lisa & nathen When the groom runs a cocktail bar and the theme is a modern twist on the 20’s, you know there’s going to be a party! Guests were entertained and pampered from start to finish at Lisa & Nathen’s beautiful riverside wedding.
wedding story "We decided on a long engagement so we could save and plan for the wedding without too much stress. (I am the stress head, Nathen is very cool, calm and collected). In a way it was a great decision but it also meant 18 months of wedding talk! For all of the elements, I researched then narrowed down my top picks before including Nathen in the final decision making. We were both totally involved in the whole process - I couldn't have done it without him!"
abundant Blooms Lisa loved having beautiful arrangements created for her day, “A floral arch had been top of the list from the very beginning, as were all the flowers. I wasn't willing to budge on this, so chose to invest more in this and forgo items like bonbonnieres.” Lisa’s vintage-style bouquet included David Austin & garden roses, Dahlias, Lisianthus & soft seasonal blooms. The boutonnieres were botanical clusters of buds, berries and foliage.
finding the dress Lisa found a spectacular gown without breaking her budget. “You don't have to spend a fortune on your dress. Nathen put it in perspective after I tried on an expensive gown. He worked out the price per hour of wear and it was just insane. My dress was probably the only item that came under budget, but it meant I could spend more on my shoes and other elements that meant a lot to us. It was important to me that the day wasn't about a dress so I wanted something simple. I couldn't be happier with what I chose.�
aisle experience “Our celebrant gave me the best advice of all, that my walk down the aisle was a walk worth thousands, so not to rush it and to take it all in. Everyone said I looked so confident and calm, so her advice really helped me to make the most of the moment."
most important Lisa and Nathen wanted to keep timing simple and make the most of the pretty, natural setting, “We kept our ceremony, reception and photos in the one location so we could be back in time to celebrate with our guests, and share the experience with those who have been part of our journey.�
the best Moments “My absolute favourite moment was standing next to Nathen just after I walked down the aisle to him and looking around at our guests together. I saw so much love in the faces of our family and friends and was totally overwhelmed - that was such an amazing feeling. Other highlights were seeing how proud our parents both were (especially my dad) and spending time with my new husband on a punt cruise just the two of us! We also managed to squeeze in some special time with our bridal party and their partners after photos finished. We opened some champagne and got to sit back and relax before heading into our reception.�
top tips 1. Look at the budget first and work back from there. It’s no good falling in love with a venue, then realising it’s going to break the bank to have the wedding there. 2. Decide what’s important. For us it was flowers, food, wine and venue. Cut out things that are not as important to you - it is after all a day about the two of you. 3. Choose a venue that reflects you as a couple. A big industrial space might be perfect for some people, but if it’s not you it’s going to be a massive challenge trying to style it. 4. Look after your guests. Umbrellas for if it’s hot and water to keep them hydrated. Don't make them wait hours for you to return from photos - they are there to celebrate with you so try to keep photos close by. 5. Get more photos with your mum. Mums are often busy hosting and as you are too, your paths don't cross nearly enough. My mum looked so beautiful but we had hardly any photos together.

entertaining guests Making sure guests were well taken care of was a priority, “We had gorgeous vintage drink dispensers set up outside, where guests could listen to a harpist and have canapĂŠs while we were away for photos. The wonderful people from Punt Tours then took our family and friends for rides."
the reception "The Terrace was a bit of a blank canvas, so we chose to change the layout of the room to have the beautiful gardens and river as the backdrop for the bridal table. There is a fantastic skylight in the centre of the room and a tree in the middle of that which is a beautiful feature."
creating atmosphere “Food, wine, service and beautiful surroundings were the essential things we wanted to highlight – we had incredible suppliers and would highly recommend all of them. Top Dog Entertainment did an amazing job with music for the evening, from background jazz during dinner to a great song list for the dance floor. We wanted our guests to feel like they were a really special part of our wedding and marriage." glow on your wedding day with melody falcinella
Keshia & Marinko It started on a Swiss mountain top with a ring and romantic picnic for two‌Keshia and Marinko’s vintage inspired wedding features an abundance of old world glamour, soft pink and mint palette and fresh ideas for a beautiful reception.
