Jake 2010-2019
W
E LOST ONE OF OUR PACK MEMBERS in November last year. Our sweet boxer, Jake whose goofy personality made true the saying that boxers are ‘clowns of the canine sect.’ He loved to
cuddle and was always ready to play with his two furry companions, Junior and Honey. He traveled with us while we reviewed Fido-friendly hotels for nine years. He also came along with us on our annual cross-country pet adoption tour each year, Get Your Licks on Route 66®. We adopted him at five months old from Idaho Humane Society and it was clear early on that he was a lap dog, even when he eventually weighed in at 60 pounds. Jake had an extraordinary life and we were lucky to have him for the length of time that we did. He succumbed suddenly to pancreatic cancer
and did not suffer for which we are grateful. Not a day goes by that we don’t miss this sweet spirit and we do take comfort in knowing that he is clowning around on Rainbow Bridge, entertaining all who make their way there. Rest in peace little buddy. SUSAN SIMS

Hate brushing your dogs' teeth? They don't like you doing it either! Bristly Brushing Stick is the only doggie toothbrush that lets them brush their teeth, and have fun doing it! It uses their natural urge to hold things down and chew, and is designed around their dental anatomy to let them actually brush their teeth.
Your dog WILL notice the difference!! OMEGA-3s are good fats responsible for basic cellular health in YOUR “furry friend’s” body tissues. A dog’s body does NOT produce Omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs) which are necessary for his/her healthy nutrition. They ARE the building blocks for a DOG’S health to ease issues of arthritis pain and irritating skin rashes.

Roselyn Sanchez’s Film “SATOS” Spotlights Homeless Puerto Rican Dogs By Elise Phillips-Margulis

