Mom’s Bilingual Book Teaches Children to Read in Both Italian and English

Fairfield Children Hold Charitable Lemonade Stand

R

Recently, seven Fairfield children sold lemonade and raised $630 that was split between the Hawaii Community Foundation, and Saint Jude’s Hospital. They also sold cookies, handmade bracelets, necklaces, and rings. Taylor Clifford, 7 said, “I wanted to help people that were in need.” Her 4-year-old brother Ryan’s favorite part was, “the cookies!” Lilly, 7, and Alexander Foord Jr., 8, said, “We loved selling the lemonade and bracelets and collecting the money. We were happy the money went to help people.” Kylie Stephenson, 7, agreed, saying, “It feels good to be able to help people.” Brooklyn Sterni, 7, said, “I loved serving the people lemonade with my best friends and making all the money for the families of sick kids that need it.” Her brother Jax, 8, enjoyed, “seeing his friends riding up on their bikes to buy lemonade.”

E

Eleonora Romaniello of Roseland, who grew up in Florence, Italy, has published her first bilingual Italian/English children’s book, called Lezioni Di Volo/Flight Lessons. Her goal was to write a bilingual book to help multicultural families like hers, introduce a second language to children at an early age. Since the book is written in two languages, the child hears each reader tell the story in their own language, with their own accent. After hearing it read many times in both languages, the child begins to discern many of the words bilingually. In addition, the book, which is geared for children ages 3-10, includes vocabulary words for children to memorize as they learn to read in two languages. They also learn valuable lessons. The story follows the Robin family as they overcome challenges together, inspiring readers of all ages to embrace new experiences, face fears, and spread their wings. Eagle Scout’s Flag Pole Project Stands Proud at Walker’s Pond

J

Jake Montano, 18, who attends West Essex High School, and is a Boy Scout in Troop 1 North Caldwell, recently completed his patriotic Eagle Project where he installed a flag pole at Walker’s Pond in North Caldwell. He worked on his project for two-and-a-half months and said it took a lot of planning including meeting with town engineers and presenting his plan at a Town Hall meeting. The pole will last through all kinds of weather, while holding up the American Flag. He says he is proud to be representing the USA with his endeavor, and that, “it is really nice to drive by, see it, and say ‘I did that.’” He is thankful to everyone who donated time, labor, materials including bags, and money to his effort. Jake will be presented with his Eagle Rank at the Eagle Court of Honor later this fall.

West Orange Teen Wins Silver Medal at USA Fencing Summer Nationals

N

Nate Nardini, 13, of West Orange, won the Silver Medal in the Y-12 Men’s Saber division at the 2023 USA Fencing Summer Nationals, and finished the season ranked #9 nationally in the division. The teen, who has been fencing since he was 5, trains 12-16 hours, four days a week, at the Cobra Fencing Club in Jersey City. He competes in many local and national tournaments every year. Nate says that fencing is a solo sport requiring a lot of physical and mental training, as well as strategic skill and focus to determine how to beat your opponent. “It is like physical chess,” says Nate’s father Paul Nardini. Nate, who would like to fence in the Olympics one day, says he is, “super excited with the results and has a new sense of focus and drive to win the gold medal next time.”

West Orange Youth Publishes First Book

W

Writing books is in his genes. Joel N. Cornwall, 5 years old, of West Orange, is a very young author of a book he created with his mom, children’s book author, Virtuous N. Cornwall. The book, Roar Like Joel, is part of a series they are planning, called, The Chronicles of Joel. It is a creative and fun interactive story based on a dinosaur game Joel enjoys playing with his mom. Virtuous says it is a simple book that will keep young children engaged. Joel, who was reading fluently by the age of 4, is very excited about the book and is already planning his next one about the greatest superhero. His first book signing will be at the Source of Knowledge bookstore in NJ. The book is available on Amazon and also on his mom’s website www.vncbooks.com

JLOSH IS USHERING IN A NEW GENERATION of Empowering Women

T

The Junior League of the Oranges and Short Hills (JLOSH) is much more than a junior league – it is a community, a sisterhood, and an organization of women seeking to advance meaningful community action. Since its founding in 1913, JLOSH has been dedicated to supporting families and their children residing in East Orange, Orange, West Orange, South Orange, Maplewood, Millburn, Livingston, Springfield and Short Hills. JLOSH’s long history of service and commitment to volunteerism and community leadership has led to it becoming a critical partner to many community-based organizations in its service area. The goal of the group is to support other organizations that are already giving back. JLOSH doesn’t try to create its own programs, rather, it reaches out to established groups and asks, “How can we support you?” In doing so, JLOSH has created many wonderful and fulfilling partnerships over the years. The group is committed to being inclusive and representative of the diverse communities it serves. They welcome and value women of all races, identities, abilities, economic statuses and belief systems, who align with the JLOSH mission. JLOSH believes that a sense of belonging empowers people to serve and lead across differences effectively. JLOSH’s members feel inspired to be the best versions of their authentic selves. The group continuously develops members’ greater cultural awareness and competency to better support one another and the communities served.

BY JACKIE SCHATELL One member who knows this very well is Victoria Gray, the incoming 2024-2025 President of JLOSH. She says that the group “saved her life.” She had moved to NJ after going through the (im)perfect storm of a very painful divorce, job loss, and housing insecurity. She knew no one. She had heard of the Junior League in Alabama, where she was from, but as a woman of color, the group was by invitation only and not one she was invited to join. However, she was pleased to learn that JLOSH was an inclusive and warm environment that accepted her immediately. She made many friends and developed a great support system of women who continually called to check on her, and offer her help and friendship. She grew to love JLOSH and the women in the group, and is thrilled to be leading them into a future that is ripe with opportunity, relationship building, and most of all – giving back. This past spring, JLOSH members wore the same black dress to work for five days straight in solidarity of the income disparity of women of color and other minorities in the workforce. Doing so symbolized women having to make the choice to put food on the table, rather than buy another outfit for work. They also donated to Dress for Success and continually serve Saturday meals at houses of faith, where they take the time to get to know the people they are helping. This November, JLOSH will be donating 550 Thanksgiving baskets with full dinners and all the trimmings to families of Orange Public Schools. To learn about membership, go to jlosh.org.

