Os tempos difíceis que atravessamos têmnos pregado algumas partidas. Uma delas é precisamente o facto de não termos conseguido reunir as condições necessárias para o lançamento de mais edições em 2012 (em papel, entenda-se). Podíamos ter baixado simplesmente os braços e ter aguardado a chegada de ventos mais favoráveis ao mercado. Contudo, penso que isso não espelha bem a nossa forma de estar. Por esse motivo metemos mãos ao trabalho e, logo após o lançamento do primeiro Flipbook, decidimos que em dezembro lançaríamos uma nova edição neste formato tão desgarrado e original. Queríamos que fosse algo visualmente marcante, com textos curtos e objetivos cuja função fosse acima de tudo a de não saturar o leitor. Queríamos que fosse uma edição inteiramente “tcham”! Ou seja, de muito impacto gráfico, que deixasse o leitor extasiado a cada página virada (ainda mais que na edição passada). No fundo, parece-me que procurámos apenas “assassinar” as retinas de todos vós. Nasceu então o The Killer Issue com ação de fazer cair qualquer um. No fundo, esta é uma prenda de todos nós (a equipa da Vert) para todos vós que tanto nos têm apoiado e seguido atentamente ao longo dos anos. Obrigado e tenham um Feliz Natal! Mas atenção! No final façam-nos o favor de não morrer! ;)
The difficult times we´re living left us somehow handicapped and created some unexpected situations. One of them is precisely the fact of not gathering the necessary conditions to release more print editions in 2012. We could have simply cross our arms and awaited the arrival of favourable winds to the market. However, we don´t like to act that way. So, right after the launching of the first Flipbook, we decide to throw a new edition in December, again in this format so strayed and original. We want it something visually outstanding, with objective and short articles so the reader could have a cool experience. We wanted a very appealing and with great graphic impact edition, that left the reader completely ecstatic on every page turn. I guess in the end all we wanted was to “murder” the retinas out there. The Killer Issue had just born with crazy action. This is a special gift from all of us (the team behind Vert) to all of you, loyal and supportive readers that have been around for so many years. Thank you & Merry Christmas! But please… do not die in the end! ;)

Seeing Skeleton Bay from the air is the only way to truly appreciate how long and perfect it really is. During the best swell of 2012 a core group of South African bodyboarders drove 24 hours through the night from Cape Town to arrive just before sunrise and to tackle the famous Skeleton Bay. Sacha Specker in one of the best waves of the day, having already ridden the wave for a kilometre.

Nonetheless, these faces show us two almost paradoxical evidences. For starters, they are two showmen of the bodyboarding world. In fact, they are the entertainers of our sport, period. Whether in competition or free surfing, they amuse the masses, through videos or at the beach. They are the guarantee that bodyboarding is all but not drab and automatic. Quite the contrary: it is amazing, it breeds human beings capable of defying the humours of nature and to configure themselves as individuals that rise to the extreme of their abilities. They are an inspiration for thousands, which, on the sands and reefs of this planet, engage in innovation, in the search for new manoeuvres. They thrust and represent bodyboarding at the highest level.

On the other hand, the opening image lets us guess that these two don’t fool around. They take the maximum pleasure out of the foam, they put on a show, but they never step away from the real objective they pursue: to be the best competitors ever. Jeff is a 2x World Champion and is running for a third one this year, against the Aussie Dave Winchester in Frontón; throughout the second half of the decade, he was always a contender for the top spot in the world ranking; and he sums prestigious titles in venues like Pipeline or on Wild Wild Wave in Fronton. As to Dave Hubbard, he was the Dropknee World Tour champion in 2009 and is the favourite to repeat the title every year.

The 'F' The spot of the F word enjoys an excessive world reputation and doesn´t need a presentation. The Canary Islands are, actually, one of the big international poles of Bodyboarding. El Frontón, definitely the heaviest wave of the archipelago, has provided crazy and entirely amazing sessions. The action has been stupidly deafening! But there´s the word on the streets saying limits are something from the past... Well, truth is there´s still plenty to explore! Namely concerning to the size of the waves surfed.

Coincidently or not the Spanish torpedo have been in top form in the last years, registering the most incredible sessions of the European continent (in waves of this category, of course) and an amazing worldwide media coverage. A thing is certain: every day, every sessionâ&#x20AC;Ś the local tradition of breaking the limits still the number one rule in the islands.

