FIBROMYALGIA:

Unraveling The Tangled Web of Chronic Pain

Do you suffer from chronic pain?

Are you afflicted by recurring headaches or migraines?

Are you tortured by the feelings of tenderness and swelling?

Do you experience numbness or tingling in your arms or legs?

If you have Fibromyalgia, you understand these symptoms all too well. Fibromyalgia affects the entire body. It is characterized by widespread pain in muscles and tissues. To make things complicated, it affects everyone’s body a little differently. And to go even further, the effects of Fibromyalgia can change daily. Sometimes you’re plagued with wide-spread muscle pain and fatigue, and other days it’s a headache and heightened sensitivity to touch. Meet Mary T., a resilient resident of Montclair, whose battle with debilitating pain echoes the struggles of many. Despite seeking solutions from numerous specialists, Mary found herself tangled in a relentless cycle of pain and exhaustion. “I was trapped,” she recalls, her voice heavy with weariness.

“I could barely stand to have even the weight of bedsheets touching me, much less a hug from my husband,” explains Elizabeth J. of West Caldwell. Elizabeth too found herself at a turning point when she noticed her diagnosis had started to take a toll on her marriage. “I was angry all the time because of all the things I couldn’t do anymore because of my Fibromyalgia. That anger cycled through to depression and affected everyone around me, my husband, more than anyone. It made our lives miserable.”

These are some examples of what it’s like to suffer from Fibromyalgia. Symptoms make everyday life incredibly difficult. Mundane, daily tasks are nearly Impossible.

In today’s fast-paced world, chronic pain is a silent epidemic, afflicting millions and disrupting daily life. But what if there was a hidden link between stress and chronic pain, waiting to be unveiled? Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM, of Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine in Montclair, is pioneering groundbreaking approaches to unravel the mysteries of chronic pain and offer hope to those suffering in silence.

Inflammation, the body’s innate response to injury or illness, often serves as a double-edged sword. While vital for healing, chronic inflammation can spiral out of control, plunging individuals into a vicious cycle of pain and discomfort.

It’s thought that fibromyalgia, a condition characterized by widespread body pain, may be the result of genetic (inherited) and environmental factors (such as exposure to a virus or illness). It’s also believed that physical or emotional stress can trigger the start of fibromyalgia symptoms. However, fibromyalgia may also appear without any obvious cause.

Driven by a flicker of hope, Mary and Elizabeth turned to Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine, where compassionate care awaited them. Under the guidance of Dr. Aleksandra and her dedicated team, Mary, Elizabeth, and many others embarked on a transformative journey toward healing.

Chronic pain often extends beyond the individual, affecting whole families, and casting a shadow over everyone’s lives. That’s why at Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine patients are invited to bring loved ones to accompany them to their appointments. “Support is integral to the healing process,” emphasizes Dr. Aleksandra, acknowledging the profound impact of familial bonds.

During consultations, insights from family members often unlock hidden triggers that underlie the chronic pain. “Mary’s husband mentioned the loss of her brother, shedding light on the profound impact of stress on her condition,” shares Dr. Aleksandra, highlighting the connection between emotional stress and trauma and physical well-being. Indeed, stress emerges as a formidable enemy in the battle against chronic pain, triggering a cascade of biochemical reactions that perpetuate inflammation.

Yet, amidst the darkness, rays of hope emerge, as Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine offers healing sanctuary. Through personalized treatment modalities, encompassing acupuncture, herbal medicine, ozone and ATP BIoresonance Therapy, Dr. Aleksandra empowers patients to escape the confines of pain and reclaim vitality.

“Dr. Aleksandra saved my life, and my marriage,” exclaims Mary, her gratitude palpable.

“I feel like a new person,” says Elizabeth.

From Livingston to Off-Broadway: A Native Pens Acclaimed Play

Livingston native Jonathan Marc Sherman, a prolific playwright and theater enthusiast, has brought his latest creation and second musical, “The Connector,” to the off-Broadway stage in NYC. The play, conceived in collaboration with director Daisy Prince and composer Jason Robert Brown, explores the world of journalism through the eyes of a reporter who fabricates stories to captivate readers. Inspired by realworld events and hoaxes spanning almost 200 years, “The Connector” delves into the ethical complexities of storytelling and the blurred lines between fact and fiction.

