KEEP YOUR PROPELLER IN BALANCE! Maintaining dynamic propeller balance is vital, with annoying vibration and noise the least of the problems that can manifest. Catastrophic damage to the engine power train and other airframe components can occur while numerous minor issues, such as cracked sheet metal, persistent avionics failures, thrown belts, and excessive light bulb failures, can be avoided and corrected by balancing. ACES analysers make it easy to perform dynamic propeller balance testing for almost any aircraft — from the smallest homebuilt to large commercial airframe.

Maintaining dynamic propeller balance is a vital factor in optimizing an airplane’s service life. Strict guidelines determine tolerances for optimal performance and safe operation. Even with regular maintenance and attention to these limits, the dynamic components for a propeller system can become imbalanced. Small balance issues can quickly stack up to create errors that affect the aircraft engine, propeller, and even airframe.

Propeller Balance and Vibration An unbalanced propeller system, including the spinner assembly, can cause vibration that is detectable through testing or even in-cabin by the flight crew. While annoying, the noise and movement transmitted by these vibrations are the least of the problems that can manifest. Catastrophic damage to the engine power train and other airframe components can also occur if the imbalance isn’t addressed properly. Numerous minor issues, such as cracked sheet metal, persistent avionics failures, thrown belts, and excessive light bulb failures can be corrected by balancing. Fixing dynamic propeller balance is vital to every aircraft’s longevity.

Fixing Dynamic Propeller Balance While not a universal “fix-it” for eliminating vibration, its effects can often be reduced through propeller smoothing and balancing of the propeller assembly. Dynamic trim balancing may also help improve some vibration due to unbalanced components. If an aircraft or its engine is already in poor shape, however, balancing won’t help as the parts may be too old, worn, and in need of replacement.

It is still important, though, to perform routine testing for propeller balance, and not just when an issue is reported, in order to avoid future problems. ACES analyzers make it easy to perform Dynamic Propeller Balance testing for quick adjustments and more complex balance jobs.

The ACES Advantage The ACES Model 2021 Cobra II Analyzer is the most economical solution for the mechanic or FBO in need of a propeller balancer system that delivers consistent, accurate performance. However, the complete line of ACES analyzers can also be used for propeller balancing. Our versatile propeller balancers have a range of applications and are compatible with nearly any aircraft, from the smallest homebuilt to large commercial airframes. Even the most compact analyzers in the ACES Systems product line display our signature ease of use. Each offers lightweight portability, and powerful processing features that enable convenient precision testing.

About ACES Systems We believe in safety. Our engineers and A&P mechanics have been working for more than 25 years to provide industryleading aviation vibration analysis and portable vibration balancing equipment to the fixed-wing and helicopter aviation industry. Our fixed-wing and helicopter track and balance equipment greatly increase the safety and performance of aviation vehicles. We are the knowledge leader and trusted partner to global industrial customers, providing simple solutions to complex problems in commercial, business, general and military aviation industries.

CHECK YOUR INSURANCE ! Give us plenty of time to get you a Better Insurance Quote According to Chris Varley, Chairman of Export & General (E&G) Insurance, businesses are rarely proactive in looking early for better insurance premiums, which can contribute significantly to wider cost-cutting measures. “Whether you need insurance for your aircraft, hangar-keeper’s liability insurance, professional indemnity insurance, speaking to us early, perhaps a couple of months before the renewal date, can mean significant savings,” says Varley, who adds “We’re happy to remind you so feel free to let us know your current renewal dates.”

ABOUT E&G AVIATION INSURANCE

E&G Aviation Insurance is a leading aviation insurance broker specialising in insurance liability business cover including professional indemnity; cover for buildings including hangars and workshops; and for aircraft whether operating commercially, privately, or for training. It is a trading name of Export & General Insurance Services Limited (E&G), Beverley Meads Recreation Ground, Barham Road, Copse Hill, Wimbledon, SW20 0ET UK. For further information please contact

Insuring Vintage Aircraft We recently brokered insurance for a wellknown vintage aircraft, and this highlighted some differences from insuring standard general aviation aircraft.

All this feeds into higher premiums to match the higher level of risk, and with a small pool of potential underwriters it may take some time to find one willing to consider insuring the aircraft, and even longer to come to an arrangement that works for the parties.

Often vintage aircraft are more challenging to fly meaning that insurers place additional conditions, for example requiring each pilot that flies it to be pre-agreed based on their experience — and indeed insuring them may be contingent on a few additional hours training with someone more qualified.

So, if you want Vintage Aircraft Insurance please let us know well ahead of time. We can be with you on the journey and get to understand the aircraft and any project, to rebuild a Vintage Aircraft for example, and bring it back to airworthy condition.

A second point is that the airframes are older and require specialist knowledge to maintain them. They are often unique or have unique features, and few people have experience in maintaining them. Almost always there is no manufacturer behind the Certificate of Airworthiness so that they are on a Permit to Fly.

Chris Varley of E&G comments: “In the same way that new developments (such as eVTOLs) are likely to be difficult to insure, products at the other end of the lifecycle are also a challenge. But insurers will work with clients to try to get them cover for their ambitious projects and beloved vintage aeroplanes.”

