unny man Lee Navlen, who grew up in Livingston and now resides in South Orange, has added book author to his impressive belt, which already boasts stand-up comedian, and awardwinning “Goodstein” webisode producer and writer, as well as Fox news and TV writer. According to Lee, who wrote the story during COVID, some characters in his book called, “Secretary of the City,” are loosely based on people he’s met throughout his career. The humorous story is described as “an ambitious, fastpaced, and light-hearted look at the very rich and the very famous.” In the novel, Slacker Liz is happy enough just being a secretary to a Manhattan billionaire and his entitled wife, but when an accident happens, and Liz gets involved in the coverup, lives around her begin to crumble. The book is available wherever books are sold.

n a nail-biter double overtime shootout, the Montclair Kimberley Academy Field Hockey team beat The Hun School of Princeton, 2-1, taking the NJ Prep state championship title for the third time in a row. Sophomore Maggie Murphy scored the Cougar’s only regulation goal in the second quarter, with an assist from senior captain Mimi Temkin. Goalie Malia Cesareo made seven saves on goal, two in the shootout. Following two 10-minute overtime periods, MKA took

the win 3-2 after a set of five 1-on-1 shootouts, with goals made by Senior Lucy Osterberg, sophomore Addie Goldstein, and Temkin. Team captain Mimi Temkin, of Montclair said, “This win was especially exciting because we beat a team that typically plays in A tournaments. The tournament organizers combined the A (larger schools) and B (smaller schools) into one tournament this year, and the fact that we were able to win, means we did so at a higher level than ever before.”

Livingston Resident Wins “The Price is Right” Showcase

He especially likes “The Price is Right.” So, it wasn’t surprising that while on vacation in California, he, his wife Michelle, and son Justin, attended a taping of the show. What was surprising, however, was that Steven won the showcase! During the first taping, Steven wasn’t picked to go on stage, but the family decided to stay for the second taping, where to his surprise, Steven’s name was called, “to come on down.” He said, “The whole experience was surreal, and went by in a blur. There I was shaking hands with Drew Carey.” Upon his arrival home, Steven kept quiet about the win. When the episode aired a few months later, he had some friends over to watch and celebrate. Steven said it was surreal seeing himself on television, and that he enjoyed his “15 minutes of fame.”

Mount Soccer Makes History with Its First-Ever State Sectional Title, 2-1, Over Top-Seeded IHA

he Mount Soccer (20-2) edged top-seeded IHA, 2-1, in the NJSIAA NonPublic A, North State Sectional Final Tuesday afternoon, on the Blue Eagles’ home turf in Washington Township to take home its first-ever State Sectional Championship. Freshman outside midfielder Sophia Giordano scored the first goal with approximately 30:00 remaining in the second half, with an assist from sophomore forward Gianna Camporeale (from Caldwell). Senior center mid Eliza Haghighi scored the eventual winning goal with a header from freshman defender Aanya Davitt with 9:00 remaining in the game. Senior goalie Frankie Mansfield (from North Caldwell) was busy in net with 8 saves. “This history-making win over IHA has been so exciting. The girls have worked so hard and are so deserving of this State Sectional Title.” says Mount Head Soccer Coach Angelo Del Vecchio. “This win has been a long time coming and is what the Mount Soccer program has been built for. The success is the culmination of years and years of Mount coaches and players, where each has been a brick in the team’s foundation. We came close to winning a few times, but this is our first sectional win. This 2023 team will be part of Mount Soccer history forever.”

Local Man Hosts “Torah Smash! The Podcast for Nerdy Jews”

arak Malkin of West Orange has merged his two favorite things to talk about – Judaism and pop culture to create a podcast called, “Torah Smash! The Podcast for Nerdy Jews,” which he hosts with two others, Ethan Lane Miller, a camp director in Texas, and Rabbi David Young, a congregational rabbi in Chicago who goes by the moniker “RDY,” and runs a Dungeons and Dragons game for rabbis on the side. They produce a 30–45-minute episode every two weeks and passed their first-year mark in May. Malkin says that each show is a beautiful collision between Judaism and “Nerd Culture.” Such as identifying the traits of Spider-Man that make him a mensch or discussing which Star Trek species could be Jewish. Malkin said he was looking for a podcast like this and couldn’t find one, so he created his own. The podcast is available in all podcast locations, or via the website: torahsmash.com

