Women’s health Open enrollment for health care coverage under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) begins in about three weeks. While the ACA provides protections and health care coverage for all Alaskans, Alaskan women particularly benefit from its requirement that insurance plans (finally!) cover the full range of FDA-approved contraception methods and stop insurance discrimination, “gender rating,” against women (www.nwlc.org). These requirements genuinely support improved quality of life for all Alaskan women, but especially Alaska’s abnormally high population of battered women, as the law will effectively increase opportunities for them to achieve independence from abusive partners.

Governor Parnell decided Alaska would be the only state of 50 that would not apply in 2010 for up to $1 million in ACA planning grants (www.cbpp.org). Despite that, the federal government has our back and is seeing to it that we Alaskans get the information we need to meet the law’s requirements in our best interests.

I urge all Alaskans to call 1-800-318-2596 or visit www.healthcare.gov, for information and support regarding participation in the very humane Affordable Care Act program.

Some things aren’t for the ballot box As I watch organized labor representatives gather signatures for the repeal of the oil tax reform, I have to ask myself, “what are they thinking”? Or, at least, what are those who get roped into signing the petitions thinking?

This whole effort to repeal oil tax reform is an abuse of Alaska’s referendum process. A duly elected legislature spent thousands of hours, millions of dollars, and took impressive amounts of public testimony in crafting a sensible reform package in Senate Bill 21. The tax reductions were watered down by compromise. The final package is measured and responsible while still improving Alaska`s competitive standing as an oil producing state.

Complex tax policy should not be made at the ballot box. Elected officials should be chosen at the ballot box to deal with these and other issues. Alaskans should walk past the signature gatherers and, if it comes to it, vote a resounding “no” on this abuse of the referendum process.

Missing Out North I was very disheartened to read that Out North had closed. I went to a writing class there, during Pride Week. I myself am heterosexual, but I’ve always had an affinity for LGBTs. The writing class was only a few hours long, but I learned so much. I have been writing ever since. I would have frequented Out North more often, if I weren’t in school and living in the Valley. It will be such a great loss for the community, to lose such an open-minded center.

Buying local (art) Earlier this year I went to the Solstice Film Showcase at the Bear Tooth, and the whole festival was remarkable for how polished everything was. I love local films, but often when you’re watching a homegrown production there’s at least one thing—fuzzy sound, a particularly awkward actor, long stretches of expository conversation—to remind you that these are amateur films. They’re put together with love and enthusiasm, but not always a lot of expertise.

What this festival showed was that some folks have been making films on their own time (and dime) for a few years now or more, and they are getting better and better at it.

Which was good to see, and got me thinking about local art.

I know a guy who used to do stand up comedy. He lived in a Chicago, a city known for that scene. I spoke with him shortly after his move back to Alaska. As we happen to have a handful of funny guys in town doing stand up, I wondered if he’d want to check it out or participate himself. I don’t remember his exact words, but the general tone of his response was: “In Anchorage? Uh, no thanks.”

I get it—I used to be snobby about that too. Growing up in Anchorage I longed for the shiny lights of a more cultured city. When I was 25, I was broke and living in Vancouver, B.C., a city I love. I thought moving from that glittering metropolis back to Anchorage was like (I remember telling my friends) “getting sucked back into a cultural black hole.”

Sure, there are artists and plays, but small-town stuff, I sniffed. Once I was back I still engaged in the arts, but it was by watching movies online, reading the New York Times, and downloading the same albums as everyone else in the country. I got my cultural fix from everywhere but here.

Eventually, I got over it. I started hanging out with some cool people and developed a professional interest in goings-on around town. Along the way I discovered Anchorage bands, art, dance and theater. Some of these artistic endeavors were well meaning but cringingly unsuccessful, it’s true. But I was astonished by how many people in this town are really, really good—as good as anywhere, and with that twist that makes it our own.

And the more I watched, the more exciting Anchorage became, and my vision of what it means to be a part of this place expanded.

I was thinking about that during the Solstice Film Showcase, while watching a halfhour film called Matt and Maddie, made by Anchorage filmmaker Bryant Mainord. It’s a good, nuanced film about two people in present-day Anchorage that are falling in love. It’s a fine film in general, but what made a big impact on me was seeing that well worn movie trope—boy meets girls, boy loses girl…—in my own city: seeing a couple meet-cute at the Tap Root; skateboard around South Addition; have arguments against the backdrop of neighborhoods I frequent. It was like seeing my life—or something similar to it—projected in the grand scale of cinema, made bigger and somehow more momentous.

We talk about buying local food, or supporting local businesses. I think that we could all stand to buy more local art. A ticket to the Monolith showcase will cost you less than the new Jay Z album. A seat at Cyrano’s won’t run much more than the latest 3D blockbuster at Tikahtnu. And maybe you’ll go and it will suck, but that’s a risk you take any time you consume art. The trick is to keep checking things out. It’s not going to be long before you hit on something worth your time. And along the way, you’ll be supporting the arts, which is nice in a touchy-feely way, but serves another purpose. It helps local art get better—so there can be better bands, and better First Fridays, and better films, and we don’t always have to travel to New York City or Los Angeles in our imaginations to have a good time.

When artists create work, they build our vision of a place, whether it’s Paris or Spenard.

Why not build your vision of our town?

Goodbye to good times A reviewer at the website Yelp wrote that she was told by a cab driver that The Pit Bar, just outside Seward, is “The place where a good night out goes to die.” Which was meant as a compliment. The Pit Bar is located just beyond Seward city limits on the town’s namesake highway, so it can stay open until 5 a.m., when a good night out happens to be dying slowly. Occasionally this backfires, as it did at about 3 a.m. on Friday, August 31, just after one customer was told to leave. The man—a white male about 5’10” tall with a barrel chest, reddishbrown hair and a beard, wearing glasses—allegedly threatened to burn The Pit down. He then started a fire in the dumpster. The bar’s staff put the fire out and called 911. Alaska State Troopers were notified, according to a Seward Police dispatch.

Thursday, August 22—A 22-year-old man from New York was arrested after troopers noticed “an odor of marijuana as he walked by the Healy Trooper Post,” and a trooper stopped the man.

Troopers say the traveler was holding 1.5 ounces of weed and will be charged with fifth degree drug misconduct. That’s one step up from simple possession and time to get a lawyer.

