Worldwise Calendar 2019
Every precaution has been taken to ensure that the information contained in this calendar is trustworthy and reliable. However, the Worldwise Learning Centre cannot accept responsibility for any inaccuracy.
Welcome to the Worldwise Calendar 2019 The Worldwise Calendar 2019 brings together the winning entries from the 2018 Worldwise Photo Competition. The chosen photos are not only beautiful shots but also give us insights into the culture of the country in which they were taken. The competition attracted many entries, covering a wide variety of subjects including cultural events and celebrations, beautiful landscapes, and other interesting sights from all over the world. The selection above gives you just a flavour of this diversity. The Worldwise Team would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who contributed to the calendar by sharing their ‘worldwise’ experiences. If you have an interesting photograph which you would like to share, why not put it forward for our Worldwise Calendar 2020 - the deadline for entries is 13th October 2019.

Danila Datti, School of Language and Global Studies Sacro Bosco, Bomarzo, Italy “The main attraction of Bomarzo, a town located in Central Italy, is a garden called Sacro Bosco (Sacred Grove), also known as Bosco dei Mostri (Monsters’ Grove). It is named after the many larger-than-life sculptures, some sculpted in the bedrock, which populate this predominantly barren landscape. The garden’s arcane symbolism and its surreal nature appeal to and inspire artists and writers from all over the world.”

Martha Howson, School of Language and Global Studies Gamcheon Culture Village, Busan, South Korea
“Gamcheon Culture Village is a town famous for its winding alleys and steep streets lined with colourful houses. It was originally a shanty town built by people fleeing the north of the Korean Peninsula (now North Korea) after WWII and the subsequent Korean War. The houses have been painted brightly to attract tourism and generate money for the local area.”

Takako Amano, School of Language and Global Studies Cienfuegos, Cuba “This is the main square in Cienfuegos. Due to unavoidable Western influences, Cuban towns are increasingly becoming more materialistic and Cubans are learning to make money off foreign tourists, but as of 2018, Cienfuegos was not yet as touristy as Havana or Trinidad and the best assets of this town definitely were the local people, who were very friendly and welcoming. During the day, this area is full of tourists. When it gets cooler, street parties suddenly start. When the sun starts going down like in the photo, one can experience some peaceful moments.

Sundeep Satya, School of Language and Global Studies Pick Your Own Pumpkin, Preston, England “The American tradition of ‘pick your own pumpkin’ has become increasingly popular in the UK during the autumn months. Many farm shops host pumpkin festivals with ‘pick your own pumpkin’ patches. Pumpkin picking is especially popular with children and a great way to get them outdoors. They can run around in the fresh air and choose which pumpkin to take home and carve out for Halloween. You can also cook up a delicious meal with this rotund vegetable.”

Robert Hutchinson, School of Language and Global Studies Gyeongbokgung Palace, Seoul, South Korea “Built in 1395, Gyeongbokgung Palace is arguably the most well-known palace within Seoul as numerous visitors, both native and foreign, come to see the palace throughout the year. Within the palace is the Gyeonghoeru Pavilion, which is one of the largest elevated pavilions in Korea and a wonderful sight to behold all year round. For a limited time each year, visitors are able to visit during the night to see it illuminated in such a way that makes it stand out against the night sky.”

José Miguel Barcia García, UCLan Alumni Ramberg, Flakstadøya, Norway “A large crescent of white sand stretches along a small fishing village between towering mountains and the open horizon of the Atlantic Ocean. Ramberg beach is one of the most scenic beaches in the Lofoten Islands in Norway. A common sight all over the area are the traditional red rorbu seasonal houses originally used by fishermen, now largely being rented out to tourists.”
