Safe Surrey Coalition platform promise to build SkyTrain to Newton Surrey Council awards $17.5-million contract for Surrey-Langley SkyTrain early works

Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum (centre) and his Safe Surrey Coalition councillors (left to right) Doug Elford, Allison Patton, Laurie Guerra and Mandeep Nagra. EVEN as certain organizations and individuals are trying their level best to sabotage the Surrey Langley SkyTrain Extension, the Safe Surrey Coalition is standing firmly behind its promise to build it. “We have heard loud and clear from Surrey residents that they want SkyTrain to Newton and as part of Safe Surrey Coalitions’ 2022 campaign, one of the main pillars of our platform will be to build SkyTrain from King George Station

to Newton,” said Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum on Monday. “SkyTrain to Newton will spur economic growth along the corridor and help us fight climate change by providing an alternative mode of transportation” said the Safe Surrey Coalition. During the 2018 election, Doug McCallum and the Safe Surrey Coalition made a promise to cancel LRT and build the SkyTrain to Langley. The Safe Surrey Coalition

No excitement as Jinny Sims announces her run for mayor in Surrey AS had been expected for a long time now — a bit too long, indeed — NDP MLA from SurreyPanorama, Jinny Sims, officially announced on Wednesday that she will run for mayor in Surrey. Her Surrey Forward party also announced four candidates — June Liu, Jim Bennett, Ramon Bandong and Theresa Pidcock (no name recognition here!) — for Surrey City Council. (Sims should stick to provincial politics. It was unfair of Premier John Horgan not to give her a ministry – especially after she had to step down as minister before the last election because of a vicious campaign against her by the BC Liberals that proved to be nothing but slander.) Of course, we are also waiting for Surrey-Newton Liberal MP Sukh Dhaliwal and former South SurreyWhite Rock Liberal MP Gordon Hogg (who is also a former White Rock mayor and MLA) to declare their run for the same post … and maybe one other prominent name. earlier. New rapid transit is long overdue in Surrey. At a time when the environment and global warming is at the forefront, the need to get people out of their fossil fuel burning cars and into transit has never been greater.” The construction contract, awarded to B&B Heavy Civil Construction Ltd., consists of Fraser Highway widening to four lanes with cycling and pedestrian facilities and a widened centre median to accommodate the upcoming SLS Project. Works consist of road widening, concrete curbs, sidewalks, multi-use paths, retaining walls,

street lighting, traffic signals, wildlife culvert, fish passage improvements and in-stream works. The contract includes roadworks at Fraser Highway from George Junction to East of 96 Avenue and culvert replacement work on Fraser Highway at Quibble Creek. The contract work is expected to start this month and be completed by May 2023. In fall 2020, Council approved an optimized four-lane Fraser Highway design between 140 Street and 148 Street through Green Timbers. The design establishes two lanes of travel

in each direction in one of the most congested corridors in the City and an unfinished central median as Early Works to allow for the establishment of the future Surrey-Langley SkyTrain (“SLS”) guideway installation. On July 12, 2021, Council approved construction of the Fraser Highway improvements between 14200-Block and 148 Street. Phase 1 was predominantly completed in fall 2021 with completion of remaining in-stream work scheduled for June 2022. For the full Corporate Report, visit our website voiceonline.com

mainstream media — only ended up backfiring. Surrey-ites were so disgusted by that tactic that even a rabidly anti-McCallum newspaper wrote that that was not the way to behave. Wait for the election, stupid! Isn’t it REALLY ironical that a politician who won in the last municipal election by promising to replace the colonial RCMP with a modern municipal police force and to build the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain extension faced a vicious, unrelenting sabotage campaign for doing just that! But he (McCallum) stuck to his promises AND succeeded. There is no way that the Surrey Police Service can be disbanded – and the SkyTrain extension is fully financed. McCallum’s support in Surrey still remains solid in spite of the ongoing campaign by the RCMP and the mainstream media against him. That was very clear when hundreds of his

supporters showed up at Wednesday’s Surrey City Council meeting in reaction to Monday’s racist, fascist disruption of the Council by pro-RCMP old white guys in order to pressure McCallum to step down as mayor. What world are they living in? (The racist, fascist Komagata Maru incident was in 1914, wasn’t it?) Yes, there was no excitement at Sims’ announcement — and DON’T expect excitement at other announcements, too. Yes, they will all bring some supporters to robustly cheer them for the cameras. BUT, in the end, it will be the SILENT majority and not the SCREECHING minority that will prevail.

INCIDENTALLY, you will find this report from The VOICE in February 2019 – “More than $800,000 could not save Tom Gill and his Surrey First from a humiliating defeat” -- very interesting:

Dianne Watts: Her support didn’t matter SURREY First spent $817,136.65 in last year’s Surrey civic election, according to Elections BC documents posted on their website. Yet despite those big bucks and the advantage of incumbency as well as the all-out support of former mayor Dianne Watts and then-mayor Linda Hepner, Surrey First’s mayoral can-

didate Tom Gill and the Surrey First team (except for Linda Annis who saved her skin by suddenly going against her own party on the Rosemary Heights development project) suffered a humiliating defeat. Surrey-ites were simply fed up with the arrogance of Watts and Hepner. Surrey First had taken the people for granted. Doug McCallum’s Safe Surrey Coalition won eight of the nine Council seats by spending $247,289.48. Integrity Now – former Surrey First councillor Bruce Hayne’s party – spent $224,915.77 but didn’t win a single seat. As The VOICE reported last October [2018], McCallum got 45,564 votes, Gill garnered 28,553 votes, while Hayne came third with 28,077 votes. Not only did McCallum win convincingly, but also seven of the eight candidates for council on his Safe Surrey Coalition slate won equally convincingly.

Vancouver man charged in stabbing death of his brother

A Vancouver man has been charged in the stabbing death of his brother in East Vancouver on Sunday morning. BC Prosecution Service has ap-

proved one count of second-degree murder against Alexander Trimble, 27, in connection with the death of Zachary Trimble, 23, Vancouver Police said on Monday.

Alexander Trimble was arrested Sunday after Vancouver Police responded to reports of an assault at a home near Bruce Street and East 49 Avenue shortly before 3 a.m. Of-

ficers discovered Zachary Trimble badly injured outside the house. He later died from his injuries. Alexander Trimble remains in custody.