Department store dining Nordstrom Café is a surprisingly pleasant lunch getaway

hen I think of Nordstrom, a few things come to mind: fancy clothes that I don’t buy, the maze of makeup on the bottom floor and easy access to the Apple Store in the 5th Avenue Mall. A few weeks ago, a friend mentioned that she likes lunching at a hidden gourmet café inside the store. I had never even heard of it.

Right around that time, my parents arrived for their annual factfinding mission: to make sure I am eating well, still have friends, and have not given up on marriage and kids.

Mom and Dad live in Los Angeles, a city filled with excellent dining options. And they have now visited me in Anchorage a total of nine times. But when asked why they visit so often, their first response isn’t “because we love seeing our handsome, successful, caring son.” No. Rather, it’s “the food.” Bear Tooth, Middle Way, Sacks, Snow City, Glacier Brewhouse—they have plenty of local favorites. So you can imagine their surprise when I told them about the hot, new-to-me chain restaurant in a department store in the mall. My attempt to convince them that it doesn’t feel like a chain only bolstered their skepticism.

But they loved it.

People come here because the food and service are top-notch.

ur maiden voyage into the ladies’ clothing section of the second floor of Nordstrom revealed the Café, tucked between Hosiery and Petite Focus (a department name which sounds to me like a veiled insult).

When crowded, the space feels a little cramped, like a cafeteria.

But if you show up before the lunch rush hits, the vibe is classier and calmer, like a piano bar that replaced the piano with a contemporary jazz satellite radio station. In fact, my parents loved the ambience—especially the music. As my Dad put it: “they aren’t playing that Gaga music.”

The logistics can be confusing, but not outcome-determinative.

Visitors arrive and join a line, peruse the menu until they order, and pre-pay at the cash register. So far, this is a cafeteria. But then Nordstrom Café guests become restaurant diners who sit down with their receipts and wait for their food to be made fresh and delivered.

Mom, a vegetarian, ordered the Chinese chicken salad ($10.75) without the chicken. Might you just call that a Chinese salad? We didn’t get into the semantics, mostly because Mom’s salad was excellent. Julienned vegetables, crisp wontons, toasted almonds, mandarin oranges, and a spicy ginger sesame dressing kept me and my Dad picking away at Mom’s meal for more bites. (I don’t usually share salads, but she’s my mother, I am allowed to eat her food in public with impunity, those are the rules, thank you.)

Dad, an avid carnivore despite his elevated cholesterol count, chose the Santa Fe chicken sandwich ($10.50), comprised of a pair of sourdough slices neatly stuffed with an almost Cajun blackened chicken, avocado, jack cheese, caramelized onion, and roasted

sweet peppers. A chili pepper aioli completed the flavor.

Dad also ordered the Roma tomato basil soup ($3.75/$4.95).

Fresh, hot and very flavorful, this soup stole the show. We fought over who got to finish the cup.

I ordered the cilantro lime chicken salad ($10.75), consisting of the titled ingredients plus jack cheese, roasted peppers, tomato, corn, and pumpkin seeds. The cilantro lime vinaigrette turns this salad into a tart, almost-ceviche-like treat. If it wasn’t my first visit to the café, I would have licked the bowl clean. But I was feeling shy: Mom: Go head, lick the bowl.

Me: No, Ma. We’re in public.

Mom: That didn’t stop you from eating half my salad.

Dad: She has a point.

Mom: I’m talking to both of you.

We had the good fortune of dining when Jonathan Rohland, the regional manager of Nordstrom Cafés for the Northwest United States, happened to be visiting. Jonathan manages 11 restaurants, from 60-seat Cafés to 220-seat restaurants. I asked why the food was so good in what I would normally classify as a glorified food stand.

“We want to be a destination restaurant. Look around—there aren’t that many shopping bags. We aren’t living off of the Nordstrom Department Store traffic; people come here because the food and service are top-notch. We don’t advertise at all; it’s all value perception. But hopefully some of our guests are shopping on the way out,” Rohland said.

Jonathan pointed me to the back of the menu, on which the Café’s policy of using “local, sustainable, natural and organic foods and environmentally friendly products” is laid out. On paper, it looks like lip service. But Jonathan was persuasive. Though a pas-

sionate manager does not guarantee tasty food and responsible practices, Jonathan’s commitment to his Cafés convinced me to stop thinking of Nordstrom Café as a chain restaurant or a rest area for shoppers, and instead as a self-standing lunch option.

Just as Jonathan hoped, Nordstrom Café in Anchorage has set itself apart as a destination restaurant, particularly as a lunch option for those who work downtown. Though a few items did miss the mark (I returned for three subsequent meals), on balance the Café is providing correct portions of great food at a reasonable price, while using local foods (root vegetables when in season, Alaska-caught salmon and Alaska-made potato chips) in the process. What more can you ask from what could easily be a poorly thought-out department store fast food option?

This might not be your father’s department store chain, but after last week, it is one of my Dad’s favorites.

As weather cools, beer scene heats up Season is starting for specialty beers and festivals showcasing them

S

ummer is quickly going away, but with it goes the bugs, the tourists and the crowds in my favorite watering holes. It gets so bad at the height of tourist season that I pretty much avoid the downtown corridor because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s near impossible to get around when the streets are choked with gawkers. Parkingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a real challenge and finding a seat at places like Humpyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s or Glacier Brewhouse can be rough in the early evenings, which is when I like to patronize these establishments.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s another ripple effect and, for a beer lover, changing seasons can actually mean the blossoming of excellent new local beers.

When the crowds depart, things slow down for our craft brewers because theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not chained to the brewkettle, trying to keep their cooperage full of the mainstream stuff that gets slurped up with seemingly uncaring abandon by tourists. When this is all over with, brewers go back to taking their time and freeing up fermentation space for seasonal specialty beers and one-off treats.

Another sure sign of a more leisurely beer pace is the appearance of beer festivals around the state. Sure, there are a few here and there throughout the summer, like the Augtoberfest in Healy at 49th State Brewing Company, the Kenai Peninsula Beer Festival (also in August), and the Golden Days Beer Festival in July in Fairbanks, but the beer scene in Alaska really heats up in the fall.

his Saturday, Sept. 14, join your beer-loving friends at the Third Annual BodegaFest between 2-8 p.m. at Anchorageâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cuddy Park behind the Loussac Library in midtown.

