SPRING 2016

Dianne Livingstone Spice London & Spice Bristol/Cardiff

As I write this Spring has officially arrived (or so they tell us) and with the promise of less rain (goodness knows we need it!), warmer temperatures and longer evenings hopefully everyone is starting to feel a bit more like getting out and about and really making the most of your membership. Over the coming pages you’ll find some interesting articles (hopefully) including a look back at the ski season which after a pretty difficult start due to an absence of snow has turned into another great year. We are working on next year’s offerings at the moment but they are not quite ready for release here so do keep an eye on the Spice UK and your local group websites over the next few weeks for when these are ready to book! Another big set of events for Spice over the summer are our weekend breaks and not only is our national Center Parcs weekend in Sherwood available now for you to book but also lots other national weekends too including Dragon Boating, Edinburgh Festival, Murder Mystery and Sailing. There are also many, many more weekends available around to country (to many to list here) so you will never be without something to look forward to!

Richard Coulter Spice West Midlands

Lauren Fawkes Spice Manchster & Yorkshire

Jamie Morris Spice Scotland

And as a final mention I have to ask – have you booked your place on the Spice 35th Anniversary Ball yet? If you haven’t heard this takes place on 1 October at the Queens Hotel in Leeds and with almost 400 booked already it promises to be a night to remember!

Steve Dell Spice East Midlands

We are still adding some extras to the night and will be announcing the band and meal choices very soon plus keeping a few things back for surprises on the night. Have a read of the article as there is a chance for two lucky members to WIN event tickets by simply answering some questions. We still have a few rooms left in the Queens Hotel itself or you can stay anywhere else you like but don’t miss out on this one…

Dominic Renshaw Spice Thames Valley & Solent

Whatever your interests the Spice programme keeps delivering and I hope to see as many of you are possible in June at Center Parcs. So get booking and give yourself something’s to look forward to over the next few months.

Until next time what are you waiting for…Live your Dream.

Name: Emma Swankie

Group: Scotland Why did you join Spice? I transferred with work from our Cambridgeshire office to our Edinburgh office. What has been your favourite event? Oooo, difficult as I have enjoyed every minute of being a Spice Member though if I really have to choose one, it would be the weekend in Pitlochry that I have just returned from, fabulous venue, amazing, fun company & beautiful location. The weather was on our side too. Bonus! What has been your most challenging event? I thoroughly enjoyed White Water Rafting on the River Tunnel & although I’ve rafted 3 times before around the world, the rapid at the end of the session was fantastic. What is your funniest memory in Spice? It has simply got to be the Pitlochry weekend. I honestly laughed ALL weekend. My stomach was aching with laughter. Not knowing the Ceilidh moves certainly contributed to the continuous giggling! What would be your advice for a new member? If you are looking to enjoy a whole range of different activities with like minded, fun, enthusiastic people then Spice is definitely the social group for you. Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday? Not yet though having had a look at what is on offer, I’m definitely considering it. Have you had an embarrassing Spice moment? Oh yes. I had a wardrobe malfunction with a new dress I was wearing at the Nearly New Year Ball in January - oops! What is your life philosophy in one sentence. Life is what you make it, you get out of it what you put in, make it work for you!

Name: Helen Somerton Group: West Midlands. How long have you been a Spice Member? 5 years

Name: Donald Campbell Group: Spice Scotland How long have you been a Spice member? I joined in 1993, but I have not been a member continuously since then. Why did you join Spice? I read an advert in my local newspaper for an adventure/social club, went to the preview night, liked what I saw and the rest is history. What has been your favourite event? Too many to name individually but the weekends are always good. The planned parts are fine but the unplanned parts and the interesting people you meet are what make them so good. What is your funniest memory in Spice? That has to be the Manikin episode at Christmas Center Parcs 2010. I was the one who made it onto the floor. (with a little help from my friends) What would be your advice for a new member? Go for it, you’ve got nothing to lose.

Your favourite movie? The Holiday - without a shadow of a doubt! It’s fabulous.

Have you been on a Spice UK Holiday? I did a Zambezi White Water Rafting trip and a Trek America trip along with some Skiing trips a while ago, but I’ve not done any holidays recently because of other commitments.

Most treasured belonging? My memories/ photos.

Most treasured belonging? My health

Four people (alive or dead) you’d invite to your dream dinner party? Only 4, there are so many though a start would be. Oliver Reed, Marilyn Monroe, Gandhi, Sophia Loren

Why did you join Spice? I moved, on my own, from London to the West Midlands in 2010. I had no friends and my life consisted of just going to work and coming home again. I even started looking forward to Mondays and began to dread Fridays! I figured that this situation wasn’t going to work and if I didn’t try a bit harder to find a life I would just end up packing up my stuff and going home. 5 years on and I am still a member of Spice and I have more friends now than I ever did in the capital. What has been your favourite event? Dragon Boat Racing is by far my favorite event, especially when it’s sunny. I love the team spirit, plus the mixture of relaxing in the sun (rain) with my friends and intermittent activity so I am never bored. What has been your most challenging event? I can’t say the any of the events are difficult, there is always someone to help out and if I am a bit rubbish, well who cares? I guess the first event (Behind the Scenes of the BBC) and getting over the nerves is the toughest part.

Have you had an embarrassing Spice moment? Embarrassing moment = The girl that kisses a random on the dance floor and then falls over tells me I have had too much to drink! Your favourite movie? Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightly - I love Mr Darcy and I want to marry him. Most treasured belonging? My phone of course! It’s an addiction I ought to try and break.

Center Parcs Sherwood Our unmissable summer Center Parcs Weekend is now a Spice institution - a brilliant weekend break with TWO great exclusive parties and as much sport or relaxation as you can cope with!

2016

The fancy dress theme for Saturday night is Heroes and Villains. After the success of our included bike rides and walk last year, this year we are mixing it up a bit and we are working on an extended programme of included activities for you to join in with (or not) - whatever takes your fancy. Plus we have the return of the Dastardly Spice Challenge adding a brilliant fun event into the weekend which will be another hi-lite – planned by Dianne from Spice London if you were there last year and took part in this then you’ll know how

just how much fun it was but don’t worry there will be a few changes to keep things fresh this time! This is a mix of Treasure Hunt, Photo Challenge and Scavenger Hunt with a couple of twists. Teams of five. We will put teams together if you don’t have 5 of you. The sub tropical paradise is the centre of attraction with giant waves, water chutes, Jacuzzi’s, flumes, a thrilling wild water rapids ride, and much more. You can spend all day in the tropically heated ‘dome’, or move outdoors - tennis, squash, sailing, bikes, canoeing, gym, badminton, bowls, archery, - the list is endless... (you pay extra for these). There are also few extra Spice Events organised by your local Spice Group like our Welcome Drinks Reception, BBQs, Badminton group sessions, ten pin bowling games to provide some great group focal points during the weekend. Or you can just choose to chill! We also have our exclusive Friday and Saturday night parties! Friday Night sees our exclusive Welcome Disco to get the weekend off to a flying start and Saturday night is our exclusive Heroes and Villains Fancy Dress Party.

