REWARDS FOR THE TRIBE 5 – Sat 8 Oct 8pm

Chunky Move and Restless Dance Theatre

Wed

Whimsical set and costume designs by Jonathon Oxlade both reference and topple the idealistic forms found in artist Mondrian’s 20th century minimalist Colour Composition Series. As images of so-called perfection collapse and crumple in an unpredictable dance between the ensemble and pliable objects, what is revealed is the need for collaboration, creativity, and the time-honoured ritual of image making to make sense of a world that is wonky.

Rewards for the Tribe celebrates the imaginations of artists while embracing life’s exquisite chaos.

mandla rae

Told through an unflinching narrative, weaving poetry and storytelling together with destruction and colourful chaos, join mandla as they rise from the dead and reclaim their misplaced power.

Performed against a backdrop of stunning scenography and multi-dimensional soundscapes, two contrasting works examine the past and present. Six dancers rise from the ashes with powerful explosive dance that uncovers the rich history of lives lived; human struggle and people letting go… Rooted in African and contemporary culture, ACE dance and music collaborate with two internationally acclaimed choreographers, Serge Aimé Coulibaly and Vincent Mantsoe.

“My name is mandla. It means power. I gave it to myself.” Writer and performer mandla rae has a selective memory and is scrambling to piece together a life mostly forgotten in the name of survival. Through the exploration of mandla’s fragmented asylum and migration memories, this piece asks questions about belonging, trauma and forgiveness.

PRE-CONCERT TALK

CBSO returns for an evening rich in melody, lyricism, humour and with just a touch of melancholy. Described as an ‘out-take’ from Adams’ opera Nixon In China, The Chairman Dances features swooping movie-style themes. There’s a searing intensity to the opening of Finzi’s Clarinet Concerto, and a delightful spontaneity that will showcase the skills of CBSO clarinettist Oliver Janes. The evening closes with Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances, his final completed work and one that many view as his best.

DONORSPOTLIGHT

Coventry resident Margaret Summers (1944-2015) loved classical music and regularly attended free lunchtime concerts with her husband, Terry, here at Warwick Arts Centre. Margaret was so inspired by the free arts access that she left a gift supporting music at Warwick in her will. In recognition of Margaret’s forward-looking generosity, we’ve named the Summers Music Ensemble Room in her memory.
