My Bit Happy New Year to you all! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas. The Dyserth Christmas party was a great success again and attendance was up on last year. Many thanks to Nigel for his role as Father Christmas. Finally, this event wouldn’t happen if it wasn’t for the support of the kitchen team and the support of so many others. We must thank the Spar Shop for providing a superb Christmas tree for the community hall and thanks go to Amy, Bobby and Nicola for putting it up and decorating it. When you read page 14 you will be as disappointed as I and all those involved in our fight to ensure we secured the return of the High Street bus route. It seems that hollow promises were made! I’m afraid that the first edition of 2018 is starting on a sombre note! You will remember I asked in the last edition if anyone would be willing to take over editorship of this magazine. I am sorry to tell you all that despite my exhaustive efforts to secure a new editor , I have been unable to secure a successor to run the magazine. It is with great sadness that I have to inform you that the next magazine (April/May) will be the last edition. I feel, again and as mentioned in the last edition, that as we now live in Rhuddlan, then editorship should fall to a resident of Dyserth. I would willingly offer continued support such as technical, software issues and preparation for printing. We are not alone as I know that other community publications, including local some magazines, are struggling or ceasing to operate. I took over the reins in 2013 and the on-line colour version was started in 2016. The last magazine will mark my 29th edition . Hilary and I immersed ourselves into the wonderful communities of Dyserth and Cwm. It has been an honour and a pleasure to have been involved, but it is time for us to move on. That said, it’s not the end of my associations with Dyserth and Cwm. I will continue to help with issues related with the environment by supporting the Dyserth Environmental Group and wherever I can assist if requested. It’s not too late to consider taking on the magazine. I have been hearing comments that the amount of time it takes to actually edit and prepare a magazine is exhaustive. It certainly isn’t and I take no more than a few days to prepare it every two months. So, please don’t let time issues deter you. If you are interested, possess some computer and word processing skills and would like to make a positive contribution to Dyserth and Cwm, then please contact me so we can talk about what is needed.

It’s been a dull miserable winter so far and I’m sure like most of you, that the warmth of an early spring can’t arrive too soon. I don’t know about you, but I can take the cold, the snow and the rain, but the winds are quite a different story. I prefer the hazards I can see, unlike wind, which invisibly can cause. So, until the next edition and I still hope it isn’t to be the last, keep warm and well. Richard 3

Horeb United Reformed Church, High Street, Dyserth It is perhaps a little late to wish you all a Happy New Year, but I hope 2018 has begun well for you. Christmas was a very busy time for the church and I would like to thank you all for your support over the festive season. Once again, the Christmas Eve service exceeded expectations with well over 100 people packed into the chapel to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Those who came had fun making a very long Paper Chain which reminded us of how we are all connected not just to each other but to the Christmas Story too. We began 2018 with our Community Lunch and it was great to welcome some new diners as well as old friends. Sadly, due to work commitments, we have had to say goodbye to Clare who has cooked for us since the lunches began in 2015. We have been very fortunate to have had her and hope we can maintain the high standard of cooking that Clare has freely offered. So, thank you Clare, and we wish you well for the future. I am grateful to the growing team of volunteers who we can call upon to help with the preparation and serving of the lunches. They really are Community Lunches and not just something that the church puts on for the village. The next one will be on the 7th Feb. Horeb Chapel is a Fair-Trade church which means that as well as using Fair-Trade tea, coffee and other items we seek to promote the use of Fair-Trade goods wherever possible. The end of February/beginning of March is always Fair-Trade Fortnight when again we will be holding a Fair-Trade event. This will be on Wednesday 28th Feb from 10am – 4pm. Why not come along to sample some Fair-Trade food and see what it is all about. We will also have a Fair-Trade stall at the Lent Lunches which begin at 12 noon on 22nd Feb in St Bridget’s Hall and will continue on Thursdays until the 22nd March. Everyone is welcome to all of these events. It is hard to believe that the next issue of the Dyserth Times will come out around Easter Time at the beginning of April. Hopefully by then the Spring weather will have arrived too, but look out for the services and events that will take place during Lent and as we approach Easter. Keep an eye on our website for all the latest news and information. Rev David Salsbury – Minister of Horeb Chapel. www.dyserthchapel.org.uk Search @horebchapel on Facebook