Liberals pass off Conservative ideas on immigration as their own: MP Jasraj Hallan

JASRAJ Singh Hallan, Conservative critic for Immigration Refugees and Citizenship, and Kyle Seeback, Conservative critic for Environment and Climate Change, say they welcome the government incorporating Conservative ideas found in Seeback’s private member’s bill (PMB), Bill C-242, into law. In a statement on Tuesday, they said: “Once again, the Liberals are taking credit for common-sense Conservative ideas and trying to pass them off as their own. “Today, Minister Fraser made a sweeping announcement about changes to Canada’s super visa program based solely on the ideas presented in a Conservative PMB that Liberals had vocally opposed. Exempliied by the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, MP MarieFrance Lalonde, who said on the loor of the House, ‘the government does not

Enhancements to super visa program for parents, grandparents to reunite families more easily and for longer SEAN Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, on Tuesday announced enhancements to Canada’s super visa program that will make it easier for Canadians to reunite with their parents and grandparents in Canada and will allow super visa holders to stay for a longer period of time. These changes, which come into force on July 4, will: * increase the length of stay for super visa holders to ive years per entry into Canada

– People who have a super visa also have the option to request to extend their stay by up to two years while in Canada. This means super visa holders will now be able to stay in Canada for up to seven consecutive years. * allow the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship to designate international medical insurance companies to provide coverage to super visa applicants in the future

– Currently, only Canadian insurance providers can provide the necessary medical coverage that super visa applicants are required to have. Information about any designated medical insurance companies located outside of Canada will be communicated on IRCC’s website at a later date. Since 2011, Canadian citizens and permanent residents have been able to reunite with their

Minister of Public Safety, added: “Reuniting families is a priority for our Government and contributes to our success and strength as a country— particularly, as we work to recover from the pandemic and reconnect with our loved ones. I want to thank the Canada Border Services Agency employees who are working with partners to help unite Canadian citizens and permanent residents with their families, while keeping our borders safe and secure.”

QUICK FACTS

Sean Fraser. Photo: Twitter parents and grandparents in Canada for extended periods of time through Canada’s super visa program. This multipleentry visa, which is valid for up to 10 years, has allowed parents and grandparents to remain in Canada for two years at a time. This makes the super visa more beneicial than a regular multiple-entry visitor visa, under which the length of stay is usually six months or less. Fraser said: “Families are at the heart of Canadian society. The enhancements to the super visa program allow family members to reunite for longer in Canada, which helps everyday Canadian citizens and permanent residents succeed and contribute to society, while affording their parents and grandparents invaluable opportunities to spend time with their family in Canada.” Marco E. L. Mendicino,

* For over a decade, the super visa has remained a popular and accessible option for Canadian citizens and permanent residents to reunite with their parents and grandparents in Canada. Each year, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada issues approximately 17,000 super visas. * To adequately support super visa holders while in Canada, their host child or grandchild must meet minimum income requirements.

* In addition, parents and grandparents applying for a super visa must have a medical examination and provide proof of private health insurance from an approved insurance provider. This is so super visa holders can receive emergency health care while they are in Canada, while ensuring that the cost of those services does not fall upon Canadian taxpayers.

Conservatives slam Liberals for “taking credit for good ideas” CONTINUED FROM 3 support the member’s proposal to allow super visa applicants to purchase private health insurance from foreign companies.’ Curious then this exact idea from the member’s proposal is now palatable to her government. “The truth is family reunification through the super visa program is a crucial issue that has been proven to not only be an immeasurable help to new Canadians but also beneficial to Canada’s overall success. MP Seeback’s bill specifically addressed areas in the program that could be improved to

work better for immigrant communities, including, extending the length of stay up to five years, being able to request a twoyear extension, and recognizing approved international insurance coverage among others. Now, three of these ideas will be implemented for Canadians at the end of the month. “Conservatives have been supporting Bill C-242 since it was introduced in the House, and most recently Conservative members of the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration (CIMM) highlighted how important these changes were to new Canadians amongst naysaying from the Lib-

erals. It is clear this was nothing but political theatre to set up taking credit for good ideas. “Conservatives stand with Canada’s immigrant communities and will always propose innovative legislation to address their needs. Removing barriers to families staying together and promoting policies that help boost the economy will always be a priority. While the Liberals are more concerned with playing political games to misguide Canadians, Conservatives will continue to focus on what needs to be done.” Kyle Seeback

Fighting hate requires new strategies, says B.C.’s Human Rights Commissioner Survey finds 72% never reported hate incidents to anyone

AN overwhelming number of people who participated in a public survey for the inquiry into hate in the pandemic say they never reported the hate incidents they experienced to anyone – not the police, a manager, human resources, school, or lawyer. That is one of the key takeaways from the inquiry, which has now finished the public participation phase. More than 2,600 people participated in a public survey. After reviewing all responses, 930 surveys were determined to be from

people who witnessed, experienced or were affected by hate incidents during the pandemic. Of those, 72% of respondents did not report the hate incident they experienced or witnessed and 68% said they didn’t think a report would make a difference. “Clearly, new strategies are needed to deal with the experience of hate incidents,” said Commissioner Kasari Govender on Wednesday. “To address the rise of hate in our communities, people who experience

• 58% of respondents felt that the rise in hate incidents was due to the perpetrators blaming certain groups for the pandemic • 56% felt that the increase in experiences of hate was due to a normalization of hate incidents online and elsewhere How respondents described the perpetrator: • 73% reported the perpetrator was a stranger, followed by a person in authority (19%), or a professional (16%) • 75% of respondents reported that perpetrators were white • 67% said that perpetrators tended to be men and between 25 and 65 B.C.’s Office of the Human Rights Commissioner is reviewing all submissions received since the inquiry began last August, including over 100 oral and written submissions from people representing more than 60 organizations. Govender thanked everyone who participated in the Inquiry. “I am grateful to all those who shared their stories. I want to assure you that your voice has been heard and the information you shared with us will be very valuable as I prepare my report with recommendations. The experiences of hate in our communities is at the heart of this work.” B.C.’s Office of the Human Rights Commissioner will release the inquiry final report and recommendations in early 2023.

Moose Wala murder: Two shooters from Maharashtra identified, police say New Delhi (IANS /others): The Special Cell of Delhi Police has identified two shooters from Maharashtra that were involved in the brutal killing of Punjabi singer Shubhdeep Singh, popularly known as Sidhu Moose Wala. The identities of the two accused shooters — Santosh Yadav and Nav Nath Suryawanshi — were revealed during the interrogation of their close aide, Sidhesh Hiraman Kamle a.k.a. Mahakaal, who was arrested from Pune during a joint operation by the Delhi Police and the Maharashtra Police. Special Commissioner of Police, H.S. Dhaliwal, said both the shooters were paid Rs. 350,000 each to commit the gruesome murder of the Punjabi singer. “It was Mahakaal who introduced both these shooters to the main perpetrators and got Rs. 50,000 for it,” the senior police official said. He said the police had issued eight pictures of

Sidhu Moose Wala the suspects and six of the shooters had been identified. Out of them, the role of four in the murder, which took place in Punjab’s Mansa last month, has been established.