This event sells out every year and features your favorite suds, mead and cider from Alaska breweries, along with upscale selections from national and international breweries.

There will also be live music and food from local vendors. La Bodega Liquor Store owner Pamela Hatzis, the event organizer, describes this festival as â&#x20AC;&#x153;a classy hybrid of the famous Great Alaska Beer and Barley Wine Festival and the Girdwood Forest Fair.â&#x20AC;?

Tickets are $25 in advance at either the La Bodega store in Midtown or online at bodegafest.com. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re a last minute kind of party-goer, expect to pay $30 at the door to get in. Admission includes a commemorative tasting glass and 15 beer tickets, with more available for purchase. All proceeds from alcohol sales will benefit Alaska Public Media.

glorious fall colors, so why not plan on heading north to attend the Talkeetna Beer Festival, a benefit event for the Northern Susitna Institute? The gig is set for Sept. 28 this year, between 2-6 p.m., and takes place at the Talkeetna Sheldon Community Arts Hangar in downtown Talkeetna. Tickets are $40 per person. With admission youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll get a tasting glass and 15 sampling tickets that will fetch you beer from over a dozen local Alaska craft breweries. Since proceeds benefit the Northern Susitna Institute, a multi-faceted, collaborative, non-profit educational organization, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be enjoying local beer for a good cause.

One of my favorite things to do is head up early on the day of the fest, check in to a rental cabin within walking distance of downtown and spend the early part of the day checking out my favorite Talkeetna haunts, including the Denali Brewing Company, Twister Creek Restaurant, the West Rib Pub (where Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be hoping to see Talkeetnaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s famous mayor, Stubbs the Cat, whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recuperating from a recent dog attack), Mountain High Pizza Pie, the historic Talkeetna Roadhouse and Fairview Inn. It may not be wise, but I always find myself preloading for the beer festival, enjoying a beer at each of these locations.

The annual Eagle River Brewfest kicks off on Oct. 11 this year at the Eagle River Lionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Club between 6:30 and 9:30 p.m. The cost of this beer bash benefit for the Eagle River Boys and Girls Club is $50 and will not only fetch you the obligatory sampling glass and sampling tickets for all-Alaska craft beer and mead, but access to a beautiful buffet style meal that typical features locally prepared stuff like prime rib, halibut, salmon and all the fixings.

I enjoy this event, despite it being jam packed every year. The mood seems a bit rowdier and more party-like than many of the others. Integral to the event are the live and silent auctions of local goods and services, which directly benefit the Boys and Girlâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Club. This one sells out in a hurry every year. The 2013 Mighty Matanuska Brewfest is a two-day event at the

Raven Hall on the Alaska State Fairgrounds in Palmer, Oct. 18-19.

The gig runs between 6-10 p.m. both nights and last year featured 74 different beers, live music and food for purchase. The cost is $30 per person for each night and will get you a commemorative glass and tickets for 20 three-ounce samples of beer.

Obviously, this one takes a little planning and a designated driver for sure. Designated drivers get in for $10, and they receive a complimentary non-alcoholic beverage. If you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t scrounge up a designated driver, get to Chilkoot Charlieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and get signed up (in advance) for a $29 round trip ride on the Magic Bus (two of them will be in service) which depart Kootâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s at both 5-5:30 p.m. and return at about 11 p.m. after the fest. Note that the $29 does not include the cost of admission to the fest, but youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll avoid both the drive and the parking hassle at the Fairgrounds.

For some Alaskans, a wetsuit just gets in the way when swimming outdoors

he July heat wave may seem like a distant memory, but officially we still have a full week left of summer. That means it’s not too late for a swim in Cook Inlet if you have some experience as an Alaskan ocean swimmer, and you’re just a little bit crazy.

For some Alaskan open-ocean swimmers, coastal waters are still comfortable enough to swim “naked,” the term used by the United States Masters Swimming organization for cold-water ocean swimming without the insulation of a wetsuit. Indeed, data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shows that Cook Inlet’s current late-afternoon surface temperatures are in the low- to mid-50s, about the same as those offshore from Seattle and a bit warmer than those in the lessprotected waters off Port Townsend, Washington.

Long-time open-water swimmer Bob Kaufman of Anchorage said his threshold for swimming without a wetsuit is about 55 degrees, which means it’s probably a week too late for him to feel comfortable swimming “naked” in Turnagain Arm. In past years, Kaufman has acclimated himself to go for long swims without a wetsuit in water temperatures as low as 50 degrees, while some open-water swimmers, like Willie Schulz of Ketchikan, have an even lower threshold.

swim in the Inside Passage near Ketchikan, said he has done Alaska ocean swims in all seasons of the year and never worn a wetsuit.

“You get used to the water temperature the more you swim in the ocean,” Schulz said.

In general, the ocean water temperatures in Ketchikan are a couple of degrees warmer than in Anchorage at any time of the year, but neither community is known as a destination for beachgoers or swimmers.

Even at the peak of the summer, extended exposure to ocean waters in Alaska will cause hypothermia and possibly death, but thanks to long summer days and ocean currents that move warm waters in from the south, the Gulf of Alaska heats up to a point late each summer where its temperatures rival those off the coast of Northern California. This means Alaska’s ocean waters get warm enough for an extended swim without a wetsuit for at least a couple months each summer.

But why bother swimming in Alaska’s chilly ocean waters?

“Out in the ocean, there is so much more to see and experience,” Grant Turner, who writes the soggyramblings.com blog on Alaska ocean swimming, said in a recent interview.

“In the shallows, you get a great view of the ocean floor, which is usually covered in a wide variety of sea life, and as you get into the deeper water, you come across bigger critters like seals and sea lions,” Turner said. “Add the change in weather, tides, boat wakes and everything else, and the whole experience is exciting.”

And why not wear a wetsuit, which will not only keep your teeth from chattering those first few frozen minutes but add buoyancy and help you swim faster? “Wetsuits take a few minutes to put on, they can chafe your underarm and neck, and they isolate you a bit from the water. I frankly think they’re a pain and prefer not to use them if I can bear the water temperature,” Kaufman said.

