“Like last year, the strength of the team is going to be pitching and defense,” Hogue said. “We return almost the same group and we were the leaders in the MWC in defense last year. I’d take our pitching and defense against anyone. That’s what we do best.” The Utes thrived in low-scoring affairs last season as they went 25-2 when they were able to limit their opponents to three runs or less.
Infield
Sophomore Taylor Austin and junior Katelyn Elliott will serve as the backup for each infield spot and may also be inserted into the Ute lineup as a designated player or pinch hitter. Freshman Marissa Mendenhall will be called upon to play either a corner of the infield or right field and may also appear as the Utes’ designated player.

The real position battle as preseason practice begins will be between senior Hannah Clements and junior Sandi Bowles for the vacant outfield spot.
“[Ramirez] came in ready to be a Division I starter and she’ll get her chances,” Hogue said. “Fundamentally, she’s as sound as anyone out there and that’s why she’s done so well. Defensively, she fields her position better than any pitcher I’ve ever coached.”
“We look forward to everything about our challenging schedule,” Hogue said. “We want to play the best teams and the Pac-12 is arguably the best conference in the country. We want to see how high of a level we can compete. We plan to keep the focus on us and improving as a team, just like we’ve always done.”
Having three capable starting pitchers will provide Hogue with plenty of options in the circle throughout the season.

The Utes begin their 2012 season in Tempe, Ariz., at the Kajikawa Classic, Feb. 10-12, then host their first home game on Mar. 7, a Deseret First Duel tilt against BYU. Utah’s league slate in its inaugural Pac-12 slate features 21 games against six different opponents ranked in the top 25 of the last NFCA Coaches Poll last season. The Utes begin league play by traveling to Seattle to face Washington on Mar. 23-25.
“They both have completely different qualities,” Hogue said. “Both of them will share time until someone emerges as the leader. “[Clements] has the upper hand [over Bowles] on offense. She is more of a power hitter,” Hogue said. “[Bowles] has the upper hand [over Clements] on defense.”
Catchers A trio of newcomers will vie for the opportunity to replace Brooke Olson as Utah’s starter behind the plate. Shay Wallace, a sophomore transfer from Salt Lake Community College, is poised to step into the role. “[Wallace] is tough enough, gutty enough and bossy enough to be our starting catcher,” Hogue said wryly. “Graduating [Olson] was a huge loss for us, but I hired assistant coach Maggie Livreri, who was a catcher, and she’s getting ‘Shay’ ready to fill [Olson’s] shoes.”
Going around the horn starting from left to right, senior Whitney Holm returns for her fourth year as Utah’s starting third baseman. Holm was selected to the 2011 All-MWC squad after hitting a team-high nine home runs last season and has now hit 28 over her career. She needs just four more to tie Niki Hayhurst (32 from 2000-03) for fifth place in school history. “[Holm] will be our everyday third baseman,” Hogue said. “She’ll also be in a key part of our lineup with her power at the plate.”
“[Dickman] is a left-handed hitter who is really starting to hit for power,” Hogue said. “She’s a steady and consistent gap-to-gap hitter day in and day out.”
A schedule that includes 27 games against 12 opponents who qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season awaits Utah in its first Pac-12 season.
Freshman Desaray Akins was Utah’s most improved player during fall practice and will have plenty of opportunities to gain experience this season. She is slated to back up Wallace behind the plate. Classmate Susan Duke will also serve as a backup and may see time as a pinch hitter.
Utilities/Designated Players Entering her senior season, Joni Cook ended the fall season as Utah’s primary option as the designated player. Cook is a career .284 hitter with a .324 on-base percentage and 18 RBI. The Eagle, Idaho native was a 2010 All-MWC selection as a DP as she hit .457 in league play to rank third among MWC batters. She also tied for fifth with four doubles and was eighth with a .472 on-base percentage against conference competition that season. Cook was heating up at the plate during the fall exhibition season. “[Cook] was our hottest hitter this fall and arguably the most consistent,” Hogue said. “I expect her to bat in the three, four, or five spots for us to start the season. She’s already proven to us her ability to hit the ball gap-togap against the top throwers.” Newcomer Kendal Bergman will also have an opportunity to swing a bat this spring, primarily as a pinch hitter.

