Three Low-Cost Upgrades for your Pre-Owned Aircraft With the pre-owned business aircraft market having near-zero availability for some popular models currently, Dave Higdon shares some simple, low-cost upgrade ideas for breathing new life into some of the older inventory still available for sale… n today’s pre-owned aircraft market, demand outweighs supply, making this a tight market for those wishing to break into business aircraft ownership. The current market dynamics also mean it can be difficult to find the ideal aircraft at a reasonable price. For would-be buyers who are flexible enough, there are some good options that could almost fit the bill. With a lowcost upgrade or two, these could in fact become the ideal airplane. Of course, the onus remains on the buyer to do due diligence before purchasing a jet to upgrade. The low-cost upgrades mentioned here assume that the aircraft isn't due an engine overhaul anytime soon; that it already has any mandatory work (such as ADS-B compliance) installed; and that all Airworthiness Directives (ADs) are complied with.

1. IFR-GPS

Some jets and turboprops comply with a mandate, but the installed solution offers very little else, if anything. For example, the hardware installed may fulfill the need for a position source (ADS-B Out), but not for active navigation (ADS-B In). This could be a good time to revisit the options, replacing that position source with a true GPS navigator. More options exist today than a couple of years ago, and these new options deliver navigation and IFR approach capabilities. With the FAA eager to retire many expensive-to-maintain Instrument Landing Systems (ILS), and with an increasing number of IFR GPS approaches in the US (many of which offer greater utility, to more runway ends), replacing the data sourceonly GPS engine with a full navigator offers increased utility and, in most cases, a graphic-display screen that serves as a Multi-Function Display (MFD). Less expensive than a full flight panel makeover, these newer options deliver more runway options, greater accuracy, and other desirable utilities for many older business aircraft, where the options simply didn't exist a couple of years ago.

2. Audio Panel System

Another low-cost improvement with functional utility for crew and passengers comes in the form of a modern audio panel system. There are several options available on the market, and improvements in audio quality is just the start of what a modern audio panel can offer. Choices could include stereo audio, dynamic audio (delivering differential audio), music inputs, and connections to video feeds, all of which can help give an older private jet’s cabin a boost with audio on a par with the newest business jets – all for a fraction of the cost.

3. Carpet, Brightworks & LEDs

When faced with a drab, gloomy cabin environment, it won’t always be necessary to spend on a full-cabin makeover. Budget solutions exist to give a candidate aircraft the look and aroma of brand new. Start at floor-level, installing new carpeting where it’s needed, and work your way up to the overhead. New carpeting can dramatically enhance the all-important first impression the cabin gives. A change of carpet can open up options for colors and patterns that give a personalized feel (i.e. reflecting a corporation’s colors), and which are equal in look and feel to the carpets being installed into the cabins of today’s factory-new jets. Similarly, the polished appearance of new buckles and brightworks can noticeably enhance the first-impressions given by the cabin. And, another low-cost upgrade to lift a less-than-perfect cabin is LED lighting. The variety of color options available suits just about every need and mood, while simultaneously reducing the load on the airplane’s electrical systems. Moreover, thanks to advances in LEDs, many of today’s options are literally plug-and-play to install. Carpet, brightworks, and LED lighting can combine to transform a previously tired, uninspiring cabin environment into an ideal place for occupants to work, rest and play en route, with no hint of the upgrade being done on a relative shoestring.

Avoiding Extravagance

Of course, once you begin delving into the literally hundreds of upgrade options, materials, and colors available on the market, it could be easy to lose focus and end up spending more than you originally intended to transform your ‘nearlyperfect’ acquisition into your ideal jet. It’s best right at the beginning of the process to make a list of what you’re willing to invest in upgrading and, having done so, to solicit bids from different MRO shops, helping to ensure the work is neither overpriced, nor so cheap that the quality suffers and you regret making the upgrade in the first place. ❚