Kaufman began open-water swimming when he was living in the San Francisco area, and he doesn’t remember the ocean there ever getting too warm in the summer. Perhaps that made the transition to swimming in Alaska easy. A few years ago Kaufman swam across Turnagain Arm, but he doesn’t make a regular habit of doing Alaskan ocean swims. Instead, Kaufman does most of his summer swimming in Little Campbell Lake, which can see temperatures in the high 60s in July and August, far above Kaufman’s wetsuit threshold.

The waters in Anchorage-area lakes get warm enough for even a casual swimmer to enjoy a dip during a summer warm-spell, but they also are subject to quick and dramatic changes in temperature from week to week. Outdoor swimmer Robbie Herrick of Fairbanks said the rule of thumb for an average (non-glacial fed) Alaska lake is that its water temperature will be about equal to the average air temperature of the previous week. By comparison, NOAA data shows the temperature of Cook Inlet changes gradually, typically peaking in the high 50s in early August, (cont. on page 11)

Naked, continued slowing falling by a degree or two each week through October and November, and hovering in the low 30s through most of the winter.

Because of the gradual warming and cooling of the ocean, Cook Inlet is usually still warm enough for hearty ocean swimmers to go “naked” into mid-September. It may not happen often, but it is even possible that for a narrow window some autumns a swimmer might be more comfortable swimming without a wetsuit in Cook Inlet than in Little Campbell Lake. The perfect scenario for this is when a week or two of unseasonably cold temperatures follows a hot summer like this year’s.

This summer had a late start, making for below-average ocean water temperatures in June, before a record-breaking stretch of warm days in July pushed water temperatures to a couple of degrees above average by the start of August. The ocean has cooled about seven degrees from its summer peak, but, should we be treated to a mid-September warm spell, you shouldn’t rule out an ocean swim, as long as you’re aware of tides, currents, and other dangers.

“Don’t let the air temperature’s drop scare you from swimming,” said ocean swimmer Liz Villarreal of Homer. “Our warm summer heated the waters well, and it’s taking a bit of time to change those back.”

Villarreal joined Claudia Rose on a four-mile swim across Kachemak Bay in mid-August. Rose, who is from San Diego, has come to Alaska for ocean swims most summers since 2007 and said conditions this year were about the best she’s experienced. As evidence, she noted that this was the first summer in recent years that no one withdrew from the Pennock Island Challenge in Ketchikan because of hypothermia symptoms.

Grant Turner measured the water temperature in Sitka at 47 degrees when he did his first ocean swim of the year in early June. By mid-August he described the water as “balmy” at 60 degrees.

In the past, Turner always wore a wetsuit for longer ocean swims, but this summer he went “naked” a lot more often. He said the change wasn’t so much because of water temperatures but for the sake of experimentation. Turner isn’t putting his wetsuit away forever, but he expects to try going without it on a regular basis next summer too.

“It’s usually only cold getting in and for the first couple of minutes of the swim,” he said. “After that, your body gets used to the temperature and you generate enough heat from the exercise that you don’t really feel cold at all.”

Rose wore just a swimming suit to cross Kachemak Bay and believes she is the first person to have ever completed the swim without a wetsuit. Villarreal, who wore a wetsuit, explained that she considers a lot of factors beyond temperature when deciding what to wear in the water, including jelly fish stings and the possibility of encountering a school of slimy pink salmon.

Other hazards Rose listed for ocean swimmers in Alaska include tidal currents, sea lions, fishing boats, glacier runoff, and even bears, which are known to steal salmon from set-nets far from shore.

Of course, Rose said, some of these hazards are what attract swimmers to the ocean, and they can be planned for and safely dealt with. Rose said the immediate Anchorage area has the unique hazards of silt and extreme tidal currents, so it really should be avoided for ocean swimming, but there are decent places for a salt-water swim within a short drive of the city.

Rose spent the spring training in cold water to come to Alaska this summer for a swim across the Bering Strait, but she encountered troubles getting the Russian authorities to grant her permission to spend a few days crossing Russian waters. Having acclimated herself to the cold, she decided she would come to Alaska for a few weeks anyway and do ocean swims in Ketchikan and Homer.

Next summer Rose plans to forget about the Russians and just deal with the Coast Guard. Her goal is to swim across Cook Inlet, which will require Coast Guard permitting since it will be a slow crossing of active shipping lanes. Rose wants to depart from near Nikiski, where the waters are fairly clear, there are fewer tidal dangers, and she shouldn’t encounter freezing glacial run-off, as she did in Kachemak Bay. Even from there, Rose said, the side current is going to be abnormally strong and will add significantly to the challenge.

Rose hasn’t set a definite date for her Cook Inlet swim. She wants to leave some flexibility to increase the chances for calm winds. Aside from creating waves, that wind speed does more to make a swimmer feel cold than the air temperature on a given day, she said. The same is true for factors like whether the tide is coming in or out and whether it’s been raining. Rain can help keep a swimmer warm by cutting down on evaporative heat loss, so the wet weather we’ve seen lately is no excuse for not swimming.

Rose is looking at late July or early August for her swim next year. The waters are usually warmest then. Should next year provide a balance to this summer with unseasonably cold temperatures, Rose can always consider the option of wearing a wet suit and staying a little warmer.

September 15, 1858: First transcontinental mail service to san Francisco begins On this day in 1858 the new Overland Mail Company sent out its first two stages, one heading east, the other west, inaugurating government mail service between the eastern and western regions of the nation.

California’s Gold Rush of 1849 caused a massive movement of population towards the West Coast, and Americans on both coasts had been clamoring for faster and surer transcontinental mail service. In March 1857, Congress passed an act authorizing an overland mail delivery service and offering a $600,000 subsidy to whatever company could succeed in reliably transporting the mail twice a week from St. Louis to San Francisco is less than 25 days.

The postmaster general awarded the first government and subsidy to the Overland Mail Company, whose board of directors included John Butterfield and William Fargo.

The Overland Mail Company spent $1 million improving its winding 2800-mile route and building way stations at 10- to 15-mile intervals.

Teams of horses soon raced across the wide open spaces of the West, pulling custombuilt Concord coaches with seats for nine passengers and a rear boot for the mail.

