After a surprise proposal on a cobblestoned street in Paris, Ashleigh and David planned their romantic wintry wedding at historic Abbotsford Convent. Their day is a visual and veritable feast, including a personally designed menu, sumptuous florals and a plum and berry toned palette adding gorgeous colour and warmth.
Planning Experience “The planning was both challenging and fun! Having never created an event of this magnitude before, it was a daunting process. I was given some great advice when I was starting to feel the pressure. It was to make a list of things you are worried about that you have control over, and another list of things you don’t have control over (the weather, for example). When you are done, tear up the second list and let these worries go! Instantly you will feel much lighter, and more ready to tackle the things you can control.�
Personal Touches “Our wedding reflected us as a couple by being all about love, friends, and food. We were married by one of our close friends, and put together the ceremony ourselves. This was so important to us as we wanted the ceremony to be immensely personal, speak to our views on love, and reflect what we want our marriage to be.�
First Look “We wanted a short gap between the ceremony and reception, and are not really ones for tradition, so we decided to see each other before the ceremony and have the bulk of our photos taken beforehand. While the initial rationale was a practical one, it ended up being very special and emotional. Having that moment together, just us, before the whirlwind of the ceremony and reception meant we really got to savour the moment.�
The Girls “We were looking for a simple, classic shape in a deep mulberry to fit the wintry colour scheme. We paired the dress with a delicate headpiece in gold to add some glamour, and a bold lipstick to match.�
The Boys “We wanted everything to look very classic – deep navy, white shirts, and black dress shoes. David’s suit was custom made, and the groomsmen wore dark blue bowties as opposed to David’s black satin one.”
Ceremony Styling “The centrepiece was a wrought iron screen embellished with flowers, which was later moved inside to serve as a backdrop for the cake-cutting and speeches. Festoon lighting strung between the eaves and candles in gold mercury glass hurricane lamps lined the aisle, adding a warm glow that complemented the late afternoon light perfectly.�
Finding the Dress “From the beginning, I knew I would be unlikely to find what I wanted off the rack. One Day Bridal stood out due to their service and ability to create timeless, yet fashion-forward gowns. Once we had decided on a general shape and lace, I had a series of fittings during which I saw my gown come together. It was a highly emotional, oncein-a-lifetime experience. The matching veil was a last minute choice, but I’m so glad we went with it!”
The Reception “There were three rows of long tables with floral centrepieces, lots of candles, and a sprig of laurel next to each guest’s menu. The real showstopper was the hanging installation – large garlands of greenery with an incredible floral chandelier above the bridal table. We are not the craftiest couple by any means, so we left as much to the professionals as possible! However, each guest received a miniature jar of lemon myrtle and thyme infused sea salt made by David.”
Best Advice 1. Try not to stress too much! You need to make sure you allow yourself to have some fun. Focus on what is important and don’t worry too much about the rest. 2. Delegate a bridesmaid to put together an “emergency bag” for the big day, with everything you could possibly need – needle and thread, painkillers, hairspray, breath mints, stain remover... the list goes on and on! 3. Remember, you will never please everyone with your wedding, so just focus on pleasing yourselves! Don’t get hung up on rules or tradition – do what makes you happy.

It’s easy to see this lovely couple stepping out of a 1920’s black and white film. Nikita describes she and Adam as ‘old souls’, so it’s only fitting their day is the epitome of old Hollywood glamour. Hosting an elegant luncheon in a grand dining room amongst romantic blooms and luxurious gold touches, you can almost hear the clink of champagne glasses!
Planning Experience “I loved everything about our wedding, even down to the pressure of planning it all in nine months. It was such a buzz! I was very involved with everything and had a clear vision as to how I wanted it to look and feel. My favourites would have to be my outfit, designing the stationery and styling the venue.”
Heritage Venue “His Majesty's Theatre is a beautiful venue with elegant gold baroque details on its panelled walls, French windows with big velvet curtains opening onto balconies, and an incredible marble staircase. I wanted to enhance all these period features while making our wedding a memorable day.”
The Ceremony “We took advantage of the lovely windows, using them as a way to frame and light the ceremony. They were flanked by two pedestals holding flowers. A baroque table was brought in for the signing table and guests were seated on gold tiffany chairs with ivory cushions.�
Bridal Party Look “I wanted to keep their outfits simple as the flowers would be an explosion of colour. The boys were in navy suits with black buttons on the white shirts, black bowties and black trim on the suits. The girls were in navy silk dresses with black shoes, embellished clutches and hair in pin curl updos.�
Cocktail Hour “After the ceremony, guests moved to another room for drinks and canapes. It had beautiful navy panelled walls, with one covered in a deep red velvet curtain. Against the curtain, a table held our polaroid camera and props so guests could take some happy snaps. Bar tables were also set up with gold sequin tablecloths and decorated with flowers and moss in a mix of teacups and saucers.”
Favourite Moment “Sneaking off with Adam after the ceremony to admire the flowers downstairs and appreciate all our hard work. It was a joy to see everything come together and have a private moment. I was so happy with the look and feel of the whole day.”
"The most important thing was keeping the day true to ourselves, which most of the time meant trying something a little different."
Reception Styling “For lunch, we moved back to the original room which was now set up with large round tables. One central flower arrangement was seated on a wooden block per table, surrounded by tealights, bird’s nests and books. Gold cutlery and our wedding favour teacups, featuring homemade treats wrapped in tulle and personalised tags, completed the tablescape. The adjoining room was used as a sitting room, with a chaise lounge and ottomans in red velvet. ”
Top Tips 1. Enjoy every second, even those difficult days of planning as they go so fast. 2. If you feel like you should be including someone, whether it be one of the bridal party or a guest, don't hold back. It's better not to regret it later. 3. Source props for your fun photos from family members - my granddad’s top hat was my favourite. 4. Make sure you wear in your heels!