After 13 years of collaboration and workshops, “The Connector” finally came to fruition, with a successful run from January 2024 to St. Patrick’s Day. The production has received much acclaim for its engaging storyline and memorable musical numbers, thanks to the talents of Sherman, who wrote the book, Prince, Brown, and the entire cast and crew.

Sherman, who has produced 13 theater pieces, with two becoming musicals, says working on the show has been a “thrilling experience.” Looking ahead, he is optimistic about the future of “The Connector,” with many discussions underway. In the meantime, he remains committed to his craft, continuing to write and develop new projects, including another play.

Empowering Communities: A Leader’s Journey in Social Justice and

Human Rights

IIn the realm of social justice and human rights, one name shines brightly: Gouri Sadhwani of Glen Ridge. A distinguished leader in these sectors, Gouri’s journey epitomizes resilience, compassion, and a relentless pursuit of equity. Her latest endeavor as a Board Member of Pure Legacee is a testament to her unwavering commitment to empowering marginalized communities, particularly young women who have faced the justice system.

Gouri’s trajectory in the nonprofit sector spans over three decades, marked by impactful roles at esteemed organizations such as the Akanksha Education Fund and Amnesty International USA. Gouri is an Adjunct Professor at CUNY and the founder of GPS Consulting, which advises mission-driven organizations.

Her work on social justice has also included advocacy at the local level in Essex County. As the Founder of the Watsessing Park Conservancy, she brought together residents from Bloomfield and East Orange to call for upgrades to improve the park.

She credits her dad, Prem Sadhwani, who passed away last year, with her commitment to justice and giving back. She says, “My dad’s example was such a powerful influence on how I wanted to live my life and make a difference in the world. He was the epitome of compassion and kindness.”

Naquasia Pollard, 37, founded Pure Legacee in 2019, inspired by her own experiences of incarceration from the ages of 19 to 34. Recognizing the systemic gaps and societal challenges faced by young women reentering their communities, Naquasia was determined to create positive change.

Naquasia earned a college degree while incarcerated. After her release, she furthered her education by taking a nonprofit leadership and governance

class taught by Gouri at CUNY’s School of Labor and Urban Studies. This class is part of a program for formerly incarcerated individuals who want to learn and acquire the tools to give back to their community. Soon after finishing the program, Naquasia launched Pure Legacee and asked Gouri to be on the board. Gouri now helps establish good governing practices, finds fundraising opportunities, offers executive coaching, identifies and recruits board members, and helps with strategic planning.

Pure Legacee, Inc., provides healing and support to females aged 16-24 who have experienced trauma due to the criminal justice system or who have aged out of foster care and are facing homelessness. It offers a comprehensive approach that includes mentorship, leadership development, and holistic growth resources. Pure Legacee also prioritizes STEM education, offering young women opportunities in male-dominated fields.

Through its transformative programs, Pure Legacee has impacted the lives of over 200 young women, catalyzing positive change and fostering resilience. Naquasia’s words resonate deeply within the organization: “We are who we are in that moment. But that’s not who we are forever... And when you have invested in the girl, you’ve invested in the nation.”

Gouri’s dedication to social justice and human rights shines brightly through her work with Pure Legacee and beyond. Her unwavering commitment to empowering marginalized communities, especially young women impacted by the justice system, exemplifies her resilience and compassion. Through her leadership, Gouri continues to pave the way for a more equitable and inclusive society, leaving a lasting legacy of positive change.

VOLUNTEER IS MAKING A DIFFERENCE in Newark’s Homeless Support Efforts

LLinda Tsang of Verona, along with a team of volunteers from Angels On The Ground, Inc., is making a difference in the lives of Newark’s homeless and food-insecure. Despite facing challenges from city ordinances now barring them from setting up on public property, Linda’s dedication is evident as she continues to help provide meals and support to those in need. She has also volunteered at Toni’s Kitchen in Montclair, is a regular volunteer at the Holy Spirit Food Pantry in Verona and is a licensed foster parent.

