On the Road Again! WHAT MAKES TWO SENIOR PEOPLE TRAVEL THOUSANDS OF MILES EACH YEAR TO HEAD UP A CROSSCOUNTRY PET ADOPTION TOUR? We have been asked while on the road by many a well-meaning party, ‘what’s in it for you?’ That question always takes us by surprise. We spend two months on the road promoting adoption events and raising money for shelters because adoption is our passion. We learn about the heart and soul of shelter volunteers, one story I will share here from a few years ago. It was the end of the day and we were packing up. My husband Greg was wrestling with the 50-pound spinning wheel, trying to get it back inside its beat-up cardboard box just like he has countless times before. I will admit, this is not the fun part of the tour for him. We had a few items left over that had not been awarded to attendees donating cash to spin and win so as is our procedure, we donate to the shelter remaining items from toys to food and, also ask the volunteers to spin for free. Without exception, the volunteers LOVE this part of the day. On this day, a volunteer came up to me in tears, I will call her Jane, thanking me profusely. You see, Jane has six dogs. That’s not a surprise as we have come to expect, volunteers not only take care of the animals who need homes but open their homes as well. Jane revealed that she had to move and was in the process of the heartbreaking task of giving up her dogs as she could not afford to take care of them. Because of our generous sponsors, Jane now had enough food and treats to buy her enough time to enable her to keep her beloved companions, all six of them. So, in part, that’s what’s in it for us and why we do this year after year and with the continued support of our sponsors, we will take our two rescue hounds Junior and Honey with us again this year, helping to save lives, one shelter at a time. Dine Al Fresco with Fido The Rooftop Lounge in Laguna Beach offers great views, great food and Fido can hang out too.

GROWING UP IN ORANGE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, I LOVE RETURNING TO MY ROOTS. I know all the beaches from Huntington to San Diego. I keep a mental scrapbook of the many years of watching surfers and eating ‘strips’ at the pier. During this particular trip, my girlfriend who lives nearby joined me for dinner at The Rooftop Lounge in Laguna Beach. Situated atop the La Casa Del Camino in Laguna Beach, California, is the stairway to heaven called The Rooftop Lounge. Breathtaking views surround you and your well-mannered leashed dog (be sure to ask for a water bowl for your furry companion). Scanning the menu I see the popular Avocado Toast under appetizers, but we were there for a heartier fare and as luck would

tion beginning with Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc, a crisp light wine clearing the palette for Charred Broccolini to start. There is a little heat here, quite delightful, so wait for it. We shared the Roasted Carrot & Cavatappi Pasta and Miso Sunflower Glazed Salmon as Brett encouraged us saying these were two of his favorites. They did not disappoint. The pasta was seasoned with pine nuts, aged Manchego, crispy shallots and was just the right texture. Add chicken or shrimp if you need your protein, but without these two options, the meal was quite filling. The Miso Sunflower Glazed Salmon included coconut forbidden rice and curried tomato vinaigrette herbs persillade. I think this was my personal favorite. It’s so easy to get salmon wrong, clearly the chef has talent. Melt in your mouth and seasoned to perfection, it’s a must have. Rather full and working on the second glass of Cloudy Bay, I closed my eyes when dessert was mentioned. I told Brett that only

The Rootop Lounge is a fun place. It is quintessential Southern California and as a native myself, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Cheers to a lovely summer evening in Laguna Beach at the Rooftop Lounge and cheers to Brett for helping to make it a perfect memory to add to my scrapbook.

The adoption specialist went over all behavioral information, and the adopter stated she had an eight-year-old and older children at home but would like to continue with the adoption. McKracken went home with the family but was returned the very next day because he was “too much.” The adopter’s older daughter explained that the dog jumped on her young sister and she became scared of him. Erika Fleury, Program Director, North American Primate Sanctuary Alliance