R
20 Spring 2020
oselyn Sanchez, a gorgeous and multi-talented Latina actress, has shared the silver screen with the likes of John Travolta, Samuel Jackson, Jackie Chan, LL Cool J, Justin Timberlake, Kevin Spacey, Nick Cannon and many more. She’s also conquered the small screen. Last summer she starred in “Grand Hotel,” the highest-rated summertime drama series debut in four years. Eva Longoria, Executive Producer of Grand Hotel, is a close friend of Roselyn’s. They also worked together on the television program “Devious Maids.” Roselyn grew up with three brothers in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Her mother was a teacher and her father was an accountant. She began ballet classes at four years old and started piano lessons at six. Her mom entered her in beauty pageants, and she acted in commercials when she was 12. Roselyn won the Miss Puerto Rico Petite Pageant in 1993 and the international title of Miss America Petite in 1994. Roselyn moved to New York City when she was 21 to pursue her dream of becoming an actress. She took dancing, acting and singing lessons while looking for acting jobs. Roselyn, a well-known television personality in Puerto Rico, had to virtually start over in the United States. Her first big movie role was in Rush Hour 2. Growing up in Puerto Rico, Roselyn was always aware of the overpopulation of dogs and cats on the island. Roselyn’s new film, “SATOS,” is the culmination of her lifelong passion for animals. She explained her devotion to helping dogs and cats. “I feel it’s a huge responsibility to treat animals right. I hope ‘SATOS’ will speak to all those who value animals.”
500,000. Sadly, many are suffering from rabies. Roselyn calls the campaign to save the homeless dogs “a crusade” and says that “knowing all those animals are out there kills me.” She is hoping to help the dogs by showing the world how severe the problem is. Her message is, “spay and neuter your pets and adopt rather than buy dogs.” She urges, “If you see a stray animal, take her/him to a shelter.” Roselyn has worked with several animal rescue groups. She’s a business partner and spokesperson for PETA. She appeared in the “I’d Rather
heaven now, but she still has Maraca. She has lived with canines since she was a child. Roselyn shared that she is grateful that she was able to secure funding for SATOS quickly, because it often takes a while. “The process to accomplish SATOS was unexpected and so very awesome. I took a meeting with Paul Kampf, a great writer/ director/producer who has the capability of raising finance. I pitched him the idea since I was still writing the script. He immediately responded to it, and told me that his producing partner from a company called Equitas Entertainment was looking as her next project to give the opportunity to a first time female director and it had to be a short film. Well, that was me! Equitas got involved, we shot it in Puerto Rico with local crew and talent and we got ‘SATOS.’” The first film Roselyn produced, “Yellow,” was released in 2006. It took her seven years to raise the funds to produce it. “Contrary to the standard Hollywood story of taking many years for a movie to see the light of day, ‘SATOS’ was blessed with God Speed! It took less than a year to put all the components together and shoot. After you shoot you go through post production and that has been more time consuming. But over all, it didn’t take a long time.” Puerto Rico had a large stray dog population before Maria, but now the population has increased drastically because FEMA wouldn’t allow people to take their pets when they evacuated by airplane. Although there hasn’t been an official census, the film’s producers estimate the number of stray dogs to be between 300,000 and
Go Naked Than Wear Fur” campaign. She has also been involved with Save a Sato, a rescue organization founded in 1996, for years. In addition, she has also volunteered for Petsos, a Puerto Rican organization that helps displaced pets. She created her own foundation called RS Events for Life in 2013 to raise funds for children and animals. A couple of years ago, Roselyn organized The Triathlon for A Smile Marathon that benefitted the San Jorge Children’s Foundation and the Fundacion Caritas Alegres. They raised money for cancer research and to fix cleft pallets. Both events took place in Puerto Rico, and many of her celebrity friends flew over to support her causes. The children’s side of the charity focuses on health issues, education and living conditions. The Foundation produces yearly events identifying children’s hospitals in need, communities in need and Puerto Rican dog shelter in need. Some of the events that RS has held: • Four Roselyn Sanchez Triathlons for Life/ Smile event benefitting San Jorge Children’s Foundation, Casa Cuna De San Juan and Fundación Caritas Alegres. • The Amazing Paw Paw Race event with the Petsos Foundation to rebuild dog shelters in need and create a huge neuter/spade campaign, where thousands of stray dogs were fixed. • The Kids Couture Fashion Show to benefit pediatric cancer patients. • Patitas Por Una Causa Telethon, broadcasted on Wapa TV, raised funds for dog shelters and promoted adoption.
RS Events for Life hosts Spay-a-thons four times a year during which they spay/neuter 600 cats and dogs each day. In addition to being a prominent actress, Roselyn has experienced success in several other areas as a model, dancer, singer, songwriter, producer and book author. “SATOS” adds screenwriter and director to her resume. She won an ALMA (American Latino Media Arts) award for her work on the television show “Without a Trace.” Roselyn also has also been honored as a

“SATOS” is about three families that meet each other at the La Gloria animal shelter four months after Hurricane Maria devastated the island and destroyed the shelter. According to the film previews, “The families form a bond that will change their lives, priorities and dreams forever.” Roselyn wrote the screenplay herself. She has been sharing videos and table reads of the filming process on its Instagram page, @satosfilm. The Instagram site offers a plethora of adorable canine photos, including a photo of Roselyn with four of her dogs. Three are in doggie
chanteuse. Her debut album, “Borinqueńa,” earned her a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Music Video of “Amor Amor.” Another accolade awarded to Roselyn was the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s Excellence in Service Award for her commitment to the Hispanic Community. As if her life isn’t frenetic enough, Roselyn recently began recording a podcast on IHeartRadio with her husband, Eric Winter. He’s an actor, former model and author. The podcast, called “He Said, Ella Dijo,” consists of humorous banter about their lives, careers and more. They are the parents of two children and coauthored a children’s book called “Sebi and the Land of Cha Cha Cha” in 2017. The book was inspired by their daughter, Sabella. Roselyn and her family are Los Angeles residents, but travel to Puerto Rico when possible to visit her relatives. Roselyn is a true activist. Last year she and fellow actress America Ferrera traveled to a migrant shelter in Tijuana with some other artists. They spoke with immigration lawyers and shelter managers, listened to the inhabitants’ experiences of trying to move to the United States and colored pictures with children. Roselyn dedicated her film “to all animal lovers, shelters and rescue volunteers.” She hopes to own an animal sanctuary someday. She summarized her feelings about animal rescue. “It’s a hard and incredible job but so worth it.” Roselyn Sanchez is a superstar professionally and for animal and children.