Angels On The Ground, Inc., founded by Jessica Perez of Newark, was born out of a desire to help during the pandemic,

and Linda has been volunteering since September. For years, every Sunday from 7 am to 9 am, Angels On The Ground distributes sandwiches, soups, oatmeal, grab-and-go treats like granola bars, hot beverages, and pastries donated weekly by Newark’s Teixeira Bakery to the homeless and food-insecure near Penn Station. They also distribute clothing, blankets, and tents, ensuring that those they serve have necessities. However, when Newark recently started enforcing an ordinance requiring permits, which the City would not issue, the group had to move. Newark’s Lion Tribe, a partner organization of the group, helped find a kind soul in Jose Robles, owner of the

comic bookstore Fortress of Solitude, located at 53 University Ave #101, in Newark, who came to their rescue, volunteering his parking lot and ensuring that their outreach efforts continue uninterrupted. Now, Linda and the other Angels are working on letting their regulars know their new location.

Angels On The Ground operates with donations from the community, including food, clothing, and funds. They share a list of needed items on their social media pages, and members help them with supplies.

Linda’s dedication to helping the homeless goes beyond providing meals; she and the other Angels strive to create a sense of community and support for those they serve. They listen to their stories, offer words of encouragement, and provide much-needed companionship to those who often feel invisible.

Through Facebook, Angels On The Ground spreads awareness about their mission and accepts contributions to support their cause. Linda and the other Angels are shining examples of compassion and kindness, reminding us all of the importance of helping the needy.

Despite facing challenges, Linda and Angels On The Ground, Inc., continue to make a difference in the lives of Newark’s homeless. Their dedication and compassion serve as an inspiration, reminding us of the power of community and the impact that one person can make in the world.

CONSERVANCY Celebrates 20th Anniversary

December 12, 2023 marked the Hilltop Conservancy’s 20-year anniversary. The Conservancy, together with its more than 100+ volunteers, is dedicated to preserving and caring for the Hilltop Reservation, a 284-acre passive-use facility of the Essex County Parks system, located within the borders of Verona, Cedar Grove and the Caldwells.

In recognition of the 20th anniversary the Conservancy would like to take this opportunity to thank its donors, members and volunteers. With this support, the Conservancy’s major achievements over the past 20 years have been to remove more than 60 truckloads of trash and debris, 10 dumpsters of concrete and rubble, and demolish 8 decrepit buildings from the former Essex Mountain Sanitorium; remove graffiti; address dumping; commission an Ecological

Assessment; give input to the Hilltop Master Plan; restore grasslands, uplands, forests and wetlands; create 11 trails, a trails map, install markers and signage; launch a website and presence on social media; organize hikes, bike rides, bird and butterfly walks; install interpretive signage and entrance kiosks.

To fund and implement all this great work, the Conservancy relies on membership dues and donations from local residents, as well as service groups and volunteers. This financial support enables the Conservancy to purchase supplies and services, and to conduct events and projects in the Reservation.

Spring is in the air, and it’s time to celebrate outdoors! Carolyn always takes a seasonal and hands-on approach to cooking sessions that combine a relaxed, congenial atmosphere with collaborative engagement and personal instruction through every preparation step. Highlighting useful techniques, tips, and tricks to make your food healthier and more nutrient-dense, she’ll demonstrate and facilitate dialogue around creating delicious cuisine— none of the dishes will have more than 5 ingredients!

As we work together on this project, she will guide us through the health and energy benefits of low-glycemic eating, how to hack some traditional food choices and make them healthier, what to look for on a nutrition label, and what to prioritize in your food choices. CAMP TIPS

From the Camps Directors Themselves!

Here are some tips for choosing a summer theater camp/program:

• Look for small classes and high teacher to student ratio.

• Students should be grouped by age as well as ability. An 8 yr. old and a 14 yr. old have different learning curves and social needs and behaviors!

• The program should be individualized to the needs of each child and the teachers should be aware of each child’s needs and goals for the summer.

• Beware of programs that promise too much or profess to put on a different full musical every 1 or 2 weeks. Even Broadway performers need more time than that to put together a musical!

• Make sure that every student is being taught by seasoned professionals who know how to teach as well as perform. To develop a strong foundation, it’s very important to have all students – especially beginnerstaught by experienced teachers.

• To maximize the benefits of summer camp, a program should be a balance between musical theater classes and performance opportunities.