In 2019, Dr. Jane Goodall said that what inspires and gratifies her are “Precious moments when I can have a quick walk in nature. I always hope to meet and greet a dog.” At the time, Dr. Goodall had no idea how much we ALL would need the comfort of our canine friends in the years to come. Interspecies support is so important, and now our closest genetic cousins are desperately in need of help. Dr. Goodall and other animal advocates like Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara are lending their support to a group of chimpanzees who urgently have to leave a shuttered facility and are in search of stable, safe, caring sanctuary homes. The Wildlife Waystation, located outside Los Angeles, unexpectedly closed its doors in 2019, leaving hundreds of animals in need of new homes. The California Department of Fish & Wildlife provided much needed supplies and security and oversaw the rehoming of almost all of the 480 animals... but 42 chimpanzees remained. There was nowhere for those chimps to go. The North American Primate Sanctuary Alliance has determined that, although there are reputable and experienced sanctuaries willing to help, such facilities are currently at capacity and cannot accept more chimpanzees without building to accommodate them. Construction and preparations for the chimpanzees’ longterm care at new facilities will cost over $5,000,000. Funds are needed immediately! The longer it takes for the sanctuaries to complete construction, the longer the chimpanzees remain at Wildlife Waystation, where

Extending the Interspecies Love to Chimpanzees In Need

their well-being is impacted by less-than-ideal conditions, including the persistent threat of wildfires, and an insufficient water source. In addition to Jane Goodall’s endorsement, the campaign has gotten a boost from a short documentary by filmmaker and environmental activist Shaun Monson that features animal-loving actors Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara. NBC is taping a special to air nationally, following the journey of The Lucky Six – 6 chimpanzees from the Waystation, including a chimp named Lucky – on their way to a new life at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest in Washington state. The goal is to move all of the chimpanzees by the end of 2021 – but it will only happen if the minimum funds for construction and care are raised now! Fido Friendly readers will have their gifts, up to $25,000, matched by the American Anti-Vivisection Society! All donations raised through Chimpanzees In Need are accepted and administered by the fundraiser’s fiscal sponsor, conservation-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit 7th Generation Advisors, and all gifts will go only towards the needs of these deserving chimpanzees. Veterinary Tricks and Tips for giving your pet CBD. Vets who Give Their Own Pets CBD for Anxiety Weigh in on Its Effectiveness. By Janelle Lassalle, Cannabis Journalist.

LEAF REPORT TALKED TO SOME TOP-RATED VETERINARIANS about their experience using CBD to help reduce anxious behaviors in animals. HOW TO CONTROL YOUR PET’S ANXIET Y WITH C ANNABIDIOL (CBD). While it’s still relatively new to market, we have already discovered quite a few therapeutic benefits associated with Cannabidiol (CBD). Some of its most notable properties include the ability to help reduce epileptic seizures, act as an analgesic, confer anxiolytic effects and reduce inflammation. It’s no wonder, then, that humans benefiting from CBD might want to share it with those they love, including their favorite dog or cat.

Another common issue pet-owners face is dealing with dogs that get anxious during car rides or long trips. “If you have a dog that gets anxious from car rides, thunderstorms, or fireworks,” begins Ochoa, “CBD is great at decreasing dogs’ and cats’

and increase physical activity in arthritic dogs with no reported negative side effects. The second was a study from Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine which found CBD oil was able to reduce seizure frequency in dogs—again with no reported negative side effects. Dr. Joseph Wakshlag had recently completed the aforementioned first clinical trial with CBD at Cornell with great success. He’s also a huge proponent of using CBD for pets. “CBD, not THC, is wonderful for pets for a number of ailments including chronic pain, behavioral problems, and more recently with immune system regulation and improvement of GI and skin issues,” says Dr. Wakshlag.

“THC is potentially toxic [in dogs] and can cause sedation and ataxia,” warns Dr. Wakshlag. To ensure you’re getting the best CBD products for your pet, Dr. Krause recommends adhering to the following purchasing criteria: • Organically grown • Contains at least 15 milligrams of CBD per milliliter of oil. For medium to large dogs, use a product that has 30 milligrams of CBD per milliliter of oil. • A certificate of analysis can be provided by the manufacturer to check for pesticides and alcohol residues from extraction. • Less than 0.3% THC.

Dr. Krause relies primarily on CBD tinctures and treat infused forms. Ochoa, however, recommends CBD treats for dogs. “I usually do not recommend the oils as they taste very bad and many pets do not like the taste. The treats are much easier to give.”

The Rescue Bus Helps Homeless Animals Lee Asher and His Nine Adopted Dogs to the Rescue.