TEXTRON/PIPISTREL AUG22.qxp_Layout 1 08/07/2022 14:36 Page 1

Textron Buying Pipistrel — Clever Move? In a move that surprised many, Textron announced in March 2022 that it was to buy Slovenian aircraft manufacturer Pipistrel. Is this a smart move by the US OEM? After pondering this for a few weeks, Chris Pratt is inclined to think it may be one of the best and boldest moves Textron has made in years. Here’s why… While I am not an ‘insider’ to this acquisition, I do have 40-plus years of working in, observing, and strategising for Business and General Aviation companies and would like to add some food for thought on the possibilities. Keep in mind this is a Textron acquisition – not Cessna, not Beechcraft, not Bell. A separate Textron eViation company is to be established to address electric, hybrid electric and sustainable aircraft development. Pipistrel will remain its own brand. So, could it be that Textron eViation will become a sort of ‘Skunk Works’ (apologies to Lockheed Martin) to explore future products for all Textron product lines and possibly some new ones, e.g. special mission, drones, etc.? For the $242m price, this appears to be a low-risk move with great potential upside. The purchase is happening at a tipping point for aviation which is faced not only with a green technology challenge, but also huge demand for new pilots (612,000 over the next 20 years according to Boeing*) to cater to a travel-hungry world. Where better to address these challenges than at the basic entry level of training pilots, and what better company to address pilot training than Textron, which historically has been the leader in flight training through its Cessna aircraft and Cessna Pilot Center network. I know what you’re thinking – there’s not much revenue or profit from training pilots when the sale of a few business jets would eclipse the training market… 20 PISTON BUYER EUROPE AUGUST 2022

The 80-80 Rule

Let’s think long-term and strategically. Do you remember the ‘80-80 rule’? After graduating college many years ago, I started my career at the Cessna Aircraft Company in its market research department. I was immediately made aware of the major importance of the flight training market. In-house research had found that 80 percent of people who learned to fly in a Cessna aircraft would buy a Cessna as their first airplane. And 80 percent of those buyers would buy a Cessna as their second airplane. That’s called brand loyalty. It worked then and I believe it still works today. Ask any aircraft salesman, whether they’re selling piston aircraft or jets, if brand loyalty figures into the aircraft sale and there is no question what their answer will be. There are many other potential advantages I can think of for Textron from the Pipistrel purchase.

Ready-Certificated Electric Aircraft

For example, it gives Textron an already certificated electric aircraft using rigid EASA standards from which to expand a product line and apply lessons learned. It also taps into an experienced workforce in this segment of aviation. The competitive landscape has changed over the years, and the conventionally powered Textron Aviation product lines will soon face electrified competition from companies such as Daher (EcoPulse), Diamond (eDA40), Voltaero (Cassio) and others who are nearing the finishing line on their electric offerings. Textron can use its eViation group to focus on these competitors as well as discretely work to advance its products across all segments – even some in which it is not currently engaged, such as eVTOL and drones. Electric or hybrid powered business jets are likely far down the road, but certainly a long-term strategy would address this segment.

In Summary…

Is Textron buying Pipistrel a good thing? l think so. I applaud and encourage this new venture from one of the world’s oldest and most conservative aircraft manufacturers. There is no doubt in my mind that electric- or hybridpowered aircraft are going to play an increasingly significant role in the future of an industry that is a favourite target of the environmental movement. My hope is that Textron will recognise that Pipistrel got its attention because of its expertise and leadership in the eViation segment and will confine its input to strategic direction while leaving Pipistrel alone to do what it does best. Good luck and best wishes! ■

HISTORY

Built in late 1944, the aircraft was delivered in January 1945 to the Royal Air Force, Halton Station Flight as NR750 and was coded "THA-F". Following retirement from military service in 1947, the aircraft was sold to 'A Hamson & Son’. Not long after, it was sold to Manx Air Charters Ltd (which later changed to Manx Airlines), on the Isle of Mann. From there it changed hands several times with various domestic airlines and operators. The aircraft was operated in Norway between 1971 - 1973, before coming back to the UK where in 1974 it made a TV appearance in ‘South Riding’ (dressed in costume as G-ADAE). Currently the aircraft is operated by a very experienced and highly respected vintage aircraft operator in the UK. For Further information contact:

AUGUST 2022

EYE OF THE HURRICANE! Commonly known as the ‘workhorse’ of the RAF during such conflicts as the Battle of Britain, the legendary Hurricane brought more than the threat of bad weather to the enemy in the skies of WWII. And it was a plane of briefing room controversy as designers told of their ideas in moving from biplane aircraft to monoplane fighters. Whatever your thoughts about which aircraft are the most significant of WWII, I think it’s impossible not to acknowledge that the dominance of much of the RAF during the period was strengthened thanks to the hefty success of the Hawker Hurricane!