Meanwhile, the Tribune newspaper of Chandigarh reported that one of the sharp shooters who allegedly fired at Moose Wala — Harkamal Ranu of Bathinda — has been arrested. His family members claimed they have handed him over to the Punjab Police. Moosewala, 28, was shot dead on May 29 while he was driving his Mahindra Thar SUV. About a dozen assailants fired numerous shots at him. The singer’s autopsy report revealed that his body bore 19 bullet injury marks. During the last media briefing on June 8, Dhaliwal had said that since Moose Wala’s murder, four teams of Special Cell had been working on the case and the probe had revealed that gangster Lawrence Bishnoi was the mastermind behind the singer’s killing. Meanwhile, Interpol has issued a Red Corner Notice against Satinderjeet Singh alias Goldy

Brar who allegedly claimed responsibility for the killing of Moose Wala. Brar is reported to be living in Canada. The Punjab Police had sought a Red Corner Notice against Brar on May 30 in connection with two old cases, officials said. Brar, a native of Sri Muktsar Sahib, had gone to Canada on a student visa in 2017. Punjab Police allege that he is connected to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. The Indian Police’s allegations against Brar have not been proven in court and Brar has not made any statement on these. Moosewala’s murder was allegedly in retaliation to Akali youth leader Vicky Middukhera’s killing that took place last year. For more stories on Moose Wala, visit our World Section. BCLC advises $3 Road to Riches Scratch & Win players to re-check tickets ers checked approximately 1,898 $3 Road to Riches Scratch & Win tickets yesterday at retail locations or on the Lotto! App. Of tickets checked, approximately 503 were winning tickets but displayed a “not a winner” message. Of the winning tickets, approximately 83 per cent were for tickets that won $3 to $15 prizes, and 15 per cent were for free-play tickets; the remaining prizes were for $20 (7 tickets), $30 (2 tickets) and $100 (1 ticket). BCLC began to review ticket validations for $3 Road to Riches after a player contacted BCLC on June 6, 2022, regarding a ticket that showed as “not a winner” on a ticketchecking terminal, even though the symbols scratched on the ticket corresponded to a prize. Out of an abundance of caution, BCLC said it later suspended validations for the $3 Road to Riches game while it reviewed the issue. As of approximately 5 a.m. on June 7, BCLC had tested and confirmed that validations for this game were working as expected and indicating accurately whether a ticket had

won or not. BCLC confirmed that no other ticket was impacted by this error related to the loading of validation files into BCLC’s gaming system.

It said it is reviewing the matter so that it can be prevented in the future. Players who have questions may contact BCLC’s Customer Support Centre.

NOW OPENED IN CLOVERDALE !! THE BC Lottery Corporation (BCLC) on Tuesday advised British Columbians who played its new $3 Road to Riches Scratch & Win product on June 6 to re-check their tickets following an error that occurred in a system that validates whether the ticket has won or not. BCLC said it is working to notify players as soon as possible so that they can re-check tickets, wherever possible. “We sincerely apologize to our valued players for the error,” it added. Players who purchased a $3 Road to Riches on Monday – the first day that the new ticket launched – can re-check their ticket(s) at any BCLC lottery retail location, on the Lotto! App or by calling BCLC at 1-866-815-0222. BCLC’s systems indicate that, in total, play-

TransLink launches new volunteer program TRANSLINK announced on Tuesday it is launching a Community Transit Volunteer Program to help customers connect with communities and have the best possible transit experience. Beginning this summer, trained volunteers will be stationed outside Fare Paid Zones at transit hubs in their own communities. This will enable volunteers to act as neighbourhood experts and help customers navigate the area. TransLink volunteers will answer customer questions and help direct riders during

busy community events. They will also share useful information about TransLink projects and programs. All participants will be asked to undergo a background check. The new program is part of TransLink’s Customer Experience Action Plan, announced in March. Rating agencies validate B.C.’s financial plan BRITISH Columbia’s continued stable credit ratings show that key stakeholders in the financial community validate the Province’s financial plan for investing in the services people need and building a strong, sustainable future for B.C., the government said on Friday. Despite major global events that have increased inflationary pressures and left no province or country unaffected, all four of the main international and domestic rating agencies have reaffirmed B.C.’s strong position. “Confirmation of B.C.’s stable credit rating is further evidence of the value of our focus on putting people first. Investing in the services people need,

DBRS Morningstar’s confirmation of British Columbia’s credit rating on June 8, concludes this year’s review process by the four

rating agencies. The report states B.C. has a record of “outperformance”. “Despite rising debt from a pandemic-driven deficit, which was further exacerbated by the November 2021 flooding and earlier wildfires, B.C. continues to have one of the lowest debt burdens among provinces,” DBRS’s report said. Alongside DBRS, all rating agencies cited the strength and diversity of the Province’s economy and strong fiscal management practices, combined with considerable fiscal flexibility and high levels of contingencies as key factors behind the high ratings. A recent Fitch report, which confirmed its continued strong rating for B.C., stated that, “British Co-

introduced this week. Aldag said that when he entered politics in 2015, he introduced Bill C-274 which would act on Call to Action 79 to give representation to First Nations, Métis, and Inuit persons on the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada. He noted: “Bill C-23 will give legal protection to Canada’s historic sites for the first time and ensures Indigenous Peoples have a stronger voice in identifying and protecting places of historic significance in Canada. As we build new monuments such as a national monument to survivors and victims of residential schools, Indigenous representation is critical. This bill will designate three seats on that board specifically for First Nations, Métis and Inuit representatives.” Aldag said: “The board must also rely on Indigenous knowledge when making its recommendations. Canada has historic places from coast to coast to coast. Canada’s inclusion of Indigenous representation will take an important step in advancing our commitment to recognizing Indigenous history and implementing Call to Action 79.” He added: “The new bill also requires the protection and conservation of the heritage value of historic places, undertake scientific studies to understand, and defend against threats to the sites. These protections along with Indigenous representations will conserve our historic sites for longer and strengthen the historical representation of Canada.”

B.C.’S speculation and vacancy tax (SVT) helped make homes more affordable in the SVT areas of the province, based on independent analysis by Tsur Somerville and Jake Wetzel. “Homes should be homes, not safety deposit boxes,” said Selina Robinson, Minister of Finance, on Thursday. “Two leading researchers in housing affordability have highlighted how the SVT turned thousands of empty units into homes for people and kept prices lower than they would have been without the tax. The tax is working to keep homes available in the middle of a housing crisis instead of them being left empty by speculators.” The first comprehensive analysis of the SVT (Review Report) since it was launched in 2018 shows that, prior to the pandemic, it was helping improve home prices for renters and owners. It also confirms that the tax, specifically the 2% tax rate for foreign owners and satellite families, encouraged the return of approximately 20,000 condo units to the long-term rental market in Metro Vancouver.