Livingston High School Teen Publishes First Book

ebastian Volante, a senior at Livingston High School, with a burgeoning thrifting business, has taken his passion for entrepreneurship to a new level by writing a book titled, “Ella the Ice Cream Entrepreneur.” In the story, geared to children ages 6-12, a disappointing trip to the local ice cream parlor leads to Ella starting her own business. Sebastian says that while it’s not a step-by-step guide, it shows how creativity, problem-solving, and determination help Ella along her entrepreneurial journey, making it a great motivation for any child who wants to learn about starting a business and a substantial tool for teachers. Sebastian credits participating in the TREP$ program in elementary school, then serving as a mentor for the program later on, as inspiration for writing the book. He says he would like to expand the book into a series. Sebastian hopes the book encourages children to get involved in entrepreneurship. The book is available on Amazon.

is Making a Difference–One Dumpling at a Time

Nancy Loo of Montclair is bringing people together through food, conversation, inclusion, and donation – both literally through dumplings and diplomacy, and through her Benefit Corporation enterprise called Dumpling Diplomacy, which is a socially responsible company that uses business as a force for good. She also provides community members with usable cooking skills and volunteer endeavors, including her staff of neurodiverse, student, and community volunteers. The dumpling aficionado says she learned to cook dumplings later in life and has made it her mission to teach the cooking skill while encouraging people by example to give back and be inclusive. Through her offerings, she creates many different types of dumplings and other Asian- and Asian Americaninspired dishes.

Selections include international classics, such as hot and sour soup, chicken noodle soup, Greek avgolemono, and dumplings. Participants can either dine in or pick up via online ordering. Guests who eat in can dine at their own pace and mingle with the other patrons. As far as payment goes, all Nancy asks is “that this kindness received be paid forward with a smile, by being kind to yourself, by volunteering, or by making a tax-deductible donation.” She says, “These events have great equalizing effects where guests who normally would not interact have a chance to meet and talk about themselves, current events, town issues, and more.” Nancy also runs a Facebook group called Essex Asian Table (EAT), an incubator pilot program called Milk and Cookies, and a book club called Chaat and Chat, which is “fueled by snacks and conversation.”

Livingston Mom Gives Back to Cooperman Barnabas

THROUGH ONGOING TOY DRIVES BY JACKIE SCHATELL

Julie Seborowski of Livingston has been running ongoing toy drives to benefit Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center since 2021, when her son JJ, now 6, was in and out of the hospital several times that year, being monitored for epilepsy. She says that the Child Life team did a tremendous job helping JJ. They were there to help get him through an MRI without sedation, and the “arduous” removal of leeds on his head after his EEGs. To comfort JJ, they came to his room to do arts and crafts and play instruments with him. “The Child Life Service Team was absolutely incredible with my son during all of his stays. They were always there to brighten his spirit, so we wanted to give back to them,” she says. Julie held two toy drives for the hospital that year, one in the summer, and one during the winter holidays. She held a few more in 2022, and 2023, many of which were largely supported by the local community through the town Facebook pages; her son’s school, Burnet Hill, which also renewed a tradition of making holiday cards for the children in the hospital; colleagues in her Coldwell Banker office; and friends and family. The toy drives have enhanced the playroom on the Cooperman Barnabas pediatric floor, which is run by Child Life Services, and the Pediatric Emergency Room, which serves babies up to people aged 21.

Julie says, “When children go into the Emergency Room, they are frightened, so receiving a toy when they’re in there, really makes a world of a difference. It’s a distraction and helps comfort them. In addition, they get to take the toy home.” She adds, “Children who play with the toys in the playroom on the Pediatric floor get to take some of the toys back to their room during their hospital stay.” To support the drives, people either buy toys and drop them at Julie’s home, or she arranges to pick them up. She also collects money and does large shopping excursions for the hospital. “My son absolutely loves doing this,” she says. Right now, through December 20th, Julie is running a toy drive benefiting The Cooperman Barnabas Pediatric Emergency Room. She is requesting new, unwrapped toys and games for infants through people aged 21. “If you don’t have the time to shop, no problem. While this Toy Drive ends in December, Julie likes to think of this as an ongoing endeavor, and is always happy to collect for the hospital. Art Exhibit and Auction for a Good Cause

