Jack Ryan has had several screen lives, via a variety of actors, and his latest one is about to begin its final round.

John Krasinski (“The Office”) returns as the CIA analyst who typically finds himself in the thick of the action as the fourth and final season of the Prime Video adventure-drama

“Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” premieres Friday, June 30. Arriving six months after Season 3 began — an unusually short span between seasons for a streaming series — the program will debut two of its six new episodes each Friday, and the concluding story tests Ryan in terms of enemies both foreign and domestic.

Now the acting deputy director of the Central Intelligence Agency, Ryan is concerned with the behavior of his own operatives as he starts a probe of possible corruption. Before long, though, he discovers several black ops situations that might make America vulnerable to plots from overseas … with the union of a drug cartel and a terrorist group potentially spelling very bad things for the United States and challenging Ryan’s strongly held beliefs in right, wrong and justice.

Krasinski also is among the executive producers of “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan,” on which novelist Tom Clancy is given the same credit posthumously. Other returning cast members include Wendell Pierce – a Tony Award nominee this year for “Death of a Salesman” – as Ryan’s former supervisor, James Greer, and Abbie Cornish (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” 2017) in a reprise of her Season 1 role as Ryan’s girlfriend (and, per the Clancy books, eventual wife), Dr. Cathy Mueller. The new season also features Michael Pena (“Ant-Man,” 2015) as Domingo Chavez, the protagonist of an intended spinoff series.

As mentioned, “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” is the latest iteration of a franchise that dates back to 1987 in print (“Patriot Games” was the first novel) and to 1990 on film. “The Hunt for Red October” was the initial Ryan movie, and though he certainly was a major character as played by Alec Baldwin (“The Departed,” 2006), top billing went to the star who played the character Ryan was investigating: Sean Connery (“Dr. No,” 1962) as Soviet submarine commander Marko Ramius.

The film was an enormous hit for its time, making more than $200 million worldwide, and one can only speculate whether the result would have been the same if the originally intended casting — Kevin Costner (“Yellowstone”) as Ryan and Klaus Maria Brandauer

(“Never Say Never Again,” 1983) as Ramius — had stuck. The outcome virtually demanded a follow-up, and that arrived in 1992 with the screen version of “Patriot Games,” but with a significant change in the actor playing Ryan.

Stories differ as to why Baldwin didn’t return, mostly related to the timing of his commitment to a Broadway revival of “A Streetcar Named Desire,” but Harrison Ford, star of the Stars Wars and Indiana Jones franchises, who had built a reputation for brainy action tales, got the part next. And not just for one film, but for two. It turned out to be a good move, since the picture grossed slightly under $180 million internationally in its original theatrical run.

That made Paramount Pictures feel good about retaining Ford for 1994’s “Clear and Present Danger,” though Clancy hadn’t been happy with the “Patriot Games” movie and had considered withholding the screen rights to other Ryan stories. (A considerable financial incentive for the author reportedly resolved that hurdle.) Despite problems caused by Mexican-location unrest and earthquake-damaged footage, all turned out well, with “Clear and Present Danger” becoming the franchise’s top-grossing entry with $216 million worldwide.

By the time the movies were ready to revisit Ryan, Ford had dropped out over script disagreements, and 2002’s “The Sum of All Fears” was revised to be an origin story – along the lines of Daniel Craig’s James Bond debut in “Casino Royale” – with the younger Ben Affleck (“Air,” 2023) playing Ryan. Interestingly, Affleck has said he was working with initial “Ryan” actor Baldwin on “Pearl Harbor” (2001) on the day he got the offer, and both Baldwin and Ford gave him their blessing on succeeding them.

The outcome was quite satisfactory, with “The Sum of All Fears” (which is now something of a staple on cable networks) topping $190 million in international profits. Though that would be Affleck’s one turn as Ryan, at least up to now, that casting can be seen as helping to make it plausible for Chris Pine (“Star Trek,” 2009) to take up the part in 2014’s “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” (which finally brought Costner into the franchise as a co-star) … and then for Krasinski to inherit the role in the Prime Video series when it began in 2018.

That service clearly was happy with what it was getting early on, since “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” was renewed for a second season several months before the first one premiered. Now, the show begins its victory lap, but Ryan’s history with filmmakers (and the ongoing popularity of the Clancy books) might suggest that he isn’t done with his screen adventures for good.

Only a few names resonate with consistency and grit, but at the age of 35, Paul Goldschmidt has some doubters questioning whether his best days are behind him. Currently, the St. Louis Cardinals hold a 25-35 won-lost record with a 14-18 record on the road. Despite the less-than-ideal start to the season, the Cardinals are third in total home runs with 80 on the year — 10 of those coming from Goldschmidt. Goldschmidt was traded to the Cardinals back in 2019 after a successful stint with the Arizona Diamondbacks, helping kickstart his career. Since his arrival in St. Louis, he’s been a vital part of the team by adding more all-star and Silver Slugger awards to his resume. At this point in his career, Goldschmidt is well known for his power at the plate and defensive awareness, establishing himself as one of the most consistent offensive and defensive threats in Major League Baseball.

While the team struggles to establish a winning record, it doesn’t seem to have bothered the first baseman. Goldschmidt currently ranks 18th in batting average. His onbase percentage ranks ninth and he’s 19th in the league in slugging (.615 in his last 10 games).

