Picnic-perfect destinations Wondering where to enjoy the treats picked up at the neighbourhood farmers’ market, deli or restaurant? The City of Gardens offers numerous possibilities – including gardens, but also the beaches and parks around virtually every corner. Here are some of our favourites. 1. Near downtown, Fisherman’s Wharf offers a selection of eateries with outdoor seating, or stroll the docks and take in the colourful float homes and fishing boats. There’s also a large grassy park with a play area for the kids. 2. In Saanich, Mt. Douglas offers a commanding view of region. The road to the summit is closed to vehicle traffic until noon to allow pedestrians to enjoy the climb. The park also offers a variety of trails and a beach. 3. In Oak Bay, Willows Beach offers an expansive grassy park, one of the region’s most popular beaches and a playground for the kids. Forgot the picnic fixings? Entertaining ideas PEERING INTO THE PAST: CELEBRATING CANADA’S OLDEST CHINATOWN The Royal BC Museum pop-up exhibit in Chinatown’s Fan Tan Alley recognizes the importance of the Chinese Canadian community in Greater Victoria. Established in partnership with the Royal BC Museum, Victoria Chinatown Museum Society and the Salient Group, Peering into the Past: Celebrating Canada’s Oldest Chinatown, provides a sneak peek of a future regional hub of the recently announced Chinese Canadian Museum. Featured items include an in-depth look at a Chinese Freemasons’ lantern, handmade by a master craftsman, and striking historical photographs depicting children in Victoria’s Chinatown celebrating Chinese New Year in 1900. Sky-high views: July brings opening of Malahat Skywalk Summer visitors will get the chance to experience the much-anticipated opening of the south Island’s newest attraction: the Malahat Skywalk. Located about 40 minutes north of downtown Victoria, near the Malahat Summit, the Skywalk features an elevated wooden pathway through an Arbutus forest leading to a gentle, accessible spiral ramp climbing to a 40-metre-high sightseeing lookout affording magnificent views of the Finlayson Arm and distant coastal mountains. Inspired by similar forest walks in Europe, the elevated wooden pathway promises to be a world-class experience combining nature-based and cultural tourism. The project will also see the construction of a welcome centre, retail stores and a coffee shop. Upon announcing the project, George Harry Jr., a councillor with the Malahat Nation, said the First Nation is proud to partner on the Malahat Skywalk project. “Not only is it a tourism experience that speaks to sustainability and the connection to our land, but it will also provide opportunities for many generations of the Malahat Nation to come.

Pour one on for Victoria’s Ale Trail The cradle of the “craft beer revolution,” Victoria is home to Canada’s first brewpub and some of BC’s most popular breweries. It’s no surprise, then, that Victoria’s Ale Trail – part of the BC Ale Trail – is an experience worth savouring for beer fans.
Water, among many others – or hop aboard the Victoria Harbour Ferry’s Pickle Pub Crawl for a unique way to explore. The Pedaler also offers two-wheel tour options. Outside of the downtown, the neighbouring communities of Vic West and Esquimalt are home to several more breweries, including Spinnakers, Canada’s original brewpub, Hoyne and Lighthouse breweries.
Today, more than a dozen separate breweries operate in Greater Victoria area, each with its own unique style, many right in and around downtown. Intersperse brewery and brewpub visits as you explore downtown’s other amenities – excellent selections include Canoe Brewpub, Phillips Brewing, Whistle Buoy Brewing and Moon Under

