Livingston Teens Receive Awards at National FBLA Leadership Conference

Caldwell Studio Offers Low-Tuition Competitive Dance Classes

Hannah Bonaguide’s love of dance had led to her offering low-tuition competitive dance programs at her studio, called Hannah’s Dance Academy, which is located in her hometown of Caldwell. Hannah, who has been dancing since she was two, says growing up, she remembers tuitions being expensive. So, at 15, she set out to open her own dance studio offering a low-tuition program, totaling $25 a month, per student. By the age of 18, she had a studio in her own building – making her dream come true. This year, she is personally working with 50 boys and girls, who are ages three through high school age. The competitive dancers perform in six competitions a year, with many more available as options. “My favorite thing to do is dance. “I wouldn’t offer classes at such reduced prices, if I didn’t love dance so much,” she says. “I am so glad I am helping people, who might be precluded from dancing due to price, be able to dance.” For information, go to: Hannahsdanceacademy.com.

Heritage Middle School students from Livingston made their mark at this year’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) National Leadership Conference, which was held for five days in Atlanta, Georgia. Eighth graders Naisha Singh Bhagashra, Annika Raj, and Anya Dugar secured an impressive 4th place in the Marketing Mix competition with their innovative concept, SpeedyBuy, a GPS technology-based solution that enhances the shopping experience by guiding shoppers to the products or deals they’re seeking in malls or grocery stores.

In another outstanding achievement, Aanya RajSharma, also from Heritage Middle School, clinched the 7th position in the Digital Citizenship objective competition, further enhancing the school’s strong presence at the event.

Naisha says, “In general, the whole competition was an amazing and beautiful experience. People should really join the FBLA club at their school, as it is a great learning experience that teaches you all about confidence, teamwork, business and more.”

Livingston Teen Represents the US In Japan’s Soke Cup International Karate Tournament

Arjun Kapur, 14, of Livingston spent this past year getting tournament ready for the Soke Cup International Karate Tournament in Kumamoto, Japan, where he represented the United States in his division. Having trained in the Chito-Ryu Karate discipline under Sensei Kenneth Frattini since preschool and having competed in local tournaments throughout the years, Arjun was ready for the challenge of competing at the international level. Placed in the 16U division as a 14 year old and being a green belt, he competed against more seasoned and older competitors, including black belts. He earned personal best scores for his kata (form) and gave his best at the kumite (fighting) competition. In addition to karate, he runs and cross trains with his school’s wrestling team. He will continue to train in karate and looks forward to representing the United States in the 2026 Soke Cup in Australia.

Livingston Teen to Offer Free Debate Classes This Fall

Advit Gangwal, of Livingston, will be offering free debate classes for kids in grades 6-8 this fall. This past summer he ran a free public speaking and debate camp called Alpha Debate Club, and prior to that, he ran one last fall. The mission of the program is to spread public forum debate knowledge and experience to younger students including critical life skills, such as: researching, gaining confidence, critical thinking, using teamwork, and time management. Students not only learn about debating – they also compete in local and national tournaments. Advit, who is the President of the Livingston High School Debate Club this year, says that he loves debating and finds it exciting. He says you need to be quick on your feet and be able to prepare for both sides of a debate because you never know which side you will be defending. He adds that this can change from round to round. For information, please send an email to advit.gangwal@gmail.com.

Unique All-Girls Soccer

League

is a Place for Empowerment

NJ Crush FC is much more than an elite soccer club. The all-girls league incorporates mentorship, female empowerment, and volunteerism into each participant’s experience. The players volunteer at soup kitchens, with the elderly, and more. After going through mentor training, the older players then mentor the youngest players. They not only help them gain the skills and confidence they need to play soccer, but they also build lasting relationships with them, acting as sounding boards about onand off-the-field topics. Steph Figurelli, a coach at NJ Crush FC, says “I love it – being with the club for almost ten years speaks volumes. I love that the club is about the player continuing and furthering their career, and the fact that it is an all-female club that fosters empowerment and confidence.”

NJ Crush FC, which operates in Cedar Grove and Mahwah, is open to girls ages 3- 23. For more information, go to: njcrushfc.com

Liberian Resource Center Named After West Caldwell Teen and Her Mother

SSophia Pedrazzi, a senior at James Caldwell High School, has been a philanthropist for most of her life. In 2012, at the age of 6, she founded Sophia’s Funds for Friends to pursue her passion for helping others.

Her charitable spirit began in kindergarten when she accompanied her mom at 5K fundraising events for friends who had children with medical needs. Sophia was curious about how the events helped the families, and wanted to help too.

Inspired by these fundraisers, the West Caldwell teen decided to do her part to help by selling her artwork and donating the profits to these same families and

organizations. She went on to organize annual sales in her front yard, with the help of many friends and community members. They consisted of donated toys, her artwork, handmade crafts, and baked goods. In six years, she raised over $18,000. This money went to the Debra Organization for research and support for people with epidermolysis bullosa and also to assist a family of a son with severe medical needs.

Sophia continues to seek out ways to help others. Last year, Sophia partnered with the Caldwell Rotary Club to organize a successful clothing drive for a Liberian school called Fanawin, and the near-by community. Nearly 30 bags of clothes

were collected and donated after being dropped off at Willing Hearts and the West Caldwell Library.

In the spring of 2023, Sophia worked in partnership with Grover Cleveland Middle School and Lincoln School in the Caldwell West Caldwell School District, to run a school supply drive for the students in Liberia.

Sophia’s connection with Fanawin began when she was in middle school. Her mom met Natt Slober, a cofounder of Fanawin, when he was her Uber driver in the US. She told Sophia about the school, and the teen immediately wanted to help by raising money for school supplies to be donated there.

Due to Sophia’s generosity, Fanawin named their resource center after her and her mom. It is called “The Sophia and Janet Pedrazzi Resource Center.”