ST BRIDGET’S PARISH CHURCH The amended timings for the Christmas Eve service proved a success with very many more parishioners able to attend. After the festive season there has been something of a lull in church activities outside of the usual services. However we have a meeting before the end of January to plan this year's programme. The Cytun programme of five Lunches during Lent, organised in succession by one of chapels and church of the village, will take place in the Church Hall starting on Thursday, 22nd of February. Details will be given on the posters about the village as will, eventually, be the programme of the churches' activities and, of course, in the invaluable Dyserth Times. As always we welcome anyone at our normal church services. Keith Sanderson.

We’re on the move!!

NSPCC

It is with great sadness we have to announce that we have to leave our home of 14 years in February! The shop has been very good to us, and allowed us to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for NSPCC, all of which has stayed here in North Wales funding many projects for child protection and assisting in the running of child line in Prestatyn at our family service centre! We are looking forward now, and Keith Williams has allowed us to use his garage opposite in the high street until our new premises is ready in Thomas Avenue! We are very grateful and excited at the prospects of having much more space and easy parking for customers, and serving the village once again! We are lucky enough to have 55 wonderful ladies and one handsome young man Michael (Tuesday afternoon) all of whom volunteer each week. Dyserth fundraising group is part of Flintshire and Denbighshire NSPCC branch, and with their help the branch became the fourth top fundraisers for NSPCC in the UK. Quite an achievement!! Our move will be a big wrench and we all have fond memories of previous businesses prior to us. Alan and his team in “Sam Jones” Grocers, and Glyn before him in his father and grandfathers founding business of “Sam Jones”, a long time ago and happy days. One important thing we couldn’t have done it without you. Your support has been second to none and we hope that will continue when we move!! We can’t thank you enough! In the meantime any donations of goods will still be gratefully received at our temporary shop across the road! Finally we need to say Thankyou to our ladies who made all the wreaths and posies at Christmas raising £1,260, and to the ladies who organised the raffles and tombolas and raised well over £1,000. We must also thank the ladies who go to auctions for us and also check out our many books to raise vital funds and also the busy knitters, jam makers and chutney makers!!” You all know who you are! Thank you all so much for being such fantastic volunteers!!!

DYSERTH & DISTRICT FIELD CLUB The lecture on the North Wales Hospital proved to be very entertaining since as well as a description of the circumstances of its foundation as what was then called a lunatic asylum and the many subsequent additional buildings the speaker showed several photographs of a great variety of activities and social events involving both patients and staff as well as some local people. It evoked many happy and some sad memories from the audience.. The once magnificent buildings are now empty and in decline with a very uncertain future. The next event was a walk around the twin villages of Holt and Farndon which are on opposite sides of a Grade 1 listed bridge spanning the Dee which here forms the boundary between Wales and England. The bridge of red sandstone is probably of the 15th Century and having crossed it back into Wales from the carpark the route went along the river bank, through fields and the outskirts until the remains of the castle were reached. Originally dating from the late 13th century and of pentagonal plan it stood on a 40 foot high promontory surrounded by a wide circular moat. It was slighted after the Civil War following a nine month siege but now forms an excellent picnic site after major clearance and restoration work in the last few years. Each village has a church dedicated to St Chad and both were visited – the Farndon one being very busy with a ‘best decorated Christmas tree’ competition with about forty trees. Tea and cakes followed in one of the numerous listed buildings many of which are using stones from the castle. After Christmas a walk explored some of the history of Prestatyn reaching up to the Hillside Gardens with good views over the town. After viewing the Roman Helmet sculpture the party descended passing the Nant Mill duckpond - complete with a kingfisher - to the site of Prestatyn Castle and then back to the town to see the former police and fire stations. Most recently the Club enjoyed an afternoon of two short talks by members – both scientists in chemistry and botany respectively - who spoke most interestingly about the lives of Sir Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin. Before the next issue of the Dyserth Times appears the 107th Annual General Meeting of the club will have taken place followed immediately by afternoon tea and a social afternoon with quizzes, displays and stalls selling books and produce. On February 10th a walk exploring Denbigh is planned followed by a lecture on the 24th about the Alyn and Chwiler valleys. In March the crocus lawns at Lawnt will be visited on the 10th and the Anniversary Lecture on the 24th will be about ‘The Limestone Quarries of Penmon‘ which supplied the stone for both the Menai Bridges. Everyone will be very welcome at all these events which the Club very much hopes will attract new members. If you wish to join the Field Club or need any other information please contact the Secretary on 01745 336456. Information about the Club and details of the programme appear on the Dyserth website under ‘Organisations’. Give it a try! D S Richards. .