For passengers, the trip was hazardous and uncomfortable. Packed into the narrow confines, they had little protection from the elements, and dust was omnipresent. The “home stations” along the route varied from simple to miserable, the food generally poor, and the stage drivers often surly. Robberies and Indian attacks were a genuine threat, although the company posted guards or hired “shotgun” riders through known problem areas.

The Pony Express was only one of the competitors for overland mail services, but the Overland Mail Company continued to operate as part of the larger Wells, Fargo and Company, until May 10, 1869, the day the first transcontinental railroad was completed.

September 16, 1893: Largest land rush in history: 100,000 claim Oklahoma land The largest land rush in history began on this day in 1893, when more than 100,000 people poured into Oklahoma’s Cherokee Strip to claim valuable land. The mad dash began with a single cannon shot, and land-hungry pioneers raced forward to claim homesteads.

Early explorers of Oklahoma believed that the territory was too arid and treeless for settlement, but that it would be an ideal location to resettle Indians. The US government began removing eastern Indian tribes to Oklahoma in 1817, and in 1828 it was designated Indian Territory, with existing settlers forced out. The “Five Civilized Tribes”, Cherokee, Choctaw, Chikasaw, Creek and Seminole, had allied with the South in the Civil War. The federal government looked upon them as defeated enemies, and forced them to relocate to the Territory. By 1885 numerous Native American tribes had been pushed or forced onto reservations in eastern Oklahoma, promised that the land would be theirs “as long as the grass grows and the water runs”.

The tribes often prospered. The Cherokee nation had leased their lands to members of the Cherokee Strip Live Stock Association, which created an income for the tribe.

These leases prohibited erecting structures, ensuring that the land would be maintained for grazing.

But by the late nineteenth century, farmers had developed new methods that made the Plains valuable to settlement. Pressure steadily increased for the government to open these Indian lands. The federal government under President Benjamin Harrison privatized two million acres known as the “Cherokee Strip” to settlement.

At the time, America was in the midst of the worst economic depression it had ever experienced. This helped create the situation of thousands of immigrants fighting over 42,000 parcels of land. Towns like Norman and Oklahoma City sprang up almost overnight.

This land rush created two new words in the American lexicon: “boomers” and “sooners”. Boomers were those that waited for the cannon’s boom to rush forward to claim their parcel. Sooners were those who had snuck past sentries and staked out claims before the race had begun.

nchorageâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s polka community is thriving. Yes, polka. It is not some old-fashioned, dying breed of music. It is alive and well.

Polka may seem like an outdated, boring ideaâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;a bunch of old farts wearing lederhosen, jumping around as they sloppily play accordions. But polka and the instruments behind it deserve some attention.

Polka is â&#x20AC;&#x153;the happiest music in the world,â&#x20AC;? says retired priest Father A.J. Fisher, an 85-year-old Anchorage music icon, who has taught polka dancing throughout the city. Father Fisherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s exuberance about polka is contagious, especially when you get him talking about local dances, music festivals, accordion-led bands, polka masses, and culturally-based party nights.

His poem, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Polka Partyâ&#x20AC;? reads in part: Soon the body is in polka fever I had not exerted so hard all week Problems of the week I cannot remember For I am enjoying heaven on earth Legs are limber Heart beat fast It is a time of happiness Let my aching body answer tomorrow Cobwebs have left the mind Aches gone from the bones Real people are enjoying The simple things of life Father Fisher got me wonderingâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;who listens, plays or dances to polka music? Gearing up New site GearSpoke offers equipment rentals for the adventure hungry

A

nchorage garages are often full of skis, snowboards, fishing poles, hockey skates, XtraTufs and sleds. We seem to find purpose for tarps and Duct Tape on a weekly basis and utilize truck beds to their full ability. When you happen to live in the biggest and baddest state in the country—with all its epic mountains, flowing rivers, fluffy snow and long summer nights— you are bound to have a few pieces of gear around.

But then there are those weekends when a friend says, “Let’s go snowshoeing! You have snowshoes, right?” And you don’t.

Or when friends and family come into town wanting to borrow bikes or snowboards, and the only loaners available are a kid’s Huffy with a flat tire and a 15-year-old snowboard with men’s size 12 boots.

If one new company has its way, these conundrums will be a thing of the past. GearSpoke.com is a site for Anchorage residents to rent out their rarely used gear, equipment and tools to adventure-hungry neighbors. The process is simple: users can search for gear, schedule a rental date, pick it up, and bring it back. If you have a couple snowboards, bikes or a chainsaw you want to make some extra money off, you’ll create a profile, verify that you have the same address as your credit card, link a bank account and then rent away. Responsibility is on the owner of the gear to make the transaction successful: they must take the picture, competitively price their equipment, be available to meet up with renters and, in GearSpoke’s case, leave a personal reference after every rental.

“GearSpoke endeavors to get everyone to go outside and experience the great outdoors in every way possible through enabling trustworthy and safe rental transactions,” CEO Paul Davidson

says.

Davidson says he’s always had an entrepreneurial heart, and knew he wanted to own a business from an early age. Though he was working on a business degree at UAA, he was never quite sure what type of project he wanted to launch. Inspiration was seeded one day when he was helping a friend rent his truck to the construction company Davidson worked for.

“I realized then that this type of peer-to-peer renting could be done with anything if there was a system to facilitate it,” Davidson says.

The motivation for GearSpoke wasn’t based on just one experience.

“Paul is always on the search for new outdoor adventures,” says Dillon Vought, lead promoter for GearSpoke. One weekend Davidson created “The AlaskaMan,” a 140.6 mile triathlon (for himself), in which he swam 2.4 miles in Little Campbell Lake, biked 112 miles from Anchorage to the Hope turnpike and back to Girdwood, ran Crow Pass trail and finished in Eagle River.

Though Davidson is ambitious with his outings, he says he doesn’t always have the equipment needed for his explorations, not that he let that stop him. He once constructed pack-rafts in his living room out of inflatable pool toys and Gorilla tape to raft down Portage River.

“Paul decided it was time to bridge the gap between those who want to go on all sorts of outdoor adventures and those who have the expensive gear sitting unused,” Vought says.

E

arly in 2011, Davidson attended Startup Alaska at UAA, a business incubator that gives young entrepreneurs access to three days of workshops, mentorship, and networking. Davidson found 12 people to start the project and eventually established a long-term team of seven members, including Linda Janes, the chief operating officer. Vought says they all juggle working full-time jobs and other commitments with pitching in on GearSpoke.

