SUMMER 2015

We are here!

Well here we go again…it’s that time again and your summer newsletter is here! It only seems like a few weeks ago that I was sat here penning the spring introduction and so much has happened in what seems such a short space of time… Center Parcs has been (and gone) and what a superb weekend was had by all – ‘P’ was the fancy dress theme and as you can imagine the costumes came in all guises and as usually Spice members didn’t let us down; there was a great quiz, group sports, bike rides, a leisurely walk and our fantastic Double x Triple Challenge event (including scavenger hunt, photo and pose competition) plus the usual shenanigans all laid on to make a very memorable weekend. And a special thank you to the members that contributed to the testimonial video. In the spring newsletter you should have received a car sticker which we hope is now pride of place on your chosen vehicle. We did get some pictures sent to us and it’s all appreciated to help spread the Spice word. If you do not have one please ask your local office and they can send one out to you. We a have also had a few Facebook competitions recently including a fun Spice pet picture competition where we got pets in some very unusual situations! We also have been working hard to bring more Spice benefits to you so along with the familiar discounts offered with Exodus and Club Dance holidays there are a couple of new ones with

Go Ape and Merlin Attractions which incorporates 18 attractions up and down the country - if you love this kind of adrenaline thrill there are many attractions you could visit including Alton Towers. Some might say it’s not the best time to start working with Alton Towers however we are assured that the whole park has been cleared for safety. We will be promoting exclusive Go Ape and Merlin Attraction days so watch this space. Over the coming pages you’ll not only find your local group quarterly round up but hopefully some interesting articles and a piece on Chilling out with Spice plus a brand new concept to promote healthy living - Zestember!

So until next time what are you waiting for…Live your Dream. Ian Purvis Spice UK

Name: Steve Norman‫‏‬ Group: Yorkshire Name: Leslie Johnston Group: Scotland How long have you been a Spice member? I have been a member for just under a year Why did you join Spice? I joined Spice to experience many different activities I would not achieve on my own whilst making new friends from all over the UK. What has been your favourite event? My favourite event was Pitlochry bargain break weekend walking dancing eating laughing and making new friends. Most challenging event was the tank driving experience but a great stress buster I have been on 3 weekends in the UK with Spice Ballachulish, Pitlochry and Seahouses all were brilliant. I am going to Thailand in October which I am very excited about.

What would be your advice for a new member? My advice to new members would be to remember everyone has taken that first step on a first event. Plan an adventure activity and go for it, as everyone is welcoming. Have you any funny Spice moment you care to share? Funniest moment has to be splattered with mud whilst tank driving. What is your life philosophy in one sentence. Live Love Laugh and try to keep a life balance. Your favourite movie? Evita the musical. Four people (alive or dead) you’d invite to your dream dinner party? Julie Walters, Rick Stein, My late Grandfather and The Dalai Lama. Most treasured belonging? I treasure photographs and all the memories that go with them.

How long have you been a Spice member? About 9 years Why did you join Spice? Wanted to balance a ‘Normal’ day job with a bucket full of madness at the weekends! What has been your favourite event? Where to start. Probably the fire breathing as I got to convince my kids that Daddy was part Dragon!!! What has been your most challenging event? Yorkshire 3 peaks walk. 26miles over 3 large hills in under 11hrs...phew! What is your funniest memory in Spice? Being on a Latin dance weekend and being fed chocolate dipped strawberries by the delightfully camp waiter. What would be your advice for a new member? Carpe Diem....seize the day and just go for it. Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday? Not currently but I have been eyeing up the white water rafting trip down though the Grand Canyon. Big one from the ‘ole bucket list. Have you an embarrassing Spice moment? Waddling down the street in the ‘duck-type’ outfit when doing River Bugging in Scotland. What is your life philosophy in one sentence. It’s not about the amount of breaths you take in life, but the amount of times your breath is taken away!!! Four people (alive or dead) you’d invite to your dream dinner party? Harrison Ford: The paramount movie star, from Han Solo to Indiana Jones, Confucius: Chinese teacher, editor, politician, and philosopher, Julius Caesar: Emperor or tyrant, either way a fascinating man in a fascinating time, Stephen Fry: QI host, ultimate sapiosexual and master of witty banter.