• Every student should be given an opportunity to “shine” in the performance so that they each have a chance to try out the skills they have learned and enjoy the thrill of being on stage!

• Programs should also include fun classes and other group activities that are aimed at ensuring that a strong dose of fun and team spirit be injected into the program. It is a summer camp after all!

“Performing Arts camps/programs encourage students and counselors to express themselves creatively. Nurturing the creative possibilities within children through their participation in dance, music, art, and drama can bolster selfesteem and self-confidence. Having the opportunity to experience the arts truly matters… and it’s fun!”

Sharron Miller, Founder/Director, Prime Time Summer Arts, Sharron Miller’s Academy for the Performing Arts www.SMAPA.org | 973-655-9819

Whether you’re brainstorming a script, stepping into character, or working behind the camera, remember: your ideas matter!Collaborate with fellow campers, share your visions, and watch creativity soar to new heights. Together, you’ll turn dreams into cinematic realities and forge lifelong friendships along the way!

Montclair Film Summer Academy | MontclairFilm.org/Education

The Theater classes we teach emphasize fun, while supporting self-esteem and confidence-building. We also highlight the importance of collaboration, a skill that helps students in all aspects of life. Kids learn to give positive feedback, hear and appreciate others’ ideas, and discover how to give every person in the group a chance to contribute. Together, these skills help all kids; the quiet child is supported in stepping out of their shell, while the assertive student develops empathy and consideration. All of this while having a super-fun time!

Janet Sales, Artistic Director, Essex Youth Theater 973-746-3303 | www.EssexYouthTheater.com

Often, children and young people follow along with adult choices and plans; it’s the society we all live in. When we can make it happen, kids need to have some say in their own schedules and how they spend their time. At camp, we build three periods a day where campers can decide what to do themselves. The camper chooses in the morning, with two activity periods after lunch. Choices like this allow kids to try new things, learn what they do and don’t like, make mistakes, and feel accomplished, too, especially when things go to plan!

Learning to make choices and weigh up the options is a life skill that kids need as they develop into adults. Choices at camp give kids space to learn this skill in a safe environment with low stakes! The worst scenario is that archery is full that day, and they’ll have to wait until tomorrow to get to the range. And in the meantime, there’s the garden, mid ropes, or candle making to try instead!

Creating beautiful homes while fostering strong community ties

A service-oriented business that earns an A+

From the time his neighbor, a carpenter, hired him at 14 as a summer helper, Ty Monk has loved making houses look their best. In 2007, he founded Monk’s Home Improvements and added more services as he continued to improve his skills. He also brought in his brother, Trevor, as co-owner in 2009.

“We maintain houses as well as remodel and upgrade them,” says Ty. “We look at what our customers are asking for and add that to our business plan. It’s literally the reason we opened our showrooms in Morristown and Fanwood. We are doing tons of kitchens and bathrooms, and it was challenging for our customers to pick out their tile from one place, get their plumbing fixtures from another, and their cabinetry and flooring from another.”

(continued on the next page)

CREATING BEAUTIFUL HOMES WHILE FOSTERING STRONG COMMUNITY TIES

(continued from the previous page)

Having these choices and more in one place saves a lot of time. Since the showrooms are staffed with talented designers, customers have complimentary professional assistance when making decisions.

Monk’s also has a process to avoid project delays by ensuring all materials are in their warehouse and ready to go before jobs begin. Projects then progress smoothly without any unexpected stoppages.

Their team of highly skilled tradesmen all specialize in their services, so one person will focus on tiling, another on flooring, and yet another on painting. In addition, they have built long-term relationships with many of the plumbers, electricians, and other subcontractors they use to guarantee continuous, high-quality work.

“We work with almost 7,000 people a year, and we made a conscious decision that our niche would be customer services and be above and beyond the best,” he says.

34 | Suburban Essex | April 2024
Michelle Olivera, Design Assistant & Steve Brink

Due to this dedication to service, the business has won many awards, including the Angie’s List Super Service Award and Best of Houzz in customer service, for ten years in a row.

“I’m very proud of that,” says Ty. “I know the company is a reflection of me, but the awards are also a reflection of our employees and what they put in.”

