Identity theft We would like to bring to your attention the threats that are related to a crime which has significantly increased in volume over the last years, stemming from the increasing amount of personal information that is available to criminals either physically (e.g. bills, documents) or digitally (e.g. emails, social media). As a victim of identity theft, you could spend an average of £1,190 and 175 hours to get your life back on track. Though that statistic may be alarming, you can stay one step ahead of identity thieves with the following safety precautions.

Cookies

Post Precautions

To combat cookies, reconfigure your browser to individually approve cookies.

Retrieve your post every day—do not let it build up.

Shred or destroy unwanted post – don’t let some go through your bins.

Pay attention to when you should receive bills.

When travelling, have your post held by Royal Mail or ask a neighbour to collect it for you each day.

If you move home, notify Royal Mail of your new address and put a redirect on for at least a year.

Don’t leave important post in an unsecured location, even if it’s a place you think things are secure.

Personal Items and Information Precautions •

Carry only what you absolutely need to, and keep an itemised list at home of what you carry.

Provide your personal information to businesses on a ‘need to know’ basis only.

Shred or destroy personal and financial documents that you do not want to keep.

Monitor your credit report and regularly check your bank statements for any suspicious activity.

Cookies are placed on your computer every time you visit a website. They store information about your computer preferences and personal details and retrieve it later.

Helpful Hints Spam, or electronic junk mail, is not only annoying; it is also dangerous for your computer. In fact, many computer viruses are transmitted via email and infect the computer’s hard drive once emails are opened. Never open an email or attachment if you are unsure of where it is coming from. If you receive an email from someone you know that seems out of character or just says “open this” with an attachment, contact them separately to see if they themselves have been hacked. Keep a separate email address just for signing up to new websites, especially if not well known to you. That way if they sell the address to spammers or worse, you can close down this address and set up a new one. If you use the website a lot, you can always change it to your main email address at a later time. We hope you find these tips insightful and that by reading you are more aware of threats relating to identity theft, and how to protect yourself against it.

Of course, the main place that people suffer identity theft these days is the internet. To protect yourself and your family against internet predators wishing to obtain your personal information, it is wise to understand the various ways in which your privacy can be breached.

Phishing To protect against phishing spam: •

Be sceptical of urgent email requests for personal or financial information.

Only email personal or financial information to secure websites that start with https://.

Install anti-virus software on your computer and make sure it remains up to date.

Spyware When downloading free items on the internet, you also run the risk of downloading software called spyware that tracks your internet usage activity. To combat spyware, install anti-spyware software that protects your computer against these harmful download add-ons.

MPs are getting involved in Stockport William Wragg MP for Hazel Grove has just completed his mobility assessment at Shopmobility Stockport. The assessment has recently been introduced by the BHTA for all its members including Shopmobility schemes.

An exciting new scheme for Lowestoft Shopmobility We are proud to introduce a new scheme for Lowestoft in partnership with “Sensing Change”. Sensing Change offer people with sight loss a “My Guide” Service which provide trained volunteer sighted guides who are matched to people with sight loss, to enable them to get out and about to increase confidence and reduce isolation. Normally Shopmobility would be hiring our scooters or wheelchairs to do this, but we became aware that it is not only people with mobility problems who need help with their shopping, but people with sight loss too. The new Shopmobility scheme is going to be called “Dial-AGuide” and can be accessed by calling Lowestoft Shopmobility on 01502 588857 or emailing lowestoftshopmob@btconnect. com. Volunteers are given free training to become qualified Community Sighted Guides. We have received funding for a 12 month pilot scheme to see how it goes. People can phone up, book a day and time to shop, and be matched to a Guide by our Co-ordinator Eddie. If you need any more details please contact us on the number or email above. We do hope that the community in Lowestoft will come forward to help with this very worth-while scheme, a new “Shopmobility” scheme which can make a great difference to the life of a person with sight loss. Margaret Oldham M.B.E. Vice-Chair of Lowestoft Shopmobility

William was put through his paces in a Shoprider Torino by Stockport co-ordinator John Leatherbarrow. He received a signed copy of the assessment and a SUPA (Scooter User Proficient Award) certificate. After that he was taken on a tour of the shopping centre by Stockport vice-chair Stephanie Ormerod, with chair Darren Dalby-Oldham and marketing director Sam Smith, to see what it is like for people with a mobility impairment, William earlier in the year came and spoke to the board of Shopmobility Stockport to increase his awareness of the issues faced by disabled people. William is the latest in a long line of MPs, mayors and local councillors who have taken the scooter challenge at Shopmobility Stockport.

Shopmobility lifts the trophy at Stockport Carnival – again! Last year we featured Stockport’s carnival entry this year we are please to see they went for it again and won again! This year was a different award read more below. For the second year running Shopmobility Stockport has won a prize in the Stockport Carnival. Last year it was Best Fancy Dress. This year it is Best Decorated Float (Trade)!

Next year’s theme? Watch this space! So far we have done the Wild West, ‘mobility angels’ (bikers) and the Roaring Twenties. There seems to be no limit to the imagination of our trustees.