O spot goza de uma desmedida reputação mundial e dispensa apresentações. As Ilhas Canárias são, efetivamente, um dos grandes polos internacionais do Bodyboard. El Frontón, decididamente a onda mais pesada do arquipélago, tem proporcionado sessões totalmente radicais e alucinantes. A ação tem sido estupidamente bombástica! Corre até a palavra que por aqui os limites já eram coisa do passado... mas a verdade é que ainda há muito por explorar!

Nomeadamente no que toca ao tamanho das ondas surfadas. Coincidência ou não, o torpedo canário tem-se mostrado no topo da forma registando, inclusivamente, as sessões mais incríveis do continente europeu (em ondas deste calibre e caraterísticas, entenda-se) nos últimos anos. Uma coisa é certa, digam o que disserem a tradição vai-se mantendo pelas ilhas, pois a cada onda, a cada sessão, a cada dia que passa, mais e mais barreiras vão sendo quebradas.

As opposed to last year, where I had to join around 4 thousand euros, the waiting period for this year was minor. So I tried to do the same with half of the resources. It was two months living from the rain, with only a change of clothes and camping equipment lent by a friend. The purpose was to grow as human being and at the same time venture myself on a new challenge. I found that living isolated and on a simpler form became a unique experience... and if there´s a place in the blue planet by which I nourish a special affection is in fact the South of Australia. I believe all the mystical around this region exist because it fits my standards, ideal and image aesthetics of my dreams. The only difference is that, thanks to the waves surfed, to the countless number of stars, the friendships made and all the euphoria of sensations lived, this time the dream was real!
Ao contrário do ano passado, em que tive de juntar cerca de 4 mil euros, este ano o período de espera foi menor e tentei fazer o mesmo com metade dos recursos. Foram dois meses a viver de água da chuva, com apenas uma muda de roupa e equipamento de campismo emprestado. O propósito foi o de crescer como ser humano e ao mesmo tempo aventurar-me por areias nunca antes pisadas. Viver de uma forma mais simples e isolada tornou-se uma experiência única e enriquecedora... e se há local neste planeta azul pelo qual nutro um carinho especial é o Sul da Austrália. Creio que a mística em torno desta região deve-se por esta ser a mais próxima daquilo que se enquadra nos padrões, ideais e estéticas de imagem que encontro nos meus sonhos. A única diferença é que, graças às diferentes ondas que surfei, ao número de estrelas cadentes que contei, às amizades que criei e à euforia de sensações que vivi, desta vez o sonho foi real!
Four flights, a train and thousand kilometres later, I woke up facing Monuments for the second time in my life! It looked a "déjà vu"! Some friends from Adelaide and I just looked like kids celebrating in the first day. But we decide to wait for the sun uncovered the cliff, just to check there wasn´t big fellows ready to surprise you in the water...
Onze meses depois, ao fim de quatro voos, um comboio e mil quilómetros de estrada, voltei a acordar frente a Monuments! Parecia um “déjà vu”! Nesta primeira manhã, eu e uns amigos de Adelaide, que tinham chegado ao acampamento durante a noite, parecíamos uns miúdos a vibrar. Esperámos que o sol destapasse a falésia, só naquela de confirmar que não havia peixinhos prateados na água que nos fossem atormentar...
The surf was epic; the sea was smooth and perfect. The journey was memorable! The barrels were an authentic aquarium and the ramps looked like cannons. I reviewed family faces and meet new people. In the end of the day the typical bonfire where we sot down talking and drinking beers...
O surf foi épico; o mar esteve liso e perfeito. Aliás, a viagem foi memorável! Os tubos pareciam autênticos oceanários e as rampas puros canhões de lançamento. Revi caras familiares e fiz novos amigos. Ao final do dia a típica fogueira onde nos sentávamos a conversar e a beber uma cerveja...
What fascinates in the desert is the pure essence that goes from the vast ecosystem biodiversity to the speed provided from the waves. In the end everything is a question of share. The peak is a perfect harmony between living beings, cartographies, winds, swell, lights, colours, etc. An authentic fever of emotions.
O que fascina nas ondas do deserto é toda a sua essência que vai desde a biodiversidade dum ecossistema puro à velocidade que as suas paredes proporcionam. No final é tudo uma questão de partilha. O pico é uma harmonia perfeita entre seres vivos, cartografias, ventos, ondulações, luzes, cores, etc. Uma autêntica febre de emoções.