Designing the Dress Keshia combined vintage and modern fabrics to create her gorgeous gown. “I found a quirky dress on Etsy made from recycled vintage dresses, and in the end decided to just keep the outer skirt. I called in the help of a friend, Simmone, and we went fabric shopping and chose the materials together. She came up with a design that would suit me and the champagne, vintage glamour look I was going for. She had to hand sew the entire dress due to the beading detail, so it was only ready the day before the wedding! I was very impressed with her effort and the outcome was amazing. On the day I was able to remove the outer skirt after the ceremony and just wear the slim fitting dress for the reception. This was especially handy as the temperature was over 40 degrees!�
Bouquet Recipe A fresh and feminine mix of dahlias, peonies, snapdragons, baby's breath and other pink and white varieties.
The Ceremony “The ceremony was in the beautiful outdoor garden. The aisle was lined with herb bouquets in jars hung on shepherd's hooks. Guest comfort in the heat was a priority, so we had large white umbrellas for shade, lace handheld fans and a vintage refreshment stand with iced tea and fruit infused water. Styling included a large chalkboard sign with timetable of events, white doily lace bunting above the altar and a vintage signing table.�
Best Advice 1. Don't stress the small details. 2. Book everything well in advance. 3. Be flexible and open to new ideas if it might save you money.
Planning Experience Being well organised and booking 12-18 months in advance helped everything run smoothly. “I did nearly 100% of the planning as Marinko didn't have much interest in the details, which was easier for me as I got to create my dream wedding! I also have a lot of creative friends, and I’m a graphic designer so I made the invitations and stationery myself. I’ve created my own side business specialising in wedding stationery as I loved it so much!
The Reception “Our reception was in an outdoor marquee. Table centrepieces were vintage brass vases in different shapes and sizes which I’d collected with my mum and filled with pink and white flowers. Table runners were light pink chiffon over custom made table covers of white lace. We also used a vintage dresser laid with white doilies as the cake stand and glass bottles for a 'message in a bottle' guest book. We had a DIY stand for guests to wrap the table flowers to take home and a ladder with framed photos of my family's weddings, which spanned five generations. A vintage kissing booth was used as an outdoor photo booth prop and bonbonniere were various potted herbs.”
Making an Entrance “My favourite parts of the night were the entrance dances of the bridal party. Each couple chose a special or funny song to them and did a little dance as they entered the reception."
First Dance "For our first dance, we spent a few months learning a choreographed routine to Frank Sinatra's Fly Me to the Moon, played by the band. Performing it was a special moment for us and a bit of a surprise to some of the guests!�

Megan & Shane After a candlelit proposal in the home they had built together, Megan and Shane planned a rustic, country celebration with a romantic woodland feel. Capturing the special moments, including their pets and creating a day they both loved were the priorities for this gorgeous couple.
the proposal “After six and a half years together full of fun and travel, Shane asked the question in our beautiful home which he had decorated with candles, rose petals and balloons hanging with photos. The moment I opened the door he had ‘A Thousand Years’ playing and a movie about our life so far. Then we went out to dinner in a limo - it was the perfect night.”
the experience “I enjoyed looking through photos and videos while searching for our perfect vendor and really enjoyed meeting them all! I also had fun looking on Pinterest for ideas, however I think that added to my stress and overthinking - I constantly doubted myself and struggled with deciding on the minor details.” Megan's advice if things get tough? “Relax and try to enjoy the planning - you will get through the checklist one tick at a time and actually miss it once it's over!”
most important “Photos and video to start with! And having my dogs with us and cared for on the day. Flowers and styling became more and more important the further I went along.”
the highlights “The morning with my favourite ladies, my dad and stepdad; when I had a bit of an emotional breakdown and Mum was right by my side to clear my tears; the moment I saw my puppy, Harley with her sign and flowers around her neck; walking down the aisle with my dad; the photos at Darlington; photo booth fun; the sparkler tunnel and watching everyone dancing. Also, kissing my husband for the first time!”
including pets “If you want your fur babies with you - do it! Some thought it would be too hard or they would be naughty - it was definitely worth it for me and my husband. Plus, our pet carers were amazing! Basically, follow your heart and do the things that matter most to you. It’s your one and only wedding day and it should be a reflection of you and your partner – don’t let others persuade you out of anything so you have no regrets.”
choosing the gown “I felt beautiful in every dress I put on! I went to three shops with my mum, nana, sisters and cousin and had a great experience. In the final shop they were having a designer day, where the dresses were only in the store for a day and then off around the world. It was possible the dress would never go into production! I guess I knew the moment I saw the five reactions of my loved ones. They all 100% agreed that it was The One!�
styling concept “I wanted it to be pretty but also rustic, with a bit of country! My partner loves wood and I love ink, so we wanted to incorporate both into our wedding in a tasteful way. We also wanted a romantic, vintage feel to the day. Our stylist had so many beautiful options that fit our theme perfectly.”