Sample programme of the weekend (subject to change!)

Friday – Arrive and find your lodge (don’t forget to return your car to the car park). Meet your fellow villa mates and head to your welcome drinks in your coordinators villa! Then it’s on to the Welcome Disco in the Venue. Saturday – Wake up (eventually!). Grab a bite to eat and let the day’s activities begin. Today you can choose from – • • • • • • • •

AM short orientation walk of the village centre (great for any newbies or just to get some air!) AM exercise class in the Venue (1-2 hours) PM Group badminton sessions (small charge) PM Ten Pin Bowling (small charge) PM the Great Spice Quiz (you do not want to miss this!) PM Rapids meet up in the Village Dome PM moderate mountain bike ride off Village Back to the villa to freshen up and a bite to eat. Get into your Fancy Dress or best party dresses (gentlemen) and it’s off to the Venue once again to PARTY!

Sunday - Wake up again (eventually!). Plenty to do today – • • • • • • • •

AM before the cars start to build up Speedy Road Bike ride off Village. Between 1525 miles depending on the general consensus from the group. You will need your own road bike (a Center Parcs hire bike won’t do!) – more details with joining. AM exercise class in the Venue AM Steve easy walk 5-6 miles off Village AM Easy bike ride around the Village AM Moderate bike ride off Village PM Dastardly Spice Challenge (small charge) Farewell BBQ’s with your local group Evening Spa deal (spaces will be limited so will need to be pre-booked - more details to follow)

Your weekend finishes on Monday but some of you may need to leave this afternoon. If you can stay for the night we normally get together this evening in the Sports Bar where there is usually a small disco but this isn’t exclusive to Spice! Monday – That’s all folks for another year – you will need to vacate your villa by 10am but can stay on site much longer. We usually have a discounted Spa session today but spaces will be limited so will need to be pre-booked (details to follow)

Ski Reflection

What a Ski season! It looks like you all had a lot of fun.... So we took over 400 members and we have our photos and memories to look back on. What are your stories? What’s your favourite memory? We have loved all the photos that have been shared and liked on Facebook. Some of the areas visited include the 3 Valleys, Les Deux Alps, Andorra (twice), Courchevel, St Christoph, Courmayeur, Champoluc and Arabba - all destinations across France, Austria and Italy. The snow for European ski resorts was late yet again but this did not deter our groups who all made the best of it with real zeal and enthusiasm which is the Spice way. Fortunately, for the first time other than the usual knocks and bruises our own co-ordinators got the short straw and two of them had injuries Richard from West Midlands fractured his shoulder and Jonathan who looks after Yorkshire had concussion after a fall. Richard is on the mend and driving again and so is Jonathan but this highlights the need to wear a helmet when skiing - you wouldn’t ride a bike without a helmet - Spice strongly recommends that helmets are used at all times!. We have a very active Spice Facebook group for Skiers (Search on “Spice Ski UK Group”) which is a fun way to break the ice and keep in touch with your ski pals. And if you are thinking of joining us next year – watch out for those early booking discounts, and book early to secure the trip you want.

Coordinator’s Corner Welcome to our Spring 2016 newsletter which gives you an overview of lots of the Spice events coming up in the next three months – as always, full information is on the website and we always recommend checking out the web write ups to get the full picture. The Spice office’s favourite time of the year is fast approaching, the nights getting lighter and the weather seeming to be full of promise of balmy summer nights & days ahead. And of course with the better weather our sights turn to lots more outdoor activities with Water-Skiing, Go-Ape, gliding, White Water Rafting, Dragon Boating, Camping, Narrowboating, Evening Rambles, Carriage Driving, Windsurfing, and much more to whet our appetites. We have recently added several National summer events to the events listing namely the fabulous Center Parcs weekend, the brilliant Dragon Boat Racing (Camping & Party), the entertaining Edinburgh Festival break and the ever popular, great value hostel Weekends that Spice Yorkshire are famous for. Our theme for summer Center Parcs this year (which was voted in by Spice facebookers) is ‘Heroes & Villains’, which gives you great scope for outfits. April and May are also our most prolific months for Bank Holidays with two bank holiday weekends – we have plenty of weekends away if you feel like getting away from it all but you need to be quick if you want to book something as they are already filling fast. You can quickly take a look at all our forthcoming weekend breaks by going to the events page on the website and selecting UK Breaks on the drop down list of categories. We also have our National 35th Anniversary Ball taking place in Yorkshire for the first time, it is in Leeds on 1st October 2016; this may seem a long way away but it already has 325 people booked and with room for just over 400 it won’t be long before we are full. We only celebrate the anniversary of Spice being formed every five years and people are still talking about how much fun they had at the 25th & 30th balls – so this is one not to be missed with lots of surprises on the night.

Lauren

Welcome to new members You’ve taken the first steps and joined Spice; the next step is to come along to your first event. We know this can be a daunting prospect when you don’t know anyone else in the group but there’s no need to be apprehensive, Spice are a friendly bunch. Most of us come along on our own to events so we’re all well used to meeting and welcoming new people. A great way of getting into Spice is by booking your first events right away and getting your first event “under your belt”. Even better is to try a weekend away and get to know a smaller group of people really well. If you’ve not been to a Spice Preview Night we hold them every month (see page 13 for dates) so do make an effort to come to one of these, and please next time we are on an event, come up and say hello so we can put a face to the name! If you have any queries at all, please give us a call in the office and we will always do our utmost to help you.

Contact us The Spice office is open from 10am until 6pm Monday to Friday except on public holidays. You can contact us on 0161 864 2554 during these hours or leave a message on the 24 hour answerphone. New Members Brief A great way to get into the Club is jump in the deep end and book yourself on to an ACTION Event such as Dragon Boating, Windsurfing, Badminton, Rounders or the Rambles. By far the best 'way in' is to book an activity weekend - you'll never look back! Introduce yourself as a new member to the first Spicer you come across and simply say "what have you done with Spice". You will either end up saying how brave your fellow Spicer is or they will say "nothing - I'm a new" member" in which case you can both go looking for someone with experience! You will find one thing all Spicers have in common, all over the country, is that they are friendly, positive people happy to talk freely to each other - there is no such thing as a stranger in Spice. Offer to share transport - meet people before you even arrive! Attend a preview night as soon as you can! Wear your best smile and GO FOR IT! LIVE YOUR DREAM!!! Spice Preview Nights in Leeds, Sheffield and York… Our Preview Nights are a great way to make your start with SPICE and the easiest way of meeting a few new people and finding out how it all works. We also run a free raffle for all who attend (existing members too) with events as the prizes – just to add a touch of Spice to the evening. The plan is to welcome everyone, talk through the basics of Spice, and give you more info on the coming programme and an opportunity to book on events if you like. You can of course book in the usual ways (phone, web, or post - but remember the Spice motto – “You snooze, you lose – you rest, you rust!” Jonathan and enthusiastic volunteers will be on hand to answer any queries you may have and there may be an opportunity to watch the Spice DVD. Remember, everyone who attends is in the same boat so don’t be nervous about attending, come on your own (lots of people do) or come with a friend. Call us to book in advance or just turn up - either way, do come and see what you’ve been missing!!

