Welcome to the Worldwise Calendar 2020 The Worldwise Calendar 2020 brings together the winning entries from the 2019 Worldwise Photo Competition. The chosen photos are not only beautiful shots but also give us insights into the culture of the country in which they were taken. The competition attracted many entries, covering a wide variety of subjects including cultural events and celebrations, beautiful landscapes, and other interesting sights from all over the world. The selection above gives you just a flavour of this diversity. The Worldwise Team would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who contributed to the calendar by sharing their ‘worldwise’ experiences. If you have an interesting photograph which you would like to share, why not put it forward for our Worldwise Calendar 2021 - the deadline for entries is 18 October 2020.

Hao Guan, Lancashire School of Business and Enterprise Railway Station, Preston, England “Rainy days and black taxis are symbols of Britain. This picture was taken outside Preston railway station; the walls of the station’s waiting room have witnessed a lot of interesting history. In 1915, female volunteers set up a buffet here for sailors and soldiers during the Great War. The effort was continued throughout World War II with 12 million cups of tea being served to the troops travelling through the station.”

Vendula Pechová, School of Humanities, Language and Global Studies N Seoul Tower, Seoul, South Korea “The photo captures the well-known phenomenon of ‘love locks’. While popular all over the world, the trend is seen as bothersome in many countries. However, ‘love locks’ found their second home in South Korea as Korean couples took this lovely gesture to the next level and covered the N Seoul Tower in hundreds of thousands of them, declaring their love for the world to see.”

This picture looks like it was taken somewhere in Asia, but what you will not believe is that this incredible Hindu temple is in the heart of London. Here, visitors from around the world are welcome to attend a beautiful, traditional ceremony and discover more about the Hindu philosophy.”

José Miguel Barcia García, UCLan Alumni Seville Fair, Seville, Spain “The “Feria de Abril de Sevilla” takes place in the Andalusian capital every year, usually two weeks after Easter. It lasts a week and it involves parades of horse riders and carriages throughout the day. Citizens of Seville, either in traditional dresses or very smartly-dressed, enjoy time with friends and family in caseta tents while dancing sevillanas, drinking rebujitos or eating tapas until the early hours of the morning.”

Susan Fletcher, School of Law and Social Science Puffing Pedro, Lagos, Portugal
“You never know who you will meet around the next corner as you walk through the labyrinthine streets of Lagos’ old town. Known locally as ‘Puffing Pedro’, this is just one of hundreds of characters celebrated on Algarvian walls thanks to the ARTURb (Artistas Unidos em Residencia) project which attracts some of the best street artists in Europe. The murals are hard to capture due to their impermanence and the inevitable street parking. You need patience and a wide lens!”

Lucy Fox, School of Humanities, Language and Global Studies Rialto Bridge, Venice, Italy “The Rialto Bridge is one of the oldest bridges in Venice over the Grand Canal; it was first built in the 12th century but has been rebuilt several times since. The gondolas and the gondolier businesses in Venice are passed down through generations in families and they are commonly thought of as the most romantic way to travel around the city.”

Walking along the streets, you are taken back to ancient times as many of the buildings and souks (markets) have been restored to their original glory dating back to the 9th century. The town is bustling with souks dedicated to dates, pottery, silver and Arabian food. This picturesque town is a must see for anyone travelling to Oman.

Hongda Zhong, School of Journalism, Media and Performance Street Stalls in Djemaa el-Fna, Marrakesh, Morocco
“The Djemaa el-Fna, Marrakesh’s main square, was listed as an Intangible Cultural Heritage site by UNESCO in 2001 for its unique concentration of Moroccan traditions and bringing urban legends to life through musical and artistic performances. During the 11th century the square was used for public executions, hence its name, which means ‘assembly of the dead’. Today street stalls sell a lot of colourful souvenirs which are not, as most people believe, traditional Arab handicrafts, but rather an amalgam of traditional Arabic and western modern culture.”

Jessica Lilley, School of Humanities, Language and Global Studies The Great Wall of China, Huangyaguan Section, China
“I travelled from Tianjin to the Huangyaguan section of the Great Wall of China. We chose to go to the Huangyaguan Pass without a guide. Our trip felt very adventurous and raw. Taking our time exploring this area really emphasized the Wall’s immensity, both in size and historical significance. The Wall had a powerful yet peaceful presence. Many tourists are reluctant to travel as far as Huangyaguan; it felt like we had the place to ourselves. The only thing that stopped us from staying longer was the heat!”

Guanyu Huang, School of Humanities, Language and Global Studies Shieldaig Bay, Shieldaig, Scotland “Shieldaig is a quiet village sitting on the west coast of Scotland. The village was founded in 1800 and used to be a fishing village rich in herring; the name is derived from the Old Norse ‘síld-vík’ which means ‘herring-bay’. It still carries a sense of tranquility even though it is a popular tourist attraction.”

Magdalena Polakowska, School of Humanities, Language and Global Studies Lake Bled, Julian Alps, Slovenia “Swimming in a mountain lake sounds like a challenge; not in Lake Bled, where the water temperature can reach up to 26°C in the summer months. This makes Lake Bled not only one of the warmest lakes in the Alps, but also one of the most popular tourist destinations in Slovenia. The views are beautiful: the island, the church, the castle towering over the lake, and of course... the Alpine mountains.”
