ast year, Charlotte Competello and Gabi Facktor started a chapter of Project Smile at Millburn High School. The club, which has a goal of improving the pediatric patient experience, currently boasts over 60 members. Members hold bake sales and other fundraisers to raise money. It also runs periodic Amazon Wish List drives where those interested can choose selected toys to order for delivery to pediatric patients. The club’s last drive raised over $1,000 in gifts that were donated to the Children’s Hospital of New Jersey at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. Gabi says, “Because Project Smile is such a good cause, it makes all of the organizing and fundraisers even more fun knowing that in the end we will be making kids happy.” Charlotte says, “I am so happy that through this club, I can help relieve someone’s pain a little bit.” The club is currently running a drive until January 5th at: https://amzn.to/3sm07gJ

Elementary School Walks to Fight Food Insecurity
ecently, Glenwood Elementary School in Millburn, held its annual Walk-A-Thon for Bridges Outreach in Summit, where they raised money to buy ingredients to pack 852 lunch bags with chicken salad, fruit cups, granola bars and goldfish, for people supported by Bridges. The outreach center strives to end homelessness through volunteer-driven outreach and individual case management focusing on health, housing, and independence. Glenwood’s Principal David Jasin calls the event a
character education initiative because it provides a hands-on experience that shows the students how the money being raised will be used. They learn what it means to be less fortunate, and that people who live close by need help because of food insecurity. A month after the walk, which was a fun day with a DJ, the children were invited by grade to help decorate and pack the bags. Jasin says, “It’s a great activity because the kids take pride in knowing they have a responsibility to do something good to take care of the community.”
Millburn Mom Launches South Asian Inspired Business
W
hat started out as a way of getting some “me time,” has become a passion for Anuja Mehra, of Millburn, whose custom, handmade South Asian inspired wooden gift items now adorn her newly launched website – tintedheritage. com. The products, which are laser cut and etched, are all hand-designed by Anuja, and can be personalized as needed. Anuja says that her items, which include cutting boards, desk signs, and coasters make great gifts for any occasion. College Alumni Can Still Participate in Competitive Horseback Riding
L
ena Andrews Licata of Millington, who rode on the Lehigh University Equestrian Team at college, has taken her love of horseback riding to new levels by creating a nonprofit, All Alumni Competitions Inc. It allows people who participated in competitive horseback riding in college to continue to do so. She says after college, unlike other collegiate sports, you can’t just join a town or club team and continue participating. To combat this, the nonprofit runs competitions for alumni riders all over the US and Canada, along with an annual Nationwide final. Shows have been held in Florida, Illinois, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, with more to come. Since the sport is very expensive, the nonprofit takes the cost out of the equation by supplying horses at each event. “Horses shouldn’t just be for the rich – all people should be able to experience horses in their lives,” Lena says. CASA Launches Youth Advisory Council
R
ecently, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Morris and Sussex Counties launched a Youth Advisory Council for teen leaders in grades 7-11, where members will learn about philanthropy, and how to collaborate on projects bringing awareness to the challenges experienced by abused and neglected children and teens in foster care. The Council will allow 25 teens from diverse backgrounds to act as ambassadors for CASA, serving as leaders in their own communities to increase awareness of CASA’s mission “to be a strong voice for the best interests of vulnerable children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse and neglect.” CASA of Morris and Sussex Counties is part of a statewide network of community- based nonprofit programs that recruit, screen, train, and supervise volunteers to “Change a Child’s Story.” These volunteers advocate for children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. Summit Teen Teaches Tech to Seniors
ummit resident, Michael Petrides, a junior at Regis High School in Manhattan, has created a program through the Summit Community Programs Department called Teens Teach Tech to Seniors. On one Saturday a month from 10 am to 1 pm, he meets with seniors at the Summit Rec Center to help them with their technology needs and answer any questions they may have. Depending on how many people sign up for the session,
he sometimes brings along other teens to help out. Michael enjoys helping the seniors with things like using their cell phones, computers, and more. He says he finds the work fulfilling and that he can tell he’s making a difference by how appreciative they are. “I enjoy bringing smiles to their faces, and spending time with them afterward to chat about their lives,” he says. Berkeley Heights Mom GIVES BACK IN MANY WAYS

