think the front cover photo of this issue is one of the best we’ve done in our seven years as a magazine! The models were all found in the Scene model search we conducted last year, and a new one will be announced soon. All of them were lovely and did a terrific job of showcasing the spring collection from Belk. And of course, photographer Brandon Powers did an outstanding job with the lighting while stylist Brittany McClure did beautifully selecting spring fashions that would showcase well at the Crescent, evoking another era. The TV show Mad Men has certainly brought retro styles, colors and fabrics back into fashion! Brittany also wrote the restaurant feature on Bubba Jax which will have your mouth watering just looking at the photos! They’ve been a great edition to the local foodie scene. And I can’t believe that the Turner Center for the Arts is already 10 years old. It’s amazing sometimes how fast the years are flying by, and wonderful to see how well the Turner Center is doing. They are an entrenched part of our community now, and it’s such a delightful place to visit, view art, and hold events. You will find many delightful stories, photos and features inside, so please take the time to read and enjoy!

Spring is in full bloom! by BRITTANY McCLURE photos by BRANDON POWERS

SPRING IS IN THE AIR WHICH MEANS IT’S TIME FOR YOU SPRUCE UP YOUR WARDROBE. Toss out those heavy coats, tuck away the nudes and neutrals and stack up on some of this season’s most essential fashions. Lucky for you, all the spring essentials you need can be found at Belk. This year on the runway, peekaboo pieces were all the rage. Darling cutouts of the back, side and midriff can be done tastefully and the best thing about this trend is that there is an option for every body shape. If you feel like your tummy isn’t quite ready to debut, go for a cutout across the collar bone or even your upper ribcage. If you do bare a little midriff, make sure you are wearing a high cut pant, short or skirt that covers your belly button.

5-year-old Erin Howard plays among the flowers at the Crescent. Dress by Rare Editions and bow by Riviera, all from Belk.

However, my most favorite and forever classy cutout can be seen on Scene model Chelsea Williams on the cover who is sporting a back peekaboo in a peachy, tropical dress by Love Fire. In the front, the dress is classically “Doris Day”, cinched at the waist and flared to just about the knee. It’s just enough skin to keep her trendy and just enough dress to make her timeless. Another big trend this year is sister to the peekaboo, it’s sheer. Sheer blouses, skirts and full dresses rocked just about every spring runway and can be seen on Scene model Nikki Weldon on the cover. Weldon wears a turquoise and floral scattered print by Pinky. Delicate blues, greens, pinks and purples pair perfectly with this trend. If you need a more casual outfit, than look no further than the floral print shorts by Celebrity Pink Jeans

also modeled by Weldon. They’re so vibrant, so stylish and the only thing that would make them even more perfect is a high waist. Weldon creates that illusion by tucking in a beautifully vibrant pink blouse. While “hoochie” shorts may still be popular on Instagram, fashion’s most elite will tell you that Bermuda and tailored cuts are the way to go. So cover your bums girls! For ladies and gents, a reinstated trend this year is bold stripes. Last year was all about polka dots and digital prints but now the runways have uncomplicated their designs with a classic, Coco-esque stripe that you will be able to wear for seasons — even years — to come. A subtle vertical stripe is worn by Scene model Casey Weldon on the cover. Weldon’s stripes are paired with

a light blue, tailored sailor-short, all by Ralph Lauren. Casey also rocks some neon, horizontal stripes with bright yellow pants by Ralph Lauren. Girls aren’t the only ones who can have fun because the pants are bold, easy to wear and though bright, can act as a neutral to almost any spring colored shirt. Another trend to watch out for is sporty, easy, breezy dresses like the baby pink one modeled by Williams. Spring’s sporty dresses with flirty A-line skirts and shoulder showcasing bodices will guarantee to keep you looking classy and sassy all in the same stroke. While Williams wears nude wedges, sporty dresses can also be worn with flats and low heels which are all the rage this season. When it comes to little girls, like 5year-old Scene model Erin Howard, it’s

