SUMMER 2016

So I don’t know about you but where have the last 6 months gone?

Dianne Livingstone Spice London

This year is flying by and along with organising a fantastic Center Parcs a couple of weeks ago your coordinators are busy not only with their own full event programme but also our big celebration at the end of the year – Spice’s 35th Anniversary Ball. We are just finalising some of the extra surprises to keep you all amused over the evening and weekend and we will shortly be announcing the menu plus not just one but TWO live bands!!! Keep an eye on your local and Spice UK’s Facebook groups. It is almost full now but you may be able to grab one of the final few rooms and tickets and if not get on the waitlist – you just never know…

Richard Coulter Spice West Midlands

Of course we have Center Parcs and we have had a ball - but you will get full coverage in the next newsletter. The party night theme was ‘Heroes and Villains’ and you surpassed yourself! We have had costumes from Disney Lauren Fawkes Spice Manchster & Yorkshire

Jamie Morris Spice Scotland

Cruella Devill, Hollywood - John Wayne and every Superhero you can think of, to real life heroes like Gandhi! The Dastardly Challenge was a real success and we had comedy carnage with Hungry Hippos using members as the hippos! If you haven’t seen the video it is worth taking a look on the Spice UK Facebook page. Over the coming pages you’ll find details of next seasons skiing all of which should now be available to book via Spice UK. We also have a feature on some of the weekend events that Spice has laid on over the rest of the year both in the UK and overseas including Dragon Boating, Edinburgh Festival, Potters, Sailing and European city breaks. Whatever your interests the Spice programme keeps delivering and I hope to see as many of you as possible over the summer. So get booking and give yourself something’s to look forward to over the next few months.

Name: Nicola Fox Group: West Midlands.

Name: Caroline Cavell Group: Scotland

How long have you been a Spice member? 2 and a half years

Name: Mike Taylor

How long have you been a Spice Member? Over ten years with a break in the middle! Why did you join Spice? To have fun and to meet lovely people who liked doing things that were just that little bit different. It all came true! Bonus was meeting my partner through Spice two years ago; and yes we know it’s not a dating agency!

Why did you join Spice? I moved back to Scotland after being away all my adult life and wanted to make new friends and get out and about

Group: Spice Manchester

What has been your favourite event? Weekends are my favourite - Pitlochry, Ballachulish

What has been your most challenging event? Taking up badminton.

What has been your most challenging event? Quad biking - but not for the reason you think!

What is your funniest memory in Spice? The Cocktail making class on the Christmas break, great fun.

Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday? Yes to Istanbul and it was brilliant! Share a room - you’ll really get to know someone and could end up with a friend for life!

What would be your advice for a new member? Don’t be shy, give it a try. You’ll meet some lovely people.

Have you had an embarrassing Spice moment? Not yet but I don’t embarrass that easily and there’s still time!

What is your funniest memory in Spice? Sharing a room (with now a very good friend) and both waking up in the middle of the night giggling and we can’t remember why? What would be your advice for a new member? Go for it, everybody is so nice and enjoy just being themselves. Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday? Yes - Iceland, amazing experience and well organised

How long have you been a Spice member? 18 Months Why did you join Spice? I joined Spice to meet new people out of my own work environment and to try out new activities.

What has been your favourite event? I absolutely loved the Christmas break in Lincoln.

Have you had an embarrassing Spice moment? I arrived for a Walk and was a bit upset that there was no-one there, only to realise I was half an hour early. Still, managed to get a glass of wine before setting off. What is your life philosophy in one sentence? We’re only here once, live your dream. Don’t get to an old age with regrets. Four people (alive or dead) you’d invite to your dream dinner party? Elvis Presley, Winston Churchill, My Mum and Al Pacino. Your favourite movie? As Good As It Gets Most treasured belonging? My Fender Stratocaster Guitar

What has been your favourite event? So far, Dragon Boat Racing of course What would be your advice for a new member? Put a smile on your face, go armed with the question: ‘What Spice events do you think I should try?’ as an ice breaker ... and go to things that really ring your bell!

What is your life philosophy in one sentence. ‘Live and love each day as if it’s your last and always be kind’ Four people (alive or dead) you’d invite to your dream dinner party? David Attenborough because he’s my kind of legend, Dawn French to make us all laugh, Henry 8th for the stories (but the younger version and only if he’d recently had a bath) and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall because I don’t cook and he’s nice and does organic! Your favourite movie? Oh the pressure to choose one! If I have to it’s ‘Notting Hill’ ...sweet and good music. Legends of the Fall needs a mention too! Most treasured belonging? My photographs, they are testimony to a life well lived and the people who have mattered.