SKYDIVING SERVICES The Adrenaline Junkies of Aerial Work Aviation Have you ever thought of parachuting out of a perfectly good airplane? Or, are you looking for something that frightens, invigorates, and overwhelms your senses while at the same time providing an experience of a lifetime? If you want to know, Patrick Ryan will ‘Jump’ you to the answer and ‘Freefall’ you through the details of how one specific Aerial Work aviation sector does just that – Skydiving Services. Skydiving is a risky sport or an extreme entertainment event where people voluntarily (at risk) throw themselves out of airplanes, off a bridge, or jump into a vertical windtunnel for fun. Generally speaking, this sport or sector is no different than other thrill-seeking Aerial Work operations, e.g., Aerial Entertainment, Aerial Tours, etc. Today, you will find that many people are getting more adventurous and looking for competitive sports and recreational activities that go beyond the norm, i.e., they want something like Skydiving to fill the challenge void. Even though this extreme sport comes with a risk because you have to jump from an airplane only with a harness and a parachute, it’s definitely worth taking if you’re looking for your next thrill in life. Yes, Skydiving has risks; however, it is not as dangerous as you may think! The skydiving community works hard to ensure every flight and jump is conducted safely. of that, statistically speaking, Skydiving is safer than driving to work every day if you didn’t know. So, with that, what are skydiving services, and what are the things that make this particular Aerial Work sector exciting, safe and fun?

Skydiving Services

The civilian skydiving sector consists of for-profit businesses and non-profit clubs. Both are generally structured the same. In the case of Skydiving, these businesses or clubs are structured around a specific type of skydiving operation, offering specialised parachutes and gear, supporting parachute packing (rigging), organising and managing a Drop Zone (DZ), providing training, and delivering the means to elevate you before you fall, e.g., going airborne with an aircraft or literally throwing you off a cliff (BASE jumping). Additionally, many skydiving businesses and clubs supplement their revenue stream by selling parachute equipment and offering specialised accessories. Plus, even operating an on-site café or restaurant to enhance the experience of being part of a unique community. Other unique and fun services provided by skydiving businesses and clubs are: Demonstration Skydiving – This service comprises of skydivers parachuting into special events such as music concerts, sporting events, and special national holiday

gatherings. Skydivers usually use a smoke system during free fall and land within the area of an event, e.g., within a stadium or on a beach, to make an event even more memorable. Birthday Skydiving – Birthday skydiving is a service that provides an unforgettable experience for those who want to go beyond blowing out a few candles on a cake. This service consists of jumping strapped to a skydiver and free-falling from 14,000 ft. Plus, It is followed by a party at the DZ. Skydiving Marriage Proposals – Like birthday skydiving, skydiving marriage proposals take advantage of an already fast-beating heart after free-falling with an experienced skydiver from 14,000. If done right, both partners jump together, but the ‘asking’ partner lands first and lays out a large banner that says “Will You Marry Me” and prepares the ring while the other partner – probably totally confused at this point ¬– slowly glides to earth for the big moment. Charity Skydiving Events – Charity skydiving events consist of demonstration skydiving teams jumping for free to support a community project or even organising a charity jump where a portion of the jump fee is donated to a good cause.

Types of Skydiving Operations

Besides the basic structure of a skydiving business or club, there are many specialised skydiving operations that these groups provide or support routinely or on special

Skydivers admire this jump plane because of the high wing and big door, with lots of space for exiting. Usually, there are two benches in the aircraft for skydivers to sit during the climb.

occasions. Here are some of the most popular or unique operations or services you’ll see at a DZ. Tandem Skydiving Tandem skydiving is the most prevalent type of operation, and its customers are primarily first-time skydivers or jumping for a one-time experience. A customer will be attached to an experienced skydiving instructor in this operation. The instructor’s job is to operate the equipment and ensure the customer has a great time. Tandem skydiving is an excellent approach to experience Skydiving without having to go through extensive training. Static Line Jumping A static line jump, also known as ‘automatic opening’, is usually carried out from a short height of 3,500 ft or higher, e.g., similar to Paratroopers jumping from a military transport aircraft. In a static line jump, the parachute is deployed automatically via a ‘static line’ connected to the aircraft as soon as the jumper exits the plane. When it comes to training, static line jumping falls between tandem skydiving and free fall skydiving. Most static line training involves learning the nuances involved in making a safe PLF (Parachute Landing Fall). Conversely, the downside of static line skydiving is the lack of freefall time. Accelerated Freefall (AFF) AFF is what most people associate with Skydiving, i.e., a skydiver free-falling for many seconds before deploying their chute. However, AFF is a training operation instructing a solo skydiver how to exit an aircraft, free-fall, and make basic manoeuvres. Plus, navigating to the DZ and landing. AFF consist of a student jumper accompanied by two highly experienced AFF instructors who will hold the student at first. Still, as they progress through several jumps, the instructors will be less active, and the student will be able to fly independently. However, during their last AFF jump, they will have just one instructor, and then the student is expected to complete a series of consolidation jumps before obtaining their skydiving licence. Formation Skydiving (FS) Another image the public has of Skydiving is formation skydiving. Formation skydiving is the operation of a group of skydivers (4 FS divers or 8 FS divers) jumping and falling together in a belly-to-earth position (as you do on a tandem skydive) and creating shapes – or formations – by holding one another’s arms and legs. Formation skydiving is the next stage of Skydiving after AFF training. Indoor Skydiving Even though it’s not the real thing regarding actually falling towards mother earth at 120 miles per hour, indoor