Dates: Tuesday 24th May Tuesday 12th July Place: Brooklyn Bar, 50 Call Lane, Leeds (LS1 6DT)

Dates: Tuesday 12th April Tuesday 14th June Place: The Old Queens Head, 40 Pond Hill, Sheffield (S1 2BG)

Date:

Tuesday 26th April Tuesday 26th July Place: The Royal Oak, 18 Goodramgate, York (YO1 7LG)

Brooklyn Bar is on Call Lane, between the entrance to Queens Court and the railway bridge. Disabled access is through the side entrance from Queens Court. The nearest outdoor parking is opposite the Adelphi pub unless you get very lucky and get a space just outside the venue. Indoor car parking is in the Trinity Leeds Car Park behind Chaophraya or in the Q-Park Criterion Place upstairs from Bibis Italianissimo. Why not get a drink from the bar downstairs and then join us upstairs?

The Old Queens Head is right alongside Sheffield Bus station and adjacent to Ponds Forge International Sports Centre on Pond Hill. The nearest tram stop is Fitzalan Square / Ponds Forge just a 5 minute walk away. The railway station is a 10 minute walk. There is some street parking on Pond Hill and more on Pond Street, or you can use the car park at Ponds Forge or the Castle Gate Q-Park next to the Travelodge. We meet in the area to the right as you enter through the main door from Pond Hill.

The Royal Oak is at the Monk Bar end of Goodramgate. There is no parking along Goodramgate so use one of the car parks just outside of the walled shopping centre. We meet in the upstairs function room which is through the inner door and then up the stairs on your right. Why not get a drink from the bar downstairs when you arrive and then join us upstairs?

For all locations we meet from 7:45pm. Please try to be there by 8pm for the talk.

Rambles - Grading System

Spice Rambles Rambles: Essential Information All Spice walks are designed to be fun, enjoyable, and above all, safe. All the walk leaders we use are experienced and carry first aid and emergency equipment but all walkers must ensure that they are properly equipped for the conditions. If you are a newcomer to Spice Rambles, please feel free to contact the walk leaders through the Spice Office. The leaders will be happy to discuss the appropriate type of clothing and equipment for use on Spice walks but here are a few general points to bear in mind. No jeans or trainers, please. Any Spice Ramble of Grade 3 or harder may involve walking over open country, not necessarily over welldefined paths, and it should not be assumed that you are going for a stroll in the park. You should wear warm clothing, preferably in the form of several layers, and all walkers must bring waterproof jackets and trousers. Happily, accidents and injuries are extremely rare but "injuries" are often caused by ill-fitting boots or inappropriate socks. A relatively minor injury out in the wilds can result in the walk being curtailed, so please ensure that you are happy with the fit of your boots and socks. Bring liquids and a packed lunch. Even if the write up suggests a convenient pub stop, please do not take this for granted. Pubs have been known to be full or even closed. A Spice ramble is not a race. The leader's responsibility is to ensure the safety of all the party, so he will often have to spend time at the back of the group. All walkers should ensure that they do not lose contact with the leader. If you can't see the leader, please stop and wait. (Neither Spice nor the walk leaders can be held responsible if a walker sustains an injury whilst out of touch with the leader.) Please be ready on time. There will be over 20 walkers taking part in a typical Spice ramble. The time specified in the newsletter is the Start time. If you are not ready to start walking promptly, you will be inconveniencing all those who had the foresight to get ready on time. Some rambles give a postcode near to the meet point; these are given for guidance only and members should not rely on Satnav systems to find the precise meet point for a walk. Always take the printed directions and a map with you. Please remember that Spice cannot be held responsible for the security of the car parking. Please ensure that you take sensible precautions to protect your car and belongings. Well behaved dogs are welcome on most walks unless otherwise stated, but must be pre-booked - please write it on your booking form or in the notes when booking online if you are bringing dogs. It is the owner's responsibility to ensure that the dog is kept under control on a fixed lead with a length of no more than two metres at all times, and is not allowed to cause a nuisance. You must bring a suitable lead and use it. Dogs must not be allowed off the lead at any time unless agreed with the walk leader after consultation with the other walkers.

Facebook We have a Facebook group for our walkers and walk leaders to share News, Photos, Gossip, Events and all things ‘walk’ related. Please follow the link below & join if you are one of our many, many walkers! www.facebook.com/groups/SpiceYorkshireWalkers

Peak District Walk: Bleaklow and the Aircraft wrecks Date: Meet: Cost: Host:

Sunday 3rd April at 10:30am Glossop # (SK13 8HT) £5.50 Member, £6.50 Guest Mick Cornfield on 07710 192399

After meeting in Glossop we drive to the small layby at Doctor’s Gate, the course of an old Roman road, we follow this route to Old Woman the crossroads of the Pennine Way and from here we follow the old packhorse route, on reaching Ashton clough we cross the small brook and climb steadily beside the waterfalls on an often narrow path, here we find the first sign of the Skytrain which crashed further up but some wreckage has fallen down over the years, to get to the actual site is a steep climb up the grassy bank of James's thorn, another short climb to the spur overlooking Glossop is the site and memorial to the Lancaster, circling round shelf moor to the Superfortress site, by far the largest. We then pick up the Pennine Way for our return. This walk is mostly on open moor so good boots and warm clothing are essential as is a reasonable level off fitness. Distance: 8 miles

Sunday 24th April at 10:30am From Alstonefield village (DE6 2FX) £5.50 Member, £6.50 Guest Mick Cornfield on 07710 192399

Join me Roger, for the second in a series of walks tracing the route of the River Don. Today we criss-cross the river on a variety of stepping stones and foot bridges. A pretty walk along the banks of the river, encountering turbulent & calm sections along the way. Starting out from the Trans Pennine Trail car park we initially head south towards Stocksbridge before turning north to reach Oxspring returning to the car park via the Trans Pennine Trail ‘tunnel’. Bring a spirit of adventure however if poor weather we may need to reroute. Please ensure you wear appropriate clothing and are familiar with the Rambles: Essential Information page. Grade: 3; Distance: 7 miles

