Eleventh Annual Community Showcase

The Community Showcase, now in it’s 11th year, will be taking place on Saturday, May 5th from 10am to 4pm with a rain date of Sunday the 6th. Due to the level of success had with last year’s “Be Local, Buy Local” event, we’re excited to announce that we will continue to utilize the Village of Warwick as the backdrop for this openair festival. This showcase is great for both store-front and home-based businesses, providing a vibrant celebration of local products and services, as well as networking opportunities for participants, while benefiting from the natural flow of visitors that visit the downtown. Participating businesses will line Railroad Avenue and Main Street, making face-to-face contact with potential customers while marketing and selling their products and services. …continued on page 2

Gather Friends for 2018 Operation Clean Sweep

Grab a bag and clean your street! Every year, Operation Clean Sweep encourages all community members to help beautify our area and clean up roadsides and parks throughout the entire Town of Warwick. Unlike the past, this year’s Operation Clean Sweep will continue throughout the week, beginning on Earth Day, April 22 and ending on Sunday, April 29. This Chamber sponsored event, headed by WVCC Board Members Jean Beattie and Ryan Hansen with the help of local Warwick Valley High School student Julia Vargas, invites all individuals, organizations, clubs and families to stop by the Caboose to register your road. Pick up free garbage bags and gloves, provided by ShopRite of Warwick, Price Chopper and St. Anthony Community Hospital. Remember to leave filled bags at the corner of intersections to be picked up by the Town of Warwick Department of Public Works on Monday, April 30 and Tuesday, May 1st.

In conjunction with Operation Clean Sweep, we’re excited to announce our “Photo Share Contest”! Get your group together and take a picture with the bags of trash you’ve collected, then upload it to Instagram with the tag #OperationCS2018. A winner will be selected at random to receive a Local Business Basket, courtesy of the

2 The Chamber Connection

From Chamber President John Redman President, Union Square Group LTD

After three consecutive months of our Board of Directors’ meetings being postponed a week because of terrible weather, (a record in itself), we are looking toward spring which can’t get here soon enough. Special thanks to all the Board members who re-arranged their schedules for those juggled meeting dates and a real shout-out too, to the parents and caregivers whose own schedules get slammed by those school snow days.

Spring will bring with it two of our annual initiatives, Operation Clean Sweep April 22-29, and our Community Showcase held on Saturday May 5 on Main Street and Railroad Avenue. We had nearly 100 vendors and exhibitors at last year’s first shot at this outdoor downtown event and already we are getting new inquiries as well as those from last year’s exhibitors, so get your booth space reservations in as soon as you can. As always, Sarah and Bea will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

As I mentioned in last quarter’s Chamber Connection, with a real push on for member retention, we need everyone to step up on renewing for this year and to encourage others you may know to be sure that their renewals are in as well. Along with Michael Johndrow’s valiant continuing efforts at enlisting new members, we will continue as the benchmark for “smaller” Chambers in the area. Thanks again for everything you do and let’s welcome warmer springtime weather.

Our Chamber’s Eventful 2018 First Quarter

St. Anthony Community Hospital Now Offers “Gentle Cesarean Section” Option to Mothers

St. Anthony Community Hospital, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth), has announced it will offer a new birth routine known as a gentle C-section, or family-centered section, to mothers who require the procedure. A gentle C-section mimics some of the essential components of natural childbirth by allowing the parents to watch their infant enter the world through a clear drape and encourages skin-to-skin bonding with the newborn while still in the operating room. This new process enhances the surgical experience by allowing the mother to be more part of the birth than a traditional C-section allows. “A lot of mothers are disappointed if they are told they require a C-section, said Diane DeFreest, RN, Maternity Director, St. Anthony Community Hospital. “They might feel as if they had missed out on a vital moment in their pregnancy experience by requiring a C-section. We are aiming to make this procedure feel more like a birth and less like a surgery.” St. Anthony Community Hospital is the only hospital in both Orange and Rockland counties to offer gentle C-sections to its patients. To find out more information about the Kennedy Birthing Center, visit: http://www.stanthonycommunityhosp.org/ birthingcenter or to see if this process is right for you, consult your obstetrician.

Health Saving Accounts: Cost Effective Health Care Solution for Your Employees Best of Houzz for 2018 by Tina M. Buck, KeyBank Manager, Warwick Branch, 845-610-6515

A survey conducted by HR consultant Mercer found 46% of employers are reducing HR benefit costs by offering employees High-Deductible Health Plans. By 2019, 72% of employers are expected to offer HDHPs. HighDeductible Health Plans lower costs by not paying the first several thousand dollars of health care expenses (higher deductibles), but will normally cover remaining costs. A Health Savings Account is a cost-effective way to add to your employee benefits package. HSAs can be opened by employees to make tax-advantaged contributions that are then withdrawn tax-free, for qualified current and future health care expenses not covered by insurance. Learn more. Simplified Exemption

If you’re a member of a Home Owner Association (HOA), then you may already consider yourself to be a little different than other “ordinary” property owners; but you may not realize just how special you really are. HOAs in NY are typically organized as nonprofit corporations under the NYS Not-for-Profit Corporation Law, and as such, may qualify to seek an exemption from certain taxes. However, under Federal law, the Internal Revenue Code includes special provisions for HOAs to simplify the process of seeking exemption from certain income taxes. Contact Jeremy L. Havens, Esq. at (845) 987-8500 or Jeremy@HavensLaw.net.

Professional Home Buying Advice You Must Know

Spring has arrived, and with it, an eager crowd of consumers who are scouring real estate websites with the intent of buying and selling homes. Before shopping and selling begins, there is a crucial step that must be taken: obtaining an accurate home value. Real estate websites offer home value calculators, but due to several factors, these are often inaccurate by 8%, which doesn’t sound like a lot – until you translate that into dollars! Avoid making the costly error of an incorrect home value by calling Michael Hodge of Berkshire Hathaway Gross & Jansen Realtors for a free, no-obligation Home Value Estimate at (845) 238-0996.

Keeping with the philosophy of “from our family to yours,” Seely & Durland Insurance has countless clients who have been with them for many years, including several second and third generation families and businesses. John has since insured every one of his vehicles and homes with SDI.