Ally’s Elves

BRINGS JOY OVER THE HOLIDAYS

A

BY JACKIE SCHATELL

Alana “Ally” Drost, 19, of Verona enjoys making people smile. Ever since making routine social visits with her speech therapist to seniors at a long-term care facility, combined with weekly visits to her grandmother at an assisted-living facility, Ally has been on a mission to spread joy by creating and hand-delivering holiday cards to seniors. Ally created Ally’s Elves in 2018 with just a few friends and family members (her “Elves”) making holiday cards that Ally hand delivered. She did this for a few years, with increased growth from year to year. In 2022, she took it to a larger scale, booked space at the Verona Community Center Annex, and opened the event to the public. Together, the Elves created over 400 cards for distribution by Ally and her friends to seniors at local assisted living and long-term care facilities. The festive cards were made for people celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanza, with a goal of bringing holiday joy to those most in need. Each year, Ally and her team have challenged themselves to provide more cards than the year before. In Ally’s words, “More cards mean more cheer!” This year, Ally and her squad have reserved the Ballroom at the Verona Community Center, and expect an even bigger turnout at this inclusive, free of charge event, which will be held on Saturday, December 9th, from 11am-3pm. Guests will enjoy holiday music, a bake sale, and a visit from Santa. “Ally’s Elves is an inclusive community endeavor designed to spread holiday cheer by bringing individuals of all ages and abilities together in a common space, with a common goal,” says Ally’s mom, Jeananne Drost. “All people need to do is show up and be ready to create. All supplies and ambience will be provided to bring out the creative genius in every card-maker, ages 1-99.”

Always mindful of community inclusion and togetherness, last year’s event included pre-printed card messages for those who might benefit from that opportunity, as well as card decorations donated by Verona middle school students. This year’s event sees the addition of a sensory-friendly quiet space, as well as a transition to accessible visual branding. “I have been amazed at how much thought and effort people put into creating their cards,” says Jeananne. “This is an event about giving, and I believe people are truly happy to take a small amount of time out of their day to share a part of themselves with someone who will receive their creation with overwhelming gratitude. It’s a very special connection.” Ally, who has Down syndrome, stays active and involved in her community. A competitive swimmer, she competes yearly in the Special Olympics, and was a member of the Verona High School swim team for two years. She also runs every Sunday with her dad and participates in local 5K races. After graduating Banyan High School in Little Falls earlier this year, Ally has moved on to attend their 18-21 transition program. “Ally has a huge heart and is a beautiful soul,” says Jeananne. “I love that she has this project to look forward to each year, although it really is just an extension of the joy and love she spreads inherently, year-round.” Follow Ally’s Elves on Facebook and Instagram @AllysElves. When Shingles Strike—The Unseen Suffering Local Acupuncturist is treating shingles and post shingles complications with amazing results! Mothers have described it as a “pain worse than labor,” others compare it to passing a kidney stone. Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is a complication following a bout of shingles and is often ranked in the top 5 most painful things a human can experience in their lifetime. Affecting more than 18% of shingles patients, PHN causes you to experience the pain of active shingles for longer than 3 months, and in some cases, years after the rash has dissipated. Tracy M. of Montclair shares her story. “I had been diagnosed with shingles, and I thought it would be like the flu or any other virus. I’d have it and then get over it. Two months later, the blisters were gone but the pain was so intense, I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t bear the fabric of my loose blouse touching my skin. No painkiller or medication can ease the pain, it was so intense, I wanted to jump out of my own skin.” During shingles, the virus injures nerves in and around the skin where the rash and blisters occur. Your immune system eventually suppresses the virus and the rash and blisters disappear. Unfortunately, nerve damage often disrupts the function of your nervous system and the damaged nerves send random, uncontrolled pain signals to the brain causing lasting, debilitating pain. “I couldn’t sleep,” said Tracy, almost in tears. “I was always in pain. I couldn’t get out of the house. I thought it was going to kill me.” PHN pain has been described as burning, throbbing, stabbing, and even gnawing. Even worse, it has a tendency to escalate to unbearable levels, episodes that Tracy referred to as ‘seizures.’ “You can actually feel them coming on, so you know you’re about to be in major pain and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

“Our ATP BioResonance Therapy* is the real winner here,” tells Dr Aleksandra. “ATP treats PHN twofold. It both eradicates residual shingles virus which reduces future episodes, and it aids in repairing damaged nerves. Nerves have the ability to regenerate and repair on their own, our ATP therapy ensures and supercharges that process.” It should also be noted that if ATP BioResonance Therapy is used to treat an active case of shingles, the lifespan of the active virus and the chances that you’ll develop PHN reduce significantly. In asking Tracy, “What do you think would’ve happened if you never found Dr. Aleksandra?” Her only response was, “that’s for a different conversation.” Dr Aleksandra elaborates, “as a person, you can only handle so much pain. Tracy is on the other side of this now and to me, that’s most important.” If you or a loved one is experiencing the pain of an active shingles outbreak or is now suffering from postherpetic neuralgia, Dr Aleksandra and the staff at Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine clinic are here to help. Visit SashaAcupuncture.com for more information or call 973-444-8932 to schedule an appointment for an initial consultation. There is hope.

Sasha Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine 119 Grove Street, Montclair | 973-444-8932 www.SashaAcupuncture.com

This pain can gradually go away, return intermittently, or in the worst cases, be with you for the rest of your life. Tracy wasn’t willing to take that chance and sought the expertise of Dr Aleksandra Mihajlovic, DTCM, LAc of Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine. “Sadly, we have seen an increase in PHN cases both at our clinic in Montclair, and the clinics of my colleagues across the country. My PHN patients are some of the most tragic cases I’ve seen. The pain these people experience is just beyond words. Fortunately I am able to offer them real hope!” “I started going for treatment and it kept getting better. After about a month I told Dr Aleksandra, ‘I’m going to play golf & tennis again,’” shared Tracy. “It’s changed my life.” While Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine specializes in acupuncture (it’s in their name after all), it’s the ‘integrative medicine’ part of the practice that’s a hole-in-one when treating PHN.

