Boldly going: ‘Star Trek’ prequel explores ‘Strange New Worlds’ again

A prequel series in one of sci-fi’s most iconic franchises is ready to go, boldly, back to the roots of the saga.

“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” begins its 10-episode second season Thursday, June 15, on Paramount+, as it continues the exploits of the starship Enterprise when it was under the command of Capt. Christopher Pike (Anson Mount, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” 2022), the predecessor of the vessel’s legendary later skipper, James T. Kirk (played by “The Vampire Diaries’” Paul Wesley, who reprises the recurring role in Season 2). Spun off from another prequel show, “Star Trek: Discovery,” “Strange New Worlds” has even more in store for fans: A third season already has been ordered, ahead of the premiere of Season 2.

“We have tried to harken back to some of the values and styles of the original series that got those of us who are a little older ignited on our ‘Star Trek’ journeys,” explains executive producer Akiva Goldsman. “In doing so, we’ve tried to look back and interpolate some parts of the original series that might not have made it to the screen, some things that might have happened just before Jim Kirk took over the Enterprise. And, as such, some familiar faces are finding new life.”

Mount brought his Pike portrayal over from “Star Trek: Discovery,” which also featured Ethan Peck (“In Time,” 2011) as Spock and Rebecca Romijn (“X-Men,” 2000) as Number One before they made the journey to “Strange New Worlds.” Nurse Chapel (played by Jess Bush, “Playing For Keeps”) and Ensign Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding, “Broadway Whodunit: Escape From Camp Eerie,” 2020) are among other long-familiar characters who make their “Strange New Worlds” presence known. The second season of “Strange New Worlds” also includes Carol Kane (“Hunters”) in a recurring role.

“There was something about ‘Star Trek’ that was so far off the radar for me,” reflects Mount, who also is the character Black Bolt in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “It wasn’t even on my bucket list. I just never thought I would end up captaining the Enterprise. It’s insane when you think about it. And every single day I’m on the set — I’m not exaggerating — is both disbelief and a feeling of tremendous gratitude.”

A particularly intriguing crossover story is part of Season 2 of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” which will merge temporarily with “Star Trek: Lower Decks” ... an animated

show. Franchise veteran Jonathan Frakes (“Star Trek: The Next Generation”) directed that story, which features the voices of Tawny Newsome (“Space Force”) and Jack Quaid (“The Boys”) in their “Lower Decks” parts — and challenges traditional “Star Trek” boundaries by combining live action and animation.

Still, Goldsman maintains that he and his staff “are, by nature, people who like coloring books, and we sort of like staying within the lines as much as we can. We’re ‘Star Trek’ fans, so (adhering to established) canon is almost always delightfully challenging, except when it’s really a pain in the a—. But within reason, we still try to skew as closely to it as possible.”

“I think anyone who has ever traveled in the world of ‘Star Trek’ knows they’re inheriting canon,” adds Goldsman, who also has helped oversee “Discovery” and “Picard” among other “Trek” shows. “We have writers on all the staffs that keep track of it. We have a frequent meeting where the showrunners of all the shows get together in advance of the scripts they’re about to write as they’re starting to break seasons. And they all share ideas and information about what they’re doing so that we can stay ahead of any problems that may come up, so we’re not stepping on each other’s toes.”

For Romijn, “Star Trek” has become a family affair, since husband Jerry O’Connell (“Stand By Me,” 1986) voices one of the main characters on “Lower Decks.” She appreciates what “Strange New Worlds” enables her to represent, reasoning that “there is a little bit of being a mom, especially of daughters, that plays in. A lot of it, I don’t have control over, obviously. I really consider my daughters a lot of the time, because the female characters in this genre are fantastic and strong and they appeal to my daughters. And if I’m going to be spending time away from them, I want them to be able to see what I’m doing and appreciate it. And they do.”

Peck similarly likes interpreting Spock in his own way, and enjoys “the kind of infinite possibilities of him and his life. It’s a really delicate dance that we’re attempting, and I think a lot of it is done in the writing. I show up to work and I get a new script, and suddenly I’m faced with something that’s totally unfamiliar to me in my work as Spock. So, the sky is kind of the limit, in my opinion … but there definitely are rules.”

The adventure continues when Season 2 of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” premieres on Paramount+ Thursday, June 15.

Matt Fitzpatrick looking for another major victory

With the highly anticipated U.S. Open Golf Championship just around the corner, there’s certainly one name that stands out among the talented field of competitors — Matt Fitzpatrick.

Born in Sheffield, England, the 28-year-old has quickly made a significant impact in the world of golf, having already accumulated numerous accolades and displaying a maturity level beyond his years. After winning the Silver Medal as the leading amateur at the 2013 Open Championship, his career trajectory has skyrocketed, climbing up the world rankings at a remarkable pace after making an official move to professional golf in 2014.

Putting his talent on full display, the Englishman won his first professional tournament at the 2015 British Masters, cracking the top-100 ranking, at No. 59, for the first time in his career. Continuing his elite level of play, his performance at the British Masters earned him a spot on the 2016 European Ryder Cup team. He concluded his triumphant rookie season with one tour win and an impressive nine Top 10 finishes.