Sophia says, “I always try to spread my message of being compassionate, loving, and giving, and I hope to inspire people to make a difference in the lives of others.”

Caldwell Youngsters Learn About Giving Back to Those Who Need it Most

TThe Cederbaums of West Caldwell, Journey, 10, Promise, 7, and Sunny, 7, are learning about giving back at a very young age. They recently donated all the profits from selling homemade bracelets to a charity close to their hearts, called Kekeli, Inc., a non-profit which raises money to assist marginalized groups in Ghana, Africa.

Kekeli, Inc. began in 2007, with a focus on a wide variety of human rights issues and activities including helping people with disabilities, child labor, children of cured lepers, and those who are victims of discrimination. The goal is to raise awareness, increase educational opportunities, and train individuals to participate in economic activities.

Kekeli Foundation was registered in Ghana in 2008, as a related organization to Kekeli, Inc. The Foundation works to create self-advocacy groups to help

young people with disabilities recognize their rights, establish parent self-help groups as a way of encouraging more involvement of their disabled children in their communities, promote the inclusion of people with disabilities within the education system and in society, and use both visual arts and music as a means to achieve greater awareness of human rights issues.

The Cederbaums’ connection to the nonprofit comes from their father, Josh, who is on the Kekeli board. Many years ago, while living in Ghana for six months and teaching there, he met Carrie Brown, the director of Kekeli, Ghana. They stayed in touch over the years, and recently, she asked him to join the board. In addition, Josh and his wife Suzy have been sponsoring children through Kekeli for many years. They like being able to see where the money they donate goes.

“When we send Christmas gifts, we receive photos of the children with them, as well as updates, and sometimes video chat with the children as well,” said Josh. “Even a small donation goes a long way in Ghana.”

Josh’s daughters said their dad gave them the idea to hold the fundraiser and donate to Kekeli. They had been making a lot of bracelets using polymer and glass beads, as well as stones and other items. He suggested selling them and donating the profits. They liked the idea, and in August of 2023, the girls got a table outside of BluLotus in Montclair to have a bracelet sale. They made $725 and donated it all to Kekeli.

Journey said, “It felt good to help people in need.”

“Not everyone is as lucky as we are, so it feels good to do good things for people in need,” echoed Sunny.

“One of the best parts was that we got to have fun and be creative, at the same time, help people in need,” said Promise.

The girls think they will hold another fundraiser soon. In the meantime, if anyone wants to donate to Kekeli, they can do so at: kekeli-ghana.org/, and if they’d like to purchase a bracelet, with the money donated to Kekeli, they can send an email to SuzyKekeli@gmail.com.

Living Life AFTER COVID

“I have two words for Long Covid—the worst,” shares Jason G. of Essex Fells, NJ. While the initial alarm of the Covid-19 outbreak has subsided, the pandemic is ongoing. The spread may have slowed but we continue to feel the long-term impacts. Nearly 23 million Americans (100 million people globally) have learned that regardless of the severity of their initial infection, they may continue to experience debilitating symptoms for weeks, months, or even years. In a number of cases, these symptoms worsen with time, even turning deadly.

“I got Covid early last year, and it was pretty bad,” shares Jason. “I was hospitalized for 9 days, and there was a point where I wasn’t sure I would make it. I’m still here, so I guess God had other plans but months passed, and I was still gasping for air. I couldn’t do everyday tasks like cutting the grass or working in the yard, much less enjoy a quick bike ride. And then there was what my doctor called ‘brain fog.’ I’d lose my train of thought mid- sentence or forget words for stupid things like plates and toilet paper. It felt like I’d had a stroke more than like it did a virus.”

Officially dubbed Long Covid, the aftermath of the original virus has taken on life of its own. Dozens of symptoms have been reported, including shortness of breath and cognitive issues to a sudden onset of diabetes, cardiac and cardiovascular issues. These symptoms are so well-documented and common that those suffering now qualify for disability assistance. Unfortunately for

Jason and so many others, the treatment options thus far have been limited.

“I started with my primary care doctor and saw specialist after specialist. A pulmonologist finally told me ‘this is the best we can do for you, it’s time you start thinking about how you’re going to live with Long Covid.’ Apparently, their best was letting me live what felt like half a life.”

Jason wasn’t satisfied with that and resigned himself to doing his own research, which is how he ended up here Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine

“I fully believe the human body has the ability to heal itself, but sometimes it needs a little push. I’ve used acupuncture in the past to help me through a bout of sciatica and just knew if anyone could help me with this Long Covid business, it was going to be acupuncturist, Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic DTCM L.Ac.”

You might think that a novel virus needs a novel solution, but you’d only be half right.

While we are using innovative solutions like ATP Bioresonance Therapy” to combat Long Covid because it aids in the healing and repair of specific cells and tissues, it’s a much more time-tested science that’s getting our patients back to living their lives.

Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine is the premier provider of ozone therapy in the state.

“Our 03 Renewing Therapy® has allencompassing and powerful healing

capabilities,” shares Dr. Aleksandra. “Ozone therapy has been used since the 1800s and was actually a popular tool for doctors during the first world war because of its antibacterial. antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. We use it today to deactivate residual Covid virus, stimulate oxygen metabolism and activate the immune system. And the whole treatment takes about 15 minutes and is completely noninvasive.”

As with our other services, 03 Renewing Therapy® requires consistent and repeated treatment to achieve measurable and long-lasting results.

“I’m in my second month of treatment and back to riding my bike and maybe: breathing better than before I even had Covid. Everyone has been amazing! I feel cared for every time I walk in the door of the Sasha Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine office.”

Dr. Aleksandra Mihajlovic DTCM L.Ac. has successfully treated chronic pain and complicated conditions for over a decade. When Covid-19 emerged three years ago, we researched and developed therapies to address the complex virus effectively. Based on the testimony of patients like Jason, our efforts are a smashing success.