Name:Mark Phillips Group: West Midlands How long have you been a Spice Member? I have been a spice member on and off for almost 7 years Why did you join Spice? I joined Spice to meet new friends and do more interesting events after my break-up. Now I have the new best friends in the world from Spice which will be friends for life. What has been your favourite event? My favourite event has been the fire eating. I believe it was my first or second event and I haven’t looked back since. Life is there to be lived and break the norm of everyday living. It gave me the confidence to try new things and afterwards I believed I could solve any problem after facing a flame coming towards me in the wind and swallowing it lol. What would be your advice for a new member? Take the plunge and book events where you are going to meet new people and build new friendships. Break tradition and your daily schedule and prove it to yourself that you make the most out of life and anything is possible. Have you an embarrassing Spice moment? Lots of embarrassing moments in Spice but all happy memories, It’s A Knockout event went into event hung-over and completely went the wrong way on the course still drunk from the night before and cost our team the points oh dear! What is your life philosophy in one sentence. Live your day as its your last day on earth as it will never come around again

Your favourite movie? Shawshank Redemption - avoided it for years, but when I eventually watched it I was blown away!

Your favourite movie? ‘One Moment in Time’ with Christopher Reeve which hides my romantic side very well but I love the idea of time travel and of course a happy ending.

Most treasured belonging? Being chief Geek I would have to say my PC! It’s my link to the outside crazy world of the internet, my chronicler of memories, and my escape from reality via Games.

Four people (alive or dead) you’d invite to your dream dinner party? Gordon Ramsey- Shania TwainTom Jones- Martin Johnston

Coordinator’s Corner Welcome to the Summer quarterly newsletter – let’s hope we get some fantastic weather to go along with some of the great events we have on offer. As ever the newsletter just shows a snapshot of events that we have for the next few months with new ones being added all the time – the best place to keep up to date is on our website www.spiceyorks.com where you can filter for new events and by event category too. Just to answer a question we have been asked a couple of times recently – if you do see an event that is showing availability for the same evening or weekend when the office is shut, we have left the event open so that late bookings are welcome. We monitor the bookings as they come in and let the hosts know to expect you so please don’t hesitate to book. The next few months see lots of favourites on the agenda with the National Dragon Boat Racing weekend, our Masham Beer & BBQ, Beverley Friary & Robin Hoods Bay weekends. There are plenty of great day and evening events too. We also have a couple of great paddling events coming up too so you can make the most of the summer weather. Do make the most of the light summer evenings and join us on our evening rambles too. We would like to welcome Paul Timewell to the Spice team – if you are from Sheffield you will no doubt know Paul from his volunteer hosting on events including the Ten Pin, Quizzes, Music Club and Curry nights. Paul will be helping us more going forward by coming up with ideas for new events and getting feedback whilst out and about on events with you. If you do have any suggestions for events please feel free to let Paul know or go via the usual route of letting us know at the office. We would also like to welcome our newest walk leader Paul Jones – Paul led a couple of walks for us on our Kirkby Stephen Bunk Barn weekend earlier in the year and got great feedback so we have asked him to put a few walks on for us in the coming months. They will become a regular in the programme if they are well supported. So look out for these walks: Windy Hill – Blackstone Edge 19th July, Bleaklow Area of Dark Peak 16th August and Saddleworth 27th September. Also worth a mention is our Yorkshire Day Summer Ball coming up on 1st August – celebrating all things Yorkshire of course! We hope to see you there. In the meantime we hope you have a fabulous summer and look forward to seeing you out & about in the sunshine (we hope) over the next few months.

Lauren

Welcome to new members You’ve taken the first steps and joined Spice; the next step is to come along to your first event. We know this can be a daunting prospect when you don’t know anyone else in the group but there’s no need to be apprehensive, Spice are a friendly bunch. Most of us come along on our own to events so we’re all well used to meeting and welcoming new people. A great way of getting into Spice is by booking your first events right away and getting your first event “under your belt”. Even better is to try a weekend away and get to know a smaller group of people really well. If you’ve not been to a Spice Preview Night we hold them every month (see page 13 for dates) so do make an effort to come to one of these, and please next time we are on an event, come up and say hello so we can put a face to the name! If you have any queries at all, please give us a call in the office and we will always do our utmost to help you.