Starting from the village of Alstonfield, the parish stone spelling, we follow bridleways and footpaths to descend below Narrowdale Hill to the hamlet of Narrowdale. A steady climb to cross Beresford Lane and turn to cross Archford Moor, descend to the lane below Ecton Hill to Back of Ecton. Finally circling round the Wetton Hills to follow footpaths back to the start. Distance: 6 miles

Peak District Walk: Wootton and the Weaver Hills

Date: Place: Cost: Hosts:

Sunday 17th April at 10:30am From Dimminsdale # (ST10 4BU) £5.50 Member, £6.50 Guest Marie and Paul Moss

We start off on the flat for a mile or so to warm up, before we start the ascent – Firstly through woodland to skirt Alton Towers. Next we go through a hole in the wall to enter Wootton Park. Climbing steadily, we cross the Park, through Wootton, and up onto the ridge of the Weaver Hills and our ½ way point. On a clear day, the views are stunning. Having gained about 300m in height it’s (mostly) downhill all the way back, via Ramshorn Common. Distance: 10 miles

Ramble: Malham Classic Malham in the spring

Date: Place: Meet: Cost: Host:

Sunday 17th April at 10:30am Malham, Yorkshire Dales (BD23 4DA) Malham visitors Centre car park £5 Member, £7 Guest Roy Layton on 07801 070526

Join Roy and Linda for this Grade 3, eight mile traditional to Spice 'first walk of spring.' Spring time is the best time to visit Malham, one of the most popular villages in the Dales. The tourist droves have not yet reached summertime saturation levels and the wild garlic valley near the beginning of the route makes your mouth (and eyes) water. This 8 mile route is the classic Malham walk which tours the main features of the area, Gordale Scar, Malham Tarn and Malham Cove in an anti-clockwise direction. The route up the waterfall at Gordale Scar involves a little bit of scrambling but it is well within the capabilities of most people, if there is too much water in the stream we will walk around. Ring Roy if you are unsure about this section of the walk. Bring food and drink for the halfway lunch stop. Lost? Late? Can't make it? Ring or text Roy. Then the open country and the superb views, on the way we pass the landmark features you could see from below, first the Hurkling stones to the Wheel stones on to White Tor and the distinctive Salt Cellar before joining Derwent edge, Dovestone Tor, Cakes of Bread and Bradfield Gate Head lead us to the highest point Back Tor. From here we descend via Lost Lad, named after a shepherd boy lost his life in a blizzard, on reaching the reservoir we follow the edge to Derwent Dam, with views almost as the Dambusters would have seen of the twin towers, crossing below the dam to the visitor centre. Ramble: Farmers Foot Walk The man who put his foot down

Date: Place: Meet: Cost: Host:

Sunday 1st May at 10:30am Ripponden, West Yorkshire Booth Wood reservoir car park £5 Member, £7 Guest Roy Layton 07801 070526

Join Roy and Linda for this 9 mile grade 3 ’the Farmer who put his foot down’ walk. Stott Hall Farm has stood perched 1100 feet up on the bleak Pennines since 1737. For over 200 years there was nothing else there but the birds, the sheep, the wind and the rain. But, after two centuries of splendid isolation, the M62 arrived - literally on the farm's doorstep. When the M62 motorway was being built in the 1970s a local farmer refused to sell his farm and as his farm house was bang in the middle of the proposed motorway route, he kind of figured that he had them over a barrel, Doh! The powers that be decided they’d had enough and split the motorway to pass both sides of the farm house. We pass the well double glazed farmhouse on this walk. This 8 mile moderate walk manages to capture the flavour of the moors before and after the incursion of the M62. Grade: 3; Distance: 9 miles

Join Roy and Linda on this Grade 3 moderate 9 mile traditional Spice walk. The walk starts from Barden Bridge on the river Wharfe, above Bolton Priory and heads upstream before climbing to the focal point of the day, Simon’s Seat. This is usually the first big hill of the walking season and requires a 'bit at a time' strategy for most of us and a bit of patience from the Gym Freaks. The views here are extensive and all the better for the suddenness in which they appear and the fact that it’s lunch time. The return is a gradual descent to the famous Bolton Abbey estate. Dogs are not allowed on this walk because of the grouse moor regulations. Grade: 3; Distance: 9 miles 18

It is 1889. Sir Charles Biskerville has been found dead in the garden of his ancestral home. There are no murder weapons and no footprints, only the paw prints of a gigantic hound some twenty yards away. Speculation is rife that there is canine involvement. Legend has it that the Biskerville family is cursed and that a terrifying dog haunts the moor. Has this luminous, ghastly and spectral beast struck again? The doctor that attended the scene believes that the baronet died of a heart attack brought on by shock but the question that everyone must answer is this. What did Sir Charles see on that dark, fateful night? We'll play in small teams and some of you will get to play the parts of the characters.

Date: Place: Meet: Cost:

After seeing Mark Fenton's ability to gently coax even the most frightened, or physically disadvantaged people into achieving brilliant outdoor feats, I started these special sessions which have proved extremely popular! You just need to bring a little faith, and the will to succeed! The feeling you’ll get from your success is well worth it all. Mark will get you to overcome any fears by building up your confidence gradually. First we get used to the equipment and how to use it on a few very short descents, before tackling some bigger abseils if you feel able. You’ll not be forced to do anything you are uncomfortable with, or feel stupid if you back out of any stage. So go on…you’ve nothing to lose but your fears! Medical Note: If you have any medical conditions that could prevent you taking part in this adventure activity, please contact your doctor in advance to check. If you are unsure, please contact the instructor, Mark Fenton directly on 07798 790766 or your Spice office.

Tonight's challenge is Killer Pool. Killer Pool is a good way of keeping everyone involved in the game. It is to a large extent a game of chance and is intended to level out skill differences somewhat. Each player's name will be picked out at random and written down. At the side of each name tally marks will be written down. These marks will represent your lifelines. The balls will be racked up and the player whose name is at the top of the list breaks the balls from anywhere behind the baulk line. If nothing goes in on the break shot the player does not lose a life but gets another shot, on which they do have to pot a ball. On each shot if nothing is potted, or if the white goes down or leaves the table the player loses a life (except on break shots). A lifeline will be wiped off from the side of their name. Whenever the white ball is potted the next player must play their shot anywhere from behind the baulk line. When the last ball is potted the balls will be re-racked and we start all over again. We have the tables booked from 8pm through to closing time. The winning team will be the ones who have won the most games throughout the night.