Mount St. Dominic Academy Starts the School Year Off with Book Club Discussions

Mount St. Dominic Academy, a four-year private Catholic college preparatory school for girls in grades 9-12, located in Caldwell, ended the first day of school on a high note with Book Club discussions about the books chosen for summer reading. The groups comprised faculty and students in all grades. There were 14 fiction and non-fiction books to choose from, with the goals of discovering new ideas, developing perspectives, expanding empathy, and of course – having fun!

The Book Club was the brainchild of Principal Laura Hollenbaugh who planned to use the time as a community building and ice-breaking exercise. It was also an opportunity for students across grade levels and faculty who might not regularly interact with one another to get to know each other.

“This was an opportunity for us to build community through conversation, meeting in small groups to explore the experiences and identities presented in the books we’d selected. These discussions gave students and adults alike the opportunity to contribute their unique perspectives and interpretations of texts, and to further develop our appreciation of and commitment to diversity and inclusion. Allowing for choice in the process resulted in meaningful participation and lively discussion!” said Principal Hollenbaugh.

The conversations were lively and at times serious. However, one thing was for sure— everyone needed more than an hour to unpack their thoughts. Luckily, all students will get the chance to do so in the coming weeks as they perform critical thinking exercises and analysis on their books of choice during upcoming classes.

Scarecrows will grace the beautiful grounds and winding pathways of Van Vleck House & Gardens from October 16-31. From traditional scarecrows to dark-and-scary tributes to Halloween, from repurposed and upcycled creatures to sewn-and-stuffed homages to characters inspired by history, mythology, film, or literature.

Scarecrows are silly and fun, but so are pumpkins! This year participants can choose to make wither a scarecrow or a ‘Pumpkin Friend.” The displays can range from takes on popular culture (a Barbie pumpkin display), animals, sports or Halloween-themed.

Update, Upgrade, and Uplift YOUR KITCHEN

The owners of Kitchen Tune-Up, Steven and Takia Livingston, and their team of experts promise to deliver not only a beautiful kitchen but an amazing experience. Takia and Steven Livingston first launched their local Kitchen Tune-Up franchise in 2019, choosing to settle down and build their business in Bloomfield because it’s “family-friendly and active.” Since then, the Kitchen Tune-Up team has expanded, delivering hundreds of kitchen remodels over the past few years.

They made the decision to bring a showroom to the neighborhood. Located on Broad Street in Bloomfield, the space was previously home to Tosone Electric. The building, which was originally constructed in 1970 and in need of a major revitalization. They saw the concept for the building and immediately knew it would be the perfect location. Takia partnered with the developer to design the space, which also serves as the company’s warehouse and receiving center.

Takia’s story is also unique. She made a switch from dentistry to pursuing her passion of kitchen remodeling. With this, she brings her expertise to each job, focusing on all the finer details. “I’ve always been in the business of smiles, now I get to do it with kitchens” says Takia.

With a business plan to redefine the expectations associated with kitchen remodels, the Livingstons prioritized having an in-house trained and dedicated team. Kitchen Tune-up specializes in custom cabinets, cabinet painting, cabinet refacing, countertops and flooring.

“If you like your existing layout, cabinet refacing is an awesome way to save time and money. Most refacing projects are completed in less than 5 days, provide full access to the kitchen during the remodel and can be a fraction of the cost of traditional gut remodels” says Steven. Kitchen Tune-up boasts a service that meets the needs of any discerning client seeking to update their kitchen.

“Our assessment focuses on your needs, and then selecting the right process to deliver it exceptionally. Our quotes are final, and we provide warranties on all our products. We commit to our clients, to create a beautiful space and worry-free experience. All you need to do is open the front door and let us in, we take care of it all” says Steven.

You Need a Home HVAC Maintenance Plan

Your heating and cooling system is one of the most critical investments in your home. It keeps you comfortable year-round. Yet, it can also be expensive to repair or replace if something goes wrong. That’s why it’s crucial to have an HVAC maintenance plan.

An HVAC maintenance plan is a contract with a qualified company, such as Air Group, that regularly inspects and cleans your system. Think of it as a yearly tuneup for your heating and cooling. They will check your system’s components, including the compressor, condenser, evaporator coil, and blower fan. They will also clean the air filter and coils and lubricate moving parts.

There are many benefits to having an HVAC maintenance plan. Here are a few:

PREVENT COSTLY BREAKDOWNS. Regular maintenance can identify and fix minor problems before they become major breakdowns. This can save you a lot of money in the long run.

EXTEND THE LIFE OF YOUR SYSTEM. Proper maintenance can help your HVAC system last longer. This means you will have to replace it less often, which can save you even more money.

IMPROVE ENERGY EFFICIENCY. A well-maintained HVAC system runs more efficiently, saving money on your energy bills.

TIPS FROM THE HOME PROS

Tips for BASEMENT REMODEL

When embarking on a basement remodel, there are several crucial factors to consider to ensure a successful transformation of this space. The overall goal is to create a functional and comfortable living area.

MOISTURE MITIGATION: Begin by assessing and addressing any moisture issues. Waterproofing and sealing the basement are essential steps to prevent water intrusion. Installing proper drainage and sump pumps can further safeguard against potential flooding.

LIGHTING: Adequate lighting is key to making the basement feel inviting and functional. Consider a combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting. Recessed LED lights, pendant fixtures, and wall sconces can be placed to achieve the desired illumination.

WINDOWS: Egress windows may be necessary for safety and compliance with building codes. Choose energy-efficient, double-pane windows to minimize heat loss.

USAGE PLANNING: Define how you intend to use the basement. It could be a home office, entertainment room, guest suite, or a combination of these.