diy details “I work for my dad’s printing company, so I designed, printed and put together our invites, favour jars, programs, seating charts and menus! My husband made quite a few of the wooden signs, including the wooden boxes for our centrepieces. We also purchased the lolly jars and candy and had our stylist create the display.”
personalising the day “I think our day was full of love and respect - it showed that we put equal effort into our life, and work together as a team to achieve our goals. It showed how much we love our fur children, that we like to have a laugh, that we will never forget the ones we love and that we appreciate nature and its beauty.�
best advice 1. Make a list of important photos you want to capture. I did this and still on the day I totally forgot certain people I wanted photos with. In saying that, there is only so much time so you really need to prioritise. 2. Don't overthink everything! Detail is important but there were many things I spent a lot of energy on which were really just background extras. 3. Get a videographer and photographer. The day goes so quickly - everyone will tell you that! But you will miss the amazing details you spent time fussing over. Seeing the boys getting ready and your guests arriving, the speeches and your vows - the video and photos will capture it all.

Lauren & Ryan Love literally came knocking for Lauren and Ryan when he made a delivery to her door! Fast forward to their beautiful New Zealand wedding, where every detail has a story and the groom serenades his bride down the aisle.
Getting Started
“We were pretty organised and started the planning quite early to chip away at our ‘to do’ list one thing at a time. We started by getting quotes for everything so we could approach our parents with a budget that was researched and realistic. The guest list was difficult - it’s hard to balance old and new friends, and extended families too.”
Searching for the Dress
“I had a fair idea about what style of dress would suit me so I trawled the boutiques trying to find ‘The One’. I found lots of beautiful dresses and many had different elements that I loved, but nothing felt quite right. In the end I decided to combine these ideas into one dress and my dressmaker, Renee made it a reality. At my first consultation she pulled out a piece of the exact kind of lace I was looking for and there was just enough left for one dress – I took it as a sign and paid my deposit on the spot! Renee is supremely talented and I was so happy with how it turned out.”
Something Old
"My grandfather was an avid stamp collector and when he passed away last year, my parents gave us some of his collection to use on our invitations. We spent an evening going through them all and had fun choosing which stamps to use for each invitation.”
Do it Yourself
“We made envelope liners for our invitations using gold wrapping paper. It was time-consuming but looked great and saved a lot of money compared to buying the envelopes pre-lined.”
Sweet Serenade
“Ryan played the guitar and sang Jason Mraz’s 'I’m Yours' as I walked down the aisle to him which was incredible and nearly spoiled my makeup! Apparently it’s a very Irish thing to do so it also fitted in with our family heritage."
Ceremony Style “We got married in a beautiful white wooden church and the interior was so pretty it really didn’t need much styling at all. We added a few ivory ribbons to the end of the pews and that was all it needed!"
Moment Captured “If you can afford it, invest in a videographer. We made an extremely last minute decision to do this and having a DVD of the day for guests who couldn’t be there and for our future kids is pretty special. "
A Special Addition
“Ryan’s beloved Nan used to grow dahlias and they are his favourite flower. My mum managed to find a new variety of dahlia called Café au Lait that matched the champagnecoloured silk lining of my dress and Ryan planted some bulbs at home in a big copper tub. Come January they were in full bloom and Jess, our florist put one in my bouquet as the focal point. It felt pretty romantic telling my friends and family that Ryan grew me flowers for my wedding day bouquet!”
Top Tips
1. Involve your fiancÊ in the planning, do some things together and distribute the work load according to your strengths! We designed our wedding website, invitations and menus together. 2. Pick one or two things that are really important to you and spend your money on those. We wanted to have stunning memories of our day so investing in our photographer was one of the best things we could have done as we are incredibly happy with the results. We also wanted beautiful flowers to set the scene at the reception. We splurged on a seven metre long garland for our head table, and it was so beautiful, it was money well spent. 3. Most of all, enjoy the planning and if you’re getting a bit overwhelmed just remember that it’s supposed to be fun!
Cruising the Countryside
"Getting away for photos with the bridal party was a highlight. It was great to be able to have a glass of champagne with some of our best friends immediately after we got married and to cruise around the beautiful countryside together in vintage Hudson Limousines."
Personal Touches
“Our wedding was very ‘us’ as it combined elements of tradition with a great party which are both things we love. We wanted to have a wedding that people looked back on and remembered for its fun and easiness, so we chose a band that would get the dance floor rocking and put on buses for everyone both to and from the venue. No one had to drive or worry about directions and it made for a brilliant night.”
