2 The Chamber Connection

From the Chamber President Mechelle Casciotta Owner of Kitchen & Bath Works and Warwick Valley Appliances

As we close out 2016, please join me in giving thanks to the different cogs in the wheel that help the Chamber run so effectively. First, thanks to Michael Johndrow for his support not only to Chamber but to our beloved town. He challenges us by using innovative leadership with bottomless enthusiasm and effective use of diplomacy.

Next are the irreplaceable Sarah Armand and the gifted organizer Bea Arner. We are thankful for the time and effort that you both give, not just to Chamber but individually to each one of us.

To Mayor Michael Newhard, Town Supervisor Michael Sweeton and Lt. John Rader; their combined leadership, teamwork and support consistently and positively impact the safety and well-being of our village and town in many ways. This is why people desire to move here and why those already here continue to love it. To my 2016 executive board: John Redmond, the bottomless giving of your talents, input and advice is immeasurable. Wayne Patterson, your lovable-ness, kindness and unlimited; hugs are infectious; Mary McClurg, your support, good nature and service are above none other and Susan Ronga, your skills, resources and willingness to always lend a helping hand are invaluable. I look forward to working with the new executive board of: John Redmond; James Mezzetti; Mary McClurg and Kimberly Starks. Lastly, on a different note, I would like to offer a call to all of us as leaders and business owners in our community to rise above the negativity, cynicism, rancor and divisiveness that are still gripping us a nation. I propose that we challenge ourselves individually to make a difference within our own community to move forward as positively as possible. Ask yourself what will you do to support your fellow man even though you may not see eye to eye on certain issues. Perhaps we can give the gift of empathy at least outwardly. I believe our humanity depends on it. Cheers to 2017!

Record Keeping Matters

After practicing law for more than 25 years, Deborah A Young, Esq. is still surprised to learn that business owners are not following really important recordkeeping practices. There are some very simple steps you need to take to avoid personal liability for your business activities. These same simple steps will also help position your business for a successful transition to new owners and could avert panic if a regulator or tax official comes calling. Maintaining your corporate or LLC record books does matter. Take the time; get peace of mind. www.deborahyoungesq.com

From the Caboose by Executive Director Michael Johndrow

Hello all from our Chamber “headquarters” here on South Street! As is always the case, we are busy, busy, busy in our ongoing efforts to promote all of your businesses, along with this area, for economic growth. We are proud of all of you, and continue to encourage our entire community to shop local.

We have an advantage – our proximity to NYC enables us to extend that exposure to all five boroughs to visit us for a day or a weekend. Our tourists are never disappointed! As part of our new member orientation (a most valuable benefit), the WVCC should be both seen and utilized as a public relations firm – our events are designed to enhance your networking opportunities. Don’t forget that face to face connections are a valuable form of advertising. Just focus on selling yourself as a good person to do business with, and word then spreads. If you are unable to attend, send an employee to do so in your stead – the results will prove well worth while!

Use membership in our Chamber as a credential – after all, belonging means you are committed to your business, that you are successful enough to make the effort, and that ultimately you are proud of what you have created. On behalf of all of us here at the Caboose: Sarah, Bea and myself, I wish you all prosperity and good health in the coming year. And as always, Thank You!

Chamber New Member Luncheons

by Sherry Bukovcan, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Chairperson

Our October luncheon was hosted by Chef Michael, owner of Landmark Inn. The Landmark Inn, a Warwick mainstay, has been in operation for more than 50 years. Chef Michael DiMartino is a Culinary Institute of America graduate and brings over 25 years of restaurant experience to this distinctive and historic restaurant. He uses the freshest local ingredients in his dishes, with innovative flavor combinations. Everything is prepared and presented to perfection. You can choose to dine in the casual and cozy bar area, or reserve a table in the main dining room surrounded by artifacts representing the building’s more than 200-year history. Private rooms are also available for special events.

We had our November luncheon at Drunken Cherry restaurant. The Drunken Cherry is a relatively newcomer to Warwick, and we are thrilled to have them as a part of our community! The owner Susan Gregory and her son Justin have opened a new location at 172 Route 94 South after winning first place in the fine dining category at St. Stephen’s 10th annual Taste of the Town. Though best known for their unique and delicious homemade cookies, their seasonal menu is creative and varied, with everything made from scratch. The marketplace, attached to the restaurant, has some of Susan’s gift baskets on display as well as sandwiches, salads, and more—all available for pickup anytime. The Drunken Cherry restaurant is available for showers, parties, wine pairing dinners, and celebrations. They also offer off-premises catering. The Warwick Valley Chamber of Commerce gratefully appreciates the generosity of these establishments.

New Year, New Beginning

Did you know that 47% of Americans make New Year’s resolutions but only 8% achieve them? What is the #1 resolution? You guessed it. Lose weight. If you just say, “I’m going to lose weight in 2017, you’ll most likely be in that 92% that fail. People who make specific resolutions are ten times more likely to achieve them. This is where Susan Lynch, www. slynch.myshaklee.com, (845) 987-4590, can help you make a specific goal, give support every step of the way, and offer healthy choices/products to make the journey easier. What do you say? Journey with Susan Lynch to be healthy!

Many make at least one New Year’s resolution, often for improved physical health. While it’s important to maintain a good diet and exercise throughout the year, many resolve to make these efforts “in the coming year”. Similar consideration applies to financial health. Veteran independent Financial Advisor Ed Lynch recommends an annual review of one’s personal goals and financial plan, to avoid a mismatch. A former Army officer and father of two college-aged children, Lynch says, “At times, life can seem to be a battle between competing priorities, yet a solid financial plan keeps you on Edward M. Lynch track!” For a no obligation consultation, contact Lynch at (845) 294-3456; edward.lynch@raymondjames.com; (Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. FINRA/SIPC)

Three Business Growth Myths Busted

by Tina M. Buck, KeyBank Manager, Warwick Branch, 845 610-6515

Don’t think you can’t grow your business. By separating fact from fiction, you can take advantage of growth opportunities. For example; Myth: “My business has outgrown SBA loans.” Reality: SBA loans can go up to $12 million.

Myth: “My company’s assets can’t help me secure financing.” Reality: Receivables are just as valuable as inventory, equipment, owned facilities and other tangible assets. Myth: “I don’t have time, money or patience to automate my accounts payable process.” Reality: Manually processing an invoice from receipt to payment can cost as much as $20, versus $4 for automated processing in high-volume businesses.