Less is More... (in terms of wings, anyway!) Developed as an ‘interceptor monoplane’ based around the Hawker Fury biplane, the Hurricane started to form despite some opposition as many thought biplanes were superior. This brave new direction not only included two wings fewer, but also made the ‘legs’ disappear! A retractable undercarriage system was incorporated, as was the concept of moving nose-mounted guns to the wings with the addition of eight Browning machine guns (twelve were fitted to later variants). These were just two of the new initiatives! But there was more — the cockpit now had a roof (well canopy, but it still kept the weather out!) and a new engine by RollsRoyce called the PV-12 or, as it became more commonly known, the ‘Merlin’. 28 HISTORIC AIRCRAFT EUROPE AUGUST 2022

Pens got to paper and following many discussions with men holding clipboards, the prototype airframe was built in Kingston upon Thames (also the birthplace of GA Buyer did you know!?). This was moved to Brooklands in nearby Weybridge for completion and assembly. The prototype first flew on 6th November 1935. The design progressed through various refinements and went into production during the summer of 1936 whereupon it was officially named the ‘Hurricane’. This RAF’s new interceptor went into active service in the winter of 1937 and was the first fighter monoplane to join the RAF, and the first RAF combat aircraft capable of exceeding 300 mph in level flight. The design evolved from the interceptor through several variants including an intruder, a bomber escort, a fighter-bomber, and a ground attack aircraft (some of which carried rockets — actually the first RAF aircraft to do so). Some were even launched from ships with rocket-propelled catapults (nicknamed ‘Hurricat’). Clever thinking, but there was a downside — they could only take off! The exit from the aircraft included a swim rather than a set of steps, as necessity for the quick response naval deployment had overtaken design options at this point, so operations didn’t include a means for a safe landing back on the ship at the end of the flight meaning most pilots had to ditch!

LOOKING IN THE

Keeping it Simple One of the great advantages of the Hurricane was its simple construction, which meant that some quite significant repairs could be carried out by the squadrons themselves. This made a big difference in keeping up with the military pressure imposed in the skies overhead. The early models (pre-April 1939) had a fabric wing, but from then on an all-metal stressed skin was used. This improved the dive speed significantly and allowed greater stress during manoeuvring. But Hawker — wanting to keep aircraft in the air and not on the ground — always kept simplicity high up on their list, ensuring the fabric and metal wings were interchangeable. Rumour has it that one aircraft even flew with both fitted at the same time — fabric on one side and metal on the other. I’d love to know how that one flew! As World War II became the inevitable chapter in the History Books yet to come, over 550 Hurricanes had been produced. These were spread across 18 squadrons, and demand was high with another 3,500 aircraft on order. In late 1938, Canadian Car and Foundry in Ontario, Canada, undertook an initial contract to build 40 aircraft, and the first Hurricane from our Canadian friends came off the line in Fort William (now Thunder

Bay) in February 1940. A further 1,450 followed under the guidance of a lady called Elsie MacGill, the ‘Queen of Hurricanes’. Elsie was the first female in the world to be recognised as having a degree in aeronautical engineering and, through her continued commitment to streamline production as their Chief Engineer, a far higher number of Canadian Hurricanes were produced as a result.

During the Battle of Britain, the Hurricane brought the rain down hard on the Luftwaffe bombers. The Hurricane and its pilots fought bravely, and they fought hard. The recorded victory rate was actually 13 percent higher than the Spitfire during this period of the conflict. As the Battle of Britain started, the RAF had only around a third of the aircraft that the Luftwaffe had — the RAF had close to 750 aircraft at its disposal, while the Luftwaffe already had more than 2,500. But the Hurricane force alone took down 55 percent of the enemy aircraft. The Hurricane also contributed significantly over the skies of Malta in 1941 and again in the former Soviet Union under the lend-lease programme (where just under 3,000 aircraft were sent).

Our picture aircraft is a rare example indeed, this beautiful Hurricane MK I was built in 1939 under serial number P2902 (today registered as G-ROBT) and first flew on 20th October 1939. By May 1940, the aircraft was operational with 245 Fighter Squadron based in Drem, Scotland, engaged on shipping patrol duties. A little later, on 31 May 1940, carrying the Code of DX-R and flown by Pilot Officer Kenneth McGlasham, the aircraft was heading for the French coast escorting a flotilla of small ships en route to rescue thousands of troops at Dunkirk. As the Luftwaffe swept across Northern France towards the channel, McGlasham engaged with and suffered damage from an ME109. The badly injured pilot managed to bring the aircraft down to crash land on a beach in Dunkirk. The aircraft remained there until it was recovered in 1988! A stunning restoration of the aircraft was completed by Hawker Restorations and the first post-restoration test flight was made on the 19th June 2017. The aircraft remains fully airworthy today and can be seen at many airshows across the UK. Hurricane production ceased in July 1944 with some 14,500 having been built, with 24 variants. The Hurricane played an active role in all major theatres of the Second World War and is remembered by many as one of the most important aircraft of the era.

From Fantastic Hurricane to Fantastic Mr. Fox? As ever, there are stories within stories! Quite literally in this example. British novelist Roald Dahl was a fighter pilot before he was the global best-selling author of the children’s books we all know and love. Following an early RAF career flying Tiger Moths and Gloucester Gladiators, a 24-year old Roald took the controls of a Hurricane Mk I operated by 80 Squadron in North Africa. ‘Lofty’ to his mates (due to his tall 6ft plus stature) was quite the combat pilot and recorded his first victory from his Hurricane cockpit. A year after being medically discharged from the RAF, Roald had a chance encounter at the British Embassy in Washington DC with a writer, which subsequently led to the development of Roald’s first short story — and from then on the ink just kept on flowing, and the result was one of the most celebrated writers of his generation.