“It is such a nice feeling to have our entire starting infield back,” Hogue said. “We led the MWC in fielding percentage last season and our infielders are the biggest reason for that. The way our pitching staff sets up hitters, our infielders are the busiest on the field.”
“[Palauni] is our best first baseman and she’ll be in there every day when healthy,” Hogue said. “She’s valuable to our lineup.”
“[Fankhauser] will play every day in the outfield,” Hogue said. “Behind the plate, she has the best pop times on the team. ‘Cheese’ has range, a great arm and is in the top of the batting order because of her power and her speed.”
The undisputed ace of the staff is senior Generra Nielson, who finished second in the MWC with 198 strikeouts during her first season at Utah. Nielson finished the year listed in the top 10 of the MWC’s overall statistics in four other categories. She tied for second place with 21 victories (against 12 losses), was third with 180.1 innings pitched, and sixth in both ERA (3.77) and opponent batting average (.261).

The Utes are fortunate enough to have their entire starting infield return for the 2012 campaign.
In the other corner spot, 2011 All-MWC and NFCA All-West Region Second Team first baseman Tia Palauni returns for her senior season at first base as Utah’s unquestioned vocal leader. Her patience at the plate has been a virtue for the Utes as she set a new school single-season record by drawing 41 walks in 41 games last season. Her 1.0 walk-per-game average was good for fifth in the nation. Palauni has drawn 80 walks throughout her career, which is already tied for fifth in school history. She needs 26 more walks to tie Hayhurst (106 walks from 200003) for the school’s career record.
Fankhauser, a 5-3 sophomore from South Jordan, Utah, will be Utah’s starting center field on opening day, but may also see time at catcher when the need arises. She was named to the All-MWC Team after an impressive freshman campaign in 2011 as she was second on the team with a .339 batting average posted a .435 on-base percentage. She also knocked in 27 runs and registered a .565 slugging percentage.

“Last year, we won all but two of those games when we kept our opponent under four runs, and this year I hope that doesn’t change one bit,” Hogue said. “We lost some key hitters, so we’re excited to see who’s going to step up and get those timely hits for us. We’re built around pitching and defense, so when we get those timely hits it should win us some ballgames.”
“[Sweet] is our starting second baseman. She’s also become our fastest player. She’s going to steal some bases for us this year and do a whole lot more things offensively because her game is improving all of the time.”
Two of the three outfield positions were settled during fall ball as utility player Chalese Fankhauser returns to her starting spot in center field, while freshman Kate Dickman earned a starting nod on either side.

The Utes welcome back two established starters on the mound and have a newcomer entering the fold with plenty of experience against high-caliber competition.

Utah finished third in the Mountain West Conference last season and had a shot at the conference title heading into the final day of the regular season. The Utes led the MWC with a .980 fielding percentage during league play and only committed six errors against MWC foes, while sporting the third-lowest overall ERA (3.76).
“[Hoopiiaina] will play short,” Hogue said. “She has a ton of talent and she’s learning how to take on more responsibilities. She’s adjusted some things that have made her more of a power threat offensively. Speed-wise, she’s in the top five on the team and is great on the bases.

