My Bit I start with the sad news of the loss of Eddy Townsend. Eddy immersed herself into so many aspects of Dyserth life and that of Trelawynd too. We will always remember Eddy’s tireless work with the NSPCC, but in many other ways such as providing plants for us all to buy and enjoy each spring. Our sincere condolences and our thoughts go to Phil and family. Congratulations to County Councillor David Williams on being elected to continue his role. We all know how hard David worked on behalf of the village regarding the Arriva village bus issue. It is hoped that this situation may be resolved by proposed traffic improvements in the High Street. The village has indeed been fortunate for the daily shuttle service which was swiftly brought into service when Arriva removed their High Street section of the route. Arriva have studied the plans and stated that if the alterations to the High Street are achieved as per plans, then they will return the service. Much more on this in Cllr. Williams submission on page 18. It’s getting near to the Summer and the events are starting to take shape. July 1st is Community Day, yes this really is the 4th year!! Once again the Dyserth Times Scarecrow competition will be happening, In fact we were heartened that residents were asking when the next one would be. This year the theme is “Characters from Pixar Films”. Anyone you like really from Toy Story to Monsters Inc. and A Bugs Life to The Incredibles! In fact there are 17+ films to choose from. As usual there are prizes for the 3 Scarecrows judged the best by the public vote on Community Day. See page 12 for full details.

Who remembers the Trangaloon? A Correction!

You will remember in the last edition I wrote about the “Trangaloons” and stated that the name was coined by Richard (Ricky) Morgan in approximately 1956. Well, Dorothy Jones has told me that this information is wrong! Dorothy said “Until I was about 4 years old I lived with my parents in Weavers Lane. My mother told me that I was a cross child and one of the things that would pacify me was having my cousin to push me up and down Weavers Lane in his Trangaloon. I am now in my 86th year, so Mr Morgan the word “Trangaloon” was known quite a few years before you coined the word!” That’s the problem with Wiki! Or as Donald Trump would tweet #fakenews  There is nothing to report on the Cae Fyddion LDP Development proposals and we wonder if there has been some reconsidering of the situation! The land went on sale last September. The Meliden development was refused planning permission. Some news though about the Gravity Rock proposals on Hiraddug Mountain (Toboggan run etc.). I have been informed by the developers that “This venture is not something we are currently pursuing ”. Finally, our wonderful dog Jasper left us a few weeks ago after 13 years and joined his doggy mates already departed. Only a dog owner will understand the sadness a dog owner feels when they lose their loyal friend. We would like to thank everyone for their kind words and support. Richard

Horeb United Reformed Church, High Street, Dyserth Highlights from the previous couple of months include the 90 th Anniversary Service and Tea, our Easter services and, at the end of April, the annual Village Quiz. Relating to the latter, congratulations to the team from the Community Library who just edged it for the Peter Morgan Shield but well done to everyone who took part. Particular thanks must go to Allan Morgan – our quizmaster, and to everyone else to helped make for an enjoyable evening. Staying with the Quiz theme, if you are a fan of puzzles, quizzes and the like then why not pop into Paterson Hall on Wednesday mornings and pick up a copy of The Weekly Quiz set by Allan. It costs just £1 to enter and prizes are awarded to winning entries. At the same time you can grab a cup of tea or coffee, purchase your fruit and veg and other items that we have to offer (take your chance – it changes every week!) and have a natter in a really friendly atmosphere. Looking ahead to June we will be holding our annual Garden Party at Glanrafon, Pandy Lane. This will be held on Saturday 24th June starting at 2pm. The theme for the party this year is Around the World in 80 Cakes. Entrance, which costs £4 for adult, £2 for children or £10 for a family ticket will include a cup of tea or juice, plus a sample of 3 cakes from different parts of the world. There will also be the usual stalls including Plants, Nearly New, more Cakes, Ice Cream and a Raffle. There will be competitions and games for the children and entertainment provided by Gwaenysgor Community Choir. We look forward to seeing you there. Details of our regular activities and other news can be found on our website. We meet for worship at 9.30 each Sunday morning. This is a service to which everyone is invited – you would be made very welcome. Rev David Salsbury – Minister of Horeb Chapel. www.dyserthchapel.org.uk