SIP & SAVOUR SOOKE Tucked into Vancouver Island’s southern west coast, Sooke is a small community that’s big on flavour. While only about 40 minutes from downtown Victoria, the small town feels a world away, positioned between the Pacific Ocean and forested hills. Is it any wonder this wild landscape is an inspiration for brewers and distillers alike? Sooke Oceanside Brewing – or S.O.B. – is an unassuming craft brewery that’s been handcrafting delicious brews since 2016. Stop by to explore locally inspired pours like Renfrew Red Ale, Leechtown lager and Saseenos session ale at their hand-built tasting room.
In town, discover the award-winning Sooke Brewing Company – a brewery built for this place on the wild West Coast. In a tasting room that pays homage to local logging and fishing history, pull up a stool overlooking the working part of the brewery, or relax on the patio. Pours range from a summer-perfect small saison to the barrel-aged foreign extra stout. Behind Bad Dog Brewing Company’s colourful labels are a fine selection of beers from the family-owned and operated micro brewery about 10 minutes’ drive outside Sooke. Pick up your tasting flight at the take-out window and relax on the treed patio to sip your way through these tasty West Coast pours.
Two more must-stop spots include the modern possibilities of an ancient libation at Tugwell Creek Honey Farm & Meadery, – BC’s first meadery – and Sheringham Distillery coastal craft spirits. Named for a point of land a little farther up the coast road in Shirley, delicious small-batch handmade spirits showcase BC ingredients. Cheers!

The Art of Anarchy
The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria showcases new work by Howie Tsui in a solo exhibition running from June 12 to October 24. In Retainers of Anarchy, Tsui considers wuxia, a traditional form of martial arts literature that expanded into 20th-century popular film and television, as a narrative tool for dissidence and resistance. Crafted narratives and characters often from lower social classes that uphold chivalric ideals against oppressive forces during unstable times, the People’s Republic of China placed wuxia under heavy censorship for fear of arousing anti-government sentiment. However, practitioners advanced the form in Hong Kong making it one of the most popular genres of Chinese fiction. The title work is a 25-metre scroll-like video installation that references life during the Song dynasty (960–1279 CE) and more recent digitizations of historical scrolls. Tsui’s version undermines the idealized portraiture of social cohesion found in the digitized scrolls by setting the narrative in Kowloon’s notorious walled city – an ungoverned tenement of disenfranchised refugees in Hong Kong which was demolished in 1994. SCULPTURE WALK
Backdropped by Mt Baker and the Salish Sea, the Sidney Sculpture Walk outdoor gallery begins in Beacon Park and continues along the Waterfront Walkway. At 2.5-kilometres long, the oceanfront walk offers a flat, barrier-free surface lined with benches and picnic tables, beautiful gardens and stunning views of Sidney Island, Mount Baker and the ocean beyond. Passing Port Sidney Marina, Beacon Park and Beacon Wharf at the end of Beacon Avenue, the walk continues past Diver’s Point, the Bevan Fishing Pier and Eastview Park. For a longer walk, continue past the Sidney/ Anacortes Ferry Terminal, Tulista Park and on to the recently refurbished Lochside Drive section of the walkway, which features an upper and lower path and many benches. deep dive ORCAS into the world of
Prepare to take a deep dive into the world of the West Coast’s magnificent orcas with the Royal BC Museum’s much-anticipated new feature exhibition. After a year-long postponement due to COVID-19, the visually stunning Orcas: Our Shared Future exhibition is delighting visitors, and continues right through Jan. 9, 2022. Diving into the stories and science that surround the magnificent orca – the spirit of British Columbia’s wild coast and apex predator of all oceans – admission is by timed tickets, available at rbcm. ca/orcas. Through dramatic displays – including three life-size orca replicas and the skeletons of Rhapsody (J32) and her unborn calf – visitors will explore currents of ecological activism, popular culture and Indigenous beliefs to gain a deeper understanding of how orcas and humans are inextricably connected. “This is a timely and challenging story – and one that we are uniquely qualified to tell,” says Royal BC Museum Board Chair and acting CEO Dr. Daniel Muzyka. “Our unique collections, curatorial expertise, and physical and emotional proximity to orcas and oceans combine in an edifying and ultimately

