With Continental Motors through the Year 2014! Activity Highlights: Common rail technology, direct injection, turbo charging, liquid cooling and an advanced reduction gear system complete the state-ofthe-art design features of the new engine. Continental has started the type certification process for its 300 Series Diesel aircraft engine. The engine is expected to be certified in 2016. Also in July CMG announced it received Type Certificate Validation on July 3, 2014 from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). This is the fourth Jet-A diesel engine manufactured by Continental Motors to receive certification from the Chinese aviation authorities.
“This year, Continental Motors – a subsidiary of China-based AVIC International Holding Corporation, made a clear commitment to the General Aviation community to offer a full range of aircraft engines, establish global operations and offer unrivalled service.” Foundation of CMG and CMB AVIC International Holding Corporation (AVIC Int’l) announced in April that it is consolidating its aircraft engine businesses under a single corporate structure to continue to build a global, customer service oriented one-stop-shop for aircraft engines. The newly established “Continental Motors Group, Ltd.,”
(CMG) as a wholly-owned subsidiary of AVIC Int’l, is based in Hong Kong to integrate the marketing, sales, service, manufacturing, and development activities of its aircraft engine businesses. CMG’s goal is to think globally and act locally as integrated operating as one team and marketed as one brand. In 2011 AVIC Int’l acquired the American based, world famous, piston engine manufacturer, Continental Motors, Inc. (CMI) and its sister division Mattituck Services, Inc. (re-named to Continental Motors Services, Inc. in summer 2014), a recognized provider of aircraft and engine MRO services to the piston powered aircraft fleet. In 2013 the assets of the innovative German based Thielert Aircraft Engines were acquired by AVIC Int’l and incorporated under the name Technify Motors GmbH (TMG). Finally, in early 2014, AVIC Int’l has formed
Continental Motors Beijing Corporations, Ltd. in Beijing, China to act as the marketing, sales, service, and distributor of the products and services offered by the different members of the Continental Motors Group. Now, possessing four major business units in three global operating bases, CMG is the only global player capable of designing, manufacturing and maintaining both gasoline and diesel piston engines.
The collaboration of Piper Aircraft, Inc. and CMG obtained on April 1, 2014 the Supplemental Type Certificate for Piper Archer aircraft powered by the Continental Diesel engine CD-155. The companies have completed all development and flight test work. The prototype aircraft was on display first during Aero Friedrichshafen and performed a demonstration tour throughout Europe, including Germany, Spain, France, Italy and the United Kingdom during this year’s summer.
For this reason in May the CMG hosted the first European Aviation and Flight School Congress in Speyer, Germany. Keynote speakers of important industry’s player gave an insight in the latest developments on the flight school market and regulations. The attendees made intensive use of the opportunity to test the latest FMX simulators and diesel aircraft.
Green Speed Cup Won Fuel efficiency and environmental friendly propulsion systems are today’s main challenges in aviation. In order to measure the industry’s progress in balancing performance with fuel economy, the third Green Speed Cup was organized on June 28th and 29th in Strausberg, Germany. The Continental Motors Group participated for the third time with the company owned Diamond DA-40 equipped with a Continental CD-100 series Diesel engine. As outcome CMG saw a further success for its diesel engagement and the Green Speed Cup was won by the CMG team.
After a year and half of testing its dual site flight training approach, CMG’s flight school unit Zulu Flight Training is exporting its model to Europe. Zulu Flight Training displayed the full-motion simulator solution they use as an integral part of their training method at AERO in Friedrichshafen and at the Flight School Congress. A second site was established in Geneva, Switzerland by the end of 2014. CMG’s commitment to the flight school business with its diesel engines resulted in expanding diesel fleets. E.g. Aerodynamics Malaga S.L. (Aerodynamics), a leading Spanish flight training school, will retrofit sixteen aircraft with CD-135/155. Also Africair, Inc. extended its orders of CD-155 retrofit engine kits from three to ten. Africair equips new diesel powered Cessna 172 Skyhawks for Ethiopian Airlines Aviation Academy.
In July CMG announced that it has achieved first flight of its 300 horsepower Jet A fueled aircraft piston engine. Designed for single and twin-engine aircraft, the CD-300 is a 300 horsepower class engine that adds to the already successful 100 and 200 series engines in the Continental Diesel lineup. The company’s flying test-bed exhibited rates of climb and cruise performance that exceeded engineer’s expectations. The CD-300 series engine has three-liter displacement and generates up to 310 HP (228 kW) at 2,300 rpm for low operating noise. Continental equips all of its CD engines with true single level control and an electronic engine management system.