CWM PARISH CHURCH The Annual Church Meeting took place in April, and we were sorry that our Secretary for many years, Mrs Diana Baxter felt that now is the time for her to relinquish the post. We are grateful for all the hard work she has done over the years, thank her most sincerely, and wish her a happy retirement ! We are glad that Diana has said that she will still support Cwm Church and be involved in the life of the parish as much as possible. We thank Mrs Maryon Hughes for taking over as Acting Secretary. We are also without a Treasurer at this time, as Mr Mike Jones has now moved to Cheshire. We thank him for all that he has done over the years, and look forward to seeing him from time to time. If anyone feels that they would be able to help us with this task in the coming months, then please email the Vicar, Canon Robert, on canonrobert83@gmail.com , for further information

We have two services a month in Cwm - Holy Eucharist on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month at 11.15hrs. It is a lovely quiet service, but sadly we only have a faithful few who attend these days, and would be grateful for any support that readers might feel able to give us. We are at the moment exploring new ways of being the church in the village, so watch this space in the coming months. Continued……..

The Parish Church of St. Bridget’s Since the last edition of the Dysrth Times the village branch of Cytun has held a series of frugal lunches each Thursday in Lent in St. Bridget's Church Hall by the Waterfall Gardens. This cooperative effort by the churches in the village raised over £500 for Christian Aid and the lunches were also pleasant social occasions for those from the village who attended. We have also held a very successful Come and Buy sale and thanks are due to those who made this possible and those who supported this most successful event. On Saturday , 24th of June there will be an exhibition of photographs taken by Peter Williams at a coffee morning in the Church Hall. On Friday, 14th July the Summer Raffle will be drawn. The first prize is £100 and there are many other valuable prizes. The event starts at 7pm for 7.30 pm. Dyserth Community Council Mrs. Ann Parry – a former resident of Dyserth attended a meeting of the Council to discuss a possible information board being sited within the grounds of the Dyserth Memorial area. Mrs. Parry in her capacity as a Member of the Flintshire War Memorials Committee, has presently been collating details in relation to a number of War Memorials in Denbighshire, including the Dyserth Memorial. The present information collated for the Dyserth Memorial was in relation to the fallen in WW1 – and Mrs. Parry was seeking the views of the Council Members, in purchasing an information board for the Memorial - whereby the information would be on public display. Further information in relation to the fallen during WW2 will be carried out in the future. The Councillors’ agreed, in principle, to provide financial assistance for an information board to be placed in the area of the Dyserth War Memorial. Councillor Mrs. Margaret Williams, together with the Clerk, will be the Council’s representatives and liaise with Mrs. Ann Parry. Dyserth Community Council – Election of New Members Apart from the County Council election for Dyserth that was held on Thursday the 4 th May, there was no call for an election for the Dyserth Community Council. Whilst a number of existing Councillors retired, only one resident placed their name forward as a candidate – hence no election. The Denbighshire Electoral Returning Officer, advised the Council, that they could co-opt three new Council Members within a period of time following the election date. The procedure following an uncontested election, is different from a Casual Vacancy position. At the May Council meeting, three new Council Members were co-opted, but will not take their seat as Councillors until the June Council meeting. A report on the new Council Members, will be featured in the next edition of the Dyserth times. Matters advised by and reported to County Councillor David Williams (a) tree in Maes Glas had been felled and replaced (b) fence and posts in Weavers Lane, had still not been painted – despite the County agreeing to it during the summer of 2016 – Councillor David Williams will discuss with County Hall (c) continuing concerns with overweight lorries using Waterfall Road. The Clerk advised that the Police and VOSA had taken action against a number of drivers. Councillor Williams, reiterated, that instances of overweight lorries have to be reported to the Police – together with the vehicle number if possible. North Wales Police – Reported Criminal Activities in Dyserth PCSO Richard Williams advised the Council Members in relation to the following reported criminal offences: (1) Hiraddug Road – reports of youths throwing stones towards properties near the Quarry. The owner of the Quarry has been contacted by the Police, and asked to secure the gate leading to the Quarry (2) Road disruption – call in regards to vehicles moving barriers put up by the Council on Upper Foel Road (3) Waterfall Road – reports of a vehicle causing an obstruction – Officers attended and stated it wasn’t causing an unnecessary obstruction at the time ...cont:

DYSERTH & DISTRICT FIELD CLUB The Club completed its 106th year with an anniversary lecture entitled ‘The Rebuilding of the Llangollen Railway’ by Alun Williams with many photographs of its early resurrection and continuing with an account of the recent work to extend the line to Corwen. More remains to be done and future plans were described including the rebuilding of a large GWR freight locomotive in the extensive workshops. The next event had two options, both starting at the car park at Llyn Crafnant. It was a remarkably lovely Spring day with blue sky, very little wind and quite warm. The easier option was a walk around the lake, mostly quite flat with a picnic lunch at the southern end with wonderful views. More energetic members took the more rugged path over Mynydd Deulyn to reach the smaller Llyn Geirionydd again with great views. Both groups eventually finished up at the small lakeside café where it was very pleasant enjoying tea and cakes in the afternoon sunshine. The last lecture of the winter season was on the subject of ‘The Art of Ancient Egypt’ given by Chris Winner and well illustrated with numerous pictures as some aspects of the complicated culture, pharaohs and gods of the era were described. Concluding the winter programme was a walk re-visiting Tan y Gopa woodland above Abergele following a similar route of a winter walk enjoyed at the end of 2015. The advent of Spring had transformed the area with masses of bluebells, other flowers and a few birds. Although a bit chilly a picnic lunch was enjoyed and unusually for the Club the walk was enlivened by the welcome presence of two grandchildren of members – maybe future members! Brief details of the Summer Programme are given below but the first event will have passed by the time this appears. May 20th Walk at Aber Falls. June 3rd Excursion to Hawkstone Follies. June 17th Visit & Walk - Fort Belan, Nature Reserve & Aviation Museum. July 1st Excursion to Dolgellau, Cymer Abbey & Glasdir Copper Mine. July 15th Walk at Gronant Dunes and Big Pool Wood. July 29th Visit & Walk – Llangernyw Church, H Jones Museum & Hafodunos. August 12th Excursion to Gawsworth Hall & St James’ Church. th August 26 Walk – Pennant Country September 9th Excursion to Valle Crucis, Horseshoe Falls & Plas Newydd, Llangollen. September 23rd Walk at Ellesmere, Shropshire. October 7th Visit &Walk – Plasglasgwm 16C Farmhouse, Penmachno Further details are available on the Dyserth website under ‘Organisations’ as well as on local posters and in the libraries. Non-members are welcome at all events – the walks are free and there is a £1 fee for excursions in addition to the coach fare but if you wish to join the Club the annual subscription is £14 which gives access to all events, Summer and Winter Programme leaflets and a copy of the Club’s annual Proceedings, which describes the events in full detail with lists of the flora and fauna seen on the walks. For information about the Club and its activities phone the Secretary on 01745 335456. WE WOULD LIKE MORE MEMBERS – PLEASE GIVE US A TRY!

Can you help? My name is Sharon Philp. I am the daughter of an ex-student of Mia Hall, North Wales; my father’s name is George Ennis (born 29/7/1939). I know this is a huge long shot but I am not too sure where to start. My father is photographed (attached) with his best mate, John Grey (also a student at Mia Hall in the mid 1950s). My father lives in Sydney now and before he gets much older (he is about to turn 78), one of his wishes is to find his best mate. I am trying to help him out. I am wondering whether you may have some records or know of any family/friends that may be still in the area? Any guidance at all would be appreciated. Thank you so much, Sharon Philp—Australia