marriage celebrant Before the ceremony begins, I mention that, "The bride and groom have asked me to invite you all to please leave your phones and cameras in your bag or in your pocket, so that you can be present and really enjoy their ceremony with them. They'd love to look out and see your smiling faces." Saying this in a warm and friendly way, that guests know it is for their enjoyment as well as the bride and groom’s, is important.

I always talk to my couples about this as I've noticed that little notes on invitations aren’t effective and neither are chalkboard signs. So I recommend they ask their celebrant to say, "Please no cameras - professional photographers are here to capture all the special moments." Photography Savvy Photography
What should I be looking for in a 'getting ready' location? - Emma Nayler -
photographer Lots of windows or glass doors, white walls and ceilings will create a bright, clean atmosphere. I love shooting in moodier, character filled spaces like an old farm house B&B or the family home, but it will look very different to the light and bright photos of a white hotel room. Try to let as much natural light in as possible in any space. If you plan to get photos of both the groom and the bride getting ready, try and keep the locations as close by as possible, because less travel time means more photo time!

photographer Natural light is always best - a nicely lit lounge room works well, with any clutter cleared out beforehand. Time flies while you’re getting ready, so make sure your bridal party and parents are ready one hour before you. That way it's less stressful and they can focus on helping you.

Setting spray! Urban Decay have a great cooling mist that brings down the temperature of the makeup and makes it stay put all day. If shine still occurs, blot away with translucent powder - it's fantastic at eliminating shine without leaving behind a residue or build up. For very oily skin, skip the moisturiser and put a layer of powder before foundation - Hourglass Ethereal Powder is great! This will hide enlarged pores and soak up excess oil.

“I never had a clear idea of what I wanted my wedding dress to be like. I just went into it wanting something a little bit different, and not too traditional. I was actually a little surprised by what I chose! I couldn’t stop smiling when I put it on - it had the right balance of being relaxed and romantic, but felt special with lots of gorgeous detail.�

Bridal Party “For the boys, open collars with pocket squares felt subtle yet still polished. I couldn’t go past the gorgeous tulle skirts for the girls - so whimsical! We wanted something that felt winterappropriate, but not too heavy, and the black tulle was the perfect balance. I loved that the whole ensemble had such a romantic feel to it.�
Sweet Ceremony
“We had been quite particular with what we wanted to say to each other and were really emotional, so saying our vows was quite overwhelming and such a happy moment. It was by far our favourite part of the day.�

Reception Styling
“Walking into our reception was a really magical moment. White candles sat on stacks of black painted books, wooden candle holders held black taper candles and small flower arrangements all sat on pink table runners. Each place setting included a different romantic quote written on a paper napkin ring. The favours were handmade brass ornaments, which also doubled as place cards. Matching handwritten signage was displayed in gold thrifted frames.�

“We were so proud of the handmade details we included - it made the whole day feel so special and personal. I did all of the calligraphy, folded the paper cranes for the ceremony backdrop and painted a globe for our guest book. Josh gets credit for the wooden candle holders and the signage we lettered ourselves. I also made the cake, and was so thrilled with how it turned out.”
EntertainingGuests
“We had an amazing band who played acoustic music during the ceremony and cocktail hour, and sets during the reception until the end of the night. As a surprise for Josh, I organised a whiskey bar for after dinner - it was such a hit with all the guests and really kept the mood going. It was one of our favourite parts of the night, and I don’t even drink whiskey!”
Best Advice
1. Your wedding day is about the two of you. Don’t do anything just because you’re supposed to - do what feels right for you and make it as personal and unique as possible. 2. You probably can’t have everything, so figure out what your priorities are and be willing to compromise on other things. For us, we knew that the photos would be one of the only things that would last forever, so we prioritised this in our budget. 3. Be as organised as possible, but don’t sweat the small stuff. I made endless lists to keep track of everything that was going on, but some things are just out of your control. On the day, the only thing you’ll really care about is that you get to marry the person you love.

