2 The Chamber Connection

Letter from the Chamber President

by Mechelle Casciotta, Kitchen & Bath Works; Warwick Valley Appliances

Hard to believe we are heading into 2016! First, a big thank you goes out to last year’s Executive Board members Doug Stage, Jeff Reilly, Deb Giuliani, Wayne Patterson, Susan Ronga and Sherry Bukovcan for their fine work. Of course I am excited to be working alongside this year’s executive team consisting of Wayne, Susan, Doug and Mary McClurg.

As most of you know I am co-owner of Kitchen & Bath Works and Warwick Valley Appliances. However, you may not know that I’ve been an active member in Warwick Valley Rotary for nine years, served on the June Tent Party HospitalRotary board in previous years, and this will be my seventh year on the Board of Directors for our Chamber. It is an honor for the Chamber to serve the Warwick Valley business community. Through business development, community development, and membership services, the Warwick Valley Chamber of Commerce serves as the primary business and community leader in Warwick Valley. The WVCC is also unique in that we are the only local organization whose mission is to further bolster Warwick Valley as one of the premier places in which to live and do business. If you are a visitor to the community, we encourage you to patronize the businesses which have helped strengthen and serve our community in multiple ways as participating members of the Chamber.

We take a pointed interest in the success of our local businesses; we care if folks are dining in our restaurants, customers are making purchases in our retail stores, and clients are seeking assistance from our professional services. It is the Chamber’s number one priority to ensure that both residents and out-of-town customers are taking advantage of the wide number of services our businesses have to offer. Anyone who knows me knows that I’ve been a longtime advocate of “keeping it local”. In addition, I’ve been involved in community participation for school and other local activities. Kitchen & Bath Works and Warwick Valley Appliances have donated $10,000+ to our local schools and community fundraisers since opening our doors ten years ago.

The Warwick Valley Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to ensuring our town continues to be a premier place in which to live and do business. My main objective as President is to continue this plan of action by focusing our efforts on the following: • Building a Strong Local Economy • Promoting the Community by becoming a ‘Unity of Community” • Providing Networking and Business Development Opportunities I feel it both a privilege and an honor to be able to be a part of this great community we all call “home” and look forward to serving in 2016 and working together with my Chamber colleagues to strengthen Warwick’s diverse range of businesses and community based activities. Please feel free to contact me at (845) 988-5522 or kitchenandbathworks@yahoo.com at anytime to share your ideas and suggestions to make our Chamber even that much stronger.

Go Green for Vets

Change one light to green and help shine a light on America’s veterans with the Green Team Home Selling System. The national promotion was designed to encourage people to celebrate Veterans Day by changing one light to green in a visible location and keep it glowing every day as a symbol of support for our veterans. The Green Team would not only display green spot lights but would distribute a few hundred or so to anyone who requested one. The Bielings, owners of Roe Brothers in Florida, NY, came to the rescue by ordering, then donating boxes of green bulbs. “It’s important to honor our veterans,” said Green, “This is one way to show them our support.”

March 5 Comedy Night

Join the Warwick Foundation for Excellence in Learning for WFEL’s 2016 Comedy Night Fundraiser, Saturday March 5 at Jester’s Comedy Club in Chester. Jester’s is generously donating 25% of all admissions to WFEL. You are invited to come out with your friends for some laughs while supporting our schools. This is an adult-only evening with headliner comedian! Tickets will be available through the Jester’s website http://jesterscomedyclubny.com/tickets. html (scroll down to the fifth of March). For $25 each, doors open 8:00pm with tricky tray. Show starts 9:00pm. Like us on Facebook for more events and updates: www.facebook.com/WFELNY/!

Chamber of Commerce New Member Luncheons by Sherry Bukovcan, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Membership Chairperson

Our new members’ luncheon for the month of November was held at Kites restaurant at the beautiful Crystal Springs (Mineral Spa) Resort in Vernon, New Jersey. The cozy atmosphere, complete with an inviting fireplace and large elegant granite bar, makes this a a warm and wonderful place to dine with friends and family any day of the week. Besides their delicious food, great children’s menu, and variety of cocktails, Kites provides fun weekend evenings with DJ and dancing. Located at 2 Chamonix Drive, they also provide babysitting service on site.

St. Anthony Community Hospital, part of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network | Bon Secours Charity Health System, hosted our December luncheon in the Greenbrier Room at the Mount Alverno Center. This assisted living facility is bright, well-maintained, and has such a friendly and cheerful staff. Residents have multiple residence options, even a small apartment with a living room and a separate bedroom and bathroom. A delicious variety of foods was prepared for us by the very talented and knowledgeable chef Director Marc Brezina. Mount Alverno is located at 20 Grand Street in Warwick, New York. On behalf of the Warwick Valley Chamber of Commerce, I’d like to thank these establishments for their generosity.

Now’s The Time to Make a Home Inventory

by Stuart S. Durland, AAI, AINS, CPIA, Vice President Seely & Durland, Inc.

As the daylight wanes, the temperatures fall, and winter sets in, ask yourself, what better time to do something you’ve put off forever? A home inventory, geared specifically to your higher-valued possessions, is one of the best things you can do. The worst time to try and do this inventory is after a loss. Seely & Durland Insurance would like to provide you with this quick guide to get started:

• Take digital photos of jewelry, electronics, artwork, appliances Store them on the Internet in the cloud via Drop Box, iCloud, One Drive, or SkyDrive. • Serial numbers should be associated with the pictures, if available. • Scan and save receipts. • Consider a fireproof safe for items that can’t be stored in the cloud.

Last but not least, if you have any one precious item that is valued in excess of $1,000, contact Seely & Durland Insurance, 13 Oakland Avenue, Warwick (845) 986-1177 www.seely-durland.com, Trusted Choice Independent Insurance Agent, to be sure it’s properly covered. Insurance ‘floaters’ which cover a specific item are very inexpensive!

The Key Difference Lessons in Leadership

by Tina M. Buck, KeyBank Manager, Warwick Branch (845) 986-2251

Leadership is not a birthright or job title, nor is it the outcome of having a large number of direct reports or broad budgetary responsibilities. Instead, great leaders are defined by how well they empower others— regardless of their talents, interests or background—and create opportunities for them to succeed. The following are three tenets of leadership. • Leadership is action. Before you lead others, you must lead yourself. • Leadership is accountability. Understand and own your role. • Leadership is cooperation. You will learn more from others than they learn from you. And not every leadership path leads to the corner office. Most, however, lead to a more rewarding career and role in the community. KeyBank Manager Tina M. Buck is at 5 Maple Avenue in Warwick., Tina_M_Buck@KeyBank.com.