Although it’s a bit cramped, a Porter has a nice high wing for jumpers and a sliding door. Plus, it is usually fitted with a big step outside for large group exits. Antonov An-2

Skydiving opens the experience of Skydiving to a broader population. Indoor Skydiving uses an upright windtunnel that allows customers to feel the freedom of human flight. The skydiving windtunnels work with powerful propellers which lift the body vertically in the tunnel. Customers then control their position by moving with hands and legs and can experience the enjoyment of Skydiving in a much safer and more manageable environment. This operation can be practiced by children and adults and has many health benefits and much lower medical restrictions.

Skydiving Jump Planes

Different airplanes are used in the skydiving sector when it comes to the aircraft that support Skydiving. These aircraft are often referred to as ‘jump planes’. Each DZ has its own jump plane. The aircraft type used depends on the airfield set up, the type of skydiving operation conducted, and how many skydivers jump regularly. Jump aircraft vary from small GA trainer aircraft up to commercial C-130 Hercules. However, most jump aircraft used today primarily carry between 4 and 24 jumpers. Additionally, they’re usually high-wing aircraft with large exit doors. Although there are numerous different types of jump planes used every day, there are preferred ones in the skydiving sector. Today, if you visit a skydiving business or club near you, don’t be surprised to see one of these aircraft delivering their jumpers to altitude. Cessna, C-182 Skylane – The Cessna 182 is probably the most common skydiving jump airplane globally. The average Cessna 182 can carry four skydivers to 10,000 ft in about 20 minutes. Unfortunately, there are no seats in this plane except for the pilot. So skydivers are sitting on the floor.

Daher, Kodiak – The Daher Kodiak is new to the skydiving world. Like other popular skydiving aircraft, Skydivers love their large door and high wing. However, in its skydiving configuration, the aircraft is outfitted with a sliding door and can accommodate up to 15 skydivers to 12,000 ft in nine minutes. Because of its newness and performance, you’ll see more of this aircraft at DZs worldwide. Viking, Twin Otter – The Twin Otter is a famous twinengine turbine jump plane. The Twin Otter is respected as a fast and robust aircraft. It can carry up to 22 skydivers seated on two long benches to standard jump altitudes in less than 15 minutes. The wide door accommodates large group exits, and the wing is high and out of the way of jumpers. Dornier, Do-28 G92 – Like the Pilatus Porter, the Dornier G92 is a common skydiving plane in Europe. This aircraft is a twin-turbine high-wing aircraft with a fast climb to altitude capability. It can take 15 jumpers to 15,000 ft in just 11 minutes. Skydivers love this aircraft because of its climb rate and sizeable sliding door (slightly larger than a Caravan door).

Jumping with Drones

Like with the other Aerial Work aviation sectors, many drone entrepreneurs and inventors are exploring ways of introducing drone technology into Skydiving. However, drones will probably not have a dominant presence in this sector anytime soon. The main reason for this is Skydiving is an individual human-driven experience or a personal ‘need for speed’. So, what is the purpose of replacing one’s need for speed with a robot? However, outside of replacing the human experience, drones are starting to find a minor supporting role. If you’re curious, here are some of the unique things people are developing with drone technology and supporting the skydiving community today: • • •

Drone Jumping – A heavy-lift drone does the job instead of an aircraft taking a jumper up to altitude. Shadow Drone – A shadow drone is a smart robot camera designed to autonomously free fall along with a skydiver and film the event. BASE Jumping Drone – A BASE jumping drone is a small FPV (First Person View) racing drone, operated by a pilot on the ground and nearby, closely films the descent of a skydiver who just jumped off a cliff or high tower.

