SAFETY AWARD Vinny Marchese and Ed Heaney win the Presidents’ Safety Award! On January 28th, 2015, Vinny Marchese III and Ed Heaney received the Presidents’ Safety Award from Willbros. This honor is given annually to an operations employee from each segment of the Willbros group and is based on the following criteria: Innovation and learning, continuous improvement, making safety unconditional, straight talk on safety and sustainable safety solutions. Their commitment to Supervisor Safety training, their alignment between Operations and Safety, measuring safety actions in the field and caring for the well being of all Integrity Solutions employees has provided the foundation for our continued success and improvement in safety. The
OFFICE SAFETY TRAINING BECAUSE IT’S NOT ALL PAPER CUTS AND CARPAL TUNNEL
Despite common beliefs that the office provides a safe environment in which to work, many hazards exist which cause countless injuries and health problems each year among office workers. It has been said that the rate of office incidents declines when office workers are informed of potential hazards and safe work practices. Sabrina Esposito, Manager of HSE Communications and Compliance, along with Daryl Scott-Edwards, Contract Coordinator and the Office Representative for the Integrity Solutions Safety Steering Committee, joined forces to train over 70 office employees in January at the Corporate Office in Hauppauge, NY. Topics such as proper lifting techniques, office
ergonomics, slip, trip and fall prevention techniques and emergency evacuation procedures were discussed and demonstrated. Photos of real-life hazards in the office were taken and included in the presentation, as well as relatable, high-impact safety videos. Office employees were also trained on our current Safety programs, The Smith System [driving] program and The A3 [hazard identification] process, as well as OSHA Regulatory topics such as Hazard Communication, Safety Data Sheets, Accident Prevention Signs and Tags, etc. The training was well received by all and will serve as a stepping stone for future Office Safety programs here at Integrity Solutions!

PROJECT: CIS Indirect Inspection Survey - South Texas WHAT WE DO: The primary objective of the CIS indirect inspection survey is to provide a cathodic protection and encroachment survey of their pipelines in south Texas. This project utilizes teams of Willbros Integrity Solutions employees to walk the pipeline, measure the effectiveness of cathodic protection systems and evaluate, measure and document any objects that encroach upon the pipeline right of way.
SAFETY: Employee, David Schrunk, Uses Stop Work & A3! Before
HOW WE DO IT: Late last month, Willbros Integrity Solutions employee, David Schrunk, was walking through a section of the right of way on the CIS indirect inspection survey project, performing the encroachment survey ahead of the cathodic protection crews.
After
David described this particular section as being approximately ¼ mile long and overgrown with headhigh brush. In other words, it was nearly impossible to see the ground in his path. Understanding the potential danger, David was using his Zephyr pole to probe the ground in front of him as he walked. As he walked along, he came to a point where his pole didn’t touch the ground. Thinking that it was just a small hole, he stopped and continued to probe. Instead of it being a small hole, he had discovered two abandoned valve vaults approximately 6 feet deep that had caved in! Needless to say,

had he fallen in one of these, he could have been seriously injured. Being the leader that he is, David took every available step to protect himself, his team and the public from this hazard. David grabbed a weed eater and cleared the area, painted the area to alert anyone else and notified his teammates and the client of the hazard. David’s use of the A3 process and his knowledge of the hazards and mitigations of walking prevented a potentially serious injury. He saw the hazards, formulated a plan to manage them and stuck to it! His actions are a great example of how personal leadership for safety can have a large impact on himself and his team and demonstrates the C2 cultural beliefs of Owning It and Process Matters.