Ty is also a big believer in giving back. Over the years, the business has issued scholarships, donated painting services to schools, and served food to people in need. “I grew up in Maplewood and was part of a very active youth group at one of the churches in town. It focused on volunteering, such as visiting people’s homes and fixing them for free. As I got older and life got busier, volunteering became harder. So, bringing it into the company was a way to stay in touch with my roots and be who I am, but do it through a different venue.”

He says the real magic at Monk’s comes from the people involved. “Everybody focuses on giving their best, and we do it as a team.”

Recessed Lighting Options

Recessed Lighting is sleek, unobtrusive, and a versatile way to light your home. It is intentionally minimalist, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of variations to choose from.

TRIM OPTIONS

There are several styles of trim options for recessed lighting. The differences between them can be style-based and also center around the sort of lighting they provide.

• Open Trim provides plenty of bright light that can cover large spaces

• Baffle trim is designed to reduce glare so the lighting is softer and more relaxing on the eye.

• Adjustable trim allows you to position your lighting to highlight certain areas of your room or simply personalize its mood.

You’ll also want to make sure your recessed lighting has the features you want. Diming options allow you to adjust the level of light on a gradient. It’s fantastic in a bedroom or living room.

There are also recessed lights specifically designed to fit sloped ceilings. And when you need to light outdoor areas or rooms that are frequently wet, such as bathrooms, there is lighting designed specifically for these areas.

No matter what type of recessed lighting you need Anderson Electric can help.

Nature-Inspired Kitchen Cabinet Trends

FFor the past decade white shaker-style cabinetry rose to the top of the wish list for many homeowners who pursued a kitchen renovation. Now that people are spending more time in their houses and working from home, they’ve begun to pine for nature and yearn to bring the outdoors inside. As a result, there is an increased demand for warmer tones and natural wood kitchen cabinets.

The shaker profile is still the most popular kitchen door style but clients continue to seek simple alternatives with more detailing. Along with the cabinet door style a growing number of homeowners seek to mix stained with painted cabinetry, and contrast materials and accent colors.

White shaker cabinet doors have always been a tried-and-true classic look but more clients who desire a painted finish want a softer, earthier color such as linen or taupe shades. Clients are also requesting accent cabinets in various shades of blues and greens to infuse a more natural vibe into their home.

Mixing in a natural wood island, or other cabinetry, with varying amounts of graining and texture has become increasingly popular. White oak has become one of the most favored woods in both rift-cut or quarter-sawn because it has a lot of graining and texture to it. Walnut is also in demand due to its rich wood graining, and smooth finish. Whether it’s a stained finish or natural wood the warmth of wood is a favorite that is also neutral and can easily be paired with any accent color and blends seamlessly into any home.

ED KASHI

A Love Letter to Photography

AT THE

MONTCLAIR ART MUSEUM

The photographs of Montclair resident Ed Kashi simply stop you in your tracks. It’s as if it’s impossible to look away… until you see another out of the corner of your eye, and that one captures your attention. A combination his free style of shooting, wherein he just about dances with the camera, and his connection to the subject and the moment, create images that are nothing short of striking and evocative.

Growing up in Great Neck, Long Island as a teenager he thought he wanted to be a writer. But while attending the S.I. Newhouse School of Communication at Syracuse University, Kashi took a photography course and found his path. It would answer the desire he

always felt to become engaged with people as a storyteller.

After graduation in 1979, he headed to San Francisco and figured he’d find work with public relations firms. Working out of the Yellow Pages he began calling the alphabetically listed agencies. He never got past J. A busy career making mundane photos wasn’t fulfilling, however. So he began working for many of the Arts-oriented publications in the Bay Area, and while the photo budgets were tiny, he amassed a sizable and distinctive portfolio which featured national notables. By 1984 he was in-demand at many national magazines covering the Silicon Valley beat.

But it was in 1988 that something happened: Kashi started the first of his personal projects. He began photographing in Northern Ireland, which took him back and forth for a period of three years. The work is, in his words: “It is an unsentimental view of working-class loyalist communities in both Belfast and further afield”, and became, in 1991, a book called No Surrender: The Protestants. Since then, his time is split between a steady stream of assignments from National Geographic, and an on-going series of personal projects that have take him all over the world and likewise become a series of books.