almost business as usual when it comes to Spring. Cute sundresses never go out of style and this year, you will see a lot of bold, bright colors with floral patterns and textures like the dresses on Howard by Rare Editions. Thanks to Pinterest, bows are making a big comeback not just on tots, but on young adults as well. For the little one, pick up some already crafted bow, by Riviera and for you

older gals, grab some ribbon at your local craft store and cut a triangle into the ends for a tailored look. Spring isn’t just a time to renew your fashion, you can pep up your home and party decor as well. Nothing is more beautiful on a sunny day than a picnic themed lunch. So shop the Home Accents brand for baskets, plates, table decor and more (as seen on the cover). A popular spring item for the guy

or gal on the go is the textured, doublewalled, ice beverage cup with straw by DFL. It keeps your tea and your style hot as they are available in many vibrant colors. For a more sophisticated affair, book the Crescent. A sun-room, garden, porch and lawn to die for, it is the perfect location to host your spring party, baby shower, wedding and more.

The Six Stages of Marriage BY MA R K W E B B Mark Webb is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in private practice at South Georgia Psychiatric and Counseling Center in Valdosta. He is the author of “How To Be A Great Partner”. Read more of his articles at www.TheRelationshipSpecialist.com

“A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person.” ~ Mignon McLaughlin

Marriage is an evolving process of change with ups and downs, twists and turns. Most couples don’t realize that there are predictable stages occurring throughout the life of the marriage. Awareness of these stages can reduce stress and conflict during the tough times. When you understand there are often predictable stages that all couples typically go through, you can navigate safely through and sometimes past the tough times.

Here are the six stages of a marriage: 1) Fascination Stage –

2) Awakening Stage –

Everybody loves this stage because it is so full of vigor, passion and romance. You are in love and are clear that you want to spend the rest of your life with your partner. You love their quirks and appreciate their differences. You think about your spouse throughout the day and you feel like you are one!

The second stage involves day to day living together and how each partner shoulders their responsibilities when living together. In this stage, you are beginning to know your spouse much better but their quirks are starting to annoy you. You begin to realize that he or she is not perfect. Perhaps you try to change their behaviors so they can be perfect, like you. Eventually sadness can develop and permeate the relationship because your expectations of the perfect marriage have begun to fade. At this point, discouragement kicks in with a lowered frustration tolerance of each other’s differences. This is the stage when I notice young couples begin to seek help for their marriage. I am

“Don’t be a buzz kill. When your spouse shares something exciting, match their enthusiasm.” ~ Unknown

24

ValdostaScene | APRIL 2013

pleased to say that I’ve noticed a positive trend emerging in our society; public awareness has encouraged couples to seek help in therapy and begin to reap the benefits of marriage therapy for their relationship. Couples who do not have a strategy to keep themselves strong and intimate tend to drift apart.

“Don’t worry that children never listen to you; worry that they are always watching you.” ~ Robert Fulghum

3) Turbulence Stage – During this stage of marriage, the frustration level is off the chart. If you didn’t have the communication skills to help you in stage two then stage three will be awful. The couple tends to get stuck in a painful cycle of bickering. This is when couples will typically consider getting a separation or a divorce. It is common for one or both partners to engage in activities that are detrimental to the marriage such as abusing alcohol, having an affair or some other destructive activity. Rather than focusing on how to improve their relationship skills, the focus is on what is wrong with the marriage. Rather than trying to reconnect, the couple often seeks escape. Couples with children tend to work harder on resolving their problems. This stage can be avoided if the couple tends to be proactive and they educate themselves on how to be successful in marriage. Unfortunately, many couples get stuck in this stage for the duration of their marriage. If you are in this stage now, get the help you need. This frustrating stage can be stopped and your marriage can be fixed.