Take in Some Great Shows at Luna Stage This Season

L

Luna Stage in West Orange has a lot of great shows on the roster for 2023-2024. The Theater develops and produces vibrant plays about local and global experiences and brings communities together for artistic events that spark conversations and create understanding and change.

In addition, Trich, by Becca Schneider, will be at the Luna 2 stage in early December, with a regional premiere. Becca is a teenage girl with a secret in plain sight that no one wants to talk about. Years later, she’s still grappling with the consequences. Trich tells an intimate, surprisingly funny story about mental health, isolation, and forging a path toward recovery.

Don’t miss the world premiere of Westphalia, by Helen Banner, which will run on the Mainstage through midNovember. In a wild new robotic economy, AI determines people’s right to buy or sell their own citizenship. A family descended from the Pilgrims has fallen on hard times. Will they be allowed to cash out and go somewhere new? An imaginative, surprising perspective on national borders and our own humanity.

ART OF ESSEX

A

As a child growing up in Detroit, he always seemed to know how to frame a good photograph with his Kodak Instamatic. But it was always just a casual interest as he grew up. He became an ordained rabbi in 1977 and in 1979 Kushner became the rabbi of Congregation Ner Tamid, whose members come primarily from Bloomfield, Glen Ridge and Montclair, served it until he retired in 2018. As he approached a well-earned retirement, Kushner found that the interest he’d always casually had in photography, not only reawakened, but with a passion. Encouraged by people like Eric Levin, an editor at New Jersey Monthly, himself a celebrated fine art photographer, Kushner found that the making of fine art photographs was more than just a hobby. Inspired by Street Photographers like the late Robert Frank, and an innate curiosity about finding the beauty in inanimate objects, “Things” he says, “that other people probably wouldn’t photograph”, he can be found on an almost daily basis making photographs that have been exhibited in galleries and in online fine art photography publications. In Reaching For The Light, captured digitally in the early days of the pandemic lock down, Kushner examines a bouquet of tulips found in the kitchen of his house. It’s classic Kushner, the flowers a bit past their prime, past when most people would pay much attention to them, and yet he finds the rich colors and the exquisite natural window light an essay in elegance and beauty.

Steven Kushner Discovering a Second Career as an Artist — STORY AND PORTRAIT PHOTO BY DAN EPSTEIN —

Reaching For The Light

Kushner periodically finds himself in the Lackawanna Terminal in Hoboken. Using his love of watching people in public places, and perfect timing, in Haredi Family, he captures an orthodox Jewish family with four children. Captured digitally in October 2022, he’s found a magical moment. The children are caught in absolutely typical children’s postures, while the father gives a knowing glance. Again, the light effect is beautiful as it dances through the father’s hat and beard, the whole scene awash with rich evocative colors.

Haredi Family

While staying with friends in New England during the summer of 2022, Kushner was simply walking down the hall, when he glanced into an extra room in his host’s home. Struck by the a somewhat hap-hazard arrangement, in this context every object seems, in Kushner’s still life, perfectly placed. He says he was immediately struck by the play of light and shadow, and immediately went back to his room to retrieve a Leica, and make this digital capture. This image, Dressing Room-Belfast Maine, was recently given a Best In Category Award in the Ocean County Artists Guild’s prestigious yearly photo exhibition. During a recent trip to Liberty State Park, once again he has captured the magic that happens when light and color coincide. He’s captured a breathtaking interplay of natural forms, and contrast between the ominous clouds, and the delicacy of the grasses in the breeze in Dark Clouds. See more of Kushner’s remarkable photographs on his website, and hear him speak at the Montclair Art Museum on November 17 when he’s part of a panel of artists sponsored by Aging In Montclair.

GIFT GIVING SIMPLIFIED Smith & Co. Welcomes the Holidays

W

BY JANIS HASHE, PHOTO BY DAN EPSTEIN

When Lisa Smith opened Smith & Co. 16 years ago, she had a specific vision in mind: Gift Giving Simplified! Gifts for babies, kids, teens, ladies’ accessories, guys & home! A store where there was something for everyone and that provided the warm customer service so hard to find today. Her success proves she’s made her vision real. With the holiday season here, Smith & Co. offers a wide selection of ideal gifts—and maybe a few treasures for gift givers. “The ladies’ accessories section has taken on a life of its own,” said Smith, gold filled, and sterling Jewelry from Enewton Designs is on fire! “It’s perfect for today’s lifestyle, you can swim, gym & shower, it’s live proof,” she stated. Also, handbags continue to trend, “For example, our Think Royln line continues to grow and you’ll never beat our price. Our babies/kids department is hugely popular, as is the select men’s corner,” Smith adds. Smith & Co. carries the full selection of Thymes home fragrance bath & bodycare. This time of year, “Frasier Fir” is most popular! The woodsy, welcoming aroma of “Frasier Fir” fills the air with

warmth and joy. “Also sought-after for the season are custom charcuterie boards and initial bare ware. It’s all about the bar cart,” says Smith. “Although it’s unconventional,” Smith said, we close on Black Friday as we prepare for Sparkling Saturday when the full holiday inventory is revealed! This also happens to be nationally recognized as Small Business Saturday. “Every 25th customer receives a gift,” Smith said. “Our customers are 100 percent loyal. We know them well, and we love to reward them. Our philosophy is to provide superior customer service, selection, and value… all with a friendly smile”!

Little Palms Soft Play Equipment is All the Rage for Under Age 5 Parties!

K

Karlene Palmer-McLeod knows how to plan parties! After all, she has been an experiential marketing professional specializing in large-scale consumer events for many years. However, when the pandemic hit—she was forced to pivot and create her own children’s event business called Little Palms Soft Play, a rental company that provides soft play equipment for children ages 0-5. Soft play provides a fun and sensory environment in a gated area to keep little crawlers safe.