Currently, a selection from his book Abandoned Moments: A Love Letter To Photography is on display at the Montclair Art Museum until May 19, 2024. The images in the exhibit encompass his 40 year career, and three of them are published here. You can see many more photographs with a visit to his website. But we suggest a visit to the museum wherein the photographs printed and displayed on the gallery wall are definitely worth the trip. Go. You’ll be moved.

A FIRST FOR STRAIGHTER TEETH

Early detection and treatment prevents future problems

NNearly a quarter of children in the U.S. will need braces, but is there a way to make treatment easier? Invisalign First aims to make your child’s orthodontic care faster and better with Invisalign First and the new Invisalign Palate Expander.

Few know Invisalign better than Dr. Eric Sacks of Sacks Orthodontics in Livingston. Dr. Sacks is a Diamond Plus Invisalign Provider and one of the Top 11 Invisalign providers in the nation. He knows not every child will be comfortable with braces, and recommends Invisalign First as a great alternative.

“People might be surprised to learn two things about Invisalign,” Dr Sacks said. “The first is that Invisalign offers a product for small children called Invisalign First, which includes the launch of the highly anticipated Invisalign Palate Expander.

“The second is how well younger kids do in terms of being responsible and compliant with wearing their aligners and participating in their treatment,” he said. “This younger age group is often highly motivated and responsible. In my experience, they’ve done amazingly well with the Invisalign First treatment modality.”

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children consult with an orthodontist by age 7. Early detection of dental issues allows orthodontists to make small corrections now before they become big problems later.

You can help your child with Invisalign First by encouraging them to wear their aligners as prescribed and teaching them how to care for their customized Invisalign First clear aligners.

April is Autism Acceptance Month, which was initially founded in 1972 as National Autistic Children’s Week by the Autism Society and has grown into a global movement to raise awareness and acceptance for those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The United Nations General Assembly designated April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day in 2008 to improve the quality of life for those with autism. This years theme, “The Interplay: Autism and SDGs,” highlights the importance of aligning efforts with the Sustainable Development Goals for inclusivity.

Autism affects approximately one in every 54 children in the United States, yet there remains a lack of understanding and acceptance. ASD is a complex developmental condition that affects communication, social interaction, and behavior, and early intervention and support are crucial for individuals with autism to lead fulfilling lives.

SSuburban Essex Magazine recently interviewed John Levai, who is an advocate for autism awareness and an inspiration for those on the spectrum. He graduated from Montclair High School and completed his undergraduate degree in business administration at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, NY. Despite facing challenges in socialization and understanding context, he has overcome them with the help of his strong support system. John said, ‘I have been successful in many different capacities thanks to having a great support system.’ His perseverance is courageous and admirable, making him the perfect person to profile for Autism Awareness Month.

This April, let’s celebrate the unique strengths and abilities of individuals with autism, promote acceptance and inclusivity, and advocate for a more compassionate and understanding society for all.

Can you share aspects of your daily experiences that might differ from neurotypical individuals?

There may be instances where I might not always realize that I could be doing something that is a subtle social miscue. For example, when the topic is being discussed, I’ll be so deep in thought with the discussion that I may veer off the topic.

What advice would you give those who want to understand better and connect with individuals on the autism spectrum?

I would start by saying that people on the autism spectrum are just like any other neurotypical individual. They

may have some unique hobbies that the mainstream population might not have. However, the autistic population deserves to be treated the same way as anybody else.

Do you wish more people understood any particular aspects of your artistic experience?

Yes. One of them is that sometimes I might move slower than a person without special needs to achieve a task. Next, I wish that more people would understand not to make loud noises that might scare a random person, including one who might be on the spectrum. Lastly, following particular hobbies that aren’t mainstream doesn’t always mean that an autistic person will behave immaturely.

Nutrient-rich Foods Result in Healthier and Stronger Nails

IIf you’re looking to improve the appearance and health of your nails, there are a variety of nutrient-rich foods that can help. By including these foods in your diet, you can nourish your nails from the inside out and promote stronger, healthier growth.

Eggs are an excellent source of protein, which is essential for healthy nail growth. They also contain biotin, a B vitamin that strengthens nails and prevents breakage. In addition to their protein content, eggs are also rich in sulfur, which can help to strengthen the nail bed and support healthy nail growth.