“My dad told me on the day of my wedding, ‘Never go in a place that you wouldn’t take your wife.’” ~ David Gibbs

4) Alliance Stage – This is where things start to make sense. The couple is more connected. They have learned the communication and problem solving skills that are needed to maintain intimacy and friendship. They have a respectful attitude toward each other. Their love has transcended from a tolerance of one another’s differences to an acceptance of each other as they are. They actually appreciate each other’s strengths and differences. Children tend to be the priority in most families but couples who reach this stage have made their marriage the priority.

“The most important marriage skill is listening to your partner in a way that they can’t possibly doubt that you love them.” ~ Diane Sollee

5) Harmony Stage – Renewed passion and playfulness appear in this stage that is commonly referred to as “the empty nest”. The couple has more time together as their children reach the later teenage years. The couple in this stage has a greater understanding of fulfilling each other’s needs and a stronger appreciation of each other. These couples have developed a stronger friendship and they enjoy their time together.

“One of the nicest things you can say to your partner is ‘If I had it to do over again, I’d choose you.’” ~ Unknown

6) Fulfillment Stage – The couple is stable and secure at this point. They enjoy each other’s company and the life they have built together. The marriage honors one another and the couple sets an example for others to aspire towards.

“The heart of marriage is memories.” ~ Bill Cosby

How to wake up

Beautiful

Rhonda Tomlinson Nationally Certified Medical Aesthetician of Dr. Shawn Vandemark Plastic Surgery

“Beauty sleep” is real. Your skin uses sleep hours to heal itself from the day’s damage. When you drift off, your skin gets the chance to improve. That’s why you may wake up looking fresh and rosy. If you are not a back sleeper then you need to be careful of creases. Use a sleep pillow so you won’t wake up with sleep lines. Also, did you know that if you sleep more you have less acne? Lack of sleep can lead to stress, which causes pimples and blackheads, even in adults. In one study, experts found that college students had more breakouts when they were stressed out, such as during exam time.

You want eyes that sparkle? Don’t let dark circles steal their spotlight. Dark circles often run in families, but they can look even darker if you aren’t getting enough shut-eye. To disguise them, apply a light layer of eye cream as a primer. Then dab on and blend in a dot of concealer one to two shades lighter than your skin tone.

When you wake up with puffy eyes it’s because fluid collects around them when your head lies flat on the bed. Solution: Prop your head above your heart at night with a couple of pillows. Still packing bags under your eyes? Apply a cold cloth to the area for a minute or two in the morning. Skip the salt.

Pulling an all-nighter can make your skin look more pale or blotchy. Sleep encourages healthy blood flow to your skin. If you wake up with uneven skin, apply foundation. Set it with translucent powder (or green-tinted powder to balance out redness).

If you’re a night owl looking for a snack, reach for a piece of fruit. Salty snacks can give you a swollen face in the morning. That’s because foods that are high in salt can cause you to retain fluid, resulting in puffiness.

26

ValdostaScene | APRIL 2013

A glass of wine might seem relaxing, but you’re more apt to see dried out skin and larger pores in the mirror the next day. Cut back on nightly drinking and have lots of water instead. In the morning, use a toner that contains zinc sulfate or alum, which make pores look smaller. One of the best ways to put yourself to sleep can improve your skin too. Take a warm bath with all the fixings like bubbles, oils, and body scrubs before bed to raise your body temperature a little. You tend to feel sleepy when your body temperature drops, like after a bath.

Nightly Skin Routine This is overall the most important. Did you know your aging also takes place during your sleep? To keep your face smooth and soft, start with a mild cleanser to remove grit, grime, and makeup. Next, apply a combination of vitamin C, retinol, glycolic acid and a moisturizer. The combination and strength of these depends on your age, genetics and do’s and don’ts of daily activities.