Karlene Palmer-Mcleod

The custom-made soft foam products are great for any occasion—birthday parties, weddings, mitzvahs—even mommy and me events, and playdates and more. In addition, the equipment, which is fully sanitized after every use, is functional for indoors and outdoors under parental supervision. Karlene says the ball pit is the crowd pleaser and is great for stimulating gross motor skills and movement in a safe environment. The best part is having this set up in your home or event space, and then cleaned up by the team. The items can be ordered as mix and match packages off the website. In addition, if someone wants a particular theme, Karlene can customize by color, and add decals with names and characters. She also offers oneof-a-kind products and is always increasing and updating her inventory to fit trends. Little Palms delivers to the NY and NJ tri-state area.

JEWELER A LONG HISTORY OF SUCCESS AND CUSTOMER SATISFACTION BY SUE BALDANI, PHOTOS BY DAN EPSTEIN

W

What started with Walter O. Bauman’s grandfather selling wholesale watches and jewelry in 1868 led to what are today three very successful jewelry stores in West Orange, Fairfield, and Boonton. After joining his grandfather in business in 1935, Walter O. Bauman eventually opened his first retail store, Walter Bauman Jewelers, in West Orange in 1960. His mission was to offer reasonably priced, high-quality items and to develop longterm relationships with customers. Those goals have definitely been achieved.

(continued on the next page)

November 2023 | SuburbanEssex.com | 33

Your Personal Jeweler (continued from the previous page)

All these years later, the three stores are still family-owned and operated. “We get to know generations of customers, which is amazing,” says his grandson, Walter Bauman, who now runs the stores with his brother, Russell. “My grandfather sold to his customers, and then my father and aunts sold to their kids, and now we’re selling to their kids, which is fun. In some instances, my family has sold engagement rings, wedding bands, baby gifts, etc., to multiple generations of a single family as they celebrate life’s memorable moments.” The stores’ employees have also been with them for many years. “Some have been here for 35-plus years, so they know what they’re doing and understand our customers. Nobody can compete with us on that.” Another thing that is hard to compete with is its selection of one-of-a-kind estate jewelry, which is always in

34 | Suburban Essex | November 2023

high demand. “We have gemologists, appraisers, diamond and other experts who enable us to find the best estate jewelry,” says Walter. “We then offer it at the best prices.” The business is also one of the most reputable gold buyers in New Jersey.

Something else that is quite unique is the 15-day money-back guarantee or store credit. “If a husband is buying a gift for his wife, we want to make sure she’s happy with it. It doesn’t do us any good to have it sit in a drawer. We want her to show it off.”

Watches are a big seller, too, and many of them are part of the estate jewelry collection. Customers can purchase highend, pre-owned watches such as Rolexes and Omegas. “Our showroom is huge, and we also have a full repair department with multiple jewelers, watchmakers, silversmiths, and designers.” If customers cannot find exactly what they want in the showroom, Walter Bauman Jewelers’ master jewelers can help them to custom design their perfect piece. Walter Bauman Jewelers offers a one-year guarantee for any repairs on its merchandise as well. Walter’s wife, Kerry, is also part of the family business, and Kerry’s Corner is another unique offering at the West Orange Store. “A few years ago, we got into costume jewelry because people wanted fashion-forward jewelry, but maybe they didn’t want to pay hundreds of dollars for it,” says Walter. “People just love it.” For these reasons and more, Walter Bauman Jewelers has been voted the

Extracurricular Activities

A

A school experience goes beyond lessons learned in the classroom. Part of what helps shape well-rounded students are the skills they sharpen and memories they make while engaging in extracurricular activities. Extracurricular involvement shows that students can stick with activities for extended periods of time, indicates they have passions and interests, and illustrates that they can take initiative outside of their schoolwork.

THEATER: Students can participate in theater productions after school. It’s possible to get involved both in front of the curtain and behind with positions in the cast, crew and even promotional team.

ARTS ACTIVITIES: These can include painting, sketching, ceramics, jewelrymaking, and yarn work.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLUBS: Students may want to expand on their foreign language studies by participating in language clubs. Often these clubs include learning more about the cultures where specific languages are spoken, including exploring cusine and possible travel.

BAND OR CHORUS: Music instruction is ideal for those who want to explore a passion for singing or playing an instrument.

36 | Suburban Essex | November 2023

NEWSPAPER: Many schools still produce student-led newspapers in print or digital versions. Students handle all of the roles, from reporting, editing, photography, and managing the publication.

PHILANTHROPY: Like-minded students may want to participate in school-organized volunteer activities. These keep students busy, but also benefit recipients in many ways. Activities can include beach sweeps or volunteering at animal shelters. CODING AND PROGRAMMING: Students can learn the basics of writing code and building computer applications or websites. CULINARY ARTS: Some schools may be equipped with kitchen facilities and still offer elective courses in culinary arts, while others may reserve cooking classes to extracurricular activities. If a school does not have a culinary club, chances are students can find a cooking class offered through a private group.

ROCK ON!

At The School of Rock Montclair

A

BY CHRISTINE S. MAXWELL

At the School of Rock Montclair, students of all ages learn music fundamentals and performance techniques learning to play iconic rock songs. Instructors are professional musicians with extensive performance backgrounds. Kevin March, General Manager, explains the School of Rock’s Performance Program. Designed for students ages 8-18, its goal is to help students gain the skills and confidence needed to perform live at local venues and support their personal musical journey. Many students go on to study at premier music schools and colleges. The Performance Program uses their patented Song-First Method. It consists of a weekly ninety-minute group session where students are put into bands for rehearsal. They also have a weekly private lesson with their instructor to work on the songs they’re cast in. “This song-first approach allows the students to learn the musical components and performance elements of each song,” states March. After rehearsing for a three-or-four month season, students perform live at local venues. The next Performance Program concerts will be in January 2024 at Just Jakes and Pineapple Express Barbeque in Montclair. The School of Rock offers three seasons of Performance Programs—Fall, Spring, and Summer. Each season uses different themes, with varying levels of students and prepares students to performance and pursue their musical dreams.