Contact us The Spice office is open from 10am until 6pm Monday to Friday except on public holidays. You can contact us on 0845 094 2200 or 0161 864 2554 during these hours or leave a message on the 24 hour answerphone. We also run a free raffle for all who attend (existing members too) with events as the prizes – just to add a touch of Spice to the evening. The plan is to welcome everyone, talk through the basics of Spice, give you more info on the coming programme and an opportunity to book on events if you like. You can of course book in the usual ways (phone, web, or post - but remember the Spice motto – “You snooze, you lose – you rest, you rust!” Jonathan and enthusiastic volunteers will be on hand to answer any queries you may have and there may be an opportunity to watch the Spice DVD. Remember, everyone who attends is in the same boat so don’t be nervous about attending, come on your own (lots of people do) or come with a friend. Call us to book in advance or just turn up - either way, do come and see what you’ve been missing!!

Rambles - Grading System

Spice Rambles Rambles: Essential Information All Spice walks are designed to be fun, enjoyable, and above all, safe. All the walk leaders we use are experienced and carry first aid and emergency equipment but all walkers must ensure that they are properly equipped for the conditions. If you are a newcomer to Spice Rambles, please feel free to contact the walk leaders through the Spice Office. The leaders will be happy to discuss the appropriate type of clothing and equipment for use on Spice walks but here are a few general points to bear in mind. No jeans or trainers, please. Any Spice Ramble of Grade 3 or harder may involve walking over open country, not necessarily over welldefined paths, and it should not be assumed that you are going for a stroll in the park. You should wear warm clothing, preferably in the form of several layers, and all walkers must bring waterproof jackets and trousers. Happily, accidents and injuries are extremely rare but "injuries" are often caused by ill-fitting boots or inappropriate socks. A relatively minor injury out in the wilds can result in the walk being curtailed, so please ensure that you are happy with the fit of your boots and socks. Bring liquids and a packed lunch. Even if the write up suggests a convenient pub stop, please do not take this for granted. Pubs have been known to be full or even closed. A Spice ramble is not a race. The leader's responsibility is to ensure the safety of all the party, so he will often have to spend time at the back of the group. All walkers should ensure that they do not lose contact with the leader. If you can't see the leader, please stop and wait. (Neither Spice nor the walk leaders can be held responsible if a walker sustains an injury whilst out of touch with the leader.) Please be ready on time. There will be over 20 walkers taking part in a typical Spice ramble. The time specified in the newsletter is the Start time. If you are not ready to start walking promptly, you will be inconveniencing all those who had the foresight to get ready on time. Some rambles give a postcode near to the meet point; these are given for guidance only and members should not rely on SatNav systems to find the precise meet point for a walk. Always take the printed directions and a map with you. Please remember that Spice cannot be held responsible for the security of the car parking. Please ensure that you take sensible precautions to protect your car and belongings. Well behaved dogs are welcome on most walks unless otherwise stated, but must be pre-booked - please write it on your booking form or in the notes when booking online if you are bringing dogs. It is the owner's responsibility to ensure that the dog is kept under control on a fixed lead with a length of no more than two metres at all times, and is not allowed to cause a nuisance. You must bring a suitable lead and use it. Dogs must not be allowed off the lead at any time.

Facebook We have a Facebook group for our walkers and walk leaders to share News, Photos, Gossip, Events and all things ‘walk’ related. Please follow the link below & join if you are one of our many, many walkers! http://www.facebook.com/groups/SpiceYorkshireWalkers

After a break for lunch, we move on to Carlswark Cavern, one of the most fun and best-known caves in the Peak District. Ever since it was first run in 1960, the John Smith’s Cup has had a story to tell; 2014 saw Andrea Atzeni claim success for the second year running this time with Farraaj who produced a terrific weightcarrying performance for trainer Roger Varian. Who will land the six figure prize and unique Wedgwood trophy this year? The support of the Tadcaster brewer makes this the longest running sponsorship on the flat anywhere in the world and the event is one of Yorkshire’s finest. Gates Open: 11:15. We'll meet at 1pm. First Race: 1:40pm, Last Race: 5:10pm. Afterwards the Monotones will be playing in the bandstand. There are seven races scheduled.

