Worldwise Calendar 2016

Every precaution has been taken to ensure that the information contained in this calendar is trustworthy and reliable. However, the Worldwise Learning Centre cannot accept responsibility for any inaccuracy.

Welcome to the Worldwise Calendar 2016 The Worldwise Calendar 2016 brings together the winning entries from the 2015 Worldwise Photo Competition. The chosen photos are not only beautiful shots but also give us insights into the culture of the country in which they were taken. The competition attracted many entries, covering a wide variety of subjects including cultural events and celebrations, beautiful landscapes, and other interesting sights from all over the world. The selection above gives you just a flavour of this diversity. The Worldwise Team would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who contributed to the calendar by sharing their ‘worldwise’ experiences. If you have an interesting photograph which you would like to share, why not put it forward for our Worldwise Calendar 2017 - the deadline for entries is 16 October 2016.

Aminah Khan, School of Journalism, Language and Communication Al-Rustaq Fort, Oman “The hospitality of this region hinges on the qahwa and tamr ceremony - coffee and dates. The youngest adult or adolescent of the household is in charge of pouring half a cup of coffee for each of the assembled guests - a full cup is said to be impolite and inauspicious - and handing them out one by one with the right hand. You may ask for more, but three is usually the rule. To signal that you have had enough, you give the cup (finjan) a slight shake as you hand it back to the server.”

Lei Yuanyuan, School of Management Love in Paris, the City of Love, France “This picture was taken on the Pont des Arts Bridge in Paris, France, in June, 2015. Many couples come to the bridge over the Seine in order to write their names on a padlock, called a ‘lovelock’, and fasten it onto the bridge. According to a local saying, love flows like the Seine through Paris. As long as the lock remains fastened, love will endure.”

Naomi Wells, School of Management

Canals and Bikes, Amsterdam, Netherlands

“Amsterdam, with its somewhat scandalous nightlife, is one of the go-to places for many young tourists in 2015. However, once you head to the backstreets ordinary relaxed life takes over with signs from the city’s industrial past all around. Winding streets, rickety bridges and confusing canal rings all becoming part of the unique vibe of the city. The unbelievable number of bicycles astonished me on my visit in September 2015, with statistics showing over 800,000 people use them each day. They even have their own bicycle ports, traffic lights and road ways. A truly revolutionary eco-friendly city with a unique vibe.”

Aitor García Zubiría, School of Engineering Zouk of Essaouira, Morocco

“Essaouira, a port founded by the Portuguese in the 16th century, is today a dynamic, touristic town. Its medina is surrounded by tall fortified walls and is home to many artisans who fill the streets with colour. Seen from outside it could be a town in Europe, but its narrow alleyways and strong, charming aroma of spices are unmistakeably Moroccan. Different cultures have left their mark on Essaouira over the centuries, giving the town a unique mix of European and Arab influences.”

This photo was taken outside the world-famous colosseum, which is also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre. It could hold 80,000 spectators – more than your average football stadium!”

Sonia Bonamassa, Former Worldwise Student Intern Le Panier, Marseille, France “This photo was taken in Marseille in the south of France whilst I was on holiday. “Le Panier” is an ancient part of the city, which fascinates tourists because of its colours and picturesque shops like the one pictured. Artists from the area sell numerous second hand and home-made objects. It’s a popular neighbourhood which reminds me a little bit of Italy but with a French touch.”

Summer Mouallem, School of Journalism, Language and Communication Fisherman’s Boat, Crete, Greece “Crete, Greece’s largest island, is known for its varied terrain, which ranges from fine sandy beaches to the famous White Mountains. Mount Ida, the tallest of the range, is home to the Ideon Cave, which was the birthplace of Zeus according to Greek mythology. The picture represents old Crete, away from the tourist traps, where a fisherman’s boat lies idle, evoking memories of the past.”

Laura Walker, School of Journalism, Language and Communication Market stall, Camagüey, Cuba “This was a very special trip for me, my honeymoon. My new husband and I had for years dreamed of visiting this magical island. One of the most striking things about the cities we visited was seeing the amount of inspirational slogans which adorned even the most unlikely of places. Even at this empty fruit and vegetable stall in the city of Camagüey, there was no escaping the reminders of the country’s revolutionary history.”

Armenians, Arabs, Kurds and Turks all live alongside one another in this ancient town on the banks of the Tigris river. If you travel to this rural and remote part of Turkey, make sure you have a meal and a nice cup of tea in one of the caves. It’s an experience not to be missed.”

Patricio Ignacio Espinoza Arce, School of Journalism, Language and Communication Bagpipes and Kilts, Edinburgh, Scotland “Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland, is the perfect place to find out what being Scottish really means. It is such an amazing city, with stunning architecture, street musicians and bagpipes and kilts everywhere. This picture reflects the beauty I found in the city of Edinburgh. I could really feel the patriotism of people from Scotland, and I understood why they are proud of being Scottish.”