Almonds are a great source of vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant that can repair damaged nails and prevent them from becoming brittle. Vitamin E can also help to improve blood flow to the nail bed, which can promote healthy nail

growth. Almonds also contain protein, magnesium, and healthy fats, all of which can support healthy nails.

Spinach is packed with vitamins and minerals that are essential for nail health. It’s particularly rich in iron, which is important for healthy nail growth and can prevent nails from becoming weak and brittle. Spinach also contains vitamin C, which can help to boost collagen production and strengthen nails.

Salmon is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, which can help to moisturize nails and prevent them from becoming dry and brittle. Omega-3s can also help to reduce inflammation in the nail bed, which can promote healthy growth. Salmon also contains vitamin D, which is important for nail strength and can help to prevent breakage.

Sweet potatoes are rich in beta-carotene, a powerful antioxidant that can promote healthy cell growth and repair damaged nails. They’re also a good source of vitamins C and E, which can strengthen nails and improve their appearance. Sweet potatoes also contain potassium and copper, which can support healthy nail growth.

By incorporating these nutrient-dense foods into your diet, you can help to promote healthy nail growth and prevent common nail problems.

Walk Your Way to BETTER HEALTH

A walk is not just good for your body, it’s also good for your soul. Physical activity, like walking, is one of the best ways to reduce stress and boost your mood. However, reports show walking rates are declining steadily in the United States.

On average, 1 out of every 4 U.S. adults sits for longer than eight hours each day, per research from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, which can have negative consequences on physical and mental health. Regular exercise improves mood, boosts energy and can even help you sleep better. Staying active is one of the best ways to keep your mind and body healthy.

Getting the recommended amount of physical activity (at least 150 minutes of moderate, 75 minutes of vigorous or a

combination of those activities per week) is linked to lower risk of diseases, stronger bones and muscles, improved mental health and cognitive function and lower risk of depression, according to the U.S Department of Health and Human Services.

Outdoor exercise is an easy way to get moving and take in the sunlight, which can improve mood, boost immunity and help you get some vitamin D. Spending time outdoors is a no-cost option and has been shown to reduce stress, promote a sense of belonging and improve mood.

Physical activity keeps your mind sharp now and later. Studies show higher fitness levels are linked to better attention, learning, working memory and problem solving. What’s more, a study published

in the “British Journal of Sports Medicine” shows people who get the recommended amount of physical activity are less likely to develop depression.

Healthy life expectancy can be positively impacted by increasing activity

. According to research published in the “American Journal of Epidemiology,” swapping just 30 minutes of sitting with low-intensity physical activity reduced risk of death by 17%.

You have no family history of colon cancer. You still need a colon cancer screening.

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.

Along with eating healthy and regular exercise, your best bet for good colon health is to get a colon cancer screening. Individuals at average risk for colorectal cancer should begin screening at age 45. Individuals at higher risk should speak to their doctor about getting screened sooner. Regular screening can detect and prevent colorectal cancer in its earliest stages, which is when the cancer is most treatable. Should your screening indicate the need for treatment, we offer the latest options, from complex surgical procedures and radiation therapy to clinical trials and precision medicine. The best screening is the one that gets completed, so schedule yours now at rwjbh.org/colonscreening

“Running

4 Answers, a race against Alzheimer’s” is a 5k race and 2-mile fun run located in Roseland. They are USATF-sanctioned and part of the Grand Prix series (500 points). Carolyn Mastrangelo, director and co-founder, created this event when her mother was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease and she couldn’t find a race benefiting its research.

R4A has worked to host these annual events with three goals:

1. Increase awareness of and money for Alzheimer’s disease;

2. Manage a great race and;

3. Create a fun community event

This is the 15th annual and final event. To date, they have donated $490,000 to Cure Alzheimer’s Fund. They chose this organization based on its sole focus on research AND because every dollar donated goes toward that research. Funded by the three founding families who were unhappy with the progress of research to slow, stop or reverse the disease, they started their own organization. Their mission is finding a cure; they hold no interest in patents or ownership of that cure. All who receive grants from them must share all information discovered.

Are You Ready to Rebel?