A Holistic and Progressive Philosophy AT SERENITY MONTESSORI ACADEMY

I

In 2016, Sarah Colucci, a Montessori educator of 33 years, opened Serenity Montessori Academy in Verona with just one student and a big dream. Seven years later, the school has developed an excellent reputation in West Essex, filled to capacity with yearly waitlists. SMA’s core belief aligns with the philosophy of early 20th-century educator Dr. Maria Montessori, who believed that “each child is born with an absorbent mind, with tremendous ability to learn through their environment without conscious effort.” According to Sarah, “Serenity is a progressive Montessori program that celebrates individuality and creates confident learners through positivity, encouragement, and guidance in a prepared learning environment. They learn by “ doing,” and we follow their natural curiosity.” Grace and courtesy lessons are the cornerstone to our daily interactions. This creates order, patience, and mutual respect among peers and teachers. Daily Montessori lessons coupled with tactile explorations of Montessori manipulative creates an incredible exploratory environment for thriving students at SMA. In addition, SMA has weekly visiting instructors in music, yoga, Italian, and dance to fully develop the whole child. Serenity Montessori Academy accepts children from ages 2.56 years old. We are currently accepting applications for the 2024-2025 school year. Please contact Sarah for a school tour.

Mount St. Dominic Academy, the independent, Catholic college preparatory school for young women in Caldwell, marked The International Day of the Girl with a United Nations field trip and an assembly that welcomed Sarah Osembo, Co-Founder and CEO of Enda Athletic, Inc., as a guest speaker. The IDG Summit’s theme was “Invest in Girls’ Rights: Our Leadership and Wellbeing.” In today’s environment, the Mount feels it is more important than ever to come together to support women and girls in our society. Mrs. Christine Victori, who leads the Mount’s signature L.E.O. entrepreneurship program, accompanied 16 Mount students to the Summit, including Erin Araneta ‘24, of West Orange, the Mount’s Secretary of Inclusion who was chosen as a Summit moderator.

Secretary of Academics at MSDA Ava Ciauro ‘24, of North Caldwell said, “Girls are breaking boundaries and barriers posed by stereotypes and exclusion, including those directed at children with disabilities and those living in marginalized communities.” Gabby Chipelo ‘24, of Nutley, said, “The table itself is rigged, it was never meant for us. We need to recognize that the system was never going to be fair for us. It will never be equal, and because of that, we need to create a new table. Destroy the table we already have. Create a system that benefits everyone.” Mrs. Victori was impressed with the students’ takeaways and said, “I always say that in my world— they are change-makers!”

Discovering Your Dharma

R

BY NICOLE BEEKMAN-ZORNITZER

Recently I have been exploring the concept of Dharma. So many of us are intimidated by the word DHARMA. Dharma is often associated with someone who has mastered “life,” someone who has found a revered Guru, someone whom you need to travel to India or remote Islands to meet. We need to demystify the concept of Dharma and its meaning; why you may ask? Because dharma is attainable for all of us, in fact it is right in front of our jaded eyes if we understand what dharma is. I must accredit my newfound knowledge to a fellow Ayurvedic practitioner, Sahara Rose. Like me (and possibly many of you), she struggled for years trying to meet the expectations that were placed within her as a young woman and then through cultural conditioning. When we STOP for a few moments and realize WHY we are pursing perceived societal success and rather listen to our heart strings, we just may find the answers we are seeking. Finding ultimate contentment is not as difficult as it may seem, however what is a requirement, is to release the impact of what other’s opinion may have on you. What is necessary, is to listen to the subtle voices you hear in your mind’s eye, those voices you hear when you are alone and vulnerable to truth. What is required, is STRENGTH, this strength is necessary at moments to continue the path that you know is “right for you” as opposed to the path that others think is proper. Trust me, you will find those that will not support your mission, those that are naive to the concept of dharma or happiness, those who simply do not understand; IGNORE THEM! I can say for certain that I have

always traveled the more difficult path, a trail that has had extreme difficulties and a terrain that was certainly not clear, with a known destination. However, what I have experienced is that my intuition or spirit guides may know more than my over stimulated, influenced mind may have given me. Yoga, meditation, self-study, and honesty brought me to the living in the NOW. Happiness is living life the way you want to live life and sometimes, that means aborting what is expected of us by others, sometimes it means leaving a career, a relationship, a store, a restaurant. Other times it is simply resting in the knowledge that you need to trust yourself and your life’s trajectory.

My dharma/purpose is to create others to question, to create disruption, inquire about every moment, every person, every event in one’s life. Evaluate if each moment is bringing you closer to YOU. Discover that finding your dharma is not so intangible as we may have perceived, dharma IS TRUE HAPPINESS. When we are living in alignment with our dharma, there is no separation between the outer and inner you. Trust me… you can’t go wrong.

Discover Healing with EMDR Therapy

I

at the Discovery and Wellness Center

In the quest for mental wellness and the healing of traumatic memories, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy emerges as a transformative approach, and it’s a pivotal part of the therapeutic toolkit at the Discovery and Wellness Center. But what exactly is EMDR, and how can it usher in a new horizon of healing for individuals grappling with various psychological stresses? EMDR is an integrative psychotherapeutic approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma. This innovative therapy is characterized by its standardized protocols that involve directing the patient’s eye movements while they recall distressing images or feelings, working through a multi-phase process to reach comprehensive treatment. However, EMDR therapy isn’t confined to trauma; its scope extends to a plethora of mental health conditions. Individuals suffering from panic disorders, anxiety, depression, and stress-

related issues have found solace and recovery through EMDR. It’s particularly renowned for its effectiveness in treating posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), helping patients process and integrate traumatic memories into their mental framework in a less distressing way. Moreover, it aids in the desensitization of current triggers that stem from past traumatic events. At the Discovery and Wellness Center, our certified therapists are well-versed in employing EMDR therapy to catalyze the healing process. By reprocessing past traumatic experiences, we help our clients unlock the door to a balanced and harmonious mental state, empowering them to rediscover tranquility and wellness in their lives.

Invisalign Clear Aligners

I

for Orthodontic Treatment

Invisalign, a groundbreaking solution in orthodontic treatment, offers individuals an alternative to traditional braces with its clear, custom-made aligners. “Invisalign aligners are not only virtually invisible but also custommolded for each patient, providing a comfortable, convenient treatment experience,” explains Dr. Eric Sacks of Sacks Orthodontics, a board-certified orthodontist and Diamond Plus Invisalign provider passionate about modern dental solutions. Children, teens and adults can all benefit from Invisalign, making it a versatile choice for correcting various dental concerns, including crooked teeth, a bad bite, overbite, underbite, open bite, crossbite, and gaps. It is particularly favored among adults for its discreet and removable nature, allowing for subtle, convenient teeth straightening.