Amy Hogue has been charged with leading the University of Utah softball team into its inaugural season in arguably the best softball league in the nation, the Pac-12 Conference. Entering her fifth season as Utah’s head coach, the sixth coach in program history, Hogue has a 105-110 (.488) record at Utah and sports a 302-194 (.609) overall record in 10 seasons as a collegiate head coach, which includes six seasons at the NJCAA’s Salt Lake Community College. Under Hogue’s guidance, Diana Phillips earned an NFCA First-Team All-Region award in 2008 and Tia Palauni was named to the second team in 2011, while and nine different Utes have been name to all-conference teams.
Her playing career at Utah was equally as impressive. As a player, she helped the Utes win two conference titles, two conference tournaments and two regional titles in making two Women’s College World Series appearances. She captained the 1994 squad that tallied a school-record 51 wins.
A former USA Softball Men’s National Team pitcher, played for the national team 2004 - 2009. 2007 he helped the national team finish second at the ISF Men’s World Cup in Prague, posting a 2-0 record from the circle with 18 strikeouts. He was named Best Pitcher at the NAFA World Series in 2006. A four-time ASA AllAmerican, Thomson helped the Salt Lake Miners finish second at the ASA Men’s 23-under National Championship twice.
In addition to the team’s success, Hogue was Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year, first team all-region and second team All-America in 1994. She was a three-time All-WAC player and was the team MVP in 1994.
Thomson began his coaching career at his alma mater, Copper Hills High School, in 1996, and served as an assistant at Southern Utah University in 1998. Before joining the Utes coaching staff, Thomson has taught pitching lessons in the Salt Lake Community and surrounding areas since 2002.
Hogue’s name appears throughout the record book at Utah. In Utah’s career record book, she still ranks third in at bats (703) and stolen bases (72), fourth in hits (239), and fifth in both hitting (.340) and runs (125).
Thomson is married to the former Amanda Tuft and has four children: Mikaela (12), Chase (9), Cayden (6) and Quinley, who was born Dec. 31, 2011.
Her 101 hits in a season was one of the longest-standing marks in the NCAA, and she still holds the NCAA record for at bats in a game (14). The Utah standout briefly played professional softball. After college, she toured with the WPF Storm and was later drafted and signed to play with Durham Dragons.
Maggie Livreri will join the University of Utah softball coaching staff for the 2012 season. Livreri will work with Utah’s outfielders, catchers and hitters. Livreri was previously an assistant coach at UNLV from 2009-11 after spending the 2007 and `08 campaigns as a volunteer assistant coach. The Rebels went 153-126 (.548) with Livreri on the bench, including an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2009. The Las Vegas native started her collegiate playing career at Colorado State University-Pueblo before transferring to UNLV for the 2005 and ‘06 seasons. Despite only playing her junior and senior seasons with the Rebels, Livreri made a significant impact on the program. She finished ninth in the school record books in career RBI (75) and eighth in career walks (60). In UNLV’s single-season record book, Livreri is fourth in walks with 31 in 2006, eighth in doubles with 12 in 2006, eighth in RBI with 38 in 2006 and tied for 10th in most games played with 63 in 2005. Livreri was selected to the Mountain West Conference’s AllTournament and All-Conference Teams in 2005. She played one season in the Italian Professional League for Nuoro after completing her intercollegiate playing career. Livreri earned a bachelor’s degree from UNLV in University Studies in 2006 and obtained her Master’s in Higher Education Leadership in 2008.

Hogue graduated from Utah in 1994 with a sociology degree and earned a Masters from Utah in social work in 1996. The Sandy, Utah, native is married to Sean Hogue and has three children, Brennan (11), Kai (9) and Tessa (6).

Hogue built and mentored Salt Lake Community College’s softball team from 1999-2004, instantly creating a successful program. She went 197-82 (.706) in her time with the Bruins. The pinnacle of her tenure with the Bruins came in 2004. SLCC was the regional champion that season and placed sixth at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament.
Hogue also coached an accelerated travel team, called The Sting. She guided her club squad to a .725 winning percentage. In her last two seasons, The Sting racked up 137 wins.
Cody Thomson enters his third season as a full-time assistant on the Ute coaching staff. Thomson served as a volunteer assistant coach for Utah since 2004, working primarily with the Ute pitchers.
In 2000, the Bruins’ inaugural campaign, they won the Scenic West Athletic Conference title and repeated as champions again in 2003. At SLCC, Hogue coached 36 all-region players (22 first-teamers, 14 second-team nods), and coached nine All-America standouts. In addition to the players’ success, Hogue was named the SWAC Coach of the Year for her efforts in 2003. Hogue played for the Utes from 1991-94 and earned second team All-America honors as a senior. In garnering All-America accolades, she hit .455, had 101 hits, 222 at bats and 55 runs scored. All of those numbers still stand as the school’s top marks for a single season. Hogue also holds season records for triples (7) and runs scored (55). She led both the 1991 and 1994 squads to the College World Series.
Hogue got her start in coaching as Utah’s graduate assistant coach from 1994-95. From there she went to Alta High School as an assistant coach from 1994-96.

Paskins is entering his second season at the University of Utah as a volunteer assistant coach. He joins the Ute coaching staff as a volunteer assistant after serving as an assistant coach at Alta High School from 2006 to 2009.
Cody Lockling is in his first year as a graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach at the University of Utah. He works with Utah’s Olympic sport programs to design sport-specific training to facilitate athlete development.
Paskins enjoyed a 24-year playing career on the fastpitch circuit that included 14 years in Men’s Majors World Fastpitch Tournaments, 12 years in Men’s Majors Fastpitch Nationals and 11 years with Page Brake Fastpitch.