hopeful experience that affirms we are all part of nature – not apart from nature.” Among the 100+ artifacts on display are rare cultural objects by Indigenous artists, including an Articulated Dance Mask by Richard Hunt (Kwaguilth); an intricately carved Gold Killer Whale Box by Bill Reid (Haida); and a specially commissioned painting by Haida manga artist Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas. The exhibition is complemented by a beautifully illustrated companion publication that brings together the work of marine biologists, Indigenous knowledge keepers, poets, artists and storytellers. The best-selling Spirits of the Coast: Orcas in Science, Art and History ($29.95; edited by Dr. Martha Black, Dr. Lorne Hammond, and Dr. Gavin Hanke with Nikki Sanchez), is currently available through local bookshops, the Royal Museum Shop and online at rbcm.ca/books. all ages – don’t miss saying ‘Hi!’ to Woolly the mammoth. For a little high-flying action, check out two favourite local attractions – Wildplay, about 20 minutes from downtown Victoria, and Adrenaline, offering a thrilling zipline adventure through the West Coast forest near Sooke.
2. HIKE Prefer to keep your feet firmly on the ground? You’re spoiled for choice here on the South Island, with options from beautiful Beacon Hill Park in the heart of the city to the rugged trails of Goldstream, Matheson and East Sooke parks. For commanding views across the region, Mt. Tolmie and Mt. Douglas are both a short drive from downtown.
For those who prefer to undertake their explorations on two wheels, the Galloping Goose and Lochside trail network is a regional treasure that will take you from the urban core to the South Island’s pastoral countryside and wild West Coast. The accessible, picturesque trail follows a former railway line – ideal for a scenic cycling tour or a family excursion. The Galloping Goose, a multi-use 55k trail from Victoria to Sooke, is the first section of the Trans-Canada Trail. It intersects with the Lochside Trail in Saanich, venturing out through the rolling farmlands of the Saanich Peninsula.

4. GORGEOUS GARDENS Victoria is known as the Garden City for good reason – public and private gardens alike bloom with colour and fragrance virtually year-round. Summer show-stoppers include the magnificent Butchart Gardens, a National Historic Site, but other not-to-be-missed options include Abkhazi Gardens and the Government House gardens, both just a few minutes’ drive from downtown. At the University of Victoria, Finnerty Gardens offers a peaceful and picturesque escape, while the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific, with its numerous demonstration gardens, has earned its well-deserved moniker of “Victoria’s garden for gardeners.” Need more ideas? The size of these ocean-going vessels means the chances of feeling every wave is greatly reduced, while also accommodating comfortable distancing among guests. Inside, the floor-to-ceiling windows on the lower deck allow for 360-degree panoramic views without being outside, and if you get hungry or thirsty, there’s a snack bar onboard.

Regulations require that all wildlife watching boats stay a minimum of 200 metres (Canada) and 200 yards (USA) away from orcas. “As the distance requirements from orcas and other marine mammals continue to increase, we continue to be involved in high-level discussions with regulators and local conservation groups,” Moore says. “We have made a decision to increase the size and height of our boats to maintain relative quality in the viewing experience and to reduce the acoustic and carbon footprints per passenger.”