Ski with Spice The Spice ski season has been launched and we are visiting the 3 Valleys, Alpe d’Huez, Soldeu, Courchevel, St. Christoph, Meribel, La Plagne, Cervinia, Arraba and Chamonix - all destinations across France, Austria, Andorra and Italy. What a packed Ski season! It looks like you are going to have a lot of fun.... So we took over 400 members away last season and we have our photos and memories to look back on. What are your stories? What’s your favourite memory? We have loved all the photos that have been shared and liked on Facebook. There is a very active Spice Facebook group for Skiers (Search on “Spice Ski UK Group”) which is a fun way to break the ice and keep in touch with your ski pals. And if you are thinking of joining us this season – watch out for those early booking discounts, to get the best prices.

Coordinator’s Corner Welcome to our Summer 2016 newsletter, bringing you lots of opportunities to take part in fun and friendly events & activities to pack your summer months full of. We have lots of old favourites along with a few newbies for you to try out. Of course the summer months are when we make the most of our English weather and there are lots of opportunities to socialise & be active outdoors with Outdoor Theatre events, Water sports, Walking, Via Ferrata, Race Days, The Sheepdog Experience, Go-Ape and many more. Amongst the new events includes the fabulous Gauntlet Games in North Manchester where we will be entering a combined Yorkshire & Manchester Team (page 31). Think a 5K run/walk combined with It’s a Knockout! Don’t worry if you aren’t very fit, there is plenty of time to get a bit fitter and it promises to be great fun. We hope to see you out and about on the events over the summer months and of course we hope you can join us at our 35th Anniversary Ball in Leeds on the 1st October – places are limited & we are almost sold out but don’t hesitate to add yourself to the waitlist and we will try our very best to get you on to the party of the year. We have also got various additional events on the weekend from meals to a treasure hunt, a Charleston dance workshop and a city walk (page 36). However you don’t need to wait until then for a party, as we have our Spice Yorkshire Summer Party taking place in Sheffield on the 13th August. It promises to be a lovely evening of dancing and partying and we hope to see you there. See page 27 for full details. Looking further ahead, the Spice Yorkshire & Manchester Ski trip (page 40) is now available to book – we are excited to be off to Champoluc in Italy - a new destination for us. Spice West Midlands went to the same hotel this season and have been extolling its virtues, from it being a fabulous hotel to the very quiet almost private slopes. We are already over half full on this so don’t leave it too long before making a decision. Wishing you lots of sunshine!!! Lauren

Welcome to new members You’ve taken the first steps and joined Spice; the next step is to come along to your first event. We know this can be a daunting prospect when you don’t know anyone else in the group but there’s no need to be apprehensive, Spice are a friendly bunch. Most of us come along on our own to events so we’re all well used to meeting and welcoming new people. A great way of getting into Spice is by booking your first events right away and getting your first event “under your belt”. Even better is to try a weekend away and get to know a smaller group of people really well. If you’ve not been to a Spice Preview Night we hold them every month (see page 13 for dates) so do make an effort to come to one of these, and please next time we are on an event, come up and say hello so we can put a face to the name! If you have any queries at all, please give us a call in the office and we will always do our utmost to help you.

Contact us The Spice office is open from 10am until 6pm Monday to Friday except on public holidays. Spice Preview Nights in Leeds, Sheffield and York… Our Preview Nights are a great way to make your start with SPICE and the easiest way of meeting a few new people and finding out how it all works. We also run a free raffle for all who attend (existing members too) with events as the prizes – just to add a touch of Spice to the evening. The plan is to welcome everyone, talk through the basics of Spice, and give you more info on the coming programme and an opportunity to book on events if you like. You can of course book in the usual ways (phone, web, or post - but remember the Spice motto – “You snooze, you lose – you rest, you rust!” Jonathan and enthusiastic volunteers will be on hand to answer any queries you may have and there may be an opportunity to watch the Spice DVD. Remember, everyone who attends is in the same boat so don’t be nervous about attending, come on your own (lots of people do) or come with a friend. Call us to book in advance or just turn up - either way, do come and see what you’ve been missing!!