The Reception
“We kept our styling at the Red Barn understated and elegant because we wanted the venue and surrounding country views to speak for themselves. We focused on fresh flowers with lots of candles in mercury glass holders and cream draping looped through the ceiling battens. There was a remembrance table which had photos of our families’ wedding days, our guest book and a vintage suitcase for cards with a gold glitter sign that I made."

Sophie & Luke There’s something special about getting married on your family’s country property, creating your own beautiful garden as a backdrop for your vows and riding pushbikes with your dad to the ceremony! This is Sophie and Luke’s relaxed vintage wedding.
paving the way Luke chose a unique and lasting way to propose! “We met through mutual friends in 2008 and spent a very happy 5 years together before Luke proposed on our five year anniversary. He arranged to have a paver placed in a new path at South Durras (where I spent my holidays growing up) which was asking me to marry him - a huge surprise to say the least!�
Finding the dress The brief was for pretty and comfortable, “I was pregnant while looking for my wedding dress initially, so I spent a lot of time online browsing photos and designers. Once I gave birth to my daughter, I went to some bridal stores but just knew I wasn't going to find my style there. The online search began again and I found my Grace Loves Lace dress which I immediately fell in love with. The stretchy fabric meant I was able to buy it straight away without any concerns regarding size - big relief once I found it!�
Ceremony styling Eclectic, handmade and found treasures made the styling their own, “The wedding ceremony was styled with mismatched chairs we picked up from various second hand shops and benches we made, old ladders and boxes from around the family property, hessian bunting, jars (decorated by me and my family) filled with cottage flowers and rose petals for down the aisle. We also included photos of our parents’ and sisters’ weddings and had gold tissue paper confetti for our walk back up the aisle."
making the day “Our wedding was perfectly organised, thanks to Luke! Everything went smoothly and was so relaxed. We felt like it was just a day full of love and happy vibes spent with the people we love the most.�
“The ceremony space - it started with just ferns and trees ‌ we were able to create a beautiful garden in what felt like the middle of the bush."
helping hands Family and friends were all included in the planning and DIY, “It was really fun to get them involved so they could feel a part of the process too - they did so much from helping make the garden and food for us to eat throughout the day, to transporting things back and forth between the ceremony and reception locations.�
favourite experiences “The ceremony was really special and seeing each other for the first time was breathtaking for us both. Having our daughter there with us was very precious as well. We had such a fun night in the photo booth and on the dance floor too!"
Reception decor "The reception was styled reusing the flower jars from the ceremony for the tables, with small candles, kraft brown paper menus and place cards. We made a seating chart from old frames on hessian with ribbon and twine.�
Capturing moments “Anthea and Lyndon were the perfect duo to capture our day! They were so great at relaxing everyone and taking really natural and happy shots.�
words of wisdom 1. Spend lots of time browsing the internet for inspiration and ideas so you have a good idea of what you want when the time comes to making decisions. 2. Try to be organised in advance so the days leading up to the wedding aren't spent stressing out! 3. If anything goes wrong and there is no time to fix it, just let it go! No one else knows how it was supposed to be.

3. bulk buy After you have decided on the final look, purchase everything in bulk. Why? It’s more cost effective, product may become unavailable and colour variations can occur in different batches of same product type.
4. time it out Will enjoyment outweigh the time you will need to spend? If it’s going to take you 40 hours but you know you’ll have fun, then it’s worth doing! No DIY project should make you wish for death by paper cut.

Shortcutting is not cheating! Where you can make your life easier and your project simpler - do.
Ah, the math no one enjoys – how much will multiple cost? If you're happy with the look but it's working out way too expensive, consider what makes the most impact in your design – there'll always be something you can substitute.
7. more is more When it comes to materials, that is! Always purchase more than you need – some experimentation (and the occasional error) is inevitable. Investing in that extra 10% makes it easy to start again without worrying about running out of supplies.
8. get equipped Make your job easier by working with good quality tools (a guillotine is a godsend for papercraft!) and be resourceful if it’s unlikely you’ll use them again – does a relative or friend have what you need?
9. tag team Outsourcing is not failing – sometimes projects just don’t work out or you need a little extra help, so chalk it up to experience and call in the experts!
10. cover up No mistake is the end of the world! Take a step back and think about things objectively – most things can be fixed with an extra embellishment. Just remember, it’s called D.I.Y. (Do It Yourself) not D.I.P. (Do It Perfectly)!