NDP prioritizes Premier’s mega museum over safety of Vancouver students: BC Liberals

Michael Lee has come forward in support of the museum, but has stayed silent when it comes to his government’s plan to defer seismic upgrades to the aging Killarney Secondary School.” A recent letter by the Vancouver School Board (VSB) to Education Minister Jennifer Whiteside confirms that no major school capital projects have been approved

for three consecutive years and that three seismically unsafe Vancouver schools previously promised by the NDP have now been deferred. Killarney Secondary and Churchill Secondary were promised capital funding as part of the NDP’s Seismic Mitigation Program, but both projects have now been frozen to fund the new billion-dollar vanity museum project, the BC Liberals said. “On one hand, George Chow and the NDP are blaming the school construction freeze on cost pressures from the pandemic and recent flooding, but at the same time, they are full steam ahead with a billion-dollar museum project that nobody asked for — it doesn’t add up,” added

Lee. “Parents, students and educators are outraged by this decision and they have every right to be.” Additionally, Chow and the NDP government have failed to deliver on their

$4.5 million investment promise for the Sunset Seniors Centre, a project that both municipal and federal governments have pledged funding for, but one that continues to be ignored by

the B.C. government, the BC Liberals pointed out. For the May 27, 2022, Vancouver Board of Education letter to Minister Jennifer Whiteside, visit our website voiceonline.com

THE BC Liberals on Thursday said that while the NDP government freezes school capital projects so it can roll ahead with Premier John Horgan’s billion-dollar vanity museum project, NDP MLA for Vancouver-Fraserview George Chow remains silent on the impact this will have on students in seismically unsafe schools in his riding. “It’s hard to understand the NDP government’s decision to spend one billion dollars for a brand-new museum that nobody wants while freezing the construction of schools and other capital projects around B.C. that are in desperate need of seismic upgrades,” said Michael Lee, MLA for Vancouver-Langara. “It’s quite remarkable that MLA Chow

Surrey Council approves contract for 3 artificial turf field replacements

SURREY City Council approved a $1.9 million contract to replace artificial turf fields at two of Surrey’s Athletic Parks at a Council Meeting last week. “Surrey’s numerous turf fields are in constant use by our local sport clubs for practices, games and tournaments,” said Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum. “Given the high demand for these playing fields, it makes good sense to keep them in good condition for all to enjoy. We know that active and engaged citizens result in strong and healthy communities.” The scope of work related to the artificial turf contract awarded to AstroTurf West Distributors Ltd. consists of the removal and disposal of end-of-lifecycle artificial turf, extraction, and collection of existing turf infill for reuse, remedial civil works on subgrade, and the supply and installation of replacement artificial turf surfaces on Field #9 at South Surrey Athletic Park and Field #1 and Field #5 at Newton Athletic Park. The work is expected to start this month and be completed by September. Twenty-one capital projects have been approved by Council under the $428 million Surrey Invests program, ranging from a new Athletics Centre at Bear Creek Park, the new Newton Community Centre with an Olympic size pool, the Cloverdale Sport and Ice Complex to smaller scope enhancements like new pickleball courts, bike parks, new playing surfaces for soccer and field hockey pitches. their community initiatives and celebrate with a dance floor, activities, games, food and performances. “I am impressed by the positive impact young people have in our city. The energy, dedication and creativity they brought to this year’s Surrey Step’s Up Youth Showcase must

be commended,” said Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum. “Thank you to all our local youth and future leaders for making Surrey Steps Up a resounding success and for continuing to be positive role models for those around you.” Hosted by the City of Surrey, Surrey RCMP and the

Surrey School District, and a Youth Planning Team, the annual Surrey Steps Up event allows Surrey’s young changemakers to take centre stage as they showcase their work to the public, including the celebration of good deeds, creative art and performances.

Vancouver’s Permit Task Force maintains steady progress after one year THE City of Vancouver’s Permitting Task Force has continued its progress towards reducing permit and licence wait times over the past year, despite a historic high number of new permit and licence applications that doubled between May 2021 and May 2022, the City said on Wednesday. Staff have addressed the application backlogs and are now processing 35% more applications across all permitting streams compared to May 2021 through a number of process improvements made over the past year. While steady progress has been made, there are still a number of areas to improve, including reducing the wait times for single family home, duplexes and laneway applications. However, now that staff have processed the surge in permit and licence applications from 2021, homeowners, home builders and businesses can expect wait times to continue to improve with faster turnarounds for applicants, and will continue to report back on progress through the Task Force. The latest Task Force improvements are: * Businesses can now expect to receive their business licence in as little as six weeks, compared to 16 weeks last year. * Homeowners and businesses can now expect to receive a permit for low-complexity renovations in as little as two weeks. Key improvements over the past year: * Commercial renovations are two weeks faster per application * Applicants are contacted within two-three

business days of their application * Reduced requirements for many businesses changing a space or occupancy, with permits issued 8-16 weeks sooner * Commercial spaces can be subdivided into multiple suites without expensive building improvements * The City has introduced the ability to pay online, check application status online, and download permits electronically Over the next two years, staff will build on the many improvements made to date and undertake an extensive review of the Development Permit process, the City said. Staff have been directed to asses the implications of guaranteed permitting timelines, including automatic approval or a fee waiver program, and report back to Council in 2023. To continue making improvements, Council has extended removing extra conditions and reviews for one- and two-family homes in specific neighbourhoods for another 24 months. Staff will also conduct a comprehensive review of the Protection of Trees Bylaw, following a 12-month pilot of its partial relaxation. The maximum tree size permitted for removal without a permit will revert back to 20 cm, and lessons learned from the pilot will inform the review. More information and a complete list of actions to streamline the permit and licensing process is available online. For a backgrounder, visit our website voiceonline.com

SURREY RCMP announced on Thursday that Chantelle Ashley Mulleady, 33, has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault and two counts of assault with a weapon in relation to two alleged unprovoked stabbings in the Guildford area. She remains in custody awaiting her next court appearance. On June 2 at approximately 12:55 p.m., Surrey RCMP received a report that a female had been stabbed inside a grocery store located in the 14600-block of 104 Avenue. The victim was given first aid at the scene and then transported to hospital with serious injuries. Police released a photo of the suspect and

asked for the public’s assistance with identifying her. On June 4 at approximately at 8:55 p.m., police were called to Walmart located in the 10300-block of 152 Street in Surrey for a report of a stabbing. The suspect had fled the store by the time police arrived. The victim was transported to hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Officers located and arrested the alleged suspect in the 15000-block of 104 Avenue. Drinking in Vancouver public plazas returns as permanent program for summer 2022 VANCOUVER City Council approved turning the Drinking in Public Plazas Program into a permanent seasonal program following two summers as a successful pilot. People looking for an outdoor space to enjoy take-out food, a moment of rest, or a picnic with friends and family, can responsibly enjoy an alcoholic beverage at six designated Vancouver public plazas this summer. “While the pandemic brought immense challenges to Vancouver, it also helped us to innovate with initiatives like the Drinking in Public Plazas Program, which I’m excited to see return this summer,” said Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart on Wednesday. “To the many people like me who do not have access to a backyard or private outdoor space, these plazas give us all a chance connect and socialize with one another while enjoying a drink outside.” As part of the 2022 program, visitors can responsibly consume alcohol at the following six participating plazas, which will operate from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, June 15 to October 16: * Cambie Street and 17 Avenue (Plaza steward: Cambie Village Business Association) * Granville Street and 13 Avenue – (South Granville Business Improvement Association) * Granville Street and 14 Avenue – (South Granville Business Improvement Association) * Lot 19, 855 West Hastings Street – (Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association) * Main Street and 21 Avenue – (Coco et Olive, Little Mountain Neighbourhood House, residents) * Maple Street and 4 Avenue – (Kitsilano West 4 Avenue Business Improvement Association) “Plaza stewards and community partners are the uniting force of this program — thank you to our partners for the vital role you play in helping to keep these plazas and spaces feel safe, clean and welcoming for all visitors,” says Lisa Parker, Director of Public Space and Street Use. Most plazas are within walking distance to essential public amenities like washrooms, but for those without existing washrooms nearby, temporary portable washrooms will

