Ten years ago, social media seemed like a passing fad that only “kids” were using to communicate, not an important tool that can make-or-break your business. Today, a business that doesn’t use social media is a business who isn’t communicating with their consumers. Platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram are critical tools that businesses need to use to be successful in the 21st century. With various platforms that are free to use, businesses, now more than ever, are encouraged to take a step into the digital world and use social media to their advantage.

Many people feel intimidated by social media and often don’t know where to start or why they should create an account. The Warwick Valley Chamber joined Facebook in 2010 and during that time, has gained over 2,000 likes and followers. But what does that mean? It means that over 2,000 individuals are seeing what the Chamber is posting. The Chamber shares out everything from their own events, news, or pictures to Chamber members’ posts. Although Facebook isn’t the only social media platform that can be helpful for your business, it could be the most helpful. Tons of social media users already have the app downloaded on their phones and often use Facebook as a search engine. By using Facebook, you’re already in their pocket.

2 The Chamber Connection

From the Chamber President Mechelle Casciotta Owner of Kitchen & Bath Works and Warwick Valley Appliances

What an honor it is to be our Chamber’s President, to be part of a great team of business leaders working to not only inspire other businesses but to support and promote them as well. Our chamber of commerce is a group that’s dedicated to protecting and promoting the local business community. Our primary goal? To help business owners network and grow. We host networking events, fundraisers, workshops, and other activities, all with the aim of connecting local business owners.

Should your business be part of the Chamber? The Chamber of Commerce has a good reputation, many consumers have positive perceptions of members and their businesses in fact, you may be interested to know that according to a study conducted by the Schapiro Group, 49% of consumers were more likely to think favorably of a local business if it was a member of the local Chamber—and 80% were more likely to purchase a product or service from a Chamber member.

On that note, I want to encourage people to actively support those merchants and business professionals who display their Chamber membership decal. It’s these people who care enough about the community where we live and make our living. Tell them you appreciate their contributions and help to inspire them in what they wish to accomplish. To our Warwick merchants and business professionals who have not yet joined, we encourage and invite you to become part of this important organization. Joining Chamber is a great opportunity to contribute to Warwick’s prosperity not only for ourselves but for other individuals and businesses too. Let us help inspire and support you to make your business all that you know it can be. As always please feel free to contact me directly with any thoughts, questions or concerns.

Business Valuation

Determining the value of your business helps you plan your future. Valuation does not have to be time consuming or expensive. Along with planning, it ensures business continuity despite any unexpected events. “The May twenty-third event generated great discussions and networking opportunities. In response to attendee feedback, we plan to offer this free program again,” said Young. From the Caboose by Executive Director Michael Johndrow

Hello from the Caboose! Our year is half over, but having waited for warmer weather interminably, I think we can safely say that it is here.

Our Community Showcase, held this year in the Village of Warwick’s downtown, was a slam dunk for both our 80 vendors and our village merchants. The Showcase, in its 10th year, is an event that needs “refreshing” every so often to maintain the public’s interest. I hope many of you who did not participate had a chance to attend.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank those who have renewed their membership – many even more promptly than in the past! Even though some members find it difficult to attend our networking events on a regular basis, submit newsletter articles, or participate as guests on our radio show, it is obvious that you value your membership regardless. In addition to your membership acting as a credential, our website directories are averaging over 10,000 hits per month! The fact that our Chamber is constantly promoting your business and the area for tourism affects all our members, whether it is directly or indirectly. Please be sure to take advantage of our many benefits whenever you are able, and contact us anytime as needed to more adequately promote you and your business. Our 23rd Annual Taste of Warwick will take place, as always, at the Warwick Valley Winery on Tuesday, September 12, 2017. Be sure to get your tickets early to receive the discount. Seriously, where else can you have a choice of 25 restaurants, 3 wineries, 3 breweries and 3 distilleries plus live music under a giant tent for 3 hours, at only $100 per couple? Our ever-popular Applefest—number 29—will take place on the first of October. Sponsorship tables are still available. Honestly, with an average crowd of 35,000 people, how much more business exposure can you hope for? Call the Caboose (845-986-2720) to learn about all the benefits of sponsorship at Orange County’s largest festival.

This Chamber has made it our mission to motivate people to visit the Warwick Valley. Your responsibility as a proud member is to motivate them to come back! Take care, prosper, and keep up the good work.