“Being a start-up business means our roles often overlap and we all end up doing things you wouldn’t expect from our titles,” Vought says.

The GearSpoke team is based in Anchorage, though a few of them remotely.

While the business has a focus on the Anchorage market, Vought says, “before we even finished building the site we had someone from Norway ask if we were going to be there soon. As an online marketplace, GearSpoke can be used anywhere.”

After getting word out in Anchorage, they hope to reach out to Portland, New York, Seattle, Denver and Hawaii in the next year or two. “World domination will follow shortly after,” Vought says.

The website finally launched in October 2012 after 14 months of volunteered time, and now the project is gaining momentum.

GearSpoke had banners at the Color Run and an information booth at Salmon Stock, and Vought says that they’ve had about 50 rentals so far and are growing everyday.

A couple times a week they use Facebook to promote a new item of interest. “It’s tricky to get owners and renters to join and use the site quickly and simultaneously. In order for the site to be more convenient, more equipment owners and equipment renters will need to join,” he said.

Isn’t this just a glorified offshoot of Craigslist? “No,” Davidson said, “but we get that comparison all the time.”

Davidson says he has tried many times to rent gear off Craigslist, but the deals always fell through because people are trying to sell, not rent. GearSpoke is a rental site—nothing is being sold, bought or bid on. GearSpoke takes a 10 percent transaction fee of each rented item and uses a secure depositing system called Balanced Payments.

Another way GearSpoke is different from Craigslist is its emphasis on personal reviews and profiles.

“The number one goal of all of us at GearSpoke is to help build and support the outdoor community. We will eventually become profitable with enough users and transactions, but right now we are able to maintain very low costs as the team works for free with the common goal of building this peer-to-peer outdoor community,” Vought says.

Ford, like many polka band musicians, understands that to keep things fresh, their polka repertoire needs to be augmented with other genres, like Latin, swing, ballroom, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;40s, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;50s, and early country music. Some Alaska polka bands have added midi and drum patches to enhance their sound and play to a more diverse audience. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You have to mix it up and be versatile,â&#x20AC;? she said.

On the Anchorage polka music circuit is Alaska Blaskapelle, a 12 piece brass and accordion band (can you say â&#x20AC;&#x153;oompahâ&#x20AC;??) that plays for the annual Nordic Ski Train, now in its 42nd year. As Neal Haglund, one of the band leaders, noted in a recent video on Indie Alaska and reiterated to me during an interview, â&#x20AC;&#x153;This band would have fun in a closet. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s happy music that is contagious, once you get into it, you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stop your foot from tapping.â&#x20AC;?

The Polka Buzz is a four-piece band whose membersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; ages range from 16 to 73. The band mixes polka music with rock tunes from the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;70s and includes an electronic buttonbox accordion/vocals (Roger Weinfurter), button box accordion/vocals (Bob â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ziggyâ&#x20AC;? Szewc), saxophone/clarinet/vocals (John Weinfurter), piano/vocal/ukulele (Grace Weinfurter), and midi sounds.

Other polka and accordion based groups are The Main Squeeze and the Alaska Button Box Gang, with the Gang competing in national competitions, and both groups playing at the State Fair, Downtown Market, and private parties.

Sanctuary in Denali Despite logistical irritations, Park provides classic packraft trip for fall

S

anctuary River is a classic packraft trip with outstanding scenery in Denali National Park. With relatively easy backcountry navigation and no significant rapids, it is a good introduction to overnight pack raf ting.

Late summer or early fall is a good time to go, when the mosquitos are gone and the tundra colors are turning.

Considering it has six million acres, it can be challenging to find manageable weekend bac kcou nt r y trips in Denali National Park. There are very few trails, and the inconvenient bus schedule makes it difficult to get out into the backcountry efficiently. Fortunately, packrafting Sanctuary is a good choice.

After getting off the park bus at Sable Pass, packrafters can take an easy walk down to the Teklanika River. The first part of the hike follows an informal or game trail, which dissipates south of Cathedral Mountain. Walking out of Sable Pass provides great views of Cathedralâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dry spires to the north and the small glaciers in Teklanikaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s headwaters to the south. Teklanika is a wide, braided river above its confluence with Calico Creek, and is easy to ford at normal summertime water levels. After fording the Teklanika, a patchwork of game trails leads across a series of meadows interspersed with spruce trees toward Calico Creek. The longest part of the walk is ascending Calico Creek, first on the gravel riverbed and later on low tundra above the creek.

Scenery in Calico Creek is outstanding. Great spires rise above the creek on either side. Rock slides between pinnacles look like divine paint spilled down the mountainside. Such dry, ascetic peaks are not what most visitors anticipate when they come to Denali, but these scenic peaks stretch for miles, forming the foothills of the Alaska Range. Not that they seem like foothills: Remnant headwall glaciers cling to the sheer faces, and great piles of moraine appear to cover

Toward the pass, the scenery becomes more austere. Grey canyons and bare rock walls reach to the horizon. Looking upstream, the hiker sees only loose moraine and steep headwalls. Recently, a glacier lived here near the pass to Sanctuary River, but now it has left a vacant valley. From a distance, the approach to the pass seems impossibly steep, but the final pitch isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t difficult. From the saddle in the ridge, you can see Sanctuary River to the east and a long Calico Creek descending to Teklanika River to the west. It is a great sight for those who have been walking uphill for hours.

From the pass toward Sanctuary, there is a nice campsite about a third of the way down, before the creek drops into a gorge, and plenty more camping down by Sanctuary River. Descending, be sure to cross the creek at some point and follow the grassy bench down on the south side of the creek. Though it is possible to walk right down the creek for a while, eventually it enters a steep canyon that would be impassable without rappelling.

After arriving at Sanctuary River, it is an easy three- to four-hour paddle down to the park road.

Though the river may be shallow and braided at first, it becomes more easily navigable through the descent. None of the rapids are more difficult than Class I riffles and boulder gardens, provided one takes out at the park road.