The team at Stockport enter both local carnivals - Stockport and Hazel Grove, every year and are no strangers to winning trophies thanks to the inventiveness and resourcefulness of some of the trustee directors who take part. This year’s theme was Rio, trialled at Hazel Grove and reprised on a bigger scale with more vehicles, at Stockport a week later. For both carnivals the fleet was transported to the starting point by our new supplier Mobility Choices to save on battery power. The parade routes are one to two miles and there is a carnival in a local park to follow. Both carnivals provide an excellent opportunity to raise the profile of Shopmobility whilst having plenty of fun at the same time. Stockport is fortunate to have a very talented board of trustees who like taking part in these events.

A wheely good day – despite the weather at Newton Abbot! Shoppers in the pedestrianised heart of Newton Abbot on Saturday June 13th were greeted by an array of vehicles, all there to demonstrate the importance of personal mobility. The ‘Wheely Good Day’ was staged by the town’s Community Transport Association (NACTA) whose staff and volunteers are celebrating 25 years of keeping less mobile or isolated people in touch with the wider world. The event featured wheelchair friendly minibuses, shopmobility scooters, accessible cars produced by Trusham firm GM Coachworks, classic bicycles and a vintage London double decker bus promoting the South Devon Railway. Also taking part were the Institute of Advanced Motorists, and advice group Transport for Your Community. Heavy rain however forced cancellations of a display by members of the Lodge Indoor Skate Park, children’s dances and live music.

“The weather was bad

to start with, but we still had a great day, making contact with hundreds of people”

‘The weather was bad to start with, but we still had a great day, making contact with hundreds of people,’ said NACTA Manager Kay Yendall. ‘Some didn’t realise we offer such a wide range of services, such as daily living aids, while others expressed an interest in becoming volunteer drivers which is marvelous. ‘Shoppers were very generous in their words of support for NACTA, they also dug deep and bought plenty of tickets for our Silver Anniversary Draw that took place on 31 August. ‘We’re very grateful to everyone who turned up, not least Newton Abbot Mayor Cllr Liz Roberts who has adopted NACTA as her charity for the year, Town Centre Development Manager Sally Henley who made sure everything went well and The Clock Tower café who supplied us with cut price drinks.’

6

NACTA has other Silver Anniversary events lined up, such as a minibus pull on Saturday September 17, postponed from April. A £100 prize awaits the quickest team to pull the three-tonne vehicle along a 50m course by the St Leonard’s Tower. Chairman Dave Bray said: ‘We’re hoping the community will literally pull with us

on this one and raise plenty of cash to support our vital services. ‘For the past 25 years our minibuses and volunteers’ cars have provided thousands of people with the sort of mobility most of us take for granted.

BHTA Code of Practice for Shopmobility Schemes “I have recently been asked “so what’s the relevance of the BHTA Code of Practice for Shopmobility schemes?” Well, it may surprise you to learn that over half of the schemes in the National Federation are actively selling items or charging customers for hire. Every scheme that does so is caught by exactly the same consumer legislation as any other trading business. By “consumer” I mean any member of the public buying something from you for their own personal use (ie not a business). The BHTA Code of Practice is designed to complement the legislation, setting out best practice that your customers can rely on. There may be some sections which do not apply (if, for example, you do not sell to people in their own home or over the internet), but the over-riding principles, and the rules about the information the customer can expect to have before committing to the sale will apply to all of you. Even if you do not charge, you are providing a service and your customer can expect to receive clear information, and a service

that is delivered “with reasonable care and skill” (Consumer Rights Act). For your customers the biggest benefit of interacting with you will be the access that the code provides to the BHTA mediation and arbitration scheme if things go wrong and they are unable to resolve the matter direct with you. The code obliges you to signpost them to us if you find yourselves at an impasse and this also then helps you meet your obligations under a little-known piece of legislation about “alternative dispute resolution”. So, have another look at the Code of Practice, read it through and think about which bits DO apply to the way you operate. Make sure you tell your customers about how you handle complaints (the Consumer Contracts regulations require you to do that) and signpost them to us as the end stage of that process. I’ll ask Donna to send you through our advice on the wording to use. If you have any questions specifically about interpretation of the code for your organisation, drop me an email: sarah.lepak@ bhta.com” About the Author: Sarah Lepak is the Director of Governance and Policy at BHTA, with responsibility for the BHTA Code of Practice

WESTMINSTER WATCH by Lord Rennard

Long term sustainability of the NHS – have your say! A Select Committee has been set up by the House of Lords to look at the long term sustainability of the NHS and it will report by the end of March 2017. Its work was discussed at a dinner recently hosted in Westminster for the BHTA by Labour’s Health spokesperson in the Lords, Lord Hunt of Kings Heath. A former Health Minister, Philip Hunt emphasised in his remarks the need to fully integrate health and social care, whilst recognising the difficulty of bringing together systems based on different models of payment. Lord Willis of Knaresborough, a member of the select Committee, also attended the event and he spoke at it about the importance of innovation and the role of the Assistive Technology sector, which he said is very effectively represented by the BHTA.