IT'S NO GOOD THINKING ABOUT IT - YOU HAVE TO LIVE THE DREAM AND DO IT! THIS HAS GOT TO BE ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING EVENTS SPICE OFFERS ITS MEMBERS! We now have over five hundred members nationally in the '10,000ft Club' who have tasted the heady heights of this special unique freedom. The members that have done it (just ask myself or Jackie Hill) rate it as one of their best events ever! Target Skysports operates from the Drop Zone at Hibaldstow Airfield, near Brigg in North Lincolnshire. There is a café & bar on site as well as toilets & showers and camping is available at the airfield for free. To Tandem Skydive you are attached to one of the country's top parachute instructors (in keeping with SPICE policy) who then leaps from an aircraft at up to 15,000ft. You fall through the air with the greatest of ease at a mere 120 miles an hour in free fall - for approximately 35 seconds - before the instructor eventually pulls the ripcord and the parachute safely carries you back to earth for a gentle ride down of about 4 minutes to a tip toe landing in the pit. Tandem Skydiving offers the easiest and quickest way to experience your first jump without the need for a lengthy training session. A short 20-25 minute briefing session will guide you through what is required to exit the aircraft, freefall from up to 15,000ft and land a modern high-performance square canopy after a lengthy canopy ride. After your training, you will be fully kitted up with all necessary equipment before boarding the aircraft for the 20-30 minute climb to altitude, giving you plenty of time to admire the scenery – or come to terms with your nerves or fear of heights! The exit from the aircraft is from up to 15,000ft, allowing a freefall for around 1 minute at speeds of approximately 120mph until the parachute is deployed at 5,000ft. The exhilaration of freefalling is absolutely breath-taking with sensations which just have to be experienced to be believed. Canopy deployment is controlled by your Instructor at the end of the freefall and is just the start of a slow, peaceful ride down to landing lasting around 5 minutes.

...you won't meet many people who have tried this one!

If you’ve never tried sailing, here’s your chance. This session is aimed at total beginners and offers a chance for even the most dedicated landlubber to enjoy the exhilaration and satisfaction of utilising the natural power of the elements to propel yourself across water. Our one and a half hour session will commence with a short safety talk, and a general not-too-technical overview of dingy sailing. The ‘chat’ will be kept to an absolute minimum; the emphasis will be on getting out there and having a go. It really is close supervision; the instructor will be in the boat with three students. Come on and give it a try! Please bring a change of clothing (just in case) and a waterproof jacket, footwear should be pumps or light trainers that you do not mind getting wet. Please ring 01924 302360 for a weather check before leaving home. Remember that this event is wind dependent!

Dates: Sunday 15th May from 9:15am to 5pm Sunday 10th July from 9:15am to 5pm Place: Warwick International, Guys Cliff # (CV34 5YD) Cost: £175 Member, £185 Guest This is a unique opportunity to learn the ultimate medieval art, with The Knights of Middle England. Our day is run by Karl Ude-Martinez who has over 12 years of experience in performing live jousting shows all over Europe. For obvious safety reasons, we will not be allowed to actually hit each other with our jousts as death often results from that – and such bravery is not deemed culturally appropriate to the modern age! However, they use a quintain (or dummy) to take the impact. On arrival you will be given a safety briefing and then your riding will be assessed. You will learn basic jousting skills such as hitting the quintain and learn basic sword and staff fighting. Being a knight also involves being dressed in medieval costume. No real riding experience is needed, but would be an advantage. For safety reasons if the instructor on the day feels your riding is not strong enough for certain tasks, you will make it up in other activities. Reasonable fitness is required as you’ll be in the saddle for most of the day. Note: Unlike most Spice events, this is not a Spice exclusive but is shared with public bookings. Therefore, we cannot guarantee you will be with other Spice members.

Please be there by 7:30pm. Cost: £8 Member, £9 Guest Host: Paul Timewell on 07956 586851 Even with the support of a couple of ‘Honorary Laydees’, I’m afraid to say that the girls put in a pretty poor performance last time (as I was one of them, I can say that with a clear conscience!). I’ve been asked can we put the event on again so that they can gain revenge. All I’m asking is that you play gently with the boys. Thanks! Are you a closet Han Solo or Princess Leia? Perhaps you’re more JarJar Binks! Regardless of that, release your inner storm trooper in the warm confines of Laser Quest Sheffield. We’ve booked two games lasting a total of around an hour in which you can find out whether or not you’ve got what it takes to save the universe. After that, we’ll move on to the more relaxing venue of a local hostelry, where we can award medals, compare wounds and boast about the day we saved the Rebel Alliance from the evil clutches of the Empire (or Spice Manchester, as it’s more commonly known)!

This event has been designed and run by Maureen Fearon who is one of our popular trainers particularly as our love guru however she is also an E.F.T. therapist and has had many requests to run this day. She says, “I came across this technique years ago and because it seemed “mad” I rejected it, thinking “I’m not doing that!”. However it kept popping into my world and I became curious. I tried it and was flummoxed as to how it seemed to work like magic! I just had to explore what it was all about and I have been so grateful that I did. It has been a fantastic tool within my own personal development and coping with the tough stuff that comes along in life which can “floor” us. With clients I have experienced the most amazing outcomes.”

Afternoon Tea and Tour of Skipton Castle

Sunday Lunch at Crosspool Tavern, Sheffield

A complete medieval fortress

Sunday lunch in Sheffield

Date: Place: Meet: Cost: Host:

Date: Place: Cost: Host:

Sunday 22nd May at 11:45am Skipton Castle, Skipton (BD23 1AW) at the twin towers at top of Main Street £22 Member, £25 Guest Jonathan Banks on 07969 349714 and Jill Pearson on 07788 144778