The Last Jump of the Day

When the last jump of the day is completed at any DZ, and all the jumpers walk away exhilarated, safe, and passionately affected by what they accomplished, the skydiving service sector did its job. As you read, the skydiving sector of Aerial Work aviation is not a loosely organised activity but rather a focused group of independent businesses and clubs with similar structures, standards, and aircraft. The skydiving sector also supports many unique and specialized operations, from simple tandem skydiving to high-risk BASE Jumping.

KODIAK 100: The most modern and capable skydiving platform •

What are the capabilities required in a good airplane for skydiving activities? The ability to carry a full stick of skydivers and fly them to the jump altitude as quickly as possible – followed by a rapid return to base for another load.

The Kodiak 100 is perfectly tailored for this mission, with its large cabin capacity and a short time-to-climb for deployment over the drop zone. The Kodiak 100’s performance is truly impressive: with its short takeoff and landing capabilities, the aircraft has a 1,200-plus ft./min. climb and a descent rate of 6,000 ft./min. at the 183-kt. maximum operating speed (VMO). Carrying a full load of comfortably installed parachutists, the aircraft reaches a jump altitude of 12,000 ft. (3,600 meters) in 9 minutes, 30 seconds – enabling up to four rotations per hour. Feedback from a survey of utilizers underscores the Kodiak 100’s key advantages for skydiving operations: • Short takeoff and landing capabilities: Excellent for everything from airports to airstrips. With the standard 29-inch tires, the Kodiak 100 can land at its maximum takeoff weight; • Operator-friendly turboprop engine: The rugged and reliable PT6A-34 does not require cooling off between rotations. Its starting modes (Hi & low start) provide more control over engine starts; • Self-sufficient: Large fuel tanks and high cruise speeds enable quick rotations as well as deployments to remote locations;

Autonomy: A ground power unit is never required to start a Kodiak (while it is mandatory for the first engine start of the day with other turboproppowered aircraft types); and Practicality: Inner and outer handlebars are located at the large rear sliding door. The sliding door can be closed in flight from the cockpit once all skydivers have jumped from the aircraft.

In addition to the Kodiak 100’s designed-in ease of maintenance, the aircraft is supported by Daher’s international network of Kodiak Care service centers. ORIENS AVIATION ADDS CIRRUS SR SERIES MAINTENANCE Oriens Aviation is now able to offer third party maintenance, repair & overhaul (MRO) services for the Cirrus SR family of single-engine piston aircraft (the Cirrus SR20, SR22 and SR22T) at its base at London Biggin Hill Airport (EGKB). The company says Biggin Hill represents “an attractive south-east UK MRO location, complementing existing UK providers in Guernsey, Gloucestershire and Leeds” but giving Cirrus owners a convenient location near London. The Cirrus SR Series is one of the world’s best-selling single-engine aircraft, “hugely popular amongst private pilots,” noted Oriens. In manufacture since 2001 in more than seven model variants, it is distinctive in its class for its fixed landing gear and emergency parachute system known as CAPS (Cirrus Airframe Parachute System). The latest SR22 features lower drag wheel pants which increased fuel efficiency, a keyless baggage door, illuminated entry steps and USB charging points. The type has become increasingly popular in Europe with first-time owners, says Oriens, which points to a customer survey which revealed that almost 40 percent of buyers of SR2X Series aircraft in 2021 were new to aviation. In addition, with some 25 percent of SR orders now coming from outside the US, Cirrus elected to open a regional operations office in Rotterdam, The Netherlands as part of expanding its support for European customers.

While professing himself optimistic about the possible demand for Cirrus SR Series servicing (annual and 50/100-hour checks) in the London area, where a lot of the aircraft are based, Locke stresses a determination to put customer service first. The company in mid-June already had one aircraft in for a routine check at the company’s Biggin Hill hangar.