The company is now AvBuyer Limited and is based just down the river in Thames Ditton. The Kingston offices were based adjacent to the former site of Tommy Sopwith’s first factory when he moved from Brooklands to Kingston in 1912. In 2012 Kingston celebrated the Centenary and held an Aviation Exhibition in the town from June 2 – 5. This unique festival celebrated Tommy Sopwith setting up his first factory in Kingston 100 years before and the subsequent 80 years of the aviation achievements in Kingston.

The Kingston Aviation Festival The Kingston Aviation Festival took place on the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee weekend 2-5 June, 2012 and launched Kingston’s Cultural Programme. Kingston’s aviation heritage had never truly been celebrated and the Festival engaged with schools and the local community as a whole to raise public awareness of the thousands of people employed in Kingston’s aviation history. 45,000 Kingston-designed aircraft were been built since 1914 by the Sopwith and later the Hawker aircraft manufacturing companies. The Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force had always had Kingston aircraft in service. It is a heritage to be proud of.

Site of the Kingston Aviation Celebrations The Festival took place in Kingston’s historical Market House and Market Place set in the centre of Kingston upon Thames. The Market House housed an extensive exhibition of displays including film footage, photographs, specially built scale models and paintings, some of which were being shown for the first time.

Brief History of Aviation in Kingston upon Thames The History of Britain would be very different if Thomas Octave Sopwith (he was the 8th child) had not purchased the roller skating rink in Canbury Park Road near Kingston Railway Station South West London in December 1912. The Hawker Hurricane would not have been available to defeat the German Luffwaffe in the Battle of Britain and save the country from invasion. The Harrier Jump Jet would not have been available to shoot down the Argentinean jet fighter bombers over the Falkland Islands. Why did this aircraft designer want to buy a roller skating rink? It was because of the flatness of the roller rink’s surface. It was ideal for chalking out lines on the floor. In the early years of the aviation production planes were built to chalked out lines on the floor. Sopwith was born in 1888 and started his aviation interest at the age of 18 by flying balloons. In 1910 he purchased his first heavier than air monoplane for £630 from Howard Wright. He flew solo for the first time on 22nd October 1910. A pioneering figure in aviation, he won the Baron de Forest prize in 1910 for flying across the English Channel. He later crashed the plane but he had caught the bug. He had a business idea of starting a flying school. He set up business at Brooklands aerodrome and racetrack, Weybridge, Surrey, England. One of his first pupils was Major Trenchard who later went on to run the Royal Air Force as Chief of Air Staff.

Sopwith Charged £75 for a full course. Sopwith started to build aircraft at Brooklands. He built other designers aircraft under licence and the first Sopwith constructed aeroplane took off 4th July 1912.

large Daimler lorry to transport his land based planes to the nearby Brooklands airfield for testing. There are accounts that state he also towed some of his planes to Brooklands behind his car.

During the next six months his confidence as an aircraft manufacture increased and he decided to start designing his own planes. He needed a premises and that is when he found the Kingston Roller Skating Rink. The Skating craze had hit a high two years earlier and now was in decline so it was an ideal time for Sopwith to buy the premises. At the start he only had seven employees. Sopwith officially registered Sopwith Aviation as a company in 1913.

Sopwith Aviation made fighters and bombers for the Royal Flying Corps in World War One, like the famous Sopwith Pup and Sopwith Camel, and later for the RAF during the inter-war years and during World War Two. The Hawker Hurricane was developed in the Sopwith offices and built in Kingston upon Thames, Canbury Park Road near Kingston Railway Station.

If you look at the former Sopwith factory’s location on a map it seems a strange place to locate an aircraft production facility. It was in the middle of a town and nowhere near an airfield. Sopwith had foreseen that Float Planes were going to become important over the next decade and he needed a stretch of straight water to launch his designs. The River Thames just north of Kingston bridge was ideal. Sopwith got in trouble from the River Thames Conservancy group and the local police as he ‘forgot’ to ask permission to use the river to launch his planes. He used to wheel his float planes down to the river very early in the morning when there were very few people around to avoid being caught. Sopwith purchased a

The office building still remains but it has been turned into flats. All that remains of its historic past are small Hawker Hurricane propellers built into the wrought iron railings. This was where the first plans for the Hawker Siddeley Harrier jump-jet were drawn up. The famous The Hurricane and The Harrier jump jet were constructed and developed at Hawker’s larger plant near the junction of Lower Ham Road with the Richmond Road on the outskirts of Kingston. From there, in the mid-1960’s Hawker's designer John Fozzard was put in charge of the development of the Harrier GR.1 After a long period of development the first Hawker Siddeley Harrier jump-jet flew on 31st August 1966. In 1977 Hawker Siddeley Ltd was nationalized and became part of British Aerospace (BAE) group. The ‘Hawker Siddeley Harrier’ then became the ‘BAE Harrier’. ■

AIR-TO-AIR PHOTOGRAPHY The Flying Illustrators of Aerial Work Aviation

Have you ever wondered how those sharp, close-up aerial photos of an aircraft get on the front covers of flying magazines? Or what it takes to make such awesome airborne images? If you want to know, Patrick Ryan will ‘autofocus’ you on to the answer! Where Should We Start?