Dr. Sacks emphasizes the importance of consulting with an orthodontic specialist with extensive experience with the Invisalign system. “A detailed assessment of your unique situation is critical. At Sacks Orthodontics, we use advanced 3D imaging technology to create a precise treatment plan tailored to your unique needs,” he says. This personalized approach ensures each set of aligners effectively shifts your teeth over time, with each set typically worn for 1 week at a time. Multiple sets of trays are given at a time so office visits are generally only required every 10-14 weeks. For optimal results, Dr. Sacks recommends wearing the aligners for 20-22 hours daily, removing them only eating, drinking (anything other than water) and dental hygiene. “The beauty of Invisalign lies in its convenience. The aligners are removable, allowing patients to enjoy their favorite foods and maintain proper oral hygiene with ease,” he adds.

Dr. Eric Sacks

In summary, Invisalign stands out as an innovative orthodontic treatment, option and specialty offices like Sacks Orthodontics are at the forefront, ensuring patients receive effective, discreet, and customized care in their journey to a confident smile.

If you have diabetes and are experiencing changes in your vision, you may have diabetic retinopathy. Dr. Kurt Jackson of Jackson Eye Care has the expertise required to provide you with the quality care needed to protect the health of your eyes and vision.

What is Diabetic Retinopathy? Diabetic retinopathy is a diabetes-related complication affecting the eyes. It’s caused by damage to the blood vessels of the retina—the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. As high blood sugar levels from diabetes can damage these vessels, they may leak fluid or swell, leading to distorted vision or even blindness if left untreated.

What are some of the symptoms of Diabetic Retinopathy? Common symptoms include blurry or fluctuating vision, dark or empty areas in vision, seeing floaters or dark strings floating in the visual field, change in color vision, and worsening night vision. As the condition progresses, it may cause vision loss.

Early detection and management of diabetes are key to preventing diabetic retinopathy. Treatment depends on the severity and may involve laser. Injections into the eye or a surgical procedure called vitrectomy might also be needed in advanced cases. Regular eye examinations are crucial for those with diabetes to catch and treat this condition early.

Lose Weight, Feel Great A NEW PROGRAM WITH MULTIPLE BENEFITS

S

BY SUE BALDANI, PHOTO BY DAN EPSTEIN Since March of this year, Montclair Rejuvenation Center in Verona and West Caldwell implemented an exciting new weight-loss program for its clients. By using a medication called Semaglutide, the medical spa is helping people slim down and get healthy. “It’s been around for years and was originally used to treat diabetics. but they found that people who took it were losing weight,” says co-owner, Dr. Kelly Distefano. “So now we’re using a compounded version of it for our clients to help lose weight. It works by lowering blood sugar levels and delaying gastric emptying, which makes people feel fuller longer.” Her husband and co-owner, Edward Fritz, who manages the business side of the practice, tried it and has lost 30 pounds over three months. He has since kept that weight off and continues to feel great. “Since the program has begun, the vast majority of patients have seen good results,” says Dr. Kelly. “This allows our patients to basically hit the reset button by getting to their desired weight, learning new lifestyle habits, and maintaining that desired weight.” Semaglutide is given by injection. “Injections are once a week, so patients get four shots in a month,” she says. “We also provide a B12 shot every two weeks for energy. After every two to three months that a patient is on the program, we send them to do blood work to make sure everything is normal.” Clients are weighed every week and also undergo a full body scan, which does a muscle fat analysis and shows their BMI, basal metabolic rate, and visceral fat level. So patients are not just losing weight, they’re also seeing the other changes going on in their bodies.

Do you suffer from dry, itchy eyes? You may have a common ailment known as dry eyes. Over-the-counter remedies may offer some temporary relief. However, according to Saras Rustagi, O.D., of Upper Montclair Eye Care and Wear, several treatments can effectively treat the problem of dry eye. “Overthe-counter medications address Dr. Saras Rustagi the symptoms, but not cause of dry eye. Our treatments address the root of the problem and offer long-term relief,” says Dr. Rustagi. One treatment is state-of-the-art light therapy. The IPL Light Therapy is the only FDA-approved therapy that removes the inflammation, providing long-term relief without using drugs or drops. Dr. Rustagi explains that the eye tears consist of oil, water, and salt. Tears evaporate quickly when the oil in the eye is compromised. Without the inflammation, the oil glands can produce the moisture needed to promote healthy tearing. In addition to its anti-inflammatory properties, the treatment often has added benefits for healthy, glowing skin. Patients usually need three to four treatments over four months. “Within two to three weeks, patients notice the positive effects of this treatment—from more moisture in the eyes to glowing skin,” says Dr. Rustagi. Approximately fifteen percent of the population suffers from dry eye, and the cases are increasing. Many cases result from aging but also extended screen viewing on computers and other devices. Laser eye surgery may also contribute to the increase in dry eye, as well as environmental factors, such as wind or dry air. “One of the best ways to prevent long-term eye conditions is to get your eyes checked every year. The progress in eye care in the past twenty years has been tremendous, says Dr. Rustagi. “Optometry is now in the front line of eye care. We work with a network of medical providers to ensure the optimal health of your eyes.”

Local Veterans to Receive FREE DENTAL CARE on Veterans’ Smile Day

V

Valley Arts Dental, with offices in Livingston and West Orange, is holding its 4th Annual Veterans’ Smile Day this November, where they will provide free dental care to Veterans in the community. According to Dr. Michael J. Klausner, D.D.S., who says each year, 10-20 Veterans come into the office for the service, “A lot of people think that all Veterans are entitled to free dental care at the VA, but that is not the case. The only Veterans entitled to that service are the ones who are 100% service connected, or if they sustained a direct dental injury as part of their service. This leaves a major void in their oral care and healthcare services.” He says that he learned about this situation while he was in dental school and made it a goal to do what he could to help them. Dr. Klausner says, “In the US, there are almost 23 million Veterans and less than 15% of them qualify for any kind of dental benefits. Our goal is to do a small part by helping these Veterans maintain their oral health. Our Veterans deserve more than our respect and appreciation for the sacrifices they made for our protection and freedom. They deserve access to high-quality healthcare, and that includes dental care.” Valley Arts Dental provides participating Veterans with everything from exams, fillings, and cleanings, to extractions and more. He says he really enjoys this endeavor each year at his office, “It’s a day we all look forward to— it’s a good day at the office!”

