ABORIGINAL CULTURE FESTIVAL June 16 - 18 This year’s Aboriginal Cultural Festival will see more than 25 performers grace the main stage, celebrating the diverse traditional and modern cultures of Nations from across British Columbia. Returning to headline the festival performances will be three-time world champion hoop dancer Alex Wells who hails from the Lil’wat Nation and is welcomed as a guest of the Songhees Nation and Esquimalt Nation.

The sound of Jazz The world comes to Victoria when JazzFest hosts 10 hot days of cool jazz, June 23 to July 2. Festival headliners include singer-songwriter Ziggy Marley and Mavis Staple. Ghostly tales! As British Columbia’s most haunted place, Victoria boasts more than a few supernatural stories. The city celebrates its spooky side in late October, but John Adams, host of the city’s popular Ghostly Walks, offers ideas for those wanting to explore year-round. Several shops in Old Town along Government Street are good places to start, including Rogers Chocolates and Old Morris. Hatley Castle, part of Royal Roads University, is haunted by ghosts of the Dunsmuir family who once owned it. Featured in the Creepy Canada TV series, the formal gardens and museum are open daily. The Victoria Golf Course on scenic Beach Drive beside the ocean in Oak Bay is haunted by Doris Gravlin who was strangled there by her husband in 1936. Many believe she is the most frequently seen ghost in town. Chinatown has many stories of ghosts and the supernatural. Museum honouring legacy April 12 to October 1st For 143 days and 5,373 kilometres stretching from St. John’s, Newfoundland, to Thunder Bay, Ontario, Terry Fox and his Marathon Of Hope captured the hearts of Canadians in 1980. In celebration of Canada 150 celebrations, the Royal BC Museum will showcase a collection dedicated to Fox. Explore the story of a young man who inspired a nation and established himself as a hero through his courage, hope and determination. At the age of 18 Terry Fox lost part of his right leg to bone cancer. The loss didn’t diminish his drive or courage; in fact, it inspired greatness. Once he recovered, this young man from Port Coquitlam, B.C. set out to run across Canada in what he called a “Marathon of Hope” to raise money for cancer research. In the summer of 1980 Terry began his 143-day, 5,300 kilometre journey, starting in St. John’s, Newfoundland. His plan had been to run across the country. Sadly Terry’s cancer returned and he was forced to finish his run in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Salute to the Bard! The Greater Victoria Shakespeare Festival announced its upcoming summer season and they are set to kick off July 7, with Macbeth, directed by Kate Rubin & Karen Lee Pickett, and Love’s Labour’s Lost, directed by Janet Munsil. The plays will be performed in repertory July 7 through July 30 on the Festival’s Camas Stage outdoors at Camosun College’s Lansdowne Campus, with special Bard Across the Bridge additional performances of Macbeth August 3 to 5 at Saxe Point in Esquimalt in partnership with the Township Community Arts Council. The Festival schedule will continue to include a matinee, presented at 1:30 p.m. on Saturdays. “This opens up our work to an audience who perhaps doesn’t feel comfortable coming to an outdoor

Call of the wild For adventure-lovers, the West Coast is the place to be Docks lined with whale watching operators waiting to take nature enthusiasts on a tour to show the West Coast’s most beloved treasures is a staple of the Inner Harbour. While the West Coast shorelines are teaming with fascinating creatures, the true stars are the whales. Several resident pods of orcas make their home in Victoria-area waters, not to mention numerous minke and humpback whales. Those embarking on this ultimate West Coast experience may also get to share in the excitement of seeing several calves recently born to residents pods. In addition to snapping photos the majestic creatures, there’s lots to learn from the on-board naturalists working with Victoria’s top whale watching companies. Learning about the habits and characteristics of these majestic creatures to the latest 18

conservation efforts is all part of the experience. Naturalists also share a wealth of knowledge about many other species often spotted on a given trip. While the whales are of course the star, don’t forget to look out for many other local species occupying our waters. The Inner Harbour is also ideal for a paddle, or venture to the Upper Harbour and the parklined Gorge Waterway. Other popular paddling locations include the inlets and bays of Oak Bay and Saanich. Don’t forget to explore Tod Inlet, a picturesque stretch of water between the Peninsula and the Malahat. Not far from the downtown core are fresh-water paddle areas including Elk and Beaver Lakes in Saanich and in the West Shore community of View Royal, Thetis Lake. Both are about 15 minutes from Victoria.