Let’s start by stating that professional Air-to-Air Photography is more than ending up with a fantastic picture of an aircraft slipping the surly bonds of Earth. It is thinking outside the box or outside the norm to create an image that catches the eye and captures the imagination. Yet, it also fulfills a customer’s needs even if that customer is a professional air-to-air photographer themselves. Air-to-Air Photography is a small and very specialised Aerial Work aviation discipline or job that is used for specific purposes, including specific types of applications. In Aerial Work aviation, Air-to-Air Photography refers to capturing images or photographs of other aircraft or subjects from an elevated position for hire, i.e., from the position of another aircraft. Air-to-Air Photography requires an artistic mindset and no shortage of technical skills. By far, aerial photographers have very specialised knowledge and experiences needed to successfully photograph flying aircraft while also being in the air themselves! Like other Aerial Work sectors, the 32 AERIAL WORK EUROPE AUGUST 2022

Air-to-Air Photography sector has a narrow focus that requires a combination of airmanship skills and unique talents to achieve a specific purpose. In this case, it’s an airborne image.

So, What is ‘Air-to-Air Photography?’ What it is Not

Air-to-Air Photography is not Aerial Photography. Aerial photography, like Air-to-Air Photography, is the endeavor or effort of taking photographs or video images (i.e., Aerial Videography) from an aircraft, be it a manned or unmanned airborne platform. However, Aerial Photography typically refers to aircraft taking aerial images that focus on landscapes, earth surface objects, and man-made structures, i.e., air-to-ground vs. air-to-air. Air-to-Air Photography, as a part of Aviation Photography, is the discipline of photographing aircraft or other flying objects by utilising another flying aircraft as a photo platform. Generally, it is two aircraft flying in

formation. One carries the photographer and is called the ‘photo’ airplane; the second aircraft is the ‘subject.’ Concerning Air-to-Air Videography, Air-to-Air Videography or Air-to-Air Filming is embedded or parallel to Air-to-Air Photography. Air-to-Air Videography has the same objective and operating processes as Air-to-Air Photography, but the camera and some artistic methods and techniques are slightly different.

The Need for Speed!

When it comes to who needs an image of a fast-flying aircraft, the customer base can vary from a private person, multi-billion dollar corporation, or even a military air force. Air-to-air photographers or service providers seek to provide Air-to-Air Photography or Videography services to individuals, aircraft owners, media outlets, museums, and aircraft manufacturers. These end-users recognise the value of aesthetic images and the value it provides them personally or their companies economically.

scheme, capturing a dynamic frontal image of a single airplane or formation of aircraft, or taking shots of an aircraft at low level over dramatic terrain in a high-G turn. Following this, an air-to-air photographer will define the operating area and airspace and ensure both the subject and photo aircraft can operate within their technical limits. Most air-to-air photographers will say planning is the most critical part of taking a good shot. Without proper planning, the shot will never happen.

Some of today’s primary (or sought-after) applications or services the Air to Air Photography community support are: Marketing & Advertising – People or companies who are in the process of marketing & advertising aircraft or aviation services rely on air-to-air photographers to enhance the marketability of their products or operations by showing it them in a dynamic ‘natural’ environment, i.e., flying. Companies like Airbus, Cirrus, Bell Helicopter, etc., routinely use air-to-air photographs or videos for corporate, product, or branding campaigns. Additionally, many private aircraft owners also leverage air-to-air photography to enhance the saleability of their private or corporate aircraft.

Photo Aircraft & Configuration When it comes to aircraft, air-to-air photographers like to use traditional ‘photo aircraft’ to capture the right image of a ‘subject aircraft’. Therefore, aircraft with superb uninterrupted views from the rear or an excellent side-onangle look are preferred. Some aircraft used for Air-to-Air Photography are Cessna Caravans, Beech Bonanza, Shorts Skyvan, and even classic warbirds like the B-25 Mitchell and OV-10 Bronco for their rear ‘tail-gunner’ views. Regarding configuration, the top two things air-to-air photographers are concerned with are plexiglass and safety. As many know, taking a picture through an airplane window is not the best. As a result, the quality or sharpness of the photo usually comes out poor. To mitigate this, many air-to-air photographers coordinate having a hatch or window removed for their photoshoots. Besides this, photographers fit safety harnesses to themselves and their kit, i.e., they would hate to lose their life or parts of their high-value camera equipment during an unscheduled wake turbulence event.

Media & Publishing – Besides marketing & advertising, many media outlets depend on air-to-air photographs or videos to enhance the message they are communicating. For example, many aviation publishing organizations or magazines like AvBuyer, Flying, Air Classics, Pilot, etc., regularly use inflight images of aircraft on the cover and throughout their magazines to capture their viewership. Additionally, aerial images of aircraft are used in the publication of corporate reports, academic articles, and historical documentaries. Plus, you'll find air-to-air images on the internet, e.g., on blogs, YouTube, and many other social media platforms. Recording & Documentation – As well as marketing & publishing, air-to-air photographs and video helps document and "for the record" specific flying events like flight testing, training, and inflight emergencies. Specifically, these air-to-air photography operations are conducted by ‘Chase Planes’ or ‘Chase Aircraft’. A chase plane flight operation is an aircraft that ‘chases’ a ‘subject’ aircraft or other types of flying objects to make real-time evidence observations by taking photographs and video of the subject platform. Private & Personal – Last but not least, various private and corporate aircraft owners want air-to-air photos for personal or private use. More private aircraft owners, flying clubs, and corporate flight departments enjoy seeing themselves flying their beloved aircraft or capturing the beauty and prestige of their investment.

