Susan would pick up a tattoo in the way that many will get a souvenir snow globe or postcards while traveling. “I have some health issues, and I have so much ugly stuff going on in my insides, that I wanted to decorate the outside,� she explained of the butterflies on her back. After procuring several tattoos as mementos of her travels, she and her husband gained more insight into body art. Jimm proclaimed her initial tattoos to be “flash,� which is a term referring to images in a book in the tattoo shop that one flips though and chooses from. As Seinfeld says, “Not that there’s anything wrong with that,� but body art was evolving by this time and being elevated into a reputable art form. Clients were now making more personalized and artistic requests, and respected, sought after tattoo artists were also emerging as societal acceptance shifted. With their increasing interest in body art the couple began attending the Hell City Tattoo Festival in Phoenix, which is one of the premier such events in the country. Attendees can have work done

It’s good to recognize how happy we can be even with our goal far off in the distance. We would have no doctors or lawyers if they weren’t able to keep the endgame in mind through the many years of education and training they endure. Identification with the result makes the discomfort manageable, and at times downright pleasant, whether it’s a garden, a baby or a diploma. So the question is, what do you want to grow with this life? Are you planting the seeds and patiently tending to them? The real happiness comes
at the festival, and many do, owing to the vast collection of renowned artists on hand. Several of Krausman’s latest additions have been done at the festival, which is held late in August every year. She confesses to Susan Krausman displays her not being as particular about favorite piece of body art. the artist as other tattoo enthusiasts tend to be. “The ones on my back are for showing off. I wear my nice clothes for others to see them. The ones on my legs are for me, I see them. They remind me of my family and Jimm,� she explained of the butterflies and stylized hearts, all clearly bringing her joy. For Krausman, each addition to her tattoo collection is steeped in meaning, and in many ways tells the story of her life. Since retiring in 2012, her collection is growing with her new found freedom from workaday concerns about appearance. “I’m not done,� she says with a smile. from knowing that if we plant a particular type of seed, like eggplant, and then tend to it, meaning creating all the causes and conditions needed, it is definite that an eggplant will grow. Likewise, if we create the causes to improve our self, and therefore our world, we can be happier and more relaxed now with the knowledge that it truly is just a matter of time before we see results. There are many methods to accomplish self-improvement, but we do need to choose and stick with it. If we merely poke at the soil a bit and throw down some seeds without conviction, the outcome is uncertain, as is would be the case with our happiness. The astonishingly optimistic Anne Frank said, “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world. Let’s get planting!

Saskatchewan; a hard night for Mom and Aunt, they spent hours taking turns going out into the maelstrom to prop up the collapsing corner. At dawn we gave in, packed (wetly) up, and sat in the car for a while, eating donuts and drinking milk. When I hear the word “peaceful,â€? that’s the moment I think of. The next night we stayed in a motel and they let us pitch the tent in the backyard to dry out. My brother slept on the floor that night, because camping had “toughened him upâ€? and he didn’t want to lose his edge‌ I admired him, but did not copy him. Wet and filthy, we were forced to hit the Laundromat. We now learned that there’s dirt, and then there’s campground dirt. If a soap company really wanted to make a bundle selling detergent, they’d do well to film a commercial involving a camping family — with before, during, and after footage. I also believe there’s a market out there for olive drab/brown clothing, towels, tents, chairs, and anything else that involves fabric that goes camping. There’s a reason the armies don’t wear white — it’s hard to bivouac and stay clean. I trace my lackadaisical approach to laundry from this time: “I don’t care what it looks like; it’s been washed and dried and it’s clean.â€? I encourage campers to follow this path. Also, take along someone proven to be a mosquito magnet — someone the critters enjoy biting more than you. If you can get your hands on one (like my sister)
it’s quite a bonus. We told her the mosquitoes preferred her because she was “extra sweet.� What? Was that wrong of us? Entertainment included singing in the car, boisterous board games at night (we were scolded by a ranger for “noise�), and reading the Rand McNally Camping Atlas aloud. This is a lot like listening to lottery numbers being announced. With each listed amenity, “tent sites, fire rings, pets okay, locked food storage,� our excitement built, sometimes finishing in a flourish with “showers, swimming in season.� Jackpot! Each spot provided its own allure; all we had to do was weigh our options and pick. One place I remember listed itself as a working ranch. This meant “we let the horses run around loose after chow.� Kind of startling for suburbia folk to go into the bathroom (tile floors, electricity!) at dusk, and emerge into darkness with interesting animals sounds all around. Snorting, stamping, you name it. Fortunately nobody panicked. Most important of all — with camping you can get in touch with yourself, with your family, and reacquainted with nature. Some of it is work, but it’s all rewarding. The last time I camped out it was effortless, and I felt kind of guilty. Our dome tent was so easy to put up I did it by myself — no staking required. Two trips to unload the sleeping bags, cooler, and battery operated lantern; we had yogurt and macadamia nuts for dinner. A reminder: nothing is ever perfect (except sunrises or sunsets) but this is awfully close.