HVAC AND INSULATION: Ensure proper insulation to maintain a comfortable temperature year-round. Evaluate your HVAC system’s capacity and make necessary upgrades to accommodate the additional space.

PERMITS AND CODES: Hire a reputable home remodeler familiar with local building codes and will obtain the required permits.

IMPROVE INDOOR AIR QUALITY. A clean HVAC system helps to filter the air in your home, removing dust, pollen, and other allergens. This can improve indoor air quality and make your home a healthier place to live.

If you don’t have an HVAC Maintenance plan, consider getting one with Air Group. It’s a small investment that can save you big money and headaches in the long run. It’s also a great way to protect your investment and keep your home comfortable year-round.

BUDGET AND TIMELINE: Establish a realistic budget and timeline for the project. Factor in unexpected costs and delays, and consider consulting with a professional contractor for accurate estimates.

By addressing these factors diligently, you can transform your basement into a valuable and enjoyable part of your home and a successful basement remodel.

FIVE Painting Myths Put to Rest

MYTH: Always a White Ceiling White reflects light so ceilings look higher. You can get the same result with any pale shade. Painting the ceiling a darker shade with a lighter color on the walls will also add height to a room.

MYTH: Trim Should Be White

White trim is timeless and goes well with any color. But contrasting trim is trending. Use a contrast color to highlight architectural features or add accent color to a room.

MYTH: Dark Colors Make a Room Look Smaller

Dark colors with a high gloss finish actually reflect light and make a room feel bigger. Dark accent walls can add depth and visually expand a space.

MYTH: Certain Colors Are Taboo Color stereotypes exist like red is overwhelming and white too sterile.

Increased Property Value

Beyond their immediate benefits, these shutters enhance your home’s resale value due to their universal appeal.

Window Works

www.windowworks-nj.com

But any color can be used if used correctly. Each room is different. Work with your painting professional to find the hue, paint finish, and ceiling and trim colors to complement the natural light, woodwork, and flooring in your room.

MYTH: Only Three Colors Per Room

This follows the classic design rule that 60% of a room should be the primary color, 30% a secondary color and 10% an accent color. But this is just an average. In a small room three colors may be too much. Different hues of the same color or neutrals, such as white, gray and black can be used balance the original three colors.

Designer Tips for TV Placement

Your television is most likely the main attraction in your living room. That makes it an important aspect of its overall design. Here are tips to finding the right place for it.

LOCATION: Place your TV away from high traffic areas, toward the center of a wall or above a fireplace to avoid interrupting your room’s flow.

GLARE: Avoid placing it across from windows to reduce glare.

SPACE: A wall should be big enough to host your TV. It’s best to find a wall that won’t seem crowded or too small to fit the screen.

ELECTRIC: Pick a wall that has ample power supply for your TV and extra systems.

HIDE WIRE MESS: Have a professional install your TV so all wires are hidden discreetly.

When decorating your TV wall, you have many design options. You can choose to have the television as main attraction or you can blend it into the room or minimize its presence. For more tips see their full Blog at www.valerieruddy.decoratingden.com/ when-the-tv-steals-the-show?

Fall maintenance of shrubs, hedges, and ornamental grasses is crucial to ensure they thrive in the following growing season. Here’s what you should consider doing for these plants in the fall.

SHRUBS: It’s best to wait until late winter or early spring for most shrubs, but some summer-blooming shrubs can be pruned in the fall after they’ve finished flowering. Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer to help them through the winter. Ensure they receive deep watering before the first frost, especially newly planted shrubs, to help them survive the winter. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. Ensure the mulch doesn’t touch the trunk to prevent rot.

HEDGES: Lightly shape hedges in early fall, but avoid heavy pruning which can encourage new growth that may not harden off before winter. Like shrubs, a balanced slowrelease fertilizer can benefit hedges in the fall. Deeply water hedges before the ground freezes to ensure they are wellhydrated throughout the winter. Add a fresh layer of mulch to help retain moisture and provide insulation against cold temperatures.

ORNAMENTAL GRASSES: Most ornamental grasses look beautiful in the fall and winter, providing texture and movement. Therefore, it’s often recommended to leave them unpruned until late winter or early spring. This protects the crowns from cold and provides winter interest. Fall is a good time to divide and transplant many ornamental grasses. This helps rejuvenate older clumps and gives you new plants to spread around or share. Like other plants, ensure ornamental grasses are well-watered before winter, especially if the fall has been dry.

For all these plants, always check for and remove any signs of disease or pest damage before winter. Damaged or diseased plant parts can harbor pests and diseases that might return in the spring. Remove the debris from the garden area and don’t compost infected materials. Some plants have particular needs or timings for care. When in doubt, consult with a local nursery or gardening expert for tailored advice.

EV Charger Installations Should Only Be Done By a Licenced Electrician

George Anderson, the owner of Anderson Electronic, says there has been an uptick in home EV charger installations over the past two years. Anderson Electric installs 2-3 a week at people’s homes.

“Homeowners should not try to install an EV charger themselves,” he says. “EV chargers draw a lot of power. Most homes must have their existing service upgraded to at least 200 amps in order to accommodate an EV charger, and this should always be done by a licensed electrician.”

Having a home EV charger that is 240 volts is beneficial because it is more powerful than the type that come with

electric vehicles and plug into existing 120 volt receptacles. They can take up to 16 hours to fully charge a vehicle, while a dedicated home EV charger only takes between 2-4 hours.

In addition, having an EV charger installed at home is more convenient than having to drive to a public location and wait for hours for the vehicle to charge. “The convenience of being able to park your car in your garage while it charges overnight justifies the cost of having one installed at home,” says George.

Right now is a great time to have an EV charger installed because utility companies like PSE&G are offering up to a $1,500 rebate to do so. George says

TIPS FROM THE HOME PROS

Why You May Need Flood Insurance Outside a Flood Zone

this is a great deal because an EV charger install can cost between $500 to $2500.00 depending on the degree of difficulty, with the average installbeing in the $500 to $1,500 range.