"Tips & Techniques" Rationale

As mentioned before, Air-to-Air Photography is a very specialised Aerial Work aviation discipline. Because of the complexity and skill of choreographing aircraft, managing cameras, and looking for the right photo setting, the pool of professional air-to-air photographers is small compared to the broader aviation photography community. However, when taking a fantastic photo or video of a flying aircraft, there are some common practices the true professional airto-air photographer applies. The following are just some of these practices: Plan, Plan, Plan! Air-to-Air Photography isn’t something that happens

spontaneously or lightly. Air-to-air photo shots require detailed and extensive planning. When two aircraft hook up successfully in formation for a successful photo shoot, numerous hours are spent on ensuring every detail was thought through. The overall process consists of countless e-mails, phone calls, studying charts, weather checks, crew briefs between the photographer and pilots, and meticulously researching and cross-checking the flight formation plan to ensure the photo shot is safe and effective. The photo-shot planning begins when the customer defines their requirements and needs. Some of these needs could be highlighting a new aircraft colour or design

Inflight Photography Techniques As you can imagine, photographing other aircraft in the air has unique photographic challenges. It is a very fluid and dynamic environment with both the subject aircraft and the photo aircraft in high-speed motion against a continually moving ‘best-shot’ background. To manage all of this, airto-air photographers use many techniques to get it right first time. The number one technique is managing lighting and the background. The lighting and the background are essential to getting the best photos. Proper lighting is achieved through relative positioning of the aircraft relative to the sun or by only flying at a specific time of the day as required. Additionally, photographers need to ensure both aircraft are placed in the best light and have non-competing backgrounds. Besides considering lighting and background conditions plus the photo aircraft configuration, air-to-air photographers have to account for many other variables. For example: Propellers – When photographing propeller aircraft, photographers must consider the blur effect caused by the subject aircraft. Depending on the goal of the shot, the photographer will use a very high shutter speed to help ensure the sharpness of the subject and eliminate propeller spin blur. Conversely, slow shutter speeds often cause blurry subjects,i.e., because of the motion of the camera and aircraft. Stabilisation – Stabilisation is critical in getting any sharp image. Handholding a camera while standing firmly on the ground using certain shutter speeds is difficult. However, handholding a camera while shooting from a moving aircraft with a strong gale coming through the window with the subject airplane flying against a fast-moving background is even more challenging. Many air-to-air photographers use a gyro-stabiliser to mitigate this situation to dampen motion and aircraft vibration. A gyrostabiliser is a platform or device that dampens movement and vibration. Ever since the introduction of gyro-stabilisers, this bit of equipment has made air-to-air photography at slow shutter speeds possible.

The Coolest Job Ever!

The air-to-air photographerss job is a risky but rush-inducing kind of aerial photography that requires shooting from an aircraft with no doors or hanging out of windows. Air-to-Air Photography is definitely not for the faint of stomach. These photographers are comfortable with the idea of slipping out of their seatbelts, hanging out of hatches or open windows while completely turning around in their seats to get the right angle and perspective. Along with this, air-to-air photographers routinely battle crazy conditions and the elements while flying in all aircraft types, e.g., frigid air, prop/rotor blast, defeating noise, ❯

high-G manoeuvres, and more. Another non-routine (or routine, depending on your perspective) part of this job is to fly dangerously close to other aircraft regularly. It is not unheard of for air-to-air photo shots with only 20 feet separating the photo and subject aircraft. When it comes to the qualifications, experiences, or backgrounds of air-to-air photographers, the following are some of the disciplines or interests common among these professionals: • Aviation Knowledge (Pilot Licence) • Art Studies • Commercial Photography • Digital Arts • Photography • Photo Journalism All-in-all, the actual common thread that runs through most air-to-air photographers is passion and enthusiasm. They’re enthusiastic photographers with the same passion for aviation. In addition, they love the experience of combining their work and hobby into one job. Let’s not overlook another job critical to Air-to-Air Photography — the professional pilots who fly the ‘photo’ and ‘subject’ aircraft used in photo shots are essential to making every photo flight safe and effective. These pilots are not your average type of aircrew members but are highly trained and experienced in air-to-air photography operations and formation flying. In addition, many have extensive years working with photographers, videographers, and cinematographers, which allows for proper planning and well-coordinated shots. Without their aviator focus and hand-flying skills, the job can’t get done!