Nature Corner. So, who went down to the woods recently spurned on by Dave Parry’s excellent Facebook post? Many did just that and enjoyed listening to the evening chorus filling the air in the woods near Cwm. Being an insomniac, I usually listen to the dawn chorus, so I enjoy hearing it whilst drinking my first cuppa of the day! Being awake that early in the spring is ok, but down right annoying in the depths of winter! Then there are the Bluebells giving a wonderful display this year. Shame the magazines in B&W, as I cannot reproduce the carpet of flowers captured by local resident Joe Roberts. In fact our Facebook page has regular wildlife posts shared by residents. This spring has certainly woken up early, the blossoms were out at least a month earlier than normal. I always associate the blossoms with the arrival of high April winds which usually sees the blossom off. The weather, although mostly glorious, has been generally cold and more importantly very dry! Along with the extremely dry winter our birds will need a helping hand. Please just put water out somewhere safe from our marauding feline friends. Also, birds have been fledging early and many of the arrivals from distant shores arrived early. Keep up with the fat balls please, the higher energy content the better as is the case with all bird foods. Plenty of Dipper’s and Grey Wagtails about, both at the waterfalls and on the Ffyddion from Anglia and right through the village. The juvenile Dippers and Wag tales can be seen feeding from the adults and makes a fascinating sight.

those who wish to see their glorious colouration, then pop onto our electronic version of this magazine by scanning the code on the front page of this magazine.

However and for me the highlight of the spring so far ,has been the arrival of the Yellowhammers. Plenty in numbers, they can be seen in the hedgerows around Marian Cwm, best in early morning. What an absolutely stunning bird and a sighting that had eluded me until this year. For

Goldcrests are in abundance in Marian Cwm. Why not take a trip to the North Wales Wildlife Trusts “Big Pool Wood” Reserve near Gronant, accessed by the Bridlewood Riding Centre. Don’t forget either as I mentioned in the last edition, the Gronant Dunes are alive with the Skylarks, Stonechats and many, many others. The latest news on the Swifts is that they are flying around Dyserth and hopefully we will see one in a nest box soon. Last week, exactly a year to the day and after flying thousands of miles from Africa, they arrived to nest in the eves of our house. How lucky are we! So, keep a look out and enjoy our nature. Richard

Diet for Stronger Bones - Calcium Sources The importance of keeping your bones strong is common knowledge; you have to keep them strong and healthy to reduce the risk of fractures, injuries, and bone diseases such as osteoporosis. However, not everyone knows which foods are good for their bones or what the best vitamin D and calcium sources are, both of which are essential for achieving optimal bone health. This is also important if you are already diagnosed with osteoporosis because, according to experts, eating calcium-enriched foods can enhance the effects of the osteoporosis medicine you are taking. Good calcium sources. There are a lot of foods that contain calcium, so boosting your bone health is not such a difficult task. Below is a list of foods you can find in your own kitchen or at the supermarket. Dairy products such as lowfat or non-fat milk, yogurt, and cheese. If you are lactose intolerant, you can opt for soy milk instead. Dairy products are rich in calcium which can be easily absorbed by our bodies, compared to other calcium sources. As for soy milk, soy has phytoestrogen, which promotes calcium absorption. Soy milk also has other nutrients such as fatty acids, fibre, and protein. 2.Canned sardines, salmon, mackerel, and tuna These are filled with calcium and omega-3 fatty acids, which not only strengthen the bones, but also reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. 3. Green and leafy vegetables such as spring green, spinach, kale, okra, broccoli, etc. Green, leafy vegetables provide a lot of nutrients other than calcium that can keep your bones strong such as vitamin K and folate, and they are easily absorbed by the body. Aside from the ones mentioned above, other foods that are good to keep your bones strong are fortified cereals, tofu, almonds, and calcium-rich fruit juices.