get your dance on We talked to two experts with plenty of rhythm and fabulous tips, Anne Marie Dox, Director of Your First Dance Co, and the Baker Boys Band, to help get your plans for your first dance sorted!
finding 'the song' Anne Marie: Make sure you both love the lyrics, the beat or the artist. There’s usually not a connection if only one of you is familiar with the song. Baker Boys Band: The most important thing is that the song really means something to you. If you're worried people might think your choice is a little unorthodox, take a moment in your speeches to explain - people will enjoy learning more about your personality as a couple.
step it up Anne Marie: Dance lessons are a great idea so you don’t have to ‘wing it’ on the day - having to sway for four minutes is everyone’s greatest fear! Learning combination steps, if not a full dance, will help you feel more comfortable and make a great impression. A simple routine under two minutes can take 4-6 one hour lessons, and a more complex routine, approximately 10-12 lessons.
time to rehearse Anne Marie: Film each lesson so you can note your progress and see the good times, the laughs and connection between the two of you. Also, listen to your song whilst travelling to work - it will help you revise your past lessons.

perfect timing Baker Boys Band: The perfect first dance is one where the bride and groom are comfortable on the floor and enjoying themselves. If you have a band, you can ask them to shorten a longer song, or arrange with your DJ the moment you'd like it to end. It is also totally fine to ask your band to play the original recording by iPod, to ensure the timing is right for what you've rehearsed.
all together now Baker Boys Band: To transition, we invite the wedding party to the floor at the very end of the first dance. Then we’ll get things started with an upbeat song - a guaranteed dance floor filler that everybody knows, e.g. ‘Signed Sealed Delivered’. That gets everyone feeling the music immediately! Melissa and Grant’s lovely celebration makes the most of every moment starting with a wonderfully private ‘first look’ and photos in a pretty, leafy location, before being joined by their bridal party. They even found time for a quick drink at the local on the way to their ceremony. Way to stay calm, guys!
The Planning Experience “I’m a fairly organised person, but a bad time keeper, so I made a point of always being in front and feeling like I was in control. I loved all of our DIY projects and working together with my hubby and family. Dealing with contractors was okay as I do this as part of my day job, but I understand how some would see this as a daunting experience. Our focus was to keep on top of things so we could enjoy every bit of the journey (and avoid the stress!).”
Most Important “Making sure we stuck to a realistic budget, because financial stresses are not something anyone should have to worry about in the lead up to the big day. We were also both keen to ensure all of our family and friends felt special and included.”
"It really is such a big day that you just have to let go, be comfortable that you have done your best and enjoy every minute."
The Dress Search “Being a lover of vintage, the ‘Golden Age’ selection from Lisa Gowing was an easy fit for me. When my sister had the same reaction of, ‘Yep, that’s the one’, I knew I was making the right decision. The layering of the lace was just so delicate and eye catching, it has so much character.”
Bridesmaid Style “Early on, I decided I was looking for classic, floor length gowns and not only found dresses that I was happy with, but my maids were really comfortable in. Originally I was looking at a rustic pink, but my brother and Grant suggested dark blue - it complemented the suits and really allowed the bouquets to ‘pop’, which was what I was looking for. It was worth heeding the male fashionista advice!”
Reception Decor “I went for a vintage theme with some rustic and modern twists. Soft lighting illuminated the beautiful venue with its feature sandstone, and we added some complementing touches here and there, such as raw timber discs to tie in with the old hardwood timber floors. As the ceremony and reception were at the same venue, it was easy to carry the styling flow into both areas. We also saved on costs by moving flower arrangements inside after the ceremony.�

choosing the theme “It was a no-brainer to be honest, because I love the colours of autumn, trees and tall grass. When our photographer suggested a romantic picnic in Centennial Park I was up for it, because Alex and I haven't actually been on a picnic together in seven years of dating!”
the Shoot experience “It was really fun - everything was styled for us using edible props! We also exchanged emails to ensure what we were wearing complimented the shoot. We were a little camera shy at first but the results looked amazing. I turned the photos of the shoot into my guest book at the wedding!”
wedding planning “It’s definitely a very stressful, but rewarding experience. I do blame the modern platforms like Pinterest, Instagram and Facebook for injecting too many ideas in my head! It was an art filtering what I wanted and what was logical and practical for the day. Overall, I think with the right vendors, supportive family and friends and a keen eye for good detail, it’s definitely worth it as a once in a lifetime experience!”
best advice “An engagement shoot is definitely a great way to get to know your photographers – their personalities and style of shooting – and it’s surely a great opportunity to document a beautiful moment in your lives. We are surrounded by so many beautiful locations – so why not make good use of it!”