Anderson Electric 395 Little Falls Road, Cedar Grove 973-857-4333

www.andersonelectric.com

As climate patterns fluctuate due to global warming, areas previously thought safe may become susceptible to flooding. Over 20% of flood claims arise from properties outside highrisk zones, underscoring floods’ unpredictable nature. Regular homeowners’ insurance often excludes coverage for:

Storm Surge: Rising seawater levels caused by storms can impact homes miles inland.

Overflow of Inland or Tidal Waters: Overflow from rivers, lakes, or other water bodies won’t be covered.

Runoff and Mudflow: Heavy rains causing runoff or mudflows necessitate flood insurance, though mudslides aren’t covered.

Melting Snow: Rapid snowmelt can unexpectedly flood certain areas.

Blocked Storm Drainage Systems: Local flooding due to clogged drainage systems is another often-overlooked risk.

Flood insurance is commonly associated with properties situated in designated flood zones. However, considering it is vital even if you’re outside such an area, primarily because many water-related events that could damage your home may not be covered by your standard homeowner’s policy.

Residing outside a flood zone might seem like an invitation to skip flood insurance, but this could be a costly oversight. To safeguard your assets and enjoy peace of mind, consider integrating flood insurance into your protective measures. It’s a prudent investment in an ever-changing world.

Improving Drainage Around Your Home

In recent years, our climate has seen more robust and recurrent storms. For homeowners, ignoring drainage can pave the way for severe problems. Poor drainage leads to water accumulation around the house, which can jeopardize the foundation, stimulate mold growth, and harm the landscape. As storms intensify, so does the risk of flooding. This can inflict costly damages, including ruined appliances and structural impairments.

However, the situation isn’t without remedy. First, French drains are invaluable. These trenches, filled with gravel, carry a perforated pipe that efficiently diverts water away from your residence.

River rock can also be strategically placed around the home’s perimeter. Its smooth, rounded stones allow water to flow over them easily, acting as a barrier and directing water away from your home.

Rain gardens serve a dual purpose, providing an aesthetic appeal while allowing rainwater absorption through plants. Native vegetation can further aid in soaking up surplus water. Ensuring the land around your home is graded correctly can also facilitate appropriate water flow.

Considering Adding Millwork Before Painting Rooms in Your House

The transformative power of millwork cannot be understated when refreshing the aesthetic of a home. Wilber’s Home Improvement, a leader in both millwork and painting, offers insights into why homeowners should consider integrating millwork prior to painting.

Precision Edges

Adding millwork first means subsequent paint jobs will showcase clean, crisp edges. It negates the inconvenience of painting a room only to retouch or redo sections post millwork installations.

Damage Prevention

The installation process of millwork can sometimes lead to minor wall damages. Addressing these imperfections prior to painting guarantees a seamless finish.

Color Coordination

With millwork in its rightful place, selecting the ideal paint hue becomes more intuitive. Especially in spaces where the millwork serves as a key decorative element, it’s pivotal to establish a harmonious relationship between trim and wall colors.

Cost-Effective

Sidestepping the needless repetition of painted areas due to later millwork installations is both time and moneysaving.

Enhanced Aesthetics

Millwork adds a touch of elegance and sophistication. Be it crown molding, wainscoting, or custom cabinetry, these elements elevate the room’s ambience instantly.

Increased Home Value

High-quality millwork can boost a property’s market value. It provides both functional and decorative benefits that prospective buyers find appealing.

Personalization

Millwork offers homeowners the chance to customize their spaces. From modern to traditional designs, there’s a style to reflect every individual’s taste.

BRINGING YOUR VISION TO LIFE

Dorothy Goldberg wanted to bring clients’ visions to life more than 50 years ago when she established Creative Wallcoverings and Interiors. Her daughter, Rachel Kapner, joined the company when she was in her early twenties, eager to learn the ropes and continue the company’s mission. Today, Rachel is President of CWI Design, and the company has ten employees, wellversed in every aspect of interior design.

says. Relationships with clients and their families are paramount. Three generations of families have enjoyed the artistic endeavors of CWI Design.

Rachel is well-known for her ceiling designs. In many homes, she explains, “The ceiling is often the forgotten wall.” Most people typically leave the wall white or plain. However, a beautiful and unique ceiling can add depth and dimension to the room. “Adding a pattern or texture wallcovering, painting the ceiling in a contrast color, or even adding wood trim design can transform the room and add the feeling of additional height,” she says.

CWI Design supports several community events. One event is Mansion in May, which highlights their design work in a specific mansion. Also, CWI Design will sponsor the Embrace Hope Gala on Friday, October 20, at 7pm. All proceeds will benefit the Connie Dwyer Breast Cancer Foundation.

When It’s Time to Clean Out, Get Organized

CWI Design is a full-service home design company that creates inspiring and inviting spaces. With a vast array of products and services, from custommade drapes to artwork to wallpapering and furniture accents, CWI Design is with the project from inception to finish. Rachel and her design team complete each project with love. “I often live vicariously through my clients. If my clients love the colors or designs, I love it too,” she 1/2

When it’s time to clean out unwanted items and debris from your garage, attic, basement or any room in your home, don’t get overwhelmed—get organized.

First decide what you need to get rid of and what you want to do with your items–donate, discard or recycle. Purchase a package of colored dot stickers at an office supply store, and use them to color-code the items by category. This simple procedure will help get you started.

Research your donations to see if local charities accept your items. Also, find out if they pick up or you have to transport them.

Recycle what you can. Champion Waste recycles cardboard, paper, magazines, copper, brass, aluminum, stainless steel, cast-iron and car and truck batteries. Champion Waste generally discounts removing recyclables, especially appliances, since there is no dumping charge for them. In May and September/October, Essex County runs an electronics drop off day if you want to purge outdated home electronics.

