First arrival was Wilhelm Heinz’s P-51D uncrated at its new home, Degerfeld Airport in BadenWurtemburg, Germany in late February. The former RCAF machine, now named “Louisiana Kid”, is painted in 361st Fighter Group colours. The second P51D named “Moonbeam McSwine” arrived for new owner, Frederick Akery in Avignon, France. This machine is one of the best known Mustangs in the USA finishing first in the 1999 Reno Air Races bronze final. It is finished in the colours of the 478th Fighter Group ace Capt. William J. Whistner.

“By working on the aircraft in front of museum visitors, much of the racing pedigree and cutting edge technology of this iconic aircraft can be explained and demonstrated”, explained Mitchell who is chairman of the project. I More information visit – www.operationspitfire.org.uk