Odd Gardening Tips • Use Egg Shells As Fertilizer: Rich in calcium carbonate, dried egg shells work as a great natural fertilizer. Try crushing them up in a blender before throwing them in your garden to enrich the soil. • Cucumbers Are Sweeter When Planted Near Sunflowers: It may seem like an odd pairing, but sunflowers make great growing companions when it comes to planting sweeter cucumbers. Not only do both plants require similar soil conditions, the tall stalks of the sunflowers give cucumber plants something supportive to climb. • Water Plants With Chamomile Tea: Chamomile tea is great for keeping your plants healthy. Use it when watering to ward off bacterial and fungal infections and to prevent young seedlings from damping off. Just make sure the tea is completely cooled off first before you use it. • Plant In Odd Numbers: To make your garden look more balanced and pleasing to the eye, be sure to plant in odd numbers. This composition looks more natural than even numbered groupings and gives off the illusion that plants are bigger and healthier. • Garden By Moonlight: Night owls, rejoice! Experts say that planting by the light of the moon actually causes gardens to grow faster and stronger than they do if you plant by day. An added bonus? Moonlight gardening also minimizes water waste. tips courtesy of Kathryn Kattalia

Relish recipe of the month Roasted Cabbage Wedge Salad Recipe by Sarah Searle

Blast wedges with high heat and drizzle with vinaigrette for a whole new way to serve cabbage. Serves 4

Ingredients 1 head savoy cabbage 1 to 2 tablespoon olive oil Coarse salt Sherry vinegar dijon mustard

Instructions 1. Preheat oven to 450F. 2. Using a large, sharp knife, quarter cabbage. Depending on the size of your cabbage, these quarters may be good size already. If they seem too large for one plate, cut each into halves so you have 8 wedges. Trim away any very pithy or brown ends of the core, but leave the core intact. The core will hold the wedges together while roasting. 3. Arrange wedges on a baking sheet. Drizzle with olive oil, and then sprinkle liberally with salt.

4. Roast cabbage 30 minutes, flipping wedges after 15 minutes so they brown evenly. (At the end of roasting, the cabbages may have some blackened, crispy outer leaves. If you don’t want this, take them out a few minutes early, but note that the inside of the cabbage may be less tender than if you had left it in longer.) 5. While cabbage is roasting, make vinaigrette: whisk together olive oil, sherry vinegar and dijon. Taste vinaigrette and season with salt and pepper . 6. When cabbage is done, plate the wedges, drizzle with vinaigrette, and grate pecorino romano over the top. Serve immediately, while the cabbage is still hot.

Grandma’s Blessings: The long road from script to screen story and photos by STUART TAYLOR

A

S IS FITTING FOR A ROAD TRIP MOVIE, IT WAS A long road getting “Grandma’s Blessings” from script to screen, but Roy Kirkland and Doug Sebastian prevailed, hosting a world premiere for the film on February 15 at Mathis City Auditorium. The long road started years ago. In the middle of editing of their first film, “And, There You Are,” Kirkland was driving to meet Sebastian. On the way, he passed an old Champion RV with a For Sale sign. After passing it daily for a while, Kirkland started wondering what kind of story could be written around it.

36

ValdostaScene | APRIL 2013

Slowly, it started coming together, a story about a man, Drayton Taylor, who loses his job and his grandmother back-to-back. He leaves his home in Valdosta to travel to Austin, Texas, where he finds his grandmother has left him an antique Champion RV in her will. Broke and jobless, he sets out with new friend Joshua Wright to find his way back home. Originally starting out as a more risque, R-rated comedy, Kirkland decided to go in a different direction. After talking with his sister, Coline Corbitt, who plays the presidential candidate’s wife, and Grandma’s Blessings actor Ben Register, who plays Joshua Wright, Kirkland decided to challenge himself. Above left: The Champion RV presented a few challenges to the film crew throughout the shooting. Above right: For writer Roy Kirkland, right, and director Doug Sebastian, the road to Grandma’s Blessings was long and is still going.