MANY ANIMAL LOVERS DREAM OF PURCHASING A LARGE CHUNK OF LAND AND OPERATING A RESCUE SANCTUARY. Lee Asher, corporate trainer turned dog trainer, has taken that fantasy a step farther. In 2018 he and his friend Luke Barton, a photographer and avid traveler, sold all of their possessions and purchased an old school bus. After amassing $57,000 through a Crowdfunder and receiving a $20,000 donation from Best Bully Sticks, they began their mission of helping to find loving homes for dogs in shelters. The duo and Asher’s nine rescue dogs traveled around the United States visiting shelters and rescue groups for a year to help promote the dogs up for adoption. They have also visited Canadian shelters. Asher has helped facilitate over 500 adoptions through adoption events and another 1,000 plus adoptions via social media. He credits his success to allowing people to observe a canine’s real personality. “We showcase a dogs’ true personality by taking them on adventures.” Caged canines in animal shelters aren’t able to convey their natural personalities because they are stressed out and sad or confused. Asher’s self-titled series on The Dodo,“Ruff Life with Lee Asher,” features him frolicking with his dogs in the snow, bringing foster dogs into his pack and more. One episode follows him as he adopts three dogs in one day. He’s been featured on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and news programs as well as in Business Insider, Real Leaders Magazine, and dog publications. During his visit to Ellen’s show, she presented him with a $10,000 check from Shutterfly.

Asher’s message to the public is “everyone should always consider adoption.” Rescue pooches are as wonderful as those that come from breeders. He explains, “All breeds are available through breed rescues and can be found in animal shelters. Sometimes you have to wait.” Petfinder has a search tool for specific breeds. His pack of nine rescued canines are welltrained and living proof of this message. They are ambassadors of rescue pets. Asher shared that he’s always loved dogs. Sadly, he was allergic to them as a child. Fortunately for him, as well as for dogs around the country, his allergy disappeared. He recalled being unhappy and unfulfilled

2020 Get Your Licks on Route 66® Pet Adoption Tour Recap Brought to you by FIDO Friendly Magazine and media sponsor Animal Radio, the tour travels down America’s Favorite Highway from Los Angeles to Chicago, stopping at shelters along the way to support adoption events and to raise money for the shelters with the help last year of Companion Sponsor Zymox, Advocate Sponsor Brutus Bone Broth, Car Sponsor SprinterVans4Rent and Community Sponsor HandsOn Gloves, the tour has helped place over 14,000 pets into new forever homes! 2020 was a challenging year for the animal shelters. We were planning the event stops in hopes that by the time we were ready to leave in September, protocols would be in place for safe events to include masks and social distancing. We brought hand sanitizer as well. In years past, the tour normally kicks off in Los Angeles and travels the tried-and-true road known as America’s Favorite Highway. Because of Covid restrictions, our first several stops were ultimately cancelled making our first stop, Oklahoma City. We brought our sponsor supported spinning wheel filled with prizes for attendees to win. With a donation, new and existing pet parents spin the wheel and walk away with great prizes. All proceeds benefit the shelter at the end of the day. From the 12 events planned, only five were able to operate during Covid. However, the adoptions were over 300 pets finding their new forever homes, so we call that a win. The 13th Annual Tour kicks-off September 4th in Los Angeles. Please follow along our route, support our sponsors, and come out to see us if you can. Who knows, you just might find your new forever friend! https://www.fidofriendly.com/blog/fido-friendly-magazine-12th-annual-cross-country-pet-adoption-tour

Tiny Social Media Star has a Big Heart Beloved Therapy Dog Norbert Spreads Joy & Helps Others. By Elise Phillips Margulis photo credit Mark Steines

A

dorable, three-pound Norbert is a social media star. Despite his tiny stature, he has a big presence and he’s parlayed his cuteness into a philanthropic phenomenon that includes a full line of merchandise that benefits animals and people in need.