Rock Climbing for the Terrified

Many members would love to do an abseil, but are too petrified to book the ones we normally offer. After seeing Mark Fenton's ability to gently coax even the most frightened, or physically disadvantaged people into achieving brilliant outdoor feats, I started these special sessions which have proved extremely popular! You just need to bring a little faith, and the will to succeed! The feeling you’ll get from your success is well worth it all.

Beginners Surfing Lesson Catch some waves dude!!

Date: Place: Meet: Cost: Host:

Saturday 25th July from 1pm to 3:30pm Scarborough # (YO11 2HD) Spa Complex £29 Member, £32 Guest Steve Crawford on 07891 094976

Today we are guest of Fluid Concept as we try a Beginner surf lesson. This lesson is aimed at first timers. We'll teach you basic water and beach safety, how to carry and use your surfboard safely, paddling your board and catching a wave, a good warm up routine and of course how to stand on your board (easier said than done). The lessons we offer at the surf school are all 2 hours long but we ask you to arrive about 30 minutes before your lesson starts so you have time to change and pick up your equipment. After the lesson we set aside some time for a chat and feedback or on any surf related subject you like. We have changing facilities at the shop and a nice hot kettle for the essential post surf cuppa, but please note there are no showers. Surfing is a fantastic sport and with a bit of persistence quite easy to learn. All you need is a reasonably good sense of balance and be able to swim 50 metres in a pool. Lessons include all tuition, relevant equipment and a nice hot drink afterwards. We use 5/4 wetsuits (winter), boots, gloves and hat (optional) for the lessons. All you need to bring is a swimming costume, a towel and some warm clothes.

This day is an ideal introduction in an interesting cave system, but one where you have the peace of mind of knowing that you could quickly be brought to the surface if the experience proves too much! So if you've always been a bit wary of taking your first trip underground then this is the event for you. Grade: Easy 24

RUN Are you ready to come face to face with your own extinction? Understand that at every moment you are being hunted; by zombies, by police, by warlords. The last children on earth need your help, will you save them? Starting from your resistance movement Asylum, you are issued with a map and the address of the first location you must reach, somewhere deep in an infected slum. Each location will immerse you further into the world of 2.8 Hours Later, where nothing is quite as it seems, as the murky world of police and criminality blurs into a den of iniquity. The game ends with a Zombie Disco!

The Mousetrap is famous around the world for being the longest running show of any kind in the history of British theatre - with over 25,000 performances it’s a play to be proud of. The scene is set when a group of people gathered in a country house cut off by the snow discover, to their horror, that there is a murderer in their midst. Who can it be? One by one the suspicious characters reveal their sordid pasts until at the last, nerveshredding moment the identity and the motive are finally revealed. Please book now so we can confirm tickets. We have seats in the stalls for this performance. Cancellations: Please note that we cannot offer refunds on theatre tickets unless we are able to resell your place.

Lots of you have enjoyed Zipworld’s ultimate Zipline at Bethesda, so when we heard that they were opening a new and different zipwire plus a unique series of underground trampolines at their Blaenau Ffestiniog site we thought “we’ll ‘ave some a that!”. Our first group had a great time, so we’ve booked it again! Our Day comprises 2 parts and with a break between each activity when we can grab some refreshments at the cafe, so expect to be on site for around 4 – 5 hours: ● Titan Zipline (12noon for slots departing at 12.20pm): The newest Zipworld Zipline, line riders fly high over Moor, Mountain and Mine on the world’s longest Zipline course. We will be taken by vehicle to the start of the first zip line – the longest of the three at 890m and 450m above sea level. There is a short and scenic walk between the end and start of the next two zip lines, which are 630m and 450m respectively. Each stretch has 4 parallel cables so we descend in teams of 4. ● The Bounce Below (2.50pm for 3pm start): This new attraction gives us the chance to bounce on huge trampolines suspended underground! The trampolines are hung in a cavern twice the size of St Paul's Cathedral and are accompanied by a huge light show! We’ll be given overalls and helmet and use a train to travel inside the mountain for the one-hour experience. The trampolines are reached by train, with each linked by a 60ft long slide. The event should all be finished by around 4.30pm