Since 2013 Dyserth Environmental Group has been producing a Heritage Trail leaflet about our village. Initially it was available at several places around the village but for the last few years it has only been available from the New Inn, the telephone kiosk at Trecastell and online at www.dyserth.com. We print the leaflet ourselves so it can be updated as required; we’re now on version 9. (to date I’ve printed 5,740).

In October we received an invitation from TrailTale, an App company based in London, to have our Heritage Trail included in their App for Mobile Phones and Tablets. I compiled the information – which also required map references, walking directions and lots of photographs – and sent it off to TrailTale in December. On January 3rd 2018 Dyserth was added to the App, which at the time of writing only includes walks in London, Saffron Walden and – Dyserth! The App can be downloaded from Google Play or from the Apple App Store. Unfortunately it is currently incompatible with Apple IOS-11 but I hope that will be fixed by the time you read this. Stretching with Mindfulness People think of stretching muscles as pulling an elastic band. As you put more force on the muscle it stretches and gets longer. WRONG! Excess force on a tense muscle may lead to injury. A study in the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies showed that yoga can cause injury in a significant number of people. Now I am not against yoga, far from it, I recommend that my patients go to a yoga class, but they should practice with a teacher who is experienced in working with injuries. If a muscle is tight, it is tight for a reason; it may be trying to protect an inflamed joint or it may be protecting itself so that damaged fibres can repair. Excess force on such a muscle may stimulate it to become more tense, shorter and, at worst, cause it to tear away from the bone.

In the long term, muscles can get into the habit of tension. The original problem may be cured but the muscle’s protective function remains. In fact, the tension now becomes a problem, putting pressure on joints it covers. Chronic muscular tension may lead to serious conditions like arthritis of the hip. So short term muscle tension has a protective function, but chronic muscle tension can lead to more serious injuries. We want to leave short term tension alone, but we want to get rid of chronic tension. However, forceful stretching can make things worse. So, what do we do? Gentle Stretching with Awareness I give people a set of simple yoga stretches for their low back and I tell them to stop and rest as soon as they feel their muscles begin to lengthen. There should be no sense of pain or forcing. Resting in the position of minimal stretch, they should start to breathe deeply. As they breathe, the rib cage and abdomen expand and contract. This rhythmical movement imparts a gentle massage to the muscles in the back. Muscles treated like this will relax and lengthen naturally and more easily than muscles forced to stretch. To improve the quality of this stretch it can be helpful to apply mindfulness. This means exploring the quality of how it feels around the stretching muscle. Be interested! Make micro movements into and out of the stretch; observe how the quality of sensation changes. This Focussing the mind with a gentle interested awareness can improve the healing in your body immensely. When you try to force a muscle to stretch you are exerting mind over matter and this creates a false mind/body separation. Mindful stretching is working mind in matter or mind with matter. It is a coming together of mind and body and consequently is more likely to result in healing. Steve Massey

Reported Criminal Offences in Dyserth: continued. The Council were advised that during the month preceding Christmas, there were 52 recorded incidents in the Dyserth area, including a mountain rescue, which involved the use of a helicopter. The Police together with Denbighshire County Council, were arranging pre driving assessments for the over 65 age group. The following matters were discussed with PCSO Jones. (1) Vehicle concerns in Cwm Road – whereby PCSO Jones was provided with further details (2) Speeding traffic in a number of areas, in particular, Waterfall Road. The concern related to the junction with Weavers Lane – with traffic endeavouring to enter Waterfall Road. Parked cars in this area were also a concern, which reduced visibility.