An art exhibit and auction, titled “Freedom is Journey II,” is being held to raise funds for The Friends of the Howe House, a nonprofit organization committed to preserving Montclair’s historic James Howe house. Wine and cheese will be served. All of the artwork will be on display and for sale at the event and throughout the month. Artists are invited to donate their work (paintings, photos, sculptures and more), which represents their interpretations of “Freedom is a Journey.” Howe was an enslaved man who was freed in 1817 and was willed the house by Nathanial Crane. As one of the oldest standing buildings owned by an African American, this house tells the story of freedom and slavery, the importance of homeownership, the development of African American communities in the United States, and the role of African Americans in the growth of towns like Montclair. Currently, the house stands as a monument to African American history, serving as a gathering place for education, community, and honest reflection on the past, present, and future of African American experiences in New Jersey and across the nation.

Cram a Cruiser FOOD DRIVES

The West Caldwell Police Department will be holding a few more Cram a Cruiser events before the holiday season to help refill supplies at the Caldwell Food Pantry, which is low on supplies. While donations can always be made in-person at 24 Smull Avenue, they can also be made during the Cram a Cruiser events. Items needed include: tuna/chicken in a can, peanut butter and jelly, mac and cheese, snacks for kids, granola bars, rice/black beans, cereal, canned fruit, pasta sauce, paper towels, toilet paper, dish soap, laundry soap, personal needs items, and grocery store gift cards. Ecstatic Expectancy Harmonium Choral Society December Concert

Harmonium will open its 45th anniversary season with Ecstatic Expectancy, featuring music that expresses eager anticipation, including a comparison of Durante’s Magnificat of 1746 with two premieres of Magnificat by contemporary American women composers, Dale Trumbore and Jessica French. They will be accompanied by string quartet, organ, handbells and piano and will feature Harmonium’s outstanding Chamber Singers. Included in the concert are new works by Mark Miller, Reena Esmail, and Zanaida Robles, and David Thomson’s whimsical setting of A.A. Milne’s King John’s Christmas. Composer Thomson lives in Chatham and also sings in Harmonium.

“I am so excited to premiere Dale Trumbore’s Magnificat on the East Coast” says Artistic Director Anne Matlack, “because she won Harmonium’s High School Choral Composition Contest in 2005 as a senior at Chatham High School and is now an award-winning LA-based composer. Camuso Holiday Attraction is Back AND BETTER THAN EVER THIS DECEMBER!

The renowned Camuso holiday display, a Livingston Christmas tradition, will grace the oval by Livingston High School for its 13th year this December. Originally owned by machinist Ernie Camuso, the animated robotic figures captivated visitors at his Burnett Hill road home for decades. Donated to the town after his passing, the display, now repaired and expanded, features new additions like a train, a first aid squad scene, and a poinsettia farm, enclosed by a new attractive fence. In addition, children will love looking for the Elf on the Shelf hidden somewhere in the display, with his location changing every night.

Opening on December 2nd, festivities commence with the Livingston Starliners Dance Team at 6:30pm, a lighting ceremony at 7pm, and a Gazebo choir quartet. The event also boasts a gingerbread bouncy house, a trackless train, a petting zoo, cookies and hot chocolate. On December 9th, at 6:30pm, UNICO is sponsoring a night with Santa and his elf at the Gazebo. December 16th sees a special Santa appearance and photo opportunities for the Livingston Committee for Disabilities from 4:30-6:30pm, followed by Clydesdale horses and wagon rides for families, a petting zoo and pony rides. At 7pm, the Livingston Fire Department and First Aid Squad is hosting a Craft Night featuring ornament-making, Santa, and hot chocolate.

Lead Elf Tom Cooney and a team of 35 residents maintain the display throughout the year, funded by corporate sponsorships, and the sale of $20 stockings, emblazoned with purchasers’ names and added to the display—last year selling 250-300. A collection box, inspired by Ernie’s commitment to the

Cooperman Barnabas Burn Foundation, raised over $3,000 last year, and will be back at the display this December. Whether a first-time visitor or a returning enthusiast, the Camuso holiday display promises a festive experience not to be missed.