Saturday 22nd August 2015 at 10:30am Hayfield, High Peak, Derbyshire (SK22 2ES) £16 Member, £18 Guest Jeremy Sainter on 07974 967209

The ride starts and finishes with a short section of the Sett Valley trail but after that it’s all up and down, taking in Chinley Churn, Mount Famine and Lantern Pike. This is a great ride that literally circles Hayfield - you will never be more than a few miles from the village but don’t be fooled this is a tough ride and you will certainly know you have done it. This ride is not for beginners to mountain biking and we very strongly recommend at least attendance on a Spice “Come & Try” Mountain Bike Day BEFORE attempting this one. Bike hire: Sorry, but there is no bike hire available on this ride.

Horse Drawn Narrow Boat Trip ...experience how life was in the canal era

Date: Place: Cost: Host:

Sunday 30th August 2015 at 10:30am Cromford Wharf, Derbyshire (DE4 3RQ) £14.50 Member, £15.50 Guest Spice East Midlands

Here is a unique event – a two hour trip on the Cromford Canal on a horse drawn narrow boat which includes a commentary. We thought we would go for the horse drawn trip rather than a motorised trip as for a bit extra it’s much more special. A licensed boat master is in charge assisted by trained crew members. The trip starts at Cromford Wharf and takes us slowly to High Peak Junction and then to Lea Wood Pumphouse, which has the added bonus of being in steam that day. After having a look at the Pumphouse our horse will slowly take us back to Cromford Wharf where we can have lunch or tea and cakes at the café.

Come and join us on this Bank Holiday Sunday for a leisurely stroll along the side of the river. We will walk for about an hour and a half and then return to the City Centre for an afternoon tea at the Cosmopolitan Hotel on Lower Briggate. A glass of bubbly accompanies a traditional spread of afternoon tea, made up of a selection of finger sandwiches and homemade scones. Pastries and cakes will also be served up alongside a choice of traditional English tea, such as English breakfast, Darjeeling, green or fruit tea.

Charming old lady, Mrs Wilberforce, lives alone in her house in London, until she is visited by a gang of criminal misfits who are planning a major robbery. Posing as amateur musicians, the villains rent rooms in Mrs Wilberforce's house and plot to involve her, unwittingly, in the brilliantly conceived heist. Whilst it takes the idea of the classic 1955 Ealing film comedy, author Graham Linehan has reinvented it in his own unique and incredibly funny style. Please book early for theatre visits as we can't hold seats for long. We have stalls tickets in rows F and G for this performance. Please note that we cannot offer any refund on theatre tickets unless we are able to resell them.

After a short ride along the trail to get our legs spinning we will head up and over Longstone Edge to Eyam. We then meander along tracks and lanes to Tideswell where we will stop for a bite of lunch. But don’t worry there is still plenty of riding to be done as we head to Millers Dale and the beautiful Wye Valley. If you go down there has to be an up; so we climb to King Sterndale to follow the Priest’s way and the beautiful Horseshoe Dale. We then ride to Priestfield for the final 10 km off road section back to Hassop station and a well-earned cake and a cuppa in the cafe. A great day out in some of the most beautiful and scenic areas of the Peaks, with the added bonus of some great mountain biking. McLaren MP4-12C Thrill

Tank Battle Experience

.. drive this supercar

.. challenge your fellow teams to a tank paintball battle!