Includes: admission to Skipton Castle, guided tour and afternoon tea Extras: additional refreshments Over 900 years old, Skipton Castle is one of the most complete and best preserved medieval castles in England and is well worth a visit at any season of the year. We'll meet outside at the twin towers of the Castle at the top of Main Street at 11:45am. Our guided tour will start at 12pm prompt and will last for approximately an hour and a half. Following this you'll have the chance to wander around and explore this lovely Castle before we meet at the Tearoom for afternoon tea at 2pm. Afterwards, if you wish, you'll have time to explore some more until the Castle closes at 6pm. Obviously the castle is very old and a lot of the stone floors are very uneven so we recommend you wear sensible flat footwear. Visitors can explore every corner of this impressive history-rich castle, which withstood a three-year siege during the Civil War. View the Banqueting Hall, the Kitchen, the Bedchamber and Privy. Climb from the depths of the Dungeon to the top storey of the Watch Tower. Imagine what life was like when Skipton Castle provided protection and security from invaders. Even now more historic finds are being discovered. Recently an ancient well was uncovered, helping to explain how the castle garrison survived the siege of 1643-5. Fully roofed and with an enchanting early Tudor courtyard the stout towers of the gatehouse only hint at the splendour which is revealed as the visitor enters the castle grounds. Facing the gatehouse there is a large tower, originally the watchtower - the most important feature of the castle's defences. To its left is the present entrance to the inner core of the stronghold. Skipton Castle - The Conduit Court and Lady Ann Clifford's Yew TreeMasons' marks can be seen in the stonework within the main entrance and the Conduit Court. Stonemasons would leave a carved initial or symbol to show which stones they had dressed so that they could be paid for their work. In medieval days visitors would have crossed a bridge over a moat and then passed under a portcullis and through the main doors before reaching the inner courtyard. Skipton Castle - The arms of John Clifford complete with wyverns half dragon, half sea serpent. The grooves of the portcullis and the opening for the drawbar of the great door can still be seen. Leading off the Conduit Court is the Banqueting Hall, the social centre of the Medieval castle, and where the Lord and Lady would have dined. The medieval kitchen would never have passed the scrutiny of today's public health inspectors; it would have been a crowded, hot and smelly place. The garderobe (privy) opens straight off the kitchen. Next to it was a chute which discharged kitchen waste into the stream below. Pipes made from elmwood brought water from outside, but if the castle was besieged and the pipeline cut off, the inhabitants had to rely on rainwater collected from the roof and channelled into a cistern beneath the Conduit Court. Location: Skipton Castle is located at the top of Skipton High Street. Skipton is easy to reach by all modes of transport. The nearest car park is the Bailey Car Park BD23 1UA and this is free to pre-booked groups so you'll need to mention you are with the Spice Group to the Attendant. 30

Western Style Rifle Shooting Experience .. fire "the real thing" with the experts

Dates: Sunday 3rd April Sunday 5th June Sunday 31st July Place: Birmingham Shooting Centre, Hockley # (B18 7RL) Cost: £4 (Deposit – balance to be paid on day) Extras: Pay balance of £25 on arrival to club This is an extremely sought after Spice event, and we have recently revised the format with staggered timeslots to minimise waiting time. You are welcome to stay for the whole afternoon if you wish, but this way, you know when you will be on the range rather than having to wait your turn. With extremely tight firearms laws, it is rare to find opportunities for our members to fire live ammunition. However, under close expert supervision, here’s an opportunity to fire Western Style Lever Action Rifles (like John Wayne used!). They are 357 Magnum Calibre, but recoil is similar to that of a full power spring action air rifle, so you don’t need to be built like a cowboy! After booking in (bring photo ID such as passport or driving licence), we will have a safety talk including range rules and weapon handling safety and etiquette. We’ll then be introduced to our weapons and have time honing our skills on the range. There will be 4 instructors, so 4 people can be shooting at any one time, as the rules dictate that tuition has to be 1:1 when you are using this class of rifle. Depending on what is going on on the day, we should be able to meet other club members and learn about their firearms. Afterwards, we can relax in the club bar.

Cut Gate Intermediate Mountain Bike Ride

Beginners Kayaking

Classic ride over the moors

Paddle around Pugneys

Date: Place: Meet: Cost: Host:

Date: Saturday 25th June 2016 from 1:45pm to 3pm Place: Pugneys Country Park, Wakefield (WF2 7EQ) Cost: £18 Member, £20 Guest

Saturday 25th June at 10am Fairholmes, Ladybower, Bamford (S33 0AQ) P&D car park Fairholmes cycle hire/cafe £16 Member, £18 Guest Jeremy Sainter on 07974 967209

This is a stunning ride over the moors with fabulous views and the feeling of being out in the great outdoors. This is an out and back ride from Ladybower round Langsett and return along the same route. There are tough climbs at either end but you have the satisfaction of riding down what you have had to struggle up. This can only be described as a must do Peak District classic. This will be a good day out with some big hills so you will need good bike fitness and be prepared to get a bit wet and muddy. There is some technical riding so you should be comfortable on your bike and be happy to ride some rocky and muddy sections. Lunch will be at a pub en route but it is a fair way round so please bring plenty of snacks and drinks to keep you going whilst riding. Regarding clothing, bring waterproofs in case of foul weather and wear tracksuit bottoms (not too baggy) or cycling shorts plus a fleece type top and gloves to protect your hands. SPD’s, lightweight walking boots or good trainers are best on the feet. We recommend that you bring a change of clothes in the car and take extra clothing with you on the ride. Helmets MUST be worn at all times during the ride. This ride is not for beginners to mountain biking and we very strongly recommend at least attendance on a Spice improvers ride BEFORE attempting this one. Grade: 2; Distance: 22 miles

Historic Country Ride Horse riding with a difference

Date: Place: Meet: Cost: Host:

Saturday 25th June from 12:45pm to 3pm Baildon, West Yorkshire # (BD16 3AU) Golcar Farm, Spring Lane £56 Member, £59 Guest Vicki Sykes

An exciting venture for people interested in local history and legend who would like to do something a little different amongst Yorkshire’s beautiful countryside. An Historic Ride with Vicki Sykes is a unique experience around Baildon Moor, Shipley Glen and the surrounding area with all its historic associations which include:

Dick Turpin’s route and how he met his death on the gallows  the story of the mad man in the cellar  the monk killed by Oliver Cromwell whose ghost haunts Baildon Moor on the anniversary of his death  the tragedy of Milner Fields  the longest toboggan ride in the country  and much, much more ... Rides are tailored to suit individual capabilities in small groups of four people. Our ride lasts for 2 hours. For those who enjoy natural history, Country Rides continues to offer rides to discover the habitats of many different species of birds and other wildlife. The tranquillity of the countryside is best experienced on horseback and with lapwings overhead, and the ever changing colours of the landscape, this is the perfect way to escape from the stress of everyday life and just chill out. Please state your height and weight at the time of booking.

The idea of this one and a half hour session is to encourage anyone who has never been in one of these “fun boats” to come along and have a go. The group will be limited to 8 people so that the instructor (in a kayak) can let you do as much or as little as you individually want on the day. We have chosen Pugneys with its flat water, to make your introduction to kayaking as trouble free as possible. You will not even be asked to capsize (the bit everyone always seems to remember!). You will require a change of clothing (the water runs down the paddle and up your sleeves!), a windproof top, old cagoule or the like and a pair of old trainers and towel. Showers are available on site. Please ring 01924 302360 for a weather check before leaving home.