Locke said CAA approval for SR Series maintenance (it is adding the type to its existing CAMO approval) will quickly lead to FAA Repair Station Approval as well. Most UK-based Cirrus aircraft are on the G-Register or N-Register. “We are delighted to become a Cirrus SR2X Partner,” said Locke. “The Cirrus is a fantastic aircraft and a great brand in personal aviation, testament to its excellent sales performance. We look forward to working with the team in Europe, supporting UK owners.” Locke will oversee technicians and engineers on the SR Series, as well as committing further investment to equipment and tooling. The business is currently recruiting additional B1/B2 engineers, too. “We’re taking one person on for back-office technical support… we’re continually taking on engineers and two have already completed the Cirrus type course — and we’ll send more soon. Eventually all our engineers will have Cirrus approvals.”

As experience with the SR Series builds, Locke says: “We’ll be aiming to reduce down-time for customers and focus on our stock/spare parts holding,” to address current issues with the supply chain. “We’re placing an order for a significant parts holding this week,” Locke told GA Buyer Europe in mid-June. SR Series upgrades could come later, admitted Locke, but for now the focus is on “making sure we have a high level of customer service.” Robert Walters, Commercial Director at London Biggin Hill Airport, said: “Oriens Aviation is seeing fantastic growth here at London Biggin Hill and we are thrilled the company is now a Cirrus SR2X Partner. Oriens Aviation plays an important role here at the Airport and is a vital part of our business aviation ecosystem.” London Biggin Hill Airport is located in Class G airspace and has an ILS on its single hard runway (at the Runway 21 end of 03-21) and routinely accommodates jets as large as the Boeing 737/BBJ.

Engineering Capability Stuart Locke, Oriens’ General Manager Engineering (below), who has now been with the company for almost four years developing its maintenance activities, said: “We’ve been courting Cirrus for some time now as it’s a fantastic aircraft. The business model and customer base is very top end, similar to our other work.”

TOP GUN - TOP FUN LIGHTS - CAMERA - ACTION!

If you’ve not seen the new Top Gun film ‘Maverick’ yet, you are in for a real treat. Especially if you go to an iMax. If you have seen it, then my advice…. see it again. It’s genuinely that good. But in terms of subject matter, what’s it doing here in the ol’ Historic Section of GA Buyer Europe? Well, as ever… there’s always some background to find, and I don’t mean the 600 mph background captured on film, I mean some history to scratch the surface off. Actually, regardless of that, this is an aviation publication, and what we’re talking about is possibly the best aviation movie of all time. So, surely, we should tip our hat to the quite extraordinary effort this film went to in order to land some of the best aviation footage ever captured (Note: the following piece contains no spoilers outside what’s already in the trailers).

‘CRUISE’ IN A MUSTANG! We all know Tom Cruise can fly a plane, right? But how about fighter jet trainers such as the L-39? And how about helicopters (that was him flying solo in the last Mission Impossible film!) and how about in this Top Gun treat flying a P-51 Mustang! Not only is that him front and centre in the P1 seat… but that’s his actual plane! Originally built in 1944, Tom’s Mustang rolled off the production line in Dallas as an F-6K Mustang; a ready-to-arm reconnaissance variant of the P-51. It’s flying today as one of only two surviving examples of the original F-6K model 30 HISTORIC AIRCRAFT EUROPE JULY 2022

(of 164 built). It was beautifully restored as a P-51K by ‘Teeters’ workshop at Cal Pacific in California in 1997. A year later it won best P-51 at EAA’s AirVenture Oshkosh show! Following production in WWII the aircraft was donated to a Civil Air Patrol Unit (US Air Force Auxiliary). In 1968 it went on display at the Victory Air Museum, Illinois and following its restoration in 1997 it was purchased by Tom in 2001. He has since become a highly respected warbird pilot in the industry.

FIGHTER WEAPONS SCHOOL Originally based at the Naval Air Station in Miramar, San Diego, the Fighter Weapons School or ‘Top Gun’ opened its doors in 1969 following a much needed training boost for in-service fighter pilots battling for air dominance in Vietnam. In those days ‘the need for speed’ was delivered by the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk. The Top Gun instructor pitched the student against a Northrop T-38 Talon to simulate combat manoeuvring against Russian Migs. The Skyhawk was later replaced with the iconic and game-changing Grumman F-14 Tomcat, A twin-engine, supersonic, swept-wing fighter. And not a small aircraft by any means given it’s 64ft wingspan! By the way, did you know if was flight-tested with the wings in an asymmetric sweep position, and deemed capable to still land back on a carrier in that configuration! Oh to be a test pilot…!

