Star October  WORDS FROM THE DIRECTOR KAYE MONK-MORGAN LET’S CHANGE! The last two mornings have left me wanting more peace and perhaps a little joy, fewer tears and less consternation. Government shutdowns, losses of loved ones, pending credit crisis and other current world and life issues can be a lot to balance. It’s enough to make you want to stay in bed…but Gandhi’s quote, written years ago, calls us to action in times like these. Gandhi challenges us to get up and be the best we can be…he seems to argue that if everyone is intentional about doing just that, things will get better.

What is the change you want to see? Change is brought about by action…what are you doing to bring about change in your life? During the month of September, we were each tasked with writing our academic year goals. SMART Goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-bound), are supposed to help determine our path to change. The month of October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, Stamp Collecting Month, National Arts and Humanities Month, National Cyber Security Awareness Month and National Squirrel Awareness Month, amongst several other designations. For UBMS students, I declare October as Let’s Do It Month. We set goals; now let’s get to work making those goals happen. Let’s change something! Let’s educate ourselves to change political views, let’s study more to change our grades, let’s evaluate relationships to change our connections with friends. Let’s work out more to change our bodies, let’s meditate often to change our minds. Let’s change! ~Mama Morgan “We must be the change we wish to see in the world.” Gandhi

SENIOR SECTION CLASS OF 2014

Meetings ALL UBMS SENIORS… Thank you for You have probably heard this catch phrase countless times before. The phrase, “Just do it,” was inspired by the advertising agency, Wieden and Kennedy during the 1980’s and is now NIKE’s famous trademarked phrase. While the phrase was originally used in the context of sports, it is now applicable to every aspect of our lives. Here we are in the month of October, and many of you are already feeling the pressures of tough classes, difficult teachers, homework, tests, and deadlines. All of this, just to prepare you for what… higher GPAs, increased ACT scores, high school graduation, scholarships, college, future success? YES!!! To get started, we need to design an “Academic Road Map” for each of you. Your first step is to complete your “Student Academic Profile” (SAP) form. If you have not submitted this form yet, please do so or contact me ASAP. I will be posting a fillable form soon. This form is used to determine what your academic needs are and how we can best devise a plan to meet those needs in order to keep you on the right “path”. Your second step is to complete your “Student Goal and Performance Evaluation Plan” (SGPEP). If you have not submitted this form yet, please do so or contact me ASAP. I will also be posting a fillable form soon. This form outlines your three (3) major goals for the academic year. Our intent is to monitor your efforts, provide needed resources, intervene when necessary, and support you in your efforts towards reaching these goals. UBMS is here to help you succeed in school and in life. To do that, you must understand that preparing you academically leads to higher GPAs, which improves your ACT scores, which ensures high school graduation, which enhances your chances for better scholarships, which allows you to attend a college of your choice, and which opens the right doors for your future success. You will find that throughout the course of life, if you want something bad enough, you have to work hard at it. Hard work does pay off, and now is the time to work hard so that you can enjoy the “payoff” later. Seriously though… JUST DO IT!

attending your meeting. Most of you were given things to work on, please complete them as soon as possible.

College Applications ALL COLLEGE APPLICATIONS should be st

submitted by November 1 for best consideration. WSU applications have been submitted for all students planning to participate in UBMS Bridge Experience for summer 2014. Please contact Mrs. Morgan with a copy of your letter from the WSU admissions office, especially if you are denied admissions.

SCHOLARSHIP CONNECTION

Scholarships WHEN LOOKING AT COLLEGE COSTS, many students (and parents) want to know, how much will it cost and is college affordable? College can be affordable. Let’s look at the options, one is federal financial aid that either awards grants and/or student loans; another is money earned in a workstudy program; a student’s personal savings, monies from parent(s) or grandparent(s) and lastly, SCHOLARSHIPS. UBMS often stresses for students to research and find out what is needed before applying. To apply early and apply often as scholarships are added constantly.

HOW DO YOU FIND SCHOLARSHIPS? There are many ways to learn about scholarships, contact the financial aid office at the college you’re planning on attending; your parents employer; location foundations; religious or community organizations (i.e. the Lions Club, NAACP, American Legion); local businesses (i.e., banks, car dealerships, TV stations) and civic groups. UBMS posts scholarships on Facebook on the UBMS Current Student and Participant page. Check it often. But other resources for scholarships are listed below.

Top national scholarships are: 1. Gates Millennium Scholarship 2. Hispanic Scholarship Fund 3. Jackie Robinson Foundation 4. Coca-Cola, Dell, Best Buy, Kohl’s Cares and Target More scholarships can be found on free search sites such as those listed below: 1. Conduct a free scholarship search on a. http://www.scholarships.com/schol arship-search.aspx b. www.fastweb.com c. www.collegegreenlight.com 2. Check out the US Department of Labor’s free search tool http://careerinfonet.org/scholarshipsear ch/ScholarshipCategory.asp?searchtype =category&nodeid=22 3. Search the Kansas Board of Regents at http://www.kansasregents.org/scholars hips_and_grants 4. Or visit www.wichita.edu/outsideschlarships HINT: Don’t talk yourself out of applying. Someone has to win, why shouldn’t it be you? And remember not all scholarships are meritbased. Some are need-based, major-based, talent-based, luck-based and location-based . . . and so on. Scholarships are out there but it will take work. It could be worth it. For example, if a $200 scholarship application takes two hours to complete, and you win, that is equivalent to $100 per hour of your time. Not a bad return. Final note, don’t let insecurity and time stop you from winning “free money.” Source: www.studentsaid.ed.gov; www.scholarships.com and Julie Scott with the WSU Financial Aid Office.

ALL UBMS SENIORS… the deadline for registration to compete for the WSU Distinguished Scholarship Invitational is October 15, 2013. Many of you meet the criteria for invitation (3.5 GPA and 24 ACT.) Please don’t let this opportunity pass you by. This is a $42,000 opportunity! Even if WSU isn’t your first choice, you owe it to yourself to compete and then turn down the $$$$ if you want. Several of you have a great chance of winning top dollars in this competition! Let’s win some!