Coquitlam man charged in Surrey shooting

CHARGES have been laid in relation to a shooting that occurred in the Guildford area in March, Surrey RCMP announced on Tuesday. On March 23 at 9:30 p.m., Surrey RCMP received several calls reporting shots fired in the 15200-block of Flamingo Place. A subsequent call was received reporting a male had been shot. Police were able to locate the man, who was suffering from non-life-threatening injuries, at another location in Newton. The 19-year old victim was transported to hospital. Frontline officers, Community Response Unit and Surrey Gang Enforcement Team responded to the two separate locations and confirmed that the shooting occurred in the 15200-block of Flamingo Place. After the victim was shot, he fled the area in a vehicle. On June 1, 20-year-old Benjamin Sultan Sabetnia of Coquitlam was charged with aggravated assault, using a firearm in the commission of an offence, robbery with a firearm and discharging firearm with intent. He has been arrested and remains in custody awaiting his next court appearance. “This shooting took place within a residential neighbourhood in our community, causing grave concern to those who live in the area,” said Surrey RCMP Media Relations Officer Cpl. Vanessa Munn. “Investigators recognize the importance of following the evidence in each case, and identifying those responsible so they can be brought before the courts.”

Sidhu Moose Wala. New Delhi (IANS/agencies): The Delhi Police’s Special Cell has arrested one person from Pune who is said to be close aide of one of the shooters who was involved in the brutal killing of Punjabi singer Shubhdeep Singh, popularly known as Sidhu Moose Wala on May 29, police said on Wednesday. The accused was identified as Sidhesh Hiraman Kamle, alias Mahakaal. “He was arrested in a joint operation conducted by a team of Special Cell and Maharashtra Police,” Special Commissioner of Police, Special Cell, H.S. Dhaliwal, said. Dhaliwal said since the killing of Moosewala, four teams of Special Cell have been working on the case. “We questioned several gangsters across the India to identify the eight shooters who committed the crime,” he said. The probe has so far revealed that Lawrence Bishnoi is the alleged mastermind behind Moose Wala’s killing. The senior official did not

CCTV footage showed a man taking a selfie with Sidhu Moose Wala. share the name of the shooter with whom Kamle is associated. However, he maintained that he has strong linkages with one of the shooters and he can help trace out more than one shooter. The prime motive behind the Punjabi singer’s murder has not been revealed. “It is part of investigation and hence cannot be shared at this stage,” Dhaliwal said, adding all relevant information is being shared with the Punjab Police. On Tuesday, Punjab Police had claimed to have identified four shooters allegedly involved in Moose Wala’s killing and said that raids were being conducted to nab them. They also officially announced the arrest of at least eight persons for providing logistic support, conducting recce and harbouring shooters of the singer. A police spokesperson said those arrested have been identified as Sandeep Singh, alias Kekda, of Sirsa, Haryana; Manpreet Singh, alias Manna,

of Talwandi Sabo, Bathinda; Manpreet Bhau of Dhaipai, Faridkot; Saraj Mintu of Dode Kalsia village, Amritsar; Prabhdeep Sidhu, alias Pabbi, of Takhat-Mall, Haryana; Monu Dagar of Rewli village in Sonepat, Haryana; and Pawan Bishnoi and Naseeb, both residents of Fatehabad, Haryana. Additional Director-General of Police (ADGP), Anti-Gangster Task Force, Parmod Ban said in a statement Sandeep, alias Kekda, on the directions of a suspect based in Canada and Sachin Thapan, had kept tabs on the singer’s movements by posing as his fan. Kekda even took selfies with the singer when the latter left home minutes before his murder, he added. “Kekda shared inputs like the singer not being accompanied by guards, not travelling in a bullet-proof vehicle, number of occupants and vehicle details with the shooters and handlers operating from abroad,” Ban claimed.

CBI refutes claim of Punjab Police on extradition of alleged gangster from Canada Chandigarh (IANS): A day after Punjab Police claimed that it had sought a red corner notice for the extradition of Goldy Brar from Canada for allegedly claiming responsibility for killing of Punjabi singer Shubhdeep Singh, popularly known as Sidhu Moose Wala, on behalf of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday clarified that this request was made after the crime. The CBI said it received an email from Punjab Police with an attached letter of May 19 about Brar only on May 30, a day after Moose Wala was shot dead. As per the federal agency, the proposal for issuance of red corner notice against Satinderjeet Singh alias Goldy was received on May 30 at 12:25 p.m. from the Bureau of Investigation, Punjab Police, through email. “In this email dated May 30, a copy of letter dated May 19 was attached. Also, a hard copy of the same proposal was received from Punjab Police in IPCU [International Police Cooperation Unit], CBI, New Delhi on May 30. Even this request was received in the IPCU CBI on May 30, whereas as per information in public domain, the murder of Sidhu Moosewala took place on May 29. “The Punjab Police did not present the entire facts before the media yesterday [Wednesday]. There was no delay on our part,” it said. Earlier, a spokesperson for Punjab Police said on May 19, 10 days before the murder of Moose Wala, it had already sent the proposal to the CBI to issue a red corner notice against Brar, which would pave the way for his extradition to India. The proposal was sent on the basis of two cases, one dated November 12, 2020, and another of February 18, 2021.

‘Close aide of Lawrence Bishnoi sent death threat to Salman Khan’

New Delhi (IANS): The person who sent a death threat to Bollywood megastar Salman Khan and his father, film writer Salim Khan, has been identified as Vikram Brar, a close aide of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, police sources said on Thursday. Brar, who is currently said to be aboard, is reportedly facing two dozen criminal cases lodged against him in several states. “Brar is a resident of Rajasthan’s Hanumangarh but presently he is living abroad. He is a known gangster of Rajasthan. He was having good rapport with Anmol, the brother of gangster Anandpal, who was killed in an encounter,” the police source said.

and as a precaution, beefed up security at the Khans’ residence in Galaxy Apartments, Bandra West, since last Sunday. Joint Commissioner of Police Vishwas Nangre-Patil had also met Home Minister Dilip Walse-Patil to brief him. Mumbai Police suspected that the potential attackers may have conducted a discreet recce of the Khans’ local movements and their residence. Bishnoi had earlier vowed to kill Salman Khan after the actor was accused in the black buck poaching case of 1998 in Rajasthan. Salim Khan, 87, was handed over an unsigned, hand-written threat letter by an

unknown person on a bench where he normally rests after jogging at the Bandra Bandstand promenade, around 7:30 a.m. on Sunday. It was addressed to him and his son Salman and they immediately alerted their security to inform the police. Taking serious cognisance, the Bandra police had lodged an FIR against unknown persons for issuing the death threats and launched their probe. The Mumbai Police Crime Branch had also started its own investigations. The threat letter ended with a couple of initials including ‘L.B.’ which the police suspect refers to ‘Lawrence Bishnoi’.