The exhibit is open from 4:30-9pm on weekdays. It is open from 4:30-10pm on Fridays and Saturdays. The last day it is open is January 1, 2024.

Open in December for self-guided tours of the first floor, where guests can experience the holidays circa the 1920’s. Kip’s Castle is a magnificent 9,000 square foot mansion that replicates a medieval Norman castle. The estate spans eleven acres of land on the ridge of First Mountain, resting in both Montclair and Verona townships, and provides spectacular views of New York City. The exteriors of both the castle and the 6,000 square foot, two story carriage house are constructed of local trap rock trimmed with sandstone. The interior of the castle consists of 30 distinguished rooms of varying shapes, which include vaulted ceilings and six ornate fireplaces.

BEST HOME RENOVATIONS The Montclair Historical Society Property– Crane House & Historic YWCA In 1796, 21-year-old Israel Crane built a mansion on 86 acres of farmland on Glenridge Avenue, for his wife Fanny Pierson Crane. The house remained the Crane family home for over 100 years. In 1920, African American women in the community purchased the home as the headquarters for a YWCA, which was a segregated space. It was a significant part of the African American community for four decades. By 1965, the YWCA desperately needed a new building, so preservationists moved the house to its present location and turned it into a historic house museum. The home tells the story of three generations of Cranes, the people (both enslaved and immigrants) who worked for them, the women and girls of the YWCA, and the early preservationists who fought to save this piece of Montclair’s history. The Nathaniel Crane House (1818), which is home to the Visitor Center and Museum Store, is also open and available to explore. The first floor features a collection of antique general store merchandise and equipment, including wares, sales counters, gates, and post office pigeon holes. The second floor is a replica 19th century schoolroom with a collection of period artifacts.

Leone grew up suffering from anxiety and ADHD and says she created this project along with her team as a response to the rise of mental health struggles in today’s schools. According to a recent survey by VeryWellMind*, 89% of teachers report that they need more resources in supporting their student’s mental health in the classrooms. The painted mural, Tie It to a Balloon, is on the back of Ridgewood Avenue School in Glen Ridge and Leone states that it’s a saying from her childhood. She explains, “Tie it to a balloon and let it go is a saying my mother once told me. She understood that I was a visual learner so one day when I was anxious, she told me to close my eyes and imagine writing down my worries on a piece of paper then tying those worries to a string attached to a balloon and letting the balloon go.” She told me, “As you watch that balloon float high up into the sky, visualize your worries floating away with it.” It’s a simple yet impactful message. “Learning to let go of my anxiety was understanding that, I can only control what I CAN control and the rest? Well, Tie it to a balloon and let it go!” Ridgewood Avenue School principal Dr. Michael Donovan is also a psychotherapist, and he says that when Leone came to him with this project he was thrilled, “It’s exciting to have a former student want to give back to her school and also embrace her own struggles with mental health issues in an effort to make a difference in the lives of children!” Donovan plans on having the coloring worksheets available to his staff, “The website and materials will be shared with all teachers as tools and resources they can offer to students proactively and in times of dysregulation and stress.”

Your Child and the Dentist Building a Positive Relationship Early On

The earlier your child begins visiting the dentist, the better. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends your child’s first visit by the age of one or within six months of when the first tooth erupts. At this stage, your child’s visit will be quick, simple, and pain-free. Providing your child early positive experiences will help your child develop trust in the dentist. Be aware that depending on your child’s age and the dental office policies, many dentists will ask you to remain in the lobby during your child’s checkup. This is the typical recommendation for children over the age of 3. There’s a good reason for this. Separating a child from parents usually results in fuller cooperation from children. This can go a long way toward a more positive experience for your child. When your child is placed in the care of the dental staff, they’ll try to make your child’s first experience fun and informative. The dentist will explain and demonstrate routine procedures to your child and then perform those procedures. Your child quickly learns the dentist is someone to trust.

If you’re still concerned with sending your child in alone, call and ask to speak with the dentist or hygienist. Avoid causing your child alarm and make the call in private so your child does not pick up on your anxiety. Explain your specific concerns so the dentist can address and alleviate your worries.