High-frequency flyers in particular, such as flying schools or aero clubs, benefit from the Continental Diesel engines, which operates on widely available jet fuel. Pilots operating aircraft in regions of the world where avgas is hardly available will appreciate the high efficiency of the diesel engines. Continental diesel engines have generated over 4.2 million cumulated flying hours with exceptional reliability. CMG supports the requirements and needs of flight schools, aero clubs and flyers in remote areas or areas with high fuel prices.
The CD-230, a member of the 200 series Jet-A diesel piston engines produced by Continental Motors is an air cooled, boxer style engine producing 230 HP at 2200 rpm. Obtaining the Validated Type Certificate in China makes this engine readily available to companies developing aircraft to meet the potential of this rapidly expanding market. It also demonstrates the growing capabilities available in the Continental Motors’ team to work with Regulatory authorities throughout the world.
Development of Diesel Business The Continental Motors Group has often declared its commitment to the diesel engine as a forward-looking drive concept for aircraft, as evidenced by the acquisition and inclusion of diesel aircraft engines in its product portfolio. In the year 2014 CMG passed milestone after milestone in the development of the diesel aircraft market.

We offer a regular monthly information day at our offices at Gloucester airport. We aim for a maximum of 6 people so as to provide individual attention. There will be a range of TK course materials from various suppliers on display. Everyone will get a chance to see the simulator and our purpose equipped IR skill test aircraft. By the end of the day you will really understand what the various ratings offer and what is involved in gaining them. If you would like to have a logable flight in either the simulator or the aircraft then these can be booked in advance. We ask for a transferrable deposit of £40. A substantial lunch will be provided and £30 refunded on the day. We just want to discourage ‘no shows’ and cover the cost of the lunch. The aircraft was displayed where it was originally launched near the slip-way of the Albany Boathouse, The replica Sopwith Dolphin at the site in Kingston upon Thames from formerly owned by the where it first took to the water. famous Turk family on April 7 1914, after being transported from the Canbury Park Road Sopwith manufacturing site. Among those present at the anniversary were - Howard Pixton’s daughter Stella Pixton, Tommy Sopwith, the son of Sir Thomas Sopwith and Tom Dimsdale, the great grandson of Harry Hawker, generally acknowledged as the designer of the Sopwith Tabloid.

The A-20 thought to have remained in good condition because it ‘was completely buried in mud’. A former Soviet Air Force Douglas Havoc A-20G has been recovered from the Baltic Sea where it has laid from 1944. The USA provided these aircraft as part of their lend-lease programme. The recovery was made after te bomber was found by chance by the Polish Maritime Institute and the aircraft was then taken to the Polish Aviation Museum where vital conservation work will be carried out.

Meteor Still Works
In mid-September, divers from the Croatian Department of Underwater Archaeology and Conversation Institute discovered a virtually intact Junkers Ju 87R of the Italian Air Force, shot down during WW2. Plans are now underway to raise the ‘plane before restoration work to put it on display at the Army Museum in Central Croatia.