Indian Government reaches out to all members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation New Delhi: After slamming the statement by the 57-member Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on the alleged denigration of Prophet Muhammed, India subsequently made a special effort at ensuring that Indian Ambassadors based in every OIC country were briefed and sent “talking points” to deal with the situation on June 5. Sources stated that the reference to BJP leaders Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal as “fringe elements” was not in the brief by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), but could have possibly emerged from a telephone conversation and was used “mistakenly” in the press statements. “The initial press statements wrongly described them as fringe elements,” an official said, adding that the intention of the phrase was to convey that the views they had expressed were “views of the fringe, not the government or the party”. Both Sharma and Kumar were prominent leaders of the BJP prior to their suspension. A six-point memo was sent to all the heads of mission (HOMs) in OIC countries on Sunday,

Nupur Sharma hours after the Ambassadors in Qatar and Kuwait were summoned. The memo, issued by Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra, told them to “monitor the developments and report them promptly” to New Delhi. It also counselled them to draft a statement which made all the points: that the Indian government respects all religions; that the comments denigrating a religious personality did not represent the gov-

Naveen Jindal ernment or the BJP, that “strong action” had been taken against those making the comments, and that the BJP had issued its own press release reiterating these points. In addition, the government asked the HOMs to caution their hosts that “vested interests” that are against bilateral relations are “inciting” people and that India and the host country must “work together” against such “mis-

chievous elements”, without naming India’s concerns about Pakistan. The MEA had reportedly gone into “damage control” mode on Saturday evening itself, when it was conveyed to Vice-President M. Venkaiah Naidu’s accompanying entourage, that the Vice-President’s counterpart in Doha, the Deputy Emir of Qatar, would not be able to host him for the ceremonial banquet planned for Sunday due to “medical reasons”. The Qatari government stated that the Deputy Emir was isolating due to a suspected exposure to COVID-19, but did not suggest that he would depute someone in his absence to host the event. India faced a diplomatic storm as several Gulf region countries summoned Ambassadors and conveyed their concern about growing “extremism and hatred” the comments of Ms. Sharma and Mr. Jindal conveyed. Moreover, OIC issued a “strong condemnation” of what it called “abuses by an official of the ruling party of India (BJP)”, highlighting its previous decisions to ban hijabs at educational institutions in Karnataka and violence against minorities.

Delhi Police register FIRs against Sharma, Jindal, Owaisi for inciting people on divisive lines New Delhi: Delhi Police have registered First Information Reports (FIRs) against former BJP spokespersons Nupur Sharma and Naveen Kumar Jindal, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, controversial priest Yati Narsinghanand and others for allegedly posting and sharing messages on social media against the maintenance of public tranquility and inciting people on divisive lines, officials said on Thursday. The FIRs were registered after an analysis of social media, they said. “The cases have been registered against those who were posting and sharing messages against the maintenance of public tranquility and were inciting people on the basis of divisive lines,” a senior police officer said. Delhi Police have registered FIRs against the four and others for allegedly posting and sharing messages on social media against the maintenance of public tranquility and inciting people on divisive lines. The cases have been registered under sec-

Asaduddin Owaisi tions 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot), 295 (injuring or defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class), 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code, he said.

One case has been registered against Sharma and another against multiple social media entities, including Owaisi, Jindal, Narsinghanand, Shadab Chauhan, Saba Naqvi, Maulana Mufti Nadeem, Abdur Rehman and Gulzar Ansari, based on the analysis, the officer said. Notices will be sent to the social media intermediaries for the details, he added. “We have registered 2 FIRs under appropriate sections on the basis of social media analysis against those trying to disrupt public tranquility & inciting people on divisive lines. One pertains to Ms Nupur Sharma & other against multiple social media entities,” Delhi Police tweeted. “Even as Notices are being sent to social media intermediaries for details of those behind these accounts/entities, #DelhiPolice appeals to everyone to desist from posting anything that may disrupt social and communal harmony,” it added. The FIRs have been registered by the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic

Operation (IFSO) unit of the Special Cell, police said. On Wednesday, police had said the unit will investigate the roles of various social media entities in promoting false and wrong information with an intention to create unrest on the cyber space, that have ramifications on the physical space thereby compromising with the social fabric of the country. Earlier, Delhi Police had provided security to Sharma and her family after an FIR was registered on a complaint that she was getting death threats over her controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad. She had requested the police to provide security citing harassment and threats she had been receiving. The BJP on Sunday had suspended Sharma and expelled its Delhi unit media head Jindal as the row over their alleged derogatory remarks against Prophet Mohammad escalated with protests from many Muslim countries.

Five more held for murder of international kabaddi player in Punjab

Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Police on Sunday said it has arrested five more persons, including two shooters, in connection with the high-profile murder case of international kabaddi player Sandeep Singh, taking the total arrests to nine. Senior Superintendent of Police, Jalandhar Rural, Swapan Sharma said those arrested have been identified as Harwinder Singh of Bulandshahr (Uttar Pradesh), Vikas Malhe of Guru-

gram, Sachin Dhaulia of Alwar (Rajasthan), Manjot Kaur of Sangrur (Punjab), and Yadwinder Singh of Pilibhit (Uttar Pradesh). The police have recovered seven pistols, including five foreignmade .30 bore pistols and two .315 country-made pistols, and three vehicles from their possession. Sandeep Singh was shot dead during a match in Mallian village in Jalandhar district on March 14.

The SSP said Harwinder Singh was the main coordinator in the killing, who also provided logistics support. He said Malhe, who was nabbed from Haryana’s Faridabad, was the main shooter. During investigation, he confessed his role in two murder cases in Punjab, which were previously not known to the police. Sharma said Dhaulia and Manjot Kaur were arrested for harbouring members of Kaushal-Daggar

gang and providing them safe passage. In the last three weeks, police have identified and raided 18 locations used as hideouts by this gang and nominated several persons in this case, he added. The SSP said the fifth accused, Yadwinder Singh, who is a close associate of Jujhar Singh, was working as a mediator among gang members. Sandeep Singh

Sikhs should learn use of modern weapons: Akal Takht Jathedar Amritsar (IANS): Expressing concern over rise in Christianity and drug abuse in Punjab, Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh, during his customary address on Monday to the Sikh community from the Akal Takht’s podium to mark the 38th anniversary of ‘Operation Bluestar’, said every Sikh should learn the use of modern weapons. Expressing concern over the massive buildup of security in the city ahead of the anniversary of Operation Bluestar, the Akal

Takht Jathedar said the Sikhs don’t need security. “We should focus on setting up shooting ranges to get training in weapons. The others are getting training in weapons illegally,” said the Jathedar, amidst pro-Khalistan slogans. He said: “It is also high time for the Sikh organisations to propagate Sikhism,” noting that villages along the Indo-Pakistan border areas have been seeing a rise in conversion to Christianity and mushrooming of churches.

