Western medicine values autonomous decision-making that puts advanced care planning into the hands of the individual.

Participants had the opportunity to talk with Joshi and his research team in an informal setting about their values, be liefs and life experiences when it comes to serious or terminal illness, taking the perspective of both patients and family

The feedback and lived experiences Joshi and his team collected from study partici pants can also contribute to discussions about how to provide culturally appro priate care, and potentially develop new supplementary tools to the Serious Illness Conversation Guide, adds Joshi.

“Ourmembers.research has shown that culture mat

ters when it comes to how and when in dividuals are prepared to talk about death and dying,” says Joshi.

* The hope is that learnings from this study can potentially develop new tools to supplement advanced care planning guides to help raise awareness and im prove patient care in the community.

In the South Asian community, physicians are typically seen as authority figures whose word should be taken at face val ue. Decisions about advanced care plan

“With more cultural awareness, we can increase the skill set of health care prac titioners and improve patient care,” says Joshi. “Conducting this research has al ready helped me build trust with my pa tients in my current practice.”

END-OF-LIFE care is never an easy top ic of conversation. For people of South Asian descent, discussions about death and dying can also carry with them cul tural norms and family traditions that dif fer from those of mainstream Western cultures, which the health care system in British Columbia is largely built upon.

Vancouver Coastal Health Research Insti tute (VCHRI) researcher Dr. Amrish Joshi has thought deeply on the topic, both as someone of South Asian descent and as a community palliative physician with the Richmond Integrated Hospice Palliative Care Program.

Culturally appropriate language can bridge barriers and optimize care In Greater Vancouver, the South Asian community represents one quarter of all visible minorities. While many prefer to make family-based decisions, they of ten refrain from engaging in discussions about serious illness and death, both of which are essential to planning for endof-life care, says Joshi. This can prevent some families from taking full advantage of available advanced care services.

For his research study, Joshi and his team introduced study participants to the Se rious Illness Conversation Guide, a re search-based communication tool that explores Western notions of autonomous decision-making surrounding advanced care planning. While not a replacement for culturally sensitive care, researchers believe that exposure to the guide could help people of South Asian origin navigate the Western advanced care system.

Joshi found that participants who had only been in the country for a couple of months were more reluctant to speak on the subject, versus individuals who have lived in Canada for many years.

* The study involved five focus groups with 18 South Asian participants from the gen eral public, and was coordinated with two nurses of Filipino and Chinese descent.

A burning vehicle believed to be associated to the shooting was located in the 3300-block of Ptarmigan Place in Whistler.

ACCORDING to The Abbotsford News’ Vikki Hopes, Harpreet (Harb) Dhaliwal’s brother, Barinder (Brian) “Shrek” Dhaliwal, was the suspected target of a drive-by shooting in 2011 at a home on Bradner Road and was an associate of the Bacon brothers. QUITE obviously, the gang world already knew that Gursimran Sahota was involved in Sunday’s incident and had been arrested because the story “Karman Grewal shot and killed at Vancouver International Airport (with videos) (Monday update)” (dated May 9, 2021) on our website had started trending on Sunday (July 24).

One of the posts was under the heading: “Rest Easy Meninder ThereDhaliwal.”was also a graphic video showing the victims lying on the ground in blood on either side of a white vehicle.

In May 2021, the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia (CFSEU-BC) on Tuesday issued a public warning regarding 11 individuals, including brothers Barinder and Meninder Dhaliwal, involved in the Lower Mainland Gang Conflict. It said that these individuals posed a significant threat to the public.

“Anyone who was in the area of Sundial Crescent or Blueberry Drive, where the burning vehicle was located, between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. with dash camera footage was asked to contact IHIT immediately

Meninder Dhaliwal’s brother, Harpreet Singh Dhaliwal, 31, was shot and killed on April 17, 2021, outside Cardero’s restaurant near Coal Harbour Quay and Cardero Street in Vancouver. His killer, Francois Joseph Gauthier, 53, who was initially charged with first-degree murder, pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of second-degree murder in B.C. Supreme Court last month and was sentenced to life in prison with no parole eligibility for 20 Harpreetyears. In September 2012, there was another drive-by shooting in which a man got shot in the arm. Following that incident, police installed video surveillance cameras on Bradner Road near the home.

The CFSEU-BC said that these individuals were known to police and had been connected to the spike in violence at the time. Police believe that anyone with them or in their proximity could be putting themselves at risk.

Prevention of Heat Stress: Employers

WorkSafeBC encourages employers to engage their workers early in the process so they un derstand the risks, and participate in the as sessment and control of those risks.

* Rotate work activities or use additional work ers to reduce exposure.