Finally, determine if you can put your discards out for curb collection, if you want to rent a dumpster or you need to hire a clean-out service to take full control of your project.

Champion Waste can access your needs, give you advice and an estimate for your clean-out project. They offer container services with smaller trucks so they can fit dumpsters in places where the bigger trucks can’t. They also do live loads with a truck and crew to remove everything on the spot. They service clients that are just purging during the spring and fall, and those that are putting their house on the market.

When and Why to Change Your Smoke Detectors

Smoke detectors are vital tools designed to alert homeowners of potential fire hazards, giving invaluable time to escape. Ensuring they function correctly is of utmost importance for the safety of every home.

Most smoke detectors have a lifespan of 8 to 10 years. After this time, even if they appear operational, their internal sensors might have degraded, causing reduced sensitivity. Therefore, it’s recommended to replace them every decade.

In addition to the age, consider the technical advancements in today’s detectors. Modern smoke alarms boast features like interconnected systems, where if one alarm sounds, all alarms in the house will alert. Some also come equipped with carbon monoxide detection, voice alerts, and smart technology integrations allowing you to monitor and control them via smartphones.

Frequent false alarms or chirps even after battery replacements are signs that it’s time for a new detector.

Advances in Garage Doors and Openers: A MODERN TRANSFORMATION

In recent years, garage doors and their openers have undergone significant technological advancements, ensuring increased safety, efficiency, and convenience for homeowners. Traditional heavy, manual doors have evolved into automated, insulated designs that enhance energy efficiency, while also complementing a home’s aesthetics.

Modern garage door openers now integrate seamlessly with smart home systems, allowing users to operate and monitor them remotely via smartphone apps. These systems provide real-time notifications on access and even the ability to share temporary access codes with guests.

Furthermore, innovations in sensors have greatly improved safety by ensuring doors automatically reverse if an obstruction is detected. Battery backup systems have also become standard, ensuring that doors remain operational during power outages. These developments not only elevate the functionality of garages but also contribute to a home’s security and energy management.

Kitchen Sink & Faucet Trends

When planning a kitchen renovation most homeowners understandably focus on the large items, cabinets and countertops, since those are the big impact and big ticket items. However, the kitchen sink and faucet are one of the most important workspaces in the kitchen since people spend more than 60% of their time in the kitchen at this area. The sink and faucet will have a significant impact on your daily routine, so it is an important decision to make as part of your kitchen renovation.

The current trend in kitchen sinks is a large single bowl being most popular, with even larger workstation sinks with various accessories like cutting boards, racks and baskets gaining momentum. Stainless steel remains the most popular sink material but there are many other material and color options to choose from as well, such as granite composite, fireclay, and enameled cast iron.

With technology becoming an integral part of our lives, smart faucets have surfaced as the predominant trend in 2023. Faucets that respond to motion sensors or voice commands make for a hygienic kitchen, minimizing the spread of germs and creating ease of use. Touch faucets have been around for many years but now more companies are introducing voice activated faucets. These faucets pair with your connected home device and can turn the water on and off, pour specific amounts, and even warm up the water using your voice-enabled device.

The kitchen sink and faucet should not be an afterthought in your kitchen renovation. Showcase Kitchen & Bath will help with every aspect of your kitchen and bathroom renovation to make sure your renovation dreams become a reality.

What Type of Stone is Best for a Fireplace Surround?

Stone fireplace surrounds are available in a wide range of colors, patterns and textures that can match any design style. From its heat tolerance, to it’s hard, scratch resistant surface, natural stone can handle the rigors of day-to-day use.

• Slate is resistant to heat, but only appropriate for gas and electric fireplaces—the heat from wood fires can be too intense.

• Marble is chosen by many for its timeless beauty, and it is heat tolerance and can be used with wood burning, gas or electric fireplaces.

• Granite is suitable for gas or wood burning fireplaces. The stone does require regular sealing, but it is relatively low maintenance and easy to care for.

• Limestone is very durable and has good heat tolerance. However, this stone should only be used with electric or gas fireplaces.

Fall is the Perfect Time for Landscape & Hardscape Planning

Fall is a prime season to start your landscape and hardscape design journey. As nature prepares for winter, landscapers find this time ideal to plan for next spring’s blooms. Cooler temperatures make soil workable and offer reduced transplant shock for new plants. Additionally, nurseries often run end-of-season sales, presenting costsaving opportunities on both plants and hardscape materials.

Landscape designers, less occupied in autumn, can give personalized attention to creating a harmonious blend of living and non-living elements in your garden. Fall provides the perfect backdrop to visualize hardscape integrations, from patios to pathways, ensuring they complement the natural environment. Plus, installations settle well during the colder months, priming your garden for spring’s arrival. Embrace the season and let the autumnal inspiration guide your garden’s transformation. Here are the top 5 things to consider.

Ideal Working Conditions: Cooler temperatures in the fall can be more favorable for labor-intensive hardscape installations. There’s less risk of the ground being too frozen (as in winter) or too wet (as in spring), making it easier to work with.

Settling Time: If you’re installing elements like patios or pathways, the fall and winter months can provide ample time for these structures to settle properly before heavy use in the spring and summer.

Winter Usage: Hardscaping elements, like fire pits or outdoor heaters on a patio, can make outdoor spaces usable even in cooler months. Planning and implementing these in the fall can extend the use of your outdoor space into the winter.

Preparation for Spring Planting: With hardscaping completed in the fall, you can easily plan your spring planting around

these structures. This ensures a cohesive design where plants and hardscape elements complement each other.

Time for Add-Ons and Adjustments: Starting hardscape planning in the fall gives you the winter months to think about additional features or adjustments. Maybe you decide to add lighting to your pathways or upgrade materials on your patio.