Ex-Punjab Congress minister held for alleged corruption

Chandigarh (IANS): Just ahead of the visit of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to Punjab, the Vigilance Bureau on Tuesday arrested former minister Sadhu Singh Dharamsot under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Dharamsot, who was the Forest Minister in the previous Congress government led by Captain Amarinder Singh, is accused of being involved in illegal felling of over 25,000 trees. Acting on the interrogation of earlier arrested Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Guramanpreet Singh and contractor Hummy, police took Dharamsot into custody for the alleged wrongdoings in the Forest Department. The former minister allegedly had links with the arrested forest officials. Along with him, a local journalist, Kamaljit

Sadhu Singh Dharamsot Singh, who was allegedly working as an aide, was also arrested.

Thousands of devotees early in the morning thronged the Akal Takht -- the highest temporal seat of Sikh religion -- to attend the ‘bhog’ ceremony of religious prayers that began on June 4. The prayers were to mark the anniversary of ‘Operation Bluestar’ that was carried out in June 1984 by the Army to flush out heavily armed militants from inside the Golden Temple complex. The Akal Takht Jathedar and Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC)

officials honoured the families of those who were killed during ‘Operation Bluestar’. There was heavy barricading by police around all entry points to the Golden Temple. During the event, posters of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and Khalistani flags were seen inside the Golden Temple complex. A large number of people carried banners and placards saying “Khalistan Zindabad” and raised pro-Khalistan slogans during the event.

BJP fields Kewal Singh Dhillon for Sangrur Lok Sabha by-poll

New Delhi (IANS): The BJP on Monday announced Kewal Singh Dhillon as its party’s candidate for the Sangrur Lok Sabha bypoll. In a statement, BJP national General Secretary Arun Singh said, “The BJP Central Election Committee has approved one name for the Lok Sabha by-poll in Punjab.” Dhillon is a two-term MLA on the Congress ticket. The by-poll was necessitated after Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann resigned from the Lok Sabha. Mann won twice - in 2014 and 2019 - from Sangrur Lok Sabha constituency. June 6 is the last day of filing of nomination for by-poll. The polling will be held on June 23 and counting of votes will take place on June 26.

AAP govt in Punjab to present its first budget on June 27

Chandigarh (IANS): The Punjab Cabinet led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday approved summoning of the budget session of the 16th Vidhan Sabha from June 24 with the laying of the budget - the first of the AAP government - on June 27. A decision in this regard was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Mann here. The Chief Minister’s Office said the Cabinet gave the nod for promulgation of the session from June 24 with obituary references and motion of thanks on the Governor’s Ad-

dress, followed by a discussion on it. The Finance Minister will present the budget for 2022-23 on June 27 and the general discussion on the budget will take place thereafter. The report of the Comptroller and Auditor General for 2018-19 and 201920 along with Financial and Appropriation Accounts for 2019-20 and 2020-21 will also be tabled during the session. In order to save natural resources in terms of groundwater, besides improving soil health and generating additional income for

the farmers, the Cabinet also gave the green signal for providing the minimum support price (MSP) on summer moong at Rs 7,275 per quintal for 2022-23 by Markfed, the state nodal agency for the purchase of crops. It was also decided to provide viability gap funding to the agency at the rate of Rs 1,875 per quintal, amounting to nearly Rs 66.56 crore [1 crore = 10 million]. During the current season, moong is being sown on about 95,000 acres with an expected yield of five quintal per acre. This

will help in sowing short duration varieties of paddy which is expected to save 10-20 per cent of underground water thereby conserving the natural resources. In a much-needed succour to street vendors hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Cabinet also decided to waive stamp duty being levied on executing the loan or hypothecation agreement up to Rs 50,000 (third tranche loan) for the street vendors under PM Street Vendor’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) scheme.

Politicians share grief with Sidhu Moose Wala’s parents

Chandigarh (IANS): Patiala MP and former External Affairs Minister Preneet Kaur on Tuesday visited the house of slain Punjabi singer Shubhdeep Singh, popularly known as Sidhu Moose Wala, and shared her condolences with the family. “The passing away of such a promising life is very saddening and unfortunate. As a mother myself I can feel the pain and anguish of the parents and today, I have come here to share their pain,” she said while interacting with the media. “We can’t bring him back, but I urge the government of Punjab to work with the central agencies

to catch the murderers at the earliest to provide some healing to the family,” Kaur, wife of former chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh, said. She told the media in response to a question: “While the death of the singer is very unfortunate and heartbreaking it could have been avoided had the Aam Aadmi Party government not taken the security back and then promoted it all over the media for cheap PR.” She said: “I am here as an individual not as a politician or from any political party, I am here as Preneet Kaur and also as the wife of Captain Amarinder Singh who could not come here due

Properly equipped F-150 Lightning pickups can now haul an extra 235 pounds for a total 2,235 pounds of maximum available hauling capability. “I have been very excited for this truck ever since it debuted a year ago. Auto review by Veeno Dewan. The much-loved Honda Odyssey has always been the Minivan to beat in this sector and for 2022, the Honda Odyssey is the fifth generation of this classic Minivan –that can still seat 7-8 passengers. After a facelift for the 2021 model year, the Odyssey has only a few changes for 2022: a new color called Radiant Red Metallic is on offer and the integrated vacuum cleaner option has been discontinued. Impressively Honda’s Sensing Safety Suite is now standard kit on the Odyssey across the Model range and includes Collision Mitigation Braking System with Forward Collision Warning, Road Departure Mitigation with Lane Keeping Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control. The interior gains a new instrument panel with a cool push button gear selector system. ¬there is also a funky Display Audio system with Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™. Meanwhile the new CabinControl app, allows rear seat passengers to have control of certain cabin functions via their smartphones. ¬ It’s got some cool new features like CabinWatch and CabinTalk; a camera placed on the interior roof allows you to check up on your passengers from the infotainment screen, as well as speak loudly and clearly with the third-row passengers. The single engine choice is Honda’s refined 3.5-liter SOHC direct-injected i-VTEC® V6 engine, with 280 horsepower and with torque at 262 lb/ft. A nine-speed automatic transmission is standard on all trim levels except the top line touring, which has the 10-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifters. Unlike its competitors, the Odyssey isn’t available with all-wheel drive. Honda offers the Odyssey in four models, down from six previously. There is the: EX-RES Auto, EX-L Navi Auto, EX-L RES Auto and the top Touring model as tested. Canadian MSRP ranges from $43,605 - $54,805. As standard features include Wireless Charging Pad, and Navigation and several driver assistances features, such as: power-adjustable front seats (8-way for the driver, 4-way for the passenger), and active noise cancellation. The top trim Touring version as tested arrives with 11-speaker Surround Sound Display & Controls, 8.0-inch Colour Touchscreen, Voice Activating System Audio, Phone, Navigation, Climate Control, Apple Carplay, Android Auto, USB, Bluetooth, AM/FM, Satellite Radio,

