Changemakers: Historical & Present W&J College has emerged as a leading institution for producing ethical, well-rounded, informed leaders. Our storied history is full of changemakers, ranging from senators and congress members to CEOs and chairpersons to astronauts and hall-of-fame athletes, including an NFL commissioner.

Janet Bawell was the first female to register as a W&J student after the college became co-ed in 1970.
Founded in 1781, before the end of the American Civil War, W&J College originated in three log cabin colleges established by John McMillan, Thaddeus Dod and Joseph Smith, graduates of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton). Eventually, the three schools evolved into two academies - Washington Academy, later Washington College, and Canonsburg Academy, later Jefferson College. In 1865, the two colleges unified, establishing Washington & Jefferson College.
Jesse William Lazear, an 1888 graduate, was a physician and scientist who studied the bacteriology of tropical diseases, including yellow fever. His groundbreaking discovery, for which he made the ultimate

Meghan Dryburgh ’25 has found success on and off the court during her time at W&J College. The reigning Presidents’ Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Year, she has turned heads among the nation’s best. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, native was named to the 2023 WBCA NCAA Division III Coaches’ All-America Team. Through two collegiate seasons, Dryburgh has totaled 604 points in 55 games. Shining on the court and in the classroom, studying Biology, Dryburgh has made the PAC Academic Honor Roll twice and saw herself honored on the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team. As one of nine United States student-athletes, Dryburgh traveled to Brazil in 2023, representing W&J as she competed on the Division III Team USA Women’s Basketball team.

Teams & Intramurals Tyler Horvat ‘23 made his mark equally on the baseball diamond and in the classroom. Horvat became the first player in W&J College baseball history to earn All-America honors in three different seasons, while being the first-ever President to be named a First Team All-American. W&J competed in the national playoffs three times during Horvat’s tenure. He holds multiple single-season and career school records. You & Your Network Dr. Lindsey Zubritsky ‘10, M.D., FAAD, is grateful for the influence that W&J College had on her, and through social media, she is having quite the influence on others.

Dr. Zubritsky, a board-certified dermatologist specializing in general medical, surgical, cosmetics, and pediatric dermatology, became a social media influencer on TikTok and Instagram with the username @dermguru, amassing a combined following of over one million users. When asked what advice she has for current students, Dr. Zubritsky stressed capitalizing on W&J’s many opportunities. “Take advantage of all the unique opportunities that W&J provides,” she said. “To be successful in different professions (like social media and medicine), you must be multi-faceted and wellrounded with a diverse set of life experiences
