The amazing travels of Fester the cat The Cape West Coast is wellknown across South Africa for its friendly and helpful people. This was proven true over the past seven weeks as the community of Langebaan joined hands – many without even knowing just how big the “net” was that they were helping to weave. All this to find a lost cat and in the process confirming the kind and generous spirit of the people of this land. “Fester”hadarrivedinVelddrif with his family from Johannesburg a mere week prior to him getting lost in Langebaan – just as he was being offloaded at the Langebaan kennels. He is the undisputed leader of a family pack of four dogs and two other cats and did not take kindly to being transported in an apple box from Velddrif to Langebaan and made for the bushes as soon as he was

out of the box and not yet inside the kennels. He was lost within two minutes. For seven weeks his progress was tracked with the help of Antjie, an animal communicator from Cape Town (www.petpsychic.co.za ). Fester’s owners followed her accurate leads across the hills and farms around Langebaan, distributed flyers, put up posters and most importantly, put a weekly ad in the Weslander to alert the public. Lizette van der Westhuizen and Ally Gericke of Langebaan Animal Care immediately joined in the search together with local veterinarians Drs Derette Kotzé and Gonda Melck and especially the incredibly dedicated staff of Longacres Animal Hospital. The response was huge as dozens of people phoned to inform “Team Fester” of possible sightings. Unfortunately to no avail . . . until last Saturday when local Langebaan artist

Skakel gerus in by ons buurtwag en gemeenskapsforum.

Snotkop a huge hit at Club Mykonos

Over 400 fans flocked to the Athene Conference Centre, at Club Mykonos resort, on 26 April to see one of South Africa’s most popular singers, Snotkop. One can understand why he always steals the heart of the crowd, with his talent, good looks, energy and his passion for music and why he won so many South African Music awards and is such a popular television personality. Mykonos Casino hosted 25 VIP guests with their partners at the event, who were treated to snacks and special welcome drinks prior to the show. Throughout the one hour show, guests were hanging on Snotkop’s lips and were jumping, singing and jiving along to all their favourite songs.

Snotkop rocked the socks off his fans and especially the children, with his wacky lyrics and larger-than-life stage presence and created such a warm and electric atmosphere. He absolutely amazed the crowd with his famous hits like Parapapa, Ek Laaik van Jol and Dis ’n Land. Fans were absolutely swept off their feet by his energetic performance and unique style. Club Mykonos received such positive feedback from the VIP guests and they had such a memorable evening and will treasure his performance for the rest of their lives. What makes Snotkop’s performance even more memorable is the way he interacts with the children and even did autographs for all his fans for an hour and a half afterwards.

Langebaan Lagoon Celebration fun Langebaan was abuzz on the last weekend in April as the seaside town successfully hosted the third Langebaan Lagoon Celebration. Lorika Malan, marketing manager of the Saldanha Bay Tourism Organisation (SBTO), said the event was a great success and is growing every year. The SBTO, Local Tourism Association of Langebaan, many eager volunteers and businesses worked hard to make this impressive event happen. The weather played along all weekend except for a light downpour of a few minutes on Saturday morning while the military was doing a dog demonstration on the beach. But just as sudden as it started, the rain stopped and it was fun and sunshine

all the way. The celebrations started on Friday afternoon with a march by the 4 Special Forces, Langebaan and the SA Army Marching Band from Youngsfield. On Saturday morning deputy mayor, Rosil Jager officially opened the event with a short speech before the MC, Steyn Fourie took to the stage. Weslander held their popular touch rugby tournament on Main Beach. Some of the activities over the two days included a cake baking competition, craft beer festival, classic car and tractor display and the Hobie Tiger Nationals and stalls galore. Malan thanks all their sponsors. Without their valuable donations, sponsorships and assistance, all these events would not have been possible.

‘Budget doesn’t reflect the wishes of the people’ This month we report on the 2014/2015 Saldanha Bay Municipal budget, progress on implementation of tourism infrastructure projects, Transnet dust issues. The due date for public comment on the draft 2014/2015 municipal budget was 22 April 2014. Again the council failed to engage the general public/ratepayers effectively to constructively comment on the budget. The Ward 6 committee was denied the opportunity to advise the ward councillor on the Draft Budget and the LRRA twice had to insist on an opportunity to get clarity on a rather opaque draft document. The lack of Integrated Development Plan (IDP) inputs from the community also shone in its absence. The

