Fourth-coming TV: NBC, PBS present premium Fourth of July entertainment

Independence Day is full of numbers. Last Fourth of July, Americans collectively spent an average of $7.7 billion on food, more than $2.4 billion on fireworks and consumed in excess of 150 million hot dogs to celebrate the 56 signatures marked on the Declaration of Independence in 1776 (per WalletHub.com). While the celebrations have been consistently growing in size and grandeur since the first Fourth of July parade in 1785 (held in Bristol, Rhode Island) — with the exception of times of turmoil, like the pandemic, of course — not all the festivities require revelers to leave their homes.

In fact, this Fourth of July, TV viewers can enjoy countless hours of patriotic entertainment, ranging from unique, televised festivals to special episodes of favorite TV shows and major Hollywood films — we’re looking at you “Independence Day” (1996) — across several networks. Among the most notable view-from-home programs are Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular on NBC and PBS’s “A Capitol Fourth,” which airs from the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C. As the events broadcast nationwide, however, please be sure to check your local listings for times and any additional information or local events.

Since Macy’s inaugural Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1924, New Yorkers have gathered to watch in awe of the pomp and circumstance. While the department store’s Fourth of July festivities don’t range quite as far back, their roots can be traced to a “pyrotechnic extravaganza” over the Hudson River on July 1, 1958, initially in celebration of the shop’s 100th anniversary. With approximately one million people in attendance that year, this fireworks spectacular gave rise to the festivities we know today.

First hosted by Macy’s in partnership with Disney in 1977, the vibrant display has become a staple for Americans in person and on television.

This year, the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular airs live from New York City’s East River on NBC and its streaming platform, Peacock. The 47th celebration of its kind, the event coordinators have promised “serious star power, electrifying performances and heart-pounding pyrotechnics.” While the complete list of stars taking part in the event has yet to be announced as of press time, significant information has been shared regarding the musical score and performance, presided over by musical director Ray Chew (whose credits include “Showtime at the Apollo,” “American Idol,” “Dancing With the Stars” and more).

“I am thrilled to be back to compose the fireworks score for the Macy’s team and NBC,” Chew said in a statement. “This year, we will recognize trailblazers as we celebrate our country’s independence through the voices of young people.”

Helping Chew to realize his vision for the score is the U.S. Army Field Band, accompanied by Sgt. First Class Kyra Dorn’s “incredibly soulful vocals” for “God Bless America” and other well-known pieces. Additionally, rappers, R&B artists and fellow Staff Sgts. Nicholas Feemster and Lamar Riddick take to the mic for a heartfelt rendition of “Sea to Shining Sea.”

Gauff looks to recreate Wimbledon magic

The lawns of the All England Club have been prepped for another chapter of Wimbledon history, as one of the tournament’s rising stars, Cori ‘Coco’ Gauff, gets set for what’s expected to be a thrilling showdown.

Born to parents with NCAA Division I backgrounds, the highest level for college athletes, she always had a warm push to involve herself in sports and make it a career. Gauff, at the young age of 19, has been cementing her name in the history books, putting on displays of her raw talent, relentless work ethic and raising the bar of expectations at every tournament.

She first put herself on the map at the 2019 Wimbledon Championships when she shocked the world by defeating the legendary Venus Williams in the first round as a 15-year-old wild card, securing a dominant 6-4, 6-4 victory. She became the youngest player to advance to the fourth round of Wimbledon since 1991. Shortly after, she took her talents to the U.S. Open, where she once again became the youngest player to advance to the third round since 1991, later losing to Naomi Osaka. Despite the early setbacks, Gauff remained determined to grow and continue pushing herself.

Starting off 2020 ranked at No. 67, Gauff reached the fourth round of the Australian Open, giving her three Grand Slam appearances in a row with at least a fourth-round finish. While she has still yet to accomplish the ultimate feat of winning a Grand Slam championship, she’s been knocking on the door consistently. Last season she recorded her best major singles finish when she reached the French Open final, losing to world No. 1 Iga Swiatek in straight sets.

As the tennis world turns its focus to London, Gauff carries not just her own hopes but also the spirit of tennis’s bright future. As she continues to refine her skills and gain accolades, she looks poised for a better outcome at this year’s Wimbledon Championship.

Q: Will the start of the new season of “Magnum P.I.” be delayed? – Jennifer Oliver, Kansas City, Mo.

A: Possibly, but it also could be moved up. Technically the second half of the Jay Hernandez-starring reboot’s fifth season, which NBC decided to split in two when it picked up the show after CBS’ cancellation of it, it is slated to begin at midseason after the completion of “Sunday Night Football” (as was the case this past winter).

The filming was done as if the series was making the complete season at once, per tradition, and the writers’ strike – which has led to delays in the making of other shows – may necessitate a need for the new “Magnum” episodes (which already have been filmed) sooner when the 2023-24 television season begins. Time, and the length of the strike and NBC’s programming needs, will tell.