The Kent Battle of Britain Museum at Hawkinge, UK has acquired a Boulton-Paul Defiant replica, which is currently in store at the RAF Museum Cosford. The replica Defiant has an original 4-gun turret, contains parts from several salvaged aircraft and took 15 volunteers, 50,000 man hours to complete.
The Yankee Air Museum in Michigan will become the National Museum of Aviation and Technology at Historic Willow Run as part of a major overhaul. The museum will move to a portion of the former Willow Run Bomber Plant in Ypsilanti Township. It will also launch a campaign to raise money to create new programs and revamp exhibits as the museum expands its focus beyond World War II avionics. The new museum could open as early as the summer of 2017.

The business move, which widens Air BP’s market reach, has been undertaken in response to international customer research that took place over the summer this year. The study looked at how customers interacted with fuel companies and explored means of enhancing the experience. It revealed that a large number of pilots and operation teams expressed a preference to work with a minimum amount of direct suppliers when organising flights. This new collaboration provides a seamless means of managing a number of operational issues at a single source so is aiming to respond to that request.

The agreement was ratified this week at North America’s premier aviation event, the National Business Aviation Association 2014 (NBAA2014) meeting, held in Orlando, USA. This will provide customers with a more efficient approach to flight preparation as information about fuel purchasing will be available within the overall flight planning process. Under the terms of the relationship Air BP will work closely with RocketRoute to integrate information about access to Air BP’s worldwide fuel network onto their system. As a result the end user, whether it be corporate pilot, flight department or private pilot, will be able to access all information relating to fuel uptake whilst formulating the overall flight plan. The aim of the collaboration is to increase efficiency, save time and improve the overall business aviation experience for the end user.
Air BP supports over 600 locations worldwide With Sterling Card acceptance and the RocketRoute system will display all of these airports. As a Cloud based information system pilots with tablet, laptop or other connected device will be able to access the information wherever they are in the world. This will be the first in a number of Air BP features to be integrated into the RocketRoute system. Gulfstream has introduced an all-new family of business jets: the Gulfstream G500 and G600. The two new aircraft optimize speed, wide-cabin comfort and efficiency to offer customers exceptional performance with advanced safety features. The clean-sheet aircraft were announced just prior to last month’s NBAA meeting in Orlando at an event that saw the first G500 taxied up under its own power and a nearly-70- foot mock-up of the G600 revealed. “Today’s announcement demonstrates the power of General Dynamics’ consistent and disciplined investment in both Gulfstream’s research and development and manufacturing facilities,” said General Dynamics chairman and CEO Phebe Novakovic. “The effect of that investment is manifest in these two airplanes.” The G500 is designed to fly 5,000nm at Mach 0.85 or 3,800nm at Mach 0.90, while the G600 will travel 6,200nm at Mach 0.85 or 4,800nm at Mach 0.90. The maximum operating speed for both aircraft is Mach 0.925 – equal to that of the G650/G650ER. Larry Flynn, president, Gulfstream announced, “The G500 and G600 build upon the technology present in our G650 and…G650ER. Gulfstream’s revolutionary new Symmetry Flight Deck will be utilized in the cockpit, incorporating cutting-edge active control side-sticks, integrated touchscreen controllers, a next-generation enhanced vision system and Honeywell Primus Epic avionics. “The active control sidesticks enable both pilots to be consistently on the same page, enhancing safety,” noted Dan Nale, senior vice president, Programs, Engineering and Test, Gulfstream. “No other business aircraft on the market has this feature.” The G500 and G600 incorporate a third generation Gulfstream EVS, the Synthetic VisionPrimary Flight Display system and HeadUp Display II. Similar to the G650/G650ER, the G500 and G600 offer a full three-axis digital fly-by-wire system with benefits that include flight-envelope protection, stability augmentation, increased redundancy and reduced maintenance. The G500 and G600 are powered by versions of the new Pratt & Whitney Canada PW800 series engine, delivering excellent fuel efficiency (along with a Gulfstream-designed wing), fewer emissions and engine noise, and have a 10,000-hour time between overhaul with no midlife inspection for lower operating cost.
The first flight of the G500 is scheduled for 2015. Gulfstream projects it will receive type certification from the FAA and EASA in 2017 and begin deliveries in 2018. The G600 flight test program is expected to begin approximately 12 to 18 months after the G500’s, and entry-into-service is projected for 2019.
OTHER GULFSTREAM NEWS In other Gulfstream news, the flagship Gulfstream G650ER has been certified by the FAA. The certification verifies the airworthiness of the aircraft’s design and clears the way for G650ER deliveries to begin before year-end. The new G650ER can travel 7,500 nautical miles at Mach 0.85 and 6,400nm at Mach 0.90, representing an increase of up to 500nm over the range of the G650. Like the G650, the G650ER has a maximum speed of Mach 0.925. The G650ER shares the same cabin, avionics and systems as the G650. Current G650 owners and order-holders can upgrade their original G650 to a G650ER. Thomas Anderson, meanwhile, has been named director of Product Support for Gulfstream’s Long Beach Service Center where he will oversee operations, reporting to Becky Johnson. Airbus will provide technical and certification support, including the assignment of senior engineering staff to Aerion’s expanding development organization. Aerion and Airbus Defence and Space professionals will work together at Aerion’s new and larger engineering offices in Reno, Nevada.