We would like to hear from all sections and any interested member companies about what they would like to see in a BHTA submission. We will advise shortly on the timetable for making submissions once this has been agreed by the Select Committee. In the meantime, any initial thoughts should be sent to chris.rennard@bhta.com. More details of the Select Committee can be found at: http://www.parliament. uk/business/committees/committees-a-z/lords-select/nhssustainability-committee/

The first session of the Committee heard from senior officials from the Department of Health and the Department for Communities and Local Government. They were considering questions such as:

The day before the referendum vote, I tweeted that it would be 2% either way. In the end the Leave campaign won by 51.9% to 48.1%. It is not clear exactly how long our membership of the EU will continue, but after an amazing series of political events, the new Prime Minister Theresa May will now be planning for Brexit.

What long-term thinking is taking place within Government about the sustainability of the NHS over the next 15-20 years?

To what extent is the current healthcare funding envelope realistic?

What analysis has the Government done on different pricing structures and financial systems to help determine where money might be best spent?

The potential impact of tariffs, customs charges and rules of origin declarations on EU trade

The potential impact of non-tariff barriers to service trade with the EU

What is the Government’s workforce planning for the next 15-20 years?

Trade outside the EU in countries with which the EU has trade deals

What are the practical changes required to provide the population with an integrated National Health and Care Service?

Current regulations and standards influenced by the EU which may now be renegotiated 5.

To what extent is digitisation of data and services happening?

What long-term strategy do you have for public health and prevention?

The Committee will not look at structural issues requiring re-organisation, but I expect them to look at issues such as taxation, personal health budgets, procurement and the role of the private sector. The BHTA will be seeking to make representations to it along the lines set out last year in our Manifesto: http://www.bhta.net/manifesto. In this document we made the case for how our member companies can help with improving patient care, getting better long term value for the taxpayer, and helping stimulate economic growth to pay for it.

Brexit

After the vote the BHTA issued a briefing to members suggesting the need to consider:

Upcoming European legislation, its application in the UK and the significance Brussels may have going forward: •

Disruption to EU programmes and funding

The future of migration, including current EU residents and future immigration policy

Potential for further devolution in the UK

Investment decisions, contracts and licenses that refer to EU legislation

There remains a danger of a recession, but the Government is clearly acting to try and maintain confidence. It may even feel that it needs to ask the country to give it a vote of confidence in a General Election much sooner than that which is due in 2020.

Steve said: “BHTA has a wide ranging role to play in the healthcare sector, whether that be at local level working with retailers, within the standards bodies with manufacturers or in parliament helping to shape the future of the industry in some difficult times.

BHTA/ICB Golf day was held at the Nottinghamshire Golf & Country Club The British weather provided all our golfers with a great day out in Nottingham. Thirteen teams from all sections and guests of BHTA fought to be crowned team of the year. In the end it was lucky 13 who came through to win with team Craig Kitchen (ICB), Mike Lord (BHTA) and Tony Mercer (Kirton Healthcare Group). It was great to have Matt and Nicki Isherwood at the event to present the Phil Isherwood trophy to Dom Claxton (CSS Europe). Matt Isherwood picked up the second individual prize pictured here receiving his award from Nicki. After the golf all teams had a barbeque lunch followed by the presentation of awards. We already have members and guests wanting to be kept up to date about the next golf day in 2017 and we will keep you all posted. A big thanks to all players and companies who supported the golf day and made it a really good social event and to the ICB and BHTA teams who looked after everyone on the day. Mobility Roadshow takes pole position at Silverstone The Mobility Roadshow 2016 was held at the home of the UK Grand Prix, Silverstone. After initial first day problems surrounding the car parking and bus transfers, the weekend settled down and offered visitors the chance to try out a wide range of cars and mobility products. Both the BHTA and Shopmobility had stands at the show and it gave a good chance to hear the value and respect held for both organisations. At the BHTA stand, we were busy engaging with consumers and discussing the Code of Practice, Trading Standards and the benefits of buying from our members. We were able to assist some consumers with specific mobility questions and were even able to re-direct them to members who were exhibiting at the show and further afield where relevant. Our Shopmobility stand was able to meet with visiting members and consumers who all spoke highly of the federation. The main topic of conversation was the difficulties in obtaining and maintaining funding for the Shopmobility schemes; an ongoing challenge faced by many schemes across the UK. The Mobility Roadshow also featured the ‘Get Going Live’ event, providing young drivers with disabilities an opportunity to explore their mobility options for the future. Drivers young or old had the unique chance to not only consider what car they were interested in, but also how the vehicles worked with hoists and ramps for mobility products found on the market. It’s not unusual for the consumers to come with a preconceived idea of what they want, only to change their minds as they match their options together and test drive the variety of models available. There also has to be a bit of kudos of being able to say you have driven the Silverstone circuit, even if at a more leisurely speed to World Champion Lewis Hamilton. No date or venue has been released for 2017 but we will be sure and keep you posted as soon as we know. If you want to have a look at the Silverstone event, please visit their website at: www.mobilityroadshow.co.uk/