Matters Discussed with County Councillor David Williams: Councillor David Williams advised the Council in relation to the present Denbighshire Local Development Plan and in particular, an anomaly, in the LDP between the Community areas of Dyserth and Cwm. Councillor Williams has requested a site meeting between County Council Officers. speeding traffic, in general (b) erection of a building in the area of Bryn Felin. Councillor Williams will contact the planning Department (c) Blocked drains in the area of the Wesleyan Chapel (d) Flooding on Newmarket Road (e) Volume of traffic in the area of Four Crosses (f) buses ‘parking up’ on Waterfall Road – causing inconvenience (g) tree blocking public footpath – from the Old Cross Keys to Old School area.

Adoption of Footpaths: Following a two year period since a request by Dyserth Community Council, seeking that Denbighshire County Council, place on the Definitive Map, footpath numbers: 30, 31 and 32 – in the area of Dyserth Waterfall. Following the display of public notices in newspapers and in the area of the Waterfall, the County received no objections to the footpaths being entered on the definitive map. No parking Signage: Following a number of complaints in relation to vehicles parking across the footpath areas, in particular, the perimeter area of the St. George’s Field – which also resulted in annoyance and inconvenience to mobility and wheelchair users. New no parking / dim Parcio signage has been erected. The Council trust, that drivers will park their vehicles in a more sensible manner in the future. First Responder Scheme in Dyserth: Following the calling of a public meeting in the Community Hall, to ascertain the interest by residents of Dyserth, in setting up a First Responder Scheme - unfortunately, no-one attended the meeting. In attendance at the meeting, were personnel from the Welsh Ambulance Service, together with a Councillor from Dyserth Community Council. The Ambulance personnel were present to advise in relation to the scheme, including the first aid training which would have been provided. Cont. on page 14

Application for Financial Support and Donations: The Community Council welcome applications from the Community (Committees, Groups) for financial support. However, the application must be from a bone fide group, or committee, that at least one or more of the Councillors’ are aware of. There are strict guidelines that the Community Council must adhere to, when considering and granting financial support. Financial support is also granted to organisations and charitable institutions outside the Council area, but these applications must in some way benefit the Community. Further details in respect of applying for financial support from the Community Council, or any other financial information, can be obtained from the Clerk and Financial Officer - as per the contact details below.

In the last few days I have been contacted by Peter Daniels who is responsible for public transport in Denbighshire. He met with the managing director of Arriva last week and was told that Arriva would not reinstate their bus service to upper Dyserth. This is despite the planned improvements to the High Street which are scheduled for early this summer. He told Peter that the current bus service was proving more efficient and profitable for Arriva, and no matter what improvements are made to the High St. the bus service to upper Dyserth will not resume. I honestly don’t believe that they will change their minds on this issue no matter how much we might protest, and in the light of this latest change of mind to return when traffic congestion was reduced I would not like to trust anything they might say anyway. I would stress however that the improvements to the High Street are unaffected by this news. Peter Daniels has also told me that the current bus services to and from Dyserth that he organised last year will continue as usual, and may even be improved slightly if he can do so within budget. Following several expressions of concern from residents I have requested a site meeting on St Asaph Road with PCSO Alex Jones and Denbighshire Highways department. Whereas there is little that can be done about car parking here or in many other areas of our village, there is a definite hazard with parked vehicles on the bend here, forcing traffic to drive on the wrong side of the road on a blind bend. It is hoped that something can be done to improve visibility here and Alex Jones and I will be pushing for something to be done as soon as possible. My colleague and Community Councillor Dave Parry has kindly cleared some footpath obstructions at various locations over the last few months. Dave has a keen interest in wildlife and he tends to deal with footpath and wildlife issues in the community on my behalf. As usual there are other matters being dealt with and occasionally some confidential issues that residents have asked me to look into. As always I am available at any reasonable time to discuss any issues that residents may be concerned about. Dyserth WI. January 2018 for Dyserth WI saw a rerun of Christmas 2017! The December weather may have resulted in the postponement of our Christmas Party but undeterred members refused to miss out on their Christmas buffet and used the January meeting instead to celebrate in style with fine food, entertainment and the now famous Twelve Days of Christmas. The weather may have deterred us from meeting for our party but it did not stop us hosting the Offa Group Carol Service at St Bridget’s. The small number of members able to attend ensured a warm welcome for visitors and a hearty ‘choir’ for the carols. Our thanks are extended to Canon Robert Rowlands who not only lead us through the service but also turned his hand to playing the organ….who says its only women who can multi task!