Sundari Rao Arni of Berkeley Heights has woven the spirit of giving into the fabric of her everyday life. With over a decade of experience in the community, she is a shining example of altruism and compassion. Her commitment to philanthropy extends beyond occasional acts; it’s a continuous thread that runs through her roles as a mother, educator, and community leader. Her involvement in various initiatives is inspiring. From fundraisers to monthly volunteer endeavors at a Morristown homeless shelter, she dedicates her time to causes close to her heart. Her generosity reaches diverse corners, ranging from supporting children, families, and schools in need, to providing meals for the food insecure. In addition, Sundari goes the extra mile by adopting families to shop for during the holidays, knitting and crocheting for individuals undergoing chemotherapy, and participating in fundraising walks and runs. Her multifaceted approach to giving back exemplifies the impact one person can make when driven by a genuine desire to help others. As the owner and director of the Union Village Montessori School in Berkeley Heights, Sundari extends her philosophy of giving to the young minds she nurtures. Instilling the value of making a difference in the lives of others, she believes that teaching children about empathy and philanthropy from an early age is crucial. Sundari’s own children, whom she took to a homeless shelter when they were young, experienced a transformative moment that shifted their perspectives. Leaving with tears in their eyes, they emerged with a deeper understanding of the world and a newfound appreciation for the importance of giving over receiving.

She feels that community involvement is essential, especially during the holiday season. “As a community, we can really do a lot to help others,” she states. She encourages everyone to contribute in their own ways. Her unwavering dedication serves as a call to action, inspiring others to reflect on the impact they can have and the positive change they can bring to those in need. Sundari hopes that her story inspires others to give back, share kindness, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, especially during the holiday season.

Helping Madison Residents IN NEED DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON

The Madison Eagle Christmas Fund (MECF) has been a beacon of hope for Madison, NJ, residents for half a century. What started in 1972 as a small initiative by Barbara Valk and her family, has blossomed into a thriving all-volunteer charity that extends a helping hand to hundreds of families and seniors during the festive season. In its 51st year, the MECF has become synonymous with the spirit of giving in Madison. Louise Easton, the owner, and editor of the Madison Eagle newspaper joined forces with the Valk family, and together, they laid the foundation for an organization that embodies neighbors helping neighbors. The MECF’s mission is simple yet powerful: to provide gift cards for groceries, warm winter clothing and gifts to Madison families and senior citizens facing financial challenges. Unlike traditional assistance programs, the MECF goes beyond by allowing recipients the dignity to choose their gift cards from a list of local shops and restaurants. Stacey Smollen, the Co-Chair of MECF, who resides in Madison, emphasizes the organization’s commitment to inclusivity. The charity extends its support to families with young children in the PreSchool Advantage program and with older children receiving free school lunches, and to seniors living on fixed incomes in Madison Housing Authority residences, as well as the Pine Acres Nursing Home. The MECF strives to connect with those in genuine need, ensuring that the community’s support reaches the right hands.
As a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, the MECF relies on the generosity of the community to fund its noble cause. Contributions are not only a gesture of goodwill but are also tax-deductible. Importantly, the MECF ensures that assistance is provided solely based on financial need, without any discrimination based on faith, race, or sexual orientation. In 2022, the MECF reached new heights in its outreach efforts. Gift cards were distributed to 115 families and 93 seniors, amounting to a total value of $85,750. The breakdown includes $39,350 from Stop & Shop gift cards, $14,400 from Burlington for warm winter clothing, and $32,000 from over 30 local businesses in Madison. “The MECF’s unique approach in providing gift cards to our Madison neighbors in need has had the ripple effect of supporting our business neighbors, keeping most of our donation dollars right here in town,” says Stacey.

The MECF is not just a charity; it’s a community-driven initiative that reflects the heart of Madison. As the holiday season approaches, Stacey asks that those interested consider making the MECF a part of their giving tradition, contributing to a legacy of compassion that has defined Madison for five decades. Holiday and Celtic Ancestry Concert and Food Drive

The Pipes of Christmas, which is celebrating its 25th this year, will offer a traditional take on the season, celebrating the holiday’s spiritual and cultural roots in a fresh, meaningful way. Not only does the performance define Christmas cheer, but it also inspires those of Celtic descent to retrace and reconnect to their ancestry. The show will feature beloved favorites, including “Highland Cathedral,” “Joy to the World,” “Silent Night,” and “Amazing Grace,” which will all be performed live on pipes and drums, harp and fiddle, organ, brass, and more. For the 25th annual production, the concert will also perform world premiere works composed exclusively for this production. In addition to these traditional carols and newly commissioned works, the program will also include readings taken from the Celtic literature of Scotland, Ireland, and Wales.