Having now been propelled to prominence and beginning to pave a path for himself, he went on and put together a string of dominant performances, showcasing his ability to play under pressure, like winning the 2016 DP World Tour Championship over Tyrrell Hayton by one shot.

Leading up to the U.S. Open Championship this year, Fitzpatrick’s statistics can do all the talking — he’s currently ranked No. 7 worldwide. His driving accuracy, putting average and greens in regulation percentages consistently rank among the top on the PGA Tour. His patented short game is sure to play a big role as well. He’s now racked up eight European Tour wins, One Asian Tour win and two PGA Tour wins, including winning his first major championship last year when he finished at sixunder-par, one stroke ahead of Scottie Scheffler and Will Zalatoris, at the U.S. Open.

Coming off his recent victory at The RBC Heritage tournament, Fitzpatrick will be looking to continue his strong play and add some more hardware to his trophy cabinet.

Q: Has “ S.W..A.T.” been canceled? – Al Lerner, via e-mail

A: CBS canceled the police-drama reboot, but then “uncanceled” it after

a few days. That owes largely to a big outcry from the show’s fans, which was fortified by a statement from star and executive producer Shemar Moore, who expressed (with abundant frankness) his disappointment with the network’s first decision about the show for the 2023-24 lineup.

That came down to a matter of money, since CBS wanted to pay the same licensing fee fior a seventh season, when costs would go up for such expenses as the salaries of regular cast members. In the end, CBS reversed itself and ordered a series-concluding Season 7 that will consist of 13 episodes rather than the more typical 22, saving some of the cost that way.

Q: When “Will Trent” resumes next season, will it pick up with the stories it left off with? –Greg Shaw, Mobile, Ala.

A: You can pretty much bank on that. As with the Karin Slaughter novels that the ABC show is based on, the characters’ past experiences form a big part of who they are, so the revelations that played out in the first-season finale — particularly for police detectives Will (played by Ramon Rodriguez) and Angie (Erika Chiristensen)— are virtually certain to keep playing out into Season 2.

Seeing ‘Friends’ from the start

“Friends” remains such a part of regular viewing for so many fans, almost 20 years after it ended, it’s always worth a mention whenever the sitcom’s pilot episode comes around again. TBS shows it Monday, June 12 ... and while it’s surely an entertaining half-hour, it’s interesting to gauge whether it really indicated a show that would become one of the most enormous hits in television history. After all, all of the cast members had done previous series turns that didn’t last very long. However, by the time they were finished being there for you (so to speak) in the original run of “Friends,” the ensemble cast — Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer — ranked among television’s biggest stars. And to a large degree, they’ve retained that status as they’ve gone on to other projects.

’Ouchef’d’ and outdone: Competition returns to Food Network

The battle between talented home cooks and trained pros is renewed when “Outchef’d” returns for a second season, Thursday, June 15, on Food Network. Episodes will also stream on discovery+.

Hosted by NFL player-turned-chef Eddie Jackson, each episode introduces a confident home cook, who arrives on-set thinking it’s an audition but is suddenly revealed to be a full-on, head-to-head culinary battle against a world-renowned chef. As Food Network describes it, it’s immediately “lights, cameras, action,” as the participant tries to simultaneously process what’s happening and rise to the challenge.

Viewers first got a taste for the competition series when it premiered last September, and it seems to have been a hit with TV audiences and Food Network executives alike.

“Capturing the mind-blowing moment these home cooks find out they are heading straight to set to battle a culinary superstar is such fun – and the action only heightens from there,” Betsy Ayala, head of content for Food at Warner Bros. Discovery, said in a statement. “They have all watched cooking competitions and thought they have what it

takes to win – and in ‘Outchef’d,’ we actually find out if they do!”

If you’re thinking the ambush approach doesn’t sound terribly fair, know that the show does try to level the playing field between pro and amateur(ish) competitors.

There’s an initial ingredient-themed cooking round, but after that, Jackson heads out into the streets to randomly recruit four people to serve on a blind-tasting panel. All it takes is just one vote from these four — rather than the unanimous verdict delivered on similar competitions — for the home chef to win the $5,000 prize.

In Thursday’s premiere, Rocco DiSpirito is the seasoned industry veteran who will face off against Season 2’s first competitor (reportedly, an entrepreneur). Other elite chefs competing this season are: Eric Adjepong, Kelsey Bernard Clark, Tiffani Faison, Darnell Ferguson, Alex Guarnschelli, Robert Irvine and more.

Expect shocked reactions and quick-ontheir-feet thinking from the competitors featured in Season 2 of “Outchef’d,” and don’t think the celebrity chefs will be taking it easy on the challengers, either. The new season premieres Thursday, June 15, on Food Network and discovery+.

“Key Largo” (1948): the only problem that those at a Florida hotel have, thanks to the gangster (Edward G. Robinson) hold ing them prisoner, in another teaming of Bogart and director Huston. A play by Maxwell Anderson is the source here.

“In a Lonely Place” (1950): a great performance as a screenwriter who just might be involved in a murder, to the alarm of his new love (Gloria Grahame). Turner Classic Movies shows the film Tuesday, June 13.