It all began 12 years ago when Julie Steines spotted one-pound puppy Norbert on Petfinder. His tiny tongue

drops out of his mouth because he’s missing a few teeth—which only makes him more darling. Although she had never had a dog before, it was love at first sight, and Julie adopted him. Julie shared, “Norbert’s mom only gave birth to one puppy, which makes him one-of-a-kind.” Norbert, who’s had two DNA tests with different results, is most likely a combination of Chihuahua, Cairn Terrier and Lhasa Apso. Julie’s brother’s suggestion to create a Facebook page for the charismatic cutie ultimately launched a nonprofit organization after Norbert went viral. Julie and her mother, Dr. Virginia Freyermuth, began publishing award-winning Norbert picture books including “Norbert’s Little Lessons for a Big Life,” “Little Me Christmas,” “Norbert: What Can Little Me Do?”, “What Can Little You Do?” and “Norbert and Bub Book: What Can Little We Do?” Freyermuth, who has a doctorate in Art Education, is a gifted illustrator who has captured her precious grand-dog perfectly. Julie said she is still amazed that Norbert’s books and merchandise “grew beyond anything she could have imagined.” Norbert’s merchandise includes the irresistible Norbert plush toy (so everyone can have a Norbert), baby onesies, tote bags, tee-shirts, baseball caps, sweatshirts, mugs, a mason jar, backpacks and a carrying pouch. All profits go to people and animals in need. He partnered with kitty Lil Bub, another iconic pet, for a couple of projects and supports Lil Bub’s Big Fund which helps special needs companion animals and supports fostering the animal-human bond.

Regular brushing of pet’s teeth and providing them with a healthy diet and treats can significantly aid in keeping their mouth healthy and avoiding gum disease. Many animals show signs of gum disease because they aren’t provided with proper mouth care. Many pet owners overlook the importance of their pet’s dental hygiene. According to the American Veterinary Dental College, it’s estimated that most pets show signs of canine periodontal disease by just three years old. Since the primary sign of early dental disease is bad breath, it often goes unnoticed by owners because they simply think that bad breath is something animals just inherently have. Periodontal disease can cause some serious health issues for our pets and its important to practice good oral hygiene. If not, pets can lose teeth, and be in pain due to abscesses and infection. Infection in the mouth can spread to other parts of the body. Poor dental health has been linked to long-term periodontal and even heart disease. GreenPolly: A Better Choice for a Better Earth cause purple is cool, and so are you! Or, at least your pup probably thinks so. Cleaning up after your dog is an important part of keeping our environment healthy. Animal waste is an environmental pollutant and a human health hazard. It contains nutrients and pathogens that can harm local waters by encouraging

Polyethylene is conventionally produced from fossil raw materials such as oil or natural gas and is found in many everyday products that we all have come to love and hate. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the United States generates over 34 million tons of plastic each year, and less than 10% of that plastic gets recycled. In addition, 3 million tons of plastic film are landfilled each year, with less than 1% being recycled. GreenPolly aims to make a difference. Our wish is to consume and recycle these otherwise discarded plastics, turning them into a new range of bags called GreenPolly. GreenPolly is one of the first bags

to be made of 90% post-consumer (not industrial) plastic and a renewable source (10% Green Plastic from Sugarcane). Recycling plastic reduces waste going to landfills and incinerators. Similarly, sourcing natural PE from a sustainable source dramatically lowers the carbon footprint associated with the creation of the products as compared to traditional plastics.

the growth of algae and weeds if not disposed of properly. If local waters become overrun with algae, the water becomes unusable and unsafe for many favorite recreational activities like boating, fishing, and swimming. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that just 2-3 days’ worth of waste from just 100 dogs could contribute enough bacteria to temporarily close a bay and all watershed areas within 20 miles. With an estimated 77 million dogs living in the United States, picking up after your dog is an important part of maintaining your community. Additionally, pet waste carries a number of parasites and bacteria than can transmit illnesses through human contact with soil, so be sure to clean up your yard, too!

GreenPolly’s Unscented Pet Waste Bags are made with reliable, heavy duty, 3-ply construction, meaning these poop pick-up bags are durable enough for collecting your pup’s presents in the yard, in the park, or on-the-go. Keep our environment clean with our puppy approved, purple poop bags – be-

Dogs & Wine Make Everything Fine Downtown Napa has something for everyone, including your pups!