Under its long-term vision, Nissan Ambition 2030, Nissan is working to develop vehicle control technology aimed to sig nificantly reduce accidents by utilizing next-generation LI DAR technology. Nissan believes that in the upcoming era of autonomous driving, driver-assistance technology that can avoid highly complex accidents will be essential. Nissan aims to complete the development of its ground truth perception technology by the mid-2020s. It will first be available on select new models, and on virtually every new model by fiscal year 2030.

YOKOHAMA, JAPAN: Nissan recently announced a new driv er-assistance technology, which is currently in-development, that utilizes highly accurate, real-time information about the vehicle’s surrounding environment to dramatically enhance collision avoidance. At a Nissan facility here, a test vehicle was used to demonstrate how this technology can automati cally perform collision-avoidance maneuvers.

Nissan’s “ground truth perception” technology fuses informa tion from next-generation high-performance LIDAR, radar and cameras. The technology can detect the shape and distance of objects, as well as the structure of the area surrounding the vehicle, in real time with a high degree of accuracy. Utilizing this information, it is possible for the vehicle to instantly ana lyze the current situation, judge and automatically perform required collision-avoidance operations. This technology can also detect slowed traffic and road obstacles in the distance and execute lane changes accordingly. Importantly, the tech nology can also provide increased support to drivers in areas where detailed map information is not available.

Mazda is proud to add this top achievement to our list of accolades from IIHS, including all-tested Mazda vehicles earning the IIHS 2022 TOP SAFETY PICK+, the highest award in safety. When equipped with optional front crash prevention technology, the 2022 Maz da3, Mazda3 Sport, and CX-30 all receive the highest safety designation available from IIHS. The 2022 CX-5 and CX-9 also receive the In stitute’s top award with standard equipment. The IIHS is an independent, non-governmen tal safety-testing organization, funded by the insurance industry. HELEN Keller, the disability rights advocate who lost her sight and hearing at 19 months of age, famously warned of “having sight but no vision”. Hers was a metaphor on liv ing. But what happens to our eyesight as we age? And how common is it to have sight, but poor vision?

COMMON SENSE HEALTH – W. GIFFORD-JONES, MD AND DIANA GIFFORD-JONES

Saturday, July 30, 2022 | Indo-Canadian Voice Main 35

When is the right time to hang up the car keys?

Dr. Ken Walker (Gifford-Jones) is a graduate of the University of Toronto and The Harvard Medical School. He trained in general surgery at the Strong Memorial Hospital, University of Rochester, Montreal General Hospital, McGill University and in Gynecology at Harvard.

The final problem for the aging eye is photo receptors in the retina. These cells transmit the image of an upcoming car to the brain. Older adults have lost one-third of these Whatcells. can you do to decrease the hazards of driving at night? Mother urged us to eat our carrots to maintain good vision and she was partly right. Carrots are rich in vitamin A needed to regenerate rhodopsin.

There’s no sure way to stop macular degen eration. Some authorities advise people to take a daily supplement containing lutein, a macular pigment based on research show ing that this antioxidant helps to slow down this disease. Others say eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables makes more sense. Cataract surgery can improve night vision. A sure way to survive night driving is to be realistic about your ability to see well in the dark. Good sense dictates that as visual acu ity decreases, it’s prudent not to drive after Helensunset.Keller embodied the triumph of per severance over tragedy. She had youth and a good teacher on her side. There is honour, too, in accepting when you have sight but poor vision, and don’t get behind the wheel.

More specifically, how do we know when we need to make changes in our lives because we are not seeing as well as we used to? Driving, for example, is an inten sive visual undertaking. But glare sensitivity and reductions in visual field are significant predictors of involvement in a crash. No amount of wisdom will help in the seconds before an accident you did not see coming. Macular degeneration is a leading cause of driving accidents involving seniors. It’s also the main reason for being classified as le gally blind for those over 55 years of age.

Older drivers are also unable to adapt as quickly to changes in intensity of light. On occasion we’ve all complained, “Why didn’t that idiot turn off the high beams?”

In this situation an aging iris contracts more slowly to the blazing light. But once the car has passed, it’s also slow in dilating to pro vide more light for the dark road ahead. A light pigment called rhodopsin, that helps adjust to night vision, also decreases as we Today, age.

most people are aware of the risk of developing cataracts in the lens in later years. The less transparent lens decreases the amount of light striking the retina and worsens night driving.

The macula is a pin-sized area in the retina at the back of the eye that transmits images to the brain. Like a rifle bullet, it can zero in on small-sized distant objects. When the macula develops degenerative changes, nighttime driving becomes especially haz Otherardous.changes

occur in the eye as we age. Like other parts of the body, the eyelids be gin to droop providing less peripheral vision. The pigmented iris that makes us brown or blue-eyed involve tiny muscles that fail to increase the size of the pupil to let more light strike the retina. This loss of vision is not detectable during the day. But driving a car with droopy eyelids and small pupils has the same effect as wearing sunglasses while driving at night.