Leeds

Sheffield

York

Dates: Tuesday 12th July Tuesday 13th September Place: Brooklyn Bar, 50 Call Lane, Leeds (LS1 6DT)

Dates: Tuesday 9th August Wednesday 5th October Place: The Old Queens Head, 40 Pond Hill, Sheffield (S1 2BG)

Date:

Tuesday 26th July

Brooklyn Bar is on Call Lane, between the entrance to Queens Court and the railway bridge. Disabled access is through the side entrance from Queens Court. The nearest outdoor parking is opposite the Adelphi pub unless you get very lucky and get a space just outside the venue. Indoor car parking is in the Trinity Leeds Car Park behind Chaophraya or in the Q-Park Criterion Place upstairs from Bibis Italianissimo. Why not get a drink from the bar downstairs and then join us upstairs?

The Old Queens Head is right alongside Sheffield Bus station and adjacent to Ponds Forge International Sports Centre on Pond Hill. The nearest tram stop is Fitzalan Square / Ponds Forge just a 5 minute walk away. The railway station is a 10 minute walk. There is some street parking on Pond Hill and more on Pond Street, or you can use the car park at Ponds Forge or the Castle Gate Q-Park next to the Travelodge. We meet in the area to the right as you enter through the main door from Pond Hill.

The Royal Oak is at the Monk Bar end of Goodramgate. There is no parking along Goodramgate so use one of the car parks just outside of the walled shopping centre. We meet in the upstairs function room which is through the inner door and then up the stairs on your right. Why not get a drink from the bar downstairs when you arrive and then join us upstairs?

Place: The Royal Oak, 18 Goodramgate, York (YO1 7LG)

For all locations we meet from 7:45pm. Please try to be there by 8pm for the talk.

Look out also for our Easy and Evening Rambles for a gentle introduction to walking – walks are a great way of meeting a few people.

Rambles - Grading System

Spice Rambles Rambles: Essential Information All Spice walks are designed to be fun, enjoyable, and above all, safe. All the walk leaders we use are experienced and carry first aid and emergency equipment but all walkers must ensure that they are properly equipped for the conditions. If you are a newcomer to Spice Rambles, please feel free to contact the walk leaders through the Spice Office. The leaders will be happy to discuss the appropriate type of clothing and equipment for use on Spice walks but here are a few general points to bear in mind. No jeans or trainers, please. Any Spice Ramble of Grade 3 or harder may involve walking over open country, not necessarily over welldefined paths, and it should not be assumed that you are going for a stroll in the park. You should wear warm clothing, preferably in the form of several layers, and all walkers must bring waterproof jackets and trousers. Happily, accidents and injuries are extremely rare but "injuries" are often caused by ill-fitting boots or inappropriate socks. A relatively minor injury out in the wilds can result in the walk being curtailed, so please ensure that you are happy with the fit of your boots and socks. Bring liquids and a packed lunch. Even if the write up suggests a convenient pub stop, please do not take this for granted. Pubs have been known to be full or even closed. A Spice ramble is not a race. The leader's responsibility is to ensure the safety of all the party, so he will often have to spend time at the back of the group. All walkers should ensure that they do not lose contact with the leader. If you can't see the leader, please stop and wait. (Neither Spice nor the walk leaders can be held responsible if a walker sustains an injury whilst out of touch with the leader.) Please be ready on time. There will be over 20 walkers taking part in a typical Spice ramble. The time specified in the newsletter is the Start time. If you are not ready to start walking promptly, you will be inconveniencing all those who had the foresight to get ready on time. Some rambles give a postcode near to the meet point; these are given for guidance only and members should not rely on Satnav systems to find the precise meet point for a walk. Always take the printed directions and a map with you. Please remember that Spice cannot be held responsible for the security of the car parking. Please ensure that you take sensible precautions to protect your car and belongings. Well behaved dogs are welcome on most walks unless otherwise stated, but must be pre-booked - please write it on your booking form or in the notes when booking online if you are bringing dogs. It is the owner's responsibility to ensure that the dog is kept under control on a fixed lead with a length of no more than two metres at all times, and is not allowed to cause a nuisance. You must bring a suitable lead and use it. Dogs must not be allowed off the lead at any time unless agreed with the walk leader after consultation with the other walkers.

Facebook We have a Facebook group for our walkers and walk leaders to share News, Photos, Gossip, Events and all things ‘walk’ related. Please follow the link below & join if you are one of our many, many walkers! www.facebook.com/groups/SpiceYorkshireWalkers

Tank Battle Experience .. challenge your fellow teams to a tank paintball battle!