Date: Saturday 12th September 2015 at 8am Place: Prestwold Driving Centre, Loughborough (LE12 5SQ) Cost: £125 Member, £135 Guest

Date: Place: Time: Cost:

The McLaren MP4-12C is a sports car designed and manufactured by McLaren Automotive. It is the first production car wholly designed and built by McLaren since the McLaren F1. It’s the current (at time of writing) holder of the Top Gear fastest lap time. This spectacular speed machine is capable of accelerating from 0-60mph in just 3.3 seconds and boasts a top speed of 207mph and is manufactured by the F1 specialists here in the UK, not Italy.

This event has had great feedback. We have booked 4 tanks, each of which take a crew of 3 Spice members who will be with their tank throughout (so no waiting around on this one!) We start with a practice session, where we put the tank through its paces on the 1 mile track and firing range. We will alternate the 3 positions in the tank so that each person gets a chance to drive, a chance to load the gun and a chance to fire. The gun is adapted to fire paintball ammunition, and can be fired with the hatch up or down. In battle, of course the hatch has to be down and aimed by periscope. After the practice, the four tanks will do battle, with each tank attempting to out manoeuvre and “knock out” the others with their huge, paintball firing guns. For this part, teams will not be able to switch positions, so you will need to decide between you or toss a coin to decide who will drive, who will load and who will fire.

UK and Overseas Breaks Sailing Weekend around the Solent Dates: Fri 17th Jul 2015 - Sun 19th Jul 2015 Fri 14th Sep Sun - 16th Sep 2015 Place: Haslar marina, Gosport # (PO12 1NU) Cost: £238 Member, £258 Guest EnCompass is renowned for its ability to create enjoyable sailing experiences. Your skipper is an experienced Yachtmaster who is used to ensuring that you get the experience you are looking for. If you are new to sailing you will be amazed at how quickly you are able to ‘learn the ropes’. If you are a more experienced sailor you will find that your skills are acknowledged and then opportunities are created for you to step into tasks that extend you slightly where you need stretching (if that is what you want). We usually manage to cover the whole Solent during the course of the weekend, and there are excellent eating places at all the overnight stops. Cruises start from and return to Gosport. Whatever the weather – whether the winds have been strong or light; whether it has been foggy or clear; warm or cold; previous crews have had highly enjoyable weekends, with many people returning time and again. The boat is a Dehler 39. She is a cruiser/racer – comfortable, forgiving, and fast. Cost includes diesel, wet weather gear, life harnesses, breakfasts, lunches and teas. Marina charges are not included and are shared between the group. Nor are evening meals which we take ashore in one or more of the many excellent eateries.

The format will be the same as previous years; there will be a programme of coordinated activities throughout the weekend and you have the flexibility of doing them all or dipping in and out as you please. The weekend is run by Steve Dell who many of you will know from his Rambles, Treasure Hunts, Social and Walking weekends etc and has been developed to explore the many sites and attractions of London. The timing will coincide with the opening of Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament to the public. We stay in a central London Hotel so you won’t need your car. The whole weekend is achievable using the tube so it’s easier getting the train or coach to London then the underground will cater for our needs. The weekend is designed to be flexible and relaxed - over the weekend there will be several coordinated activities and visits to London’s attractions (see below). You can either do all of these activities or dip in and out as you please, you may want to go to other attractions in smaller groups or you may want to do some shopping! We will have the option a group meal each night. Arriving on the Friday: There will be an afternoon activity / attraction visit for those who can get there by around 2pm. These are the attractions that are likely to form the coordinated itinerary…  Monopoly pub crawl and evening meal (Friday evening)  Houses of Parliament  Thames River Cruise  Buckingham Palace  Ice Bar  London Eye (possibly an evening flight)  Tea at the Ritz  Duck Tour  The Shard When these are finalised they will be added as events on the website for you to book and the itinerary will be added to this write up. Keep up to date! Most of our big events are announced first on our fan page on Facebook®. Log in to Facebook and search for Spice Yorkshire, or go directly to facebook.com/SpiceYorkshire and Like our page. It’s the best way to be in the know! 38