Beagle named Pearl has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past year. In fact, you might say that she is a shadow of her former self…in the best possible way. You see, Pearl was a morbidly obese Beagle in 2019. The pudgy pooch was surrendered to the Humane Society of Western Montana
on December 26, 2018 and she weighed a whopping 50 pounds. Pearl had a slew of health issues which accompanied her weight prob-
lem, including a painful, dislocated hip and Cushing’s disease. But Jessie Maclay, with the animal shelter, wanted to do something to help. Having worked through extensive medical issues with her own dog, Gus, Maclay felt like she had the experience to help Pearl embark on a life-saving weight loss mission. Maclay tells FIDO Friendly, “I called Montana Water Dogs and asked if she would be willing to help a shelter pet and she said, absolutely! Bring her over so I can meet her. So, I brought Pearl home that night and we went swimming the next day. I thought she would be a shelter pet, stay at the shelter, and I would just take her swimming a couple times a week until she found a permanent home that could do that for her.” Maclay’s initial plan to simply assist Pearl in losing the excess weight quickly morphed into a quest to save the life of a dog who was meant to be hers. She tells FIDO Friendly, “My boyfriend and I both just fell in love with her immediately, so she wasn’t going anywhere.” Getting started on the weight loss journey was a daunting process because Pearl was in pain and woefully out of shape. In fact, she could walk only a few steps at a time before her legs would give out, and her initial time at Montana Water Dogs consisted of just minutes in the pool because she was too tired to do more. But Pearl’s limitations did not diminish her good nature. Maclay said, “she was one of the most genuinely happy dogs I have ever met. She always had very sweet, soft eyes. And her tail never ever stopped wagging. You could really see she wanted to be better, she never ever gave up and always pushed herself.” Between Pearl’s perseverance and Maclay’s dedication, the excess pounds began to melt away. Today, Pearl has dropped to a healthy weight that fluctuates between 20 and 22 pounds, and she maintains her svelte figure with the help of a special diet and low-calorie green bean snacks. Best of all, she gets to enjoy being a fit dog who gets to do “regular Beagle stuff.” Mcclay explains, “She bays at me all day long, she follows her nose wherever the smells take her. She loves all her dog friends at the shelter. And she goes paddle boarding with me in the summertime. She rides on the front of the board while I paddle. When we stop, she jumps off and swims around, hops back on and is ready to paddle some more.” It took a village to make Pearl’s weight loss transformation possible. The non-profit shelter, which relies completely on donations, was able to support Pearl on her journey thanks to Dr. Zirbel, with Animal Blessings Pet Hospital, who donated veterinary services, and Varen Chapman, with Montana Water Dogs, who donated 55 swim sessions. Maclay added, “Several other pet professionals donated countless PHOTO CREDIT: JESSIE MACL AY
sessions of massage, acupuncture, and laser therapy. And of course, people who would visit the shelter and live in Missoula, would donate money to the shelter to help Pearl also. I would have never been able to provide everything pearl needed if I had to do it all myself.” ‹ PENNY EIMS is a Freelance writer who shares her love of dogs (and all animals!) on the Pet Rescue Report.

CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA
Embrace a Slow Pace in Charming Charleston