This addition was created to meet the specific needs of operators needing to move heavy helicopters on oil platforms fitted with landing nets. To meet such challenge this model is equipped with much larger pneumatic wheels to roll over such thick rope. estimated the UAS market would open up in about three-to-five years. When it does, there will be many opportunities for flight departments and business aviation professionals. “One of the outstanding questions with UAS is having a trained pilot to operate them,” said aviation attorney Paul Lange, “with sufficient knowledge so you don’t stumble upon Class B or Class D airspace. So, when companies want to develop and test UAS, it’s actually very easy for them to go and get trained pilots from the flight department.” There are many technological hurdles to overcome for UAS to be fully integrated into U.S. airspace, but the business aviation industry is not short on solutions.
“Make no doubt about it: unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) are coming, and they will offer an amazing opportunity for flight departments to expand their responsibilities and become more relevant to their companies,” said Brad Hayden, president and CEO of Robotic Skies, in an Oct. 22 panel at NBAA’s Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAA2014). As covered in a previous education session, commercial use of UAS is currently prohibited in U.S. airspace. As they always have been, model airplanes flown by hobbyists are allowed, but the industry is waiting for FAA regulations to permit UAS used for business. That business could be anything, from film making to crop dusting, public safety to rural medical services, but panelists said commercial uses for UAS often fall into “the three Ds” – jobs that human beings would find dull, dangerous or dirty. As their cost comes down, UAS will also be able to do some jobs more cheaply. “Nixie” is a wrist-mounted camera that unfolds into a quad motor UAS.

“The dialogues I’ve had with folks here on the exhibit floor the past couple days have really given me a lot of ideas,” said McDuffee. “As we construct a business model to grow the commercial UAS segment, I’ve learned about a lot of opportunities here at NBAA2014 that we frankly hadn’t thought about.” Some of those opportunities include outsourcing aircraft and avionics certification, UAS operator training, and maintenance for unmanned aircraft. Just as UAS will create new opportunities in the business aviation industry, it will also make it safer.
“The commercial opportunities are not here today,” said Paul McDuffee, vice president of government relations and strategy for Insitu, a maker of UAS, “but they are beginning to emerge.”

Bristow ramp up SAR S92 fleet in readiness for national UK contract In March 2013 it was announced that Bristow Helicopters will take over as the single operator for SAR helicopters around the UK, with an operational fleet of 10 Sikorsky S92 and 10 AgustaWestland AW189 helicopters. In fact, their business model requires 11 of each type to help cover for maintenance. Bristow already have four S92s operating for SAR in the UK, so another seven were needed.