After walking up Calico Creek, the float out on Sanctuary is pure pleasure. The low mountains in front are scenic. Make sure to turn around and check out the glaciated peaks up behind Refuge Valley. The Sanctuary is easy enough that a dry suit isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really necessary, though it is nice if oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s packraft is leaky or it is raining. I paddled an old, leaky packraft without a drysuit and sat in a glacial bathtub for three or so hours out to a park road, a great way to get ready to winter.

Getting there It is a complete pain to backcountry camp in Denali, since the camper buses only leave at 7 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m., and 4 p.m. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a couple hours from the start of the bus trip to Sable Pass. The park office isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t open until 9 a.m. Saturday, so weekenders canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get the permits and make the 7 a.m. camper bus, which is a failure of Park Service management. And the camper buses are outrageously expensive, but campers can take comfort knowing their dollars will be well spent by Aramark Corporation, which is based in Philadelphia.

Other than these logistical frustrations, Sanctuary is a great trip. One also can avoid the bus hassle and hitchhike in on a private vehicle during the early September season that private vehicles can enter in the lottery. Hitchhiking is illegal, but works better and is cheaper than taking the bus.

Terraform, on taking shape Anchorage metal band Terraform talks transition, transformation and alienation

here are few things more offensive to the music mainstreamer than the metal genre. Even music aficionados struggle with the aggressive riffs and heavy repetition that define it. But, like other musical styles, metal requires intense dedication, attention and, on occasion, physical and emotional strength. An enormous amount of energy goes into the creation of what many write-off as intolerable noise, or so say the four musicians that make up local thrash metal band Terraform. “(Metal) has a lot of meaning,” frontman Murat Demir said, “It’s a type of music you have to pay attention to, like classical or jazz. Actually, it’s really comparable to jazz, because only jazz players really understand jazz.

Same goes with metal.”

Demir, 21, and his band mates Cody James, 19, Zach Potterf, 18, and Zack Cross, 19, all agree that their musical effort, and what it yields, is a genuine form of creative expression, but admit that it’s not for everyone.

ity experience for the artists. “It’s definitely a project of passion,” says Phillips. “I’ve come at it from more of an artist’s perspective.

In that way, it’s very successful… we work really hard for the band, and I think that’s why we have a good reputation.”

Bare, in fact, first heard of Monolith through his band’s bassist, who played an Alaskan tour with the band Quiet Life. “[Quiet Life] did that last year, and thought it was the greatest thing, and had a blast,” says Bare. Eventually, after trading emails with Phillips, the scheduling panned out and Bare was able to make it up north— “finally,” he adds.

Bare’s brand of eccentric rock will be a great fit for many Alaskan audiences, including those who haven’t necessarily ventured into his catalogue. Bare was raised around music for his entire life, and always thought his dad was incredibly lucky with his life’s work. “I mean, my dad just had a really, really cool job,” says Bare. “There are a lot of kids who want to be like their dad—mine just happened to have an extremely cool job.”

Bare Jr., however, didn’t venture into playing guitar and composing until after college. “I didn’t even write songs and play them out until later in life,” Bare says, estimating he really got into the trade when he was about 30. Bare met with success relatively fast, thanks to the very successful single “You Blew Me Off,” and the aid of some college friends who worked in the trade and helped him navigate the murky waters of the music industry.

Perhaps it was this later entry into music that helps make Bare’s songwriting so unabashedly original. His lyrics range from the quirky to macabre, while his melodies blend rock, country, and roots music into one bizarrely appealing package. Bare says he approaches songwriting as a way to draw out the underlying “essence” from the mundane. “Shel Silverstein used to do caricature drawings for Playboy magazine. Before he did that for Stars and Stripes,” says Bare. “So he’d have to look at someone getting on the bus, and he’d have to figure out what’s really honestly happening there and what’s interesting… it’s the same [for songwriting]- just something will jump out at you.”

obby Bare Jr. is startlingly down to earth for being the child of one of country music’s biggest legends. The son of C&W superstar Bobby Bare, Bare Junior has a languid cadence in conversation, a chilled out vibe that’s practically tangible through the phone. He mentions it’s a good thing I got in touch with him early in the week—he’d be leaving soon for a show in Spain, sharing a bill with the imposing combination of Dinosaur Jr. and Built to Spill. “We’re playing on top of a mountain looking over San Sebastian on one side, the ocean on the other side,” says Bare—clearly excited but still as laid-back as ever.

Soon, Bare will also be sharing a bill with familiar names like Emma Hill and Historian as part of the Monolith Agency’s third annual showcase. Booking a national name like Bare is concrete testimony to Monolith’s increasingly positive reputation and widening influence. The small agency, helmed by local music superheroes Marc Bourdon, Evan Phillips, and Martin Severin, has quietly aided the Anchorage music scene in its evolution and expansion. In the late 1960s, she began her exploration of the connection between advertising and several public health issues, including violence against women, eating disorders and addiction –launching a movement to promote media literacy as a way to prevent these problems.

Much like Bare, Monolith’s approaching New Year also promises to be full.

Phillips says the agency is already preparing to bring up northwest darlings like the Terrible Buttons, the Ezza Rose Band, and Alameda for subsequent tours. The agency is also actively building new partnerships with national acts and has some exciting long-term projects in the works. “In the future we’re going to be focusing more and more on cultivating the grid between Portland and Anchorage, specifically, and in general—building a bridge between Alaska and the rest of the country,” says Phillips. An article that appeared in NPR this summer helped to bolster awareness of Monolith’s work—a valuable boon to an agency that has otherwise relied on word-of-mouth. Alaska is becoming more and more of a viable arts marketplace, and Monolith plans on continuing to play a large role in that development. “I’ve felt that really more and more—what we’re doing up here is very important,” says Phillips. “And it’s special—and these bands want to be a part of it.”

Vin-dication ‘Riddick’ goes back to its monster movie roots

in Diesel returns, growling more than ever, as Riddick, the character that made him a star, in a film creatively titled Riddick. The third movie in the shiny-eyed franchise is a decent enough return to form for the series, and much better than those vroom-vroom movies Diesel has been hanging in around lately.

Director David Twohy gave us the original, above-average Pitch Black, back in 2000. Diesel’s performance in that film remains perhaps his best ever, although that’s not saying much.

His growl hadn’t yet become somewhat of a joke, as it has in the Fast and Furious movies.

