2 The Chamber Connection

From Chamber President John Redman President, Union Square Group LTD

I am excited and humbled to begin my tenure as President of the Warwick Valley Chamber of Commerce. First let me wish each and every one of you, your families and employees the very best for the Holiday Season and for a prosperous New Year. As I start this journey, I am grateful for and dependent upon an energetic Executive Board with First VP Jim Mezzetti, Second VP Wayne Patterson, Secretary Kim Starks and Mary McClurg as Treasurer.

The example set by Mechelle Casciotta’s leadership over the past two years is both a beacon and a challenge—the beacon of example and the challenge to match her enthusiasm, wisdom and hard work at serving your Chamber. Yes, it’s YOUR chamber and we all need to keep that in mind as we enter a new year and engage with our own clients and customers, but also engage with one another in the multitude of Chamber activities, online inter-activity, and opportunities to explore the potential of business-to-business growth for our own enterprises. One particular goal of mine for the coming year is member retention. Growth in membership is always a goal, and Executive Director Michael Johndrow continues to excel in that endeavor, but I would like each member to consider the benefits that Chamber membership has brought and how those will continue to be important in the coming year. Of course there is always room for improvement, so if you have suggestions or even a complaint, don’t hesitate to reach out. And we can never offer enough gratitude and appreciation for the incredible work of Sarah Armand and Bea Arner, whose support and efficiency in the Caboose and in the larger community continually make this Chamber function so well.

From the Caboose by Executive Director Michael Johndrow

Our Chamber is now in its seventy-ninth year of existence and I have had the distinct pleasure of serving as its Executive Director for over ten of those years. It is officially time for all of us to get used to dating our missives ‘2018’.

Warwick Valley had a very successful 2017. Due to increasing tourism and shopping local, it would seem that we have managed to emphasize, in a very strategic way, just how much people value their experiences with consistently good service and quality products. Just a little side note: Our Applefest website had 67,000 hits during the month of September alone!

Looking back at this year, we can be proud of our innovative promotions. Our Community Showcase in May was moved from the WV Middle School to Main Street Warwick. Both vendors and merchants were very happy with the results! Applefest had a strong attendance with the assistance of a perfect weather day. The Annual Dinner was once again a resounding success with its Trivia Challenge, hosted by our own Michael Sweeton!

The Chamber office, located on South Street in the little red Caboose, has outgrown its space. We are investigating several options: a larger venue, preferably within the main downtown area; an additional railroad car; or some kind of addition. We welcome any ideas, so please call us at 986-2720. We are preparing for and looking forward to a prosperous new year. Sarah, Bea and I wish to thank you for your continuing support – it means a lot! Please remember that you, as loyal members, are our priority, and we will be working to promote you and your business in 2018.

Cyber Crime is a Real Financial Threat

by Tina M. Buck, KeyBank Manager, Warwick Branch, 845-610-6515

On average, U.S. companies lose $15.4 million per year to cyber-crime. The starting point for most of these attacks is email, which is how most businesses communicate. While no one can predict every form of cyber-crime and fraud, every company can protect itself by training employees in ways to safeguard sensitive data and protect corporate resources. Here are some quick tips.

• • • • •

When in doubt, delete. Avoid unfamiliar links from unknown sources. Keep passwords strong—and secret. Stay suspicious. Keep software updated.

One-time training is not enough. Smart policies and consistent employee training can help your business stay a step ahead of the perpetrators.

Are Antivirus Programs and Apps Enough?

Is antivirus enough to protect your personal and business information? This is a question we should all be asking ourselves—often. In today’s world with all of the very public hacks reported in the news, we all need to wonder how safe our personal business information actually is. What worked in the past is not good enough in today’s world. Today we have Surveillance Cameras, Smart TVs, Thermostats, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Smart Lights, Speakers and Home Theaters that can potentially leave you exposed. Intelligent Automation, LLC would like to offer Chamber members a free security assessment for their home and/or business. Contact Intelligent Automation, LLC (888) 711-4521 for more information and to schedule your free security assessment.

Chamber New Member Luncheons

by Sherry Bukovcan, Mary Kay Cosmetics, New Membership Chairperson

Our October/November New Members Luncheon was hosted by Charlotte’s Tea Room in Warwick, NY. Situated in a beautiful and impeccably-decorated Victorian house just steps from the village, the Tea Room is a unique and inviting place to have lunch, meet with friends, and relax. The menu items are seasonal and delicious, the staff is warm and knowledgeable, and the atmosphere is charming. The up-the-stairs room is perfectly set up for any type of party for children and adults. You can find this local gem at 15 Oakland Avenue. In December, we were graciously welcomed by the Hickory Hill Golf Course/Hickory Hill Catering, located at 25 County Park Lane in Warwick. Picturesque and rich in amenities, we loved their spacious banquet room and catering services. Although the golf season is over, their catering for parties and special occasions is all year round. The course is home to a practice green, driving range, pro shop, and an onsite restaurant/concession area. Hickory Hill Golf Course offers lessons, outing packages, and weeknight leagues. We thank both establishments for their warmth and hospitality! Dear Chamber Members, This is my last report of the New Members’ Luncheon. My husband and I are moving to New Hampshire to be closer to our son and his family. It was my honor to serve our Chamber for 10 years as a member, board member, executive board, and past president. Through this journey I gained many friends. Thanks to our vibrant chamber, its activities, and many clients. We are fortunate to have such a friendly and active Chamber to help with our businesses. The Chamber has created an atmosphere to meet, and have fun at the same time. Although I am leaving Warwick, this beautiful and friendly town will always be my hometown. To all, my wish for you is a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. Warmest regards, Sherry Bukovcan

Joining Jacob Tuckfelt and Valerie Zammitt are Tracy Garay and Jillian Kezek.

Let South Street Auto and Tire make sure you have a true all-season tire for the safest driving year-round. Don’t let new tax rules cause you audit agony. Is your business a limited liability company or partnership with two or more members/partners? Do you file a partnership return? If you answered yes to these questions, it is time to consult attorney Deborah A. Young. For tax years starting after December 31, 2017, partnership tax returns will be audited using new rules that may negatively impact your business and its owners. To avoid negative tax consequences, your operating agreement must be amended. Designations of a “tax matter partner” also need changing. Call (845) 986-5036 for advice. For more information send an email to dyoungesq@gmail.com or visit www.deborahayoungesq.com.