Key Considerations When Upgrading Your KITCHEN APPLIANCES

The holidays are synonymous with feasts, family gatherings, and fond memories in the kitchen. If you’re contemplating a kitchen appliance upgrade before the festivities begin, here are some vital points to contemplate.

FUNCTIONALITY & SIZE: Before you splurge, evaluate what appliances you frequently use and the size suitable for your family. A larger oven might be ideal for holiday turkeys, but ensure it fits seamlessly in your kitchen space.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY: Modern appliances often come with better energy ratings. Upgrading might mean a higher upfront cost but can result in significant savings on your energy bills in the long run.

ADVANCED FEATURES:

Today’s appliances offer smart features like programmable settings, touch interfaces, and connectivity to mobile devices. Think about which features would genuinely enhance your cooking experience.

AESTHETIC & DESIGN: Ensure your new appliances match your kitchen’s overall design and color scheme. Cohesive aesthetics can elevate the entire look and feel of the space.

INSTALLATION & WARRANTY:

Opt for brands and stores, like Reno’s Appliance, that provide reliable installation services. A proper installation ensures

DUCTLESS MINI SPLIT HEATING & COOLING

longevity, and a solid warranty offers peace of mind.

BUDGET: Set a realistic budget. Remember, the most expensive is only sometimes the best. Prioritize what you need most and find a balance between quality and cost.

For older homes or for spaces that make it hard to run HVAC ductwork, Carrier® mini split heating and cooling systems are a great solution. They don’t require the ductwork that is difficult to install in older construction, or in homes without attics or adequate closet space to do so.

• The units can be mounted high or low on any wall, or on the floor.

• Energy bills are lower because the units, hyper-zoned to a specific space, deliver better heating/cooling balance between rooms.

• Greater comfort from room to room, whether heating or cooling.

• Their inverter technology hardly draws any electrical current.

• Up to five units can run off one compressor and the compressor is very quiet.

These compact systems focus on individual living spaces, making them more flexible, energy efficient, and easier to install. Give us a call for more details or for a free in-home survey.

Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center Places Final Steel Beam for New Cancer Center Building

CCooperman Barnabas Medical Center (CBMC), an RWJBarnabas Health facility, raised the final steel beam on its freestanding Cancer Center, now under construction. Cancer survivors, oncology department staff, board members, and donors added their signatures to the steel beam during morning and evening ceremonies — leaving their permanent mark on the five-story, 137,000-squarefoot facility.

Scheduled for 2025 completion, the $225-million outpatient facility on CBMC’s Livingston campus will serve as the northern hub for the integrated oncology services offered by RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the state’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.

“Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center is a regional leader in cancer care, and with the construction of this state-of-the-art facility, we are setting a new standard for top-quality care,” said Richard L. Davis, the hospital’s President and CEO. “With world-class amenities and a team that includes some of the top cancer specialists in the nation, the new Cancer Center will be a premier destination for patient-centered and research-driven cancer care in this region and beyond.”

“There is absolutely nothing more important to our community than having

best-in-class health care. The creation of a state-of-the-art cancer center here at CBMC represents one of the most significant events in this community and continues the ongoing growth and transformation of the Medical Center. Our vision of reimagining cancer care could not have occurred without the generosity and support of our many donors. We are grateful for their support and to everyone who has played a role in bringing this project to life,” said Bruce Schonbraun, Chair of the Board of Trustees at CBMC.

At the new Cancer Center, patients will have access to medical, surgical, and radiation oncology services under one roof, with amenities that include a wig and prosthetic studio, yoga classes, music therapy, and psychosocial support services. Private infusion rooms and short-term and extended-stay facilities will also be available.

“The Cancer Center at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center is part of an overall major investment by RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute to transform oncology services across the state including the construction of the Jack and Sheryl Morris Cancer Center, the state’s first freestanding cancer hospital,” said Steven K. Libutti, M.D., Director of Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and Senior Vice President, Oncology Services at RWJBarnabas Health.

The medical center’s partnership with Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey provides patients access to the most advanced treatment options, including clinical trials, CAR T-cell therapy, immunotherapy, and precision medicine. “This new Cancer Center will be synonymous with clinical excellence, collaboration, and a commitment to integrated care, delivered by world-class physicians and specialists,” said Michael Scoppetuolo, M.D., Medical Director of the Cancer Center at CBMC. “This is what the future of cancer care looks like in the Garden State and beyond. I’m honored to be a part of it.”

“Cancer treatment is getting more targeted and precise every year,” added Alison Grann, M.D., Chair of the hospital’s Department of Radiation Oncology and the Northern Region Director of Radiation Oncology, RWJBarnabas Health. “The Cancer Center will provide patients with the most advanced multidisciplinary, patient-centric cancer care available in one central location.”

More information about the new center is available online, at rwjbh.org/cbmccancercenter

WINGS Cancer Support for Women

WINGS is a cancer support group is for women (from any town) who have or have had cancer. WINGS stands for: Women Inspiring Nurturing Giving Strength and Support. It was started by a group of women in 2010, who met each other through the holistic nurse at RWJ Barnabas Health/Cooperman Barnabas Medical Canter, while they were undergoing Cancer treatment.

WINGS offers educational programs in the healing arts and group support to help regain emotional, physical and spiritual health. The programs include educational and holistic topics, focusing on mind, body, and spirit. All monthly programs are free of charge.

They offer unique programs like writing to heal, reiki, tai chi, yoga, drumming, music and meditation. Their mission is: To provide a positive environment for women with any kind of cancer-before, during or after treatment- to alleviate stress and anxiety, through the healing arts.

Women diagnosed with cancer are under a great deal of stress and anxiety. Experiencing and learning some new tools to use, as simple as a breathing meditation, guided imagery, and a gratitude list, or more advanced skills such as reiki, journaling or body movements, can help restore balance and harmony back into their lives.