Paskins was a member of the National All-Tournament Team in 2009 and selected to the All-World Team at NAFA Masters in 2006 and 2008. He was named the Polar Bear Tournament Most Valuable Player in 1989 and 1991 before earning MVP honors at the 2000 Alpine Tournament. Paskins won league batting titles in 1988, ‘89 and ‘95.
He earned a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Utah last May and was named the University of Utah’s Outstanding Student in Exercise Science in 2011 and has been on the Dean’s List

The Utes won the inaugural Mountain West Conference Tournament in 2000 and went on to capture it again in 2002, 2004 and 2006 before the tournament was discontinued following the 2006 season. Utah posted an 15-5 record in MWC postseason play. AIAW Tournament The Utes posted an all-time record of 11-9 in the AIAW Tournament. In 1976, Utah advanced the AIAW College World Series. When completed, the new facility will provide an excellent environment for studentathletes, coaches and fans. Night games will become a reality, as the stadium will be illuminated by six banks of permanent lights. It will feature an indoor batting area for the Utes, as well as outdoor batting and pitching cages for both teams. Dugouts will be equipped with restrooms and an athletic training room will also be located on the premises.

The dimensions of the playing field will be 235’ to center field and 225’ down the right and left field line, with a grass berm behind the outfield fence. The capacity at Ute Field will be 900, including armchair seats covered by a canopy, as well as bleacher seating. Temporary bleacher seating in left field will enable Utah to bid to host NCAA Tournaments.

Athlete Development Academic Services
The Utah softball team has a variety of resources available to it to care for both the player’s physical and mental well-being. The Utes train in the new Alex Smith Strength and Conditioning Facility at the Dee Glen Smith Athletics Center. Smith, a Utah alum and NFL quarterback, donated $500,000 as the lead gift for the renovation and expansion of the existing strength and conditioning facility at his alma mater.
As an academic institution, the University of Utah enjoys a richly deserved reputation for excellence in education. The Utah athletics department works to ensure that each of its student-athletes takes advantage of the academic opportunities offered. With three full-time athletic academic advisors, the U. provides specialized academic counseling for its student-athletes.
To care for the athlete’s injuries, the Utah athletics program maintains a partnership with a veteran sports medicine team supervised by Dr. Bob Burks, director of the University of Utah Sports Medicine Center at Red Butte Clinic. The sports medicine staff is headed by director Trevor Jameson and associate trainer Deb Willardson. The softball team works with graduate assistant Meagan Maguire on a daily basis.
The U. employs four full-time academic advisers for its student-athletes. The department is under the direction of Director of Athletic-Academic Services Lucas Moosman. Moosman oversees the academic counseling for the softball team. Also on the staff are Rob Rainey, Matt Leituala and Beth Brennan.

The Ute academic team monitors the studies of each student-athlete to ensure he or she is making progress toward a degree. The academic advisors also dispense their knowledge of departmental and University requirements, and assist with course registration and the exploration and selection of majors.
Grants One of the leading universities in the nation in federal research grants, the U. receives more than $300 million annually in grants and contracts.
Entrepreneurs The University of Utah is tied for first in the nation with MIT in the most recent rankings of university startup companies based on scholarly research The U. spun off 20 companies for fiscal year 2008. Academic All-Americans Utah has produced 57 Academic All-Americans, including back-to-back “Academic All-Americans of the Year,” gymnast Theresa Kulikowski in 2003 and quarterback Alex Smith in 2004. Wired In In 2008, the U. ranked as the third “Most Wired School” in the nation. Utah’s varsity studentathletes have access to their own computer lab in the Burbidge Athletics Academic Center and laptop computers are available for team travel.

Research The University of Utah ranks in the top 35 public research universities in the nation, with particular distinction in medicine, genetics and engineering. University of Utah geneticist Mario R. Capecchi received the 2007 Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine for his work on gene targeting and former Utah biochemist Venkatraman Ramakrishnan won the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Research Park, located on 320 acres adjacent to the campus, is the site of the Huntsman Cancer Institute, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Eccles Institute of Human Genetics, the Moran Eye Center and the Brain Center.

The current elite training facility has 16 full racks with Olympic platforms, a large dumbbell training area complete with 12 0-90 degree incline walk-up benches, and a large cardiovascular area complete with treadmills, cross trainers, stair steppers and spin bikes.
The strength and conditioning program concentrates on strength training, speed development, flexibility, mental toughness, conditioning, injury prevention and motivation. Under the direction of Doug Elisaia, the director of strength and conditioning, the softball program works with Graduate Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach Cody Lockling.

In July of 2011, the University of Utah moves into the Pac-12 Conference. Utah formally accepted an invitation to join the conference as its 12th member on June 17, 2010, a week after Colorado made its announcement. In doing so, Utah and Colorado became the conference’s newest members since 1978.