This Port City Overflows With Southern Comfort. By Robin Tierney
E
VERY STAFF MEMBER AT THE JOHN RUTLEDGE HOUSE INN made us feel so welcome that we
knew our first visit would not be our last. This Charleston inn exudes so much historical charm that even canine guests can’t resist sniffing around. Built in 1763 by a signer of the U.S. Constitution, the exquisitely restored home’s architecture, gorgeous rooms with 12foot ceilings, carved Italian marble fireplaces, original plaster moldings, inlaid floors, graceful ironwork and romantic balconies captivate visitors--many of whom are repeat. Things of course have changed since 1791, when George Washington had breakfast with Mrs. Rutledge. Modern-day guests can look forward to a lavish made-to-order cooked breakfast served daily in the ballroom or on the private patio. John Rutledge House Inn is both a founding hotel in Historic Hotels of America and a Travel + Leisure Reader’s Choice award-winner. Its hospitality extends to Fido with a pet fee of $25 per night. But I must warn you of a problem: between the elegance, comfort, breakfast, afternoon tea and hors d’oeuvres, and evening port, sherry and brandy, it’s hard to crowbar oneself off the property. Good thing that you and Fido need walk barely a block to reach King Street, among the South’s most historic and architecturally significant streets. Sunny strolls take you past distinctive restaurants, pubs, galleries, boutiques and classic theaters. Don’t miss the Charleston City Market, which you can tour with Fido by your side. And speaking of tours, treat yourself to a walking tour on day one of your visit. On an excellent Bulldog Tour, offered daily, our group included four large and tiny canines as we learned about the Holy City’s rich history and history-makers from merchants to military leaders, antebellum homes with grand porches, architecture (such as Rainbow Row), gardens and secret alleys. Near the peninsula’s harbor, White Point Garden faces the juncture where the Ashley

are great spots for your pups to exercise and socialize. Each dog park features large and small dog sections, and the dog park at James Island County Park has a large lake in which your dog can swim and play. Charleston’s embarrassment of riches also includes a bevy of classic Lowcountry restaurants and newer farm-to-table eateries competing for your dining dollars, so leave your diet at home and surrender to your inner glutton. Fido cannot accompany you to a posh multi-course dinner inside romantic vine-covered Circa 1886 or New Southern cuisine at The Grocery. However, plenty of terrific venues offer lovely patio seating in this perfect city for outdoor dining daybreak to late-night. and house-crafted drinks. The light-as-air hummus rekindled my long-lost love for this Mediterranean favorite. The signature carrot dish shoots this root veggie to stardom. The paperthin-sliced butternut squash and red cabbage slaw merit dream status. Basic Kitchen powers you up with deliciously seasoned veggies, legumes, whole grain bowls (try the Rainbow), green juices and a zesty turmeric tonic ginger soda. Other wag-worthy places include Brown Dog Deli, Fuel Cantina’s courtyard and Poogan’s Porch, named for a pooch with a very special story. Indeed, Charleston enchants with so many attractions to check out that you’ll probably wish you didn’t have to check out of your lodging.

Fostering Hope Home2 Suites Hotel in Biloxi is working in partnership with The Humane Society of South Mississippi to help place shelter pets. By Tamra Bolton
W
hen traveling, people look for certain amenities that fit their idea of a perfect getaway – valet parking, gourmet breakfast, in-room massages or personal shoppers – but there is one hotel that offers none of these luxuries and yet has managed to attract the attention of TRAVEL+LEISURE,
USA TODAY, and Southern Living. Home2 Suites Hotel in Biloxi, Mississippi may look plain on the outside, but
the minute you step into the lobby you know this is no ordinary hotel. Large dog kennels situated near the bright lobby windows greet guests at this oneof-a-kind extended stay hotel where you have the option of fostering one of their friendly Fido’s during your visit. The brainchild of the hotel sales director, Teresa Johnston, the “Fostering Hope” program has placed over 33 dogs since its inception in October 2018. Working in partnership with The Humane Society of South Mississippi, the hotel’s concept is bringing the business world and community together. With over 8,000 dogs per year being sheltered at the South Mississippi facility, it is the largest of its kind in the state. The shelter is excited about bringing this outreach program to the hotel and seeing the positive response. Most people staying at the hotel are there for weeks, sometimes even months, given the hotel’s close proximity to nearby Navy and Air Force bases. This allows those traveling to have a furry friend to keep them company and possibly adopt when they go home. Bianca Janik, the shelter’s relations manager, says that the “Fostering Hope” plan also frees up space at the shelter so they can help more dogs, another positive aspect of the hotel’s unique program. However, not everyone is always approved for adopting a furry friend from the hotel, but Janik says they make every effort to find the perfect match, even inviting the guest to visit the shelter, ensuring a long and happy relationship with their chosen pooch. Guests can sign up to foster a dog during their stay with no obligation and enjoy some companionship as long as they are at the hotel. If they do decide to keep the dog and are approved, it costs $50 to adopt. The pets are sent home with updated medical evaluations – spay/neutering, microchips, vaccinations, and preventative heart worm medication. This hotel is close to the gorgeous white sandy beaches of the Gulf Coast, museums, casinos, and great shopping. They are pet-friendly of course, but require a non-refundable fee of $75 and have a weight limit of 75 lbs., and medium size limit. No worries though, if you can’t bring your Fido, just foster while you’re there and help the Humane Society make room for more animals that need help. So, the next time you are close to the Gulf Coast, check out the Home2 Suites in Biloxi…you may find a new forever friend.

