Duty calls: NBC showcases real exploits of ‘LA Fire & Rescue’

While “Chicago Fire” may be taking its traditional summer break, that doesn’t mean viewers won’t still be able to find fresh firefighting drama Wednesdays on NBC.

And from the same executive producer: Dick Wolf, whose company also is behind “LA Fire & Rescue,” an unscripted series premiering Wednesday, June 21 (and also streaming on Peacock, starting the day after the NBC airings). The show follows several teams and regions within the Los Angeles County Fire Department through a number of situations, some involving medical skills while others rely largely on blaze-battling techniques, with the personal lives of many of the personnel also considered.

One such individual is Captain Stan Maloof, whose fellow captain, twin brother Steve, and their father (also named Steve) have shared the same firefighting career. He left a job in the world of finance, and though he was stationed in Palmdale when “LA Fire & Rescue” was made, Maloof is now a member of the company in La Mirada. He says he’s proud to have so many colleagues ? also including those in Watts, Compton and West Hollywood, among other Southern California locales showcased in the program.

“It’s a heck of a thing to be able to share these unique experiences with people at home who truly understand it,” Maloof reflects of his family ties. “One of the biggest challenges in our profession is going home and trying to relate what we go through, and when you have someone in your family who’s done the same thing, it’s comforting.”

So was the production team’s approach, Maloof maintains, in capturing footage for “LA Fire & Rescue.” He allows, “One of my concerns, when we were approached about this, was their integration into our daily lives. We live at the fire station, and we go on emergency calls and bounce in and out all day long, and it’s not an easy thing for anybody to just jump in and blend with. The production crew did very well with that. After a while, we didn’t even realize they were there.”

Maloof adds that the show’s makers stayed sensitive to the firefighters’ thoughts: “They were very good about checking with us before they recorded something. If they caught something they weren’t sure they wanted, they would ask us whether they should keep it or get rid of it.”

In turn, Maloof and his colleagues made sure the television staff was protected while out in the field with them. “Safety is always a concern,” he stresses, “and as a fire captain, the safety of myself and my crew is paramount. It was interesting to add in the other aspect of having a film crew running with us as we were trying to put out a fire, and that added another level of complexity to it.

“With grass fires, most of them are relatively small and we’re able to contain them pretty quickly ? but there are so many variables that are outside our control, like the wind and the topography that drives the fires. We can’t predict exactly what’s going to happen, so we have to be on our game 100% all the time to make sure that everybody is safe and paying attention to those outside factors.”

Having transferred firehouses since “LA Fire & Rescue” was filmed, Maloof expects the show to double as something of a video scrapbook for him, both now and as time goes along. “It’s going to bring up a lot of good memories,” he forecasts. “Over the course of a career, we work at a lot of different fire stations and with a lot of different crews, and the crew in Palmdale was one of the best and most fun crews I’ve ever worked with. I’m looking forward to seeing that time [captured in the series].”

Maloof feels firefighting-themed movies such as “Ladder 49” also help to support “what the job is. They reinforce the danger and the excitement, and some of them also do a great job in showing the other side of the career we’ve chosen, which maybe the general public isn’t aware of. Maybe 80 to 85% of the emergency responses we go on are medical- or traffic-related. That’s the biggest part of how we help people every day.”

Though he admits he isn’t a steady “Chicago Fire” viewer, Maloof says he has watched and enjoyed that show. “It’s very well done,” he believes. “It does a very good job of depicting life in a firehouse.”

Maloof hopes “LA Fire & Rescue” viewers will see him and his peers as “just regular people who are asked at times to perform extraordinary tasks. We’re a bunch of men and women who are knuckleheads like everybody else and like to have fun with each other, but we know when to take things seriously. We’re just trying to do a good thing.”

Stroll looks to eradicate ‘pay driver’ status at Canadian Grand Prix

There’s no denying it: Lance Stroll is a rising talent on the track.

Born in Montreal, Stroll currently holds the record as the second-youngest driver to ever start a Formula One Grand Prix. He is the first Canadian F1 driver since Jacques Villeneuve in 1997.

As the son of billionaire businessman Lawrence Stroll, who is part owner of Aston Martin, Stroll has battled the label “Pay Driver” for much of his career while steered by his relentless thirst for speed.

Making his professional debut in 2017, Stroll joined Williams Grand Prix Engineering but trouble ensued after his debut season. The Williams FW41 was the slowest on the field that season, with the team finishing last in the Constructors Standings. His string of bad luck continued with a horrendous crash involving Brendan Hartley in the final lap of the Canadian Grand Prix; an early retirement due to a tire puncture at the French Grand Prix; and a brake failure at the German Grand Prix.