urban core to the south Island’s pastoral countryside and wild West Coast, 85 kilometres of accessible, picturesque trail along a former railway line – ideal for a scenic tour or a family excursion. The Galloping Goose, a 55k trail from Victoria to Sooke, is the first section of the Trans-Canada Trail. The Goose intersects with the Lochside Trail in Saanich, which ventures out through the rolling farmlands of the Saanich Peninsula. Cyclists wanting to stick to the city can follow the Scenic Marine Drive, which starts downtown and winds along the picturesque waterfront of Fairfield, Oak Bay and Saanich.
Head back to town, or connect with the Lochside Trail to continue out the Saanich Peninsula. If trails are more your speed, mountain bike enthusiasts will find a variety of opportunities in the region, including trails and a jump park at Bear Mountain Resort, and Hartland, on the Saanich Peninsula. Other options for the adventure enthusiast? Take to the trees with AdrenaLine Zipline Adventures in Sooke, or checkout WildPlay, in the West Shore, about 20 minutes from downtown, where the Monkido Aerial Adventure has options for all ages. The Saanich Peninsula is also home to Victoria Butterfly World, whose lush, tropical gardens provide the ideal backdrop for thousands of free-flying butterflies, plus a wide variety of tropical animals, many rescued or donated, including ducks, flamingos, rare tropical birds, poison dart frogs, tortoises, turtles and giant koi.

Nearby, in Saanich, the Gardens at the HCP offers more than five acres of gardens on a 103 acre site. These gardens are set in a conservation park with nature trails, wetlands and bird watching sites. From the whimsical Children’s Garden to the summer Cutting Garden to the restful Takata Japanese Garden, this is a must-see for gardeners. Just minutes from downtown Victoria, Abkhazi Garden is “the garden that love built.” The 1946 creation of Prince and Princess Abkhazi is very discreet from the street, with only hints of what exists beyond the hornbeam hedge. What the visitor does find is a garden that embraces a natural landscape that is unique to Victoria. The garden is blessed with dramatic glaciated rocky slopes, magnificent native Garry Oaks and gorgeous vistas. The garden is designed to make the most of these remarkable features and it is the Abkhazis’ response to their landscape that qualifies it as a stunning example of West Coast design. of eclectic spaces open yearround, including two rose gardens, English country garden, herb garden, rock and alpine garden and more. While touring the gardens, stop by Cary Castle Mews, open Tuesdays to Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., May 23 to September 1. The cluster of 19th century wooden service buildings, including a stable, carriage house, gaol, root cellar, wash house and poultry house, have supported Government House since the 1870s. Hatley Park is another National Historic Site, home both to Hatley Castle and Royal Roads University. sample the ever-changing flavours of the season. Najarro has a tender spot for the farm’s signature pork. He says the meat offers endless versatility for diners, be it in the form of chops, pulled pork, pancetta, prosciutto or bacon. Emily Carr’s output reveals an artist whose style and content continually evolved. Philosophically, however, at the root of her entire oeuvre, is an unwavering love of nature and the landscapes that surrounded her. Over the years, the AGGV’ s collection of Carr’s work has formed the foundation of several exhibitions, each examining the artist’s career from a different viewpoint. Picturing
the Giants uses the lens of her increasing interest in environmental issues. In journal entries, Carr expresses the contradiction she sees between the spiritual and utilitarian value of trees; she also describes a belief that cutting and regrowth could be well-managed. Picturing the Giants will also consider the question “What would Carr think of today’s treatment of our forests?”

ESSENTIALS NEIGHBOURHOODS INNER HARBOUR / DOWNTOWN The Inner Harbour is the most often photographed and most easily recognized place in Victoria, and home to several renowned landmarks, including the Legislative Buildings and The Fairmont Empress Hotel. Nearby, Bastion Square is the site of the original Fort Victoria and currently home to shops, restaurants and services. Other downtown attractions include the Royal BC Museum, the National Geographic IMAX Theatre, The Bateman Centre and the Victoria Bug Zoo. Shoppers will love Government Street, LoJo (lower Johnson Street), Fort Street and the Bay Centre. Take in views of the Inner Harbour with a stroll along the pedestrian walkway beginning near Belleville and Menzies streets and following the waterfront over the blue Johnson Street Bridge into neighbouring Vic West and Esquimalt. NEIGHBOURHOODS NEAR DOWNTOWN Several picturesque, historic neighbourhoods surround downtown and are within easy walking distance.