LRRA compiled a comprehensive comment on the Draft Budget and submitted it to council on the due date. These comments were circulated in our first Newsletter to all LRRA members. We are of the opinion that this Draft Budget does not reflect the wishes of the people. No provision was made for any road maintenance or for the expansion of the CBD. Loads of money was allocated to financially unsustainable and costly resorts and bettering of staff amenities. The budget included a R600 000 ultra violet screen to kill bacteria and a R300 000 development of the water-retention dam just north of the wastewater treatment plant, with the primary purpose of bettering the treatment of sewage water before discharging it for irrigation purposes. The retention-dam development should also contribute to the betterment of the es-

thetics before entering town. We just hope council does not think this is going to give them our thumbs up for the continuous discharge thereof into the lagoon. The Uitsig Street stairs project seems to be finally on its way. The contractors seem to have found a resting place on the Dutch Reformed Church grounds. Just hope this is not going to drive the abutting neighbours nuts over the next few months. The commenting period on the Bree Street boardwalk project closed on 14 April. Besides the opposition from a few individual Schapensicht property owners, with a few small adjustments it received thumbs up from Tourism, the LRRA and SANParks. We are currently busy with a similar planning process for the upgrading of Alabama Street tourism node, including a proper pedestrian walkway, paved parking and

complementing street furniture. Transnet was caught out with not being serious about their plans to allow all affected parties to register for possible compensation due to staining of private properties. The LRRA insisted that all property owners be offered the fair and reasonable opportunity to be invited to register should properties be stained. This plea was initially rejected by Transnet and we took it upon ourselves to notify all property owners with such problems to register with Rejean Viljoen at rejean.viljoen@transnet.net or 083 275 3140. Please CC your registration to info@langebaanratepayers.co.za The Cape High Court hearing on the “Shark Bay development” between the LRRA and Dormell Properties 391 (Pty) Ltd starts on 12 May 2014. Till next time, Jaco Kotze, Chairperson LRRA.

FOTO: ONSUGAR

By hulle is Ernie Roworth, uitgewer van Weslander.

Blinkskyn se manne glimlag breed oor hulle welverdiende derde plek.

Langebaan impresses minister Langebaan has been blessed by wonderful weather these past months resulting in a bumper season for tourism and businesses in general. We now enter the period of the year that locals refer to as our “secret season” where we have perfect wind-free days and our environment is rejuvenated by rain. I would like to acknowledge the organisers of the Langebaan Lagoon Celebration for a highly successful event held over the weekend of 26/27 April. They succeeded in their aim of bringing the community together and showcasing our wonderful village and lagoon. The event attracted approximately 10 000 visitors while also serving and entertaining the local community. 4 Special Forces Regiment has been an integral part of the community of Langebaan since 1978.

On Friday 25 April they exercised their right of Freedom of the Town, presented to them by the Saldanha Bay Municipality (SBM) in 2003, by presenting a parade and marching through the streets of Langebaan bearing arms with flags flying. The Vikings, as they are fondly referred to, are one of South Africa’s crack units and we are privileged to host them in our town. It is time Langebaners accepted that the Regiment has an important role to play in the defence of our country and that they must prepare for operations accordingly. The MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism in the Western Cape, Alan Winde, visited Langebaan on 25 April. He paid an impromptu visit to businesses on Breë Street, had lunch with the water sport fraterni-

ty, met with members of the tourism industry and addressed the business community at a dinner at Mykonos. Winde was highly impressed with our village and its potential. He emphasised that the Saldanha Industrial Development Zone would have a positive impact on economic growth in the region over the next five years with an injection of R5 billion. The SBM is in the process of finalising the 2014-15 budget for implementation on 1 July. I would like to thank all those who participated in the process. Balancing the budget to ensure service delivery throughout the SBM’s area of responsibility and maintaining and providing infrastructure is no mean feat. There will not be enough funding available to imple-

ment all the requirements identified in the Integrated Development Plan simultaneously and we will have to accept a phased approach. This will require patience from our community. Please feel free to participate in all the processes in this regard. My “champion” for the month is Colonel Henri Nagel, Officer Commanding 4 Special Forces Regiment, for services rendered to the community of Langebaan during his command. Thumbs up for Langebaan! Be positive, take responsibility and make a difference where you are. André Kruger, Councillor Langebaan Tel: 022 772 2412, Cell: 073 664 0506, Email: info@wowlangebaan.co.za

Last lagoon catch before winter The days are really starting to shrink and the mornings are cold, which makes early morning angling a real effort. On Easter weekend I decided to go and try for some stumpnose, so I told my crew to be at my home at 06:15 so we could avoid the crowd launching at the yacht club. Guess what? We were the only boat launching. By 08:00 we knew why as wehadnothadabite.Coming home at 11:00 our total catch for the day was four rock fish, three steentjies, two sharks and only one stumpnose. April was a better month than March, especially over the first couple of weeks. The stumpnose bit as if there were no tomorrow and most of our shore anglers caught their quota and had

enough fish for the traditional Easter pickled fish. There was no large elf run this year but quite a few of over three kilogrammes were caught. Two exceptional catches were a steenbras of 15 kg caught by Dirk Visser and a geelbekof8 kgcaughtbyJaco Coetzee. This last fish was landed in spite of the attentions of a large seal who thought it would make a lovely meal. And then arrived Easter weekend arrived! The fish simply know when to go off the bite, literally hundreds of anglers and hardly a fish caught! The only decent fish I know of was caught by an old friend Malcolm Paul on the Friday and that was a yellowtail weighing 6 kg. I was fortunate enough to