C

Calling all athletes and others who want to look, feel, and perform at their best! Rebel Core, the only Modern Pilates studio in Essex County, invites everyone to find their inner rebel with a full-body workout that incorporates time under tension to challenge the muscle fibers with slow and controlled movements. Slowing down and working on flexibility/mobility is often a mission component in most people’s exercise routines.

Stephanie Rogers, along with her brother Lou, own Rebel Core’s sister gym, Hardbodyz Fitness, in Verona. Years ago, Stephanie found Pilates in her personal practice and decided eight months ago to open the Rebel Core studio with her husband Bill. In January 2024, they brought it to life. “Rebel Core provides the flexibility and core work through time under tension that so many of us need,” says Stephanie.

The Rogers opened Rebel Core to build a community of like-minded individuals who love to move their bodies and push themselves to be better, stronger, and more well-rounded. “Every BODY has a place in our community, and we invite everyone from athletes to new mothers to the serious bodybuilder to experience the Rebel Core Method,” states Stephanie.

The Xformer is central to Rebel Core exercises and the main apparatus for completing them. By using the Xformer, your slow-twitch muscle fibers are challenged through varying levels of resistance springs, angles, and positions exclusive to the Rebel Core method. Rebel Core will strengthen and sculpt your body, promote body awareness, and reduce stress.

Each class is 45 minutes long and provides a great full-body workout.

The Rebel Core schedule features an essentials class, perfect for beginners or those looking to take it slower, and a modern Pilates class, which is open-level and designed to welcome everyone with all levels of experience. Modifications and progressions are provided in both levels to ensure each client receives what they personally need in each class.

Rebel Core has its own custom-branded app available for download from The App Store or Google Play Store. Clients can access the class schedule, meet the instructors, and choose the right classes. Please also find us on Instagram to see the machines and team in action.

We can’t wait to Rebel with you!

GET OVER IT!

Don’t Let Resentments Drag You Down. In The End, It’s All Up To You.

OOne of my favorite bands, The Eagles, wrote a song poking fun at people who constantly whine that they are, “victims of this, victims of that,” yet never take responsibility for their lives.

The Eagles advice? “Get over it!”

How many people are living with grudges, anger and resentment from the past? It can eat at your insides and do more damage than you think. What’s done is done. And surprisingly, you can gain much from past difficulties—depending on how you look at it.

For example, a study of two sons of an alcoholic father found that one grew up to become a successful businessman, while his brother was living on the streets, a hopeless drunk. Both sons were asked: “Why did you end up this way?” And each had the same answer: “What would you expect with a father like mine?”

It’s all about choices. We can let all the past experiences and people who have “hurt” us make us bitter or better. If we choose to let anger and resentment seethe, they can become like poisons destroying us—and even end up killing us with unnecessary stress. A USA Today study found that more than 80% of doctors’ visits are for illnesses related to stress.

Now, I was about to write some tips on how to get over disappointments and live a more stress-free lifestyle when I thought I’d reverse the process and look at it from a whole new angle.

Here are several tips on how to be miserable. Yes, miserable. You may even know a few people like this— and they wouldn’t trade their misery for all the riches in the world.

TIP #1: Believe the world is against you. Cut yourself off from the world and then somehow, an inner voice tells you that everyone’s out to get you. You have to keep a negative attitude toward everyone—because for some odd reason, people’s reaction will mirror your approach.

TIP #2: Get all wrapped up in yourself. It’s not time to think of people’s needs; after all, you should always come first.

TIP #3: Find an illness in a medical book (and we do have a name for anything you can think up) that defines why people should feel sorry for you. Tell everyone your “diagnosis” to rationalize your misery. This should work well for a while, and when it gets stale, you can search for something else to evoke sympathy.

TIP #4: Blame everyone else for your problems. Never look inside for a solution. Your troubles are always because someone else got lucky and you ended up suffering because of it.

TIP #5: And finally, hold these words close to your heart at all times: anger, jealousy, self-pity, selfishness, self-absorption and revenge. You get the point. Attitude determines your altitude in most situations— some look up and some look down. We have the final choice. If it’s going to be, it’s up to me.

The writer Maya Angelou phrased it beautifully: “If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude. Don’t complain.” Or, as the Eagles put it, “Get over it.”