PUT YOUR BEST FACE FORWARD Expert advice on looking and feeling your best

R

BY SUE BALDANI, PHOTOS BY DAN EPSTEIN

Dr. Paul Figlia

Restoring facial balance and enhancing beauty should begin with a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon. One such surgeon, Dr. Paul Figlia, is the owner and medical director of Face to Face Medical Spa located at Dieci Lifestyle Spa in Livingston. Here, he gives us some expert advice on achieving the best outcomes.

can also consult patients at his private practice, located at 1500 Pleasant Valley Way, Suite 307, West Orange, NJ, to discuss cosmetic surgical procedures. These procedures may include face and neck lifts, to tighten and lift sagging skin, blepharoplasty, to address sagging or puffy eyelids, and chin augmentation. He also performs breast augmentations and Mommy makeovers, which includes abdominoplasty.

To begin with, he says that understanding the patient’s aesthetic and desired goal is paramount to determining whether non-surgical treatments may work or need surgical intervention. At Face to Face, non-surgical options include the following:

Since a healthy lifestyle contributes to overall well-being and a youthful appearance, he also recommends eating lots of fruits and vegetables, maintaining an exercise routine, maintaining hygiene and grooming, and incorporating mindfulness and stress management into everyday life.

 Dermal fillers, such as RHA (Resilient Hyaluronic Acid), JUVÉDERM®, and Restylane® – add volume, smooth wrinkles, and enhance facial contours.  Botox® – helps reduce wrinkles and fine lines by relaxing facial muscles.  DAXXIFY® (the newest neurotoxin) – for long-lasting frown-line treatment powered by a peptide.  Lasers – address pigmentation, redness and improve skin tone and texture.  Microneedling with radiofrequency in conjunction with PRP (PlateletRich Plasma) – stimulates collagen production and improves skin texture.

 Physiq – body contouring combines heat and energy to reduce fat and tone muscle for all body and skin types. Dr. Figlia is on-site doing consultations, making recommendations, and performing the majority of the invasive non-surgical services. This gives patients peace of mind and beautiful results. For patients who would like to achieve more significant enhancements, Dr. Figlia

“Remember, achieving facial balance and enhancing beauty is a journey that should prioritize your well-being and self-confidence,” he says. “Work closely with trusted professionals, communicate your goals clearly, and make informed decisions to achieve the best possible results.”

Established by Dr. Linda, Gentle Caring Dentistry reflects her lifelong passion for providing quality dental work with compassionate care. Dr. Vanna explained that, “There was never a specific moment I realized I wanted to become a dentist. I was constantly exposed to my mom’s love and passion for her work and soaked it up throughout my childhood.”

Gentle Caring Dentistry’s goal is to provide the highest quality care for each patient in a relaxed setting. Further, they believe in educating their patients. “Taking the time to explain things and involve people into their own treatment decision is so important for helping reduce fear and making sure each patient is getting the right care for them,” remarks Dr. Vanna.

SPARK™ ALIGNERS AND SYMETRI™ CLEAR BRACKETS: An Insight by Dr. Gigi Paralkar of Livingston Family Orthodontics

O

Orthodontic advancements have continually reshaped the experience of achieving a healthier, straighter smile. Among the game-changers in this field are the Spark™ Aligners and Symetri™ Clear Bracket systems. Dr. Gigi Paralkar of Livingston Family Orthodontics offers insights into these two unique offerings for patients wishing a more discreet path to a straighter smile.

Dr. Gigi Paralkar

Spark™ Aligners are designed for more effective and efficient tooth movement compared to the leading aligner brand. Through improved printing resolution and greater surface area of the aligners, there is better contact between the aligners and the teeth. This improved contact leads to shorter treatment times and improved results. For the patient, this translates to a smoother treatment experience with potentially fewer visits. Moreover, Spark ™ Aligners are made using TruGen™ material, which is clearer, more comfortable, and less prone to staining than other aligner brands. For cases requiring braces, Symetri™ Clear braces offer a more subtle approach to orthodontic treatment. Their virtually invisible appearance is attributed to high-quality, transparent ceramic materials. They are particularly appreciated by those who wish for effective alignment without drawing attention to the treatment itself. Dr. Gigi emphasizes the importance of individualized treatment. “Every smile is unique, and while Spark ™ Aligners and Symetri™ Clear Bracket systems offer incredible benefits, it’s essential to approach each case with personalized attention,” she states. In a world where orthodontics continuously evolves, insights from professionals like Dr. Gigi are invaluable. Whether opting for Spark ™ Aligners, Symetri™ Clear Brackets or exploring other avenues, the journey to a radiant smile is a collaborative one between the patient and the orthodontist. At Livingston Family Orthodontics, a smile opens a door.

DISCOVER THE SILVERSTROM GROUP Your Trusted Partner for Comprehensive Dental Care FROM RECONSTRUCTION TO AESTHETICS – THE SILVERSTROM GROUP IS UNRIVALED

W

When a patient enters The Silverstrom Group’s office, they step into a world of state-of-the art innovation and comfort, where well-trained dentists create smiles that shine. The skilled and compassionate team works closely with patients to tailor personalized treatment plans that suit each patient’s unique needs. For those requiring comprehensive dental reconstructions, the team’s expertise is second to none. They specialize in restoring damaged teeth, addressing bite issues, and transforming smiles with precision and care. Whether it’s dental implants, crowns, or full-mouth rehabilitation, the cuttingedge techniques at Silverstrom ensure lasting results and optimal oral health. One of many services performed at the practice is veneers. “Veneers are a popular and highly-effective cosmetic dentistry option for transforming and enhancing the appearance of teeth,” says Dr. Gary Silverstrom. “These ultra-thin, custommade shells, typically made from porcelain or composite resin, are designed to cover the front surface of teeth, concealing a variety of imperfections and delivering a dramatically improved smile.” Veneers are a great option for many reasons. They offer quick results and are minimally invasive. They also provide a natural and beautiful appearance and are custom-made to match the color, shape, and size of patients’ natural teeth. In addition, veneers are durable, resistant to stains, and low maintenance.