Nico Co etzee with a steenbras weighing 14,72 kg.

be invited by long-time friend Colin Attwood to go along with him and his second-year students from UCT on a day’s angling on the lagoon. What made this so interesting was that they are experimenting using cameras to photograph the fish around a bucket full of pilchards. While they did this, we had to fish close to this site to compare our angling results to what was seen on the camera. While up in the restricted area, the camera photographed a kob and a yellowtail, but the anglers were only catching steentjies. Researchers are hoping that by using cameras they will in fact have a better

record of fish stocks and will no longer need experimental angling trips. We are hoping to convince

Colin to come up and show us some of this footage taken by the cameras. We should all try to catch our last lagoon fish before they stop feeding. On the other hand the snoek can arrive any day now which is also great fun. For the more hardy anglers, you can still catch stumpnose even during the coldest months if you are prepared to run down to the Saldanha harbour area.

Teen beats top SA swimmers Twenty-two swimmers, of the 99 entrants who participated in this year’s annual Island Swim, were aged 16 and younger and a seventeen-year-old set a new course record of 35:28. Freezing water, 93 finishers and a 10-year-old completing the long course swim in a costume! That, in a nutshell, was what the fifth annual Around the Island Swim in the Langebaan Lagoon on Monday 28 April was all about. The swim was originally organised by a group of Langebaan locals as an open water adventure swim that would also cater for all levels of swimmers such as the 1,6 km (one mile) event and the 3,2 km Around the Island event for more advanced swimmers. Swimmers participate in wetsuit or “naked” categories, with Guppie (13 and under), Junior (14-16), Open, Vet (40-49) and Masters (over 50) age groups. Swimmers in the flagship 3,2 km “naked” swim compete for the prestigious Pearly’s/ Strandloper men’s and women’s floating trophies. Past winners include Phil Emslie, former SA junior and current SA master’s swimming champion and holder of the world record for the fastest Ice Mile. Phil was unable to defend his title this year and with another past win-

PHOTO: TRISH GOOSEN ner, Danie Marais, a former winner of the 2,5 km Cadiz Human Rights day swim, the Youth Day swim and SA representative at the FINA World Champs in Italy and Shanghai also unable to attend, the event was looking for a new champion. Phil and Danie have ruled the event for the past three years, but the organisers thought this year’s victor would be either the English Channel swimmer Anton Botha, who lost narrowly to Phil in a sprint up the beach last year, or Lisa Cowling, winner of the 2012 Deep Blue Invitational Swim at St Helena Bay and third last year by a small margin. But it was 17-year-old Rudolf Visser who showed his

form and class to lead the field home by over three minutes and claim the trophy from first lady Lisa in second and Anton in third. Rudolf has been an SA open water swimming representative since 2012 and as a firsttime entrant in this event, his entry slipped in under the radar. He broke the previous record convincingly by more than two minutes in a time of 35 minutes and 28 seconds. Three 10-year-olds also participated in the races. Erin Maltby and Luke Cloete-Hopkins finished the mile event and Michael Levitt amazingly swam the 3,2 km event in a costume. Organisers were reluctant to accept his entry at first as they had not even catered for

an u. 13 age category in the long swim, but his dad showed them his pedigree and his results showed why he is good enough to start and finish this event. Curro Langebaan walked away with the R2 000 prize for the first four-member school team. More local flavour was added with the participation of the four Floating Ducks led by Lynne Pearson of P.L.A.Y. The water temperature on the day was measured at a chilly 14°C, but there were much colder upwellings of water, particularly on the southern and western sides of Schaapen Island. There were some very cold swimmers exiting the water but with Derrick Frazer and his team from Big Bay Events on hand to monitor safety, and blankets and hot chocolate provided by Pearly’s Restaurant, they all recovered well. The event also provided an ideal tune-up for the cold water swimmers who participated in the Freedom Swim from Robben Island to Big Bay on 3 May. Full results are available at www.langebaanevents.co.za. The event was also filmed for the SuperSwimmer programme. The organisers would like to thank all the sponsors and congratulate all the swimmers who made the event possible.– David Warmerdam, event organiser.