Dates: Sunday 10th July Sunday 25th September Place: Lutterworth, Leicestershire # (LE17 6NW) Time: 1:30pm to 4pm Cost: £95 Member, £99 Guest We have booked 4 tanks, each of which take a crew of 3 Spice members who will be with their tank throughout. We start with a practice session, where we put the tank through its paces on the 1 mile track and firing range. We will alternate the 3 positions in the tank so that each person gets a chance to drive, a chance to load the gun and a chance to fire. The gun is adapted to fire paintball ammunition, and can be fired with the hatch up or down. In battle, of course the hatch has to be down and aimed by periscope. After the practice, the four tanks will do battle, with each tank attempting to out manoeuvre and “knock out” the others with their huge, paintball firing guns. For this part, teams will not be able to switch positions, so you will need to decide between you or toss a coin to decide who will drive, who will load and who will fire.

They were first built for soldiers to climbing to access vantage points in the mountains of Europe during the war. Put yourself to the test on this challenging activity at How Stean Gorge. Wearing climbing safety harness and helmet you will start your Ultimate Via Ferrata adventure on the practice route. Here you will learn how the ‘buddy’ system enables you to work together with your fellow adventurers. Then it’s time to move onto the ‘real thing’ where your balance skills are tested. First, you cross the beam over the gushing water below. The next stage is to climb across the gorge walls using a network of metal cables. There are hot showers, changing facilities and a restaurant onsite so you can freshen up as soon as the activity is over!

A Big Day Out in the Peaks Date: Place: Meet: Cost: Host:

Sunday 14th August at 9:30am Central Peak District (DE45 1NW) P&D car park, Hassop Station, Bakewell £16 Member, £18 Guest Jeremy Sainter on 07974 967209

A Fabulous ride taking in some of the most beautiful hills and dales of the central peaks. This is a very popular ride; we will be starting from Hassop Station on the disused section of the main LondonManchester Midland Railway Line between Bakewell and Buxton which is now the Monsal Trail. After a short ride along the trail to get our legs spinning we will head up and over Longstone Edge to Eyam. We then meander along tracks and lanes to Tideswell where we will stop for a bite of lunch. But don’t worry there is still plenty of riding to be done as we head to Millers Dale and the beautiful Wye Valley. If you go down there has to be an up; so we climb to King Sterndale to follow the Priest’s way and the beautiful Horseshoe Dale. We then ride to Priestfield for the final 10 km off road section back to Hassop station and a well-earned cake and a cuppa in the cafe. Grade: 2; Distance: 28 miles on some of the central Peaks classic tracks and Trails.

The Sheepdog Experience TLC - Thinking Like Canines!!

Date: Place: Meet: Cost: Host:

Sunday 14th August from 11am to 1:30pm Mainline Collies, Baildon # (BD16 3AU) Golcar Farm, Spring Lane £69 Member, £75 Guest Vicki Sykes

A sheepdog is an intelligent thinking animal and is capable of making its own decisions when the line of duty calls for instant reaction to certain situations. Training a dog to work sheep requires not only skill and patience but also knowledge of the dog’s mind and of its basic instincts. Working a trained sheepdog requires a similar knowledge of the dog’s mind, for to work a pack dog the handler must first learn to think like a pack dog, TLC Think Like Canines. The Sheepdog Experience is not about rushing into a field and trying to move sheep from one area to another with a dog you hardly know and with no skill or feeling involved. It is about the skills involved, the history of the breed, the basic instincts, understanding the working mind of the collie and of learning to harmonise with it. The Sheepdog Experience gives you the opportunity to learn as much as possible about farming, sheep, Sheepdogs and trialling. You will also be surprised at how much you learn about communication and confidence and if you have a dog of your own you will pick up tips on training. Golcar farm is not a show farm, it is a working farm, our dogs are all working dogs and although they will try to make you work they will also make you laugh. Relax, learn and have fun with a bunch of cheeky happy collies. 28

Abseiling for the Terrified Dates: Saturday 20th August Saturday 24th September Place: Black Rocks, Matlock # Time: 10am Cost: £34 Member, £39 Guest Many members would love to do an abseil, but are too petrified to book the ones we normally offer. After seeing Mark Fenton's ability to gently coax even the most frightened, or physically disadvantaged people into achieving brilliant outdoor feats, I started these special sessions which have proved extremely popular! You just need to bring a little faith, and the will to succeed! The feeling you’ll get from your success is well worth it all. Mark will get you to overcome any fears by building up your confidence gradually. First we get used to the equipment and how to use it on a few very short descents, before tackling some bigger abseils if you feel able. You’ll not be forced to do anything you are uncomfortable with, or feel stupid if you back out of any stage. So go on…you’ve nothing to lose but your fears!