Date: Sun 31st Jan 2016 - Sun 7th Feb 2016 Place: Meribel Mottaret, France Cost: £799 Member Twin Share pp, £939 Member Sole Occupancy (Deposit £150) (brochure price £920.00) Ski carriage: £30 Includes: Flights, Manchester flight supplement, transfers, chalet hotel accommodation , 7 breakfasts, 6 evening meals including complimentary wine, 6 days afternoon tea and coffee with a selection of cakes. Extras: Insurance, drinks, some meals, optional extras, ski Requirements, Lift Pass. Host: Lauren 07852 366055 Spread your wings and explore the three Valleys. The chalet hotel Tarentaise is an ideal base for skiers who enjoy plenty of variety. Intermediates especially will thrive on the 600kms of well-kept pistes; you can ski all week and still leave plenty of runs untouched. In the two villages and higher up, beginners can cut their teeth on a wealth of uncrowded nursery slopes. Experts can tackle the infamous Courchevel couloirs and the Chanrossa bumps. If the weather closes in, forest runs down the valley are the answer, while in sunny conditions Val Thorens, Europe's highest resort, is the place to head for. Meribel is one of the more lively alpine resorts for après ski and Mottaret a little more reserved, but it has a good choice of bars and restaurants including Le Rastro which is always a good buzz. Meribel is easily reached from Mottaret by the free resort bus service. Skiing in Meribel offers something for everyone. With an unrivalled amount of skiing and boarding (600km), the Trois Vallées is a magnificent ski area. From the main lift station you can climb either side of the valley by gondola and find yourself either at Saulire admiring the view down to Courchevel, or at La Tougnete with its access to Val Thorens and Les Menuires. For the advanced skier, the area’s blacks and off-piste will need little introduction, but do try the black from the top of the Roc de Tougne and the pistes around La Caron which will test you to the full. Runs through attractive woods lead to Méribel Village from where a chairlift returns you to the Altiport area. Snowboarding in Meribel is excellent across the whole Trois Valleés ski area. Apres-ski in Meribel centres on bars such as Les Enfants Terribles (Funky 70s), Dicks T-bar and La Taverne in Méribel, plus the Britishrun Plein Soleil bar/restaurant and Rastros Bar in Mottaret. Other good restaurants include the friendly Le Refuge and the more expensive Chez Kiki. For dancing the night away try Le Loft in the ice rink complex. The Olympic Centre hosts top-level ice hockey matches and has a swimming pool, climbing wall and bowling alley. New to the Centre this winter will be a gym, saunas, Jacuzzis, massage and relaxation rooms. Tucked right on the edge of the piste with dazzling views of the mountains beyond, the Chalet Hotel Tarentaise is located in the heart of the Three Valleys, offering you some of the very best skiing and boarding available in a truly stunning setting. Its central location gives you easy access to the Three Valley network of over 600km of pistes with the added advantage of ski-in ski out. And if you’re feeling in need of some pampering, all you need to do is pop into our sauna or beauty salon on the lower ground floor.

Chill out with Spice! By Ian Purvis

Who doesn’t enjoy getting away from it all and putting your feet up‌grab a good book and let the sun slowly bake you, or get out and explore some local culture, even a spot of shopping never goes amiss!

Well here at Spice this is what we call a Chill out – do as much (or as little) as you like and whether you want to be on your own or right in the middle of the action or even jump between the two there’s always the chance for you to do what you want – after all it is your holiday! We know that your holiday is your chance to get away from it all and recharge your battery – after all you deserve it! Whether your chosen method for this is to sleep late and party hard or take it easy and relax by a pool sipping your chosen beverage you can do it all with Spice and what’s more you get to do it amongst friends. Our Chill out breaks have proven to be extremely popular since their inception over 10 years ago. Back then the tendency was for not so much a Chill out than a blow out with many members coming back in need of another holiday (but for all the right reasons!). Don’t get us wrong there’s still plenty of opportunity for everyone to get into mischief (the older we all get the less wise we all seem!) but many of you also want to make the most of the areas you are visiting, getting out and about to explore. This year our Chill outs are destined for 4 different countries – Spain, Portugal, Italy and Turkey. Our 5* Amazing Algarve Chill out at the start of June has just returned – this was a brand new destination for 2015 staying in a superb 5* hotel just outside Faro and the feedback so far has been excellent, plus with prices starting from just £599 half board it was really well received with over 30 Spicers enjoying a bit of early summer sun with temperature around 30 every day! The next one after that is not until September when we have our Turkish Gulet Cruise Chill out and you don’t get much more laid back than this one. After 7 days relaxing on a traditional Turkish gulet with all your meals included and cooked on board by the resident chef you’ll be that chilled out you might even forget how to write!