Q: I enjoyed the HBO documentary about Mary Tyler Moore. When it showed the final credits of the last episode of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” she introduced Valerie Harper and Cloris Leachman to the studio audience as cast members. Hadn’t they left the show by then? – Ken Stoneman, via e-mail

A: Yes. They returned for the 1977 finale in guest appearances in their respective roles as Rhoda Morgenstern and Phyllis Lindstrom, who were brought back to Minneapolis-St. Paul by Lou Grant (Edward Asner) to cheer Mary Richards (Moore) after she and many other staff members of WJM-TV’s news department were fired over low ratings. Harper had left the series in 1974 to star in the spinoff “Rhoda,” while Leachman – who appeared on more of a recurring basis – also got her own spinoff with “Phyllis” in 1975. Interestingly, that final end-credits sequence hasn’t been shown very often, since the last CBS repeat of the episode leaves it out … as do syndicated reruns of the story, which literally is titled “The Last Show.”

Since it involves a famous bicentennial boxing bout, the Fourth of July is an appropriate time for a return visit from “Rocky.” AMC presents the 1976 Oscar winner for Best Picture on Tuesday, July 4, and Wednesday, July 5, with Sylvester Stallone starring in his own script as Rocky Balboa, a supposedly washed-up Philadelphia fighter who gets a surprising chance at a heavyweight championship against titleholder Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers).

“Rocky” became iconic rather quickly for its theme song (“Gonna Fly Now,” composed by Bill Conti) and such scenes as Rocky training for the big fight by running up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Co-stars also include Burgess Meredith, Talia Shire and Burt Young, and AMC is showing several of the “Rocky” sequels (which eventually set up a “Creed” franchise) as well.

Cake or con: Season 2 of Netflix’s ‘Is it Cake?’ makes deception delectable

Designed to trick even the most trained eye, illusion cakes have become an internet sensation, with shows like “Is It Cake?” reaching massive audiences of dedicated viewers, and popular TikTokers and YouTubers like Jonny Cakes (Jonny Manganello, who competed in Season 1 of “Is It Cake?”) creating hyperrealistic baked goods for thousands upon thousands of followers and subscribers online. These reality-bending cakes delight and confuse, and for fans looking to bite into more – of what’s hopefully cake – Season 2 of the cake decorating series, aptly named “Is it Cake, Too?” is now available to stream on Netflix.

The series features eight new episodes, all hosted by “Saturday Night Live’s” Mikey Day, as he returns to the (very real) kitchen for his second season driving this – as Netflix calls it – “baking competition that makes you question the very fabric of reality.”

“Prepare for toilets, yoga mats, guitars, rollerblades and even a replica of the Mona Lisa to get sliced and diced in the process,” Netflix wrote in a recent news release, “as each week the cake artists put their incredibly niche skills to the test.”

The competition begins with 10 hopeful bakers, each faced with their first challenge before the eggs, butter and milk ever come

out. First, the contestants – all of whom specialize in hyperrealistic baking themselves – must identify the illusion cake hidden among a group of random, everyday objects – like, for instance, within a fullscale replica of Michael Day’s college dorm room. Only the bakers able to guess correctly will move on to the main competition.

From there, the remaining few must utilize their strangely specific skills to create their own illusion cakes within an eighthour period. The cakes will then be presented to a panel of celebrity guest judges, who will have 20 seconds to determine which, in a line of near-identical objects, is actually cake. Those who fail to trick the judges will be eliminated from the game, and in the end, only one trickster-baker will be left, crowned champion of “Is it Cake, Too?”

This season, guest judges include Kate Flannery (“The Office”), Joel McHale (“Community”), Kirby Howell-Baptiste (“Barry”), Taylor Tomlinson (“Taylor Tomlinson: Look at You,” 2022), Anna Camp (“Pitch Perfect,” 2012), Chiney Ogwumike of the Los Angeles Sparks and many more, who put all five senses to the test as they judge creations on “Is It Cake, Too?,” now available to stream on Netflix.

truly iconic performances as James Cagney — rightfully awarded an Oscar for his work here — does alternately energetic and, particularly in the home stretch, quietly affecting work. The film was released just a few months before Cohan’s death, and it’s said that he saw and enjoyed Cagney’s portrayal. An annual holiday staple of Turner Classic Movies, the film runs there again Tuesday, July 4.

“1776” (1972): this surely merits inclusion here. Produced by former studio mogul Jack L. Warner, who was no stranger to patriotic movies, this adaptation of the stage hit — retaining much of the original Broadway cast, very much to its credit — gave a musical slant to the signing of the Declaration of Independence by John Adams (played by William Daniels), Benjamin Franklin (Howard Da Silva), Thomas Jefferson (Ken Howard) and others. And yes, TCM serves this up again as well on Tuesday, July 4.