NAPA VALLEY, THE LAND OF OPEN SPACE, ROLLING HILLS AND VINEYARDS! But venture into Downtown Napa and enter a picture-perfect metropolis plucked from the pages of a fairytale. Driving into Downtown Napa with my three pups, I was overcome by the quaint, tree-lined streets and Fido-friendly attractions. From hotels, to top-rated restaurants and wine tasting rooms, Downtown Napa is incredibly welcoming to those with two and four legs. The first stop was our hotel, Napa River Inn, located along Napa’s Riverfront District within the Historic Napa Mill. The hotel dates back to1884 and is rich with history. The comfortable and stylish rooms have everything one needs for a romantic or personal getaway. Fluffy robes, comfortable beds, a charming patio and a scrumptious breakfast delivered right to your door. They even treated the pups to a basket of goodies and toys. Taking a stroll outside the hotel is a feast for the senses as well. Within walking distance, you will come across beautiful flowers, unique art sculptures and mouth-watering restaurants. For lunch, there are many Fido-friendly options. We chose Napa General Store, located within the same building as the hotel. It offers both food and shopping! Their specialty store has unique gifts made by local artists, and their restaurant offers both inside and outside dining. We opted for the waterfront patio and we were not disappointed by the view or the food. The lunch dishes were a perfect balance of light and fla-

vorful while their special dog menu received four paws up from my pups! Then it was wine time, so off to Vermeil Wines we went. The tasting room is just a couple blocks away, so bring your walking shoes because it’s the easiest way to get around town. Vermeil Wines has an inside and outside tasting room, both of which are Fido-friendly and comfortable. Their wine educators are extremely knowledgeable, and I highly recommend the wine and chocolate pairing. In fact, I had two! The chocolates can also be purchased in town from Anette’s Chocolates. They melt in your mouth and are some of the best chocolates I’ve ever had! If you prefer bubbly, check out one of the newer Downtown Napa tasting rooms called Be Bubbly. wonderful. For dinner, we decided on Compline Wine Bar & Restaurant. It’s named after “the hour that signals the end of the working day, when vineyards fell quiet and the lights went on.” After one bite, I realized the lights weren’t the only things going on though, my tastebuds were lighting up as well. From their lengthy wine list to their rich variety of small and large plates, the flavors were extraordinary. Executive Chef Jammir Gray did an exquisite job at elevating well-known dishes as well as creating new ones. We started with the colorful crudo plate, paired with a creamy almond dip, before moving to the lamb ragu pappardelle, pork belly and duck fat fries. All three were exquisite and cooked to perfection. The next Fido-friendly hotel we stayed in was the elegant Andaz Napa. Located among some of the best shopping in town, the Andaz is a mixture of old-world design and contemporary sophistication. The hotel staff was extremely gracious and even provided reusable water bottles for you to refill throughout your stay at their filtered

But Finn always came back, with shining eyes and a long pink tongue darting towards me. In such moments of adrenaline-dumping relief, dogs are so easy to love. And the trust between the two of you grows stronger each time; there’s a mutual understanding of what the other needs. Smart dogs learn so quickly just how far they can push the boundaries when you give them a little space and trust. In the course of only a few weeks, I can learn just how a dog likes water to be flicked from the pool so they can dance in the droplets and play at snapping them from the sky. I’ll learn just how they like to be rubbed or tickled and under which trees they’ll seek shade in the garden. I’ll learn what makes them nervous or excited or defiant – and I think, when looking after a dog for a short time, I have to fast forward this learning process because I want them to feel safe and loved. The fact is, dogs learn me at the same time. It’s why every dog is hard to leave behind. We be-

Bow-Wows with Brains Ditzy dogs are fun to be around but there’s something seriously satisfying about hanging out with a brainy bow-wow. Border Collies like Finn are regularly deemed to be the smartest of them all. If you’re going to have a smart dog, you have to keep them entertained. When you keep coming home to chewed sofas, chances are your dog is just bored.

Storybook charms of nearby towns.

What keeps a smart dog happy? • Take them out with you. New sights, sounds and smells will engage their brains. • Rotate their toys. Keep switching toys, particularly puzzle toys, to keep things new and exciting. • Teach new tricks. If you think you’ve done them all, take a look online for inspiration. Don’t think you can exercise away the boredom of a smart dog. While walks are important, you don’t want to wind up with a really fit bored dog – they’ll just have the energy to destroy even more!