DISTRACTED DRIVING! It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that texting and driving is dangerous. But plenty of people continue to do it. Even with all the stories of tragic car accidents happening as a direct result of distracted driving, teens and adults are still texting at the wheel! Time is a powerful force. We live by it; it keeps everything from happening all at once; it flies when we’re having fun; it slips through our fingers unnoticed; we wish for more. It’s been said that timing is everything. Don’t believe me? Ask the Olympic athlete who missed the podium by a mere tenth of a second. Ask the receiver who dropped what would have been the game-winning pass in the end zone as the remaining seconds ticked off the clock. Or, ask the parent who lost a child mid-sentence due to texting behind the wheel. It only takes a few seconds, but those seconds can change everything.
If you could prevent an accident you knew was going to happen, would you do it? By committing to putting your phone out of sight when your car is in drive, you can save a life. Maybe even your own. STRETCH IT OUT!
Cubicals have created an unhealthy environment for office workers who spend most of their day hunched over a computer. Employees who drive for many hours are subject to similar dangers. Three of the most common ailments among sedentary employees are headaches, neck strain and back pain. It’s important for employees to understand how long periods of sitting can lead to poor posture and muscle imbalance. In today’s 9+ hour workdays and lunch at the desk, it’s imperative for employees to get out of their offices and moving more. Employees who perform simple tasks (stretching, walking more, taking the stairs, etc.) will be more productive than those who work non-stop.

TOWER SERVICES EMPLOYEES JEROMIE HETER & WAYNE SMITH “Earlier this month disaster was averted by two quick thinking tower climbers, Jeromie Heter and Wayne Smith. These two employees were called out to do a path alignment on a micro wave dish, (this usually happens in high wind conditions that blow the dish enough to move it off path).
Wayne and Jeromie made the appropriate calls to the Tower Division’s management and Safety department. Management contacted the tower owner about the problem and they sent out one of their crews to take the tower down before it fell down.
The two were called out early in the morning when it was still somewhat dark out. Wayne began climbing the tower and noticed that it didn’t feel quite right. Wayne got off the tower and asked Jeromie to check it out. Jeromie climbed up and found that one of the 3 tower legs was completely broken off! He quickly and carefully got off the tower and the two of them left the site.
This is just one example of how their observations and quick thinking prevented what could have been a catastrophic collapse. Wayne Smith and Jeromie Heter both successfully employed their Stop Work Authority by recognizing an unsafe condition and stopping the work. They have been recognized as our company’s Safety Stars and are endlessly thanked. This event clearly shows the value of following procedures and taking appropriate action. It sends a resounding message of the safety culture Integrity Solutions is proud of!”

“I truly feel that if everyone had this training, the roads would be much safer.” “I would like to share my experience on how Smith training recently came in handy. While traveling home from a college basketball tournament in Maine last weekend, I experienced several situations where my Smith Training came into play, especially the “Aim High” method. The round trip was a total of 700 miles covering 6 states. Several locations on my trip had construction where a specific lane of the highway was closed. By looking ahead 15-25 seconds, I was able to see the traffic flow and shift lanes long before the upcoming lane closures. I avoided the “pack mentality” that most drivers have and always had an “out” when confronted with that

situation. I now pass my training onto my family members. On Sunday, 1/18, we were traveling home form Rhode Island and encountered freezing rain and black ice on the highway. There were several multicar pileups due to the changing road conditions. Again, using the “Aim High” method and getting the big picture, along with adjusting my speed accordingly, we were just fine. There were several times when I needed to use the cushion of space I left for myself, as well my horn to avoid an accident. I truly feel that if everyone had this training, the roads would be safer. Thanks to my Smith Training, my family and I are much safer behind the wheel!”

“I do my weekly A3 JSA’s, I have my A3 safety sticker on my dashboard and I carry my safety talisman (A3 Coin) in my pocket to keep my safety awareness fresh all day.” “I really enjoyed A3 training. The content was interesting and the delivery was very professional. It had real world examples as well as some humor thrown in. There was time in the session for participants to could ask questions and provide constructive input. We even had an ex-police officer in the class group who provided some interesting perspective from an officer’s point of view regarding how to behave at the scene of an accident. I especially like the committment to safety, reinforced by the Stop Work policy, the “what do you value in life” exercise and the existence of a Safety Steering Committee; that not only includes hourly workers but is chaired

by a front line field employee. I also picked up on the idea that it’s important not just to be trained, but to keep awareness high on an ongoing basis.