2022 Honda Odyssey Minivan

Still the benchmark for Minivans! Hard Drive, Rear Entertainment System, HDMI, Wireless Headphones, and In-car WiFi Network. The Touring version also offers premium features and technologies, including: 19-inch wheels. Leather seats, CabinWatch™ day/night video monitor, Cabin- Talk™ in-car PA system, 4G LTE in-car Wi-Fi, new Rear Entertainment System (RES) with Blu-ray and streaming video, hands-free power tailgate, ventilated front seats, and LED accent lighting. Interior space and versatility continues to be a hallmark of the 2022 Odyssey with twin side doors and a low step-in height to allow

easy access. The Magic Slide 2nd-row seats™ is an excellent feature and offers multiple seating options. ¬The second-row middle seat are removable and with an Easy Access mode allows the outboard seats to slide laterally through five selectable positions, creating more access and variable seating options. ¬ The new Super mode seating option allows for excellent walk-in access to the third row, while Wide Mode and :Buddy: allows for the most room and flexibility. With the rearmost row upright, there’s 929 Litres of cargo space behind the hatch, stowing the third-row results in 2,452 L of cargo room. While the second-

25 row seats don’t fold into the floor, removing them from the Touring trim offers 3,973 L of total space. ¬ The 2022 Honda Odyssey offer top class performance and fuel economy ratings. Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) rates it at, 12.2 L/100 km in the city, 8.5 on the highway, and 10.6 combined. You can thank the smooth 10-speed automatic transmission, for making more use of the engines power and helping to improve fuel economy. As usual its a quiet, comfortable, very pleasant experience driving the Odyssey. However, it is a large vehicle to park, but the big windows, high driving position and a rear backup camera does help in this regard. I was to say the least, extremely impressed by the Honda Odyssey. It is good- looking, roomy, plush, and very well-equipped with many luxury touches, plus a flexible cabin and good safety. Not much negative; It can get expensive in the upper trim models and removing the heavy second-row seats requires some muscle power. Also, that integrated vacuum cleaner will be sorely missed by busy families! The Honda Odyssey is the Minivan with the best reputation in this sector and deserves your attention if a large family hauler is what you need. ¬ ¬ It is a tempting buy and highly recommended. 2022 Honda Odyssey (MSRP) starting at $43,605 - $54,805 Touring Edition as tested: $54,805. CLI Rises in First Quarter 2022

THE BCREA Commercial Leading Indicator (CLI) rose to 154 from 150 in the first quarter of 2022, recovering most of the ground lost over the prior two quarters. Compared to the same time in 2021, the index was up by 3.4 per cent. It is important to note that while the Cana-

dian economy generally continues to recover strongly, the environment for commercial real estate remains highly abnormal and uncertain. Although the CLI was designed to interpret economic and office employment growth as positive indicators for commercial real estate demand, the recent strong growth of these indicators may not translate as readily into improved conditions in the commercial real estate market relative to the pre-pandemic period. The CLI rose in the first quarter almost entirely due to improvements in the economic activity component of the index, while the financial component contributed only slightly and the employment component was essen-

tially flat. The economic activity index was driven upwards by rising wholesale trade and manufacturing sales, whereas retail sales, although historically elevated, were largely flat from the prior quarter. Improving manufacturing sales were concentrated among non-durable goods such as food and beverages, whereas wholesale trade was especially strong for building and machinery materials as the province continues to experience a boom in the number of projects under construction. Although COVID-19 lockdowns have eased, supply chain obstacles and the war in Ukraine continue to generate instability and rising prices which contributed to rising sales figures. The small increase in the financial component of the index was driven by a decrease in the spread between government and corporate borrowing rates. This spread on 3-month bonds fell from 18 to 10 basis points in the first quarter amid generally rising bond yields. The spread is important as it indicates the ease with which the private sector can borrow relative to government, which is a driver of commercial real estate activity. REIT prices fell slightly since last quarter, which dampened the financial component of the index. Finally, the employment component of the index was essentially flat with a four thousand job decline in manufacturing employment completely offsetting an equivalent increase in office (finance, insurance, and real estate) employment.

Quebec set to assist Alzheimer’s patients

QUEBEC is proposing progressive legislation for Alzheimer’s patients. It’s time for other Canadian provinces and American states to show similar humanity. Québec’s Health Minister, Christian Dubé, has tabled Bill 38 that would allow patients with severe Alzheimer’s disease to receive an assisted death by allowing written consent to be given before they are mentally and physically incapable of doing so. Under the proposed rules, a doctor would have to be certain that the patient was requesting death without pressure from any other people. Moreover, patients would be able to reverse this request at any time including at the time of the procedure. To provide extra precaution, the patient must choose a trusted third party to act on their behalf at the appropriate time. As long-time readers know, this column has been fighting for a more commonsense approach to MAID (medical assistance in dying) for years. Current laws across North America ignore so much suffering. The Canadian law is so poorly conceived that it is hard to imagine how it has lasted so long without revision. It allows Alzheimer’s patients to ask for MAID while being mentally coherent and to sign the needed legal documents. But as the disease progresses and patients lose capacity, the request become void. Any reasonable person would acknowledge the inadequacy. Alzheimer’s patients need an advanced directive or an advance request for MAID that will be legally valid after their health has deteriorated. Readers can understand the frustration for Alzheimer’s patients who wish to access MAID. But despite extensive efforts by the medical community and advocates, Canada’s elected Members of Parliament and Senators have not resolved the issue. Those having read this column for years may recall the suggestions that the Government of Canada be replaced by taxicab drivers, garbage collectors, or veterinarians! The people in these professions have ample common sense. They would change the law in 24 hours. But it is not only politicians that have fought against access to MAID for Alzheimer’s patients. Ethicists, moralists, and religious people who believe that “only God can decide on life and death” are also responsible. While 80 percent of the population agrees with proposed changes to the legislation, the minority conspire to block access by any and all. Yet the concerns of this minority can be addressed. First, to be clear, MAID is only an option for those who actively request it. It cannot be imposed on anyone. But if those who are opposed would like to do so, they are free to sign an affidavit stating that they wish never to participate in MAID. But instead, they blow bullhorns. And those in need of assistance languish. There is something lost in today’s digital society when decisionmakers lack connection to the people. Gone are the days when readers responded to a call for better legislation with thousands upon thousands of handwritten letters. But it is impossible to forget reading those personal stories of anguish on stationary where tear marks lingered. And politicians had to respond when one such campaign, for the legaliza-

tion of heroin to ease the pain of terminal cancer patients, resulted in 40,000 letters on the health minister’s desk. Now it’s time for the rest of Canada to replicate this same Quebec legislation. Congratulations to Québec’s Minister of Health, Christian Dubé and to Dying with Dignity Canada for continuing efforts to achieve access to MAID. For Alzheimer’s patience wishing MAID, let’s facilitate the dignity of a peaceful end of life, just as the law now allows for others.
