Stars of the summer stage From the light and breezy to timeless classics on an outdoor stage, theatre is a true summer indulgence here in Victoria. July 24 to August 12 brings Mom’s the Word 3: Nest ½ Empty to the historic Belfry Theatre. Written and performed by the worldrenowned creators of Mom’s the Word, the team brings a new generation of laughs: Their kids are grown, their marriages have “evolved,” and their bodies are backfiring. Life doesn’t get any prettier, but it never strays far from the ludicrous, the ribald and the poignant, as the moms continue to mine their personal history for every embarrassing detail. The Canadian premier of Lucas Hnath’s A Doll’s House, Part comes to the Belfry stage September Langham Court Theatre presents 16 to October 14, A Chorus of Disapproval. exploring what happens 15 years after the dramatic conclusion of Ibsen’s A Doll’s House. Layered and very current, A Doll’s House, Part 2 was nominated for the 2017 Tony Award – Best Play.

At Langham Court Theatre, a diffident widower attempts to escape loneliness by joining the local amateur light operatic society in A Chorus of Disapproval, June 6 to 23, before Blue Bridge Theatre presents The Drawer Boy, July 3 to 15. One of the most successful plays in Canadian theatre history, Michael Healey’s touching comic drama about South Ontario rural life has been described by Canadian novelist, poet and dramatist Michael Ondaatje as ‘one of the few plays to create an authentic tradition on our culture. Next up is the Sweeney Todd, July 31 to August 12, in what promises to be a fun, if gruesome, turn at the classic musical. One of the highlights of the summer season is the Victoria Shakespeare Festival, which this year brings Pericles and The Tempest to the outdoor stage. This not-to-be-missed summer experience runs from July 5 to 28 at Camosun College’s Lansdowne Campus and August 2 to 4 in Esquimalt.

While our collective fascination with Egypt may centre on the pyramids, intricate death rituals and glittering treasures of the Pharaohs, much of the rest of ancient Egyptian life has remained shrouded in mystery.

Corteo, Cirque du Soleil
CIRQUE CELEBRATION
Cirque du Soleil returns to Victoria October 4 to 7 with Corteo, a unique production that premiered in Montreal in April 2005 before going on to amaze 8 million people across four continents. Corteo is a joyous procession – a festive parade imagined by a clown. The show brings together the passion of the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to plunge the audience into a theatrical world of fun, comedy and spontaneity situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth. With seven shows over four days at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Arena, the cast includes 51 acrobats, musicians, singers and actors from around the world, and the music, by turns lyrical and playful, carries Corteo through a timeless celebration in which illusion teases reality.

THE ESSENTIAL CITY NEIGHBOURHOODS
INNER HARBOUR / DOWNTOWN The Inner Harbour is the most often photographed and most easily recognized place in Victoria, and home to several renowned landmarks, including the Legislative Buildings and The Fairmont Empress Hotel. Nearby, Bastion Square is the site of the original Fort Victoria and currently home to shops, restaurants and services. Other downtown attractions include the Royal BC Museum, the National Geographic IMAX Theatre, The Bateman Centre and the Victoria Bug Zoo. Shoppers will love Government Street, LoJo (lower Johnson Street), Fort Street and the Bay Centre. Take in views of the Inner Harbour with a stroll along the pedestrian walkway beginning near Belleville and Menzies streets and following the waterfront over the blue Johnson Street Bridge into neighbouring Vic West and Esquimalt. NEIGHBOURHOODS NEAR DOWNTOWN Several picturesque, historic neighbourhoods surround downtown and
are within easy walking distance. Just south of downtown, James Bay is Victoria’s oldest residential neighbourhood, bordered by water on three sides and Beacon Hill Park on the fourth. Beacon Hill has been Victoria’s best-loved green space since the 1850s, with pathways, gardens and a seasonal children’s petting zoo. On the east side of the park is Fairfield, a residential neighbourhood with a trendy collection of shops and cafés called Cook Street Village. East of downtown, Rockland is a prestigious area of older, stately homes; attractions include Craigdarroch Castle, Government House Gardens and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Northwest of downtown, over the Johnson Street Bridge, Esquimalt is home to CFB Esquimalt, beautiful Saxe Point Park and CFB Esquimalt’s museum. OAK BAY This charming area of Tudor-styled homes, oak trees and manicured gardens is a few minutes' drive from downtown. Oak Bay Village and the Avenue are the main shopping areas

SAANICH AND CORDOVA BAY Saanich is a large residential area beginning north of downtown. Highlights include Mt. Douglas Park, with hiking trails and panoramic views, Elk/Beaver Lake Park, a great spot for watersports, walking and fishing, the gardens at the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific, Swan Lake/Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary.