The wall stretches 73 miles from coast to coast and was begun in AD122 under the command of Emperor Hadrian to mark the northern limit of the mighty Roman Empire. It may come as a surprise to some to know that it is not just a wall, there are numerous forts, mile castles, bridges, roads, towns, dwellings and temples. Today nearly 2000 years later, much of it still remains, so much so that it is now designated a World Heritage site. The best preserved sections of the wall lie between Lanercost Priory in the West and Chesters Cavalry Fort in the East and it is no coincidence that this also happens to encompass the wildest, most inaccessible and arguably the most beautiful landscape with dramatic ridges, open moors, long escarpments, lochs and deep river valleys. The bank holiday walking programme of 6 walks over the three days concentrates on the very finest sections of the wall and the surrounding area. Our hotel for the trip is the comfortable Gilsland Spa which with en-suite rooms, well stocked bar and hearty food is ideally located just a mile from the wall itself.

This weekend finds us sailing from Anderton on The Trent and Mersey Canal. There are a few double bed areas going first to couples. Other beds are single or bunks. Due to the ‘cosy’ accommodation, wardrobe space is limited. All bed linen is provided but not towels. Breakfast and lunch will be on board but evening meals will be out. A kitty will be collected for any group expenditure or meals. As usual on our Spice weekends away the Spice spirit of adventure, enjoyment and fun will be available in ample measures. We have our boats from Friday afternoon until early Monday morning though of course you are most welcome to 'jump ship' on Sunday afternoon. Boat handover is usually between 2:30pm & 4pm with departure at the latest 5pm to enable us to reach our evening meal location. If you would rather not take the Friday afternoon off work, don't worry, there will be an opportunity to join us later on the Friday evening!

Julie Hyde, an accomplished artist, and experienced tutor, has put together a relaxed, fun programme to draw out all your latent artistic talents. Julie will dispel the mystique of drawing and painting into simple steps which anyone can follow. Demonstrating various techniques using pencil, watercolour and other media, she will show you how easily you can create sketches and finished works that you’ll be delighted to display. On Saturday we'll begin by getting a feel for sketching and how to 'see' things to paint. Then you’ll discover the many ways to use watercolour, and by Sunday you'll be using your newly acquired skills and techniques to put the final touches to your finished piece of work. Previous members that have been on this weekend have been amazed by what they were capable of creating! You are welcome to bring your own equipment and materials but, if you are a complete newcomer to art then all basic equipment will be provided with a small charge at the end of the weekend for consumables such as paints and paper, dependant on the amount used.

This weekend will appeal to both social walkers who want shorter walks and more serious walkers who want longer ones as on the Saturday there will be the option of a longer or shorter walk. There is also plenty to do for non-walkers or if you want to mix & match walking with social / tourist stuff. The Gower is worth a visit even if you are a non-walker and the mumbles just to the east of Swansea is a great place. We stay at the Village Hotel just outside Swansea. This is a fabulous new hotel with great leisure facilities; including a 25m Heated Indoor Pool, Aerobic Studio, Whirlpool Spa, Steam Room & Sauna and Fitness Studio. As with all Village hotels it boasts its own pub and coffee shop. There is also the added bonus of a social programme for that après walking! Extras: evening meals and marina charges STOP PRESS – In 2016, due to the great popularity of this event, there will again be three Spice boats sailing in this prestigious race. The three boats are of similar size and design, which gives the opportunity for Spice members to sail against their fellow competing Spice crews as well as the rest of the race fleet – a “Spicing-up” of this already exciting event! Boats and berths for this event are already selling out for 2016 and even 2017. This is a unique opportunity to have one of the most exciting and spectacular sailing weekends in the sailing calendar. Some Spice members have told us that this is the best weekend that they have ever had! The Round the Island Race is THE event of the year for South Coast sailors and attracts big-name international competitors. The 1700 boats competing are a mix of family sailors and top racers. The boats range from small day boats to round-the world racing yachts and make for a spectacular sight. It is the biggest yacht race in the world and the fourth biggest sporting event in the UK. Some take it very seriously, others just enjoy taking part. EnCompass Sailing fits somewhere in the middle - we usually do very well in our class.

Walking Weekend Lake District Watershed Ultimate Challenge Part 1 Date: Fri 1st Jul 2016 - Sun 3rd Jul 2016 Place: Shap Wells Hotel, North East Lakes (CA10 3QU) Cost: £185 Member Twin, £205 Guest (twin/double), £225 Member Single, £185 Member Double (Deposit £40) Includes: 2 nights’ accommodation, 2 evening meals, 2 breakfasts, 2 picnic lunches, 2 days of guided walks Extras: Taxi to the start of the walk on Saturday This beast of a challenge is for experienced and fit walkers only. Maybe don’t even think about it unless you have done one before. The walk itself will take a minimum of 9 hours at a good pace and is over 16 miles long with around 4,500 ft ascent, most people would split that into two days walking. The Watershed itself demarks the rivers that flow to the north of the Lake District and those that drain southwards so during this walk we will in effect be traversing the very spine of the Far Eastern Fells. 40

There are camping options on Friday and Saturday night. On Saturday night is our Dragon Boat Disco. The atmosphere is always great on Saturday night, with a DJ and bar, for a very special Spice exclusive party with fish & chips (served the proper way – out of the paper!). On Sunday is the dragon boat racing. These are great days out - Enter the Dragon! Up to 18 people sitting side by side in a forty foot long boat, with a carved dragon's head and tail attached. A drummer in the prow beating time, a helmsman in the stern keeping the boat on course with a giant paddle, the crew, ten each side speeding the boat down the river to the finish line! The atmosphere is brilliant, which is why this is one of the essential events in the Spice calendar!

We will then return to the campsite by minibus (included) for the party to continue at the Black Swan beer festival.

Spice 35th Anniversary National Ball Spice has a big National Anniversary Ball every 5 years and the chances are you have heard our 25th and 30th Anniversary Balls were both events that have gone down in Spice history and are still talked about today!

Date: Saturday 01 October 2016 Place: 4* Queens Hotel, Leeds Costs:£79 – early bird ticket Includes: Ball ticket, Welcome Drink Reception, 3 courses plus coffee, ½ bottle of wine per person on table, Live Act on the night, Disco, plus some surprise extras. Deposit: £20 per person Accommodation: Available all details are on the website

Spice UK is proud to present the Spice 35th Anniversary National Ball! This will be a truly fabulous night with loads of fun surprises, and a great celebration of all that Spice represents. The Anniversary Ball is at the iconic venue The 4* Queens Hotel in the vibrant city of Leeds. The Hotel was purpose built accommodation for rail travelers and it couldn’t be better located right in the heart of the city with its own entrance straight off Leeds Central station - why bother to bring the car! The bedrooms are all well-appointed and we have Ball weekend accommodation for 1 night (Sat night only) as well as the Friday and Sunday nights if you want to make a real weekend of it! Go on what’s stopping you? The Queens Hotel in Leeds is a beautiful art deco period building and when we saw it we immediately thought of a great theme for the evening! So the theme of the 35th Anniversary Ball will be ‘The Roaring 20’s!’. Think Flappers, gangsters, prohibition (don’t worry it won’t be a dry bar!), straw boaters and you get the gist – the possibilities are endless. And if you’re worried about being the only one dressed up for the night don’t be as all Spice Coordinators and Helpers (and there will be plenty of them) will be adopting the theme! But if you prefer then of course formal ball attire is perfectly acceptable.