The Last Inflight Photo Shoot

Undoubtedly, the dedicated photographers and aircrew members of the Aerial Work aviation sector of Air-to-Air Photography ensure every amazing photo of an airplane flying through the sky ends safely and correctly. Also, the term ‘Air-to-Air Photography’ for this Aerial Work sector is more than taking a ‘spontaneous one-offphoto.’ It consists of many specific or specialised efforts or

services that provide valuable images to marketing, media, industrial and private clients. Like many Aerial Work sectors, the Air-to-Air Photography sector has unique operating procedures, preferred aircraft, and specialised kits. With that, one could say Air-to-Air Photography is one of the world’s coolest and most exciting jobs. So, as you can see, the Air-to-Air Photography sector of Aerial Work aviation is an essential cornerstone of the imagery world and especially the aviation community. Without air-to-air imagery of an Airbus 380 or classic Supermarine Spitfire gracefully slipping the surly bonds of Earth, we would be denied the pleasure of seeing the beauty of aviation in its true form! ■

INNOVATIONS IN THE HELICOPTER INDUSTRY Leonardo sees its Swiss subsidiary as an incubator for new technologies for VTOL aircraft. © Leonardo Helicopters

New Technologies Make Helicopters Quieter, More Efficient, and Faster… The helicopter industry appears to be under pressure in some areas due to the rise of Urban Air Mobility vehicles. All manufacturers are working on breakthrough technologies that will make helicopters more efficient and increase their performance. At EUROPEAN ROTORS in November, in Cologne, Germany, visitors will have the opportunity to see some of these innovations.

36 HELICOPTER BUYER EUROPE AUGUST 2022

BELL TEXTRON

LEONARDO

Bell Textron, Inc. is currently seeing with the Bell 505 that investments in new technologies lead to success on the market: The manufacturer has delivered more than 360 of the newly developed single-engine light turbine helicopter in just a few years. New systems that make flying safer, easier, and cheaper are arguments for many customers to justify switching from an older helicopter model to a new one. Bell is currently researching an electrically powered tail-rotor system for helicopters in collaboration with France’s Safran Group. A proofof-concept system has been flying on a Bell 429 in Canada since May 2019. The patented Electrically Distributed Anti-Torque (EDAT) system consists of four shrouded rotors, each driven by its own electric motor. Each rotor has four blades that are nonadjustable. The new system is controlled via fly-by-wire. The electric motors respond extremely quickly and provide the thrust needed at any given time by constantly changing speeds. Bell believes EDAT is quieter, lighter, more reliable and safer than conventional tail-rotors because it does not require a shaft or gearbox. The Bell 429 EDAT is purely a proof-of-concept aircraft. Only after completion of the tests will the manufacturer decide whether and in what form the new tail-rotor system can find its way into production helicopters.

Italian manufacturer Leonardo is also working on several innovative projects and is thus actively shaping the future of VTOL aviation. The manufacturer has been developing the AW609 civil tiltrotor aircraft since the mid-1990s. Initially with Bell as a programme partner, and since 2012 on its own. Thanks to its forward-tilting rotors, the AW609 combines the advantages of a helicopter with the cruise speed of a turboprop aircraft. Leonardo expects to certify the AW609 in the near future. At Heli-Expo in March, in Dallas, Texas, the manufacturer signed a contract with an unnamed European customer for the sale of four AW609s. The customer plans to use the aircraft for VIP transport and utility flights on various missions, according to Leonardo. In the light helicopter sector, Leonardo has acquired and Swiss manufacturer Kopter. The company is expected to drive innovation in this market segment in the future as a centre of excellence for light helicopters. Leonardo sees its Swiss subsidiary as an incubator for new technologies for vertical take-off and landing aircraft. In this context, the development of new hybrid and electric propulsion systems plays an important role as part of Leonardo’s strategic business plan, ‘Be Tomorrow 2030’.

EUROPEAN ROTORS 2022

AIRBUS HELICOPTERS Airbus Helicopters' RACER (Rapid And CostEffective Rotorcraft) technology project aims to make helicopters more efficient, quieter and, above all, faster. RACER is designed for a cruising speed of 400 km/h (216 knots) and is being developed as part of the European Clean Sky 2 research programme. A total of 40 partners from 13 nations are working on RACER, including research organisations such as France's ONERA and Germany's DLR. RACER is scheduled to fly in the fourth quarter of this year. The prototype of the high-speed helicopter is currently undergoing final assembly at Airbus Helicopters in Marignane, France. In addition to a main rotor, two five-blade propellers from MTPropeller mounted laterally on box-wings provide the necessary propulsion. The booms are made of carbon fibre composites and profiled, as they also provide lift during forward flight. The tailboom has a special feature in that it is not symmetrical in cross-section. The right-hand side of the tailboom in the direction of flight was designed with a cantilever, while the left-hand side slopes almost straight down. This offers aerodynamic advantages, because the tailboom thus acts like an aerofoil and makes optimum use of the downwash of the main rotor. In hover, this is expected to

improve the helicopter’s performance by up to ten percent, according to the manufacturer. Although the RACER is purely a technology demonstrator that will not go into series production in this form, the high-speed helicopter was designed to be as practical as possible. For example, despite the lateral propellers, safe winch operation should also be possible. The RACER project is not only about new speed ranges for helicopters but is, above all, about technologies that reduce helicopter fuel consumption. For example, the Eco-Mode system from engine manufacturer Safran Helicopter Engines aims to minimise fuel consumption by shutting down one of the two Aneto 1X engines during cruise flight. In addition, RACER is intended to be a particularly quiet and low-vibration aircraft despite its top performance. The technical possibilities for improving helicopters are far from exhausted. Even if in the future eVTOL aircraft take over tasks that today can only be performed by helicopters, the latter are nevertheless irreplaceable in many areas of operation.