The forthcoming year will continue to be full of fun and friendship with a varied diet of speakers, trips, meals out and involvement in the Dyserth community activities. We already have a much anticipated educational trip planned which will see us travelling over to Liverpool to view the Terracotta Army, a once in a lifetime opportunity for members. Our first theatre visit was in January to Venue Cymru to sing and dance along with the cast of Mamma Mia and there are plans for a trip to a musical based on the songs of Dusty Springfield [The Son of a Preacher Man] later in the year. During 2018 we intend to have other theatre trips to Venue Cymru, Theatr Clwyd and the refurbished Pavilion Theatre in Rhyl Along with our main monthly meetings we will continue with our smaller groups: Knit and Natter, Singing and Craft groups. Members of Dyserth WI can chose to attend our monthly Institute meeting or if that isn’t enough [!] they can be involved every other week of the month. So another busy and enjoyable year lies ahead. If you would like to join us, you are welcome to attend any of our meetings usually on the second Friday of every month [except August] in Dyserth Community Centre. Come along at 7.15 to get a seat for the meeting which starts at 7.30 pm. Keep up with our activities on Face Book. Just type in Dyserth WI to see pictures and articles about past events and outings or, for further information contact Anne Sanderson (President) on 01745 859526. PCSO Alex Jones wishes everyone a happy New Year 2018. The past 2 month have gone fairly smoothly with only minor incidents in and around Dyserth reported to the police, which I am very pleased about. New Cupper with a Copper will be set up shortly and Posters with time, date and location will advertised shortly. Until then, please feel free to contact me on Alexandra.jones@nthwales.pnn.police.uk or mobile: 07768038842

Nature Corner. Dyserth Environmental Group have been busy this winter. Last year numerous Swift nest boxes were installed in various locations in the village, now it’s time to help the Owls! David Parry told me: “We have so far put up three Tawny Owl boxes around the village in the last 3 weeks. The Owls are setting out territories this time of year and so will be looking for nest sites. The Dyserth Environmental group with the support of Denbighshire countryside services are involved with fixing these and many other types of nest boxes, mainly in the Gibbs' wood area. The D.E.G are going to involve pupils from Ysgol Hiraddug in assembling the smaller boxes and painting and numbering them, we will then put them up and monitor their usage in the Spring, again involving the local school children. The 3 boxes were made by Meifod in Denbigh who employ people with learning difficulties In the last magazine I mentioned that I suspected a cold winter was on the cards. This prediction, though not calculated by any scientific knowledge I may have, has proved correct. The early December snows has heralded a long period of cold and as we now have come to expect, windy weather. Luckily, there have been milder periods where the ground is soft allowing birds to ground feed. However, every extra bit of help we can give is important, so please top up your feeders regularly, preferably with high protein foods and ensure fresh water is available too. Around the villages the birdlife will be preparing for spring. However even now a spectacular small bird that can been seen in area, the Goldcrest. They can be seen where fir trees grow and Marion Cwm is a great place to spot them. If you would like a precise location, then please contact me. Soon we will be hearing the Chiiffchaffs and already the Great Spotted Woodpeckers and Jays are a regular sight on the Dyserth - Prestatyn walkway. So much going on and more to come, so get out there and enjoy. Roll on Spring. Richard.