Mark Fenton, who runs our legendary “Abseiling for the Terrified” days with fantastic feedback and results. As usual, anyone can have a go, as you don't have to be superfit, and all equipment is provided. You are in safe hands with our excellent instructors who will encourage you yet promise not to put you in any situation that you are uncomfortable. Climbing brings out the child in all of us. It is an enormous sense of achievement to reach the top. If you lose your grip or have to give in, you can relax in the security that you're well secured by the belay team. If there is time, Mark will also let you have a go with the Micro ladders. These are the type used in caves (and by mountaineers on difficult expeditions). Learning the techniques is quite a giggle – find out why!

Now in his seventies and terminally ill, he has two final missions: to be reconciled to his long-abandoned son Michael and secretly to ensure he is not a burden to his younger, devoted and second wife Anna as he goes "into that good night". But when Michael arrives at the beautiful Tuscan villa for their first meeting in many years, Ralph wrecks all hope of reconciliation when he picks and loses a fight with Michael’s beautiful girlfriend, Debbie. Later, alone, Ralph receives 'The Visitor' whose services he has hired to provide a painless ending, as he goes into 'That Good Night'. Sunday 25th September at 11:45am Skipton Castle, Skipton (BD23 1AW) at the twin towers at top of Main Street £22 Member, £25 Guest Jonathan Banks on 07969 349714 and Jill Pearson on 07788 144778

Includes: admission to Skipton Castle, guided tour and afternoon tea Extras: additional refreshments Over 900 years old, Skipton Castle is one of the most complete and best preserved medieval castles in England and is well worth a visit at any season of the year. We'll meet outside at the twin towers of the Castle at the top of Main Street at 11:45am. Our guided tour will start at 12pm prompt and will last for approximately an hour and a half. Following this you'll have the chance to wander around and explore this lovely Castle before we meet at the Tearoom for afternoon tea at 2pm. Afterwards, if you wish, you'll have time to explore some more until the Castle closes at 6pm. Obviously the castle is very old and a lot of the stone floors are very uneven so we recommend you wear sensible flat footwear. Visitors can explore every corner of this impressive history-rich castle, which withstood a three-year siege during the Civil War. View the Banqueting Hall, the Kitchen, the Bedchamber and Privy. Climb from the depths of the Dungeon to the top storey of the Watch Tower. Imagine what life was like when Skipton Castle provided protection and security from invaders. Even now more historic finds are being discovered. Recently an ancient well was uncovered, helping to explain how the castle garrison survived the siege of 1643-5. Fully roofed and with an enchanting early Tudor courtyard the stout towers of the gatehouse only hint at the splendour which is revealed as the visitor enters the castle grounds. Facing the gatehouse there is a large tower, originally the watchtower - the most important feature of the castle's defences. To its left is the present entrance to the inner core of the stronghold. Skipton Castle - The Conduit Court and Lady Ann Clifford's Yew TreeMasons' marks can be seen in the stonework within the main entrance and the Conduit Court. Stonemasons would leave a carved initial or symbol to show which stones they had dressed so that they could be paid for their work. In medieval days visitors would have crossed a bridge over a moat and then passed under a portcullis and through the main doors before reaching the inner courtyard. Skipton Castle - The arms of John Clifford complete with wyverns half dragon, half sea serpent. The grooves of the portcullis and the opening for the drawbar of the great door can still be seen. Leading off the Conduit Court is the Banqueting Hall, the social centre of the Medieval castle, and where the Lord and Lady would have dined. The medieval kitchen would never have passed the scrutiny of today's public health inspectors; it would have been a crowded, hot and smelly place. The garderobe (privy) opens straight off the kitchen. Next to it was a chute which discharged kitchen waste into the stream below. Pipes made from elmwood brought water from outside, but if the castle was besieged and the pipeline cut off, the inhabitants had to rely on rainwater collected from the roof and channelled into a cistern beneath the Conduit Court.

Medieval Jousting

Balloon Flight

Date: Place: Time: Cost:

the altogether more civilised way to fly!

Sunday 25th September 2016 Warwick International, Guys Cliff # (CV34 5YD) 9:15am to 5pm £175 Member, £185 Guest

This is a unique opportunity to learn the ultimate medieval art, with The Knights of Middle England. Our day is run by Karl Ude-Martinez who has over 12 years of experience in performing live jousting shows all over Europe. For obvious safety reasons, we will not be allowed to actually hit each other with our jousts as death often results from that – and such bravery is not deemed culturally appropriate to the modern age! However, they use a quitaine (or dummy) to take the impact. On arrival you will be given a safety briefing and then your riding will be assessed. You will learn basic jousting skills such as hitting the quintaine and learn basic sword and staff fighting. Being a knight also involves being dressed in medieval costume. No real riding experience is needed, but would be an advantage. For safety reasons if the instructor on the day feels your riding is not strong enough for certain tasks, you will make it up in other activities. Reasonable fitness is required as you’ll be in the saddle for most of the day. Note: Unlike most Spice events, this is not a Spice exclusive but is shared with public bookings. Therefore, we cannot guarantee you will be with other Spice members.