“I knew I could make something provocative, something risque,” said Kirkland, “but it would be more of a challenge to make something family friendly.” A family comedy might seem like an odd choice for Kirkland and Sebastian, but for them, that was the point. “There’s no cursing and no sex scenes,” said Sebastian, the director of Grandma’s Blessings. “The film’s kind of ‘square,’ but the comedy isn’t. We wanted to do comedy without having to go the cursing and nudity route. It’s our own spin on ‘square.’” Along with their award-winning documentary “A Cross Burning in Willacoochee,” the duo’s previous movies were “Battle of the Cursed,” about the longstanding truce between a group of vampires and werewolves breaking down, “Crazed,” where a man has to deal with two dangerous home invaders, and the aforementioned “And, There You Are,” a comedy about one man’s risque search for true love. “Cursed and Crazed were both dark films, with violence and blood,” said Sebastian. “We wanted to get back into the light.” “We had such a fun time making And There You Are, we wanted to go back to something fun,” said Kirkland. On the ride to Georgia, Taylor and Wright make a number of stops and meet a varied cast of characters. They visit a struggling winery, get help from a mechanic, Billy, who yearns for a shot at the country music big-time, and face off against a smalltown sheriff. None of that would have been possible without the help of area communities. Although Taylor and Wright go across half the country, it was all filmed in a 50-mile radius of Valdosta. “Nashville let us shut down roads and film in their downtown,” said Kirkland. “Horsecreek Winery let us shoot at their vineyard. Lowndes County let us shoot at the industrial parks and arranged for sheriff’s cars to appear in some scenes.”

Right, top to bottom: Haley Boykin, pictured here with her mother, Connie Sargeant, is one of a group of actors Sebastian and Kirkland regularly cast in their films; Part of the appeal for West Palm Beach actor Drew Varnick was the oppourtunity to make a clean, fun film; Like true thespians, Henry Tisdale and Beth Walters take their art very seriously.

Grandma’s Blessings Since they were able to shoot everything locally, the budget for “Grandma’s Blessings” went straight back into the local community. Something that, at the redcarpet premiere for the film, Valdosta-Lowndes County Tourism Board member Gerone Anderson mentioned he would like to see more of. “It’s important to support local film,” said Anderson. “Growth is important. The film industry could be part of our city’s growth.” The premiere brought out hundred of Valdostans, who enjoyed a pre-premiere dinner, music by country singer Mitch Rossell, who plays Billy in the film, and mingling with the Mathis Auditorium stans came out to Hundreds of Valdo y made film. support the locall on Feburary 15 to

cast and crew of the film. And just like the audience, the cast hadn’t seen the film before the premiere. “He never lets us see the films until they’re finished,” said Haley Boykin, who plays Lisa, Joshua Wright’s girlfriend. “He wants us to watch it fresh. I’m a little nervous about seeing myself.” “I’m excited to see it this way,” said Cameron LentShiver, who plays Drayton Taylor in the film. “I get to experience it just the same as everyone else in the audience.” Boykin, who was in Kirkland and Sebastian’s third film, “Crazed,” and Lent-Shiver, who played a werewolf in “Battle of the Cursed,” are part of a loose group of actors whom Kirkland and Sebastian regularly feature in their films. Cast regulars Blake Connell and Tyler Mitchell play Bad and Good Conscience, who watch from the sky and comment on the film. After working together on a 38