Then came The Chronicles of Riddick, an awful, bombastic PG13 spectacle that felt especially silly after the barebones R-rated horror of Pitch Black. Those of us who enjoyed the original were not counting on a big-budget blockbuster with the gritty Riddick doing the hang with Judi Dench.

Legions of fans were severely pissed off about the costume pageantry of the second film, so Twohy and Diesel have taken the character back to his monster movie, bloody roots.

The movie has a brief, costume pageant prologue where Karl Urban makes a brief appearance. Then, in a blink of an eye, Riddick is stranded on yet another alien-infested planet.

The monsters are scorpion-like nasty buggers that will eat their own guts if given the chance. And they love the rain.

A good chunk of the film is Riddick in lonely survival mode.

In a rather sweet touch, he rescues a doglike creature and they become friends. Realizing he won’t be able to fend off the scorpion things forever, Riddick sets off a rescue beacon alerting bounty hunters to his presence on the planet. Two groups show up, and the movie becomes a bunch of macho guys (and Battlestar Galactica’s Katee Sackhoff) growling at each other.

So, Riddick is two movies in one, with both of those movies being riddled with monsters. One is basically Riddick in a varia-

The other is your typical ragtag group of meatheads posturing with each other, trying to determine who’s in charge of the whole “catch Riddick” thing.

I preferred the movie in the early goings, with Diesel and his dog. It’s cute, and it has the occasional monster attack. As for the bounty hunters, this feels like stuff we’ve seen before in Pitch Black. It even repeats that moment with Riddick in chains, rhythmically thumping his arms and getting off on the mayhem that is about to ensue.

Of the bounty hunters, the one I like the least would be Santana (Jordi Molla), who looks like Andy Garcia after a blue meth bender. He’s one of those characters you wish would just shut up and stand in the background. Nope… he’s a major character and he gets plenty of annoying screen time. Another character, played by Matt Nable, has an interesting connection to a character in Pitch Black.

Thankfully, Twohy overcomes the flaws for the most part, delivering good monster action on a relatively meager budget. Riddick’s dog is a reasonably well done CGI creation, as are the scorpionlike creatures out to kill everybody. While I did prefer the quieter moments with the dog, the best overall scene in the film is the initial monster attack on the bounty hunter station. Many

characters meet their demise in decent slasher-film style.

Internet scuttlebutt says this movie happened because Diesel really wanted it to happen. The film was a result of Diesel returning to the Fast and Furious movies. I reckon those films will never stop, so as long as Diesel shows up to mumble some lines whilst driving really fast. So it stands to reason that the Riddick movies might continue as well.

HOMEVIEWING Sharknado (Blu-ray) The Asylum Movie: BSpecial Features: B-

I missed this during its initial cable run. I found that a lot of people loved that it existed, but didn’t necessarily sit down to watch the thing.

Not only did I sit down to watch this… I paid for it! Am I glad I did it? Sure I am.

Let me make something perfectly clear: There isn’t a lot of actual sharknado action—that would be action consisting of tornadoes full of sharks—in the movie. The movie is more about standard shark attacks on the beach, shark attacks in your backyard, and shark attacks in the living room. You know, everyday shark attack sort of stuff.

It isn’t until near the finale that you get full-on sharknado action, with big twisters full of hammerheads and great whites that eat

people as soon as they hit the ground. Whoever made this movie should’ve thrown a lot more money at it because tornadoes full of sharks is an awesome idea. I wish that most of the movie was dedicated to this meteorological event.

Tara Reid, a long way from her days in Coen brothers movies, appears alongside the guy whose name you don’t know from Beverly Hills 90210, and they are awful. Trust me, you won’t care that they are awful, for this is a movie with tornadoes full of sharks, and even though sharknados only take up a few minutes of the film…IT’S TORNADOES FULL OF SHARKS! The sequel is already in production. Disney spent something like $200 million on The Lone Ranger. If Disney were wise, they would buy this property, throw about $50 million at it, and watch the money come rolling in.

Special features: A making-of short, a commentary and a gag reel. The gag reel is weird because the entire movie is basically a gag reel.

From director Anne Fontaine (Coco Before Chanel) comes this beautifully shot tale of two female friends (Naomi Watts and Robin Wright) who watch each other’s sons (Xavier Samuel and James Frecheville) grow up to be rather strapping lads. So it only stands to reason that the women start sleeping with each other’s sons, and that causes all kinds of troubles and mixed feelings.

Yes, it’s basically the “Motherlover” video Justin Timberlake did for Saturday Night Live done all dramatic and deep.

That’s about it for plotting; the film will not blow you away on a story level. However, it is well acted, with Watts and Wright especially good as loyal friends who can’t help themselves.

Fontaine knows how to make a good-looking movie, and there are many shots of awesome looking people in swimwear. The great Ben Mendelsohn is on hand as Wright’s husband, who gets himself a big surprise when he returns from an extended trip.

This is Wright’s best role in quite some time, and Watts basically just needs to show up on a movie set to make things interesting.

So, yes, I mildly enjoyed watching Princess Buttercup and King Kong’s girlfriend doing inappropriate things with each other’s beefcake surfer dude sons. I know I make it sound terrible, and it is terrible in some ways. But you are in the company of fine actresses filmed lushly, and not every film is shooting for an Oscar.

Loco Parentis: First-time mother Amy Webb proudly notates dozens of data points about her child each day and obsessively tracks their detailed progression by computer on spreadsheets, according to the provocative first-person account she wrote for Slate.com in July. In categories ranging from ordinary vital signs, to the kid’s progress in making sounds, to dietary reactions, to quantity and quality of each poop, stats are kept 24/7 (even with a bedside laptop to facilitate nighttime entries). She began tracking her own health during pregnancy, but then decided, “Why stop now?” when her daughter was born. Webb’s pediatrician rated the kid’s health as “A-minus,” but the parents’ as “C,” adding: “You guys need to relax. Leave the spreadsheets (out).” Webb and her husband remain confident that their extreme tracking optimizes their chances of raising a healthy daughter.

Although “both rich and poor Americans are walking waste dumps,” wrote the website Quartz, reporting the conclusions, poorer people’s typical food leaves lead, cadmium and the banned bisphenol-A, whereas richer people more likely accumulate heavy metals (mercury, arsenic, thallium) from aquatic lean protein (and acquire oxybenzone from the active ingredient in sunscreens).