The Tomcat was later replaced by the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet, which evolved to today’s Top Gun trainer; the Boeing F-18E/F Super Hornet.

TOO CLOSE FOR MISSILES... I'M SWITCHING TO PUNS! In 1996 the School was merged into the ‘Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center’ at the Naval Air Station in Fallon, Nevada where urban legend has it that if you quote Top Gun during training you get an on-the-spot cash fine. Only a couple of dollars, so it’s more to dissuade than anything else. Remember this is serious business at the end of the day. But it’s not like the original film did any harm with its quote-inspiring dialogue… following its 1986 release, there was a 500 percent increase in applications to join the US Navy's fighter pilot programme!

LITERALLY TAKING THE ‘G’ OUT OF CGI It’s not just the aerial sequences that are astonishing in this movie, it’s the fact that ALL of the cockpit shots are real. No CGI was used, and this was something Tom insisted on from the start. For anyone reading this that’s enjoyed some aerobatic flying, you’ll know that even 3G takes some getting used to. In the F-18, the actors and actresses were experiencing up to 9G! So how did they find their G-legs and still manage to do their day job… i.e. ‘act’? Tom Cruise himself spearheaded a three-month bootcamp flight-training programme for all the actors and actresses who played pilots in the film. They had to take basic orientation training in Cessna 172s before progressing to the Extra 300 to start building up their G tolerance. From there they took to the rear seat of the L-39 fighter jet trainer so they could learn to control their breathing during sustained heavy G manoeuvres to fight the onset of G-LOC (g-force induced loss of consciousness). This totally normal body response begins with tunnel vision, then you lose colour in ‘Greyout’ followed by ‘Blackout’ (no sight, but still conscious) and finally G-LOC – where consciousness is lost. And they needed learn to combat air sickness, which is not just about trying to acclimatise physically in order to prevent it, but how to quickly recover from it and still perform (literally, in the case of the actors!) Before finally stepping aboard the two seat F-18 ‘Hornet’ for actual filming, they had to not just take, but actually pass, the US Navy fast jet survival training course which included ejector seat training and underwater escape training. On top of all of that, there was a whole bunch of other challenges caused by isolating the actors and actresses from the film crew… and this is, I think, one of the most remarkable feats accomplished in the production, for each actor had to set up and manage

their four HD camera systems (as did the pilot up front who likewise had to operate a further two), as well as do sound checks; keep a written record of take numbers, sequences and production notes; be responsible for lighting decisions (aka using the sun to control the right lighting effects); ensure the backdrop was correct and followed continuity (not easy when covering the terrain at 600 mph!); coordinate with other cast members airborne; and still follow a script, nail the lines and deliver on the acting. AND, on top of all of that, do their own makeup and appearance adjustments to ensure that at all times their on-screen continuity i.e. breathing mask in exactly the right place, visor clean, right amount of sweat and have a sick bag to hand! The whole aerial production is genuinely nothing short of a masterpiece in planning, coordination, and execution. Truly A-MAZING!

‘CREDITS’ WHERE THEY’RE DUE Ladies and Gentlemen, aviators and enthusiasts, this is one of those times to trust the hype! Go see this film and see it BIG (iMax it if you can). The aerial sequences are fantastic and if you consider and appreciate the prep and coordination of how they put this whole thing together (under Tom’s unquestionable dedication to nailing this long awaiting sequel), I think you’ll agree they did an exceptional job. From Tom’s actual carrier-deck launch off the USS Abraham Lincoln, to the heart-pounding high-G flight through a valley at less than the aircraft’s wingspan off the deck, you really feel like you’re on board with him all the way, and you certainly leave the BIG screen with a BIG grin!

EASA Qualifies First H125 VR FTD Level 3 VRM Switzerland and Airbus Helicopters have achieved EASA qualification for a flight training device (FTD) at Level 3 with Virtual Reality (VR) technology for the Airbus H125 helicopter, at Helitrans in Norway. The training device was first approved by Airbus Helicopters and enables pilots to fly and feel the H125 with a level of fidelity very close to the real helicopter in all phases of flight and during emergency situations. The simulator will be used for pilot training and checking and will provide training credits.