IT’S IMPORTANT TO INCLUDE A DENTIST ON YOUR MEDICAL TEAM WHEN TREATING SLEEP APNEA AND TMJ Dr. Amy Tran, a distinguished member of the Silverstrom Group expert team, leads the way in advanced Sleep Apnea Dentistry and TMJ Treatment. Sleep apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. Dr. Amy Tran Symptoms can include snoring, tiredness, and even teeth grinding. While it is treatable, it can lead to long-term health ramifications if not treated properly including GERD, heart attacks, diabetes, and even falling asleep at the wheel. What is interesting about these two conditions is that they can both be caused by obstructed airways. In some cases, TMJ can lead to sleep apnea because the bite doesn’t rest in a natural position, and sleep apnea can lead to TMJ. Dr. Tran says, “Being fitted for a dental device can help alleviate both problems.” The appliance ensures the jaw is properly aligned during sleep, preventing airway obstruction and sleep apnea. Experience excellence in oral healthcare with The Silverstrom Group. Dr. Amy Tran’s expertise in Sleep Apnea Dentistry and TMJ Treatment is just one facet of our commitment to your overall well-being. Trust your smile to the best—book your appointment.

BOTOX IS ENHANCING SMILES AT THE SILVERSTROM GROUP Botox isn’t only used cosmetically to get rid of wrinkles and crow’s feet – dentists use it too. In fact, dentists are specifically trained to treat the muscles and bones in and around the mouth, in addition to treating teeth. At The Silverstrom Group, Botox is used to enhance smiles in Dr. Amrita Patel many ways, and it is often the missing puzzle piece for achieving a picture-perfect smile. Botox works by blocking certain chemical signals from nerves that cause muscles to contract, which in turn relaxes facial muscles. Amrita Patel, DMD, a dentist at The Silverstrom Group, says Botox can be used by dentists for chronic jaw pain, headaches, migraines, neck pain, hyperactive muscles, full mouth

reconstruction, TMJ, Bruxism, dentures that no longer fit due to shifting jaw muscles, and more. She says, “In some instances, instead of needing Botox more often for jaw pain, over time patients may actually need it less because of muscle memory.” In addition, at The Silverstrom Group, Botox is used to fix smiles where too much of one’s gums are exposed. In this instance, Botox is used to keep the upper lip from raising up too high, which enhances patients’ smiles. It is also used to smooth out lines around the mouth. In many instances, Botox provides dramatic results just by improving the appearance of the skin around a smile. While Botox does require the use of tiny needles, Dr. Patel says, “Depending on the patients’ pain tolerance, Botox isn’t painful, it’s a non-invasive way to improve a patient’s overall appearance.”

DIAMOND MINDS

TWO THOUGHTS BEFORE YOU CHOOSE A MENTOR

M

BY BARRY FARBER

Mentors are all around us. It’s always a good idea to have a few wise advisors to run your ideas by that have the experience and expertise to recommend the best path for your situation. But sometimes you have to be very selective about who you choose to follow and where you look for answers. Here are two stories that remind us to look carefully and not to forget about our most powerful source of knowledge.

The Lonely Game of Follow the Follower Years ago, in a small store on Main Street, a shopkeeper placed a large grandfather clock in his front window. The next morning, he saw a man walk by, take out his pocket watch, adjust the watch, put it back in his pocket and walk away. Every single morning for the next four years, the shopkeeper observed this morning ritual. Then one morning the shopkeeper was out sweeping the sidewalk when the man passed by, took out his watch, adjusted it, and put it back in his pocket. “Excuse me,” said the shopkeeper, “but I’ve been watching you do this every morning for four years now. Can you tell me why?” “Certainly,” said the man. “I’m the foreman down at the mill. I blow the quitting whistle at five o’clock every day, and I want to be sure my people get out on time.” “You’re kidding,” said the shopkeeper. “I’ve been setting my grandfather clock to your five o’clock whistle all these years!” The shopkeeper and the mill foreman, like many of us in today’s society, were caught up in a game called “follow the follower.” Instead of conducting our own investigation or finding someone who truly has the qualities we wish to emulate, we take on the group mentality. We want to be ourselves, but we’re afraid to be “different.” There’s nothing inherently wrong with following. It’s one of the best ways to learn. High achievers are constantly studying other people and their methods of accomplishment. The difference is that they are very particular about the people they choose to learn from. They look for people whose values match their own and who have achieved excellence in their field. They surround themselves with models of success.

Maybe You’re Looking in the Wrong Place A Hindu legend says that once upon the Earth all people were gods. However, they abused their powers. Brahma, who was the god of all gods, decided that the devine spirit should be taken away from mankind and hidden away where no one would ever find it and abuse it again. One of Brahma’s gods advised that it be hidden deep beneath the earth. Brahma said, no, man would eventually dig deep enough. Another god said they should sink it to the bottom of the ocean. “No,” said Brahma, “eventually man would learn to dive deep enough.” Another god suggested taking it up to the highest mountain top. “No,” said Brahma again, “for someday man will learn to climb to the highest peak.” The gods were now at a loss and had no more suggestions. “There is nowhere to hide it where man cannot find it,” they said. “Yes, there is,” said Brahma, “We will hide it deep within man himself. He will never think to look for it there.” And ever since then, man has been digging beneath the earth, diving into the ocean, and climbing the highest mountains, looking for what is hidden deep within himself. We can, and should, look to others for aid, advice, and encouragement. But in the end, we must look inside, for it is only there that we will find the spirit of the true achiever. Inside ourselves, in our thoughts, and our hearts, we hold the belief that we can achieve our greatest dreams. We only have to look deep enough.