Caving for the Terrified ..a great way to get started

Date: Saturday 1st October from 10am to 1:30pm Place: Matlock Bath, Matlock, Derbyshire # (DE4 3PG) Cost: £35 Member, £39 Guest Another of Mark's brilliant events that are aimed at those who really want to conquer a challenging outdoor pursuit, but feel the need for some extra 'loving care' and patience to help them meet their ambition. This day is an ideal introduction in an interesting cave system, but one where you have the peace of mind of knowing that you could quickly be brought to the surface if the experience proves too much! So if you've always been a bit wary of taking your first trip underground then this is the event for you. Grade: Easy

Date: Sunday 2nd October at 7am Place: Derbyshire or Shugborough Hall # Cost: £145 Member, £149 Guest This is one of those experiences of a lifetime! You'll never have an experience like ballooning. You arrive at the launch site...nothing is happening. A van arrives, towing a large 'shopping' basket. People gather in groups, look skywards muttering about clouds and met reports. Then suddenly it’s all action with people running everywhere as our balloonists decide we're going for it! Final checks are made, you hop in and are away, rising majestically, taking an eagles view of the fields and hills spread in a tapestry below. In experienced hands you'll enjoy a memorable flight, lasting 30-60 minutes before they bring you gently earthward. Please note: flights are weather dependent, so dates cannot be guaranteed. If you’re unable to fly on the date chosen, our supplier Wickers World will offer another date that is mutually convenient. Their special terms & conditions will be sent.

Bridge Abseil and Ladder Climb ..it'll scare you to death - but you'll love it!!

Date: Place: Cost: Host:

Sunday 2nd October at 10am Millers Dale # (SK17 8SN) £35 Member, £39 Guest Mark Fenton for Spice West Midlands

Ever fancied the idea of a freefall abseil (like the SAS do out of a helicopter!) from a precipitous 80' viaduct to the river bank below…and then climbing back up using a metal caving ladder which swings and sways! (saves having to walk all the way back to the top anyway). We thought you might, so we arranged a great day for you. Once you've plucked up the courage to do it once, there will be no stopping you. It's a great confidence booster and gives a real sense of achievement. This day is run by Mark Fenton (who many have written in praising and requesting more of) so you can be sure that there will be lots of fun, a relaxed atmosphere where absolute beginners will find lots of nurturing and encouragement and a total commitment to your safety at all stages. This is a brilliant first or second abseil experience. It is also an ideal training for anyone wishing to do our more advanced caving trips as you will be able to learn some of the techniques above ground rather than under!

If there’s ever been a more upbeat, fun, don’t-take-yourself seriously dance style, we’ve yet to find one. Don’t worry if you have two left feet, because Charleston is the style specifically designed for them! This is a high-energy, laugh-out-loud workshop, and we guarantee you’ll fall in love with the Charleston! Bring some water with you, because this is thirsty work. Smooth-soled shoes are recommended – they don’t have to be dance shoes, just ones with leather or plastic soles that slide easily. 36

Bring some ear plugs if your a light sleeper. We will be mucking in and cooking/organising breakfast on the Saturday and Sunday morning. On Friday evening you can eat on the way, bring something with you to cook or we can pop along to the local pub to eat (not included in price) which is a 10 minute walk away, whilst nibbles will be provided to keep you going throughout the weekend. The Top Brink public house is just a 10 minute walk from the hostel and is famed for its pub grub and we will try to secure a booking for the Saturday night for a group meal (again not included). These weekends are very much about throwing yourself in to the Spice Spirit and helping out where needed especially cleaning up after breakfast and before we depart on the Sunday morning. 40

Includes: 2 nights hotel accommodation, 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 evening meals, Professional Murder Mystery Organiser, Spy Thriller Quiz and Spice Host throughout the weekend This is a classic Spice weekend away for any budding Agatha Christie or Hercule Poirot’s amongst us. Our plot will have you guessing and working with your team to find out who dunnit! If you have joined us on one of these weekends before we have another BRAND NEW excellent plot! Plot: A Conspiracy.....To Die For This year there is a totally new plot - 'A Conspiracy...To Die For' - more of a Spy Thriller than a Murder Mystery for those James Bond fans. The nation is left in shock when new Prime Minister, left winger Jeff Christmas, is assassinated while opening Socialist Bookshop “Sassy Poll”. His revolutionary agenda, including turning Buckingham Place into a Homeless Shelter, is put on the back burner as a new election is organised. Meanwhile, in a quiet Peak District Village, a gathering of walkers expectantly await the climax of the ‘Muddy Boot Awards’ – little knowing that their lives would become intertwined with the death of their P.M. The assassin appears to have unfinished business.