Good Vitamin D Sources From about late March/early April to the end of September, most people should be able to get all the vitamin D they need from sunlight. The body creates vitamin D from direct sunlight on the skin when outdoors, but between October and early March we don't get enough vitamin D from sunlight. Vitamin D is also found in a small number of foods. Sources include: Oily fish – such as salmon, sardines, herring, mackerel and fresh tuna Red meat Liver Egg yolks Fortified foods – such as most fat spreads and some breakfast cereals Knowing the right kinds of food to eat and maintaining a balanced diet is important in preventing osteoporosis. For some people, keeping a certain diet is hard. I suggest that you get creative in making your meals using the foods listed above. You can also go on the Internet and find some good recipes that include vitamin D and calcium-rich foods. Steve Massey St Asaph Chiropractic Clinic 01745 535854

TUESDAY MORNING GROUP Our season ended in March with two contrasting musical mornings, the first by Dr Goronwy Wynne on Mendelssohn, favourite of Queen Victoria. He spent some time in North Wales and we all enjoyed hearing his incidental music for A Summer Night’s Dream and the overtures know as Fingal’s Cave amongst other familiar melodies. The final talk was given by Mr Brian Lewis an was all about Rodgers and Hammerstein and their long association. Judging by the humming and singing contributed by our members this was a popular finale to our series. Next year’s programme, starting on 3rd October, is full of interest. Have a look at our stand on Community Day, 1st July, then join us on Tuesday mornings. Margaret Blott (Hon. Sec)

David Gwyn Williams—County Councillors Report. Firstly I would like to thank all those who voted for me in the recent election, and to assure every elector in Dyserth that I will continue to do my best for the village, as I have done in the last few months since being your county councillor. The exact format of the new council and roles within it is still being discussed. Although all officers and staff remain as before, the actual make up of council cabinet posts and committees etc. is not yet decided. However I would like to make it clear that whatever goes on at county level my priority is and always will be to work for the people of Dyserth. As some of you may know the plans that myself and Denbighshire Highways drew up for the modification of the High Street to alleviate traffic congestion have been accepted by Arriva. They have given us a written assurance that they will re instate the bus service to upper Dyserth if and when these improvements are carried out. The priority when looking at alleviating congestion was always the retention of on street parking, which is essential for the continued success of shops and businesses on the High Street. The plans for consideration will naturally mean some alteration to the layout of parking bays etc. but the majority of spaces will remain. Whereas traffic flow should be much improved, the High Street will still have parked vehicles and it will not become just a race track for commuters.

Prior to any work commencing there will be, and has to be by law, a public consultation. This will be held somewhere in Dyserth and the plans will be on view for anyone to see, and council officers will be available to answer any questions etc. The exact format of this consultation is still being discussed, and so as yet we are not able to give a date for such. However I would hope that within a few weeks everyone in Dyserth will made aware of the date and the venue etc. There have been various other ongoing matters, most of which are in hand. There is still the continued illegal use of Waterfall hill by heavy lorries. If possible please make a note of the registration numbers of any such vehicles you may see, and give these details to our community police officers. Any video or photographic evidence would also help the police to more robustly enforce the weight restriction. Yours sincerely, David Gwyn Williams. Cyfeillion, rhaid i mi dweud diolch yn fawr i bawb am pleidleisio amdanaf fi yn yr etholiad cyngor diweddar. Edrychaf ymlaen i wasanaethu chi a Dyserth am y pum mlynedd nesaf. Dyserth WI. In April we were joined by Derek and Mike [with the wonderful Isaac] who talked to us about guide dogs for the blind. During the month members had an Afternoon Tea at The Beaches Hotel and an entertaining evening at Marks and Spencer's where we were treated to a talk on the history of lingerie, a tasting of new snacks and an optional appointment with the bra measuring service. At the end of the month we fielded two teams in the Annual Dyserth Quiz. Whilst we didn't do quite as well as last year's team we certainly did not disgrace ourselves! In May we voted on the Annual Resolutions (Alleviating Loneliness and Protecting Our Oceans from Micro-plastic) so that Anne (the delegate for our Offa Group) is advised how to vote at the National Annual Meeting which is taking place in Liverpool on 7th June. Of course as well as the important discussion we also had some fun activities including a fashion parade of the fascinators made at the April Craft Group and a very comical gardening quiz. In more sombre mood we thought about our dear friend and long-time member Eddy Townsend - we remembered her in the style that she would have approved with three cheers and a round of applause. Our speakers in June and July are scheduled to tell us all about Erddig Hall and The Samaritans. Members of the Craft Group will be trying their hand at pencil sketching (no previous experience required) and preparing for the Flint and Denbigh Show. The singing group will tackle Tamla Motown songs as well as preparing for their appearance at the Dyserth Community Day on 1st July. Our next theatre trip is to Venue Cymru to see Sister Act followed by Funny Girl and, in 2018, Mamma Mia. On 5th May we had a Dementia Friends Information Session which helped us to dispel some myths and ensured we could be more understanding of those people living with dementia in all its forms. Many members are now committed to be Dementia Friends. If you would like to join us, you are welcome to attend any of our meetings usually on the second Friday of every month [except August] in Dyserth Community Centre. Come along at 7.15 to get a seat for the meeting which starts at 7.30 pm.