Getaway in the fairy tale land of Zagori
An underrated destination for nature lovers in Greece. By Maria Himmich The bridge of Plakida-Kalogeriko.
42 Spring 2020
F
OR THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS, I HAVE BEEN LIVING IN GREECE WITH MY DOG SHARK. We jump on every occasion to explore the coun-
try’s underrated destinations. After Meteora, Crete and the Peloponnese, we recently discovered a hidden gem in Northwest Greece. The
municipality of Zagori, in the region of Epirus, lies in an area of 405 square miles and hosts 46 picturesque villages. It belongs to the National Park of Northern Pindos and Vikos-Aoos Geopark. This mountainous land is traversed by two majestic rivers, Aoos and Voidomatis, and hosts the jewel of Epirus: the Vikos Gorge. It is considered as one of the deepest (2,950 ft) and narrowest (3,600 ft) canyons worldwide. As a true nature lover, I instantly felt attracted when I saw the pictures of this landscape on the Internet. At the very first opportunity, I hit the road with Shark. We settled down in a Fido-friendly guesthouse called Orestis House in the village of Ano Pedina. I met three young women from Athens thanks to my dog who always helps me socialize when I travel solo. We decided to

from the picturesque Kapesovo village. As we gained altitude, the views on the Mezaria ravine were outstanding. Our gratification was to enjoy a delicious meal in the outdoor tavern of Vradeto, which is the highest village in the municipality. On our way back, we stopped by the bridge of Plakida-Kalogeriko, one of the 140 stone arch bridges in Zagori. On the second day, my plan was to admire the Vikos Gorge from two easily accessible spots. The first one is Oxya viewpoint, located just a short walk from the parking lot. The scenery offers an astonishing beauty. I could hardly take my eyes off the vertiginous canyon. The second spot is concealed behind the Monastery of Aghia Paraskevi in Monodendri village, 4.5 miles away from Oxya. The panorama is also breathtaking. Later, Shark and I went to Dilofo, one of the most best preserved villages of Zagori. Its authentic architecture is based on local materials, mainly wood and grey drystone. Since the permanent residents are very few, it looks like a ghost village. The atmosphere was mystical as the rosy colors of the sunset reflected on the snowcapped mountains. On the third day, we first headed to Vikos village, at the Northern entrance of the canyon. This viewpoint is also easy to access. It is close to the great Vikos Herbs shop. Indeed, the Zagori ecosystem is famous for its unseen variety of healing plants. After that, we stopped at the Monastery of Panagia Spiliotissa to enjoy an enchanting walk through a forest of sycamore trees by the Voidomatis river. Then, we took a serpentine road towards the two settlements of Papigo. Between them are nestled the natural pools of Ovires filled with crystal clear water suitable for swimming. Avoid the problem altogether when you build a raised garden bed during your next free afternoon. It’ll be harder for your dog to jump up and dig, especially if your flowerbed is extra high. 5. Stay Inside After Spraying Sometimes you’ll need to spray your garden to get rid of and prevent pests. You might find all-natural options, but it’s still safer to