MADRID MINI BREAK 4 days, Thursday 20 October 16 from £549 Departs London Gatwick, Manchester & Edinburgh Madrid is the capital of Spain and the thrid largest city in Europe after London and Berlin. It is a city of elegant boulevards and expansive, manicured parks such as the Buen Retiro. However while the city possesses modern infrastructure, it has preserved the look and feel of many of its historic neighbourhoods and streets. Madrid has really revamped itself in the past couple of years and the centre of the city is smartening up with new boutiques, delis, cafés and gastrobars opening up every week. It’s perfect for a culture-rich long weekend or city break, with great food and a lively atmosphere at night. Although it is cold in winter, there are usually a lot of bright, sunny days and it is often warm enough to sit outside during the day. Just remember your hat and gloves.

LISBON MINI BREAK 4 days, Thursday 17 November 16 from £499 Departs London Stanstead, London Heathrow, Bristol, Luton, Liverpool, & Edinburgh Lisbon is Portugal’s Capital and largest city – it is also one of the oldest cities in the world, and the oldest in Western Europe, predating other modern European capitals such as London, Paris and Rome by centuries. However unlike most capital cities, Lisbon’s status as the capital of Portugal has never been granted or confirmed officially – by statute or in written form. With all this history it is a wonderful place to visit and explore for a long weekend! Lisbon enjoys a Mediterranean climate. Among all the metropoleis in Europe, it has the warmest winters, with average temperatures 15 °C (59 °F) during the day and 8 °C (46 °F) at night from December to February discovering the city should be quite pleasant. We have a lot packed in to this weekend to help get the most from your time there but there is also time free for individual or group exploration!

VENICE BEFORE CHRISTMAS 4 days, Friday 16 December 16 from £549 Departs London Gatwick, Manchester & Luton The Venice is a unique city constantly fighting against the rising tides of the Mediterranean and its status as an island state throughout recent history has left it independent and passionate. The ‘must see’ sights in Venice are St. Mark’s Square and the 11th century Basilica, the Doges Palace and the famous Bridge of Sighs but to really discover the essence of Venice you need to set off and get yourself lost! Nothing beats a stroll through the backstreets taking in the architecture and the Venetians. This is a chance to get away from the chaos of Chrsitmas preparation and enjoy a short break in this beautiful city. Your itinerary is quite well packed but also always some time for individual or group exploration!

NICE CARNIVAL WEEKEND 4 days, Friday 17 February 2017 from £499 Departs London Gatwick & Liverpool Why not discover the South Coast of France with Spice in February 2017 and forget the dull winter days. We have repeated this break after great feedback this year and this is a short city break to Nice, including entry to its worldfamous annual Carnival. Nice Carnival dates back to 1294, when the Count of Provence Charles d’Anjou spent the “the joyous days of Carnival” in Nice. Over the centuries, the city of Nice has celebrated the end of Lent with masked balls, fancy dress, egg- and confetti-throwing, and most recently, parades of floats through the streets. Floats are decorated with beautiful flowers and fun characters such as His Majesty “Triboulet”, the rag puppet mascot who leads the festivities.

Date: Sun 10 Jul 2016 Time: 9:15am Location: Pershore, Worcestershire WR10 1AF Cost: £29 Member, £32 Guest Camping and party options available These are great days out - Enter the Dragon! Up to 16 people sitting side by side in a forty foot long boat, with a carved dragon’s head and tail attached. A drummer in the prow beating time, a helmsman in the stern keeping the boat on course with a giant paddle, the crew, 8 each side speeding the boat down the river to the finish line! The atmosphere is brilliant, which is why this is one of the essential events in the Spice calendar! The race is for fun with other Spice groups from all over the UK. We have our own trophies and medals to go for, and the races will be run on a timed basis over the day. Don’t worry if you’ve never been in a Dragon Boat or anything similar before, as we’ll have plenty of time to practice before the racing begins in earnest (and as this is Spice, it’s all just for fun anyway!).