Arrive to a Welcome Drinks reception – there will be areas for each group to meet up and join the rest of their group and coordinator. After a little time to mix and mingle it’s time to proceed to the Queens Ballroom with beautifully decorated tables for the main event! Sit back and enjoy a delightful 3 course evening meal plus coffee, ½ bottle of wine on the table per person There will be a live act to which you can party hard and dance the night away before moving on to some fabulous tunes as our Disco takes us into the late evening and early hours. We are still in the planning stages for this weekend so we can’t reveal too much however as those who attended the 25th & 30th balls know, you should expect a few other special ‘Extras’ to add to the whole evening. We will also be raising money on the night for charity so there will be a raffle on the night which we hope you will join in with. Spice Yorkshire will be putting on a number of events over the weekend including a meal on the Friday evening if you want to get to meet some of the early Spice arrivals! We are really excited about this event and can’t wait to share the evening with you! What are you waiting for, get it booked and let the good times roll…

REMEMBER you need to book your accommodation and Ball ticket separately so don’t forget to do both! Spice Weekend Terms and Conditions apply. Your money is protected via our trust account. Balance payable 15 August 2016, No refunds after this date unless we resell all slots.

Highlighted Holidays This holiday town is located in a valley basin at the rear of the Ziller Valley, against the scintillating backdrop of the Zillertaler Alps. Its surrounding valleys form the passageways to the spectacular mountain world which will be our playground. It is here that some of the best hiking trails in Austria lead you through a range of diverse landscapes within the Tirolean’s mighty mountains. We will find ourselves hiking through the most picture-postcard areas from our idyllic base in Mayrhofen.

ANDALUCIA HIGHLIGHTS 8 days, Saturday 02 July 16 from £799 Departs London Gatwick & Manchester La “Costa Tropical” (the Tropical Coast) is situated to the west of Málaga and runs along the shoreline of the province of Granada for more than 100 kms. It’s filled with picturesque beaches, cosy coves and charming little towns and villages.

From the valley floor to the highest summits we are simply enchanted and whether we are walking around the sides of valleys or summiting a magnificent peak, once again we will maximise our mojo. Combining this scenic destination are two traditional Austrian hotels where after an eventful day you can relax in the finish sauna, aroma steam bath, infra-red cabin and relaxation room. The tasty regional specialties will no doubt tickle our fancy along with delicious desserts and good wines and beer at the bar.

The Costa Tropical is blessed with a subtropical microclimate and its average annual temperature is 20º and has around 320 days of sunshine per year. This privileged climate has helped the fertile plains and gentle slopes that rise up from the beach to grow all kinds of tropical fruit, which is the one the most important economic resources in the area. There is also some tourism and some foreigners have settled in the area, but it has not happened in the massive way as it has done in the “Costa del Sol” to the other side of Málaga. There is still a Spanish atmosphere about the Costa Tropical, and it’s only a short distance away from locations as special as the Alpujarras (Sierra Nevada), the last Moorish stronghold on the Iberian Peninsula or Granada with its world famous Alhambra. Far from being overcrowded, the Costa Tropical is still an ongoing discovery, and the locals are hospitable and generous with visitors.

WALKING AUSTRIA 8 days, Saturday 10 September 16 from £869 Departs London Heathrow & Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham & Edinburgh This annual trip with Walkwise to the Alp’s is sure to be another major success. This new venue to the famous resort of town of Mayrhofen in Austria, offers an exceptional base from which to build our hiking tour.

CROATIAN CHILLOUT 8 days, Tuesday 20 September 16 from £679 Departs London Gatwick, Manchester & Birmingham We have been looking to visit Croatia with a chillout holiday for some time and with this trip we thing we have something of great value and a little bit of fun too! Staying on the island of St Andrew just of the coast of the town of Rovinj we will enjoy the facilities of the lovely 4* Hotel Istra and although it is on it’s own island you are by no means cut off. The hotel runs a scheduled daily ferry service between 6am and 12.30am every hour and it’s free for guest in the hotel! And don’t worry; it only takes 15 minutes to cross!

quiet side of Lanzarote. The wonderful thing about it apart from the hot sun is all the free sports you can learn - it’s endless. This is a self catering break so no food is included and a feature of the holiday are the informal group nights out in local restaurants.

LAKE GARDA AUTUMN CHILLOUT 6 days, Sunday 09 October 16 from £549 Departs London Stansted & Manchester Repeated once again after huge success in recent years! The sheer splendour of Italy’s largest lake is legendary. Charming waterside resorts and villages lie sheltered by a stunning backdrop of mountain scenery. Enjoying a mild climate, Lake Garda has a unique charm that has captivated visitors for centuries, offering something for everyone.

LAPLAND ADVENTURE & NORTHERN LIGHTS

The hotel is located in the town of Garda which is set on the eastern side of the lake in an ideal location enabling easy exploration of the surrounding countryside. We have received excellent feedback from previous Spice members who have enjoyed our Lake Garda offers in previous years and with the hope of warm Autumn sunshine October is a great time to visit.

Finland in winter is a magical experience. A scenic winter wonderland located deep inside the Arctic Circle. Blanketed in snow from December to April, reindeer far outnumber people here, and snow-laden trees form bizarre sculptures in a vast and silent landscape.

8 days, Sunday 04 December 16 from £883 Departs London Gatwick, Manchester & Bristol

At night the mesmerising Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) can shimmer in the moonlight (not guaranteed – unfortunately not even Spice can do that!). By day there are exhilarating reindeer, husky and snowmobile safaris. For some visitors the months of December and January are the most evocative, when the blue twilight of ‘Kaamos’ envelops the arctic landscape and days pass in a palette of rose-coloured dawns and dusks. Days in the Arctic Circle are shortest from early December to mid-January. On this trip as well as our included activities and the must have snowball fights and walks, if you fancy something a little bit different from the usual ski resorts, why not try skiing in Finland (Lapland) for truly inspirational landscapes.

LA SANTA SPORTS HOLIDAY 8 days, Thursday 13 October 16 from £529 Departs London Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham & Edinburgh La Santa is quite simply a brilliant sportsman’s holiday and this will be our 29th consecutive year.

Many people enjoy skiing in Finland because it is completely unspoiled, remaining a firm favourite with skiers who like to get away from it all. Intermediate and Advanced skiers may find the resort a little restrictive in what it offers! all the significant places of interest and what could be better than doing all this at Christmas!

The complex is completely self-contained and situated on the