Our second Chill out in September is again to Turkey but this time we are on the mainland and we visit Orkatenk, a small town outside of Bodrum and we have been going there since 2007. It’s ever so popular and our groups vary for around 30 to 70 – there are water sports available too so it’s a great all round destination for you to relax in. September is a great time for a Chill out as the temperatures are still warm (usually anyway but not even Spice can make any promises on that front!), the kids are back in school and flight prices have started to drop a little. That’s why we have yet another Chill out, this time to Spain to the small town of Calpe just north of Benidorm. We have a lovely 4* hotel awaiting you with a gorgeous pool and spa, the town has a great beach and plenty of local bars for you to let your hair down in. And finally, for this year anyway, we have our extremely popular Lake Garda Autumn Chill out which we have run for the last 5 years. Lake Garda is a truly wonderful destination with so much to offer and places to explore – just hop on one of the ferry’s and you can have days exploring North and South of the Lake, plus Verona and at a push Venice (although it’s a very long day!) can be reached in a day’s excursion. Maybe this trip is so popular because it’s only 6 days so doesn’t use too much holiday or maybe its the free bar on 4 nights that makes it so popular (hmmm I wonder!) but the trip this year only has a few places left and we have an entire hotel exclusively for Spice! We are just starting to plan for next year but we are hoping to add some new destinations such as Cyprus and Croatia and I’m sure we will be repeating some of the successful ones from this year!

As at 15th June 2015

TURKEY COAST CRUISE 8 days, Mon 14 September 2015 from £775 Flights from London Gatwick & Manchester Sailing from Marmaris in the clear turquoise waters of the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas you will discover the delights of the Turkish Coast. Calpe’s two main beaches, the Cantal Roig and the Playa Arenal, are renowned for their long stretches of fine sand and clear waters, perfect for swimming and also popular with surfers. The port comes alive in the afternoon as the daily catch makes its way inland and diners are invited to sample the fresh local seafood for dinner in one of the many restaurants surrounding the harbour.

CUBA – SUN & FUN VALENCIA & LA TOMATINA FESTIVAL 5 days, Mon 24 Aug 2015 from £649 Departs London Gatwick, Liverpool & Edinburgh La Tomatina also known as The Tomato Festival! Most of us have of it but how about being part of it… Every year in the small Spanish town of Buñol the streets are taken over with this amazing spectacle and run red (literally) with rivers of tomato juice! But what’s it all about - La Tomatina is basically a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Buñol near to Valencia in Spain. Thousands of people make their way from all corners of the world to fight in this ‘World’s Biggest Food Fight’ where more than one hundred metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets. Prior to 2013 anywhere from 40,000 to 50,000 (reported to be 50,000 in 2012) people crammed into this huge tomato fight, greatly expanding Bunol’s normal 9,000 person population. However, since the 2013 event official ticketing was put into place limiting the number of participants to just 20,000 lucky people and you could be one! Our trip to the festival is a little more civilised however and we have included 4 nights’ accommodation in the historic city of Valencia to make this a truly wonderful breakaway with a difference.

12 days, Thu 22 October 2015 from £1749 Departs London Gatwick direct Join us on a wonderful Caribbean break to the historic island of Cuba! Get away from it all this autumn and enjoy some fun in the Caribbean sun with Spice! This 11-night break to the Caribbean’s largest island, famed for its rum, salsa, vibrant culture and stunning beaches will be amazing. Spend a few days in the happening capital Havana and immerse yourself in decades of history intertwined with a hot salsa beat and plenty of rum cocktails before transferring to quieter Varadero for 7 nights’ All Inclusive relaxation on the beach.