THE ESSENTIAL CITY NEIGHBOURHOODS
INNER HARBOUR / DOWNTOWN The Inner Harbour is the most often photographed and most easily recognized place in Victoria, and home to several renowned landmarks, including the Legislative Buildings and The Fairmont Empress Hotel. Nearby, Bastion Square is the site of the original Fort Victoria and currently home to shops, restaurants and services. Other downtown attractions include the Royal BC Museum, the National Geographic IMAX Theatre, The Bateman Centre and the Victoria Bug Zoo. Shoppers will love Government Street, LoJo (lower Johnson Street), Fort Street and the Bay Centre. Take in views of the Inner Harbour with a stroll along the pedestrian walkway beginning near Belleville and Menzies streets and following the waterfront over the blue Johnson Street Bridge into neighbouring Vic West and Esquimalt. NEIGHBOURHOODS NEAR DOWNTOWN Several picturesque, historic neighbourhoods surround downtown and are within easy walking distance. Just south of downtown, James Bay is Victoria’s oldest residential neighbourhood, bordered by water on three sides and Beacon Hill Park on the fourth. Beacon Hill has been Victoria’s best-loved green space since the 1850s, with pathways, gardens and a seasonal children’s petting zoo. On the east side of the park is Fairfield, a residential neighbourhood with a trendy collection of shops and cafés called Cook Street Village. East of downtown, Rockland is a prestigious area of older, stately homes; attractions include Craigdarroch Castle, Government House Gardens and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Northwest of downtown, over the Johnson Street Bridge, Esquimalt is home to CFB Esquimalt, beautiful Saxe Point Park and CFB Esquimalt’s museum. OAK BAY This charming area of Tudor-styled homes, oak trees and manicured gardens is a few minutes’ drive from downtown. Oak Bay Village and the Avenue are the main shopping areas with excellent shops and galleries, featuring antiques, art, gifts, china, fashion and jewellery. As you stroll Victoria’s Inner Harbour, taking in the iconic architecture of the Parliament Buildings and Fairmont Empress Hotel, a third building will likely catch your eye. The historic Steamship Terminal is today home to the Bateman Gallery, a superb venue for the work of Canada’s most celebrated wildlife artist and other rotating exhibits. Also on-site is the Steamship Bar and Grill, with views over the harbour.

Market Square is the “heart” of Old Town and features a collection of shops and restaurants in restored heritage buildings. Victoria’s Chinatown is the oldest in Canada. The Gate of Harmonious Interest is a landmark constructed to recognize Chinese immigrants’ participation in establishing the City of Victoria. SAANICH AND CORDOVA BAY Saanich is a large residential area beginning north of downtown. Highlights
include Mt. Douglas Park, with hiking trails and panoramic views, Elk/Beaver Lake Park, a great spot for watersports, walking and fishing, the gardens at the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific, Swan Lake/Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary. Just east of Elk/Beaver Lake Park is the seaside neighbourhood of Cordova Bay, valued for its rural beauty and unparalleled views of Haro Strait and the San Juan Islands. Highlights here include a charming collection of shops and galleries called Mattick’s Farm, and the Cordova Bay and The Ridge golf courses SAANICH PENINSULA AND SIDNEY The pastoral Saanich Peninsula is home to a number of excellent attractions, including the famous Butchart Gardens, Victoria Butterfly Gardens and several wineries. Enjoy good cycling opportunities and pleasant drives throughout the Peninsula. Sidney is a charming seaside town with picturesque marinas, oceanside walking paths and great restaurants, galleries and shops. WEST SHORE COMMUNITIES AND SOOKE West of Victoria along Highway 14, discover the communities of View Royal, Highlands, Colwood, Langford, Metchosin and Sooke, which offer a wide variety of outdoor activities. West of Sooke, find beautiful scenery at French, Sombrio and Botanical beaches. THE COWICHAN VALLEY Head north from Victoria and over the Malahat Drive and be rewarded with a visit to the Cowichan Valley – a diverse community of wineries, picturesque farms, lakes and ocean, in addition to vibrant cities and villages to explore. Duncan is the largest community, with shopping, dining, Aboriginal attractions and a wide variety of services, but be sure to also enjoy a leisurely visit to historic Cowichan Bay, Chemainus and Ladysmith. The shipwreck of the SS Valencia is well known as one of the worst maritime disasters in an area along Vancouver Island’s west coast known as “the graveyard of the Pacific.” Its tale lives on in Victoria through ghost stories and has even captured the attention of an international audience. But what actually played out during this dramatic sinking? What are the human stories behind the infamous scene of the shipwreck? This exhibit at the Maritime Museum of British Columbia, on through September 2, tells the story of the SS Valencia and considers what conditions led to its horrific ending.