Putting the team on his back for much of the year, Goldschmidt has single-handedly made strong plays throughout the season, scoring in 28 games this year (48.3%), including multiple runs in nine games. Goldschmidt has had at least one RBI in 27.6% of his games this season (16 of 58), and accounts for three or more of his team’s runs in one game. Currently sitting at the bottom of the NL Central (fifth), Goldschmidt and the Cardinals will look to get back to their winning ways as they take on the Chicago Cubs. Q: Why was “Big Sky” canceled?

— Don Carr, Bridgeport, Conn.

A: We’d suspect that the ultimate determining factor for ABC was the fact that the ratings for the third (and, in the end, final) season didn’t improve much, despite the show having a major cast addition for it in Reba McEntire. Hiring her had to have cost a pretty penny, at a time when series expenses were and are being scrutinized more closely than ever. Had “Big Sky” gone to a fourth year, the network probably would have wanted or needed a “name” of the same caliber (McEntire wasn’t expected to return) and whether the cost would be worth the return would have to have been part of that conversation. It likely was an easier decision to cancel the series rather than continue it when its ratings potential apparently had reached a plateau.

Q: I’ve noticed that the James Bond movie “Tomorrow Never Dies” has been on cable a lot lately. Is that because co-star Michelle Yeoh recently won an Oscar?

— Phil Strand, Attleboro, Mass.

A: That probably doesn’t hurt, but the HBO channels already had made a deal to run that and several other Bond adventures for a good chunk of this year before Yeoh won her Academy Award for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Given the level of fame and professional acknowledgement she now has, it’s fun to see her at that earlier stage, though being in a Bond movie raised her international profile considerably when that picture was released in 1997. In retrospect, Pierce Brosnan has a pretty good track record for having worked with best-actress Oscar winners during his four-film tenure as Agent 007. Halle Berry also won her award for “Monster’s Ball” while she was filming “Die Another Day” with Brosnan in 2002.

Roger Moore knew how to ‘Live’ as James Bond

Sean Connery’s first successor as James Bond was one-time “Agent 007” George Lazenby, but the first replacement to stick was the ever-charismatic Roger Moore … who started his run as the secret agent in “Live and Let Die,” which MGM+ shows Sunday, June 25. The 1973 adventure directed by Bond veteran Guy Hamilton (“Goldfinger”) typically takes the Ian Fleming-created hero on a globe-hopping mission, but he spends quite a bit of time in America, notably in New York – where his main lead on the deaths of several other agents is a United Nations diplomat (Yaphet Kotto).

The latter relies on a medium named Solitaire for guidance, and that role marked a major career move for Jane Seymour, quite convincing as a romantic interest for Moore despite the considerable age difference between them. Also notable in the cast is David Hedison as Bond’s CIA pal Felix Leiter (he would reprise the part later opposite Timothy Dalton’s Bond in “Licence to Kill”). The title tune is by Paul McCartney and Wings.

Hats off: chefs face a labyrinth of challenges in new Hulu show

The out-of-the-box, out-of-the-ordinary cooking competition, “Secret Chef,” pits chef against chef in a blind taste-test-off when it premieres Thursday, June 29, on Hulu.

From executive producer David Chang (“Ugly Delicious”) — himself a renowned chef and restauranteur, having founded the Momofoku restaurant chain — this new, “sly” twist on the cooking competition genre asks 10 chefs, ranging in skill and specialty from professionals to home cooks and social media influencers, to perform in a range of cooking challenges, all performed from the depths of a kitchen unlike any other.

The show, as complex as it is straightforward, isolates its competitors in a secret labyrinth of secluded, underground kitchens, connected only by an ongoing conveyor belt. Each chef gets a kitchen of their own, not knowing who inhabits the other nine. With no guidance from any hosts, mentors or fellow chefs, each contender has only one source for instructions: a mischievous, animated chef’s hat, which appears on screen to task the chefs with increasingly complex cooking challenges. They must rely solely on themselves as they chop, blend and sauté

towards the finish line, when their dishes disappear, whisked away on a conveyor belt. But it doesn’t stop there. In another subversion of traditional cooking competitions, this show features no judges – at least, not exactly. At the end of the competition, the chefs will partake in a series of blind taste tests, experiencing each other’s creations firsthand as the conveyor belt moves along –all without knowing the competitor behind the dish. They must rate the presented plates based on food alone, with no knowledge of whether it was prepared by an all-star chef or a hobbyist cook. Only once a winner has been chosen will identities be revealed and the labyrinth unlocked.

Produced by Dave O’Connor (“Abstract: The Art of Design”), food writer Chris Ying and Christopher C. Chen (“Ugly Delicious”) of Majordomo Media, along with Vox Media Studios and Wheelhouse’s Spoke Studios, and helmed by showrunner Patrick J. Doody (“Nailed It!”), this unique new cooking competition show puts food and flavor above all else, upending expectations of chefs and viewers alike when it premieres Thursday, June 29, on Hulu.

“The Bad and the Beautiful” (1952): Hardly a glossy picture of the entertainment world, this drama casts Douglas as a producer with – appropriately in his case – a lot of enemies. Turner Classic Movies presents the film Tuesday, June 27, during the last night of its “Hollywoodland” salute to showbiz stories.