ValdostaScene | APRIL 2013

number of Sebastian and Kirkland films, the duo has developed a comfortable ad-libbing style. “We’re kind of like the two old guys from the Muppets,” said Connell. “On set, Doug and Roy are pretty loose,” said Mitchell. “They know what they want out of a scene, but they give us flexibility.” “Grandma’s Blessings” adds a couple of actors to the mix. Beth Walters plays Taylor’s best friend, Felicia, while Henry Tisdale plays Presidential candidate Dick Fromley, who Taylor interviews in the film’s opening. “These guys are doing a lot for artists in the southeast,” said Tisdale. “It’s giving them a chance to express their talent. In this area of the country, there’s not a lot of places talent can go.” The film also gives Palm Beach actor Drew Varick – “It isn’t something I would normally do, but I enjoyed the role” – and Miss Georgia United States Lacie Yeager a chance to express their talent. Kirkland and Sebastian aren’t at the end of the road with “Grandma’s Blessings” just yet. “The response from the community has been excellent,” said Kirkland. “I did not expect this type of positive response, people telling me that they laughed so hard.” After the premiere, Kirkland and Sebastian headed back to the editing room to make a new cut of the film, shortening it and replacing scenes that fell flat in the screening. Now, they’re in talks with several theater companies about showing the film, as well as planning a DVD release. Kirkland and Sebastian have no plans to slow down their filmmaking, with releases of “Crazed” and “Battle of the Cursed: The Two Kings” to follow this summer. After that, they’re planning their next film, an as-yet untitled mockumentary about a film team trying to get a zombie movie off the ground. “We’d also like to see a film commission come together in Valdosta, like they have in Austin,” said Sebastian “Valdosta has a lot to offer filmmakers and filmmaking would bring a lot of money into the community.” “We want to do it as a community,” said Kirkland. “A bunch of people gathered together around a table, everyone helping each other out. That’s just the best feeling.”

DINING OUT

Bubba Jax

Crab Shack: The freshest seafood in town! story by BRITTANY D. McCLURE photos by BRANDON POWERS There may not be anywhere in Valdosta where you can kick back, dig your feet in the sand and catch the cool breeze off the ocean, but you can partake in some quality coastal cuisine by heading to Bubba Jax Crab Shack on West Hill Ave. “We serve what you would expect to find on the coast,” said Bubba Jax co-owner Brian Banks. Banks, along with Andy Pickering opened Bubba Jax Crab Shack in Valdosta on June 15, 2012, but it’s origins go back much further. “It all started with the blue crab,” said Pickering. “Before Bubba Jax was ever created I owned my own blue crab boat.”

42

ValdostaScene | APRIL 2013

A blue crabber from Brunswick, Pickering started on the boat and created the first Bubba Jax Seafood Market in Waycross five years ago. “It was created to move what I was catching on the boat,” said Pickering. Building on the success of his first business, Pickering opened up a Bubba Jax Seafood Market in Valdosta two years ago. It was there that he met Banks. “I was at the market in Valdosta for six months before the restaurant,” said Banks. Aside from having experience in the seafood market, Banks also had previously managed a restaurant and bar. He also had knowledge of the local area.

Oysters on the half shell are always a favorite.

“I’ve lived in Valdosta my whole life,” said Banks. “I went to Lowndes High School and then Valdosta Tech.” The two got together and the first Bubba Jax Crab Shack was born. “It just made sense to put one and one together to make two,” said Pickering. The foundation of Bubba Jax is simple: Good groceries. “In the beginning, when you start with good groceries, you can make good groceries,” said Pickering. And boy oh boy are their “groceries” good. Wild Georgia shrimp, hushpuppies, hand-battered onion rings, crab legs, low country boil, shrimp po’ boys and more. Even better, the shrimp is fresh off the dock and comes in twice a week.

The shrimp dinner includes wild Georgia shrimp, two sides and hush puppies.

46

ValdostaScene | APRIL 2013

“Most of our shrimp is caught local in Brunswick,” said Banks. On the weekends, they serve fresh caught fish that can consist of trout from Brunswick or even catfish from Florida. They even serve oysters on the half shell. “There’s no where in Valdosta to eat raw oysters,” said Banks. On Wednesdays, you can even get a dozen raw oysters for just $7.99. While the fish is the freshest around, the prices are still as reasonable as the food is good. “We don’t want to be too uppity,” said Banks. You can get big platters for two that run around $20 to $25 and daily lunch specials from just $7.99. “We can’t be too high but we also strive to put the best on the plate that we can,” said Pickering.