EUROPEAN ROTORS – The VTOL Show and Safety Conference is where the entire rotorcraft industry meets to grow its business and discuss rotorcraft safety and sustainability. For the second time, the European Helicopter Association (EHA) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) are teaming up to create an exceptional showcase for the European VTOL branch: Industry, operators and the regulator are coming together and discussing the future of vertical flight. EUROPEAN ROTORS is the unique platform for the industry driven by the leading OEMs to do business and to share knowledge in a comprehensive educational programme. The renowned EASA Rotorcraft and VTOL Symposium has been integrated into the event and focuses on the latest rotorcraft and VTOL developments from a safety perspective. The unique concept of EUROPEAN ROTORS is augmented by certified training sessions, best-practice seminars and workshops. Another feature is the hybrid character as the show, in that it is supported by a virtual event providing additional information on the exhibitors and offering digital conference topics. EUROPEAN ROTORS is shaped by a steering committee which consists of leading members of the EHA board, representing the industry, the national associations, and EASA. The show is designed to empower the entire rotorcraft community to meet the challenges of the future and highlights the contribution VTOL operations deliver to the European community.

In addition, when equipped with the optional yawaxis control, the GFC 600H can hold heading in the hover. GFC 600H integrates with the G500H TXi flight displays and GTN or GTN Xi navigators, using navigation information to automatically fly approaches, enroute navigation, fully coupled missed-approach procedures including holds, as well as search and rescue patterns.

Garmin Achieves EASA Approval for GFC 600H FCS for AS350 Helicopters Garmin has gained European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) approval for its GFC 600H flight control system (FCS) for AS350 helicopters, “providing a cost-effective flight control solution that reduces pilot workload and improves mission effectiveness.” The GFC 600H provides a number of helicoptertailored safety features, including attitude-hold with speed stability, hover-assist mode, Garmin Helicopter Electronic Stability and Protection (HESP), dedicated return-to-level (LVL) mode, as well as overspeed and low-speed protection. The FCS features a console-mounted mode controller with push-button controls and night-

vision goggle (NVG) compatible display. Its robust architecture allows for both 2-axis and 3-axis configurations to provide the features and handling characteristics needed for a helicopter, says Garmin. Integrated smart servos provide pitch and roll inputs as commanded by the system. The collective sensor and the optionally available third servo provide yaw axis control capability to provide smooth flight control adjustments when the pilot moves the collective. Digitally controlled, high-performance servos allow for faster, crisper, more powerful response, which enables the GFC 600H to perform with “smooth efficiency and advanced capability.”

The advanced attitude and heading reference system (AHRS) technology combined with redundant, cross-checking sensors of the GFC 600H support smooth handling throughout the flight envelope. In addition, attitude-hold mode reduces pilot workload by maintaining a specified altitude, while also providing inputs to help stabilise the helicopter when hand-flying. Garmin says the system is “designed with the pilot in mind”, incorporating cyclic-mounted trim controls to allow for “seamless control of the system without taking a hand off of the flight controls during basic operations.” Additional modes include altitude hold, altitude select, vertical speed, indicated airspeed and heading select. “The GFC 600H offers tremendous safety tools including overspeed protection and low-speed protection as well as Garmin H-ESP to help the pilot remain within a safe flight envelope when hand-flying the helicopter,” said Garmin, adding that H-ESP “works in all modes – even when the system is not engaged – and can be manually disabled to allow for manoeuvring flight.” The dedicated LVL button included on the GFC 600H can be engaged by the pilot to return to straight-and-level flight, “helping to avoid potential disorientation in degraded visual environments (DVE), such as inadvertent entry into instrument meteorological conditions (IMC). Garmin has also implemented additional GFC 600H pilot training and supporting materials to allow for updated pilot licensing as required by the EASA certification.

ASL Camguard™ is an advanced oil supplement, F.A.A. accepted for use in most piston aircraft engines. Camguard is formulated to safeguard the investment in your aircraft engine by addressing the complex and interrelated problems of corrosion, carbon deposits and mechanical wear. Camguard combats corrosion by leaving a continuous film of inhibitor on metal surfaces. Camguard halts deposit formation, leaving your engine clean and parts free to move. So whether you fly a little or a lot, Camguard always pays dividends with decreased aircraft engine maintenance costs. Just adding 5% of ASL Camguard to your oil at every oil change provides peace of mind that comes with knowing your investment is protected.

Micro Vortex Generators

Micro Vortex Generators are small aluminium blades placed in a spanwise line aft of the leading edge of the wing and on tail surfaces. They control airflow over the upper surface of the wing by creating vortices that energize the boundary layer. This results in improved performance and control authority at low airspeeds and high angles of attack.

The Benefits of Micro VGs • Lower Lift Off Speed • Lower Stall Speeds • Improved Controllability • Improved Characteristics • Improved Safety • S.T.O.L. Benefits • 1 Day Installation