The meetings are filled with sharing, laughter, love and sometimes tears, which are, of course, healing. WINGS is a 501(c) 3 non-for profit organization. The board members have also written a book, called, “Let Me Walk the Journey with You.” which they offer for free to any woman who comes to the group.

WINGS meet once a month at the Verona Community Center, 880 Bloomfield Avenue, Verona. All programs are free of charge.

THE SCIENCE OF MEDITATION: Exploring Its Benefits and Different Techniques

Meditation, deeply rooted in ancient traditions, has evolved with modern times. Today, digital aids like phone apps and videos make the practice more accessible than ever. These tools guide beginners, track progress, and offer diverse techniques to suit varied needs.

Scientific studies reveal meditation’s myriad benefits. It not only reduces stress and enhances concentration but also bolsters emotional well-being. From a neurological perspective, consistent meditators display increased thickness in brain regions linked to attention and sensory processing. Furthermore, there is diminished activity in the amygdala, a region of the brain primarily associated with emotional processes—the hub for stress and fear.

Meditation techniques vary widely. Mindfulness meditation teaches presence and observation of thoughts without judgment. Transcendental meditation involves mantra repetition to dive deep within. Guided visualization prompts a mental journey, while progressive relaxation focuses on physical awareness through muscle tension and relaxation.

Whether you’re using age-old methods or digital aids, the essence remains. The transformative potential of meditation is vast, impacting both the mind and body. As science delves deeper, it echoes ancient wisdom: in stillness, we find profound insight.

BOOSTING MENTAL AGILITY: The New Workout for Your Mind

In today’s fast-paced world, mental agility—the ability to think quickly, adapt, and respond to various situations— has become just as important as physical strength. Like muscles, our cognitive faculties require regular exercise to stay sharp and agile. Fortunately, boosting mental agility isn’t limited to intellectual elites; with simple practices, anyone can enhance their cognitive prowess.

One proven method is engaging in regular brain exercises. Activities like puzzles, crosswords, and strategy games can stretch our cognitive boundaries, encouraging the brain to forge new connections. Continuous learning, whether picking up a new

language or mastering a musical instrument, also enriches neural networks and promotes adaptability.

Physical exercise, surprisingly, also enhances mental flexibility. Cardiovascular workouts, in particular, boost blood flow to the brain, nourishing it with oxygen and essential nutrients. This not only supports brain health but also enhances cognitive functions.

In an age where change is the only constant, mental agility offers a competitive edge, enabling us to navigate life’s unpredictabilities with grace and resilience. Now is the time to prioritize cognitive fitness in our daily routines.

TO THE RESCUE

LLast Sunday my family and I drove up to the Tamerlaine Sanctuary and Preserve (141 Clove Road, Montague NJ). The sanctuary is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and care of abused, neglected, and otherwise discarded farmed animals. I was so impressed with the tour and impact it had on my family I decided to sit down and speak to Peter Nussbaum who is the co-founder of the sanctuary to let people know about this amazing place and also get a glimpse of the magic that he’s brought to so many lives.

Barry Farber: How did all this get started?

Peter Nussbaum: My wife and I had a tremendous interest in animal rights and caring for animals but our caring for animals consisted of cats and dogs. Then one day my wife convinced me that it would be a good idea to adopt two roosters, and we quickly realized that they were no different than our dogs and cats. They became part of our family, So, two roosters became five roosters, 15 chickens became 100 chickens, and before you know it, we became a rescue farm, taking in not only chickens but all sorts of farmed animals from abuse, abandonment, and neglect. That was back in 2013 when we started.

BF: What inspired me as I took the tour of your sanctuary is that it wasn’t just the amazing interactions between the people and the animals but the stories you told that connected the whole sanctuary to me. Could you please tell me a story our readers would appreciate?

PN: One of our 250 animals is a large breed industrial size pig who weighs 800 pounds. His name is Pecan. He came to

us from Rutgers University back in 2016. He was part of an agricultural school program where they teach students how to raise livestock. An agricultural student thought of pigs as bacon, pork chops and ham. She was assigned to care for pecan, to raise him, and feed him. Then she was horrified when she found out that the pigs from the program eventually get shipped off and become bacon, pork chops and ham. She reached out to us and asked us if we could take Pecan and we said yes. She was relieved but the school was unwilling to let Pecan come to us. So, what she and her friends and family did is they went to the livestock auction. They found out when Pecan was being shipped off. They went and made sure they were the highest bidder. When she saw Pecan in the middle of all the other pigs, she yelled his name and he came pushing through the crowd and came right up to her and she said, don’t worry you’re coming home with these people and she pointed to my wife. Then they brought

Follow him @barryfarberofficial.

Pecan back to us in 2016. We have tons of stories like that. Pecan is our largest pig. Spends his days foraging, sunbathing and getting belly rubs.

BF: Tell me about the intelligence of pigs.

PN: Pigs are known for decorating their houses. If there are flowers on a pigs pasture the pigs will very often pick the flowers and bring them into their house. They’re immaculate animals. The one farm animal that would never in a million years go to the bathroom where they sleep.

BF: Your profession is an attorney specializing in trademarks and intellectual property and now you have this amazing accomplishment giving back to the animals and also the people who visit the sanctuary. What is your definition of success today?

PN: I often tell people that the Tamerlaine Sanctuary and Preserve is the stupidest thing I’ve ever done financially but by far the best thing I have ever done. I’ve never been happier or more resolved to the fact that I’m doing something that matters and giving people an opportunity to connect with the animals. Thousands of these people come through and some of them are meeting these animals for the first time.

Our collection days provide our residents a place to properly and safely dispose of contaminants, protecting our precious environment for future generations. I encourage residents of all our communities to come out and participate.”

Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr., Essex County Executive, the Board of County Commissioners and the Essex County Utilities Authority