Taking Helicopter Training to New Heights “VRM Switzerland has further enhanced its innovative VR technology that was first qualified in 2021 for a different aircraft. Backed by Airbus Helicopters’ expertise, the newly qualified H125 simulator meets FTD Level 3 requirements and achieves a very high representativity level,” said Fabi Riesen, CEO of VRM Switzerland. An in-house developed electrically driven high-dynamic motion platform and full replica cockpit layout, in combination with the VRM pose-tracking system, allow the pilot to operate the helicopter “like real,” added Riesen. The VR system with 3D vision and high-resolution sceneries rounds up the full-body immersion. A novelty is the common tablet with stored checklists and other documents which is fully integrated in the virtual world. This allows the pilot to operate a real tablet in VR “for the first time ever”.

Special Approval for VR Francesco Gaetani, Acting Head of the Air Crew & Medical Department at EASA, noted: “The H125 FTD approval represents a milestone for the use for virtual reality in devices from FNPTs to FTDs. EASA has carefully investigated the capabilities and effects of this combination of VR and motion systems for helicopter training. EASA is confident that such types of new technologies will bring added value to training organisations in terms of cost and flight safety. “As these devices are utilising new technologies not foreseen in existing regulatory requirements, special conditions for the approval had to be developed, ensuring an equivalent level of safety. During this process, EASA and the industry effectively collaborated to establish a sound qualification basis for the H125 FTD.” David Solar, Head of General Aviation and VTOL department at EASA, emphasised: “The EASA and rotorcraft-industry commitment and objective back

in 2018 when endorsing the Rotorcraft Safety Roadmap was to have visible and concrete results within five years. The VRM H125 FTD qualification is one of the tangible outcomes of the Roadmap, paving the way for more affordable and potentially more versatile training devices that can be used for enhancing overall rotorcraft safety. It also shows that collaboration between a regulator and within industry is the best way to get all stakeholders to move forward.”

Airbus Helicopters -VRM Switzerland Partnership VRM Switzerland and Airbus Helicopters signed a commercial partnership agreement during the 2022 Heli Expo in Dallas, Texas, for the commercialisation of the simulator. “In the frame of this agreement, both companies will cooperate to deploy the device worldwide and identify new areas of development for other helicopters and missions,” said the companies. “With this type of simulator, you can put the pilot in operational situations which would be very risky in real flight, but which bring a significant added value to training. It is true for emergency procedures but also for scenarios like flying in weather conditions that gradually deteriorate.” Sabrina Barbera, Head of Training and Flight Ops, added: “When we first met VRM Switzerland, we instantly recognised the great potential of the simulator and its added value in the training environment. Today, with FTD level 3 EASA qualification, a new step has been reached, with simulator hours that will bring credits in training. Such an innovative means will bring so many benefits to our customers by enhancing safety, affordability, and flexibility.”

Enhancing Safety “The H125 training solution allows recurrent programmes to be run more effectively,” said Riesen. “Today operators execute, as per regulation, manoeuvrebased proficiency checks mostly on real helicopters. With this simulator, pilots can learn more purposefully in scenario-based training completely without carbon emissions. The device is approved for proficiency checks, type ratings according to EASA part FCL, and parts of an instrument rating. Also, with this technology, Evidence-Based Training (EBT) concepts can be implemented.”

The Helicopter Industry is Back on Track Figures published by the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) show positive year-on-year delivery trends for most helicopter manufacturers for 2021. Although this rebound seems spectacular, the market is still fragile, and it is perhaps too early to speak of a complete recovery. But the good news is that all the signs are pointing in the right direction.

While deliveries of civil helicopters plunged significantly in 2020 (-17.7 percent in quantity, and 16.2 percent in value), the figures for 2021 show a return to a level comparable to that of 2019, both in terms of the number of aircraft delivered and turnover. For the time being, compared to 2019, 2021 returns -5.8 percent in number of helicopters delivered and -2.6 percent in terms of turnover.

Jet Ranger X If you look at the figures for the individual manufacturers, 2021 was an extremely successful year for Bell Textron Inc., with the Bell 505 Jet Ranger X standing out in particular in terms of unit sales. The manufacturer from Fort Worth in the US state of Texas has a well-filled order book for the type. At AERO in Friedrichshafen in April, Duncan Van de Velde, Managing Director Europe at Bell Textron, reported that the delivery positions for the type for 2022 were already completely filled. This wave of success is now continuing — Bell Textron, Inc. has signed a contract with the South Korean defence procurement agency, the Republic of Korea Defence Acquisition Program Administration, for the delivery of 40 Bell 505 Jet Ranger X helicopters. The helicopters will be used by the South Korean ROKN (Republic of Korea Navy) and the ROKAF (Republic of Korea Air Force) for training pilots. Delivery of the Bell 505 to Korea is scheduled to be completed by 2025.