Keep up with our activities on Face Book. Just type in Dyserth WI to see pictures and articles about past events and outings or, for further information contact Anne Sanderson (President) on 01745 859526.

DYSERTH BOWLING CLUB -MAY 2017 After a mild and reasonably dry Winter period the bowling surface of the green for Registration and President's Day on the 25th March was exceptionally good and members took part in what proved to be a competitive and enjoyable afternoon. This WAXWING season Dyserth is still managing to run six teams in the various Leagues. The first of the League games took place during the first week of April, fortunately the weather throughout the month proved to be reasonably mild with plenty of sunshine and little rain! After five weeks some good results were achieved in both individual and team efforts with early results showing most teams in mid-table position in their respective Leagues. The Wednesday Mid-week Ladies' Team captained by Jessie Savage, has won four of the five games played, with Julia Evans leading the team averages and lying fourth in the Leagues averages by winning all five of her games. Captained by Chris Jones and in the 'B' Division of the North Wales Coast League, Dyserth won three of the five games played, with one draw, and are third in the League with 36 points. Berwyn Williams leads the averages, having won all five of his games, followed closely by Hazel Griffiths and Mark Davies having won four of their games. Dyserth 'A' Team in the Clwydian Senior Citizens' League in Division 'A' led by Hazel Griffiths has won two, lost three and drawn one of their games, with Mike Barrodale winning all five of his games. Dyserth 'B' Team captained by Alan Jones in Division 'C' have won two of the six games played, with John Bass winning five of his games. Dyserth 'A' in the Vale of Clwyd League 'A' Division, captained by Nick Evans, are having a difficult start to the season by winning just one of the five games played, with Hefin Cunnah, Gary Davies and Edwina Ryvar winning the majority of their games. Dyserth 'B' in Division 'C' led by Mike Briggs are also having a shaky start also winning one of their games, with Gaynor White winning all five of her first five games. Dyserth Junior Football Club - Press Release No.56 – 16th May 2017 With the season coming to an end we look to our Funday & Presentation Day, which this year will be on Sunday 11th June and takes place on the football field and Hiraddug School playing field. All players receive a trophy memento to recognise the efforts put into the current season and there are also a few special awards for ‘Player of the Season’, ‘Players Player’, Managers Player’ etc. We shall list the award winners in the next issue. We had some good football at last year’s event and we hope for more good games this year to entertain us. 3 weeks later on the Dyserth Community Day on Saturday 1st July it will be Registration Day for the next season, 2017-18. This will take place at the Community Hall and Ysgol Hiraddug playing field and we hope to arrange some training sessions on the day. We will put more information on our Facebook page nearer the day. Our Fun Football for u5s has been popular this past winter and those players are now forming the basis of what will be our u6 team for next season. We will endeavour to repeat the exercise this coming season as an introduction to football in the village. Summer training times are as follows; Monday 6.30pm-u16s, Tuesday 5.15pm-u9s, Tuesday 6.00pm-u5+6s, Wednesday 6.30pm-u7s, Thursday 6.30pm–u14s & u15s, Friday 6.30pm–u8s & u10s.