As you will see we have many weekenders for the Spice family.

Highlighted Holidays LAKE GARDA AUTUMN CHILLOUT 6 days, Sunday 09 October 16 from £549 Departs London Stansted & Manchester

COSTA BLANCA CHILLOUT 8 days, Sunday 25 September 16 from £639 Departs London Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol & Glasgow Spain’s Costa Blanca, located on the central Eastern coastline, is a popular destination for tourists who arrive every summer to take advantage of the warm climate, sundrenched beaches, laid-back lifestyle and lively evening culture. Calpe is situated approximately 60km from Alicante airport. With around 13.000 inhabitants, this unassuming former fishing village has become a popular resort. A distinguishing feature of the town is the “Penon de Ifach”, an imposing rock which rises from the sea and creates a unique landscape for this coastal resort. Calpe’s two main beaches, the Cantal Roig and the Playa Arenal, are renowned for their long stretches of fine sand and clear waters, perfect for swimming and also popular with surfers. Protection from the wind by surrounding mountains means that the town’s beaches generally remain warm and the sea calm.

Repeated once again after huge success in recent years! The sheer splendour of Italy’s largest lake is legendary. Charming waterside resorts and villages lie sheltered by a stunning backdrop of mountain scenery. Enjoying a mild climate, Lake Garda has a unique charm that has captivated visitors for centuries, offering something for everyone. The hotel is located in the town of Garda which is set on the eastern side of the lake in an ideal location enabling easy exploration of the surrounding countryside. We have received excellent feedback from previous Spice members who have enjoyed our Lake Garda offers in previous years and with the hope of warm Autumn sunshine October is a great time to visit.

WALK THE PILGRAMS WAY 8 days, Sunday 09 October 16 from £970 Departs London Stansted only

THAILAND & THE RIVER KWAI 14 days, Sunday 09 October 16 from £1699 Departs London Heathrow, Manchester & Glasgow From your arrival in Bangkok to your departure, this holiday is sure to delight, entrance and relax - we are delighted to present to you this luxury Chillout with a twist! The three centres for this holiday are Bangkok, the River Kwai and the resort of Hua Hin – individually all exciting places to visit but combined they will quite simply take your breath away.

The Camino de Santiago (the Way of St. James) is a large network of ancient pilgrim routes stretching across Europe and coming together at the tomb of St. James (Santiago in Spanish) in Santiago de Compostela in north-west Spain. We will be walking what is known as the French Way which covers pretty and maybe surprisingly lush fields, rolling hills and quaint villages on a good well marked track. In a break from tradition WalkWise will stage a linear walk comprising of the last one hundred and eleven kilometres of this Pilgrimage. I think it’s very important to convey here the great atmosphere and camaraderie that exist on this stretch of the Camino. One meets like-minded people from all over the world. For them this is more than a walk this is a life-long experience. Walking the Camino de Santiago is not exclusive and is for everyone, young, old, fit, unfit, religious or otherwise. It has been noted that the Pilgrim’s who by far fare best are the ones that walk slowly and steadily and not too fast. There is a certificate to be collected for those that complete the route.

LA SANTA SPORTS HOLIDAY 8 days, Thursday 13 October 16 from £529

SKI BEGINNERS

Departs London Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham & Edinburgh

8 days, Saturday 25 February 17 from £589

La Santa is quite simply a brilliant sportsman’s holiday and this will be our 29th consecutive year. The complex is completely self-contained and situated on the quiet side of Lanzarote. Departs London Gatwick, Manchester & Birmingham Learn to ski with Spice and you’ll never look back! Skiing is an extremely social sport and it will open a whole world of new holidays for you to try.Slovenia is roughly the size of East Anglia – a lot less flat of course, and more like Switzerland in its contours. It has a share of the Alps (The Julian Alps in particular) and is the most forested country in mainland Europe. Situated just a few miles from the Italian and the Austrian borders, the picturesque village of Kranjska Gora is set in spectacular surroundings with the majestic Julian Alps as its backdrop. The resort is ideal for first time and improving skiers who will be well cared for by one of the top ski schools. The relaxed ambience of the resort with its local bars, restaurants, disco, casino and above all, the friendly Slovenian people makes for a truly memorable holiday.

SKI NEW YEAR 9 days, Friday 30 December 16 from £999 Departs London Gatwick, Manchester & Birmingham An extended New Year ski trip because of when New Year’s Day falls and at a great pric for the time of year!