The Museum of Early Trades and Crafts (METC), which allows guests to explore American history, with a focus on the life of 18th and 19th century craftsmen and artisans, is full of holiday cheer this season boasting a special Nutcracker Storytime, festive ornament making activities, and more. The Museum has been transformed into a turn-of-the-century winter wonderland. Throughout December, visitors are invited to create ornaments for the trees, which are on display on the front lawn. In the heart of Summit, where history meets modernity, Summit House has emerged as a seasonal American gem under the guidance of new Executive Chef AJ Capella. A recipient of the prestigious 2017 Rising Star Chef Award from the Garden State Culinary Arts Foundation, Capella took the reins at Summit House in June 2023, bringing his celebrated culinary prowess to this character-rich, impeccably redesigned 130-year-old building. Formerly corporate chef with Montclair Hospitality Group, where he curated menus for esteemed restaurants such as pastaRAMEN, Ani Ramen House, and Mochinut, Capella’s impressive background also includes stints as executive chef at Jockey Hollow Bar & Kitchen in Morristown, A Toute Heure in Cranford, and Liberty House in Jersey City. He is now embarking on a new journey in Summit, helping 6-year-old Summit House to fully achieve its long-held vision of bringing New York City standards – of both cuisine and atmosphere – to the New Jersey suburbs.
A SYMPHONY INSPIRED BY THE GARDEN STATE Capella’s commitment to excellence is evident in every dish. The seasonal menu, sourced from local farms, fishermen, and select providers, tells a tale of quality and authenticity. The renewed raw bar, which also changes with the seasons, boasts large towers featuring East Coast oysters, shrimp cocktail, jumbo crab salad, mussels escabeche, yellowtail tartare, and lobster cocktail. The patinaed 16-seat café bar, home to a seasonal craft cocktail program run by award-winning mixologist Bobby Frascella, offers inventive takes on traditional drinks and constantly evolving house cocktails boasting seasonal and fresh ingredients procured from nearby sources. Examples include The Lost Generation (Laird’s apple brandy, Amaro Lucano, Rockey’s liqueur, grenadine, lemon and lime) and Ebert & Roeper (buttered popcorn Elijah Craig bourbon, demerara, angostura, orange and lemon).

Roasted Mushroom Bisque BY CHEF AJ CAPELLA INGREDIENTS • 5 lb cremini mushroom • 1 lb white onion • 1/2 lb fennel bulb • 1/2 lb carrot • 1/2 lb celery root • 1/4 lb garlic • 10 sprigs thyme • 2 fresh bay leaves • 2T coriander • 2T peppercorn • 1/4 c kosher salt PROCESS Preheat oven to 500 degrees. Wash and slice the creminis, including the stems. In a large mixing bowl, lightly oil mushrooms, spreading evenly in thin layers on baking trays. Roast until dark brown and slightly crispy. Slice all vegetables.
A LABOR OF LOVE: THE PEOPLE BEHIND SUMMIT HOUSE For partners Dylan and Melissa Baker and Tyler and Sara Reeder, opening Summit House was a love letter to the couples’ hometown of Summit. With a passion for food instilled at an early age, both Dylan, the managing general partner, and Chef AJ bring a wealth of experience to the front and back of house. The management team, including Beverage Director Frascella and General Manager Michael Laposta, ensures that Summit House offers hospitality commensurate with its cuisine.
In a large pot over low heat, sweat all vegetables using canola or another neutral oil, covered with a lid while stirring occasionally. Vegetables are finished when very soft and translucent (They should have released about a 1/2 cup of liquid). Add the mushrooms and whatever liquid is on the tray. Make a bundle of thyme, rosemary, bay leaf, peppercorn and coriander using cheese cloth. Add the bundle to the pot and top with 2 gallons of either water or vegetable broth. Simmer for approximately 1 hour on medium heat. Blend smooth using a high-powered blender and strain through a fine mesh strainer.

Ecstatic Expectancy Harmonium Choral Society December Concert

Harmonium will open its 45th anniversary season with Ecstatic Expectancy, featuring music that expresses eager anticipation, including a comparison of Durante’s Magnificat of 1746 with two premieres of Magnificat by contemporary American women composers, Dale Trumbore and Jessica French. They will be accompanied by string quartet, organ, handbells and piano and will feature Harmonium’s outstanding Chamber Singers. Included in the concert are new works by Mark Miller, Reena Esmail, and Zanaida Robles, and David Thomson’s whimsical setting of A.A. Milne’s King John’s Christmas. Composer Thomson lives in Chatham and also sings in Harmonium.
“I am so excited to premiere Dale Trumbore’s Magnificat on the East Coast” says Artistic Director Anne Matlack, “because she won Harmonium’s High School Choral Composition Contest in 2005 as a senior at Chatham High School and is now an award-winning LA-based composer. Your Child and the Dentist Building a Positive Relationship Early On

