YMCA-SNOCO.ORG

DEAR FRIENDS The Y has a long history of strengthening community because we are in the communities we serve. We are a powerful association of men, women, and children joined together by a shared commitment to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living, and fostering a sense of social responsibility. We recently adopted a new mission statement for the YMCA of Snohomish that expresses our intentions: To inspire, nurture, and strengthen culturally vibrant communities through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. With this mission in mind, we engage our members, volunteers, staff, donors, and partners to take on the most urgent needs in our community. Every day, we work across Snohomish County to support the people and neighborhoods that need us most by addressing community issues such as school readiness, chronic disease, and youth development. Working together we create lasting change. During 2013 our community collaborations were strong. We partnered with the Snohomish County Health Leadership Coalition to provide all fifth grade students with free YMCA access through the Gear Up & Go! program - a unique approach to getting kids active that we believe will become a national model. Our partnership with the Monroe School District through the Jump Start program is preparing incoming kindergarteners to be better learners from the first day of school, and our work with the Casino Road Kids Ministries provides positive adult role models and academic support for deserving students that are facing significant obstacles. In cooperation with Goodwill, we added ESOL (English for speakers of other languages) classes for adults throughout the county. And finally, we continue to provide free swim lessons to all Hawthorne Elementary third graders. Our work in the Stanwood-Camano community continues to grow as well. It’s clear that the real value of a YMCA is not only a building – it’s the impact of Y programs. The Y collaborated with the school district for a second year to provide free summer activities to more than 175 kids. In addition, teens were able participate in many service activities through the Y-Achievers program at Port Susan Middle School and Stanwood High School. The YMCA of Snohomish County asks individuals and businesses to support our work in the community through the Annual Campaign that underwrites our financial assistance program that last year provided more than $2 million in direct support to kids and families. These gifts also support a number of Y youth programs that are free to participants like the Minority Achievers Program (MAP) and Actively Changing Together (ACT!) - the Y’s youth obesity prevention program. Everything we do at the Y – from fitness classes, to cancer survivor programs, to afterschool programming, to youth obesity prevention – is designed to meet the changing needs of our Y member families and the communities where we live and work. Thank you for your generous support of financial contributions, volunteer hours, and advocacy in the communities that we serve. We look forward to working with you as we continue to positively impact the lives of those in our community.

ANNUAL CAMPAIGN The YMCA of Snohomish County makes every effort to ensure that no person, especially youth, will be denied access to programs and membership because of financial hardship. The YMCA’s Financial Assistance Program is supported by contributions to the Annual Campaign. During 2013, $2,107,414 was provided in direct financial assistance to 10,426 individuals. In addition, through the generosity of our donors, United Way, members, and specific program grants, we were able to provide subsidized programs and services to thousands of kids, youth, and families who would not otherwise be able to participate, thus extending opportunities and increasing access to YMCA asset-building programs in extraordinary ways.

THE HERITAGE CLUB The Heritage Club is a special group of people who believe in the purpose and traditions of the YMCA and want to ensure this heritage of values is continued for future generations. Heritage Club members support the YMCA of Snohomish County through either a direct contribution to the YMCA Endowment Fund or by including the YMCA in their estate plans. The purpose of the Heritage Club is to encourage thoughtful gifts as a primary means of building a strong endowment capable of providing lasting support for the YMCA mission for years to come. During 2013, the YMCA Endowment Fund provided $85,000 of financial support to many programs and services offered through the YMCA’s branch and affiliate locations.

VOLUNTEER IMPACT: KIERA’S STORY Kiera may be young, but she already has a passion for giving back to her community. She collected clothing and blanket donations for the homeless over the holidays, and organized a school supplies drive for victims of the tornadoes in Oklahoma. She also volunteers at a local thrift store, helping to sort the donations. When she learned about the YMCA Kick-A-Thon, and the programs the YMCA Annual Campaign supports, she became excited and set out to raise money for the event. She established a personal goal of raising $188, and quickly surpassed it. Kiera raised $429, which was more than any other participant by several hundred dollars! “Karate teaches self-confidence and discipline. I really like karate and want kids that cannot afford it to be able to come also. I like helping other people, it’s fun!”