Tell your child about the benefits of going to the dentist, such as to help keep their teeth strong and healthy, and so they’ll have a beautiful smile.

The owners of Livingston Bagel, Daniel and Brooke Blue, are excited to welcome everyone back to their family’s recently renovated Bagel Store. The restaurant not only has a new modern look and feel—it has a unique flow, too. While there are new and exciting changes to the nut-free menu—customers can rest assured that their favorites are still available. Livingston Bagel, founded by Brooke’s grandparents, Sol and Rita Snyder, has been a fixture in town for 55 years, but after the pandemic, Daniel and Brooke started thinking about renovating the space to make it more functional, efficient, and aesthetically pleasing. They worked with interior designer Susie Chusid to create a modern-looking space with an open kitchen, bistro lights, and a beautiful taupe porcelain tile floor. Designed with a palette of gray and white, the space now boasts inviting granite high-top counters along the windows where customers Daniel Blue can enjoy meeting their

friends and colleagues for a great cup of coffee and meal. There are also more seating options to accommodate large parties. Their dining room is also available for private parties in the evening. The menu has also been updated to include more gluten-free and Vegan options, as well as more wraps and salads. Customers can also enjoy dining with table service. While they have made some Brooke Blue changes, one thing will stay the same—customers can still enjoy their Livingston Bagel favorites, including their famous bagels, spreads, and more delicious baked-on-premises baked goods. They also offer full-service catering and event planning.

I remember many years ago someone telling me that when you get older, you’ll realize that nothing is more important than your health, and that health is wealth. What can we eat to live a healthier and happier life, how can we move through exercises and daily routines to keep our bodies fit, and how can we improve our minds and the way we think? Here’s one way to keep the right F.R.A.M.E. of mind…

FOOD REST AIR MIND EXERCISE FOOD: Eat a balanced diet in the way that’s best for

you. Common sense tells you to include lots of water, fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans and grains. I’ve interviewed many of the top nutritionists, doctors and scientists on the healthiest ways we can feed our body and the overwhelming response has been a Whole Foods Plant Based lifestyle. The great martial arts masters from the past were legendary for their strength, agility and stamina. Among other requirements, they insisted that their food must not spoil easily, must be tasty, must be simple to prepare, and must make one feel full even when eaten in small amounts. I’ve also learned that what works for one person doesn’t always work for another person. So there is no one way for everyone. But… there is a book on the most comprehensive study of nutrition ever conducted and the startling implications for diet, weight loss and long-term health. It’s called The China Study by Dr. Colin Campbell. I would investigate this further.

REST: The National Sleep Foundation estimates that fatigue is to blame for up to 90% of all industrial accidents and costs businesses $18 billion a year in lost productivity. The answer? Short naps—15-20 minutes about eight hours after you wake up. However much sleep you require, rest helps you restore your energy: but be careful; too much rest is rust. So during the day, when you feel overwhelmed, which causes loss of focus and clarity, sometimes all it takes is a short break in the action to clear your mind, relax, regroup, and come back with a clear head. AIR: Oxygen sustains you, regulates your heart beat, and

feeds both your brain and your blood. Refresh the oxygen in your brain and blood several times a day. Here is an easy exercise to do. Use the 4-4-4 method: breathe in through your nostrils for four seconds, hold for four seconds, breathe out through your mouth for four seconds (or longer). It’s amazing how this simple exercise can relieve stress and add energy.

MIND: Increase your mental energy. Read books that

increase your effectiveness. Surround yourself with high energy people. We are all a product of our environment. It’s amazing how certain people can suck out all our mental and physical energy, and yet we surround ourselves with them every day. One of the greatest statements I’ve ever heard was by Earl Nightingale many years ago, “You become what you think about.” In the same way, you become like those around you. So be selective of what you read, but also be careful with whom you surround yourself.

EXERCISE: Commit to exercising at least 30 minutes

a day, 2 to 3 days a week. Regular exercise, not only increases overall energy levels, it also boosts our feelings of health, wellbeing, and self-esteem. Contrary to what many people think, sitting around, doing nothing makes you tired. The bottom line is that the more energy you expend, the more energy you expand within yourself. So the next time you feel like you’re not in the right F.R.A.M.E. of mind, think about how you’re doing in these five areas and remember health is wealth.