Facebook for Businesses... continued from page 1

• Social media platforms, such as Facebook, allows a business to connect with customers in a new way that is helpful to both parties involved. Businesses can share information about what they do or what they sell and can then receive feedback from their consumers. Comments, likes and shares provide insight into what your customers think about what you do. •

Customer Service

Expand Your Network

• Every business knows that happy customers share their experiences… and so do dissatisfied customers. There are countless websites on the internet that allow consumers to share their experiences with businesses, such as Yelp and Trip Advisor. Facebook is a platform that also allows customers to write reviews and more importantly, allows businesses to comment back, creating an open conversation between the consumer and business. By reaching out to those who rate your business, you can find out what you did well and what could be improved. • As a business, boosted posts are a very helpful tool to reach customers. Boosted posts allow you to target audiences that may not already know about your business for a small fee. By selecting who you want to connect with (age, gender, location), your post will reach a new audience that would be interested in your products and services. If you’re new to social media, it can be overwhelming or confusing. Here are just a few tips that could help get you started:

• When creating posts, always upload a picture with it! Whether it’s a picture of an item on sale or just a picture that applies to the topic of your post, pictures grab consumers’ attention. You’re more likely to get a like or share on a post when it’s accompanied with a photo.

Founders’ Day Sponsor

Greater Hudson Bank was a proud sponsor of the Founders’ Day event held April 15, 2017. In addition to providing the tent for the event, several members of the Greater Hudson staff were in attendance to greet guests with an opportunity to spin the GHB Prize Wheel for a chance to win one of several free gifts. Despite the chilly weather the event was well attended. Always dedicated to the community, everyone at Greater Hudson Bank is pleased to have had the opportunity to sponsor and participate in the Village of Warwick’s Sesquicentennial Anniversary.

• If your business is hosting an event, create an event on Facebook! It could be a grand opening celebration, a fundraiser or even a sale…creating an event on Facebook allows customers to RSVP and will even send them notifications reminding them of it.

Keep Your Exempt Status

Total Accountability would like to help you keep your tax-exempt status. Applying for tax-exempt status can be expensive and time consuming, however, this is just the beginning. After the IRS approves a tax-exempt status, it’s equally important to stay exempt. It’s easy for a section 501(c)(3) organization to jeopardize its exemption if it ceases to be operated exclusively for exempt purposes. The compliance rules in maintaining taxexempt status can be hard to understand. If you need guidance, or if you wish to form a new nonprofit organization and obtain tax-exempt status, contact Natalia Fisher, E.A. at (347) 249-3535 or e-mail Fisher at nfisher@totalaccountability.us. Choosing the right professional matters. Strive for Total Accountability.

Family Businesses Need a Succession Plan by Tina M. Buck, KeyBank Manager, Warwick Branch, 845 610-6515

The correlation between succession planning and business longevity is direct: one third of family-owned businesses have a succession plan, and 30 percent of family-owned businesses survive the transfer to the second generation. Here are four tips to build a successful plan: 1. Inclusion. Involve the next generation in operations as early as possible. 2. Development. Identify and support future leaders. 3. Vision. Have and share short-, medium- and long-term plans for the company. 4. Execution. Ensure your plan is well defined, fair, and transparent. A strong professional advisory team consisting of an attorney, CPA firm and bank can help you build this plan.

Medicare ID Cards Now Employ Improved Security

If you are already on Medicare, you have probably noticed that your Medicare ID number is your social security number. With everything we hear about identity theft, this does not seem very safe. The good news is that this is changing and Medicare will be using a Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI). You will not have to do anything to get your new card with new number as it will be sent to you automatically so do not give any information out to anyone that calls looking for your information. Call Megan Brady at Senior Insurance Associates with all your Medicare needs (973) 702-1122.

Corporate Sponsorship

The Warwick Valley Chamber of Commerce would like to take this opportunity to give thanks to our Corporate Sponsors. Without their support, the chamber would be unable to provide the quality programs and events that we produce for our membership. The chamber’s Corporate Sponsorship program is just three years young. We have been so fortunate that St. Anthony Community Hospital, Seely & Durland Insurance, ShopRite of Warwick, Edward Jones Investments and Warwick Valley Telephone have chosen to remain with the program since its conception and thank top level sponsor Myles Wealth Management for committing to this second year.