The earlier your child begins visiting the dentist, the better. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends your child’s first visit by the age of one or within six months of when the first tooth erupts. At this stage, your child’s visit will be quick, simple, and pain-free. Providing your child early positive experiences will help your child develop trust in the dentist. Be aware that depending on your child’s age and the dental office policies, many dentists will ask you to remain in the lobby during your child’s checkup. This is the typical recommendation for children over the age of 3. There’s a good reason for this. Separating a child from parents usually results in fuller cooperation from children. This can go a long way toward a more positive experience for your child. When your child is placed in the care of the dental staff, they’ll try to make your child’s first experience fun and informative. The dentist will explain and demonstrate routine procedures to your child and then perform those procedures. Your child quickly learns the dentist is someone to trust.
If you’re still concerned with sending your child in alone, call and ask to speak with the dentist or hygienist. Avoid causing your child alarm and make the call in private so your child does not pick up on your anxiety. Explain your specific concerns so the dentist can address and alleviate your worries.
Tell your child about the benefits of going to the dentist, such as to help keep their teeth strong and healthy, and so they’ll have a beautiful smile.

The delicate skin around your eyes is 10x thinner than the skin on your face, and therefore the most likely to show early signs of aging. Apply skin care products with a very light touch by dabbing on with your fourth finger or pinky. DON’T use the same skin care products as on the rest of your face. It may seem natural to just apply the same products to your eye area that you use elsewhere, but this thinner skin will benefit most from products that are specially formulated for both underneath the eyes as well as above the eyes. I
I remember many years ago someone telling me that when you get older, you’ll realize that nothing is more important than your health, and that health is wealth. What can we eat to live a healthier and happier life, how can we move through exercises and daily routines to keep our bodies fit, and how can we improve our minds and the way we think? Here’s one way to keep the right F.R.A.M.E. of mind…
FOOD REST AIR MIND EXERCISE FOOD: Eat a balanced diet in the way that’s best for
you. Common sense tells you to include lots of water, fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans and grains. I’ve interviewed many of the top nutritionists, doctors and scientists on the healthiest ways we can feed our body and the overwhelming response has been a Whole Foods Plant Based lifestyle. The great martial arts masters from the past were legendary for their strength, agility and stamina. Among other requirements, they insisted that their food must not spoil easily, must be tasty, must be simple to prepare, and must make one feel full even when eaten in small amounts. I’ve also learned that what works for one person doesn’t always work for another person. So there is no one way for everyone. But… there is a book on the most comprehensive study of nutrition ever conducted and the startling implications for diet, weight loss and long-term health. It’s called The China Study by Dr. Colin Campbell. I would investigate this further.
REST: The National Sleep Foundation estimates that fatigue is to blame for up to 90% of all industrial accidents and costs businesses $18 billion a year in lost productivity. The answer? Short naps—15-20 minutes about eight hours after you wake up. However much sleep you require, rest helps you restore your energy: but be careful; too much rest is rust. So during the day, when you feel overwhelmed, which causes loss of focus and clarity, sometimes all it takes is a short break in the action to clear your mind, relax, regroup, and come back with a clear head. AIR: Oxygen sustains you, regulates your heart beat, and
feeds both your brain and your blood. Refresh the oxygen in your brain and blood several times a day. Here is an easy exercise to do. Use the 4-4-4 method: breathe in through your nostrils for four seconds, hold for four seconds, breathe out through your mouth for four seconds (or longer). It’s amazing how this simple exercise can relieve stress and add energy.
MIND: Increase your mental energy. Read books that
increase your effectiveness. Surround yourself with high energy people. We are all a product of our environment. It’s amazing how certain people can suck out all our mental and physical energy, and yet we surround ourselves with them every day. One of the greatest statements I’ve ever heard was by Earl Nightingale many years ago, “You become what you think about.” In the same way, you become like those around you. So be selective of what you read, but also be careful with whom you surround yourself.
EXERCISE: Commit to exercising at least 30 minutes
a day, 2 to 3 days a week. Regular exercise, not only increases overall energy levels, it also boosts our feelings of health, wellbeing, and self-esteem. Contrary to what many people think, sitting around, doing nothing makes you tired. The bottom line is that the more energy you expend, the more energy you expand within yourself. So the next time you feel like you’re not in the right F.R.A.M.E. of mind, think about how you’re doing in these five areas and remember health is wealth.
