAWAY OFFERS MINDFUL ESCAPES TO TINY CABINS NESTLED IN NATURE where guests can take a break from work, WiFi and routines, and just be “off.” In a world where everyone is constantly plugged in, Getaway believes strongly that more simplicity, balance, and leisure time are needed to improve our well-being, creativity, productivity, and our relationships. Getaway builds Outposts, collections of tiny cabins in nature within a two-hour drive of major cities, outfits them with the comforts of home, and rents them by the night. Everything about the experience, from the location of the land to the design of the cabins, and the lack of WiFi, helps guests unplug from the stress of daily life, reset, and embrace simple pleasures like nature and a campfire. Inspired from his time living in an Airstream trailer during his years at Harvard Business School, Jon Staff and his classmate decided to create mindful escapes in tiny cabins for people looking for a meaningful way to disconnect and re-engage with nature, themselves and their loved

ones. Rather than chase the shiny and new, Jon wanted to bring people back to the basics. Through thoughtful design and intentional guest experience, Getaway circumvents the trend of people always needing to be connected and offers them a chance to disconnect with a convenient, no-hassle escape with every Outpost. Rather than a TV, the cabins are outfitted with large windows framing the scenic outdoors and a cell phone lockbox offering a gentle nudge to put away devices. The modern, functionally sleek tiny cabins furnish necessities including queen-sized memory foam beds, kitchenette with cooking essentials, bathroom, outdoor firepit, picnic table, and basic supplies to enhance the experience, from s’mores to firewood. With the idea of escaping to and rejuvenating in nature, oversized windows flood the cabin with sunlight and nature views, while calming tones and natural materials create unity between indoors and out. Getaway has Outposts outside of Atlanta, Austin and San Antonio, Boston, Cleveland and Pittsburgh, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Portland, and Washington, D.C.

ACCOMMODATIONS AND AMENITIES Each of the 140-200 square-foot Getaway cabins allow over-committed and over-connected guests to recharge and establish intimate moments relaxing in quiet nature. With the choice of two- or four-person accommodations, guests enjoy a queen-sized green tea memory foam mattress from Zinus, along with Down Etc. hypoallergenic goose-down pillows and crisp linens. The resulting BBB Canine Rescue & Transport is named after three of his fur guys that have passed on—the original B, Bandit, along with Buddy and Baxter. All dogs entering the rescue reside in foster homes. Volunteers spanning southwestern Ontario not only foster, but also assist Clark with tasks, carry out home visits and follow-ups in their areas. About 50 percent of the canines come from high-kill shelters in the United States. Before Clark started his own group, a friend, who drove for Open Arms Pound Rescue, inspired him to become involved with helping bring these dogs into Canada. Owner surrenders in Ontario take up the other approximate 50 percent coming into the rescue. Some suffer medical problems, but most are troubled with behavioral issues, such as aggression. He finds much satisfaction in rehabilitating dogs, such as in his work with Callie, a previously abused fur girl with aggression issues. Even the basic process of motivating her to climb up onto a raised bed took over a month to accomplish. They were both thrilled when after gradually inching her forward, she finally managed it and has peacefully slept there since. Clark’s philosophy is “At the end of day, regardless of how tired I am, if I’ve helped make the life of a dog better then it’s been a good day.” ‹ CHERYL SMYTH enjoys exploring nature and finding travel destinations she can