The attire is casual, the music is good, the beer is cold and the only thing missing is some sand for the feet. But, according to Banks, that is coming soon too. “We’re in the process of remodeling,” said Banks. “We’re putting sand up in the front.” While the environment is relaxed, the weekends get busy, a sure sign that Bubba Jax is as good as it claims. Whether you’re looking for some peel and eat shrimp, crab cakes or just a drink and basket of rings, Bubba Jax is the place you want to be. Bubba Jax Crab Shack is located at 1700 West Hill Ave. Their hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday through Saturday. Turner Center celebrates 10 years this month

L

egend claims the old First State Bank & Trust’s downtown headquarters looked more like an art gallery than a bank. The comparison seems reasonable. For years, the bank’s lobby served as the showcase for the annual Spring Into Art exhibits. Of course, the legend became fact 10 years ago when the one-time bank building officially transformed into the Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts. Since opening in April 2003, with that year’s Spring Into Art show, the Turner Center has hosted dozens of art exhibits and performances, led numerous children’s and adult art classes, and served as a meeting place 48

for various organizations’ functions and events. This month, the arts center hosts the 26th Annual Spring Into Art, which is still the region’s largest and most inclusive art exhibit. The center provides exhibit space for every work entered in the show. Judges select the exhibit’s prize winners and the Colson Printing Company chooses about a dozen works for its next year’s calendar. Throughout this year, the center has celebrated this anniversary by marking all of its events with a special 10-year anniversary logo created by Bill Shenton, the Turner Center’s curator. Executive Director Cheryl Oliver says the entire year has been dedicated to a specific fundraising drive to pay off the

center’s remaining $90,000 mortgage debt. The center’s board has asked donors to donate $2,013 for the year 2013 to pay the mortgage, Oliver says. Though a 12-month push, the fundraising drive had already reached 71 percent of its goal at the time of this interview in mid-March. “It’s a hard time to ask for donations,” Oliver says. “We’re not providing food. We’re not providing shelter. But what we do provide is food for the spirit.” By the end of the year, the center will host a gala for the $2,013/2013

donors. This event will also celebrate the past Lowndes/Valdosta Arts Commission board chairpeople since the Turner Center opened in 2003. Though the center has an endowment fund, started with the 2003 opening, paying off the mortgage will open new opportunities for the center in the future. Led by board President Archie Waldron, the center is in the process of strategic planning and is developing a business plan for the coming years, Oliver says. She describes Waldron as “a visionary who sees the long-term picture” for the arts center. Even though many people said the former bank looked like an art gallery, it still required extensive remodeling more than a decade ago to transform it into the Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts. Still, after 10 years, and given the original building is a few decades old, the center is an aging structure requiring diligent maintenance and care, Oliver says. With the mortgage paid, these aging issues can be more readily addressed in the future. The Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts started with this building, featuring several dedicated galleries, retaining the bank vault for storing valuable art, and upper floors for arts classes and rental space for other organizations (the area Red Cross spent several

years on the upper floors), but the center’s mission started several years ago, with the Lowndes/Valdosta Arts Commission. For many years, LVAC kept its offices in a small building near VSU. The Lowndes/Valdosta Arts Center featured a multipurpose room/gallery, a secondary gallery, etc. The old center was a whirlwind hub of creative activity and expression. In the early 2000s, First State Bank began moving its headquarters from downtown to the current location at a corner of Perimeter and Bemiss roads. Former state Sen. Loyce Turner, who had ties with the bank, and the Turner family donated more than a half-million dollars toward LVAC purchasing the downtown building from First State. The addition of other contributions led to the purchase, refurbishing the bank building into an actual series of art galleries, and a foundation for its operation. The center is named for Annette Howell Turner, Sen. Turner’s late wife who was a woman who greatly supported local arts. Her portrait remains prominently displayed in the center. During the 2013 Spring Into Arts gala, Sen. Turner and his family will be honored for their commitment to the center.