Stroll’s career has taken an upward trajectory since joining his father’s Aston Martin team in 2019. The Canadian is slowly evolving into a tour de force, earning his first pole position at the 2020 Turkish Grand Prix, as well as podium finishes in Monza and Sakhir.

Having proven himself over the past five seasons, Stroll currently sits in eighth place, 117 points behind Max Verstappen for the No. 1 spot in the Driver Standings. Despite a sub-par performance in Monaco earlier this year, Stroll will surely be looking for a strong performance at the Canadian Grand Prix, where a great performance on home soil could catapult his career higher than ever, and potentially silence some critics along the way.

Q: Will “Law & Order: Organized Crime” be back for another season?

A: It will, but not until later. NBC is holding it back for mid-season, though the parent “Law & Order” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” will start the next season on Thursdays as usual (with the exact timing of that dependent on the effects of the writers’ strike). With that schedule for those two shows, and the fairly frequently crossovers among the series in the franchise, it’s entirely possible that Christopher Meloni will turn up in his Elliot Stabler role on one or both of those programs — especially given the character’s renewed ties to Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson — before “Organized Crime” makes its official return. The new drama “Found” will have that last hour of NBC’s Thursday schedule when the new season begins.

Intense drama still reigns

Still recognized as a towering achievement in film drama almost 70 years later, “On the Waterfront” is packed with award-caliber performances. Turner Classic Movies shows the 1954 picture Saturday, June 24, with Marlon Brando sparking the emotional and sometimes physical action as a boxer turned dock worker who takes a dangerous stand against his brutal boss (Lee J. Cobb).

Directed by Elia Kazan from Budd Schulberg’s script (with a music score by Leonard Bernstein), the saga marked the film debut of Eva Marie Saint, who won an Oscar here — as did Brando. Overall, the movie earned eight Academy Awards including best picture. Rod Steiger, Karl Malden and such then-uncredited talents as Fred Gwynne, Martin Balsam and Pat Hingle also appear.

‘Food Truck Race’ starts historic season of competition

After 15 seasons, “The Great Food Truck Race” is ready for a shakeup. With eight new episodes and higher-than-ever stakes, this special edition series will — for the first time — pit returning champions and industry professionals against some very talented upand-coming rookies from across the country — all food truck novices. Their toughest challenge yet, “The Great Food Truck Race: David vs. Goliath,” premieres Sunday, June 18, on Food Network.

Representing cuisines from all over the world — from Jamaican tacos and Pakistani street foods to elevated vegan dishes — this season’s chefs hail from pop-ups, specialty spots and traditional restaurant kitchens alike, each prepared to face some of “TGFTR’s” toughest food-truckers yet.

“Tyler welcomes the nine teams to Los Angeles, where the food truck business is booming and cutthroat,” shared Food Network in a sneak peek of the season’s first episode. “With five talented rookie teams who have never owned or operated a food truck and four teams of seasoned pros, this ‘David vs. Goliath’ battle gives each business the once-ina-lifetime opportunity to establish themselves in the country’s food truck capital.”

They go on to explain that: “For the first challenge, the teams must make a jaw-drop-

ping dish that not only defines them as a business – but also demonstrates they are ready to compete at a high culinary level.” From there, the teams “hit the baseball field to serve Little League players and their families,” joined by Mookie Betts of the L.A. Dodgers.

As the season continues, the teams will be asked to make dishes inspired by the menus at chef Antonia Lofaso’s well-known L.A.-based restaurants (Black Market Liquor Bar, DAMA and Scopa Italian Roots) and create masterpieces delicious enough to satisfy guest judges, chefs Jet Tila and Joe Sasto, along with last season’s winner, Señoreata’s Evanice Holz. Outside of the kitchen, the chefs must put their business savvy to the test, drawing crowds through social media and exercising their best and most effective selling techniques.

Parked in the city’s business epicenter, these truck-runners are not only fighting against each other but also against a hectic flow of hungry people passing by, looking for a delicious meal on the quick. Fast-paced as ever, one team will be eliminated each episode, leaving only two to go head-to-head in a battle for the winning title and a $50,000 grand prize. Only the strongest will survive Season 16 of “The Great Food Truck Race: David vs. Goliath,” premiering Sunday, June 18, on Food Network.