Bell has designed its light turbine helicopter, the Bell 505 JRX, for use as a training helicopter from the very beginning. In addition to civilian flight schools, the Indonesian Navy, the Jamaica Defence Force, the Montenegro Defence Force, the Japanese Coast Guard, and the armed forces of the United Arab Emirates also use the model to train their junior pilots. So far, the manufacturer has delivered more than 360 Bell 505s to customers. Of these, 65 are flying in Europe. In February this year, the global Bell 505 fleet reached the 100,000 flight-hour mark.

Airbus at Oxford The United Kingdom is an important market for Airbus Helicopters, both in the civil sector and in defence. As a result, the company also intends to become involved in the NMH (New Medium Helicopter) tender just launched by the British Ministry of Defence for a successor to the 23 examples of the Puma HC. Guillaume Faury, Airbus’s Chief Executive Officer, said recently in London that Airbus Helicopters has just begun construction of a new Airbus Helicopters UK headquarters at Oxford Airport. Construction of the new, environmentally friendly building is expected to be completed in 2024 and cost about £40 million (€46 million). The manufacturer’s new headquarters will house the company’s military and civil helicopter activities. The aerospace group’s

exact investment was not disclosed, as Oxford Airport is also contributing to the cost of the project. The inauguration date of the new building in 2024 coincides with a special anniversary for Airbus Helicopters in the UK: This year, the manufacturer will have been present in the UK for 50 years. Belgian NHV Group has just reached the milestone of 70,000 flight hours with its Airbus Helicopters H175 fleet. NHV Group is the world’s largest operator of this helicopter type and has flown around half of all H175 flight hours. The company took delivery of its first H175 in 2014 and initially operated it from its base in Den Helder in the Netherlands. After gaining sufficient experience with the type, NHV Group deployed the super medium helicopter to other bases around the North Sea and in West Africa. Currently, the company’s H175s are based in Aberdeen in Scotland as well as Esbjerg in Denmark. Commenting on the flight-hour milestone, Neil Christie, chief pilot at NHV’s Aberdeen base, said: “It’s not every day that a company can celebrate a breakthrough like surpassing 70,000 flight hours on one type, but for this to happen during NHV’s 25th anniversary is truly a special occasion!” Naturally, the manufacturer, Airbus Helicopters, is also delighted with this milestone for the operator. Jérôme Fagot, H175 programme manager at Airbus Helicopters, said, “Airbus Helicopters congratulates NHV on the remarkable achievement of 70,000 flight hours with its H175 fleet. This means the H175 fleet has safely flown more than ten million nautical miles in support of the energy sector.”

At Heli-Expo in Dallas, Texas, the upward trend continued. The helicopter squadron of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office in Florida ordered two more R66s less than a year after the first one entered service. Sheriff Grady Judd explained the purchase decision: “We are adding a second and a third R66 because we are confident in the helicopter’s capabilities and functionality. It’s a great aircraft that has reduced our operating costs by almost 50 per cent.”

Robinson will deliver both R66s to the police unit later this year. They are equipped with the reinforced windscreens and a Wescam MX-10 camera system. Avionics in the form of a Garmin G500H and an AeroComputers moving map system as well a Technisonic police radio are compatible with night vision goggles. The helicopters are in the air about 1,100 hours per year.

Robinson Uplift After two years with few orders, the Robinson Helicopter Company of Torrance, California, has regained momentum in 2021, delivering 38 percent more helicopters than in the previous year. In 2021, the manufacturer handed over a total of 244 new helicopters to customers. This figure is made up of 86 R66 turbine helicopters as well as sales of the R44 Raven II (81), 34 R44 Raven I, 10 R44 Cadet and 33 R22 Beta II two-seater helicopters. This is 67 helicopters more than last year and 48 more than in 2019, putting the manufacturer back on a growth track, but still a long way from 2008 in terms of delivery figures, when it delivered no less than 893 new helicopters in one year.
